We’ve been doing more and more things without the stroller. The girls are very used to walking into places holding your hand, and they’re generally well behaved while doing it. It’s nice not to have to drag out the stroller for every stop we make. I made plans to meet up with a coworker at the zoo last weekend and decided to try it strollerless. The indoor trail that we’d likely go on is difficult with a stroller anyway, so I decided to go for it. It went really well! It was fun to watch the girls navigate their freedom, although most of it was navigated at a dead run.

The plan was to take the first monorail, but with all of the running, I wasn’t thrilled with the prospect of containing them for any length of time, so instead we hit the park. The last time I was at the zoo this park wasn’t finished. It’s so nice! I was worried the girls would be too young, but they did awesome. My coworker commented that my girls are very athletic. I hadn’t really thought about it, but they are. They run, they climb, they slide, they are all over the place.

Inventat de rusul Leon Theremin in 1919, tereminul este unul dintre primele sintetizatoare electronice.

Ce il face special este ca scoate sunete fara sa fie atins, mainile celui care il folosesc se misca intre cele doua antene. Astfel, controleaza frecventele si volumul pe care aparatul le emite.

Construit din două oscilatoare cu frecvenţe radio şi două antene metalice, funcţionează şi cântă singur la semnalele electrice produse prin mişcarea mâinilor artistului între cele două antene direcţionate spre difuzoare. Interpretul „atinge lumina şi ea cântă”. Tereminul e alimentat de la sursă electrică, iar sunetul se obţine din diferenţa de frecvenţă dintre două oscilatoare, unul cu frecvenţă fixată, celălalt cu frecvenţă variabilă. Instrumentul are două antene în raza cărora trec mâinile artistului cu mişcări de dirijor, care obţin înălţimea sunetului şi volumul. Benedict Popescu a luat contact cu tereminul în 1999, când a obţinut o bursă NATO în Anglia. Are deja înregistrate două CD-uri cu piese consacrate, româneşti şi străine, cântate la fierăstrău si la teremin.

Jobbet med cd-cover, logo og plakat for et band – jeg jobbet med artisten og bandet Johnny Kahlua og her er hele prosessen dokumentert.

Oppgaven

Steg 1 i arbeidet med denne oppgaven var å lese gjennom oppgaven slik at jeg til en viss grad vet hva jeg skal lage for artisten. 1 Logo, 1 cd-cover for en singel, 1 plakat, og et pdf dokument som forklarer de visuelle designelementene og hvordan de skal brukes (en designprofil). Det skal jobbes i CMYK og det er naturlig å jobbe i 300 dpi siden dette er elementer som er ment for trykk, det er likevel spesifisert at innlevering skal skje i JPG som er et tapsformat og vil ikke kunne lagres i samme størrelse som arbeidet gjøres i da det ville oversteget det maksimale lagringsområdet som er tilgjengelig for innlevering.

Artisten og møte nummer 1

Artisten jeg valgte ble valgt fordi jeg kjenner han fra før og det var raskt og enkelt å få kontakt med han, Johnny Kahlua er frontfigur i bandet med samme navn. Jeg fikk ikke ordnet møte med han før på Mandags kvelden noe som tok en bit av den tiden jeg hadde tilgjengelig, eneste jeg gjorde før møtet var å se på noen fonter og muligheter for logoen, jeg kikket og på hans tidligere album cover og andre artister med liknende lydbilde sine cover.

Jeg møtte Johnny etter øvingen til bandet på Mandagskveld og forklarte oppgaven for ham og at han skulle nå være min ”klient” og derfor og sette krav som om det var en slik situasjon og ikke bare en venn som hjelper en venn.

Det første vi snakket om var logo, jeg foreslo å bruke navnet med minimalt med andre elementer noe som han var enig i og han selv kom opp med en ide om å føye en bokstav fra hvert navn inn i hverandre, 2-3 kladder på dette ble skriblet ned før vi gikk videre.

