Nell’anno in cui Gomorra viene escluso dalla competizione e un film di medio livello (The Millionaire) vince 8 Oscar, l’Academy Awards ha ricoperto di nominations Il curioso caso di Benjamin Button. Anche se, delle 13 potenziali statuette, solo 3 si sono trasformate in Oscar luccicanti (scenografia, trucco, effetti speciali), il parterre di premi e candidature in ogni caso non è di quelli che osano. Il film di Fincher è molto liberamente tratto dall’omonimo racconto del divino F. S. Fitzgerald e adattato per lo schermo dalla sapiente penna di Eric Roth, sceneggiatore da Oscar per Forrest Gump. Un risultato non bissato a questo giro, con la storia di Benjamin Button, bambino nato vecchio e morto in fasce. Un curioso caso che con quello dell’instancabile Forrest ha in comune molte cose. È un’altra storia di outsider ed è un’altra storia che avrebbe la pretesa di percorrere, attraverso le vicende di un bizzarro personaggio, il XX secolo americano. Il deforme e mostruoso Benjamin è nato infatti la sera della fine della prima guerra mondiale, quando viene abbandonato dal ricchissimo padre dopo che la madre perde la vita dandolo alla luce. E il film si conclude, nel letto di morte della donna da sempre e per sempre amata (altra analogia con Forrest Gump), nel giorno in cui l’uragano Katrina si abbatterà su New Orleans.

La domanda alla base del film pare essere: come si vive andando letteralmente contro il tempo? Conducendo una vita in cui anziché all’asilo si è cresciuti in un ospizio, e anziché veder diventare grandi i bambini si sono visti morire gli anziani? Che accadrebbe, insomma, a vivere al contrario al resto del mondo? Nel prologo del film, del resto, è contenuta proprio la parabola centrale del racconto, con la vicenda dell’orologiaio che costruisce un cronografo che va indietro anziché avanti. Il curioso caso di Benjamin Button però non assomiglia per niente all’ultimo Coppola ma piuttosto a un film della Disney e la piattezza della vicenda è quasi avvilente. Nulla va diversamente da come dovrebbe andare. La lacrimuccia è cronometrata a puntino, la storia d’amore è già scritta e l’insopportabile commento musicale interviene nel secondo esatto previsto dalle regole auree del senso comune. Non si capisce in fondo il senso della vicenda. E il suo significato sembrerebbe essere: tutto è relativo, la vita è cambiamento, ciò che resta sono i sentimenti e i legami. Fine della storia. E due ore e tre quarti sono lunghe.

Scenografie sontuose da cartone animato – più che burtoniane – accompagnano un lavoro sorprendente per un regista come David Fincher che, al suo penultimo film, aveva infilato un’opera complessa come Zodiac. Mentre qui ci sono cose che andrebbero letteralmente tagliate: le parti della seconda guerra mondiale sono inutili, così come l’accenno alla tragedia di New Orleans del 2005. Degni di interesse gli effetti speciali della premiata ditta Barba-Preeg-Dalton-Barron, realizzati in motion capture, una tecnica di nuova generazione usata anche nella trilogia de Il signore degli Anelli. L’essere che vedrete sullo schermo, dall’inizio alla fine, è Brad Pitt, anche quando è alto un metro. Sulla faccia dell’attore sono stati posti dei sensori che ne catturano i movimenti del volto e la struttura ossea. Questi speciali marcatori riproducono un’immagine virtuale al computer, che viene innestata sul corpo di un altro attore (nelle scene iniziali, un bambino). Anche il ringiovanimento di Pitt alla fine del film (quando ha circa 20 anni) è frutto non di trucco ma di effetti digitali. Per il resto, il marito di Angelina Jolie è come al suo solito espressivo come una rapa. Gli andrebbe raccomandata una dose massiccia di fratelli Coen, con i quali ha dato la performance più strepitosa della sua carriera. Penalizzata dal piattume generale anche la brava e bellissima Cate Blanchett.

