Impressions: This was a very smooth dry, red wine. The first thing that hits your mouth is a light-to-medium tannin, drying your tongue, followed by smooth, dark fruits (grape). A buttery smooth finish to the medium bodied wine.

ABV: 13.5%

Score: 8.5 / 10 (Very Excellent)

Verdict: Another easy drinking red wine. Quite a bit more tannin than other reds I’ve reviewed, but well within the acceptable limits of ‘easy drinking’. Medium bodied with the usual ‘dark fruits’ (ie. grape), but with minimal bitterness or strong after taste that often follows dry wines. At only £5, definitely good value and worth a try.

Took my lovely wife to lunch this afternoon to the Marco Trattoria Restaurant and could not pass up the opportunity to capture one from the wine cellar!

There are two main reasons for this, firstly demand is at such a peak that aged stock is being squeezed out of every distilleries warehousing and if you happen to have an age statement on your label, then you are stuck with only putting stock of that age (or greater) in your bottle. Simple way around this is of course to remove the age statement and release your brand under a catchy name with a back story about flavour rather than age such as Talisker Storm or Macallan Gold. As long as you haven’t messed around with the original character of the spirit, I think this is a fine idea and also shows the consumer is starting to understand that oldest does not always mean best.

Secondly, there are a lot of new distilleries out there, just releasing their product to the market and do not have the luxury vast stock with good age to drawn from but still need to make a bob or two in the meantime. We saw this with The English Whisky Co and their “Chapter releases” which cleverly gave the consumer the opportunity to sample the spirit as it aged towards the magical 3 years and 1 day before it could be called whisky. This helped not only establish the distillery but create a following which turned this new venture into almost cult status which continues today. I reviewed the Private Cellar selection previously which has some creative finishes. On the flip side, Glenglassaugh distillery had a very different problem which lead to them releasing new make spirit. As a mothballed distillery reopened, all they had available to them was very old stock. Not ideal to release your first malt after many years and slam a £300 price tag on it. So it was new make to the rescue again, this time under the name “The spirit that blushes to say its name” thankfully re-branded and still available from the distillery such as its popularity.

But it was whilst chatting with the guys from Glen Moray distillery  as they introduced to me the new peated spirit release that I became rather curious. Glen Moray is not a new distillery and has plenty stock, so to venture down the road of underage whisky shows keenness to develop and innovate, not just stick with what you know. The distillery, in the town of Elgin on the banks of the Moray Firth has been in production since 1897 although it was a brewery prior to a distillery so alcohol of one form or another has been associated with the site for longer.

Presented in a square 20cl bottle and sealed with a white wax dipped top the pale product with designed font is certainly a far cry from the design of the traditional Glen Moray releases and again shows that this is something that a lot of time and effort has gone into. It’s the first time the distillery have chosen to release a peated spirit and I liked the look of it a lot, but how did it taste?

Appearance: Pale straw with hints of gold

Nose: A balanced nose of soft smouldering highland peat and fresher coastal/mineral notes which develops sweet lime citrus and fresh-cut straw. The above all seem to draw together to create a farmyard note. With water, deeper notes of fresh leather and artists oil paint are added.

Palate: Bursting sweet heat (that will be the 60.6%) rich vanilla and sweet peat smoke with just enough salty edge to cleanse the palate before becoming too overpowering. With water, the heat clams to allow the sweetness of red berry, lime marmalade and mocha coffee. The ever-present vanilla holds it all together with the peat smoke really adding to this young but elegant spirit.

Finish: Vanilla syrup mocha coffee and a white chocolate and cranberry muffin (slightly charred) on the side.

Summary: Approaching young spirit is always usually a challenge as it can be tough to see through the energetic alcohol and get to the core of what the spirit is trying to say, but this was a delight. Rich, rounded and delivered a great character. I’m not entirely sure what Glen Moray have planned for this, but it’s spot on as it is with a clear indication that it will only get better with age. But let’s hope they always keep this younger expression available.

Recently, with the invaluable assistance of my friend Natalie Murphy, the well-known Bridgend Historian, arrangements were made to visit the site and record photographically as much as we were able. We had learned beforehand that the Post Office building itself was unsafe and access would be denied but the old “Fire Station” would be made available to us. So with eager anticipation our small party consisting of Natalie, myself and Colin Simper, a friend of ours, waited at the gates for our guide to arrive.

We were led straight into the upper floor of the old sorting office which is above what was referred to as the fire station. It was apparent immediately that this was no abandoned building as the walls were freshly painted and neat piles of building materials were tidily stored within. Photographically not very exciting but we were informed the lower levels were more as original.

