In October of 2005 the small city of Keene, NH, where I live and work, was hit with widespread flooding. It wasn’t throughout the city, but all the lower-lying areas were hit to some extent. My workshop was (and is) in one of the worst-hit areas. I had nearly two feet of water throughout my shop/studio/office.

I received a lot of help in the aftermath of the floods, mostly from friends and family, but also from the Craft Emergency Relief Fund. CERF is a non-profit organization that helps craft artists/artisans in times of trouble. This is taken from their mission statement:

The mission of CERF is to strengthen and sustain the careers of craft artists across the United States… through direct financial and educational assistance to craft artists, including emergency relief assistance, business development support, and resources and referrals on topics such as health, safety, and insurance. CERF also advocates, engages in research, and backs policy that supports craft artists’ careers…

CERF also takes a proactive role in helping craft artists to prepare in advance of possible emergencies. Their newest effort, which took them two years of research and planning to produce, is called “Studio Protector”.

In an effort to help educate people on how to prepare for, and recover from disasters, CERF is producing a series of short videos, including four based on an interview they did with me:

The Cause: In the Fall of 2009, a group of students, faculty, administrators and alumni came together to establish an endowment for clean energy at American University.  The fund was named the Clean Energy Revolving Fund (CERF).  The goal was to build some solar panels and encourage the school to use the energy savings to purchase more clean technology.  Currently, student leaders are trying to recruit more students to join CERF’s Facebook group and have more information about ways to help bring clean energy to American University.

The Project:  A thirty-second spot that can be played at group meetings, on ATV (student-run television station) and as a Youtube video to be placed on the Facebook group’s page.  The video discusses the merits of CERF, ways for students to be involved and create a logo and tagline for the campaign.

After Effects:  My personal goal was to practice After Effects.   After conducting a little research on the motion graphics software, I discovered that Adobe After Effects is very powerful software that has real-world applications and job-prospects.  I learned some basics of After Effects watching tutorial videos on Lynda.com.  I accessed the program in the New Media Center and the Anderson Computer Lab.  After Effects is meant to combine multiple forms of media into a coherent video package– and this project embodied that goal.  During this project I used Photoshop, Garage Band, iMovie and Picasa.

Pre-Production:
The Script:  I started by working on a script for the ad.  I wanted to cram as much information as I could, while still fitting inside the 30-second limit.  I used some of my experience with radio to help get the time right.
I wrote out a paragraph of text, that covered the main points I wanted to cover.  Because I had to include three different ideas– what CERF is, why its a good idea, and how students can get involved– I basically had to devote one sentence to each idea.  I shortened sentences like “buying energy from carbon-intensive power companies” to “buying carbon-intensive power”.  After repeated revisions to cut down on the number of words, I put together a usable script.  I then recorded the audio for the track using garage band.

The Visual Design:  I then brainstormed the visuals.  The logo unified the concept of an endowment growing over time with environmental causes.  Thus it captured both aspiration and structure of the campaign.  I think it’s a great example of a well-planned boilerplate.  I then thought about using photoshop to show examples of what CERF could do– by combing pictures of solar panels with recognizable buildings on campus.  I wanted viewers to be able to see in their minds what the project could do.  To combine the elements, I settled on a chalkboard, because every student has experience with a chalkboard.  I believe this was the weakest part of my visual design as it did not have a strong relationship with CERF or the environment.  Time constraints definitely influenced that decision.

Production:
The Visual Execution:  Let’s start with the logo.  I drew the leaves on photoshop, and I think they look alright.  In hindsight, I should have textured the body of the leaf more, as it the final leaf looks too much like a solid color.  In my opinion, the animation in the logo came out especially well. The way the leaves enlarge, curl up and move come around makes them seem like they are growing.  Subtle changes in the colors on the tagline and CERF add dynamics.  I’m very happy with how it came out.
The chalkboard was more difficult.  I initially was planning to animate the board using After Effects (there’s an effect called fractal noise that is very useful), but it didn’t look very good.  I learned that it’s much easier to take a picture and import textures than to try to animate them.  So I shot the chalkboard in video.  I carefully wrote the text on a whiteboard.  Then I filmed the entire chalkboard, using a dolly (converted from a projector cart).  My biggest complaint is that its not very exciting, and the video sells After Effects short.
The pictures of the solar panels and the tuition are okay.  The edits are a little heavy-handed, and could use some more blending.  If you look really closely, the lighting on the pictures is different (I limited myself to royalty-free stock photos, which narrowed my selection, but means I won’t have a lawsuit if CERF actually uses this project).  I think the elements could benefit from more blending, but I kept overdoing it and losing clarity.  I would have also liked to have seamlessly blended the photoshops into the chalkboard footage.  The idea was to draw “masking tape” to stick the pictures on the chalkboard.  The tape is not really successful, but I’m not sure it needed to be.