Finally after almost 2 weeks of letting this movie pass me by, I convinced myself last Saturday night to see it.  After making reservations for the 6:20pm showing,  I went out and met my friends for dinner and totally forgetting about the time, thought that the movie will start at 6:40pm!  After we got our table and placed our order, it was 6:05pm….I excused myself to get our reserved tickets and was so shocked to see it will start in 15 minutes!  I quickly ran back to our dinner table…where’s the food?  Let’s call the waiter and tell them to serve it ASAP!  We ate so fast it was crazy!!! Of course we still didn’t make it on time…we probably missed…15mins of the movie.  Good thing it was a 3 hour movie!  It’s an ‘almost’ great movie especially if you have all night and weekend the next day to relax.  Good pacing, I didn’t feel the time passing, the acting was just so-so, thus I won’t be surprise if Brad Pitt don’t take home the Oscar…the storyline didn’t really require heavy drama anyway.  It’s a light-hearted film with a twist…and I suppose a really nice and peaceful ending.

The entire score from The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, composed by Alexander Desplat (Golden Compass, The Queen) is now available online at the Warner Bros. site. I looked over the tracklisting and couldn’t believe my eyes. Maybe they just forgot to list them, I thought. Going over a list of every 2008 music release RBM can officially confirm that this is the first album of the year to not feature Lil Wayne, Ne-Yo, or Akon. I don’t know how I feel about this. Not good, I think.

Long-awaited fourth adventure collapses under its own wait. 

After nineteen years, could Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull possibly live up to expectations? And what kind of movie would in fact please everyone? Well, you’d think George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford et al. could’ve done better than this. 

Unevenly paced, slow to find its rhythms and too impressed with itself by half, the fourth installment of the beloved retro-series shows the mish-mash of the endless script versions, revisions and rewrites that dragged its development out for years without ever gelling into a coherent whole. The plot, such as it is, involves Jones’ attempts to find and return a crystal skull – a Macguffin if ever there was one – to its rightful place in a long-secreted South American temple. He gets help from Brando-esque teen rebel Mutt Williams (Shia LaBeouf), his ex-love Marian Ravenwood (Karen Allen), and a former colleague (John Hurt) turned holy fool by the skull’s mysterious properties. They’re pursued – relentlessly, incredulously – by Soviet agent Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett), a one-dimensional Russian baddie complete with jodhpurs and fencing rapier. There’s family drama, and lost love, and some jokes about growing old gracefully. But they’re murmurs in the whirlwind of the action.

Except now the whirlwind feels winded. Lucas and Spielberg, to paraphrase P.T. Barnum, never went broke underestimating the intelligence of their audience, but this time the film’s gaps in plotting and common sense are too wide to ignore. Problems of logic and reason are left untended, until what’s supposed to be escapism becomes instead distracting. In the case of a less-celebrated director, such gaps would get blamed on lack of skill. Here, they hint of complacency – worse, of arrogance. Adding self-indulgence to injury, the directors endlessly rehash their favorite visual motifs. 1950s nostalgia? It’s there, first thing. Cute animals that behave like humans? In abundance, no less than twice. Mindless, stupid gore? Better believe it. Overlong set pieces? Of course. The many obvious soundstages look Disney-theme-park fake, as well, as if shot on a studio backlot. While that’s partly homage to the serials of yesteryear, it’s also glaringly artificial.

As for the performances, the actors make the most of the few scenes they have that don’t involve punching, jumping, ducking, or lunging. Ford and LaBeouf have a comfortable rapport, but their instant familiarity telegraphs a mid-film revelation that will surprise no one with intelligence greater than the film’s numerous CGI prairie dogs. Blanchett has been better, and Allen isn’t given much to do except drive whatever commandeered vehicle lays around, moon over Ford, and serve as an example of aging gracefully. LaBeouf isn’t terrible in a part that’s obviously meant to satisfy Lucas’ seeming compulsion to introduce minors into deadly situations and an overweening readiness to spin off a new franchise.

And Ford. At 65, the actor looks worn down to his last but still game for a final adventure. Unfortunately, the effortless charm that endeared Han Solo and Indy to a generation is at a low flame here, only coming to life in occasional scenes where he manages to imbue a little weariness into the shrillness around him. Even just an extra scene or two more might’ve helped the film towards becoming a fully-realized piece – but there’s special effects and fights and a field of killer ants and raging waterfalls and an army of angry monkeys (honestly) that won’t wait for such luxuries. The film aims to amaze, not entertain.