The climb down the narrow spiral staircase was a bit of a challenge with an extended tripod and large camera bag but once down one could peer into the gloom and realise the vastness of the interior which is not apparent from the insignificant looking exterior doors. Once again, the area is being used for storage of building materials with piles of dressed stone and other items dotted around the interior. I set to work with the tripod and camera and captured a number of images then heard the word cellar being mentioned – yes, we could go down there but it was flooded.

Fortunately I had expected to be working partly in darkness so had taken along my LED lanterns and went down to investigate, water was covering the floor but only a centimetre or two so it was quite easy to step carefully through the water. It was pitch black down there and the lanterns provided the only illumination. There was a large raised concrete base in the centre where it is assumed a generator once stood.

Although the building off Derwen Road is known locally as the “Old Fire Station” I can find no reference to it being built for this purpose. According to the publication “Bridgend 900″ it was built for the Post Office and I quote: “1936 – A new garage for the Post Office was erected in Derwen Road. As a Crown Building it bears on its facade the royal cypher E.VIII.R and is unique in England and Wales as one completed during the short reign of the uncrowned King Edward VIII. The only other such building is known in Scotland”.
No mention of a fire station!

Now it is just possible that this publication is incorrect but more likely that this building was indeed constructed specifically for the Post Office. It has been suggested perhaps that it was used briefly during the war years to house a fire engine but can find no evidence to support this apart from a map dated 1940 which shows this building as a fire station. It remains a fact however that this building is still locally known as “The Old Fire Station” and still has a bell on its exterior wall which would seem to suggest it had been used for this purpose. Photographic evidence also exists which shows the fire station in Glanogwr Road was in use at that time in 1936 and that location remained the operational base until the 1960s when a new station was built on Angel Street.

The final photograph shows the spiral chute which is presumably to transfer mail bags from the upper floor to waiting vans below. The illuminated sign in the background ‘Beware of Motors’ used to hang on the wall outside the garage. Some tasteless deep blue bathroom ware in storage here now.

Foolishly I didn’t photograph the exterior when we visited as we had accessed the building from the rear, but you can view on Google streetview by following this link.

It had been a hot summer day.  One of those days in Iowa when the thermometer is pushing toward 100 degrees and humidity is not far behind.  The kind of day when my grandfather would say, “Listen carefully and you’ll hear the corn growing.”

At this time, my twin sisters were babies.  Dad was working at Storm Lake that day helping put out their paper.  During World War II there was a shortage of manpower here on the home front, and men helped wherever and whenever they were needed.

The hot, muggy day suddenly got cool.  Black clouds rolled over us turning the midday sunshine to dark night.  The wind began building.  Mom knew something bad was going to happen.  She grabbed Jo while telling me to get Jean, and we all  headed for the cellar.

No sooner did we get to the bottom of the stairs than the electricity went off.  We were sitting in the darkest dark you can imagine.  There were no windows down in the cellar.  Only a huge coal burning furnace and the washing machine.  The floor and walls were dirt except for the small wooden floor in the laundry area.  When the one light bulb hanging from the ceiling went off, you experienced total darkness.

A roaring sound could be heard in the distance.  The roaring was getting louder and louder.  We knew it was getting closer and closer.  It sounded like a freight train was coming through the house.  As the sound reached its crescendo, the sound of pounding and glass breaking was added to the roaring train.

As suddenly as the sound had reached its peak, it stopped.  There was not a sound.  After a couple of minutes, Mom announced that it was over.  She ordered me to stay with the babies on the bottom step while she checked it out.

I could hear her feeling her way slowly up the stairs.  At last she opened the door and light flooded the stairway.  Her first reaction was a gasp.  She then told me to wait while she cleared a way for me and the twins.

The scene when I finally emerged from the basement was chaos.   Hailstones the size of baseballs had been battering the house and were strewn all over the floor.  Both windows on the south side had been broken.  The curtains had been torn away.  Glass was scattered everywhere.  The rain that had been driven through the broken windows had soaked everything. The rugs squished under our feet as we walked on them.  As Mom surveyed the damage, I’m sure she was grateful we were all safe.  There was a lot of broken glass and water to clean up, but the house had survived.

Looking outside I saw a scene you would like for Christmas.  The ground was white, but it was not with snow.  The large hailstones were covering the ground, roads, and sidewalks.

About the same time I got upstairs with my sisters, Aunt LaVerne and Uncle Bill from next door came in along with cousins Pat, Ron, and Bill.   They were checking on us and pitched right in helping with the twins and the clean-up.   I’m sure they were more concerned about the babies than the babies’ brother.  It was still a comfort to know there were people who loved us, and were concerned for our safety.