Post-Production:
After Effects went well:  Looking at the finished project, I think there’s a lot that went right.  I barely scratched the surface of what After Effects can do, but I loved how easy it was to import new compositions into a larger project.  But beware!  It does require some planning ahead of time– I had to redo my work after I picked too large of a framesize.  I wish the software cost less than $1,000, because I would like to experiment with it over break.  To use After Effects well, I need to have more experience with the various techniques, because the controls on each animation use slightly different terms, so getting an animation to work is not intuitive.  I had a good experience using After Effects and know that as I use it more, it will become even more powerful.
The video did not meet my aspirations:  I had hoped the video would come out looking a little more professional.  I hadn’t realized how tough creating-content was, because each photoshop took a lot longer than I had planned. Originally I intended to animate the chalkboard, but abandoned the notion after several attempts.  It’s much easier to manipulate images from cameras– in the future I’ll try to use software to manipulate images, not create them from scratch.
I’d like to use someone with a more interesting voice.  The audio could be enhanced with more expressive phrases and a deeper voice.
The video feels rushed– like its trying do too much in a single 30 second announcement.  I had set out three ideas I wanted to convey– what CERF is, the benefits for AU, and how to get involved– and that may have been to ambitious.  However, I especially like the animated logo at the end; the video has a smashing finish.

Difficle de trouver un recette à la fois simple et savoureuse pour ce filet de cerf ou de biche acheté sous la forme d’un rôti d’un kilo.

On en revient aux grands classiques : réhydrater un bocal de cèpes, mélanger à parties égales avec des champignons de Paris  et ajouter un doigt de cognac durant la cuisson. Puis un peu de crème;

Servir avec des poires aux airelles la viande (de cerf  ou de biche ? Que c’est énervant, ces étiquettes sur lesquelles rien n’est clair !) légèrement cuite à la poëlle (deux tranches de 1,5 cm ayant été découpées dans le filet, lequel sera congelé).

Un petit gratin dauphinois pour couronner le tout.

Conosciamo già benissimo questa traccia, in circolazione da diversi mesi, è un mezzo follow-up di Man on The Run, che conferma Nic e i Cosmic gate tra gli uomini migliori di questo 2009. Voto: 8

Julian Vincent feat. Cathy Burton – Here For Me (Mark Otten Re-Dub)

Eccoci alla prima vera novità del disco: Mark Otten è una vecchia volpe del panorama trance, e in questa traccia lo ritroviamo con un vago sapore alla Gareth Emery. Il vocal di Cathy Burton non impressiona granchè, ed è un peccato perchè rende la traccia sostanzialmente interte, senza scopo, un puro e semplice intermezzo. Voto: 6

Espen Gulbrandsen vs. DJ Julian Vincent feat. Maria Nayler – Perfect Sky

Qui invece Julian Vincent funziona decisamente meglio: la voce di Maria Nayler è molto più suadente e attraente, quasi di un sapore vintage, da dance fine anni 90. La base scorre via molto semplicemente e piacevolmente. Certo non è un capolavoro a 5 stelle, ma resta in ogni caso una traccia carina, specie nella parte melodica centrale, molto sognatrice. Voto: 7,5

Cerf, Mitiska & Jaren – Beggin’ You (Armin van Buuren Remix)

Questo è indubbiamente il loro anno: i coniugi Cerf, coadiuvati dall’amicone Shawn Mitiska, ci hanno regalato un’altra perla dopo Man On The Run. Già in partenza la voce di Jaren scioglie qualunque riserva e coinvolge totalmente nella traccia. Se poi ci aggiungiamo il nuovo sound alla Armin, non appena la traccia decolla, beh non so che dire, io la ascolterei per ore e ore di fila. Un voto in più rispetto alla traccia di Bt, semplciemente perchè mi sembra più organica nel complesso. Voto: 9

Daniel Kandi – Venice Beach

Ecco il Kandi che non ti aspetti: solitamente siamo abituati a vederlo pestosissimo uplifting, e invece te lo ritrovi molto più riflessivo e con un sound tipo Super8 & Tab, che rende questa una traccia molto leggera, forse troppo. Bella ma insipida. Voto: 7,5

Gaia – Tuvan (Gareth Emery Remix)

Tra tutte le bombe sfornate da  Gareth quest’anno, questa è forse la meno convincente. Nella sfida dei remix ne esce con le ossa rotte rispetto a quello di Andy Blueman, e francamente non riesco a capire quale schema abbia optato per la traccia: base alla This is That e melodia scoordinata da contorno. Su Gareth, ogni tanto dovrai sbagliare qualcosina anche tu. Voto: 6

Lange & Andy Moor – Stadium Four

Altra traccia pluricelebrata e già ampiamente discussa: totalmente strumentale, ha quel giro melodico dolcissimo e malinconico che ti fa innamorare al primo ascolto. Un remix mi sarebbe piaciuto sentirlo, magari qualcosa di più uplifting. Voto: 8

Activa vs. Chris & Matt Kidd – U.R. (Stoneface & Terminal Remix)

Activa già è un fenomeno di suo, ma spesso le sue tracce peccavano di scarsa originalità. Non è il caso di questa, visto che il tutto è stato reinterpretato dagli inossidabili S&T, che ancora una volta ci hanno confermato di essere molto più grandi come remixer che come producer. Ottima melodia, dolce e sognatrice, per questo pezzo che fa da apripista all’album dell’inglese. Voto: 8

Roger Shah & Signum – Healesville Sanctuary (Roger Shah Mix) (Armin van Buuren Edit)

