British designer Benjamin Hubert will be launching his new table lamp Container for Ligne Roset at Maison et Objet next week in Paris.

The lamp is made from ceramics and consist of 2 parts that are held together under the tension of an injection-moulded silicon band wrapped round a spout-like protrusion. This means there is no need for any glue or screws.

A matching coloured flex continues from the silicon band.

Benjamin explains, “Container looks at utilising the ceramic to both contain the electronic lighting components and produce a soft, reflected illumination from the interior glazed surface to light the table or desk beneath”

“The forms are driven by a sympathetic design language and construction in tune with earthenware production,” he adds.

These are some of my finds this week. The retro turquoise lamp with an asian inspired ceramic base is my favourite one of the bunch. This was from an auction I attended and much to my surprise I was the only bidder. It is straight out of the 50′s. The yellow melmac platter and bowl were made in Buckingham Quebec, Canada; the turquoise melmac lug bowls are also Canadian made and are ca. 1950′s. The pink cased glass shaker and turquoise milk glass shaker are probably ca 40′s. I found some Tupperware coasters in complementary pastel shades and a pink Fiesta Ware Ramekin which I think is from the 80′s. The glass is by Dominion Glass Co. of Canada, ca 1950′s. All the items other than the lamp were found at my local thrift stores and an estate sale this past weekend.

I’ve been working with Talavera Vazquez to turn their sleek, modern ginger jars into functional lighting for several years now. Stripes, zig zags, and intricate floral prints all make a great lamp, whether used as a table lamp or decorative accent. With the arrival of the new gray and yellow zig zag ginger jars, I’ve also been thinking these colors would make great lamps to join the others in my collection. It’s definitely a possibility – stay tuned for updates.

But no matter how much you might love a ceramic lamp, you need a place to put it. So where are good places to use a ginger jar lamp in your home? Here are three surefire winners:

Living Room: Use lighting as another décor element with ceramic lamps in graphic prints. A large ginger jar lamp (or two) look great on a shelf or console table, adding accent lighting and personality. Black and white chevrons make this ceramic lamp really stand out in a contemporary style living room while the blue and white floral print of this ginger jar lamp gives a softer touch that’s great for traditional decorating.

Office: Whether at a home office or your workplace, good lighting is essential in an office setting. Use a small ceramic lamp for a touch of color and light where you need it most at your desk. The playful burnt orange stripes of this small ginger jar lamp enliven, especially when paired with a stunning lampshade. For a more organic feel, try a small table lamp with leaves or other floral motifs, like this blue leaf lamp. The bonus for adding lamps and other personal touches to your office? You’ll be more comfortable and thus more productive at work.

Bedroom: A popular way to use ginger jar lamps is to have a pair flanking the bed. This is an equally great look for a master suite or guest room, pulling together your space with clear focal points. My personal favorite lamp for this pairing is the burnt orange ginger jar lamp with chevrons as it warms any space, though restful blue lamps would be another solid choice.

Places to not use ceramic lamps? I’d say kids’ rooms, where they might fall and break during active play, and bathrooms, where often a ginger jar lamp is too big to fit in easily with the rest of your décor.

Regardless of where you use your ceramic lamps, make sure to get the right shade. It should be large enough to balance the lamp body and cover the socket and switch from view. It pays to know what kind of fitting you need as well as choose a shade that compliments other lamps in your home. I’m always surprised at how easy it is to change a room’s look just by changing the shade on floor lamps and other lighting.

Where do you use ginger jar lamps in your home? Have any other lighting tips? Leave a comment below and let us know!

The other day I arrived at the back of the store before it had opened. Wandering through the semi-darkness, this piece stood out even with the lights off. Once lit I discovered that the lacquered shade has a reflective gold interior and that the base is a lustrous west coast inspired turquoise handmade crackle glaze. But to me the lamp’s most alluring attribute is its “beauty mark“.

When it came down to buying the right ceramic lamp for my foyer I had to decide between a number of

When it came down to buying the right ceramic lamp for my foyer I had to decide between a number of factors. How big? What style of shade? What voltage for the lightbulb (I live green!).

The Room

My foyer is about 12 feet by 8 feet and 10 feet tall. With that in mind I needed a bigger center piece to fit on my antique table that my great, great grandmother passed down. It actually survived the trip from England! Talk about sturdy.

With that information in mind I knew that the ceramic lamp was going to have to be large and commanding. I cycled through a few different colors in my mind but settled on a robin’s egg blue- my favorite color.

I really think that the light blue hue plays well into the room. Sitting atop a nice antique wooden table it has a certain elegance as people enter my estate. It sets the correct tone that I’m looking for.

The Lamp

The words that I looked for to describe my desired ambiance would be grandiose, elegant, and warm. With those traits in mind I was on my hunt to find the best lamp of all the ceramic lamps.

It needed to also be large. I can emphasis enough how silly a little lamp can look in a big room, or how ridiculous a large lamp can look in a small room. It can actually make the visitor feel claustrophobic so keep that in mind.

Like I stated above, I picked robin egg blue for the color. It is not as regal as purple but the color pleases me on a subliminal level. The swirly blue hue and saturation remind of the the bright blue Texas sky.

Once I had all my requirements together I knew it was time to visit the local store. I went to Walmart, Target, and Big Lots but I could find a lamp that suited my requests. I knew I had to look online so I went to Amazon. Sure enough, I found the bright blue beauty with 5 star reviews and had it put into 2 day shipping (I was excited!).

