Blown away.

I don’t know any other way to describe my reaction upon first hearing this disc.  After numerous listens, I only like it better.   This is exactly how I like this music to sound…cacophonous distorted noise honed down to an impossibly tight and rhythmic science.

Power grooves rule the day (which is just fine by me) starting with leadoff disgustipation and title cut Inflikted.    Hearing the Cavalera brothers reunited again just magnifies what an incredible driving force the two were behind Sepultura.  Honestly, I could see where this would have been a perfect follow-up to 1996’s groundbreaking Roots disc, bringing everything back to the basics and somehow making it better.

Which is just how I would describe this disc overall…back to the basics with even better songs and tighter grooves.  Sometimes it’s okay to just be the best at what you do and revel in your “thang.”   Cavalera Conspiracy, while whipping up some speed in places, slams down their “thang” (i.e. POWER groove) like no one else and I find myself entranced by the whole smear.

The aforementioned title track, Sanctuary, Bloodbrawl, Hex, Heart of Darkness, MustKill…honestly there’s not a weak track anywhere to be found.   There are some nice curveballs in there, as well, such as the gorgeous acoustic outro to Bloodbrawl.

The Cavalera Brothers have creativity, but beyond creativity you have to have heart for this kind of music to have any remote chance of working.   Environmental issues, unjust repression of people, the plight of Brazilian aboriginees…Max Cavalera always has substance behind his roar.

I put this one on repeat shuffle play for hours and it just doesn’t wear on me at all.   Arrangements are tidy, lead guitar work is stellar and the drums are just ridiculously tight.   Don’t look for anything groundbreaking here.   Max, Igor and Co. are stomping on the ground they broke 15 years ago, and everything I love about this kind of music is on this disc.

Which is just fine by me.   Gotta thank Dave at CD Warehouse in Lancaster, PA for introducing me to this gem.

Em 1997, Max Cavalera abandonou o Sepultura por problemas pessoais. E nos primeiros álbuns do Soulfly podemos perceber para qual direção Max pretendia seguir após o Roots. Em 2006, Igor Cavalera alegando “incompatibilidades artísticas” anuncia a mídia que estava deixando a banda.

O que se sabe é que os irmãos Cavalera não se falavam desde que Max saiu do Sepultura nos anos 90, mas assim que Igor cortou ligações com o Sepultura Max o procurou para acabar com a briga de merda entre eles.

Com o fim da briga entre Max e Igor, eles começaram a criar um projeto em companhia de Marc Rizzo, que era o guitarrista do Soulfly e do Joe Duplantier, baixista da banda Gojira.

No inicio do projeto, o nome da banda seria Inflikted, mas por alguns problemas judiciais, o nome foi mudado para Cavalera Conspiracy, que por sinal, é um nome bem mais chamativo e possui um certo tom de provocação. Inflikted então se tornou o nome do álbum e de uma das músicas.

Cavalera Conspiracy moldou seu som em Thrash Metal e lançou a bolacha em 2008.
O álbum saiu como um murro na cara dos que acreditavam que o Cavalera Conspiracy faria uma bosta de álbum. Inflikted possui Peso, velocidade e o estilo Max Cavalera que conhecemos e que criou o seu nome dentro do Metal. Igor tocou como não tocava a um bom tempo. Você percebe que o cara estava realmente empolgado com este projeto.

Um grande número de boatos apareceu ligando o som dessa nova banda ao clássico Arise do sepultura, mas isso não atrapalhou o sucesso que este álbum fez.

Max e Igor criaram um dos melhores álbuns de Metal desta década, e eu rezo para que o Cavalera Conspiracy não feche as suas portas tão cedo.

Happy birthday Igor! That’s right, the drummer of Brazil’s finest export is 39 today! As such I thought it was time we recognised how good Sepultura actually were. Metal aficianado’s will know that yes Sepultura are still going, but they’re nowhere near as good as they were when Max was still singing (for those not in the know, Max is Igor’s older brother).

Sepultura are a Brazilian thrash metal group whose debut album was released in 1986 and wasn’t really all that good. Compared to the later releases it had an entirely different feel and wasn’t really pointing a big fat heavy metal finger at the world. Sepultura’s golden moment though came with 1996’s Roots which recieved gold status in over 4 countries and was featured in Kerrang!’s ‘100 Records You Have To Hear Before Dying’.