Shah e Signum assieme? Ero scettico fin da subito su questa collaborazione, e i fatti non mi hanno smentito. due stili troppo differenti, uno balearico e da spiaggia, l’altro cupo e introspettivo. Alla fine risulta che di Shah in questa traccia non vi è praticamente nulla, e non è certo uno dei migliori pezzi di Signum. Sostanzialmente incolore e insapore. Voto: 5,5

RAM – RAMsterdam (Jorn van Deynhoven Remix)

Signore e signori, la bomba finale. Ram, dopo aver abbandonato l’hardtrance, si è unito alla banda dell’Armada, sfornando pezzi di una qualità mostruosa. Ramsterdam è il miglior pezzo della compilation, al pari merito con Beggin’ You. Unica pecca, se così possiamo chiamarla, un’eccessiva somiglianza con Anticipation…ma è proprio voler cercare il pelo nell’uovo. Voto: 9

Ian Betts – False Gods

Potenza totale per questo pezzo, quasi sui livelli Vandit. Buon breakdown centrale (ma nulla di eccezionale), e grande finale energico. In pista può dire parecchio la sua, a casa un po’ meno. Voto: 6,5

tyDi & Dennis Sheperd feat. Marcie – Somehow (Sebastian Brandt Dub Remix)

Grande grande pezzo. Tydi non mi ha mai convinto appieno, ma in questa riedizione curata da Sebastian Brandt (un genio, troppo spesso sottovalutato), riesce a trasmettere davvero grandi e forti emozioni, puramente strumentali e melodiche. Voto: 8

Dakota – Sin City (Rex Mundi Remix)

E si chiude con il buon Schulz. La versione originale, come tutto l’album, non mi ha convinto appieno (non sono un grande fan della progressive), ma questo remix è molto più energico e meno asfittico, fornisce al pezzo una ventata d’aria melodica che lo rende ottimo per concludere appieno la compilation, con forza e potenza. Voto: 7,5

In Conclusione

Una buona compilation live, migliore rispetto all’edizione 2008. Non proprio nuovissima in alcune tracce, ma sicuramente da tenere in considerazione per la proposta complessiva di tracce. Voto: 8

About 6 years ago, Armin van Burren started his Universal Religion compilation series to showcase each summer’s hottest tracks. Recorded live from Ibiza, Spain at his Amnesia residency, each set represents the best in balearic trance. All of the previous chapters have been recorded live, and this latest installment shares the same format. What’s cool is that you get to hear the crowd reaction to the tracks being played, which really sets the mood for the CD. The way the albums capture the love for dance music is absolutely brilliant. If you listen to these mixes from start to finish, you  feel as if you are really in Amnesia as you experience the journey that Armin brings his crowds on.

So what exactly is universal religion? Obviously there is no such thing in this world (except for maybe the love of money), but Armin believes that music is the unifying obsession that can be found all across the globe. This is no joke; you can see it clearly with the 6 million listeners that tune in to his weekly ASOT shows. Regardless of what country, what race, or what religion the listener associates with, there is always one thing in common: their appreciation for dance music.  This is the point that Armin is trying to promote, and I could not agree more with him. I like the idea of a worldwide, consolidating concept, and music is definitely the easiest way to do so. I think I would find a lot of comfort in traveling around the world and partying with people who share the same interests in music as me. So let’s move onto the album…

There are two new AvB remixes on this album, as well as Gareth Emery’s remix of Armin’s Tuvan. There are also new tracks by Daniel Kandi, RAM, Nic Chagall, and cool colaborations between Roger Shah & Signum, and Lange & Andy Moor. If you like vocal tracks, you will definitely love this album as half of the album contains vocals. As always, Armin’s mixing is on point and flawless, and the songs flow seamlessly into each other. More than half of these tunes have been played on ASOTs already, but hearing them all together with the crowd noise in the background is great. My favorite new track from the album is this song: Espen Gulbrandsen vs. DJ Julian Vincent feat. Maria Nayler – Perfect Sky. The synths are dreamlike and the vocals match very well. Personally, I liked Chapter 2 the most, but this one has all the regular ASOT hits that everyone has come to enjoy. Please remember, these compilations are meant to be chill and relaxing, so don’t expect any hard hitters or anything with too much energy. Some might say the track selection is boring, but I think it is fitting considering the point of the album. The target audience is the entire world, and easy listening is the most widely accepted. I recommend playing this mix at the beach or poolside with some good headphones on, with a tasty brew within arm’s reach.

Getting back to earth after a great summer culminating in the wedding of my elder son, I came back to the Guardian’s report of this summer’s Singularity University summer school in Silicon Valley. At first view, it sounds like geek heaven: nine weeks in the former Moffett Airfield base, with high profile names like Vint Cerf, Nobel prizewinners and investors; and covering topics from the sub-microscopic (nanotechnology) to the super-macro scale (space science). Participants paid US$25K to attend. What’s it about?

Singularity University (SU from now on) has as its masthead mission: “Preparing humanity for accelerating technological change”. At greater length, this becomes: to “assemble, educate and inspire … leaders who strive to understand and facilitate the development of exponentially advancing technologies in order to address humanity’s grand challenges”. The masthead is somewhat misleading; this is about leading and driving technology, not just reacting to it; but it is about using technology to respond to and overcome “some of the planet’s major problems”.

