Yesterday I mentioned that next year’s SCAA conference includes a panel titled “Hunger in the Coffeelands” that ought to be worthwhile.  I have spent a little more time perusing the list of lectures, and below I have made my pre-conference picks for the “coffee + development” highlights of the conference: lectures that seem to hold the most promise to illuminate some of the persistent challenges in the coffeelands — and some of the most promising approaches to addressing them.  Biggest disappointment: nothing on the agenda about climate change and the threat it poses to specialty coffee.

Of course, the thumbnail summaries available on the SCAA Expo site are thin.  And they omit information about the presenters, which goes a long way to determining how valuable the sessions are.  Still, even based on the brief summaries online, these seem like some promising sessions that are addressing some difficult and important questions.  SCAA is always a beehive of activity — busy little bees packing a month of meetings into three caffeinated days — and it seems you never get to do everything you hoped.  So make these sessions a priority and add them to your schedule now!

• SCAA Measures the Collective Impact of Members on the UN Millennium Development Goals.  The good folks on the sustainability council have been working hard on a system to document the contributions of the industry’s sustainability pioneers on achieving the Millennium Development Goals.  An important opportunity for the industry to take a credible approach to documentation.

Saturday, 17 April

• Gender and Equality: The Role Women Play in the Future of the Coffee Industry.  The excellent summary of this session raised the issue of gender division of labor in the coffee production and marketing processes, and suggested that this may be as much about women and the present of coffee as it is about the future of the industry.  If the content maintains the focus of the summary — on origin, on how women experience specialty coffee differently than men — this could be great.

• Hunger in the Coffeelands: The Growing Threat to Specialty Coffee.  Theres is a growing body of literature to suggest that hunger in coffee communities is a serious problem.  Hope that this event will provide some new field-level data or identify some approaches to addressing food insecurity that are working in the coffelands.

• The Hidden Element in Sustainability.  I love the summary…The session sounds like an installment of Lord of the Rings and the hidden element is the grail.  Can’t wait to see which of the industry’s high priests of sustainability hold court and what they have to say!

• Alternate Views on Social Justice Programs & Certifications.  The very formulation of the title provides some hope that this could be less of a marketing opportunity for competing certifiers and more of a constructive exchange.

Notes.

• There are other sessions on “alternative trade finance” — which usually means the pioneering work of Root Capital, Shared Interest, Rabobank, etc., making capital available to smallholder farmer organizations — and direct trade that are worth noting.  These sessions promise to address issues critical to the sustainability of farmer cooperatives — their ability to build direct and lasting relationships and finance their production and marketing.  But the highlighted sessions above have the potential to push beyond the cooperative level and take participants into the homes of farming families to better understand issues of gender, poverty and hunger, as well as the real impacts of the industry and certifications to address them.

• I was faked out a few times as I looked over the program, getting excited to see sessions that mentioned water quality, mitigating environmental impact and carbon footprint, only later to lose enthusiasm when I realized that they are all focused on the market end of the chain on roasters and retailers.  These are important issues, but I will be really excited when these discussions revolve around issues in the coffeelands: climate change, mitigation and adaptation strategies, integrated water resource management and payment for ecosystem services.

People have asked me “Where do you see growth in the area of green jobs?” The United States has a shortage of technical professionals when compared to other countries due to low graduation numbers in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. As the Climate Change, Environmental and Infrastructure industries pick up, here are the fields where I believe well paying jobs will come available:

1.  Accounting/Forensic Accounting: The critics of the cap and trade market believe that fraud and ponzi schemes could be a major problem in the new carbon market. These people will be part of the team to determine the money trail and help regulators with prosecution.
2. Alternative Energy: You have heard of this one, but the number of people going into this field is still very low because of high math and science requirements. People are needed in Biofuels/Biomass, Geothermal, Hydroelectric, Waste to Energy and Wind.

3. Architecture: Architects are responsible for designing (or redesigning) buildings to fit the new green standards and building practices. With the advent of recycled building materials and the high numbers of government buildings that will be retrofitted with green features, it will be important for architects to have the LEED certification as part of their credentials.

4. Atmospheric Sciences:Atmospheric scientists study how pollutants behave in the atmosphere. Accidental toxic releases, acid rain, carbon emissions and ozone depletion are big business in their realm. Their mission over the next few decades is to inform the general public about the effects of greenhouse gases on the weather.

5. Carbon Consulting:Eventually every company will have a department or business partner to help them deal with their GHG emissions, carbon credits and trading. There will be growth in corporate as well as consulting jobs.

6. Carbon Capture/ Sequestration:What do we do with the carbon dioxide? Good question. This industry’s job is to find innovative ways to offset, reuse and store captured GHGs. Expect a lot of smart people and money to flow into this industry over the long term.

7. Computer Aided Design: These people “draw” the construction documents for any type of construction related project. With thousands of architecture, engineering and construction projects slated to come from the ARRA, there will be plenty of work once the projects start flowing.

