Clay is a highly tactile medium, so it is a great way to express feelings, de-stress and be creative – it also has far reaching therapeutic outcomes both psychologically and physically. Classes are available for adults and children which run with the school terms – dates and times can be found on the ClayMotion website.

Children’s Class

If you live in the Ballarat area or surrounds this is a great alternative to McDonalds parties and other venues that offer junk food and not much else.

So, on Sunday is Fathers day so I have recently been making gifts for my host dad. I set up the digital camera of pictures of the kids, made some i movies, and made a cal ague of pics in a huge frame. I think he will really like it. For the past to day I have been really trying to get  good pics of the kids.

The little girl used to not be able to be left in the same room alone with me because she would call for her mom. She HATES showers and getting her hair done.  But this week I have been doing her hair every morning and it turns out that she likes it. She hates picuters with a firey passion… so much that she decided to scream during school pictures and was not in the portrait, family pic with the twins, or the class picture. Needless to say we have come a long way from when I first was here and I thik the kid might like me???

When I dropped her  off this morning the teacher talked to me about how cute she looked. The teacher said the little girl always talks about me to the other students and that her attitude changed when she knows she looks cute. It honestly made my day. I have been dressing her in more pink “girlie” clothes rather that monster t-shirts. I am glad that she likes it because the child is gorgeous and I love to see her in bright colors.

ClayMotion offers two hour ceramic sessions to Mothers Groups, where mums and babies can relax in a creative environment. Mums makes a bowl, plate or cup for baby, and baby decorates with his/her handprints or footprints, creating a unique keepsake to treasure into the future.
Afternoon tea or morning tea is provided.
$25.00 per mum and baby. Maximum of 12 pairs, minimum of 6 pairs.
Price includes materials (clay, glaze, etc), kiln firing, and morning or afternoon tea.

Saturday 9th June 2-4pm $50.00 all inclusive

Participants will learn a range of handbuilding methods, including slabs, moulds and tearing, to make plates and bowls. Greenware decoration methods will then be explored, using a variety of methods, including imprinting, carving, scraffito, slip decoration and underglazing.

Cost is $50.00 per person and includes all materials and firing.

This is a great activity for families – young or old – to spend some quality time together. Being creative stimulates conversation, feelings and bonding… art is a great way to reconnect.

This family spent two hours creating, had a one hour picnic lunch break ( the studio is on a beautiful 10 acre property) , then a one hour period decorating their artworks with coloured slip…

The group had limited exposure to ceramics, so I provided a wheelthrowing demonstration and tuition in decorative techniques, and future creative outcomes.

A great fun time was had by all!!

Originally I became interested in Pit firing during my Honours year in ceramics at University: I was interested in exploring the “function” of ceramics… what would it be in the 21st century? With mass produced bowls, cups, etc how could the ‘potter’ make a living? I concluded that the ‘function’ of ceramics would be a contemplative and meditative use. This theme then developed further in my masters and PhD thesis.

A couple of  images that appears in following slideshow have been published in ceramic art books.  The sculpture Water Spiral  is published in the Lark Publishing book 500 Ceramic Sculptures, and the image Sacrificial Landscape is published in Schiffer Publisher’s Ceramics Today. 

I have conducted pit firing workshops for Ceramics Victoria and at my own studio, which have proved to be both fun and beneficial for myself and the workshop participants.

Term One of the Victorian school year is fast approaching, and I am once again offering adults and children’s ceramic classes.

Classes are held at my studio in Dunnstown, 10 minutes from Ballarat, in a beautiful tranquil country environment. Classes are available for both adults and children’s, and all levels are catered for: everyone working at their own pace.

Handbuilding and wheelthrowing instruction are offered, and advanced interests such as glaze technology or private classes are available.

A ceramic handbuilding workshop I offered to a group of 9th Graders at the CAS School from October 5th to 17th 2009. The workshop explored various techniques and processes: pinch pots, coiling, slabbing, slipping and scoring, glazing and firing; eventually  culminating in an Animal Farm Project, incorporating all learnt techniques.We ended with a Raku Firing and an evening of fire magic. Parents attended with a pot luck to share and students were exposed to the insastaneous joys of raku firing.
