A Town Mouse once visited a relative who lived in the country. For lunch the Country Mouse served wheat stalks, roots, and acorns, with a dash of cold water for drink. The Town Mouse ate very sparingly, nibbling a little of this and a little of that, and by her manner making it very plain that she ate the simple food only to be polite.

After the meal the friends had a long talk, or rather the Town Mouse talked about her life in the city while the Country Mouse listened. They then went to bed in a cozy nest in the hedgerow and slept in quiet and comfort until morning. In her sleep the Country

Mouse dreamed she was a Town Mouse with all the luxuries and delights of city life that her friend had described for her. So the next day when the Town Mouse asked the Country Mouse to go home with her to the city, she gladly said yes.

When they reached the mansion in which the Town Mouse lived, they found on the table in the dining room the leavings of a very fine banquet. There were sweetmeats and jellies, pastries, delicious cheeses, indeed, the most tempting foods that a Mouse can imagine. But just as the Country Mouse was about to nibble a dainty bit of pastry, she heard a Cat mew loudly and scratch at the door. In great fear the Mice scurried to a hiding place, where they lay quite still for a long time, hardly daring to breathe. When at last they ventured back to the feast, the door opened suddenly and in came the servants to clear the table, followed by the House Dog.

The Country Mouse stopped in the Town Mouse’s den only long enough to pick up her carpet bag and umbrella.

“You may have luxuries and dainties that I have not,” she said as she hurried away, “but I prefer my plain food and simple life in the country with the peace and security that go with it.”

I finally have a clean facility to work on making prints!!!! The facility is the printmaking lab in Claypool-Young building at Morehead State University. A little over a week or so has gone by, now I’m not going to show you the whole process, just a few things. IT IS A LONG PROCESS. I’m highly confident many of you would get bored. Before I get to that, do you remember about when I told you I sent out emails to artists that are well established to seek advice, worldly knowledge and etc.? I actually got a few replies! A lot of critiquing and what to expect on my future journeys. It has been relieve to hear the stories and to see the battle wounds they’ve collected throughout the years. I’m glad to note that their represents or at least shows a glimmer into their souls, hopes or dreams. Art is universal and a connection to those who lay upon its beauty. Okay, so I’ll do my best to post every couple of days, but most likely it’ll be weekly. I came down with a sickness Saturday, but I got to eat tons of dark chocolate so it wasn’t as bad… any who with the sickness. I don’t feel like doing much other then watching Futurama or My Fair Wedding with David Tutera (don’t judge me!) and doing the usual interwebs trolling. I randomly got the inspiration to make this post so, err, yay!

These are the 6×9 copper plates beside the sketches that are intended to be etched in the plate. I”m only going to show you the prepping of the plates. Stay tune for future how to’s and what I do!

I”m getting ready to polish the plates, it’s like polishing boots to get your reflection in them, basically. Yes, there is already a reflection in copper plates but you want to not look blurry.

Yay for finished polishing! Now I”m beveling the sides… which is a fancy way of saying I”m filing the sides to be a certain angle.

I tried to get close ups of the copper shavings that come off the plate, make sure they don’t get in your eyes or feet (if you are wearing sandals and/or flip flops)

This is after the beveling, polishing and smoothing out the edges. You clean the plate from all the oil and grease that you used. This stuff is whitening powder (water applied), very awesome stuff.

Make sure you put a protective backing on your plate or the acid will eat through the bottom of the plate!

Now I skipped (I actually forgot to take photos of this process) so here is what you’ll have before you start etching your plate.

Yeah, so next time in the future I’ll post the remaining step and the missing link I skipped in this one.

Until then watch this video over this amazingly awesome cat!

I’ve only had my website, re-edited Etsy, and facebook page for my artwork for only a little over a week now and I’m driving myself crazy for instant results. I’m not talking about money, yes it’s nice but I’m talking about people looking, commenting and being engaged, that’s all I really want… I want my art to be seen. I know it takes about six months to see any progress but with this country and culture, I’m accustomed to instant gratification. I want things to happen right now! I know it doesn’t work but it’s just odd so far… that’s all.

I’ve been bored since I’ve not been able to work on my printmaking.. so I’ve been doodling and sketching out of a lot of boredom. Mainly with watercolor and pen for the time being.

This is what I got with randomly adding watercolor on a page and then improvising lines with a pen. This actually came out pretty cool and it makes me want to create a comic using her as the main character.

This is a character of mine, her name is Miss Dollie. I’m attempting new techniques with watercolor. I’m satisfied I’ll be doing more soon.

