This is what I like to see and as I get older, find myself being drawn to. Products based on classic American stylings but with subtle or, in some cases like this, drastic changes. Saddle shoes. Murdered out. Enough said.

These particular shoes are a collaboration between British brand George Cox and Japanese brand Cause. I don’t care who makes them to be honest, they’re just dope. If you don’t mind ordering your shoes direct from Japan, you can order these beauties today from FLAUGE.

But have you had your baby’s spine checked for nerve interference?

Often a newborn’s spine can be harmed during the birth process. A normal, uncomplicated delivery puts 90 lbs. of compressive pressure on a newborn’s delicate spine. One medical study of 1,250 babies examined 5 days after birth showed that 95% had spinal misalignments related to the birth process, causing lowered immunity, poor digestion, and sleeplessness.

Babies are gently adjusted using low-force techniques equal to the pressure on a touch-tone phone, reconnecting their nerve system, giving them a great start in life.

Here’s the story from Steve McIntyre. (H/T Story from Watts Up With That via ECM)

Excerpt:

“Hide the decline” refers to the decline in the Briffa MXD temperature reconstruction in the last half of the 20th century, a decline that called into question the validity of the tree ring reconstructions. (I’m going to analyze the letters on another occasion.) In the IPCC Third and Fourth Assessment Reports, IPCC “hid the decline” by simply deleting the post-1960 values of the troublesome Briffa reconstruction – an artifice that Gavin Schmidt characterizes as an “a good way to deal with a problem” and tells us that there is “nothing problematic” about such an artifice (see here.

Not only were the post-1960 values of the Briffa reconstruction not shown in the IPCC 2001 report – an artifice that Gavin describes as being “hidden in plain sight”, they were deleted from the archived version of the reconstruction at NOAA here (note: the earlier Briffa 2000 data here does contain a related series through to 1994.)

Here’s the graph, with the decline added back in.

Hide The Decline

Wow, look at that decline that somehow wasn’t included in the graphs made the global warming alarmists. Did they use a trick to hide the decline?

Hide the decline

And here’s a catchy video to help you remember all of this. (H/T Lex Communis)

The scary part is that two of my leftist friends still kept their faith in global warming after this scandal broke. It’s a religion, but one that is diconfirmed by the evidence.

I was quite embarrassed to have edited and re-edited my last post about a hundred times only to have my sister point out the fact that I had written about boys in a bottle instead of boys in a battle. Yikes.

However, I have been (mostly) freed of the desire to run and hide my blushing face after reading a blog post by author Donald Miller. In the post, he relives the moment when he reads a major typo in his first book that had just been published.

The sentence was supposed to read:

“We were walking into the meadow. I was walking with my hands in my pockets.”

But instead it said:

“We were walking into the meadow. I was walking with my hands in his pockets.”

Also yikes. Donald then opens his blog’s comment section for readers of his latest book, A Million Miles in a Thousand Years, to tell him about any typos they find. And there are a lot.

Basically, this is just to say I hope to not make many major blunders in the future, but please feel free to point out if I’ve written I have my hand in someone else’s back pocket.

[also ps: ever wish that what you wear could do more than just make a statement? check back soon to find out about an awesome organization that sells great t-shirts with a cause.]

I’m not usually the sort that bugs people to believe in or support a cause. I’m wise en

I’m not usually the sort that bugs people to believe in or support a cause. I’m wise enough to know that we all have causes that call to our own sense of compassion, empathy, or whatever fabric of your being that is drawn to benefiting others. I hope you will forgive this contradiction of sort – though I expect any of you finding this page will have only found it searching for the subject.

The last few years have made me distinctly more socially aware than I was before. I believe we all have a nature within us that demands of ourselves to try and search for an altruistic intention -or higher cause. Awakening to my own hurt -some self-inflicted- really heightened my feelings of empathy, sympathy, and compassion. I guess this is what they mean to grow old. My perception of Buddhist texts would say this is drawing upon our five negative emotions and turning them into the five “ultimate” wisdom’s.

I try not to only allow myself to measure my path through these illusions and disillusions. I don’t see oneself as being able to see through all of their own illusions of self . In absence of a true measurement, I try and allow my conscious to dictate my awareness of my contributions and vices. I will continue trying to see clearly, being compassionate to myself and to all beings - I have deep gratitude towards all. I could not exist without any of you. We all have good and negative contributions. I try and stay mindful and accept at moments I will fail, but continue on trying . . .

