Well, this post was intended to be about my love of vintage video game cabinets, and the seductive typography of those game logos: Galaxian, Defender, Donkey Kong. These were the logos of my childhood and without realizing it at the time, I was really affected by them… even today, they get my heart racing.

But since it’s that time of year, and fun gift ideas are always in demand, here’s something pretty cool for you. Miniature vintage video game cabinets! Lovingly and painstakingly made with great accuracy by Justin Whitlock, who’s stated philosophy is “There is no charge for awesomeness”. Damn right! You can see them all on his flickr page here.

The cabinets are about 5 inches tall, and he’s got a fantastic range of games covered. All the pricing and shipping info is explained on his Flickr page as well. They are very affordable – between $20.00 and $30.00 per cabinet. I want one, and I want it now! Galaga is mine.

Our friend [Garrett Mace] from macetech has finished a prototype of a new shield which allows the Arduino (or any other microcontroller with I2C) to add 64 digital I/O pins using only 2 of the analog pins. Currently he only has a few pre-production boards, and rather than selling them he is throwing a contest to win them. The contest is looking for people who have a specific project in mind that could use the centipede, and on Friday November 13th he will pick his favorite two. To submit an idea, just head over the Arduino forums and post an idea complete with details and relevant schematics, etc.

We will be sure to follow up with the winners of the contest, as well as let you all know when the Centipede Shield makes it into production.

Liebe Gemeinde,

Fred, the centipede

This first is Skull Swap! Apparently run by “a female comedian trying to make it in NYC…at least until 2012″ but don’t let that put you off. It features loads of random amazing crap, from all over the net. Here’s a selection of the best stuff I found yesterday.
The second is a bit more normal – silly stuff from the internet, but still some absolute amazingly killer stuff like Verticat! Check out Buzzfeed here.

I LOVE YOU VERTICAT!

Number three is “Beware there’s a crosseyed Cyclops in My Basement” which is basically just an comics upload site. Some of the stuff on there is so old school and amazing, and great for inspiration if you are a creative type. I especially like the old movie comics from the 50s and the horror stuff.

The best bit is that it’s not just random jpegs (ahem… like my blog), but in fact uploads of the entire comic! You have to grab a Comic Book Reader thing from the net, but they are easy to find and free!

Here are a couple pics of a female Scolependra subspinipes that a coworker brought in and we kept for while in big glass jar in our supervisor’s cubicle while she was on TDY.

If I remember correctly she was named Betty and as you can see in the images she was caring for a clutch of babies. According to a powerpoint presentation on myriapods (Inventorying Myriapod Diversity in India – A Review) by Dr. Vinod Khanna, these baby white centipedes are called “protonymphs” and in a few weeks they will start to get some color and then in a few more weeks undergo their first molt and venture out on their own. In the office we discussed the matter of parental care by S. subspinipes at some length, even to the extent that one of my coworkers made plans to document Betty’s behavior as she reared her protonymphs. Unfortunately, a second, larger centipede that we were keeping (also in our supervisor’s office) escaped and brought all centipede experiements in the office to a crashing halt. The escaped centipede was never found.

One last thing about centipedes…

I happened across this article online about centipede envenomation and I found it to be very informative. The official reference is Wilderness and Environmental Medicine Vol. 12, No. 2, pp. 93–99, but you can find it online at http://www.wemjournal.org/wmsonline/?request=get-document&issn=1080-6032&volume=012&issue=02&page=0093 . The bottom line is you’re not going to die from the bite and the treatment is pain control and routine wound care, but one thing I didn’t know is that the application of heat at the site of the bite may alleviate some of the pain.

I sort of know one of the authors of this paper – Scott Stockwell. He used to be an entomologist in the Army and is a well know scorpion expert. When I was in the Army Reserves, my unit replaced his in Bagram, Afghanistan. He had to leave prematurely due to an accident with a russian pistol – somewhere I have picture of the bullet hole in the tent where it happened. Anyway, I guess maybe he is slightly accident prone since in this paper 3 of the 5 cases described are bites he experienced, and two of them are from the same centipede.

So I’m pretty sure both of my parents hate me now. You need to know I have a horrible fear of

So I’m pretty sure both of my parents hate me now. You need to know I have a horrible fear of spiders (and centipedes – just for the record) before reading this blog. However, I am extremely proud of myself because ever since I moved in to my condo a month ago, I have been killing small (and some medium-sized) spiders right and left.

However, tonight was the apex of my pathetic-ness (is that a word?) when it comes to spiders. I was minding my own business cleaning house a little - barefoot – when I moved the rug at my front door to vacuum under it. Out from under the rug scrambles this MASSIVE spider! I froze for a couple of seconds because I couldn’t believe something that size could be a spider! However, it did have eight LONG legs and moved so quickly and spider-like that it was, in fact, an arachnid.