This is a quick sketch (6mins or so) in graphite of my youngest niece.

I’m doing what I can…with this break. June 4th will be the day of progress and epicness! Until then just keep looking for these little fluff posts.

A Farmer was driving his wagon along a miry country road after a heavy rain. The horses could hardly drag the load through the deep mud, and at last came to a standstill when one of the wheels sank to the hub in a rut.

The farmer climbed down from his seat and stood beside the wagon looking at it but without making the least effort to get it out of the rut. All he did was to curse his bad luck and call loudly on Hercules to come to his aid. Then, it is said, Hercules really did appear, saying:

“Put your shoulder to the wheel, man, and urge on your horses. Do you think you can move the wagon by simply looking at it and whining about it? Hercules will not help unless you make some effort to help yourself.”

And when the farmer put his shoulder to the wheel and urged on the horses, the wagon moved very readily, and soon the Farmer was riding along in great content and with a good lesson learned.

ze WINNER!

I”m quite excited to start this piece…the only issue is that the facilities on campus are being cleaned..meaning I can’t start it until they finish which most likely will be June 4th! I’m quite the productive person so I”m going insane and trying to figure out on what to do… I’ve worked on my sketch for my class. I just need to start working on it but that area is the same facility. =_= (Failing at life). I’ve made today of playing a free RPG game, it’s pretty awesome, but even that didn’t help. I then register my domain for my site. You should totally check it out! (MY SITE!!:D) I have another possible commission to start soon so that’ll be exciting..but I’m living in the world on now.. I need something to do and I need to pay. Yes, yes I know I sound desperate but hear me out. I have bills, like everyone else and just like everyone else I have a few past bills (about three) that is being paid from current paid work. I love the thought of being able to do what I love I just want to do more of it! Selfish sounding I know, but isn’t that what all little girls and little boys want? (Yes, I’m little, I fit into this category). I want to be able to commit my whole time behind a desk doing paper (art)work! I’ll stop my ranting now… this summer I’m taking an Independent Art Study working on my Appalachian Folklore series (I haven’t thought of a cool hipster name yet). Here is the sketch for the first plate!

The sketch has the amazingly fantastic Appalachian Historian Ron Eller, website. His books are fantastic and well written with some good humor. The books are fairly unbiased, they are written for the reader to create their own implications. Eller just talks history (no pressure for over analyzing) You should check out the books they are really good. I prefer Uneven Ground over Miners, Millhands and Mountaineers.

I’ve been trying to figure out how to do some social networking without being “social” aka creeper networking. I’ve been taking my facebook page and liking other artisans and galleries that I think are pretty talented (in the hopes they’ll like me and my art OR start a conversation) I just started that today and not much (meaning anything) hasn’t happen but here is to the creeper networking theory! I’ve also been adding links to my blog of awesome artists, please check them out, they are amazing and fantastic. So far Etsy sales haven’t happened but I just recently started to get things rolling so hopefully I’ll see progress there soon. I’ll let you know.

I wanted to take this little time to tell you to check out this Lexington, Ky artist, his name is Rob Bridges and he does illustration (my favorite kind of art). He has a website, an etsy, and a facebook page.. I’m curious to know how well he is doing with networking… I guess I should ask him..email probably… anyway check out his beautiful art work.

Today has been a day of some productivity, mainly that of cleaning dishes and watering plants but it’s still productive! Okay, okay.. I know you’re thinking “where’s the art?’. It’s coming! Hold on to your pants/trousers/overall/skirts and/or panties. If you recall I told you about the recent commission I’ve been given? Yeah, it’s pretty good feeling to be paid for what I love I just need more people to do that… it’s been beneficial for bills and supplies!

Any who, I started on doodles last night (note the difference between doodles and Sketches).

These are the doodles:

and these are the sketches I made after creating the doodles.

There is a great difference in a doodle and a sketch! Now you know, and knowing is half the battle! I”m about to post them online (facebook) to see which is preferred by the lady paying me. I’ve not done a commission that isn’t just a portrait so I’m on a learning experience, and lucky individuals will be there on my journey!

My mind and my body often don’t see eye to eye. My mind thinks the more soccer games the better, while my body is a little less enthusiastic halfway through that second 90-minute soccer game in two days. My mind was convinced by the Chapmans to run the Army Ten Miler last year, while my body could only repeat TEN MILES?!? over and over in disbelief. My mind often thinks it’s a good idea to stay up until 3 a.m. for no good reason, while my body is less than amused at work the next day.