I use the Buddhist texts as reference as they ask of us to perceive everyone we meet as our potential mothers and fathers. Stephen Lewis tells of the stories of the Grandmothers in Africa. Grandmother’s in Africa take a large role in their families, as many children are left orphaned by the disease.

And with that introduction …

The Stephen Lewis Foundation supports community-based organizations working to turn the tide of HIV/AIDS in Africa. Since 2003, we have funded more than 300 projects in 15 countries. These grassroots groups are the lifeline for their communities: they provide counselling and education about HIV care, prevention and treatment; distribute food, medication and other necessities; reach the sick and vulnerable though home-based health care; help orphans and vulnerable children access education and work through their grief; and support grandmothers caring for their orphaned grandchildren.

Many of us in developed countries tend to take much of our wealth for granted. Our lives are busy, hectic, and bustling with never-ending demands that we demand of ourselves. And compassion for yourself needs to begin first before benefiting others.

Without wanting to make an emotional call myself , or the opposing sphere of giving you statistics of a true pandemic in the developing world – I, simply, request you to take a look at The Stephen Lewis Foundation. The founder of the Stephen Lewis Foundation, Stephen Lewis, was the United Nations special envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, and has led many initiatives for raising awareness of the toll HIV/AIDS is taking on Africa. He gives a very emotional depiction of the situation and calls upon us in the developed world to help defeat this disease in the book ‘A Race Against Time’ (the link points to a page at the stephenlewisfoundation.org that points to a cbc.ca transcript of an interview with him) – the book can be purchased here. I will allow the book to speak for herself.

I have nothing but admiration for this man.

In an episode of TV5’s The Evening News segment, Word of the Lourd, titled Walang Silbi Ang Art?, Pa

In an episode of TV5’s The Evening News segment, Word of the Lourd, titled Walang Silbi Ang Art?, Palanca Award-winning writer and TV personality Lourd de Veyra asked a question that echoes that of many Filipinos when it comes to art. “May silbi ba ang sining para iangat ang pamumuhay ng taong bayan (Does art have any purpose to uplift the masses from their suffering)?” he asked. The segment, which aired in February 2009, in connection to National Arts Month, featured de Veyra expressing his opinions on the purpose of art in the country where many go hungry. “May isa pang tanong (there is one more question),” de Veyra added. “Nakakain mo ba ang sining? (Can art be eaten)?”

The notion of art as merely a decorative piece, devoid of social function and utility is a common one. The idea has, after all, come from a historical tradition where works of art were commissioned by the upper classes of society for artisans to make, used to decorate their homes with or simply as a collector’s item. Also, in a country where many have more on their plate to concern themselves with other than decorating their homes, art is inevitably thought of as insignificant. “Kahit magikot-ikot ka sa Pilipinas, iba ang tingin sa art (Wherever you go in the Philippines, art is looked at differently),” says artist Alma Quinto. “Masyado pa rin traditional, napakataas (It’s still very traditional, unreachable).”

But as the articles in this series have shown, there is more to art than being just a display piece. Come past that era in history where art was merely a collector’s item, art then became a means for the artisan-turned-artist to express his or her ideas. Art became a medium. And as a medium, every work of art has something to say.

The medium and the messages

The protest artists of the 70s for instance had something to say about the Marcos dictatorship and the rights of Filipinos that were violated or taken away. Through their art they expressed what they saw was wrong, and at the same time fought for what they knew was right. The formation of the first artist groups in the country, the Nagkakaisang Progresibong Artista at Arkitekto and the Kaisahan, brought about art that showed what was truly happening to Filipinos and were expressive of the nation’s collective sentiments toward the Marcos government.

Even the materials used to make art are expressive in themselves. Environmental art featured in exhibits for example, utilize recycled materials to better convey their messages. In doing so, they also put to practice what they preach: conserving and protecting the environment by making better use of garbage.

Participants of art therapy workshops, on the other hand, are aided by art to express themselves. Especially those who have been physically abused and emotionally wounded, their artworks have stories to tell; stories that could not be told any other way. As clinical psychologist Ryan San Diego explained, these participants are able to think of what has happened to them, explore through their works of art what they are feeling, and later reflect on their experiences through their artworks; a process through which they aim to recover. Through art, these participants are able to express what they do not have the words for.

And like every sector of society, artists have their own way of responding to and addressing social issues. Education is only one of these issues, and artists do what they do best in tackling the problem: they create works of art. Such artwork-commentaries are being featured in the State Of the education Nation Address, or SOeNA, an exhibit on the country’s state of education being launched by artist initiative TutoK in December 2009.

