When we are CD manufacturing discs by either CD replication or CD duplication your finished CD product is usually printed.

Two popular methods of CD Printing are Silk Screen CD Print and Offset Litho CD Print.

There are three stages to the CD printing process. First your digital artwork file has to be transferred to film. The finished film looks a little like an over head projector transparancy in black only outputting one film per colour for just the areas of the design which contain that ink colour.

One film is produced per printing colour which is typically 5 in a set being a C – Cyan, M – Magenta, Y- Yellow, K – Black and W – White.

For silk screen CD printing the film transparancies are then mounted on a frame which has a stretched silk across it. This is then exposed before being washed to reveal the negative of the film image on the silk screen.

The silk screen with the artwork image on is then mounted over the CD printing machine print bay.

The print machine loads each disc into a turntable and holds it in place by vacuum suction. This enables the CD to be held tightly without damaging the disc and a good registration to be achieved.

The turntable will rotate around so each CD is printed with one colour at a time by a rubber squeegee forcing ink through the silk screen onto the disc through the unexposed areas of the design. This creates a negative image of the screen on the disc surface resulting in an identical positive image to the original CD printing film.

The turntable rotates so that a UV Light cures the ink on the disc prior to the next colour being applied. This cycle repeats for each of the printing colours on the disc.

After CD Printing the discs are taken off the cd printing machine onto metal spindles in preparation for CD packaging.