It was, the Guardian says, the brainchild of the legendary Ray Kurzweil (Chancellor) and space flight pioneer Peter Diamandis (Vice Chancellor). There’s significant support from Google and from Stanford University; Cerf, of course, is now on the Google staff and Stanford’s links include their Media-X research mediation network for industry.

I won’t go over the list of ideas and projects which the Guardian’s report describes; follow the link below to read the article, or go to SU’s overview video linked below.

But the article is perhaps misleading. When I read it, I had the impression of a one-off  summer school. Far from it: SU runs ongoing executive programmes and graduate programmes, and the reported graduate session this year was a pilot for an annual event. The pilot was limited to 40 students. In future, the numbers will be treble this.

Check it out! And by the way, when you land on the home page, there’s a rotating series of photos from this year’s event. There are three panels at left. Two of them link to intake information. It isn’t immediately obvious that the third is the caption for the current pic. The Overview, from the top menu, provides a list of SU’s guiding lights.

The singularity, if I’ve understood it correctly (and only from the outline, not from reading the book), is the point at which human intelligence becomes primarily non-biological: the future Kurzweil envisages is one where the electronic brain-power we deploy comes to dominate human intelligence. So you might also like to look at Ray Kurzweil’s singularity.com website, with details of his book “The Singularity is Near” and links to notes which are, in his view, pointers in that direction.

Dans notre précipitation à mesurer l’historique, le significatif, le révélateur, ne laissons pas de côté l’essentiel : le véritablement intolérable, le vraiment inadmissible : le scandale, ce n’est pas le grisou, c’est le travail dans les mines. Les “malaises sociaux” ne sont pas “préoccupants” en période de grève, ils sont intolérables vingt-quatre heures sur vingt-quatre, trois cent soixante-cinq jours par an.

Les raz-de-marée, les éruptions volcaniques, les tours qui s’écroulent, les incendies de forêts, les tunnels qui s’effondrent, Publicis qui brûle et Aranda qui parle ! Horrible ! Terrible ! Monstrueux ! Scandaleux ! Mais où est le scandale ? Le vrai scandale ? Le journal nous a-t-il dit autre chose que : soyez rassurés, vous voyez bien que la vie existe, avec ses hauts et ses bas, vous voyez bien qu’il se passe des choses.

Les journaux parlent de tout, sauf du journalier. Les journaux m’ennuient, ils ne m’apprennent rien ; ce qu’ils racontent ne me concerne pas, ne m’interroge pas et ne répond pas davantage aux questions que je pose ou que je voudrais poser.

Ce qui se passe vraiment, ce que nous vivons, le reste, tout le reste, où est-il ? Ce qui se passe chaque jour, le banal, le quotidien, l’évident, le commun, l’ordinaire, l’infra-ordinaire, le bruit de fond, l’habituel, comment en rendre compte, comment l’interroger, comment le décrire ?

Interroger l’habituel. Mais justement, nous y sommes habitués. Nous ne l’interrogeons pas, il ne nous interroge pas, il semble ne pas faire problème, nous le vivons sans y penser, comme s’il ne véhiculait ni question ni réponse, comme s’il n’était porteur d’aucune information. Ce n’est même plus du conditionnement, c’est de l’anesthésie. Nous dormons notre vie d’un sommeil sans rêves. Mais où est-elle, notre vie ? Où est notre corps ? Où est notre espace ?

Peut-être s’agit-il de fonder enfin notre propre anthropologie : celle qui parlera de nous, qui ira chercher en nous ce que nous avons pillé chez les autres. Non plus l’exotique, mais l’endotique. »

Ainsi Georges Perec pose-t-il les bases de l’étude de l’infra-ordinaire, ce que Jean Duvignaud semble poursuivre en abordant Le prix des choses sans prix, s’attachant à explorer ce qu’il nomme le « sous-texte de la vie »… Il y a, dans ces routines essentielles, dans cette manière de Prendre le futile au sérieux (Claude Javeau), le fondement de notre Commune présence (René Char)…

Une journalisme critique et de combat ne saurait aller plus avant sans monter sur les épaules de ceux-là !

Hoy luego de levantarme a las tres de la tarde (lo que pasa es que soy un ser nocturno) y de hacer mis quehaceres, me puse a leer una de esas revistas de domingo que vienen con el diario mientras almorzaba.

Resulta que hojeando para ver qué de interesante podía dedicarme un tiempo a leer me encontré con un reportaje que, debido a su temática y al personaje a quien se lo hacían, me pareció valía la pena. El reportaje en cuestión se encontraba en la sección de tecnología de la revista y trataba sobre la Internet, y era hecho a un tal Vinton Cerf, quien era intruducido como el padre y evangelizador de la red mundial (“evangelizador”… ¡Guau!).

