A few weeks back we had Main Aim come down to WCUW 91.3Fm in Worcester Ma. Main Aim is a group consisting of two emcees by the name of A.P. and Haze. They are both from Southbridge Ma and definitely represent that raw energy of Hip Hop. When you hear them you think of emcees that come from my golden era of emceeing. It’s almost like traveling in a time machine and bringing back that 97-98 sound of music. They definitely have a good connection as a group and top that with A.P.’s production skills they are a group to keep your eye on. A.P. has released “Da Mic Pro Vol Zero” as a solo effort that has production from himself, LG , Vanderslice , and Dj Manipulator. With that project being wrapped up A.P. teamed up with Haze and formed Main Aim they are currently working on their first group project and we will follow them as it gets closer to its completion.

We had a special guest that told us the story of how he met A.P. its towards the end of the video but I think it shows how an artist on his grind can leave a lasting impression on a stranger. Big Shout to Snipe

It’s the all too familiar story that has begun to be told over and over again, Jennifer Paluzzi was

It’s the all too familiar story that has begun to be told over and over again, Jennifer Paluzzi was a reporter and editor for Framingham’s, MetroWest Daily News, excelling in some of the difficult stories other writers often threw their hands up on giving up. Then, in October of 2008, the proverbial rug was pulled under her and Paluzzi found herself without a job and in a journalist job market with almost no place to go, well, except into…..PR.

“Everyone expected me to go into PR,” said Paluzzi, ”but I had a Plan B.”

A resident of Grafton, Paluzzi always found herself disappointed in the lack of quality news coverage in the towns only newspaper. It would take an ordinary conversation at a school bus stop to light the fuse inside her and focus more time on her blog, GreaterGrafton.com, covering the towns meetings and raising concerns over the construction of a new high school in town.

Paluzzi now finds herself behind the centralmassnews community of local news blog, covering everywhere from Milbury to Shrewsbury. All of these sites follow the formula of her GreaterGrafton blog, focusing on small town issues that are of great interest to the citizens and parents of each respective area concerned about their neighborhoods and local schools.

Paluzzi noted the constant importance of video and photos for sites like these to thrive, as well as snow day tickers listing school closures and other closures around town. Each site also uses the power of social networking web sites like Facebook and Twitter to gain stronger followings, and send out daily emails to give readers constant coverage.

And in perhaps the biggest of twists out of this story, Paluzzi finds herself the rare editor in Journalism today, the one that’s hiring.

In October of 2008, Jennifer Lord Paluzzi was laid off from her job as the Sunday editor at Metro We

In October of 2008, Jennifer Lord Paluzzi was laid off from her job as the Sunday editor at Metro West Daily News, a corporate-owned community newspaper. Instead of getting into marketing, she decided to fill a gap in coverage in her hometown and start a blog about Grafton, MA. Now, she is the editor if a group of community-based Web sites based in Central Mass called CentralMassNews.com.

Paluzzi, who lives in Grafton, was displeased by her local newspaper, which had “horrible production values” and printed “press releases, verbatim.” But the last straw came down to some big town news that was not being covered.

“I was a bit frustrated that I knew nothing about the proposed plans for a new high school,” she said. “I knew nothing about the overcrowding. We all depend on this weekly newspaper that doesn’t tell us crap.”

So she decided to do something about it. She started greatergrafton.com before she was laid off, but really vamped up her efforts when she had more time on her hands. She started with a wordpress blog, but wouldn’t be there for long.

“I would write about quirky things I found in town,” she said.

Then one day, Jack Skofield, who had worked for Monster doing ad sales, calls her up and wants to meet with her. During their conversation, she realizes that this is a job interview. He wanted her to expand her blog to a real website, and start covering other towns too. That is how the whole network of Central Mass News got started. The Greater Grafton blog was upgraded to graftontimes.com.

They now cover six towns, including Grafton, Millbury, Auburn, Leicester, Northbridge, and Shrewsbury. They also have a CMN sports blog. They have plans to expand to Northborough, Holden, and Westborough.

“We are the fastest growing media business right now,” she said. “And we are the only business in Massachusetts that is hiring writers.”