However, creating artworks is not the end-all, be-all of their work as artists. As a medium, their art serves to raise awareness on important matters, eventually—hopefully—leading to a more enlightened and pro-active people.

Spreading the word about art

One of TutoK’s goals, says Co-founder Karen Flores, is to “normalize” art. “I think it’s a good thing to normalize art. We don’t want to be put in a special place,” she said, referring to the way people view art as elitist. While, again, this view has its historical basis in that it was always the elite who had access to art, it is no longer solely of the elite’s domain. As a medium and form of expression, art is for everyone. “There are ways of putting art to mass appreciation,” said Flores. “I think we will get to that when art is finally freed from that pedestal. It’s time to see art beyond being just a museum piece,” she said.

Efforts to promote art’s role as an important medium for driving social discourse are being propagated not only by TutoK, but by organizations such as the Center for Art, New Ventures and Sustainable Development (CANVAS) and the Outlooke Pointe Foundation (OPF), which both believe in the significant role of art in society.

CANVAS in particular, believes in utilizing art to drive discussions on social issues and leading the search for a national identity. The OPF on the other hand, believes in the potential of art as a vehicle in propagating nationalism. Moreover, through the activities they carry out to promote their advocacies, both organizations highlight the richness of artistic talent in the country as well, giving us all the more reason to value art in the country.

So nakakain nga ba ang art (can art really be eaten)?

Yet aside from the messages works of art want to and are able to express, what else exactly does it contribute to the country? What does art do? Does it establish justice and equality of rights as the proletariat classes yearn for in fighting for national freedom? Does it put an end to corruption, and put away those responsible for the suffering of the masses?

While it spares the environment of excess trash that are made into artworks instead; while it relieves trauma victims of the stress wrought by depression and fear by allowing them to vent; and while it keeps people talking about matters that need to be addressed—how much change, exactly, does art achieve in proportion to the change it advocates?

These are questions whose answers are difficult to quantify, if there are answers at all. Asked how art could bring about change in society, 2003 Thirteen Artists Awardee Mideo Cruz said—albeit referring to literary works of art—“What was your reaction when you read the poems of Amado Hernandez? Or if you let the masses read it, does it have a direct effect? How many people have read Noli & Fili (Jose Rizal’s novels, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo); which high school student rebelled from the church after reading Noli and Fili?” Change, he said, is difficult to measure. “How do you gage? It’s difficult; it depends on the times how art directly has an involvement in society,” he said.

Artist Wesley Valenzuela, on the other hand, offers another particular opinion. “When you talk about social transformation exactly, something bigger than art is what is needed,” he admitted. “Art, probably it could inspire, but I do not think art could change people.”

In “New and Varied Initiatives in Arts Education for Cultural Development in the Philippine Society”, an essay published in a book called Educating in the Arts (2008), artist and educator Dr. Brenda Fajardo wrote how “not many realize that the culture of Philippine society is very rich, strong and solid.” With this there is much more to think about than the problems brought about by the need to survive and get by another day, she explained.

“[Art] is what makes your life rich or poor,” she said. “If you have a rich cultural life you’ll not be so sad or depressed and pessimistic.” With art, she said, people are inspired to look beyond their everyday concerns. “People need to be aware of this strength and understand and appreciate the treasures of their cultural heritage in order to balance their everyday pessimism.”

Thus it is through art that we find meaning. “Art is a protest against meaninglessness,” said artist Jose Tence Ruiz. “It is about humans saying something about being in this world,” he added. Sociology and anthropology professor Enrico Baula from De La Salle University echoes this, saying that art gives people more than what there seems to be in the material world. “[Art] doesn’t only make us value our culture, make us value our environment, make us value our spirituality,” said Baula. “Art basically just gives life meaning,” he said.

And while it might take more than art to bring about a real transformation of society, art itself has been doing its part. As a medium it holds in it what it means to yearn for change and expresses it. And with all its different causes, created to serve these different purposes, art’s place in society is better defined.

Before you write an essay, you need to find a subject to write about. To do this, you need to take a broad subject into consideration. Then try to narrow the subject down to make a very specific topic to discuss.

Narrowing the subject as your topic is important because it limits the ideas to discuss and gives you a chance to write an efficient essay without missing the important points about the subject.

I chose to write about “health.” But this is a very broad topic to discuss! Besides, I need to write a cause and effect essay. So I should think of a way to include a phenomenon and its causes or effects in my writing. I decided to make my title go through the following steps to become a practical topic:

Health

Our modern life brings unhealthy life.