Roots was the last album to feature Max Cavalera on vocal duties, he was to be replaced by Derrick Green. Despite the fact that Green is a fantastic singer and a good replacement for Max, it just wasn’t the same. Igor did not leave Sepultura until 2006 due to reported “artistic incompatibility”. He joined his brother again a year later for Cavalera Conspiracy who are a great example of a heavy metal supergroup featuring members of Gojira and Max’s other band Soulfly.

Currently Igor and Max are touring with Cavalera Conspiracy and Sepultura released a Cavalera-free album earlier this year which recieved fairly positive feedback. So here are some of Sepultura’s best songs – in my opinion, if you disagree then please post yours below.

El metal latinoamericano o sudamericano llegó a los máximos niveles con la banda brasileña Sepultura, que a finales de los 80’s y mediados de los 90’s, impuso su calidad, llegando ser considerados en un tiempo como la banda número uno de metal en el mundo, incluso por encima de Metallica, que mientras estos se suavizaban, los hermanos Max e Igor Cavalera se hacían más duros y mostraban que tenían muy claro su camino musical.

Actualmente Sepultura podría ser llamado Andreas Kisser and his band, pues los fundadores Max e Igor salieron de la agrupación en diferentes años y el único que queda de la alineación original es el guitarrista, que a veces acostumbra tocar con los alemanes de Scorpions. Para fortuna de los fans, el sonido poderoso aún lo conservan.

Max e Igor Cavalera por su lado, se reconciliaron musicalmente, tras la abrupta separación a finales de los años 90’s, y formaron el proyecto Cavalera Conspiracy, banda que también toca los clásicos de Sepultura, actuando mayormente en territorio europeo. 

Argentina también nos ha dado bandas metaleras de categoría, como los ya legendarios Rata Blanca, que con su clásico “La leyenda del Hada y el Mago” demostraron que en Sudamérica también hay excelentes guitarristas que dominan el difícil estilo del neoclásico.

Malon es otra banda argentina, que a pesar de no tener una exposición a nivel latinoamericano, siempre me ha agradado la actitud tan agresiva que tienen en el escenario. Si fuera cantante realmente estaría influenciado por el estilo vocal de Claudio O’ Connor.

A.N.I.M.A.L. es otra de las  bandas del país de Maradona, que incendiaron el ambiente rockero latinoamericano a mediados de los 90’s,  principalmente cuando tuvieron gran exposición en Headbangers Balls Latinoamérica de MTV.

Brasil no sólo tiene a Sepultura, sino a los metaleros progresivos de Angra, que tienen más un estilo europeo, que  cualquiera podría confundirlos con alguna banda de Noruega o Dinamarca.

Antes de Transmetal, una banda que se posicionó como la más representativa del heavy metal en México fue Luzbel, donde su guitarrista Raúl “Greñas” era considerado como el mejor guitarrista de rock duro del suelo azteca, y a él le gustaba contar sus experiencias en Inglaterra donde tuvo un gran aprendizaje musical y vivencial.

So, since this shiny bit of space is my domain and I find myself pretty bored (not to mention procrastinating) a great deal at the moment, I figured I should take ample opportunity of this blog’s benefits and pontificate about whatever idle thought comes to mind. That way you, potential follower, can get to know me and make a better assessment of what exactly you’re going to find in this space, should you visit regularly.

This had to be one of my proudest moments of being a rock photographer.  I go way back with these guys…we are family.  I received a phone call from Gloria Cavalera telling me that Max and Igor were back together and going into the studio…and they wanted me with them to snap away and document the whole thing. I had been waiting for this call for a long, long time.

This was the birth of The Cavalera Conspiracy.

This was the very first official photo of Max and Igor together as band-mates since Sepultura disbanded. I shot this set-up of Max and Igor for Revolver Magazine. The mag was just as excited as I was…they ran this photo as a full page.  Well deserved!

Long time I wanted to write about this album, found it today and said: here we go! So, what can I say? As Dinho Ouro Preto would say: “It kicks ass!!” Easy like that.