Jeg spurte om det var en spesiell låt som han ville jeg skulle jobbe ut fra med tanke på singel cover, svaret her kom raskt og inkluderte et syn på hva han så for seg, låten ”Beneath the Sun” (tittelsporet på albumet med samme navn som ble sluppet for 2 uker siden). Her så Johnny for seg et spedbarn som ligger på en klippe over et hav i stekende sol, han ville at det skulle være en situasjon som fikk den som ser det (om det var virkelig) til å ville løpe å redde dette barnet, stikkord han selv brukte her var ”varmt” og jeg la til stikkordet ”forlatt” selv for å ha et par ord å gå uti fra oppå selve ideen.

Når det gjelder plakat ble vi enige om at vi ville gå for noe enkelt gjerne i svart/hvitt og plakaten skulle kunne med enkle endringer bli en standard plakat som kunne brukes til flere enn bare en konsert eller en type konsert.

Arbeidet med logo og cd-cover

Det aller første jeg gjorde når jeg kom i gang med arbeidet på tirsdag morgen var å opprette 2 illustrator filer for henholdsvis logo og cd-cover. Det neste jeg gjorde var å finne frem skribleriene fra møtet med artisten og så tegne for hånd noen skisser av coveret, samt spørre om råd fra andre om hvordan det ville se best ut.

For å ikke kjøre meg fast i cd-cover delen byttet jeg over til logoen innimellom, på den måten får ideer og tanker tid til å sorteres for den ene delen mens jeg jobber med den andre. Jeg så tilbake på skribleriet fra møtet og fant ut jeg ville prøve å la den fremre foten til ”h” i første navn fortsette ned for så å bli en del av ”h” i det andre navnet, jeg brukte dafont.com for å finne font, skrev inn navnet Johnny Kahlua i forhåndsvisnings boksen slik at alle fonters forhåndsvisninger ble vist med det navnet. Det endelige valget ble Bauserif som jeg syntes så bra ut uten noen endringer. Jeg satte opp tekst og føyet de to bokstavene sammen, videre eksperimenterte jeg med farger og ytter-linje. Etter andre møtet med artisten på Onsdagskvelden ble det bestemt at logoen skulle ha kun en fast farge og denne skulle helst være svart eller hvit alt etter bakgrunn.

Logoen ferdig:

cd-cover hadde jeg egentlig flere muligheter for å få til, men siden jeg liker å være opphavsmann for mest mulig av det jeg lager selv, så ble et rent foto vanskelig, fordi jeg da ville ha plassert et barn på en ren flate (studiobakgrunn) og tatt bilde, samt tatt et av en klippe sett mot havet for så å sette sammen disse i photoshop, jeg kjenner ingen som har barn i passelig alder og jeg trives heller ikke med å jobbe med barn, to grunner til at jeg dyttet denne metoden fra meg. (resultatet ville likevel vært interessant å sett).

Årsaken i forrige avsnitt er grunnen til at jeg valgte å lage det hele i vektor grafikk og tegne al sammen selv, Jeg tegnet en klippe, hav, himmel, sol og en ”bylt” som skulle se ut som en unge inntullet i et klede, dette resulterte i at det var vanskelig å se at det faktisk var et barn når jeg viste det til andre elever og lærer. Jeg fant derfor et bilde av en naken unge og tegnet med frihåndsverktøyet i illustrator denne ungen.

To versjoner av dette første utkastet med ”ny” unge ble laget, den som er vist nedenfor og en som var en god del lysere i fargenyansene, igjen viste jeg versjonene til andre og basert på stikkordet ”varmt” ble den lyse versjonen utpekt til å være den som gav mest inntrykk av varme og at ungen var i ”fare” og var forlatt.

Så den lyse versjonen ble foretrukket av de som så på denne, samt læreren kommenterte at lyset eller refleksjonen fra en sol vil alltid komme rett under solen, derfor ble og refleksjonen flyttet mer til venstre i de neste versjonene.

