More and more people these days are watching more Online TV and less TV on the television set. Is it a natural progression or maybe the old technology that is a standard tv set is losing the battle of the eyeballs.

A newly released report from Conference Board which was revealed on Tuesday shows that around a quarter of all homes in the US are getting their tv fix online. Although you may say its only a quarter, it is also up around 5% on last years figure of 20%.

Reality shows and surprisingly sports cam next with 20% and 18% respectively.

But a rather naughty 10% watch at the office. Whilst they should be working i wonder?

News and sitcoms are the most popular show to watch, which ties in with our post of YouTube to rent movies online. Their viewers are reluctant to watch the currently free full length movies as viewers are still not comfortable watching over 90 minutes of conntent in one sitting (Numb bum anyone?).

A recent PVR study caught my eye and got me thinking. Actual Customer Behaviour, in conjunction wit

A recent PVR study caught my eye and got me thinking. Actual Customer Behaviour, in conjunction with London Business School, conducted an 18 months study in a number of homes with personal video recorders, video-on-demand and online video services. The study was conducted for a consortium including Ofcom, the BBC, Channel 4, BT Vision and Microsoft, among others. What particularly interested me was the observation that the availability of an archive of programmes in the personal video recorder reduced the appetite for true video-on-demand. I believe Virgin Media claim that the availability of iPlayer shifted their customers’ viewing habits to circa 40% catch-up. I also thought about my family’s viewing behaviour – check broadcast to see if anything is worth watching, if not check the PVR for unwatched recorded programmes, if not check Sky Anytime for catch-up content, if not check our DVD/Blue-ray collection for anything appealing and if not look at Sky box office for pay-as-you-go VoD. We seldom make it to the box office option – maybe once every other month – and if we do then we only pay for an HD version. If we also had the ability to watch free OTT content on our TV then that would make a paid event even rarer. So a number of things to contemplate:

1) Is the availability of catch-up TV (iPlayer, Hulu, TV.com) enough to satisfy the vast majority of viewer’s TV needs and…

2) If so, will future IPTV business models primarily be license fee/advertising/sponsorship/product placement driven and…

3) Does this put the balance of IPTV content power firmly in the hands of these super-aggregators of quality, catch-up TV?

I think the answer to question 1) is almost certainly yes. Many, many households are happy with just a broadcast service and adding a catch-up facility alongside would probably deliver 80% of the value-add from a broadband-to-the-TV connection. The interesting aspect is whether the remaining 20% of value – delivered through VoD or games or applets – warrants the additional complexity of delivery. A simple Canvas-style box offering DVB/T broadcast channels and catch-up TV would undoubtedly hit the spot for 8 out of 10 viewers so what value investing in the rest? Present all that catch-up as a backward and forward EPG then the service becomes easy to find and use. Add an option to accelerate forward content (pay a little extra to see Top Gear earlier than the transmission) and you have a real winner. And yes I know we all get very excited about the bleeding edge opportunities like TV widgets and T-commerce but my blog audience is definitely not representative of Joe Public and I do wonder if the mass-market will ever give a damn.

An affirmative to Question 2) would require IPTV service providers to acquire new skills and technologies to survive in such a brave new world. In my previous blog entries, I have been banging on about the need to understand a consumer’s consumption habits so that they can be effectively ‘retailed’ to. Unless commercial messages are contextual, current and compelling then they will not break-through and therefore not command the revenues required to make a service providers’ business model work. I don’t dismiss the possibility of additional movie rental purchases or e-commerce revenues or applet sales but these may well be small in comparison. In this new world targeting, data mining, meta-tagging and profiling technologies become the super stars. This could also be a great opportunity for outsourcing – agencies that specialise in doing the difficult matching and thrive on scale. Think DoubleClick for the TV.

Probably most interesting is the answer to question 3). Traditionally the power has rested with the linear broadcast provider for subscription TV services and with the movie studios for VoD movies. The former are now striving for, and in some cases achieving, direct relationships with consumers by in effect competing with their existing channels whilst the latter have been working hard to avoid disrupting the status quo by strictly maintaining release windows. In a catch-up dominated IPTV world, both models will have to change.

It could be that broadcasters combine linear and catch-up packages, brand them completely and pay service providers purely to distribute the content. The service provider falls back to the role of dumb carrier and monetises the network. The broadcaster fronts customer acquisition activity by leveraging their media reach and the service providers offer installation help, guaranteed quality or discounted triple-play bundles. Maybe not an ideal scenario for the service provider but it does allow them to ‘revert to type’ and leverage core skills. The broadcaster gets to exploit its ‘content is king’ position but will always have an uneasy alliance with the distributor. And both need to decide how the set-top box is funded. Is it a universal product which can subscribe to multiple broadcaster services or a tethered offering? Here lies the real opportunity of a Freeview/Canvas-like product, the consumer buys the box and as long as the OTT content is only ‘gatekeeped’ by the consumer then many different content providers could compete for that customer’s loyalty. Sounds like the PC to me – one platform, many services.

The studios have another challenge – ensuring that their VoD delivered movies are promoted. In my BT Vision days, we looked upon blockbuster movies as a marketing expense as the minimum guarantees and revenue shares demanded by the studios make them a loss leader. Now in a world where catch-up is the compelling proposition then the movies need an edge and that for me is achieved by shrinking the release windows. This would maximise the promotion ‘halo’ effect from a film launch. Today if I see a movie on VoD, I can hardly remember its theatrical release unless it is a Harry Potter title or similar. I also believe that broadcasters may well choose to mash-up with film aggregators, like Netflix or Lovefilm, and not bother to contract the movie rights direct – unless that broadcaster owns a studio of course.

