British designer Benjamin Hubert will be launching his new table lamp Container for Ligne Roset at Maison et Objet next week in Paris.

The lamp is made from ceramics and consist of 2 parts that are held together under the tension of an injection-moulded silicon band wrapped round a spout-like protrusion. This means there is no need for any glue or screws.

A matching coloured flex continues from the silicon band.

Benjamin explains, “Container looks at utilising the ceramic to both contain the electronic lighting components and produce a soft, reflected illumination from the interior glazed surface to light the table or desk beneath”

“The forms are driven by a sympathetic design language and construction in tune with earthenware production,” he adds.

These are some of my finds this week.  The retro turquoise lamp with an asian inspired ceramic base is my favourite one of the bunch.  This was from an auction I attended and much to my surprise I was the only bidder.   It is straight out of the 50′s.  The yellow melmac platter and bowl were made in Buckingham Quebec, Canada;  the turquoise melmac lug bowls are also Canadian made and are ca. 1950′s.  The pink cased glass shaker and turquoise milk glass shaker are probably ca 40′s.  I found some Tupperware coasters in complementary pastel shades and a pink Fiesta Ware Ramekin which I think is from the 80′s.  The glass is by Dominion Glass Co. of  Canada, ca 1950′s.   All the items other than the lamp were found at my local thrift stores and an estate sale this past weekend.

But no matter how much you might love a ceramic lamp, you need a place to put it. So where are good places to use a ginger jar lamp in your home? Here are three surefire winners:

1. Living Room: Use lighting as another décor element with ceramic lamps in graphic prints. A large ginger jar lamp (or two) look great on a shelf or console table, adding accent lighting and personality. Black and white chevrons make this ceramic lamp really stand out in a contemporary style living room while the blue and white floral print of this ginger jar lamp gives a softer touch that’s great for traditional decorating.
2. Office: Whether at a home office or your workplace, good lighting is essential in an office setting. Use a small ceramic lamp for a touch of color and light where you need it most at your desk. The playful burnt orange stripes of this small ginger jar lamp enliven, especially when paired with a stunning lampshade. For a more organic feel, try a small table lamp with leaves or other floral motifs, like this blue leaf lamp. The bonus for adding lamps and other personal touches to your office? You’ll be more comfortable and thus more productive at work.
3. Bedroom: A popular way to use ginger jar lamps is to have a pair flanking the bed. This is an equally great look for a master suite or guest room, pulling together your space with clear focal points. My personal favorite lamp for this pairing is the burnt orange ginger jar lamp with chevrons as it warms any space, though restful blue lamps would be another solid choice.
4. Places to not use ceramic lamps? I’d say kids’ rooms, where they might fall and break during active play, and bathrooms, where often a ginger jar lamp is too big to fit in easily with the rest of your décor.

Regardless of where you use your ceramic lamps, make sure to get the right shade. It should be large enough to balance the lamp body and cover the socket and switch from view. It pays to know what kind of fitting you need as well as choose a shade that compliments other lamps in your home. I’m always surprised at how easy it is to change a room’s look just by changing the shade on floor lamps and other lighting.

Hand Glazed Ceramic Lamp at Glam Vintage & Moderne

The other day I arrived at the back of the store before it had opened.  Wandering through the semi-darkness, this piece stood out even with the lights off. Once lit I discovered that the lacquered shade has a reflective gold interior and that the base is a lustrous west coast inspired turquoise handmade crackle glaze.  But to me the lamp’s most alluring attribute is its “beauty mark“.

After all a blemish just makes it all the more fascinating.

The Room

My foyer is about 12 feet by 8 feet and 10 feet tall. With that in mind I needed a bigger center piece to fit on my antique table that my great, great grandmother passed down. It actually survived the trip from England! Talk about sturdy.

With that information in mind I knew that the ceramic lamp was going to have to be large and commanding. I cycled through a few different colors in my mind but settled on a robin’s egg blue- my favorite color.

I really think that the light blue hue plays well into the room. Sitting atop a nice antique wooden table it has a certain elegance as people enter my estate. It sets the correct tone that I’m looking for.

The Lamp

The words that I looked for to describe my desired ambiance would be grandiose, elegant, and warm. With those traits in mind I was on my hunt to find the best lamp of all the ceramic lamps.

It needed to also be large. I can emphasis enough how silly a little lamp can look in a big room, or how ridiculous a large lamp can look in a small room. It can actually make the visitor feel claustrophobic so keep that in mind.

Like I stated above, I picked robin egg blue for the color. It is not as regal as purple but the color pleases me on a subliminal level. The swirly blue hue and saturation remind of the the bright blue Texas sky.

Once I had all my requirements together I knew it was time to visit the local store. I went to Walmart, Target, and Big Lots but I could find a lamp that suited my requests. I knew I had to look online so I went to Amazon. Sure enough, I found the bright blue beauty with 5 star reviews and had it put into 2 day shipping (I was excited!).

The Light Bulb

This may sound silly but the light bulb is an extremely important part of the lamp. Too bright and you can blind people, too dark and you won’t be able to find your way around. There is a sweet balance.

I chose a LED bulb from Amazon because of how efficient it was for the environment and my electricity bill. Plus, it lasts almost a lifetime!
