It’s all happening for our Miss 10. A couple of weekends ago she had her first WAYMA audition. Today is her first AMEB cello exam.

It’s really quite hard! She’s struggled to get her head around the different scales, harmonic and melodic minors as well as get all the exercises and pieces up to exam standard. Her hands and fingers are still relatively tiny so shifting and extensions are even harder on the cello. And there’s so much exam work that to get through that it takes over an hour to get through it in a practice session!

But the hardest thing I’ve noticed is trying to get her to not stop playing when she makes mistakes. When she makes a mistake, Miss 10 will repeat the couple of notes again. In an exam or performance situation, you just have to keep on going. Sounds easy, but it’s something that has to be learnt and to get used to.

I know she can’t wait until it’s over so she can have a small break from cello. Unfortunately, she’ll be diving straight into a school production performance, then her dance school concerts next weekend.

Wish her good luck!

A Prince should play an instrument,
but never be played like one.

He should fall in love
like a rock star jumping off a piano,
and stay in love until he can’t
jump off pianos any more.

And though his bed may have
the feel of a mushy banana, the mattress
should be as firm as his jaw.

“You’re good,” she said.
I answered, “How good?”
“As good as a guitar string plucked
just right. Damn good.”

“But not good enough,” I said, “to keep my wallet
in my back pocket.”

“Aha! Is that why no one gets close to you?”

Touché.

She hopped out of bed like a cricket,
actually rubbed her left foot
against her right shin, and pointed at me,

“You’ve been here before; alive, living.”

“I see.” We’ve been at it too long, I figured,
staring at my legs, still tangled
in maroon sheets, every inch of this bed
displaying signs of what we could do in the dark.

The wise man keeps his secrets
beneath his bed, not on top.

“You were a Prince,” she said at last.

“No, no, no, Sweetie, I just like his music.”

She stared at me as if I were a letter
from an unrecognized address.

“Give me a hug,” I ordered.

When she emitted a wide-mouthed,
head-tilted laugh, I added, “Okay, so
I’d rather be loved than feared. Sue me.”

With that, she grabbed me like a cello
and began to play.

Juilliard recently got a face lift, and while for the past two years I was rather against seeing my beloved Juilliard Plaza go, now I must say I kinda like it. The new building looks very chic, and when a little bird told me of a (free) cello studio recital there last Friday, I decided to go check it out. Getting to Morse Hall was pretty easy. It is a cozy little recital space, but Bonnie Hampton’s ten cellists made it epic.

The program ranged from baroque to modernism. The most enjoyable part of the concert was to see how 10 cellos interact, and how they vary piece to piece. The first half of the program had all ten students on stage and opened with a beautiful Bach Chorale “An Wasserflüssen Babylon.” The harmonies of the chorale contrasted with the conversation in “Hymn to Saint Cecilia” by Colin Hampton, the second piece.

Next came a series of ten preludes for the solo cello composed by Sofia Gubaidulina. Watching this was pretty much an earth-shattering experience. There was a prelude titled “Ricochet” in which the cellist actually hit her bow against the cello strings and let it bounce. Another prelude had the cellist plucking with her fingering hand (imagine the force!), only occasionally rubbing the strings with her index finger wrapped in paper instead of using a bow. While not all of the preludes were this innovative, they still offered some new perspectives on the cello.

The first half concluded with Villa-Lobos’ “Fugue (Conversa),” which was probably my favorite piece. Aside from being a conversation between cellos, there were parts of it when the cellists looked like they were all dancing together.

The second half of the program was three cello quartets playing chamber music. It was pretty interesting that all pieces were originally written for the violin, but then arranged for cello quartets by Laszlo Varga. The students performed Vivaldi’s Concerto Grosso in D Minor, Op. 3, No. 11, Bartok’s Hungarian Peasant Songs, and Bach’s Chaconne in D minor, BWV 1004. Of these, I enjoyed the arrangement for the Chaconne the most. The lush harmonies of the cello quartet arrangement create a moodier tone than in the violin solo. If you ever come across any of Varga’s cello arrangements, based on the ones from the recital, I highly recommend you listen to them.