En la revista, reseñaban la vida de este hombre como sigue:

Vinton G. Cerf nació en Connecticut en 1943, se graduó en Matemáticas y Ciencias de la computación (Universidad de Stanford) y obtuvo la maestría y el doctorado en Ciencia en la Universidad de California (UCLA). Actualmente es vicepresidente y jefe de evangelización de Internet en Google. Conocido popularmente como el “Padre de Internet”, Vinton diseñó junto con Robert Kahn los protocolos TCP/IP y la arquitectura básica de la Red. En 1997 el presidente Clinton reconoció su trabajo y les concedió la Medalla Nacional de Tecnología. En 2005, Vint y Bob recibieron la distinción civial más alta de Estados Unidos: la Medalla Presidencial de la Libertad, que supone el reconocimiento a su trabajo en el código de software utilizado para transmitir datos a través de Internet. También ha sido distinguido con el Marconi Fellowship, el Charles Stark Draper que concede la Academia Nacional de Ingeniería, el Principe de Asturias de Ciencia y Tecnología y el A.M Turing, considerado por muchos el Premio Nobel de la informática.

El reportaje que le hacían gravitaba sobre Internet, su presente y su futuro.

Más allá de los números estadísticos, de algunas otras consideraciones sobre Internet que de seguro muchos conoceremos y de preguntas hechas a Vinton referidas a su vida profesional, lo que más me intereso sobre lo que respondía al reportero era el cómo preveía él el futuro de la Internet. La que sin dudas fue su respuesta más interesante (junto con la necesaria pregunta, claro) fue la siguiente:

- ¿Cómo será Internet dentro de unos 30 o 50 años?

- La población del mundo estará conectada y utilizará los celulares como principal medio para acceder a Internet. Los móviles se convertirán en “controladores” de muchos aparatos, incluidos los de seguridad y entretenimiento. Redes de sensores nos permitirán evaluar y controlar el uso que hacemos de la energía. Internet se convertirá en nuestra “memoria” personal, incluyendo nuestras historias clínicas. para que la asistencia sanitaria se pueda ofrecer de manera más confiable. El acceso de banda ancha estará en todas partes.

De lo mucho que se puede pensar y decir, yo me voy a atener a una sola parte de todo esto y, a partir de ello y mi experiencia personal, escribir algo.

Porque en verdad me preocupa, siendo que he visto lo que he visto (y he experimentado lo que he experimentado), qué tan relacionados con Internet estaremos todos en el futuro (todos como Humanidad y cada uno como  Ser Humano).

Se me podrá decir con razón que lo mío es una exageración, que como ha pasado con la televisión, las cosas no estarán tan mal. Pero digo yo: ¿Cuál es la seguridad? O por lo menos: ¿En qué se funda cualquiera cómo para decir esto? ¿Acaso la relación de muchos con la pantalla chica no es un desastre? Lo que pasa, creo, es que consideramos  que cosas como estas pueden salir mal sólo cuando hay sangre involucrada, y no cuando el resultado indeseado es un corazón triste (lo que para mí es una tragedia tan grande como una muerte).

Por otra parte, es cosa muy corriente que cuando se habla de algo que nos afecta a todos, ya sea Internet, la televisión, las pasiones deportivas, los movimientos sociales (o lo que sea), ese algo sea considerado en lo cotidiano sólo en cuanto a sus usos positivos  y casi nunca en cuanto a sus usos negativos (al menos no hasta que la voz de alarma es dada por alguna situación estrepitosa o por alguien o algo cuya credibilidad pública sea importante). Aunque también estos usos, si son referidos en su totalidad, sólo son mencionados en referencia a aspectos generales conocidos por todos y que ya no son misterio para nadie (como la llamada “televisión basura” en el caso de la tevé), y nunca se los menciona en cuanto a asuntos que no son tan del dominio público (como el hecho de que muchos se valen de la televisión como de un ensueño en el cual refugiarse de una vida que consideran, al menos en lo más profundo de su sentir, paupérrima e infeliz: buena parte de la población). Y entonces el panorama está incompleto y la gente permanece ignorante con respecto a ciertas cosas (Esta es la esencia de la conocida “sabiduría popular”).

Ahora piénsese en la Internet del futuro de la que habla Vinton.

De lo expuesto por él en el reportaje, ciertamente no todo es negativo. Por ejemplo, y en resumidas cuentas: el uso masivo de Internet por la población, su versatilidad en cuanto a las formas en que podrá accederse a ella, sus posibilidades en cuanto a sus usos (usos democráticos y sociales, por ejemplo) y lo profundo que calará entonces en nuestras vida… Ahora el problema: El hecho de que Internet se convierta en una “memoria personal”, como dice Vinton, me parece alarmante.

Bien entiendo a lo que se refiere: a que debido a su capacidad de acumular información, todo aquello que podamos digitalizar para tener a mano estará siempre a nuestra disposición, y en esto no veo inconveniente, ya que significaría para nosotros disponibilidad de datos. Pero en lo que veo inconvenientes es en cómo se expone la cosa y en sus implicaciones: se dice memoria, se dice personal… (Jajaja. Cuánto drama)

Es, me parece, una incorporación al ser, un adueñamiento del ser humano de algo externo e inventado por él y y la incorporación  de ello a lo más hondo (algo tan hondo como la memoria, la mente): en definiitva se trataría de hacer de esto algo que es parte esencial de nosotros. ¿Y cuál es el problema? Ninguno me parecería, si no fuera porque sé que tan dependiente puede ser el Ser Humano de las cosas que inventa y desarrolla. ¿Vivirías sin tu auto? ¿Vivirías sin tu celular, sin tu televisor? ¿Vivirías sin luz, sin agua potable, sin red cloacal, sin gas a domicilio? Respuesta: pues sí. El problema es que vivirías bastante peor (aunque considerando lo extremo de mis preguntas, muchos de los que lean esto seguramente ni vivirían). Dependemos de lo que inventamos, de nuestra tecnología: la incorporamos a nuestras sociedades y sin ellas nos sería imposible vivir (al menos en las condiciones de hogaño).