This new band in area sets the musical (and personal) return of friendship from two old friends of ours, the brothers Max and Igor Cavalera.

Everyone knows the story (or at least should know!!). The brothers, who used to live in the neighborhood of Santa Tereza in Belo Horizonte, created Sepultura in 1984, going against the Clube da Esquina movement who was also born around.

Thousands of albums later, tour dates in Europe and in the United States and 12 years after, the unthinkable happened, Max (vocals and guitar) fought with the rest of the guys and leaves the band (who returns the jobs later with Derrick Green).

Another 10 years away and, in the middle of 2006, its Igor´s turn to leave the group. It was a almost dead stroke (specially when the wounds from ´96 weren´t completely healed) but the young Jean Dolabella (old Diesel/Udora drummer) arrives with angry and bringing new blood.

While Sepultura was trying to survive, Max Cavalera appeared with a new band (Soulfly) and rises his name, specially in America.

As fast as Igor left the band (when they were still celebrating the good results from DanteXXI album) a few rumours started to take place saying that he was going to play with Max. The rumours became true and so Cavalera Conspiracy was born.

Their starting album is impetuous and with no fussy, angry and fast. It sounds almost like a present for the fans who´d still dream seeing old Sepultura reunited and, wasn´t for the solo guitar, many times it seems like good times are back. Max´s brutal vocal, shouts and Igor´s tribal drums are together again.

Besides the already classics Inflikted and Sanctuary, my favorite songs so far are Hex, Bloodbrawl and The Doom Of All Fires. Going through Dark Ark and Terrorize.

Now, in fact, if you hear it in one time, the album becomes repetitive and tiresome. Beyond that, have heard so much screaming for, drums and loud solos. The best is to hear one music here, another there and so it goes. With that you like the most the rush of the moment.

Still about Cavalera Conspiracy, they say that, because of the good reception of this job, they shall make a second one, and, if god allows, a world tour. In this case I hope that, in addition to celebrating the good phase in family, they can redeem with their hometown.

Os Cavalera Conspiracy são uma banda constituída por Max Cavalera (Voz, guitarra), o seu irmão Igor Cavalera (Bateria), Marc Rizzo (guitarra) e Joe Duplantier (Baixo, segunda voz). Ambos os irmãos Cavalera pertenceram à mitica banda Sepultura.

O Senhor Pavarotti teve oportunidade de fazer um dueto com os Sepultura, resultando a fantástica Roots Bloody Roots (vídeo não oficial, claro):

As suas letras falam de ecologia, da opressão das tribos amazónicas, do progresso e do capitalismo (basta ouvir o albúm Roots para o comprovar).

Após outros projectos de Max e de Igor, foram formados os Cavalera Conspiracy que, ao vivo, tocam várias músicas dos Sepultura como é o caso da Troops of Doom.

Chamo a atenção para o baterista, que aqui não é o Igor Cavalera, mas sim o filho de Igor Cavalera, com 13 anos.

Com uma família assim, só podia dar bom resultado!

Cavalera Conspiracy

Following a brief reunion the 10th Annual D-Low Memorial Show in 2006, Sepultura founders Max Cavalera and Igor Cavalera began to write music together again. The band initially formed in mid-2007 with Max Cavalera (Soulfly, ex-Sepultura) on vocals and rhythm guitar, Igor Cavalera (ex-Sepultura) on drums, Soulfly guitarist Marc Rizzo and Joe Duplantier (Gojira) on bass. Originally, Max chose the name Inflikted for the project, but the name has been used before. As a result, he changed the name to Cavalera Conspiracy in order to avoid potential legal conflicts which would hold up the album release, and chose to use the name Inflikted for the band’s debut album.

Cavalera Conspiracy’s debut album was released by Roadrunner Records on March 24, 2008. The album, entitled Inflikted, was recorded at Undercity Studios in Los Angeles, CA, with engineer and co-producer Logan Mader in July 2007. Inflikted featured a guest appearance on bass from former Pantera and current Down bass player, Rex Brown, on the track, “Ultra-Violent”. In addition, Max’s stepson Ritchie Cavalera of the Phoenix based group Incite guested on vocals on the song “Black Ark”. Artwork for the album was created by Surface to Air. Surface to Air also directed the video for Cavalera Conspiracy’s debut digital single, “Sanctuary” in January 2008 in Paris, France.