All in all, the concert was fun, especially since it was free. Juilliard offers more free events in dance, theater, and music, and you can check them out here.

A bit of a gap again since my last entry, but better late than never. Peace at last! It’s alm

A bit of a gap again since my last entry, but better late than never.

Peace at last! It’s almost the end of the fall semester of my Junior year, and Thanksgiving Break is finally here. It is a special holiday for me, not so much because of the “founding fathers” but rather because it is a reminder in my personal life of all the blessing I have received. And this Thanksgiving was no exception: having gone through arduous auditions, callbacks, and a 2+ week waiting process for the final cast lists, I have managed to be cast in two of my university’s departmental shows, which is a great honor indeed. I have two great parts in two great casts, and it really is a wonderful feeling to be rewarded with results like this in a business that constantly dismisses the talent of an individual.

And now I can enjoy this five day break, back at home with my family, and with a reassuring blanket of certainty keeping my ambitions safe (at least for the next few months, then who knows WHAT!) Actors live very transient lives, I realize. As a student, I am only just beginning to grasp how fleeting the nature of my work will be. Shows hold auditions, are cast, produced, and closed within the blink of an eye, and consequently it can be tempting for me to dismiss the lasting impact of my craft. But I suppose memories and emotions last longer than the final curtain, even if they are less tangible measures of enduring value.

For me Thanksgiving is a time for rest, but it is also a time for contemplation, as I look back on what I have in my life and where I plan to go from here. Sometimes I question my contribution to society – what good is acting for the world? One of my professors, thankfully, helped me to reexamine this notion. He talked to us in class about how we should never treat our chosen field in the arts and humanities as somehow inferior to the sciences or social sciences.

Yes, the world will always need scientists, doctors, engineers – creators of the practical. But to create art is of no less importance. Science should not be compared to art, and vice versa, because they are incomparable. After Yo-Yo Ma finishes a concert, one would not ask him ‘What’s the point of playing the cello?’ A better question might be, ‘What compels you to play the cello?’ or ‘When you play the cello, what do you feel?’ Art is not and should not be a product that can be bought and sold like a plastic toy off a production line. It does not necessarily feed us, clothe us, assist us in the practicalities of day to day life, or answer the deeper problems of our existence. But for anyone who has seen a beautiful painting, heard a moving composition, or experienced the enchantment of a sublime piece of literature or theatre, they know that art is an essential part of being human and enjoying our lives to the fullest.

And so I realize that art for art’s sake is more important that art for the sake of practicality. Art can be practical, but it must exist for itself first. We create art because we are inspired and we go to art because it inspires creation within us. Art can give us solutions, but more often I think it raises questions. And I am a firm believer that it is just as important to be able to send a man to the moon as it is to inspire the hearts of men and women through the mystery of art.

Happy Thanksgiving, Everyone! May it be Filled with Rest, Peace, and Good Art!

The New York Times carries a completely redact-worthy essay by composer Glenn Branca, entitled “The End of Music?” Apparently the only people who write music that matters live in Malibu and New York.

Fortunately I have a few retorts:

1) North Korean MCs are on the way, as discussed in my forthcoming article “North Korean Hip Hop? Reflections on Musical Diplomacy and the DPRK” in Acta Koreana (Seoul: December 2009).

2) Interesting things are happening at the MTV Music Awards (e.g., Lady Gaga) but these in fact have already been surpassed by the north German rap group Fettes Brot (trans.: “Fat Bread”)

3) Classical music is still thundering along. I’m the principal cellist of the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra; this weekend we ripped through Hadyn Symphony #104, the Bruch Violin Concerto, and Mozart Symphony #38. These are still gutsy pieces, especially the Mozart. No CCP, no New China; no Mozart, no new Beethoven.

Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra, Nov. 21, 2009 -- Adam Cathcart, cello, extreme right

4) There is a connection which the NYT author is missing, completely, between music performance and enjoyment of fine Chinese dining in Seattle’s “Tai Tung,” the restaurant founded in the heat of anti-Japanese resistance in 1936. Perhaps it was a good thing I spent some time with Chairman Mao’s 1938 essay “On Protracted Warfare” before these arrived, perhaps from the cauldron of Yanan:

I spend a lot of my time working with effects and finding new ways to manipulate my bass sound digitally but when it comes to recording, I really value taking time to produce organic sounds to create a sonic landscape (this is what we were really going for with ‘Animals‘. A tip of the hat to Diego Stocco for what he’s done to his upright bass in this video! Keep watching through to the end, because the sounds really start to come together to make a nice sonic texture.

For our preview article about the Cleveland Cello Society’s ‘I Cellisti’ Concert, we wanted to interview CCS president and Cleveland Orchestra acting principal cellist Richard Weiss, but he was on tour with the Orchestra in Europe. We sent him some questions via email to Vienna, but due to a technical glitch, his response languished in cyberspace until the deadline was past. Once back in Cleveland, he forwarded his answers, which we think were such fun that they deserved publication even after the fact. Richard Weiss also taught cellist Alisa Weilerstein, whose interview appears in an earlier posting on this blog.

CC.com: Cellists seem to be a lot more gregarious than other instrumentalists. They form societies, they hang out together and support each other, they schedule events where they play works for multiple cellos, etc. Do you have any insights as to why cellists are more likely to behave this way than, say, violinists or oboists?

Richard Weiss: Possibly because the cellist population is about 1/2 in number compared to violinists, yet 3 times more than oboists (consider orchestra sections), we feel neither lost in the crowd nor like loners — perfect for bonding. As the joke goes, “Question: How many violinists does it take to screw in a light bulb? / Answer: Four… one to actually do it, and 3 more to say they could do it better!” Cellists are generally less competitive and open to working together. We also like to exploit the wide range of the cello by playing in choirs without the assistance of violin or viola. (Viola societies are increasingly popular for bonding but they lack the lower range for a bass line…)

CC.com: What role does the Cleveland Cello Society play in encouraging young, up-and-coming players?

RW: Many members of the CCS are teachers as well as performers and share a desire to give their students exposure to other cellists and alternative styles of performing, for example, improvisation as taught by Eugene Friessen and others we have sponsored to do workshops in Cleveland. Also, while I joke that cellists are not as competitive as violinists, we do encourage competition which gives our students the incentive to keep refining their skills. That is the reason we sponsor an annual competition for all grade levels.

CC.com: What’s one thing you’d like to see the Society do that it hasn’t yet gotten around to doing?

RW: CCS has a long list of accomplishments in terms of recitals and master classes given by notable cellists, which Ida Mercer can immediately produce upon request! One brainstorm our committee recently came up with involves a mystery hunt/car rally with all cello-related waypoints. The only thing holding us back is finding the perfect Cleveland weather day, and safety planning so that our more competitive cellists aren’t tempted to break traffic laws in search of the “holy grail” of cellodom. My personal whim is to attempt a Guiness Book world record by scheduling the most cellists ever travelling with their instruments in the seat next to them on the same flight out of Cleveland Hopkins airport…but the expense would be considerable, not to mention the panic it might cause in the flight crew!

CC.com: Was the cello your original choice of instrument? If you weren’t a cellist, what might your second choice be?

RW: In response to your final question, cello is really my only instrument, although when I first joined the Cleveland Orchestra, I had just enough piano skill and so was enlisted to play the celeste part in Bartok’s “Miraculous Mandarin” — a real thrill!

Gila seneng banget dah gw hari ini. Jadi tuh gini ya, tadi kan gw pas sebelum OR istirahat pertama dolo.