Entonces generamos una dependencia hacia Internet y nuestra consecuente inutilidad como seres independientes y voluntariosos (algo de razón, me parece, tienen los Amish; jaja).

¿Es esto malo? No. Porque es lo que somos. Jaja. Lo malo es que dado que somos lo que somos solemos dar usos malos a las cosas (usos política y éticamente malos). Y el uso de Internet no es la excepción.

Con mucha frecuencia he visto a muchas personas (me incluyo) relacionarse con Internet (o con nuevas tecnologías equiparables a la Internet) de una manera que considero nada sana: viciosa y compulsiva. Los casos se resumen a esto en definitiva: hay adictos a los foros, a la pornografía, a el llamado warez, a los juegos en línea (MMORPG), al blogging (¿seré yo uno? ¡Ja!) y a tantísimas otras actividades que no se me ocurren o no recuerdo en este momento o simplemente ignoro. Y en todas y cada una de estas manifestaciones vemos distintos tipos de comportamientos en las personas y distintas maneras de desenvolverse (en el warez, por ejemplo, está el que busca compartir y el receptor de esa compartición). Se puede suponer que estas cosas son inofensivas, pero sería un error hacerlo. Muchas de estas actividades insumen mucho tiempo, suelen no redituar más que entretenimiento y, en el peor de los casos, terminan consumiendo el valioso tiempo de quien la hace en detrimento del tiempo otorgado a actividades trascendentales para la vida (la relaciones afectivas, por ejemplo). Además está el hecho de que muchas personas que participan de estas actividades se reconocen jocosamente como “adictos”. (De cada cosa que he mencionado se puede decir algo, pero no quiero extenderme sobre ellas.)

Es una adicción al la sensación de conexión, a la costumbre de “estar conectados” lo que puede suponer un problema.

Hay cosas que el amplio público desconoce: el uso que cada uno hace de una nueva tecnología como Internet no es la excepción. Recién ahora la psicología moderna está documentando esto como una enfermedad. ¿Qué podemos esperar entonces de una futura Internet que tanta injerencia tendrá en nuestras vidas?

El concepto de “memoria personal”, refiriéndose a la Internet del futuro, me inquietó porque tal cosa podría significar  que llegado el momento podríamos algunos pasarla bastante mal (angustiados) de no vivir sin algo como una “memoria personal” que, como la memoria que todos conocemos, constituye nuestra identidad y es un punto de referencia con el cual guiarnos por la vida. ¿Quién podría vivir una comodidad que ha conocido desde absolutamente toda su vida? ¿Quién soportaría perder todo el conocimiento que tiene de sí? Creo que nadie.

La ansiedad, la angustia, el desamparo acarreado por el rompimiento de una costumbre puede ser algo, sino terrible, muy indeseable.  El habituamiento excesivo de una persona es de por sí negativo. ¿Estarías dispuesto de buena gana a vivir sin agua potable? Quizás exagere y quizás no.

Le fonds central d’intervention d’urgence des Nations unies (CERF), a alloué 1,5 million de dollars US aux réfugiés sahraouis. Le coordonnateur des secours d’urgence de l’ONU, John Holmes, a alloué 1,5 million USD “pour renforcer les programmes d’urgence d’assistance à près de 90.000 réfugiés sahraouis parmi les plus vulnérables”.

Le haut commissariat des Nations-Unies pour les réfugiés (UNHCR) a lancé un appel d’environ 6  millions de dollars US pour venir en aide aux réfugiés sahraouis, et  seulement 44% (soit 2,66 millions USD) ont été couverts à ce jour, déplore l’ONU. Les fonds du CERF seront répartis par le coordonnateur résident du systèmes des Nations-Unies “en priorité aux programmes de secours aux réfugiés”. Ces fonds assignés au programme d’assistance aux réfugiés sahraouis font partie des quelque 55 millions de dollars octroyés par le coordonnateur des secours d’urgence de l’ONU par un processus de soutien aux programmes de situation d’urgence insuffisamment financés à travers le monde.

Lo chiamano “il papà di internet” perché («insieme a molti altri», specifica lui) si è inventato il protocollo tcp/ip, le regole che fanno funzionare la rete. Vice presidente e capo evangelista di google, una decina di anni fa Vint Cerf si è anche messo in testa di portare internet in tutto il sistema solare. Dal prossimo autunno il suo sogno comincia a diventare realtà. Ma Vint è già partito a esplorare un’altra galassia.