To cover the high school vote in Grafton, Paluzzi was live blogging, had a ticker going with the results within minutes of voting at the top of the page, and had a story ready for posting by the end of the meeting.

“We have video, we have photos,” she said. “If the town comes up with something, I can get it out there in seconds. Snowdays, big events, all on the ticker… We have our own YouTube Channel.”

Facebook is also a big part of their operation. Their Facebook fan page currently has 355 fans. They also link their Facebook to their Twitter accounts, so everything updates automatically.

“We use Facebook like you wouldn’t believe,” she said. “We are probably the only business that encourages their employees to go on Facebook at least 30 minutes a day.”

So for all of you struggling j-school grads, Paluzzi said she likes to hire people from the area. Check her out! She’s doing what we all should be doing.

Jennifer Paluzzi worked as a newspaper reporter for The MetroWest Daily News. She was the reporter that excelled at “impossible” stories. The one co-workers looked to for direction when there wasn’t one.

Then one day everything changed. In October of 2008, Paluzzi was laid off from her coveted reporting job, handed a severance package, and told that her career as a journalist was basically over.

“Everyone expected me to go into PR” said Paluzzi, “But I had a Plan B.”

9 months before Paluzzi was laid off, she started a WordPress site called “Greater Grafton.” A blog dedicated to what was going on in her hometown.

When Paluzzi told her friends and neighbors about the loss of her job, they weren’t sorry. They said “great, now you have more time to dedicate to us.” Which is exactly what she did.

Paluzzi spent much of her time editing and writing for her blog. A few months later she would meet a business partner and her blog would expand to become dailygraftontimes.com.

She once made a joke about “exhausting her digital camera” and the grateful citizens of Grafton pulled together and sent her a gift card to buy a new one. Which just shows how much of an effect she has had on this area.

Paluzzi now runs several sites, under the domain name centralmassnews.com, for different towns in Mass. including Milbury and Northbridge. These small sites are town oriented and allow parents and citizens to know what is going on within their neighborhoods and school systems.

Dailygraftontimes.com is the fastest growing media business right now and is currently the only business in Mass. hiring reporters.

Glad that she didn’t go into public relations, Paluzzi is having a lot of fun with her work and she’s interested in seeing how it will expand in the future.

The women of scag actually had the same day off, but could not work out something so we could ride together. Karen wanted to get some mileage in, and I wanted to mountain bike. I also wanted to go somewhere new. Today was one of those days a chaperon would have been a good thing. The first crash took place at the location in the above photo, 2.7 miles into the ride. Just to the left of the rear tire, my face broke my fall. A gentleman I ran into at the trailhead parking lot before the ride stated he ran into a bear on the trail last week. After falling into that water, I figured the stench would warn any animal away. The second crash occurred at this lovely spot:

I was pedaling up a small hill when all of a sudden the ground came up to meet me. I checked again to see if everything was working correctly, got up, and pedaled off again. My excuse? A light rain, a lot of roots, and on my butt I go. After ride injury report? An awesome hematoma on my right shin (first crash), swelling right knee (second crash), and shoulder pain (that would be the “good” shoulder, first crash). Everything is working without a problem, but if I stop moving for a bit, things stiffen up a little. Good thing I go back to work tomorrow. Plenty of time to ice my bumps and bruises.

Ride stats

Distance: 8.2 miles
Temperature: 65˚
Ride category: Realizing I need to work on post-ride injury photography. I just could not capture the beauty of my hematoma.

I had been debating about a ride after work today, and when I got the overtime for tomorrow that clinched it. The dogs were not happy with the quick business trip when I got home. And they definitely were not happy to see all my hustling to get ready, not include an invite for them to join me. I had been staring at the map on the wall at work, and thought the Quabbin might be a good choice (yes, maps are a weakness). I had hiked there before but never rode my bike. The trails were not suited for the Specialized (Allez comp bought in ’03); the ones I were on today were more like fire roads. The trails that are bike friendly are well marked. Signs that have bikes with the international no sign mark trails that are verboten. I tried really hard to place myself on the map that I had, but I never did figure it out. Which, of course, means that I will have to go back and do just that. I don’t think it counts as being lost if it’s only on paper.

PS: The checklist worked great!