This weekend their feud came to a head. By the end, my body was pretty much ready to ditch my mind and try being a vegetable for a while. It started with the fact that throughout the spring I have one soccer game on Saturday morning and one on Sunday morning every weekend. This weekend we happened to have few or no subs for both games and I ended up playing the entire 90 minutes of both games in the midfield, a position that requires you to constantly run up with the offense and back with the defense.

Enter Living Social. A few weeks back they were offering 65% off of a day of paintball for three. Since that’s something I’ve always wanted to try, I bought the deal and enlisted two of my soccer teammates to join me. But the only day we could all do it was immediately following our soccer game on May 19. Okay, fine. Two soccer games and a few hours of paintball, that was doable for one weekend, right?

Okay, a bright white shirt with pictures of babies might not have been the best of wardrobe choices.

Enter the Warrior Dash. Cecily and I have been planning on doing this epic race for several months. I knew it was some weekend in May, but I never really took the time to clarify which one. Until about a week ago. I also realized that since we had signed up for the 3 p.m. wave, I would have plenty of time to play my soccer game at 10 a.m. before having to leave for the Warrior Dash. Plenty of time, not a lot of common sense.

Of course who said the Warrior Dash has anything to do with common sense?

My mind declared the weekend a great success. I played some great soccer, had a blast getting nailed by some paintballs, and jumped over fire dressed as a somewhat blind Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtle.

My body is still looking into emancipation options.

For years I have been trying to convince my sister to have a blog. I have never known any one who sh

For years I have been trying to convince my sister to have a blog. I have never known any one who should have one more than her. I mean, before she lived with her husband and two kids on a sailboat, she was a missionary nurse in Honduras. Before that, she trained for and completed an Ironman (in which she swam 2.4 miles in the ocean, biked 112 miles and then ran a MARATHON all in a row). Before that, she spent 11 months backpacking around the world by herself, which included skydiving, running a marathon, climbing a glacier, getting several scuba diving certifications, going on a safari, and so, so much more.

For a writer, watching that much potential content go to waste is like a very slow torture. Don’t get me wrong, I love my life and I love my blog. I would not choose to live my sister’s life anymore than she would choose to live mine. But oftentimes the frequency in which I want to write is greater than the frequency in which I have something to write about. If I devote a fair amount of time to crafting something just right, I can usually make my blog worth reading (at least I hope so). But for my sister, all she has to do is go about her day.

So when the Sis told me a local Charleston TV station was going to be interviewing her about the Iron-Willed Buccaneer’s birth at sea, I made the pitch one more time. And she went for it!!! Not wanting to waste the moment, I brainstormed some blog names with her and Cecily right away. When we found one we all liked, I promised the Sis that if she gave out that address to the TV crew, there would be a blog set up there by the time the story ran that night. It was crunch time, blogger-geek style, and I was loving it! Cecily worked her design magic with the header, I created a WordPress site, bought the domain, set up some widgets and BOOM! A blog was born: ohtheplaceswevebeen.com

Later I helped the Sis get her first post up just in time for the news story that linked to her brand new blog. The next day it got 10x more hits than my blog’s best day ever. And it was AMAZING!!!!!

Now I am officially obsessed – there’s even a Facebook page. And my poor sister. Basically I am the world’s biggest slave driver. Nevermind that the baby needs fed and the one-year-old doesn’t want to nap and the diapers need to be washed – there are posts to be written! Comments to be answered! Interviews to be conducted! I wouldn’t be surprised if she wants to strangle me by the time I’m supposed to see her in person next weekend.

This is all just a long-winded way of saying that you should go to the Sis’s blog (ohtheplaceswevebeen.com). Do it right now. Maybe even hit that follow button on the right hand side. I realize my saying that is a lot like the chess club president trying to help the quarterback make more friends, but there it is. Enjoy!

Cecily’s last day was Friday, and she will be sorely missed. For the past two and a half years

Cecily’s last day was Friday, and she will be sorely missed. For the past two and a half years, she has worked at the Starbuck’s in my office building and she has been my barista. Our encounters have been limited to the five to ten minutes it takes to place my order every morning for a grande red-eye, but in that brief amount of time, Cecily has become an integral part of my day. And it’s not just because the minute she sees me come in, she calls out “shot for coffee,” and my red-eye is waiting for me by the time I reach the cash register. It’s how she interacts with me and everyone else who walks into that particular Starbucks.