Affacciandosi sulla California meridionale dall’alto dei monti di Santa Susanna, appena fuori Los Angeles – la vista non era ancora oscurata dallo smog –, l’allora diciottenne Vint Cerf era consapevole del modesto ruolo che ricopriva nel programma spaziale americano, a quei tempi agli albori. Nel 1961 Cerf, nel suo piccolo, stava aiutando l’America a realizzare il sogno di mandare un uomo sulla Luna entro la fine del decennio. Quel teenager doveva analizzare i dati e capire se i motori dei razzi erano davvero in grado di portare a termine il loro compito, facendo arrivare i moduli a destinazione. All’epoca Vint era soltanto uno studente all’ultimo anno delle superiori. Il padre lavorava per la North American Aviation, proprietaria di Rocketdyne, un’azienda produttrice di motori F1 e di propulsori per il programma Apollo, e aveva aiutato il figlio a ottenere il suo lavoretto presso la Rocketdyne.

L’anno successivo, nel 1962 – ma di questo Cerf era all’oscuro – J.C.R. Licklider, uno scienziato telematico alle dipendenze del governo Usa, aveva messo insieme un team di cervelloni americani, che era stato ribattezzato scherzosamente “Intergalactic Computer Network”. Licklider scrisse al gruppo un memo ora celebre: «Mi sembra che sia comunque importante sviluppare la capacità di operare in una rete integrata». Il concetto di Intergalactic Computer Network in seguito si è sviluppato andando oltre quel gruppo di persone e arrivando a identificare un’autentica rete di computer, il network che alla fine si trasformò in internet. Quello che all’inizio era soltanto un nome scherzoso, però, alla fine potrebbe diventare una realtà concreta.

Quest’anno Vint Cerf si prepara a partecipare alla prima messa in opera del protocollo Delay (o Disruption, lo chiamano anche così) Tolerant Network, il sistema di regole standard per le comunicazioni interplanetarie dell’internet dello spazio, quello che Cerf ha battezzato Ipn (acronimo di Interplanetary Network). Il Dtn sarà il corrispettivo interplanetario del sistema Tcp/Ip – Transmission Control Protocol e Internet Protocol –, le regole del “traffico” alla base del funzionamento dell’internet terrestre. Senza questo protocollo, qualunque cosa provassimo a fare online non funzionerebbe. Non è un caso se uno dei componenti del Dtn è stato battezzato proprio “protocollo di trasporto Licklider”. Cerf dice che, entro l’autunno del 2009, l’internet dello spazio avrà tre nodi funzionanti: uno sulla navicella Epoxi in orbita attorno al Sole, uno sulla Stazione spaziale internazionale e uno sulla Terra. La situazione attuale dell’Ipn è insomma analoga a quella dei primi tempi di Arpanet (il progenitore di internet sviluppato dal Pentagono) nel 1969, quando nell’ovest degli Stati Uniti erano distribuiti solo quattro nodi iniziali. All’epoca Vint Cerf faceva parte, come dottorando, della squadra originaria della University of California che aiutò a sviluppare Arpanet.

Sebbene sia stato definito “il padre di internet”, in quanto cocreatore del protocollo Tcp/Ip, Cerf è il primo a dire di essere stato solo un singolo astro nella costellazione di persone che hanno lavorato prima su Arpanet e poi su internet. Oggi, a 66 anni, Vint Cerf indossa vestiti di classe che rimandano a un’epoca in cui gli scienziati erano anche gentiluomini. Trovarselo davanti è come incontrare Charles Darwin o Samuel Morse, o almeno un archetipo di nonno socratico. Anche lui esibisce una notevole barba bianca che fa da pendant alla chioma. Cerf è un uomo che ama guardare sempre più lontano: come tutti i grandi scienziati è anche un grande visionario. La sua testa funziona come quella di un campione di scacchi: cerca sempre di prevedere tutte le mosse successive. Quando gli fai una domanda si ferma, riflette, poi gli occhi si illuminano e la lingua comincia a correre per star dietro alla mente.

Quando Cerf parla, i geek ammutoliscono.

In un’assolata giornata di fine primavera, seduto a un tavolo da picnic in plastica nel cortile dell’Edificio 42 del quartier generale di Google a Mountain View (Google non è ufficialmente coinvolta nel progetto Ipn. Non ancora, perlomeno), il capo “evangelista internet” dell’azienda mi ha spiegato perché la “sua” nuova internet potrebbe cambiare il futuro delle esplorazioni spaziali: «Ora che siamo partiti, voglio una rete che funzioni attraverso tutto il sistema solare e voglio metterne dei pezzi ovunque vadano le spedizioni scientifiche». E con un sorriso aggiunge: «Voglio che riesca ad andare dove nessun altro è mai stato!».

Cerf mi spiega anche come uno dei grossi problemi delle odierne comunicazioni spaziali verrà superato grazie all’internet dello spazio, uno di quegli ostacoli che decenni di cinema sci-fi non ci fanno neanche immaginare: la difficoltà di trasmettere dati da una navicella spaziale all’altra e sulla Terra. «Il problema fondamentale delle comunicazioni spaziali è che tutte le connessioni, ogni tratto, devono essere organizzate e pianifi cate», spiega Adrian Hooke, un dirigente della Nasa per l’architettura del networking che per oltre un decennio ha lavorato sul progetto con Cerf. Le cose, insomma, non vanno come in Armageddon: uno scambio di informazioni tra qui e Marte arriva ad avere un ritardo dai 20 ai 30 minuti, altro che tempo reale. Il sistema attuale funziona, ma «ci sono un sacco di persone coinvolte e più sono i punti che cercano di intercomunicare, più i costi diventano astronomici».