So are we entering a ‘catch-up’ centric IPTV world and moving away from the traditional VoD centric model? I would argue so but I know that you all have your own views…

Catch-up TV : premier bilan et nouveaux enjeux

Dan Phil is your classic ABC silent warrior. You can’t make change in the ABC if you go in there with your hands on your holster looking for cowbows: best to make changes quietly and then let the respect roll in and he’s certainly done that since he spoke at the inaugural Portable Symposium in 2006.

Last year they launched a podcast service for a few of their properties and had positive feedback from both viewers and also the executive team there.

A large part of the ABC rethink is about user involvement. He’s using the term “Me TV” to broadly define the changes that are going on in the realm of digital and UGC. He references the Gruen Transfer, a show that profiles interesting advertising campaigns in Australia, and its provision of a mash-up tool for users to create their own advertisements. They’ve had over 2 million page impressions and 10,000 advertisements created for the platform.

Good Game is a television show that premiered on ABC2 last year. It’s a show about gaming and has a large following so they set up an initiative where the audience could create and submit a project for a game through their online platform. Using a Threadless.com style model of community engagement. The final game that’s being developed is called “Office Wars”.

The third area, which I think is the most interesting, is iView, which offers six channels of content, mainly around “catch-up” content. It provides full screen, high definition content and I think it’s streamed through Vividas. Users can also set up their own playlists and control their own “channel” based on what they want (it also includes digital book-marking, send-a-friend functionality and a few others). Catch-up television is one of those things you see and think “this is so obvious” however it’s great that it’s here and no other providers in Australia are doing it yet.

The BBC has formed a partnership with Nintendo UK to make its BBC iPlayer “catch-up TV”

The BBC has formed a partnership with Nintendo UK to make its BBC
iPlayer “catch-up TV” service available via the Nintendo Wii gaming
console (note: last month, the Corporation also made the iPlayer
available via the Apple iPhone). The partnership was announced by
Erik Huggers, the BBC’s group controller for future media and
technology, in a keynote speech at the MIPTV-Milia conference in
Cannes earlier this month. “Working with Nintendo marks another
exciting milestone for BBC iPlayer,” he said. “It underlines our
commitment to reaching new audiences by making BBC iPlayer

available on as many platforms as possible. The BBC’s catch-up TV
service can now be accessed on an increasing number of different
platforms–from the Web and portable devices to gaming consoles. It
will shortly be available on TV.”

Once the Wii iPlayer service went live, a message was sent to all Wii
consoles in the UK that were connected to the Internet, to notify them
of the service’s availability. Wii owners can access the iPlayer via the
Internet Channel on the Wii main menu (note: new users may be
required to download the Wii Internet Channel): once it is installed,
they click through to bbc.co.uk/iplayer to search for programs they
want to watch. According to the BBC, the current version of the Wii
iPlayer service is a “beta phase” and improved versions of the service
are expected to be rolled out later this year. The Corporation claims
that, since it launched last Christmas, over 42 million programs have
been accessed on the iPlayer.

Earlier this month, the BBC announced that the iPlayer enjoyed
significant growth in the first three months since its official launch on
Christmas Day 2007. According to the Corporation, requests for
downloads and streams of its programs on the iPlayer totaled 17.2
million in March, compared to 14 million in February and 11.2 million
in January–representing month-on-month growth of 25%, and
contributing to a total of over 42 million programs accessed on the
platform since Christmas. In addition, the BBC says, average weekly
users of the iPlayer totaled 1.1 million in March, compared to 750,000
in January; and the average daily number of requests to download or
stream programs via the platform totaled over 550,000, compared to an
average of 360,000 in January. (Note: the BBC qualified its claims with
the following rider: “The BBC’s iPlayer measurement system uses a
sample of users and there are variances with the other page traffic
measurement systems. This data is not yet audited. The BBC is
working towards meeting industry standards for video and audio
streaming and downloading. The BBC is constantly working on its
measurement systems and reserves the right to augment or change its
methodology as the platform develops.”)

According to the BBC, the two most-streamed programs on the iPlayer
in its first three months were the first episode of the current series of
the reality show, “The Apprentice,” and “Louis Theroux: Behind Bars,”
a show in which the eponymous documentary-maker investigated the
US penal system. Other titles appearing in the BBC’s list of top 20 most
iPlayer-streamed shows include “Gavin and Stacey,” BBC One’s
coverage of a rugby game between England and France, “Ashes to
Ashes,” “EastEnders,” and “Torchwood.” “BBC iPlayer continues to
show significant growth and we are delighted that audiences are
responding to it so positively,” Ashley Highfield, the BBC’s
then-director of future media and technology, said in a prepared
statement. “Its initial performance proves the case not only for BBC
iPlayer, but for all video-on-demand services over the Internet, and
benefits both our audiences and the industry as a whole. We continue to
work closely with the internet service providers with a view to driving
the next generation of broadband Internet access.” Added Jana Bennett,
the BBC’s director of vision: “The depth and range of the BBC’s
programming is genuinely prospering in an on-demand world. The
series opener of ‘The Apprentice’ was the first program to break
through 100,000 requests-to-view in a single day, and then added
200,000 further requests-to-view over the week it was available.
Audiences are picking up on the big drama, factual and entertainment
highlights of the season after the linear broadcast, as well as embracing
the best of BBC Three. Within the last few days, the season premiere of
the new series of ‘Doctor Who’ generated over a 150,000 requests in a
single day, which bodes well for the future.” Among other things, the
popularity of the iPlayer has resulted in an increasing volume of
complaints from UK broadband ISP’s.