Twenty four hours after its debut, a backlash is already brewing. If the public rejects this last installment as more Temple of Doom than Last Crusade, who’s responsible? American film audiences are a fickle lot, and modern genre devotees especially delight in second-guessing film creators about how a follow-up can – and more importantly should – be handled. And of course the results are often disappointing and even dispiriting. But we as ticket buyers expect more from the best filmmakers of their generation, especially after waiting through years of rumors and hints about one last ride with the hero of many a childhood. We expect more, and for decades of loyalty we as fans actually sort of deserve it.

Alguns elementos da tragédia de Otelo aparecem numa versão lésbico-feminista em “Notas sobre um escândalo” (EUA, 2006). Assim como na história de William Shakespeare, o tema é a manipulação, a hipocrisia e – claro – o ciúme. Mas ao invés de Iago, o “manipulador” agora é Barbara Covett (Judi Dench). Ela é uma professora solitária que conhece as motivações humanas e as usa a seu favor. É “só dizer as palavras”, afirma – e as engrenagens sociais começam a funcionar. O filme teve quatro indicações ao Óscar, não ganhou nenhuma, mas foi aclamado pela crítica.

Amarga com sua vida, Bárbara guarda seus pensamentos para si, o que lhe permite cultivar uma imagem austera e fria na escola onde ensina, em Londres. Ela se torna amiga de Sheba Hart (Cate Blanchet), uma professora iniciante. Sheba espera que a carreira de professora possa acabar com a insatisfação que sente em relação a sua vida. Casada e mãe de um filho, ela acredita no potencial da educação para mudar a sociedade. Já Bárbara, acha que “ensinar é controlar uma multidão”. Apesar das diferenças elas logo se tornam amigas íntimas.

Mas Bárbara alimenta uma incomum obsessão pela amiga mais jovem. Isto começa a ficar claro quando Sheila se envolve com um aluno da escola. Bárbara descobre e resolve esconder o fato da direção da escola. Mas com a condição de que Sheila não se encontre mais com o estudante. Na prática, ela passa ter um segredo que lhe dá poder sobre a amiga. Com isso, passa a exigir que seus caprichos sejam satisfeitos, sob a ameaça de revelar o segredo. Agora Sheila está à mercê de uma relação obsessiva, embora demore a percebê-la, tamanha a habilidade manipuladora de Bárbara.

Cate Blanchet e Judi Dench foram indicadas ao Oscar por suas atuações. Ambas trabalham na desconstrução de seus personagens – especialmente Blanchet. No começo as duas professoras são o que a sociedade espera delas. Mas pouco a pouco vão mostrando uma autenticidade interior sufocada pelos papéis sociais que têm de cumprir. Cate Blanchet atua num crescendo que lembra o de Jennifer Connelly em “Água Negra” (2005). Já a interpretação de Dench é prejudicada pelo voice-over (voz interior do personagem). Muito da personagem é exposto já nos primeiros minutos do filme, o que reduz o impacto das revelações posteriores.

“Notas sobre um escândalo” traz algumas cenas fortes, como as de Blanchet com o adolescente interpretado por Andrew Simpson. Os diálogos, com qualidade literária, acentuam as diferenças entre o que é aceito pela sociedade e o comportamento real das personagens. Mas uma coisa parece fora de sintonia: o formato. Os planos longos e a fotografia esbranquiçada dão um aspecto clássico ao filme, mas a trilha sonora evoca o clima de um thriller de suspense. Além disso, o filme aborda um tema forte com uma embalagem clean. A hipocrisia é mostrada em uma linguagem que serve à estética chique. Na temática o diretor Richard Eyre não hesitou em atingir os valores morais da sociedade. Mas na linguagem rendeu-se ao bom-gosto conservador.

Wes Anderson has an upcoming animated movie based on the Roald Dahl story, Fantastic Mr. Fox. Stars such as George Clooney, Cate Blanchett, Anjelica Houston, and Jason Schwartzman (once again.) are attached to the movie. It’s set to realese some time in late 2009.

So far, it has been said that voice recording has begun to commence out in the field. Seriously. Voice parts are being recorded in forests, attics, and even underground.

I don’t know if the general public is as much of a fan of Wes Anderson as I am. But I have high hopes for a stop motion animated movie with his name attached. I just hope it doesn’t turn into another Tim Burton animated crap fast like Corpse Bride and Nightmare Before Christmas. He makes such horrible movies.