Cecily has this beautiful megawatt smile that no matter how you’re feeling makes you instantly feel better. It’s how she greets everyone who walks into the door and makes you feel that she’s been waiting just for you. She knows all the regulars by name, and they know her. She’s the type of person who makes your day better, who helps lift the day’s burden a bit. No matter what kind of day I’ve already had — how rushed I’ve been that morning — or what kind of day I’m about to face, I always leave Starbucks with my red-eye in hand and my spirits lifted because of her. That’s quite an achievement, I think.

And it makes me think about my own interactions with the people I encounter throughout the day — no matter how briefly. Do I encourage them with a smile, or do I make them wonder who that crabby woman is rushing by? Do I make people’s days a bit brighter because they interacted with me, or would they rather avoid me the next time they see me coming? To be honest, it’s probably a little bit of both.

People like Cecily help me remember that it’s the small kindnesses that help someone get through the day. It’s letting that person get on the train first; offering to help when the opportunity arises
; greeting others with a smile. It’s the small things that might just encourage someone else, lift their burdens, and help them make it through the day.

And that’s not a bad way to live each day. Right, Cecily?

This Tactics Ogre post is brought to you by Sweet Lady.

First things first, here’s the short little video for the Chapter 2 (lawful) intro. Well, there’s a ton after the video, but you’ll know when the intro ends.

I’ve gone from Hero to Butcher.

I check the Warren Report regularly, and after I read this news item, another place to go showed up on the map. It pays to pay attention to these things.

Check out the branching path in the bottom left corner. I imagine with the WORLD system eventually you can fill out the entire thing. Genius.

This is the boss of the map I just killed. Even the minor characters have a history.

Denim and crew roll in to save the day, and she tells us this. Which is to say, she’ll fight the enemy until they’re not in range, then she’ll fight me.

This will become important for Denim as well.

That enemy Cleric is quite… effulgent.

I’ve saved her, but she doesn’t join me. Still, she’s alive, and where there’s life there’s hope.

I really love giving other people gifts that can double as gifts for myself. I did it last Christmas

I really love giving other people gifts that can double as gifts for myself. I did it last Christmas with that ping pong table for the Chapmans, and now I have done it with The Flying Crane’s birthday present.

She has wanted a s’more making kit ever since our Christmas party when someone else got the one I brought for the gift exchange. So finally I got her a really simple one that includes a can of sterno, a grill encasement so we don’t burn our fingers off, and four fake sticks to stab the marshmallows with. She kindly volunteered to wait until I got back to try it out, so last night we finally fired it up.

I was super impressed by the speed at which our marshmallows cooked on that little thing. As my Dad would say, for people who don’t have the luxury of living in the country it wasn’t half bad.

I also very much enjoyed the fact that the sterno was neon purple.

The kit turned out to be a huge success and I even brought it over to Cecily’s tonight to spread the joy. Although I did have to explain to her what a weenie roast was. Apparently that’s a Midwest/small town/country thing.

My favorite moment was definitely late this morning when I was chatting with The Flying Crane and she admitted to having two s’mores for breakfast. Apparently the fact that they made a delicious breakfast is problematic for her. I don’t really see the issue.

Saturday was a milestone birthday for my Dad and that combined with the fact that I haven’t be

Saturday was a milestone birthday for my Dad and that combined with the fact that I haven’t been to my hometown in over a year meant it was time for a visit. Right before I left for a long weekend back in the Midwest, Cecily told me to take lots of pictures. This is her usual request before someone goes on a trip, but this time I had to point out the lack of photo opportunities where I would be going. Since I’m always saying how different it is in DC compared to where I grew up, she challenged me to capture Life in a Small Town. I’m not sure if I managed that, but I did at least get My Weekend Spent in a Small Town. But first, I wanted to share a few things I couldn’t capture with my camera:

The GORGEOUS night sky I was hit over the head with as soon as I got out of the car at my parent’s house. So big, so blue, with so many stars shining so bright and nothing getting in the way of the view.

The awesome local doctor who squeezed me in on the only weekday I was in town so I could order some inserts that my poor pained feet desperately need.

The abundance of parking and the lack of any need for payment for said parking.

How famous my Dad is.

Did I mention he was turning 65? Cause I might have told everyone we met. With baby faces like ours, it’s important to clarify these things. Every five years or so he re-defines my definition of what is old. And not just because of his looks.

Dancing Chickens, a family favorite involving grilling chickens with beer cans stuck up their innards, were on the menu for the party we went to at his office. And no Cecily, it doesn’t make the chicken taste like beer.