We do not eat well.

We eat fast food. But why?

Ah-huh! Why do we eat fast food?

Because they are popular! Why!?

I finally came to realize that the best topic to write for now is The causes of the popularity of fast food in the modern societies. If you want to write a scientific research report, the mentioned title is the best for a descriptive cause and effect writing. But if your writing is meant for something other than scientific purposes, you can write a title according to the taste of the purpose you are writing the essay for.

Faster, Easier, Better “Delicious,” one might praise the hamburger before him on the tab

Faster, Easier, Better

“Delicious,” one might praise the hamburger before him on the table while he is nodding his head as a compliment with his jaw crushing the food prepared in fifteen minutes. Eight hours later, he will express the same compliment in front of his friends in a party in favor of the fast food ordered from a pizzeria in the neighborhood. But who really realizes how fast food has entered our lives so quickly and has become so popular that the lives of many are dependent on it? The fast pace of its spreading popularity -if felt- is, however, tangible for those who are involved in fast food industry. Such popularity has been earned because of two main reasons.

The most important reason why people prefer fast food is the modern lifestyle. Modern lifestyle hardly leaves enough time for people to cook or to spend time learning to prepare meals. According to many surveys in 15 European countries, many people prefer to buy their lunch from fast food restaurants rather than taking a home-prepared lunch to work. The modern lifestyle also urges women to work outside. In societies where women work, there is a little emphasis on acquiring handiness for doing house chores, especially cooking. As a result, the families do not have the traditional, skilled mother as the cook in their homes while the father is hunting. Both the wife and the husband are now the hunters and such a lifestyle will leave the cooking duty for the fast food restaurants!

Still there are many people who can cook at home, but they prefer to eat outside. The other reason for the popularity of fast food is its variety. There are many kinds of a single fast food available for different tastes. For example, one can find a hamburger of several types with different tastes and different prices. In a short time, nobody will ever be able to improve his skills in preparing so many types of food; the consumers prefer to take the easiest step and just stop by a restaurant to have access to a whole catalog of dozens of foods available. Besides, the variety of the foods automatically entices the consumers to try each kind and find their favorite. Typically, the consumers will find more than one favorite kind of food because in modern societies, there can be found dozens of restaurants with dozens of different kinds of fast food in a single city.

Many scientists these days have come to a common belief that the fast foods we use are harmful for our health because of the measures taken to prepare them in the fastest ways possible. Despite this fact, a huge majority of people in modern societies still eat fast foods for their lunch and even for all three main meals of the day. Nowadays not only can we buy them from local restaurants, but also we can buy them in neat packages to later warm the in our microwave ovens for only half a minute. Surely our lifestyle and the variety of fast food have contributed a lot to our preferring fast foods over home-made foods. However, there is an idea in my mind worth pondering; why don’t we consider finding a way to prepare our home-made foods faster, so that we would have our mothers cooking for us in the restaurants?

When leaders at Seacoast Church in Mount Pleasant, SC read the statistic that North Charleston was the 7th most dangerous city in America, they quickly agreed that something had to be done. No reason exists why we should comfortably and lavishly live within 20 miles of this obviously distressed city. Within a few months, pastors and community volunteers joined together to launch what is now known as the North Charleston Dream Center. This center presently operates a medical clinic, a food pantry, and a clothes closet on top of its weekly services and outreach ministries. They are feeding, tutoring, and mentoring children so we can begin the process of breaking the cycle of poverty and violence. And the response from the North Charleston community has been incredible. Through a monthly “Adopt-a-Block” outreach ministry, volunteers are venturing into some of the most discouraged communities and offering hope. Most of these families are not unlike millions around the country–they have been beaten down by our economy and are struggling to provide for their families. Either unemployed or underemployed, these families know what it is to be in need and The North Charleston Dream Center is doing everything they can to help satisfy some of those needs. This Christmas, as you think back to your past year, you may find more understanding and empathy than in years past. This has been a difficult year for a lot of families and it is the perfect time to come together for such a worthy cause.
(www.seacoast.org- North Charleston Campus)

And so, with that end in mind, I invite you to come to Christmas With A Cause! On December 11th, from 8:00 pm- 11:00 pm, Granville’s Restaurant will be Partnering with the North Charleston Dream Center to raise money for families in need. For $10 at the door, you will enjoy a night of Trae Wilson’s culinary masterpieces and music with ALL of the proceeds going to families in our community. You will be able to connect with the individual stories of the families and with the vision of the Dream Center, write letters, and give more if you feel led. You will leave knowing that you have been a part of something truly magical. And, if that’s not enough, there will also be incredible door prizes that range from restaurant gift certificates to overnight stays at some of our city’s top hotels…perfect for Holiday gifts!