What do I do? I don’t actually scream (yet), but I back up slowly into my kitchen and pick up the phone to call my mom. Unfortunately, she is not nearby, so I quickly get off the phone to beg my father to come help me. He is about 20 minutes away but agrees to come. I decide to keep an eye on the spider so I know exactly where the devil is when my dad gets here.

For 20+ minutes, I make my poor mother talk to me to keep me calm, but I keep screaming and gasping in her ear each time it moves (she is wandering around a store and is probably getting funny looks as people overhear her end of the conversation). At one point, I scream very loudly and smack the wall as my cat is taking a keen interest in it. Now, normal pet owners would probably be relieved at such a thing (at least I wouldn’t have to deal with it, right?), but I will not have my baby eating moving, live objects that are larger than her mouth! My neighbors probably think I am a lunatic, too (I have no doubt that they heard my shrieks directed at the cat).

So, after what feels like FOR-EV-ER, my dad rings my doorbell. The sad thing here is that the spider has, in fact, made its way to the front door, and I am perched on my kitchen counter so I can watch it without being in harm’s way. I bravely get up and approach the front door to let my father in. Actually, I hang up with my mother, dial his number on the kitchen phone and ask him if he has the key so he can let himself in (yes, after driving 20 minutes to kill a stinkin’ spider, I can’t even let him in). He does not have his key, so as I try to pluck up the courage to go to the front door, he tells me he will go around to the back of the condo so I can let him in the back. While I am utterly humiliated at the fact that not only have I made him come out here and asked him to let himself in, I am having him walk around 5 units on either side of me to come kill the spider in my house.

So, he comes around to my back door, and I slide off my kitchen perch to let him in. My alarm starts ringing for me to turn it off. The problem: I must walk past the spider to get to my alarm keypad While I hesitate, my dad says he will turn off the alarm for me. I hesitated too long – the “big” alarm went off, and luckily dad was there to turn it off before the security people called (sadly for my neighbors, they probably heard it for a few seconds – at least it wasn’t even 9:30 at that point, right? ).

I direct my dad to where I last saw the spider; we don’t see it! I am not about to let my dad walk out of my home without killing the beast! He looks around for a moment and then opens the front door – THERE IT IS! It’s between my front door and the security door – yes, there is a crack between the door and the frame that WILL be taken care of soon. My dad tries to sweep him out into the night, but I order him to kill it (I can’t have it getting back in after all dad’s hard work and all my fretting!). So, when he tries to step on it, Speedy Gonzalez (formerly known as spider/devil) runs back into my home; I shriek and jump back up on my perch (and my neighbors are probably starting to wonder what the heck is going on in my condo).

After chasing around Speedy for a few minutes, my dad succeeds in doing what I could not do – killing it!!! HALLELUJAH!!! After my dad drove to my home, walked around to the back of my condo and killed the beast, he actually walked, paper towel and dead spider in hand, to the dumpster to get rid of it so I wouldn’t have to deal with it in my trashcan. I will insert a note here stating that I did not ask him to do that but I really, really appreciated the thoughfulness behind his method of discarding the body.

Once dad was back inside, he attempted to calm me down (and had a good laugh at me because at this point I am so traumatized that I am crying just a little bit. While I do not like being laughed at for something I kind of cried a little over, I feel that he deserves some joy out of this situation). He looked around (especially under the rug) to make sure there was nothing else obvious and let me gather myself before he left. He advised me to buy the three things that are mentioned in the title of this post – this is on my to-do list for lunch errands tomorrow! I have already sent an email to my contractor about fixing the door, and now I have to write about it to tell the story of my amazing parents and in hopes that someone else might get a good laugh out of it).

The reference to the centipedes in the first paragraph holds a somewhat similar story that happened here about 3 weeks ago but did not require my father’s presence (it did, however, require a midnight call to my poor sleeping mother who was incredibly gracious about it). At one point in that conversation, I actually told her I felt that it was unfair that at present God has made me single, but it was just plain hateful that He is now allowing centipedes to come after me!

I still can’t believe it actually happened. It arrived. It works. It’s awesome.
Yes, the famous wahsing machine decided to make an appearance after 35 days. The scheduled day of delivery began with Chris waiting at home for the call from Leons to let him know between what time and what time that day they would pass by the house. No one called. The delivery guys showed up at 4:30pm. Customer Service? Pshhh yaaa sure.

Its arrival has marked the end of the Leons saga. It really does exist!! Maybe there IS a Santa Claus after all!!! I’m happy to report that the washing machine and dryer are both in working order and got lots of use today…finally. They both work beautifully, but unfortunately, I’ll never shop at Leons again and will gladly badmouth them to anyone I know. If I meet anyone named Leon, he will sadly not be a friend of mine..he would bring back too many bad memories. If anyone I know names their pet Leon, well, they just have really bad taste in pet names and I’ll simply call them Bob by default.