On June 2nd, 2008, it was revealed on the band’s official website that Joe Duplantier will not perform on the 2008 tour in order to begin the writing/recording process for Gojira’s upcoming fourth studio album. Duplantier was replaced by Johny Chow of the stoner metal band Fireball Ministry.[1]. Cavalera Conspiracy completed a European tour in mid-2008 including appearances at the Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium, the Hellfest Summer Open Air in France, the Download Festival held at Donington, UK, other festival appearances, select dates opening on Judas Priest’s Priest Feast 2008 Tour, and headlining shows. In late summer of 2008, Cavalera Conspiracy embarked on the North American infliktour featuring performances at Monsters of Rock in Canada, Ozzfest in Dallas, Texas, and headling dates with Dillinger Escape Plan, Throwdown, Bury Your Dead, and Incite.[2] During this tour, the band performed varied setlists consisting of Cavalera Conspiracy songs, many Sepultura songs, Nailbomb songs, and other covers. Max’s son and Iggor’s nephew Igor played the drums on Sepultura’s classic “Troops of Doom” at several shows throughout the band’s 2008 tour.

Tá aí outro CD que me impressionou ano passado: Inflicted vem para dar um fim na briguinha de Higor e Max Cavalera que vem des do Roots (Sepultura) e prova que os dois separados não são lá grande coisa, mas juntos… Pelamordedeus!

É inevitável linkar esse CD com os primeiros e maravilhosos discos do Sepultura, e, graças a deus, sem aquelas papagaiadas tribais que des do Roots nos atormenta

Essa é uma versão da música “Roots Bloody Roots” do Sepultura, interpretada por ninguém menos que os Irmãos Cavalera, que estão juntos novamente realizando um excelente trabalho com a banda Cavalera Conspiracy. Quem me mostrou esse vídeo foi meu amigo Topo Malaba.

A apresentação abaixo foi realizada em Belfort na Fraça e teve a transmissão do canal Multishow, reparem na energia e na interatividade do Max Cavalera com a Platéia.

Para quem não sabe (pois é um fato do ano passado), os irmãos Iggor e Max Cavalera, do Sepultura, estão de volta com a banda Cavalera Conspiracy.

Surf music é algo bem amplo, vai desde bossa nova, passando pelo reggae, dub, folk music, rock’n'roll, punk rock, e por que não o metal? Sempre curti o som do Sepultura, e fiquei extremamente chateado com a saída do Max da banda, na década passada. A voz dele era uma das principais características do Sepultura, aquele grito áspero, porém compreensível, que dá para entender a letra.

Enfim, entre muitos “vai-e-vens”, os irmãos estão de volta.

E um dia desses, estava eu trabalhando em casa na madruga, e resolvo ligar a TV. Era umas 4h00 e começa a passar um show do Cavalera Conspiracy, e em um clássico do Sepultura, “Troops of Doom”, o filho do Max (Iggor Jr.) entra para tocar bateria. Não botei uma fé que ele tocaria bem, mas, o muleque mandou muito bem.

Iggor Cavalera  and Laima Leyton have a very busy life even when he’s not out on the road with his brother Max in the Cavalera Conspiracy. Ever since he left Sepultura in 2006, he and his wife have been working as the brilliantly creative Brazillian electro-duo MIXHELL, touring the world and gaining much praise within underground beat circles for their MPC/turntable/drum-driven beat heavy ruckus. Oh yeah, and they’ve got FIVE young children (who just so happen to operate MIXHELL’s blog – cute!). It’s a very hard task to make a serious leap from the metal community to the djing world, but with some good friendships (such as their association’s with James Murphy or Justice) and some awesome music, anything can happen. …Even while raising a family.

Last week, our favorite overseas electronic connection posted a superb mix that MIXHELL completed for Mishka’s Keep Watch! series, and it deserves a mention here. Just listen to the opening Metallica “For Whom The Bells Tolls” Intro! How are these guys NOT playing sold out shows in big American clubs? They need to get on a good tour sometime soon, because something tells me that if American electro/dance fans got wind of MIXHELL, they’d storm the scene.