Jeg ble og gjort oppmerksom på verktøyet ”flaretool” i illustrator som jeg da brukte 3 ganger for å få til lyseffektene som jeg brukte på de neste versjonene. Her er resultatet etter tirsdag:

Dag 2 og jeg fikk vist arbeidet fra tirsdag til andre mennesker og en annen lærer, noe som gav andre meninger som gjorde at resultatet ble en god del bedre enn hva jeg hadde håpet, det ble forslått å bruke mønstre og bilder av for eksempel tapeter til å få til litt bevegelse eller mønster i bildet og også få det til å passe mer til Johnny sine tidligere cover, dette resulterte i at jeg fant noen stein/fjell teksturer som jeg brukte på klippen, en på det lyse området og en annen på skyggen. En på sola og en på den øvrige bakgrunnen, den på bakgrunnen fant jeg på en astrologi side og resultatet ble spennende syntes jeg, små justeringer og oppsett i InDesign ble resten av dagen bukt til før jeg viste resultatet til Johnny senere på kvelden (onsdag)

Her føler jeg at jeg må forklare coveret jeg har laget, jeg har laget coverdesign til en 80 mm cd plate (mini-cd) fordi det bare er 2 sanger på platen og det er ikke nødvendig med en vanlig cd, coveret er designet fro å trykkes på gjenvunnet papp. På bildene har jeg vist hvordan det skal se ut om det var et trykt produkt, cd’en er festen inni den 4 siders ”innlegget” og all plast har blitt overflødig, coveret lukkes med en konvolutt flipp fra forsiden som festes i en flik på baksiden (dette designet har en svakhet så det vil være bedre å feste med en liten borrelås i stedet for designet jeg har levert).

Artisten var strålende fornøyd og mente og at han nå måtte gi ut denne som fysisk utgivelse.

Plakat

Kunden Johnny Kahlua ville ha en enkel plakat som kunne brukes til mye og i svart/hvitt for å senke trykke prisen. Derfor lagde jeg til oppgaven en rask plakat med 3 deler, 1 del til logoen, 1 til bandbildet og den nedre delen til tekst om konserten eller hendelsen som er aktuell. Til oppgaven satte jeg og inn cd-coveret i plakaten. Resultatet:

Die Stärke des Buches macht aus, dass Lütz viele plastische Beispiele anbietet, um nackte Theorie mit Leben zu füllen. So verstehen Laien besser, was zum Beispiel Depressive von Manikern unterscheidet. Und wenn wir erfahren, wie eine Patientin einmal die Bundeswehr aufmischte, öffnet sich die Pforte zum Reich der netten Anekdote.

Amazon.de Zitat: Bei der neuen „Volkskrankheit“ Alzheimer konstatiert Lütz: „Wie eine Gesellschaft mit ihren Demenzkranken umgeht, das ist die Nagelprobe für ihre Menschlichkeit.“ Ergo ist die von Lütz angekündigte „heitere Seelekunde“ so lustig nun auch wieder nicht.

Tatsächlich fehlt es Lütz nicht am nötigen Ernst, wenn etwa dargelegt wird, wie wenig Wahlfreiheit Süchtige haben, was im Wahnsystem schizophrener Patienten passiert oder wann Psychopharmaka eine befreiende Wirkung entfalten. Zitatende.

Oliver Uschmann stellt fest: Männer sabotieren sich selbst. Das ist ab und an lustig, hier und da auch liebenswert, aber alles in allem meistens erbärmlich. Daher sollte man(n) sich befreien: Von Gewohnheiten, Denkweisen und Mechanismen, die ihn gefangen halten in einem Käfig, der nicht guttut, auch wenn er manchmal saubequem sein mag.

Das Buch und die Audio CD ist aber nicht nur ein “Männerratgeber”! Alle Frauen, die schon immer wissen wollten, wie Männer ticken, werden spätestens jetzt befähigt sein, sie besser zu verstehen und zu ergründen, warum und wieso sie so ticken, und wie sie darauf reagieren können…

A gravação aconteceu durante o congresso “Adorarei” promovido pela Igreja Batista Central da Barra (IBC Barra), da qual é membro. “Escolhi gravar na minha igreja para poder captar o ambiente da adoração, o que acontece já nos cultos de quarta-feira e de domingo, porque nada se compara a uma igreja adorando”, explicou.