The next day on the way to one of my favorite local restaurants, I managed to capture a scene that could only be found in a small town:

This place is trying to pass itself off as “Dunn’s Sporting Goods”. But the lineup of animals waiting to be shot combined with a parking lot that has more pickup trucks than some car dealerships make it clear it should be called “Dunn’s Guns”. It was the last weekend of turkey season after all.

The next stop after lunch was the drive-thru liquor store:

Then it was on to our next party. Dad was in the high school class of ’65 and since they are all turning 65, they decided to have a class birthday party. It was even more fitting that they happened to be having it on Dad’s actual 65th birthday. If you’ve never crashed the birthday party of two dozen 65-year-olds, you should really try it some Saturday night.

The next day I got to see three of my nieces and nephews for the first time in over a year. I really need to never let it be that long between visits again. While the boys fished…

We girls channeled our inner Girl Scout to make bird feeders out of pine cones and peanut butter!!

Then I channeled my non-existent inner tree-hugger to hang the feeders:

Later we enjoyed another great part about living out in the country: a walk in the woods! Warning: if any of you city people have a fear of trees or wooded areas, you may want to avert your eyes from the next few photos.

The last but definitely not least in my captured moments of small town life came during a conversation Mom and I had on the way to the airport.

Mom: There’s actually a lot of traffic this morning.
I take out my camera and take a photo.
Mom: What did you just do?
Me: Take a picture of the road.
Mom: You’re going to show this to people and tell them this is your Mom’s definition of a lot of traffic, aren’t you?
Me: Yep.

I haven’t blogged in over a week!! I hope you all have been coping somehow. Just so you can be assured I haven’t forgotten my addiction to taking photos of food, I will share this shot of the dinner I made for Cecily and myself tonight:

It turns out dino nuggets and smiley fries are both supposed to be cooked at 425 for 15 minutes. It’s like they were made for each other. I picked them up tonight at Harris Teeter and yes, the cashier did ask if the food was for me. She was totally jealous.

Cecily and I both had very happy (a.k.a. empty) plates at the end of the evening.

One year ago today, in an effort to blog more (and because I was totally stealing Cecily‘s idea), I decided to post a photo to my blog once a day for a year. It was a spur of the moment decision, but I figured I had plenty of ideas. Then I hit week 2.

It was a beautiful idea to freeze the average moments of my daily life for a year. It inspired me to take more photos. It kept me committed to posting to my blog. It helped me tell stories.

It was HARD.

But I did it. Today I will post my last Daily Photo, 366 days later. It’s not of anything special, but then most of them weren’t. It’s just a random shot of the street that I took while I was talking to my Mom on the phone during my walk home. And stop worrying Mom, I totally looked both ways before stopping in the middle of the road.

I know it doesn’t seem like anything, but I have been staring at a whole path of this spray paint for months. It’s a little faded now and I have no idea what it’s actually for, but every single time I see it, I think of Star Wars. Just in case you’re not following that completely logical leap, this is what I’m talking about:

Still not seeing it? Don’t worry no one else is either. But that’s okay. If I didn’t have a strange mind I would have run out of blog material months ago.

Luckily Cecily and I have switched our weekly dinners to Tuesday nights so I had her on hand to make it look good. This meant I could sit back and relax while she worked her magic (a.k.a. did all the work).

And no, that’s no mistake in this version of The Starry Night. It’s just The Flying Crane and me being our geeky sci-fi selves. We’re kind of awesome that way.

On the last Wednesday in March of 2011, I went to the first practice of a brand new soccer team. There I met a ton of people, including this girl named Cecily. It was only a couple of days later, when we realized she was starting at the same tiny company I already worked for, that it became clear we were destined for something greater than just teammates.

One year later and we just happened to be at that same field for another soccer practice. People think we’re kidding when we say we share a brain, until they spend more than five minutes with us. I mean, just look at the soccer balls we happened to buy:

The world is indeed small, and every once in a while it throws you something amazing when you’re least expecting it. Happy anniversary Cec, I can’t believe it’s only been a year!

(In order of appearance)

A great first outdoor soccer game of the season? Check.

Amazing friends? Check.

Delicious pizza? Check.

Crushing everyone in ping pong? Check. (Okay, crushing might be stretching it when it comes to Cecily – she’s got a nasty return!)

Large piece of “Chocolate Ping Pong Birthday Cake”? Check.

Maintaining my hard core rep by subbing back into my hockey game after I took at stick to the big toe that bent my nail in half? Check.

Although I will admit that dealing with the remains of my folded-into-itself nail after the fact was the less fun part. But all in all a fantastic day – thanks to everyone who made it so!