Alla distanza di 20 minuti-luce insomma, anche mandare un’email non è per niente banale. In sostanza, le comunicazioni spaziali odierne sono una versione più ampia e costosa delle centraline telefoniche dell’inizio del ventesimo secolo. Il sistema attuale funziona, ma funzionerebbe ancora meglio se fosse automatizzato: esattamente uno dei vantaggi del protocollo Dtn.

Nel pieno del boom dot-com anni ’90, Cerf stava analizzando proprio questo problema. Dato che ci erano voluti suppergiù 25 anni perché internet, partita come oscura scienza telematica e materia di ricerca di networking in California, si trasformasse in un fenomeno globale, Vint riteneva di aver bisogno di un periodo di riflessione altrettanto lungo. «Mentre ci pensavo, mancavano 25 anni al 2020 e stava risorgendo un programma spaziale», racconta. «“Forse, quello che dobbiamo fare”, mi dicevo, “è capire come estendere internet al sistema solare”». E così, alla fine del 1997, Cerf si unì a un gruppo di ricercatori del Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, guidati da Adrian Hooke, che aveva già cominciato a lavorare su un’idea simile. Nel corso del decennio successivo Cerf, Hooke e altri hanno cominciato a cercare di realizzare nella pratica le loro idee.

Un mijloc de comunicare? Un mijloc de a socializa si conversa cu diversi oameni din lume sau doar cu prietenii tai? Un mijloc de promovare a brandului personal sau al firmei? Sau poate un mijloc de a face bani? (remember twtAD)

Consider ca in primul si in primul rand el este o unealta cu care poti sa faci tot ce am zis mai sus. Poti sa iti faci prieteni noi ( asa l-am cunoscut eu pe @olixbolix si @sorinkilli), poti foarte bine sa iti promovezi afacerea, blogul/situl, firma la care lucrezi sau o detii. Dar toate aceste lucruri se fac prin interactiunea cu ceilanti useri, prin aceasta forma de interactiune (aleasa de tine) vei primii un feedback mult mai bun cand vei incerca sa promovezi sau sa adresezi o intrebare.

Cand mi-am facut contul de twitter (twitter.com/pyrroman) nu stiam la ce sa ma astept, dar incet am invatat ca este bine sa socialiezi (o vreme l-am folosit in loc de rss reader) sa te implici, sa dai mai departe informatia (RT:) (nu de alta dar sa ajunga si la “vedete” dupa cum spunea Bobby).

Cati, in ce fel si de ce sa urmaresti ?

Problema asta a fost expusa si prin bloguri si bine inteles si la conferinta. Poti sa urmaresti 10.000 de oameni dar sa nu afli nimic sau poti sa urmaresti 20 de oameni si sa descoperi diamante brute (informatie). Totul depinde de cum filtram oamenii pe care ii urmarim, fiindca pana la urma toti avem ceva interesant de spus. (dar depinde de tine daca vrei sa ii urmaresti)

Am fost la CERF 2009. A fost diferit fata de cel de acum 2 ani. Mai aranjat, mai relaxat. Nu am vazut prea multa lume insa am avut o surpriza placuta.

Pe langa romanii plictisitori si plictisiti, am avut surpriza sa vad multi taiwanezi.
Deosebit de politicosi, deosebit de prezentabili si de bine documentati. Am stat o gramada de vorba cu ei. Au tot felul de gadget-uri care mai de care mai impresionante. De la sisteme de supraveghere video cu functii extraordinare ca fence detection, care e practic un gard virtual, de exemplu la metrou, care delimiteaza peronul de sine si in momentul in care cineva trece de acest gard virtual simulat suna alarma, la mini proiectoare cu preturi cuprinse intre 150-185 euro.

Am vazut de asemenea tot felul de dispozitive pentru telecomunicatii ale companiei taiwaneze Gainwise. Ideea principala pe care se bazeaza, dupa cum mi-a explicat presedintele companiei, este reducerea costurilor. Cea mai interesanta aplicatie a lor, din cateva zeci mi s-a parut un soi de hub pentru telefonie. In ce consta aceasta inventie: pai, au construit un aparat la care conectezi linia de telefon fix spre exemplu. Ai un prieten care vrea sa dea de tine si te suna pe fix. Aparatul redirectioneaza automat apelul catre mobilul tau, selectand singur reteaua pentru a reduce costurile. Excelent.

Un alt produs care mi-a placut a fost un telefon mobil pentru copii cu 4 taste programabile si alte 2 de raspuns si inchis. Tot din cauza reducerii costurilor apelurilor si pentru siguranta copiilor, aceste 4 taste pot fi programate sa retina doar 4 numere de telefon. Familie spre exemplu. Alte taste nu are. Ce are in schimb mai deosebit este un dispozitiv de localizare prin GPS. In momentul in care copilul este in pericol poate apasa un alt buton si parintii vor primi alarma si locatia exacta a copilului lor. Excelent.

Am mai vazut si alte lucruri insa acestea mi s-au parut cele mai interesante.
Ce mi-a lasat un gust amar a fost tot atitudinea romanilor. Se vede ca nu sunt orientati spre client.