Star Wars Movie Poster

Today there is only one first run movie theatre chain in the whole of Canada, so even the most successful movies only play for a matter of weeks.

But back in the 1970’s there was still competition among Canadian movie theatres so Star Wars actually played on Canadian movie screens for over a year. When the first Star Wars movie was released I was so caught up in it that I ended up going out to see it in a variety of movie theatres thirteen times during that first year.

I am a huge Star Wars fan.

I bought all the Star Wars merchandise that I could afford. In those days there were no DVDs or downloads. VCRs had just come on the market and they were prohibitively expensive.

So at first those of us who were not indescribably wealthy had to content ourselves with purchasing vinyl record albums that ran at 33 1/3rd rpm on an old fashioned machine called a record player. I bought the music in the form of the John Williams Star Wars soundtrack album, as well as a record called “The Story of Star Wars”, a synopsis of the story narrated by C3PO with audio clips from the film. To this day any time I hear the 20th Century Fox music tag I flash on the “real” Star Wars opening.

And today the George Lucas’s Star Wars empire continues to make money in new ways. I don’t have a problem with that. It is a business after all.

I still love Star Wars, particularly the first one. And this article in no way intends any disrespect. I’m telling you about my connection with Star Wars because the incredible success that Star Wars had makes it a good example. That, and because Star Wars was the very first videotape movie I saw played on a VCR in a private home.

What I really want to do today (besides procrastinate from working on my NaNoWriMo novel) is to look at personal use copying as a copyright infringement issue.

The Copyright Lobby makes no distinction between commercial bootleggers who distribute illegal copies for profit and legal purchasers who seek to make a back-up copy or digital format shift for personal use. Because they insist it is all the same thing, the Copyright Lobby has been pressuring governments the world over in an attempt to criminalize personal use copying.

I think there is a problem with the terminology here because calling both things by the same name is horribly misleading. Both activities involve digital copying, but that is where the similarity ends. Just as apples and oranges are both fruit but they are really not the same at all.

One thing the Copyright Lobby calls “piracy” would be more accurately called “Bootlegging”. Bootleg music recordings have been around as long as audio recording technology has existed. People have smuggled recording devices into concerts and made copies which they have then sold around the world. There have also been professional bootleggers who have copied recorded music and repackaged it to sell illegally. These activities have resulted in lost revenue for music distributors, and in fact should be illegal.

The other thing the Copyright Lobby calls “piracy” is what I call “Personal use copying”. This covers a much wider range of activities, but the chief defining factor of personal use copying is the fact that this digital copying is not for profit. Rather than resulting in lost revenue for distributors, personal use copying relieves the burden of format shifting from the manufacturer to the consumer. When shared through p2p networks personal use copying serves as a means of promoting these commercial products in the same way that radio and television broadcasts have done under the traditional business model. This type of copying should be legal.

The Copyright Lobby’s effort to criminalize this type of copying simply alienates the customer base. Like DRM or SOC methods, it does absolutely nothing to stem the flow of bootlegging.

When did the idea of ownership change?

It used to be that when you bought something you owned it. You were free to do with it what you liked. Even if it was something covered under copyright law… like a book, you were entitled to read that book as many times as you wanted to.

• You could loan it to a friend.
• You could quote from it in an essay
• You could read it aloud to your blind grandmother.

And at the end of the day it was still your book. Unless you decided you no longer wanted it, at which time you could legally sell it to a used book store.

Now lets look at what’s been happening so far in the information age. Manufacturers of recorded music and movies have their materials covered under copyright. They want us to not make copies for our own personal use, even though we have paid them the price they ask.

Personal use copying is not the same thing as bootlegging for commercial gain.

The Problem

If you purchased Star Wars in the Sony Betamax version back then, you would have found yourself out of luck a few short years later when Sony stopped making Betamax VCRs. When your Betamax machine became inoperable, you could no longer buy a new one, which of course rendered the tape you purchased in good faith unplayable. No one warned the unfortunate consumers that invested in Betamax tapes and Betamax equipment. I never heard of anyone getting refunds from the movie companies. Or the MPAA. Or Sony. Etc.

But.