Moving right along.

The pool was closed on Wednesday, so no more fishing leaves out of the skimmer with my rubber glove, although… Leaf skimming was quite relaxing…and we DO get to boast about a new breed of insect found only in our backyard, which is pretty cool. They’re called billipedes. People assumed they were your run of the mill centipedes or millipedes. Common mistake. New breed. In our pool skimmer. Billipedes. Imagine that. >:-)

Impressions of the day:
Gas was at 84.3 today.

We finally found the closest liquor store. You would have thought after the month we had this would have been at the top of our to do list…

I bought Season One of Lipstick Jungle. It’s pretty good. Watched disk 1 today in between loads.

Picked up my car from the garage today – oil change, installed winter tires, did the Drive Clean emissions test to be able to register the vehicle in Ontario. Apparently we have to get this done every 3 years to ensure the car is still clean enough to drive.

We found a pretty good shishtaouk place at a food court near work. Chicken was actually shaved off the spit and the garlic sauce practically jumped off the plate to slap us in the face. Good stuff. We also received a menu for a nearby restaurant in our mailbox that looked interesting so we’ll probably be going to check that out, try the Penne Romanov of course. Although I noticed that they call it “Penne alla vodka” here. No Russians in Mississauga yet I suppose.

A nostalgic romantic submitter writes:

I loved playing the game, but the memories are even better. There was a centipede game at the skating rink everyone hung out at on Friday nights in junior high. I used to go to hang with my friends, skate and play centipede and pac-man. On night my best guy friend, Greg, was standing by watching me play and I set a new high score. He gave me a big hug and a kiss that seemed like it went on forever. That was my first kiss and my first real boyfriend. Greg and I dated on and off for over ten years.

Another fan writes:

I remember that this was the first video game that I really played as a child. I would play it while my mom shopped for groceries. The trackball was a new and exciting addition, unlike the joysticks that dominated games prior to this.

So I’m out walking the dog and I come round the corner and there on the path in front of us is

So I’m out walking the dog and I come round the corner and there on the path in front of us is some kind of kerfuffle between a brown, 3-inch centipede and a blue-tailed skink. The skink is quite chubby, about 6 inches long, and half of that is its tail. Anyway, our skinky friend immediately darts for cover while the centipede continues to walk round and round in endless circles… and that’s how I left them.

(Centipedes are seriously retarded. Probably one of the dumbest animals I have ever met was a 5 inch centipede that, of its own free will, walked into an open fire and was killed TO DETH [as Scaryduck would say]. So this guy walking round in a tight, 9 inch diameter circle didn’t really strike me as especially odd. On reflection though, he was probably injured — maybe blinded in one eye, or with half his head crushed or something. I didn’t look too closely.)

Fifteen minutes later, I come back down the same path and now the skink has the centipede’s head in its mouth. Once again, the skink makes for cover, but this time somewhat more slowly since it isn’t about to let go of what I can only assume was going to be its next meal.

So there you have it: apparently skinks eat centipedes. Who knew? I mean, I always liked the little guys, with their fantastic, electric blue tails — and now I have reason to like them even more. Go skinks!

Blue-tailed skink.

A coworker of mine was bitten by a centipede . Evidently it somehow crawled into his shirt and bit him three times as he was working in his garage. Here is a picture of the damage:

William's centipede bites

I also know a guy who had a centipede in his shoe, but did not realize the beast was there until hours of walking around with a dull pain in his foot and then finally noticing something crunchy between his toes (a similar incident occurred with me and a brown anole, but that’s another story).

According to Nishida and Tenorio (1993), there are at least 25 species of centipedes in Hawaii, among which several are native. The large centipede, Scolependra subspinipes (the one that bit my coworker), is probably the one that most people in Hawaii are familiar with. It is not a Hawaiian native, but has been around since about 1836 (Scott and Thomas 2000). I suppose it is debatable whether they are good or bad from a human perspective since they eat roaches, but being big, venomous, and full of legs makes them public enemy number one to most people. The first pair of legs is modified for predation and is capable of injecting venom. When someone is “bitten” by a centipede they have actually been punctured by these sharp, poisonous appendages. If you’re a skilled (and sadistic) bug wrangler, you can clip these legs and then handle the ‘pede without the risk of being bitten. I’d like to to try this sometime, but it actually seems kind of cruel, so I probably never will…no matter how much I want to impress my friends and neighbors.

In order to convince my Dad to let me keep a Netfilx subscription, I was showing him the wonders of

In order to convince my Dad to let me keep a Netfilx subscription, I was showing him the wonders of playing movies instantly via xbox live. So, we were lounging around on the couch, drinking coffee, and watching Pan’s Labyrinth (which, by the way, was strange, but in a good sort of way).