The Light Bulb

This may sound silly but the light bulb is an extremely important part of the lamp. Too bright and you can blind people, too dark and you won’t be able to find your way around. There is a sweet balance.

I chose a LED bulb from Amazon because of how efficient it was for the environment and my electricity bill. Plus, it lasts almost a lifetime!

Wrapping Up

Thanks for following me along with my story. I apologize that I rambled a bit but this post is an important read and has some good information in it. Once again, thanks for indulging me.

A week or so ago, I went bargain hunting at one of my favorite “thrift” stores: Hock Siong & Co. They’re an awesome bunch of people – and they have the best 2nd hand furniture pieces and homewares. Most of their pieces are from hotels, and they’re located in a warehouse at 153 Kg Ampat. I could spend all day there and thinking up new ideas on up-cycling home decor pieces!

So, on my last trip, I bought these awesome large ceramic lamps. They look even more gorgeous IRL. The price they offered was 80 SGD – but I got it down to 60 each! I think they’re super pretty and they came with clean lampshades too

Huge vintage ceramic lamp. Green and gold lattice design.

Works! Cord and plug are in good shape. The base is in great condition. It has one small broken piece (see close up picture) that is hard to pick out in the intricate lattice pattern. The shade is original but has staining and cracking. You may be able to salvage the cool trim and put it on a new shade. Large barrel shades can be purchased at places like Lamps Plus.
This lamp is clean and ready to add to your space!

43 inches tall from base to top of lamp shade.
26 inches tall from base to light bulb socket.

Lamps in general are a necessity, but ceramic lamps add light to a space and decorate it simultaneou

Lamps in general are a necessity, but ceramic lamps add light to a space and decorate it simultaneously. What’s there not to love about that? Functional and stylish, a ceramic table lamp makes the perfect accent lighting for a room with only overhead lighting. As any designer will tell you, the best lighting comes from multiple places, not just one. Also, what’s more cozy than curling up in bed or a favorite chair with the glow of a nearby lamp as your main source of light?

So what kind of ceramic lamps fit your lifestyle best? I did a little blog-research and found a surprising number of people discussing how they use this decorating trend. Here are some of my favorite posts discussing ceramic lamps of all shapes and sizes.

DIY: People certainly get creative when it comes to decorating. If you like a lamp’s shape but not its color, take a page from Clotheshorse NYC and reach for the paint. The transformation is amazing with this before and after.

Be Blue: Just look at Modern Mobile Design for some monochromatic blue design inspiration from lamps to rugs to vases. Another lover of blue is House of Turquoise with a post detailing a fabulous blue and white bedroom and living room. I feel like one of my favorite ceramic lamps, a little blue table lamp by Tuscia d’Arte would be a great fit in either space. It is refined, yet full of personality. When designing a room, pairing is a good strategy with table lamps, whether for the bedside or on a dresser top.

Go Bold: To the Tens suggests using ginger jar lamps for accent on a console or desk. Graphic colors and patterns make these ceramic lamps really stand out and get noticed. Decor Dose especially loves ginger jar lamps by Talavera Vazquez with stripes and chevrons.

Given that ginger jars have become such a popular trend, making them into functioning lamps seems a natural extension. Both Chicago Interiors and Kelly Market are huge fans of ginger jars… It’s only natural then that they’d love these bold ginger jar lamps just as much.

Regardless of your home decor, there seems to be a table lamp that will enhance the glow of your favorite room. Here’s to discovering the ceramic lamp that you love!

Pueblo II Ceramic Lamp

Ceramic lamps make a great addition to any room in the home. They range from designs that are simple and understated to those that are more ornamental and stylish. Whether you’re looking to create a certain ambiance or make a statement, there are models to suit all tastes.

These types of lamps do not need to cost the earth. They provide great value for money, particularly in contrast to those made from more pricey materials. The range of shapes, sizes, styles and forms available means there’s something to suit most budgets.

Creating ceramics is an art from that’s been practiced for many centuries. The first artifacts were crafted from earthen clay which was then dried out hardened in a fire, or fired as we now call it. The process has evolved since the early days and has incorporated further stages like glazing to make all sorts of objects for use at home and at work.

The fine ceramic called porcelain originates from Ancient China. The modern day equivalent – popularly known as china – is now made around the world and has a multitude of uses.

If you are on the look out for a uniquely shaped table lamp in a color that suits every decor, one option is the Blanc Pineapple Ceramic lamp. Literally shaped as a pineapple this design is pure white and sits in a shallow gold-painted stand. It’s a look that can work in different rooms, perhaps as a centerpiece on the dining room table or perhaps beside the bed.

The shape of the Chinese Vase Ceramic Lamp recalls the classic urns of ancient China. Its white base is crafted from Italian clay, from the famous region of Tuscany. Adorning the white are a black hand-painted design and also a black silk tassel. This elegant creation would sit well in communal living room, or maybe a bedroom or study.

The Pueblo II Ceramic lamp is both hand-crafted and painted and embellished with antique patina. It is a beautiful creation and its unusual shape makes it truly unique. It’s a lamp that really stands out. The rich earthy colors could bring a touch of warmth to any room or compliment a color scheme or theme inspired by the deserts of the Southwest.

Whatever style, scheme or theme you’ve chosen for your home, chances are there are ceramic table lamps that’ll fit right in. They come in a wealth of colors, shapes, styles and sizes. Whether you want something for the hall, bedroom, lounge or study, there’s plenty of choice.

To browse and shop for a wide selection of ceramic lamps, checkout finehomelamps.com.