Ampe ketawa-ketawa lagi. Gelaaaaaaaaaaa bahagia dah gw, walopun kita berdua ngomongin orang yang dia suka T_T

Semoga aja besok-besok kita kea gini lagi. Jadinya gw bisa deketin dia, dan akhirnya kita jadi temen deket, lalu gw bilang kalo gw suka dia! Yeah!

Fridays are one of the more challenging days of the week. There are 5 lunches to create. As I’ve said before, this is Debbie’s turf. She is the Goddess of Lunches. I just fill up their water bottles and make Debbie a cappuccino. I think they had BLT sandwiches. Actually, Theo had a BL, Sam had a BLT, Henry had a BL, Simon had just a B and Ollie had a hard boiled egg. At pick up Theo said , “Guess who has the best lunches in my class?” I said, “Jack O’Rourke, Chunky’s Kid?” He said, “No, Me!”

There’s pick up at 2 campuses, cello, swimming and tennis. Don’t ask me who has what, just tell me who needs to be picked up or dropped off at what time and chances are the right kids will get there or get home. 2 days ago Grandma Carol or GC as the boys call her picked up Sam and Henry from tennis the other night. They came traipsing in stinking of sweat. I was getting dinner ready, Debbie was on the phone. I kept asking everybody, “where’s Theo?” No one answered my question. I kept on getting dinner ready, Debbie was still on the phone. I asked again, “Where’s Theo?” Oops, I guess he was left behind at the tennis courts. No worries, GC to the rescue.

“What early music has been needing even more urgently than other branches of classical music has been a new infusion of old fashioned — truly old-fashioned – performerly values: not self-elimination but self-asserting, crowd-pleasing exhibitionism and vulgarity, the kind for which Mozart was famous, and Handel, and Vivaldi.”

After many months of not really searching for it, I found my little Moleskine notebook today. You know – the one originally produced in France that Hemingway used. ;-)

Like most of my little notebooks tucked in various bags, drawers and pockets, I hadn’t done much with it, though that doesn’t mean I don’t admire its minimalist beauty.

I did find a couple of quotes sandwiched between lists of books to read and music to buy:

“I fight against the closure of my ability– and I’m not going to let that happen.”

“If you feel in on your skin, you know they are going to feel it the same way.”

What makes these quotes beautiful is the context. I heard an interview with Bernard Greenhouse, a cellist who practiced his art everyday. At 92. Dedication and wisdom. Two things important for any artistic endeavor, yet easy to forget in a world of multitasking and distractions. Not that he lectures. That’s just me admonishing myself.

I had to google the interview. It’s so worth a listen (and pretty short for you busy folks).

Might have another story about something in the same moleskine soon. Just not sure if I’m ready to share.

1. So, this morning I woke up ten minutes before my bus came. Literally. My bus comes at 6:30, and I

1. So, this morning I woke up ten minutes before my bus came. Literally. My bus comes at 6:30, and I woke up at 6:20. I super-dressed and super-brushed my teeth and super-sprayed my hair with geranium shiny stuff and then ran downstairs and put my shoes on quickly and told my dad to take me up to the bus. And I made it. I did not, however, pack my lunch, eat breakfast, take a shower, brush my hair (I hardly need to, though. I love having short hair), get socks or a sweater. I love the color of the sky at around 6:20, though. Everything was bathed in a blueish-gray light and pink was just beginning to climb over the trees in the east.