The garden  we depended on for fresh vegetables was totally destroyed.  The not yet ripe watermelons were broken open.   Dad’s chickens ventured out of their shed and began devouring the melons.  They all died within a couple of days.  We blamed the green watermelons for their demise.

That’s the way it was in Early.  When there was a storm, you hunkered down, and when it had passed you helped each other clean up.  For a little boy, it was exciting and fun to have everyone pitching in and getting us through what might have been tough times.

Whatever will they think of next? I came across this Guardian article explaining how some of the rich list spend their money on their homes. As it is too much of a planning minefield to extend their homes on the surface they have decided to start excavating under their own feet. These have been tagged as iceberg homes, which I feel is a most appropriate name. Forget the wine cellar and think ballrooms, cinemas and swimming pools. I can’t help but think of the lack of sunlight and possibly oxygen.

There was commotion within the First House after the surprise distress call right in the middle of the night…

He sat at the edge of the bed, half-dressed, staring at the dresser, his teary eyes staring forth, robbed of all expression…

“Nothing, really. I just think some handshakes are longer rather more personal than others. So are some stares…Oh! There it goes again the river!” …

It was dawning on us with incredible detail, the First Room, the nerve centre of the Nation’s moral decorum was playing host to an unusual guest this eventful evening.

At my counterpart’s knowing nod, the four of us hurriedly streamed out of the room. Memories of the intrigues inside the ball room that curious summer evening two years earlier were still vividly replaying in my mind. I recalled how he, clad in his dark shiny black three-piece had cracked my ribs with thrilling forecasts on future civilizations under the reign of this species-a fusion between a superior gene of the Dryopithecus and an extraterrestrial organism from a yet to be discovered planet that would be the marvel of the astronomical sphere. This race would sparkle as epitome of all intelligence. As a chemical warfare resistant breed, it would apparently spearhead the ultimate conquest in space travel in formidable revolution. Reminiscing his account driven home with such incredible gusto; his eyes tucked under the dark sleek night vision goggles triggered a chuckle from deep within my bowels.

Still, there had been many curious hide and seek aspects that had remained unresolved in my mind. The distinct throbbing river that seemingly kept growing in intensity had for instance dominated the content of our discussion that evening. Then there had of course been that distinct moment of personal handshakes, which seemed to strike a chord within me as well, probably the sole moment the two of us had operated on the same plane that evening. Something told me it had raised more than four eyebrows within the room that night.

I paused as a flashback of my colleague and I storming inside the bedroom hit me hard. There he was, rolling rapidly on the floor before me, then the blurred image as she swiftly pulled some bedding over herself. I found myself increasingly fighting a growing intensity within me recalling the scene around the military officials flanked by their spouses on the evening of the coveted annual ball hosted by the C in C.

“You see!” Pointed my counterpart emphatically as we casually made our way down to the cellar, his pointed leather shoes an amplification of his characteristic comical self.

“It is always a matter of time. There is no problem with the point of contact because that’s a democratic right reserved for sight. She can be excused if and when she progresses to take one. Muster the state of affairs in stimuli while you still can for at take two, things are accelerating the wrong direction past the point of no return. Just remember, at peak, nothing will stand on its way…the mighty sweep of the river; its damage colossal, scope collateral.

Quabbin Quarry got its name due to the abundance of gravel and sand and timber that get dumped in this area as some kind of work gets done in and around Quabbin. One of my favorite Comedians, Brian Regan, once said, “A kid can make a toy out of anything.” Though an Entertainer, his words bring insightful wisdom and truth. Here at Gate 41, nothing more than a dumping ground for landscape construction, has become one of my children’s favorite spots in the entire Quabbin Reservoir.

Gate 41 is located on Route 32A in Petersham. It is the last gate you will encounter before entering Hardwick if traveling south along this road. Likewise, if traveling north along Route 32A, once you pass Gate 42, you will enter Petersham from Hardwick and then almost immediately encounter Gate 41 on your left.

Gate 41 has sufficient parking considering I have never been there while someone else is there. However the parking lot could probably fit 4 or 5 cars safely and without interfering with one’s ability to enter or exit. This location also has its textbook unique attribute I like to offer in as many entries as I can by declaring that it is the shortest walk from where you park to where you will see water NOT considered to be Quabbin water. Gate 41 leads directly to Pottapaug Pond, (which is fed by the East Branch of The Swift River).

Walking through the gate allows an immediate view to the left of a wide, nearly stagnant stream that feeds into a bog; the road bending slightly to the left. This bog apparently belonged to someone who lived along this road and was self-employed by use of this bog as a fish-hatchery. In fact, the owner was the last remaining resident of what is now the Quabbin Reservoir after a bitter battle over his Property Rights and loss of his business income.