Here on Watts Up With That.

Here are a few of my favorites, with links to the original e-mails.

Phil Jones writes to University of Hull to try to stop sceptic Sonia Boehmer Christiansen using her Hull affiliation. Graham F Haughton of Hull University says its easier to push greenery there now SB-C has retired.(1256765544)

Michael Mann discusses how to destroy a journal that has published sceptic papers.(1047388489)

Tim Osborn discusses how data are truncated to stop an apparent cooling trend showing up in the results (0939154709). Analysis of impact here. Wow!

Phil Jones encourages colleagues to delete information subject to FoI (Freedom of Information) request.(1212063122)

Phil Jones says he has use Mann’s “Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series”…to hide the decline”. Real Climate says “hiding” was an unfortunate turn of phrase.(0942777075)

Kevin Trenberth says they can’t account for the lack of recent warming and that it is a travesty that they can’t.(1255352257)

Tom Wigley discusses how to deal with the advent of FoI law in UK. Jones says use IPR argument to hold onto code. Says data is covered by agreements with outsiders and that CRU will be “hiding behind them”.(1106338806)

Reaction to McIntyre’s 2005 paper in GRL. Mann has challenged GRL editor-in-chief over the publication. Mann is concerned about the connections of the paper’s editor James Saiers with U Virginia [does he mean Pat Michaels?]. Tom Wigley says that if Saiers is a sceptic they should go through official GRL channels to get him ousted. (1106322460) [Note to readers - Saiers was subsequently ousted]

Later on Mann refers to the leak at GRL being plugged.(1132094873)

It goes on and on. There are FORTY-SEVEN of these.

Selamat berbakti!

Story from Michael Goldfarb of the Weekly Standard. (H/T ECM)

Excerpt:

With the release of hundreds of emails by scientists advocates of global warming showing obvious and entirely inappropriate collusion by the authors — including attempts to suppress dissent, to punish journals that publish peer-reviewed studies casting doubt on global warming, and to manipulate data to bolster their own arguments — even the New York Times is forced to concede that “the documents will undoubtedly raise questions about the quality of research on some specific questions and the actions of some scientists.” But apparently the paper’s environmental blog, Dot Earth, is taking a pass on publishing any of the documents and emails that are now circulating.

[...]This is the position of the New York Times when given the chance to publish sensitive information that might hinder the liberal agenda. Of course, when the choice is between publishing classified information that might endanger the lives of U.S. troops in the field or intelligence programs vital to national security, that information is published without hesitation by the nation’s paper of record.

Nobody starts writing from the very first moment they are supposed to write. There are some steps to write a cause and effect essay. The steps presented here are for an efficient 5-paragraph cause and effect essay. First, we start from the structure then, with an example.

Introduction Paragraph

With something catchy, introduce what you want to discuss. (You can write about anything which is relevant to the topic in important ways.)

Try to define the meaning of what you want to talk about. (e.g. If your topic is about the effects of child abuse, try to bring its definitions from several sources.)

This step is writing your Blueprint. Mention the causes -or the effects- of the phenomenon in short. (Do not explain them. You are going to do this in the body paragraphs.)

Body Paragraph 1

You need to develop your first body paragraph on the basis of the first cause -or effect- you mentioned in the introduction. Do not forget that you need to observe the paragraph writing rules to write a powerful paragraph.

Body Paragraph 2

You need to develop your second body paragraph on the basis of the second cause -or effect- you mentioned in the introduction. You can also connect the paragraphs with each other through transitional words.

Body Paragraph 3

You need to develop your third body paragraph on the basis of the third cause -or effect- you mentioned in the introduction. Do not forget the topic sentence and the supporting sentences.

Concluding Paragraph

In the concluding paragraph, it is better to give a summary of important points in other words. It is like the summary of your essay. Neither explain again nor mention the ideas exactly like you explained or mentioned in the essay. Try to use other words and sentences to make your paragraph look graceful. It also shows your skill in talking about the same idea in different sophisticated sentences.

At the end, you can end you writing with a clincher -a point, fact, or remark that settles something conclusively; it is a decisive factor and ends your essay beautifully.