Now you can’t. So what do you do if you really loved Star Wars?

You go out and buy it again. This time on VHS.

The rest of your life, eh? I know that’s what I thought. Didn’t you?

Did Twentieth Century Fox ever offer to reimburse you for the useless hunk of plastic and tape (that you have now purchased twice for your own use) that is now deteriorating? And suddenly it’s near impossible to buy a new VHS machine because there is yet another new technology– now movies are on DVD. Even if you can find a new VHS machine, we’ve all learned that a VCR will be lucky to last for five years anyway. And of course the VCRs you can find now are far more expensive than DVD players. So what’s a fan to do. Oh right.

You go out and buy Star Wars again on DVD.

[Of course, this particular example is extra irritating because George Lucas hasn't stopped tinkering with the thing, and since he's vowed to never release the REAL version (the one that actually played in theatres in 1977) on DVD, so I will never have the version I want no matter how many times I've paid for it. *sigh*]

But you’re a fan.

So you go out and buy the movie AGAIN on DVD.

At least you have it in a form that will last.

Now HD is gone too.

Or not.

Because then along came HD DVD.  The media manufacturers were a little surprised that we didn’t all rush out and buy HD machines.

Replacing our entire video library. AGAIN.

Oh… you were one of those suckers who got conned into converting to bought into HD? Ooooops!  Didn’t anyone tell you that the technology you were supposed to back was Blu-Ray?

I could go through the same process to look at the parallels in the music industry: piano rolls, gramophone cylinders, ’78’s, LPs, 8 track tapes, cassette tapes and CDS… all over the course of a single century.

Funny, I have a working gramophone older than I am which will play ’78’s. Yet our modern day electronic equipment will be doing well to work after a decade.

I don’t know about you but I am tired of buying the same movies over and over again.

Copyright is an agreement between the creator/manufacturer and the consumer.

The media distributors have NOT kept their part of the bargain, expecting consumers to pay for the same material over and over again. It should be legal to be able to watch the movie you have purchased in good faith as many times as we want to, for the rest of our lives.

Consumers have not been given any protection by governments the world over.

At the very minimum customers need to be given the right to copy the products they have purchased onto the piece of technology needed to play it.

We believe we own what we have purchased.
They want us to believe that we don’t.

Fortunately our government representatives are in an excellent position to look out for the Canadian consumer interests as they redraft our copyright law for the benefit of Canadians.

Doing a Google search for this band you will find out: how to sneak alcohol onto a cruise ship, what the drink “rum runner” is, and that a rum runner is someone who snuck alcohol into Canada during the 1900’s. Once you do find the band, you’ll find their poorly crafted, un-maintained website. This five-piece band, with a combined age of at least 150, seems less like a professional band and more like a group of guys with some talent, and a little extra cash to make a CD.

One nice feature of this CD is the drink suggestions. In the liner notes, each track has a different suggested drink. Including, champagne, a keg of Anchor Steam, and a lukewarm 40 oz of Olde English, Rum Runner definitely just wants to get you drunk (maybe they think it might make their record sound better).

Image aside, and focusing on the music, it’s a blend of punk and rock and roll, with a splash of folk and Celtic. Traditional tunes such as “The Leaving of Liverpool” and “You’re Gonna Need Somebody on Your Bond,” are classics that you’ll probably hear down at Irish Times.

The rest of the songs have a little more weight and power in them. Rum Runner immediately reminds me a little bit of Rancid, except without the whole hardcore punk rock edge. The title track, which should be accompanied with Monthelie, is a fairly standard song from a fairly standard band.

Rum Runner can be summed up just as that: a fairly standard Celtic/rock/folk band. You would be better off passing them up for a Rancid CD and a 40 of Olde English.

Saint Alvia is one of the first bands I’ve heard that combines the screaming element of bands like Alexisonfire but a funky almost ska element of Sublime, and at times sounding like the Offspring.

It’s upbeat, thumping beats and twang of the guitar of the title track get you into the music pretty quickly. The chorus of this song sums up the band fairly well: “You gotta read between the lines, if you wanna follow me/I lead these streets of mine, with four letter words and hollow deeds.”