To the right side of the road is significant and obvious evidence of the residual home and hatchery where he once lived and worked, today littered with old beer bottles and other debris. The Compound, as I call it, is extensive. It even appears as though there was more than just one family living in the area. There are 3 separate sites within this short walk that are unique to others throughout the Quabbin.

First I encountered a standard cellar hole with trash in it, though slightly more trash than I would normally see, probably due to its close proximity to the parking area, but with the seclusion of a deeply entrenched location so as to not be seen from the main road. This first cellar hole was accompanied by a concrete wall, perpendicular to the cellar. It also had an old chimney probably once used in conjunction with a kitchen stove, but lying precariously low to the ground.

Another site, closer to the main road, is one of my favorite cellar holes. Seeing it from far away would not yield any of the normal indicators of a cellar hole. As most cellar holes are slightly elevated over their surrounding grounds as well as on some kind of high ground, this cellar hole is positioned slightly negative-flush of its surroundings and at the lower edge of a slight slope. This would not be considered the best location for a cellar due to drainage, but this cellar defies all conventional logic. It appears to be more of a well-preserved cache without its roof cover. In spite of its location toward the bottom of a slope, it is remarkably well preserved, as if water has had little or no effect on it ever.

The final site, located on the other side of the first one mentioned, furthest from the main road, is quite an extensive building. It might be the largest cellar hole I have seen yet in the entire Quabbin, which is not to say it is, in fact, the largest, but the largest I have seen out of the 100 or so that I have seen. This is obviously where the residing gentleman housed and worked in his hatchery, as extensive as it is, and judging by its general location to the end of the fishery across the street.

Beyond the hatchery is an open field to the right, the end of the bog to the left. Where the bog meets the culvert to the open field on the right is a persistent beaver dam that has been there for many years.

At this transparent overpass you may go straight to Pottapaug Pond, or fork right to the quarry, both within sight of this divergence. Recently, the straightaway to the water has been cleared, but prior to that it was blocked for some time by a fallen tree and other vegetative debris. Now it serves as a shaded walk to the water, generated by a thick canopy and leading to a fantastic view of Pottapaug Pond.

If you go right, there will be a small stream to the left heading into Pottapaug, and your frontal view will produce an image of magnificent proportions. Children and adults alike will be in awe of this massive sight; a cliff on a steep grade that is barely safe to climb on its face. My daughter did so when she was 10, but barely able by herself and she wasn’t tall enough to finish the job once at the top. The only reason it becomes impossible is because there is a 90˚ rise once you reach the top of the grade that is easily 5-6’ high. The unstable soil makes it unsafe to even try.

Walking through this pathway tempts you to shoot left onto the berm so you can capture a teasing sample of the water. Emerging from the crown of trees is “something else!” Something else –literally- almost every time you visit. Quabbin Quarry is one the most dynamic site in the Quabbin (another interesting fact)! Because of the deposit and retrieval cycles, it can look different every time you visit. One day there’s a pile of gravel as you enter, the next time you visit, there are 3 new, larger piles, while that one you saw the last time has completely vanished! It’s never-ending fun for kids because they love climbing these mammoth hills and although they can do so safely, I would never advocate for ANY child to do so and offer a disclaimer that parents should make their own responsible choices. Furthermore, BEWARE OF TICKS!

The one consistent landmark of this site is the large hill at your forward position upon entering; the one that’s probably too high and steep for most kids. You can, however, get to the top of it more safely if you traverse along the berm to the left and walk the ridge and around to the top.

Atop these ridges you may also catch glimpses of the water and the open field to the right of the road through which you entered Gate 41. If you manage to safely navigate on top of the mammoth hill, you can walk along its heightened path into the hilltop peninsula that juts out into Pottapaug, allowing a peripheral view of this pond through a dense pine forest.

For adults, this venue is maybe a ½ hour hike in and out if you stuck to roads and trails and didn’t want to stop to take pictures. You could spend all day if you wanted to pause for serene enjoyment or break brush to get to other spots in the immediate area, such as the trail to Gate 42 and southward. However the location itself is a lot more fun for kids 3+ (with careful parental supervision pertinent to exact age) than it is for adults to explore. Still, it’s a spot my kids ask about frequently, so this adult gives it 3-Stars!

An old tree. I’m a fan of Quabbin trees. Their condition is usually an indicator of how frequently visited a site is. They also offer some unique bends and shapes. I could dedicate an entire page to Quabbin trees.