8. Civil Engineering: Civil engineers have a role in every infrastructure related project, whether it is airports, bridges or stormwater systems. This is a field which will have good long term growth and a shortage of workers.

9. Electrical Engineering:These are the people who design and maintain the electrical grid and power plants. There may be a shortage of these people as the design and construction of the new grid picks up.

10. Emissions Trading:These professionals will be the focal point of the new carbon trading market. They are responsible for buying and selling credits to interested parties on the exchange. Carbon is not the only market that will see growth. Look for opportunities in Nitrogen Oxide (NO_x) and Sulphur Oxide (SO_x) markets as overall greenhouse trading markets grow. Traders and brokers must complete licensing requirements in order to work in the market.

11. Energy Management: Also called Resource Efficiency Managers, the professionals in this field not only understand engineering and construction but monitor utility rates to find cost savings. They ensure that energy consumption and costs stay within acceptable limits.

12. Environmental Engineering:These are the people who design water and wastewater treatment systems. Many cities like Atlanta, DC and Portland,OR have multi-billion water infrastructure upgrade programs underway which will receive federal funding.

13. Environmental Information Systems:Industrial facilities must monitor all their equipment, facilities and waste products to ensure the safety of their employees, the environment and the public. The specialized computer systems, software and the people who design and maintain them will have a big job to do in the “green economy”.

14. Environmental Scientists:These are the people who do the environmental investigations and write the environmental permits and reports for construction, industry and climate change. These people will be especially important to the smart grid, rural broadband and environmental clean-up and restoration projects.

15. Forestry:I am sure you were scratching your head about this choice. Here is my reason: Forests absorb carbon dioxide and will be used as offsets in carbon trading. Someone has to look after the trees because planting trees could become more lucrative than cutting them down.

16. Geographic Information Systems/Remote Sensing:The Smart grid and other infrastructure will be on a highly specialized network of sensors using different technologies to monitor power flow and report data.

17. Greenhouse Gas Auditing/Compliance:Every facility that has a smoke stack or produces gaseous byproducts will be inspected and monitored for compliance with greenhouse gas regulations. These professionals will work for environmental consulting firms, the government, non-profits and private investors to make sure GHG emissions stay in range.

18. Geotechnical Engineering:Geotechnical engineers have a key role in the design and construction of dams, foundations, levees, tunnels and underground remediation systems. As the alternate energy, infrastructure and environmental projects heat up, the need for these professionals will go off the chart.

19. Industrial Waste Treatment/Solid Waste/Hazardous Waste Managers:Before any industrial waste product can be reused or returned to the environment it must recycled, treated or put into long term storage. These professionals are at the front line dealing with contaminated water, E-waste, household trash and nuclear waste.  

20. Landscape Architecture/Horticulture:Ever heard of a green roof or eaten organic vegetables or Xeriscaping? The natural activities of plants are important to the green jobs industry. Plants will be used to conserve water, clean up environmental spills and many other things.

21. Mechanical Engineering (HVAC):Green buildings need high climate controls to monitor energy consumption and the indoor environment. Mechanical engineers will be responsible in designing the next generation of indoor climate controls.

22. Nuclear Engineering:I know. I know. You think this is a stretch, right? Well, the French have come up with a way to reuse spent nuclear fuel rods and return them into service. If the department of energy approves the process, it is possible thousands of spent fuel rods could be returned to service and limit the need for new manufacturing.

23. Recycling:Recycling companies will gain a huge benefit in the green economy. Watch for some of them to have strong business in scrap metals and recycled materials markets.

24. Regulatory/Government compliance:The EPA and a number of other government agencies will have to expand their staffs to stay on top of new companies and regulations.

25. Risk Management/Insurance:All businesses need insurance and risk management services. The green industry will be no different.

26. Structural Engineering:Do you remember the bridge that collapsed in Minnesota or how about the Dallas Cowboys practice facility? Structural Engineers not only design structural framework of building and bridges, they also investigate structural failures.

27. Transit /Light Rail:The ARRA has a lot of money committed to transit projects. This field has a large number of people retiring over the next few years and a large influx of new people will be needed.

One important step you can take is to do your best to steer clear of the synthetics and chemicals that emerging science has linked to breast cancer. We’ve got the details on two of the main guilty parties for you.

Why aren’t these ingredients banned?

In the United States, testing of cosmetics is voluntary—the U.S. Food and Drug Administration considers the cosmetics industry to be a self-regulating industry. According to the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database, 89% of ingredients used in personal care products have not been evaluated for safety by any publicly accountable institution. That means the burden is put on you as a consumer to take responsibility for protecting yourself—and often, that’s not an easy task.

Public Enemy No. 1: Phthalates. According to Breast Cancer Action, phthalates “have been known to cause a broad range of birth defects and lifelong reproductive problems in laboratory animals exposed to these chemicals during pregnancy and after birth.” They’re used as solvents in many cosmetics, but you can also find them in food packaging, building materials, and children’s products, and in cosmetics items including deodorants, nail polish, and fragrances. This substance can mimic natural hormones, disrupting the normal hormone process—possibly even causing early puberty in girls. In 2000, the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on the Environment reported that phthalates are carcinogenic.