The highly stylized sextet from Burlington, Ontario is currently touring Europe after a small set of dates with acoustic shows across Canada. One stop included Chinook Mall in Calgary. Why a band would ever want to play a mall is beyond me, but to each their own.

Saint Alvia is able to have a good mix of styles on Between the Lines. The track “Trouble Keeps Me Busy” is a slower, mellower tune, which is quickly followed by the upbeat “Romeo.”

Between the Lines is a well-rounded CD from a socially conscious band. They’re stylistic mix provides an enjoyable listen for the average music listener.

1 – Lover’s Lane

SUSAN Boyle has dedicated her record-breaking debut album to her mum – saying she promised her she would “do something” with her life.

I Dreamed a Dream hit the shops today, but had already broken the sales record for pre-orders on website Amazon.

With bookies refusing to take bets on the CD reaching the top spot in the album charts this week, the debut was a success before it even hit the shelves.

And SuBo makes several references to her mum on the cover sleeve, dedicating her most famous song I Dreamed a Dream to Bridget Boyle, who died in 2007 aged 91.

“This is for you”

She writes: “It (I Dreamed a Dream) is about a mother living in hard times.

“Very similar to my dream on a more personal level of my ‘life gone by’ with mum who died at the age of 91 and who’s ‘dream’ it was that I should ‘do something’ with my life.

“Mum this is for you.”

And elsewhere in the sleeve notes there is a picture of Susan with Bridget, along with the dedication.

It reads: “I would like to dedicate this album to my beloved mother, to whom I made a promise to ‘be someone’.”

Diversity

The 48-year-old has said before that every song featured on the album means something to her, and the lyrics are accompanied by an explanation.

These comments provide an insight into the singer, who has struggled to cope with her meteoric rise to fame since she appeared on Britain’s Got Talent in April.

After losing the final of the talent show to dance troupe Diversity, the singer was checked into the Priory suffering from exhaustion.

But the note about the hymn ‘Amazing Grace’ suggests that she had now come to terms with her new-found fame.

It reads: “About finding your way. Everything was new to me. I was scared, hope its better.

“I know it can be with your continued support which I find both touching and humbling.”

And she goes on to promise more than just a one-hit wonder as she writes about ‘The End of the World’: “Don’t be silly! It’s only the beginning!

“I want you to enjoy some more!”

With millions of copies of the album already sold in pre-orders, and millions more expected to fly off the shelves this week, it is anticipated that the star will still be in the number one spot at Christmas.

Bookies William Hill have put her as favourite for the festive top spot as some bookies refuse to accept bets.

And Margaret Mitchell, 69, from Edinburgh was one of the first fans to grab herself a copy in Edinburgh today (Mon).

“Just brilliant”

Out Christmas shopping with a friend, she had made the music shop her first stop to buy the CD.

She said: “I saw her on Sunday night on the X Factor and she was just brilliant.

“I’m a big fan and have been following her since she was on Britain’s Got Talent.

“She’s just so unusual and not what we were expecting. She’s just so good. I’m looking forward to hearing the album.”

Music store HMV have braced themselves for the rush to grab the singer’s album this week, expecting more than 300,000 copies to fly off the shelves.

“Biggest release of the year”

A spokeman for the company said: “Susan Boyle’s I Dreamed A Dream is set to become the biggest week-one album release of the year.

“Our online store, hmv.com, has received one of its largest-ever customer pre-orders for any album, whilst our high street stores around the country have been receiving numerous enquiries from fans for weeks now, especially those in her native Scotland.

“Based on this huge level of expected demand, which can only be boosted by SuBo’s much-anticipated X-Factor appearance this weekend, HMV predicts that the début album from the Britain’s Got Talent finalist will shift more than 300,000 copies in just six days – making it the biggest and fastest-selling week-one release of 2009.”

Fiz questão de comprar o CD! A Americanas.com estava com o preço mais barato: R$18,90. Tirando as músicas, que por si só são lindas, o projeto editorial do CD é fantástico: capa, gramatura do papel, detalhes em verniz. Tudo muito bem feito!