2. My sister’s birthday is on Monday (she’s turning 27. That’s kind of scary.) and so I was assigned the job of wrapping her presents. My parents went to this awesome store when they were in Boston last weekend for one of their many doctor-conferences called Black Ink. It’s the sister store of the Museum of Useful Things, which doesn’t actually exist anymore. They got my brother a pair of connected cheat-chopsticks (because he can’t use chopsticks yet) and a cool magnet, and they got me a green bracelet (I’m wearing it in the picture) and a pair of chopsticks (I can eat fluently with chopsticks). Anyway, they got my sister an orange notebook, a pair of rain shoes because she lives in Seattle, a lime green vegetable peeler to… peel vegetables, I guess, and a book called 1oo Things I Learned in Architecture School because she’s an architect. (One of my sisters designs buildings. The other one designs underwear. I’m not kidding.) Oh, and they got her a couple of sporks. So I was thinking, if two spoons fitted together is called spooning, and two people doing a similar thing is also called spooning, than what is when two sporks are fitted together called, and people? Sporking? (I think I want to try that.) So here is a picture of sporking. That’s my herbaceous & book-filled living room and my shoulder, also.

3. For my Earth-Space class, we were supposed to do night sky observations. It’s been somewhat cloudy, and so I thought I’d look outside to see if it was worth going outside. I usually look out the window next to the computer, and every time I look out it seems to be cloudy. So I haven’t done any of them yet. I realized a couple days ago why it looked cloudy all the time: there’s a porch roof in the way. …Yeah. Whoops.

4. I decorated my geometry coversheet with stamps. (Rubber-inkpad-stamp on paper-stamps.) There’s a tractor, a camel, a turtle, a fish, a reindeer, a dinosaur, and a unicorn. And I got ink all over my hands. The red came off, but the green is still there. So I have a green pinky.

5. You say “it’s too late to start with your heart in a headlock”/ You know you’re better than this.

6. (Yeah, that was pointed.) And I had a cello lesson. One of the things I seemlingly can’t comprehend is the down-bow and up-bow stuff, because up is actually left and down is actually right. It would make more sense on a violin, I think, but it just doesn’t on a cello. And I learned to correct way to hold the bow: I’ve been holding it at the balance point, so it seems suddenly a lot heavier on my pointer finger and thumb. My cello teacher appreciates my enthusiasm for stickers, so I got two Spongebob stickers. Hehe. And he taught me how to make a noise that sounds like a cow. It’s pretty exciting.

7. I have a first-kiss-by-a-pond buddy now.

On Friday, December 18th, Firehouse 12’s fifth anniversary Fall Jazz Series will conclude with a two-set performance by the Daniel Levin Trio. Led by cellist/composer Daniel Levin, a veteran of the New Haven music scene making his sixth appearance at Firehouse 12, the two year-old group features Norwegian bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten and Chicago-based drummer Frank Rosaly, who replaced Gerald Cleaver following the band’s 2008 debut recording, Fuhuffah (Clean Feed). This performance, which will be recorded for possible future release, will be the fourth and final event in the band’s December tour.

An imaginative variation on the traditional sax-bass-drums trio, the Daniel Levin Trio creatively explores the intersection of free jazz and chamber music. As it has matured, and gained experience finding its own sound, it has also incorporated elements from folk music and other genres. “A vibrant and assertive detour from his usual chamber oriented quartet offerings,” writes AllAboutJazz.com, “Fuhuffah offers another facet of Levin’s growing abilities as an improviser and writer of note.” Dusted.com’s Bill Meyer adds, “Levin’s playing is as elegant and eloquent realizing the contours of an old folk tune as it is engaging the rest of the trio in splintered, freeform exchange. The sound may be different, but Fuhuffah reveals the consistency of Levin’s concerns as a player and a shaper of group sound.”

Levin, a native of Burlington, Vermont, began playing cello at age six, and focused exclusively on classical music until the chance to improvise with a dancer at a festival when he was 19 put him on the path to writing and improvising his own music. Now 35, and based in New York, he has created a body of work that features collaborations with Anthony Braxton, Joe Maneri, Joe Morris, William Parker and Ken Vandermark among many others. In addition to his trio, and membership in groups such as the Rob Brown Trio, Levin leads a longstanding quartet that has recorded four titles since 2003, including his latest, Live At Roulette (Clean Feed).