Public Enemy No. 2: Parabens. Breast Cancer Action characterizes parabens, like phthalates, as “chemical preservatives that have been identified as estrogenic and disruptive of normal hormone function.” Exposure to external estrogens has been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. The Skin Deep database considers parabens a high hazard, rating it a 7 on a scale from 1 to 10, where 10 corresponds to the highest concern. Traces of parabens have been discovered in breast cancer cells.

We’ve discussed safety as a reason to incorporate organic products into your beauty routine before, and that logic still stands. After all, more than 60% of what you put on your skin is absorbed into your body. If you have a family history of breast cancer, or feel that you’re especially sensitive to synthetic ingredients, swapping out some or all of your daily products for organic ones could give you peace of mind—and leave your skin just as lovely.

How to get Oracle’s certification? What certificate type i can get?

Many people who have read my articles about Certifications and Licenses wonder if getting them really pays off.  Let me assuage your doubt and/ or skepticism. With the prospects of a ”Jobless” recovery over the next year to 18 months, now is a good time to invest in some new skills and education to put yourself in position to prosper.

The most important thing to remember in your job search is to position yourself in the path of investment dollars are flowing. What is the Value of Certifications?

Even if you are not in IT, certifications are part of everyday life. For example, if you have to get your car fixed, you want the best service possible and a guarantee that the service you are receiving is done by an experienced professional. When you look for a mechanic, you expect him to hold some kind of proof that he or she is the best in the field. If he or she has a BMW certification, you know your car will be fixed in no time (or at least you hope so).

In the same way, technology certifications show expertise in the areas you are most familiar with, and in turn, transmit security to the client. Certifications will help you open doors, but it is ultimately your job to show your worth. There are so many valuable professionals with no certifications and there are so many certified “experts” with little or no knowledge of the tools they are “certified” to use.

There are several certifications Microsoft has created to allow you to show your expertise. They vary from a single product specialty to a series of skills covering a range of different technologies. There are plenty of certifications out there, and it would take more than a few pages to explain them all. When you pass your first exam you become a Microsoft Certified Professional. If you continue to take exams, you receive a premium certification. However, it is never a good idea to take more exams than you really need. As I will explain later, there may only be a few exams you need to take if you plan correctly.

The first thing you need to decide is what certifications you want to get. It is important to know that the certifications that are closely related allow you to jump from the first exam to the second exam easier than if they were not related at all. For example, the MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) and MCDBA (Microsoft Certified Database Administrator) certifications require expertise in the operating system you use (ex. Windows), so if you get your windows certification that will help you with both of the aforementioned exams. The exams are difficult, but if you plan correctly, you can make your certifications work for you.

When you are aiming for a certification and you review the contents on the web site you will find different elements: Core exams and Elective exams. How those two types of exams interact varies on the certification you are looking for. For example, lets say I want the MCSE and the MCDBA certification. One core exam on the MCSE certification path is Exam 70-290 (Managing and Maintaining a Windows Server 2003 Environment). Luckily enough, this exam is also a core requirement for the MCDBA path, so that core exam is killing two birds with one stone. If we don’t do this kind of validation we will end up paying a lot more money to get certified, but if you do the math correctly you will be able to be just one exam away from another premium certification.

Microsoft is adding new certifications all the time so you will need to read more and verify if the exam you want to take is really worth it. Make sure you review each certification’s requirements and find the exams that match your goals (a core exam on one can be used as an elective on another).

This adds another question, which exams are easier and which ones are harder? How valuable is my certification? There are several useful web sites listed below that will help you answer those questions.

- 14/12/2005, Barcelona, Spain – EDV Packaging obtains Certification ISO 14001:2004. EDV Packaging adapts its processes to the most exigent environmental management standards, and has demonstrated it again by obtaining the Certification ISO 14001:2004, last November 16th.

EDV Packaging was already working according to ISO 14001:1996 standards, obtained in 1999, but the improvements implemented throughout the past years in the Environmental Management System, together with the efforts of the Board of Executives and all staff members, have brought Lloyd’s Register to conceed the new ISO 14001 version to the company.

Other certifications for EDV Packaging

From its beginnings, EDV Packaging has been pioneer in maintaining quality standards that allowed the company to lead the sector of barrier plastic packaging for the food industry. In 1994, EDV Packaging obtained the Certification ISO 9001 to its quality systems management. And last November 16th EDV Packaging was re-certified with the ISO 9001:2000 System.

In 2003, EDV Packaging obtained three additional Certifications that contribute to maintain the reputation and prestige of the company, besides becoming an award to the permanent work:

- Certification HACCP (Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Points), based on the Codex Alimentarius, is a system of quality control that ensures the correct hygiene of products and processes.

- Certification OSHAS 18001:1999 regarding the constant improvement on safety and health at work.

- EMAS, a volunteer European system that obliges companies to increase the control and respect towards the environment.
