On Sunday, July 8th, I received a call from a member of the group who volunteers at an animal shelter in Port Jervis, NY. She was beside herself after a nearly fruitless weekend adoption event for the cats at the facility at which she volunteers. She had made me aware that there were some cats in need earlier that weekend, but until that afternoon, I had not known just how urgent the situation was. I was told that there was a whole room filled with cats, and an evil man there trying to ‘clear it out’. I was told that if the cats were not placed, they would be killed. Not wanting to let that happened, I sprang into action. I spent the rest of the day making calls, sending e-mails, and soliciting donations to try to help. In retrospect, I wish that I had made a commitment to even one cat upfront, as it could have saved them. (:-() I was too busy trying to get EVERYone out, and ultimately failed. While we might have been able to get one (or even two) cats out and into foster ‘under the radar’, that day, I wasn’t able to work that out in the short amount of time. And I did not realize just how bad things were.

I, then, tried to commit to 3 fosters…I said that I would take them in, and asked that someone make a note of that to assure that they were safe. However, the evil proprietor of that horrible place, apparently refuses to work with fosters or rescues, and seems to just want to kill cats. I think that he is in need of a serious psychological evaluation, and I intend on taking legal action against him as the way that he runs things can not stand! I am trying to look into legal avenues/someone who can launch an official investigation. Something needs to be done!

There are SO many cats out there, and they can be SO hard to place, because people already have cats, or won’t give them the time of day…It’s really heart-breaking. And, as long as people continue to be irresponsible about “fixing” their pets, the terrible situation will persist. However, I am determined to both make people more responsible in that regard, and stop the heinous practices of “kill shelters”!!!!!

That shelter refused to work with fosters (I could have gotten 3-7 cats out, as I had been networking all day), and apparently, will not deal with rescues, either. People will not just pour in off the streets opening their wallets eager to adopt. Sure, once-in-a-while, people will come in to adopt a cat or dog–and, that is great! But, facilities need to be willing to work with fosters and rescues–Getting animals out and keeping them safe should be their ultimate goal!!!

Not only is that facility horribly irresponsible and inhumane in their dealings with the animals, but they are, also incredibly irresponsible and “cheap” regarding tests. Facilities should test cats for FELV and FIV upon intake, or at the very least before they leave…However, this is apparently not a regular practice for all. That is another issue that needs to be addressed.

Sadly, I failed in my efforts to save Snuffy, Charlie, and other beautiful cats. ;-( I was informed later in the week that those cats (cats who I had been willing to foster) had been killed. And, I will, always be haunted by that.

There are still cats (and dogs) at that facility (and MANY others!) who need help–And, that’s where I hope to appeal to you….

What can you do to help the cats (and dogs) in need, there?…

If you can adopt one or more companion animals, please, go there, and do so. As much as I hate for money to be put into such places, these animals need to get out–And, if formal adoption is the only way, then, that’s what needs to be done.

http://www.petfinder.com/pet-search?N=&No=0&Ns=shelter_name%7C%7Canimal_type%7C%7Cpet_breed_1%7C%7Cpet_breed_2%7C%7Cidentifier&Ntk=animal_type%7Cshelter_id%7Crecord_type%7Cstatus&Ntt=Cat%7CNY21%7Cpet%7CA&distance=0&location=Port+Jervis%2C+NY

You’re sure to find at least one kitty there who melts your heart…Open up your home, and share your time and love with them. EVERY cat deserves a family, love, and above all, a long and happy life!!!

Another thing that you can do is to complain to them. Sometimes, our voices will not be heard alone, but in numbers, we can be heard, by even the most closed-off ears! Complain to them about not having a fostering program or allowing people to foster in an unofficial capacity in the absence of one!…Complain that they will not work with rescues!…Complain that they bring animals in from a huge radius only to kill them, and that the person who does so seems to like it–as disturbing as that is. (:-() Petition, write, call…Let your voice be heard! I don’t want the same travesty to happen again!…And, I’m sick over the fact that it happened at all!!!

This is the contact information for the shelter:

Humane Society of Port Jervis/Deerpark Inc.

202 Route 209
Port Jervis NY 12771
Phone: 845-856-3677

Tell them that they need to start a foster program, and tell them that they have failed these animals, and it has to stop!!!

And, as I said, before, if you can adopt, please, do. These animals need us, in whatever ways that we can help them. I implore you to help them, and to bring situations like this to a stop!–No animal “shelter” should be killing the animals!…Municipal facilities or not, 2-legged citizens are NOT the only ones who deserve respect!!! When “shelters” say that they “need to ‘make room’” for more animals, to “get them off the streets”, it is flawed “logic” supporting a broken system based on compassion-less humans who erroneously believe themselves to be “superior”….It is NOT their job to round animals up and send them to their deaths!!!….In situations like those, the animals stand a better chance on the streets. (:-\)

Help me bring the terrible practices of this facility and others to an end, and bring about a lasting era of compassion for all!!!