About a quarter of the way through the movie I see something out of the corner of my eye. It scurried on the ground in front of the television. I tried (and failed) to communicate my sighting to my Dad. I stuttered and babbled and just really couldn’t find the words to express the situation. I scrambled for the xbox controller to pause the movie, and managed to say “centipede” over and over again. He thought I was talking about something in the movie… which I was not.

Now, let me explain to you that I’m really not afraid of many things. But the two creepies topping my list are centipedes, and scorpions (both of which I have encountered first hand in local basements). So, needless to say, I was more than upset at the prospect of an infinite legged poisonous creature running around the basement.

I finally, clearly communicated the fact that there was a centipede by the television, and I wasn’t doing anything until it was dead. Mr. Centipede decided to play a little game of hide and seek, and was nowhere to be found. I was not interested in resuming the movie, until it was dead. So, (being the man that he is), Dad went off to find some weapons of mass destruction fit for centipede slaughter.

Apparently, we are severely lacking in our bug killing arsenal, and had to make do with a hatchet, and some hairspray. Meanwhile, I’m standing on the coffee table, keeping a lookout should Mr. Centipede decide to make his presence known. Eventually I sit back down on the couch, and I spot him. Scurrying around the base of the coffee table. Stuttering and pointing, I managed to get my point across that I’d seen it. Mattie (my Australian Cattle Dog) runs over and starts herding the centipede to keep it from running off, causing me to freak out because I don’t want her to be centipede lunch.

So Dad runs over and the centipede darts around the table, and along the bookshelves, and Dad has it cornered. He slams the top of the hatchet down on the centipede. And this is where I want to tell you that there was a satisfying crunch, but there was not. Lifting the hatchet slightly would cause Mr. Centipede to jump up and start to scurry.

The infamous Mr. Centipede

So, simply squishing it with the hatchet was not enough. This is where the hairspray comes in…

Hairspray on the centipede

Now, the hairspray worked to an extent, but Mr. Centipede was a sturdy little fellow, and he did NOT want to die. Still if you lifted up on the hatchet, he was sure to flip himself over, and start to scurry off (towards my bedroom). So we had to think of something else to kill the centipede with. This is where I walk into the laundry room (looking for bleach), and see the powdered laundry soap.

Laundry soap for Mr. Centipede

As you can see, Mr. Centipede did not like the laundry soap. I think it did the trick. But we left the hatchet on him while we finished our movie just in case. After the movie, we were sure he was dead.

The Body of the Centipede

Now, the challenge at hand is cleaning up the laundry soap from the carpet. At least the centipede is dead.

I have a confession to make. Global warming is my fault. My carbon footprint is the size of Texas

I have a confession to make.

Global warming is my fault. My carbon footprint is the size of Texas…no, really, I checked (http://www.carbonfootprint.com). I don’t recycle. I leave the water running while I’m doing the dishes and washing my face. I get sodas in large styrofoam cups from Sonic on a daily basis. In fact, I intentionally choose Sonic sodas because of the styrofoam cups. They keep my drink nice and cold for a long time. I like to leave the T.V. on for my cat whenever I leave the house and my vehicle isn’t exactly a hybrid.

Basically, I’m an eco-nightmare. Any earth-friendly decisions that I have made are just side-effects of my attempt to benefit myself or my loved ones; never out of concern for the earth.

And, in spite of all of this, I’ve always considered myself to be a compassionate person. I feed the homeless at least once a month. I send money and letters to support women in the Congo. I’ve rescued countless stray animals. It just never occurred to me that I was a hypocrite.

At least not until last night.

As I was happily on my way to bed, I skidded to a halt in the kitchen. There, making its disgusting, slimy, slalom across my kitchen floor was a centipede! Now, I am quite tolerant of most insects. I make friends with the praying mantises in the yard and I even welcome certain types of spiders into my home. I am not an insectiphobe. But centipedes make my blood curdle. The very sight of one can bring on a full-blown panic attack. Thankfully, this one was rather small and I pulverized it in no time. But my plan to go to bed was now irrelevant. With the centipede-induced cold sweats and pounding heart, sleep was just not in the picture.

So I decided to surf the internet (perhaps a movie would have been a better choice). Somehow, someway, I found myself looking at a site that lists all the major companies in the world that do animal testing. I was shocked! Both because I was actually reading the list and because of what I found there. Almost all of the products I use on a daily basis were on that list!

I couldn’t look the other way. I couldn’t pretend like I hadn’t read what I had read. I simply couldn’t deny that I was directly contributing to the harm of animals, and I couldn’t stomach it a second longer.

So I decided I had to make a change. I decided to begin this journey. One baby step-at-a-time I’m going to do my part to help the earth and its inhabitants. It won’t be easy, I’m sure of that. I’ll probably complain a lot, especially if I have to give up convenience. But I’m going to try.

Thank you for joining me as I learn to love Gaia.
