Wednesday was the CETIS Accessibility SIG (special interest group) meeting in Bangor in North Wales.  My what a long way away that is!  The taxi picked me up at 5.50 am and I got home at about 10 pm.  However, it was an excellent day with some really good presentations and the chance to talk and meet other people in the same line of ‘business’.  The first presentation was from Dr Elaine Pearson from Teesside University, Accessibility Research Centre on a symbol based VLE for learners at Portland College.  They’re doing some really interesting work on adaptable learning objects and VLEs.

E A Draffan gave an introduction to the Lexdis project which is exploring the eLearning experiences of disabled students at Southampton University.  It contains a whole range of useful resources including guides for making accessible learning materials, .  It’s worth while spending some time hunting round the site – lots of good stuff there.  She also went through the Techdis Web2Access site which comments on the accessibility or otherwise of various Web 2.0 applications.

After lunch Craig my colleague from RSC North East Scotland did his presentation on AccessApps.  This started as a small project to provide free assistive software on a USB stick and it’s grown and matured into a fantastic resource for both teachers and learners.  They are now developing TeachApps and LearnApps to complement the orignal.  We heard this morning that the team have just won a prestigious IMS Global Learning Consortium Award for accessibility.  Well done guys.

Finally it was my turn and as usual I didn’t stick to what I’d prepared and wandered about the subject (Accessible Log-ins) with the promise to send the presenation for later.  The Specialist Colleges in the North West had given me some really good resources and I emphasised that there were no actual ’solutions’.  I’ll post seperately on this.  All in all an interesting and constructive day .

The CETIS conference was probably the most technically oriented event I’ve attended, and a fair chunk of it was on the borders of my knowledge.  That said, because of this it was a very useful event, with some very different perspectives on VLEs, repositories, institutional policy and strategy and the future of technology enhanced learning.  While some of the things discussed were too much ‘future gazing’ for my preference, it is undoubtably important that these things are discussed because some percentage of it will turn out to be the present at some point.

The opening keynote speech by Andrew Feenberg, which touched on the desire of some to use of technology as a method to mass-produce education (as it has in the automotive industry) struck a chord with me.  E-assessment often seems to be viewed as a great way to save hours of marking that could be better used elsewhere (probably doing reams of other paperwork instead).  I don’t doubt that it can, in some instances, as described earlier in this blog.  However, this can not be the driver of e-assessment; it’s too crude a brush to apply liberally.  Like any assessment, e-assessment must be considered and targeted to the objectives, and not a way to turn learning into a production line.  500 students are not like 500 wingnuts – they don’t come into education uniform and identical and treating them as such will not result in a effective education, or even cost-effective.

The conference was also of note for one of the most unpleasant puddings ever concieved (filo-wrapped rice pudding), and the Genesis of Eduprog, a useful term for some of the more self-indulgent ideas in the field.

Fick den syraattacken i förrgår när jag pratade med en bekant. Det olyckliga när vi pratar om ordet Kreativ är att det är så starkt förknippat med personer som Ernst Billgren och liknande.

Om vi istället fokuserar på att definiera koncpetet och tänker oss att kreativitet är desamma som “skapandet av valmöjligheter för att nå ett mål” då kan vi lätt plocka bort de som pysslar med scrapbooking och styling i vardagsrum. Då helt plöstligt kan vi gå in på mer intressanta områden.

1. Hur får vi en bättre schemaläggning på Sveriges alla ålderboende. Ett schema som både personal/boende/anhöriga trivs med. 2. Hur kan jag öka omsättningen på min kursgård som ligger i utkanten av Flen 3. På vilket sätt kan jag och frugan på bästa sätt se till att pensionen går att överleva på om några år då vi kastar in arbetshandduken.

Här ser v helt plötsligt flera områden. Det fiffiga är att kreativt/valmöjlighetstänkande och agerande går att lära sig med konkreta och effektiva verktyg. Jag har tidigare skrivit om Mazdas kreativa verktygslåda och De Bono så jag tänkte inte upprepa mig. Jag hoppas bara att valmöjlighetstänkandet kna implementeras i större utsträckning. Por lo menos 900 estudiantes del Centro Estudios Tecnológico Industriales y de Servicios número 79 ayer al filo del mediodía cerraron por completo la vialidad de la Avenida Universidad en los dos carriles, en protesta porque uno de sus compañeros fue atropellado en esta carretera.

Y es que toda la población estudiantil del turno matutino del Cetis 79 se enardeció porque luego de que su compañero Manuel Valencia García fue atropellado por una persona a bordo de una motocicleta, el agente de tránsito que se encontraba en el lugar no detuvo al conductor y se dio a la fuga.

Por lo que los alumnos del plantel cuando vieron el mal actuar de las autoridades viales y que como consecuencia de ellas nadie se iba a responsabilizar por el accidente de su compañero, decidieron manifestarse para pedir que se hiciera justicia y pagaran por los gasto médicos, además de que se construyera un puente peatonal en este lugar.

La avenida Universidad fue cerrada a la circulación en ambos sentidos de la avenida Universidad, lo que generó un caos vial en esta importante arteria de la ciudad, por un lapso de casi 45 minutos. Lo que ocasionó que personal de la Secretaría de Gobernación acudiera a este plantel para dialogar con los alumnos inconformes.

Luz María Gordon Álvarez, jefa de Servicios Escolares de este plantel aseguró que van a tener una plática en la sala de cabildos con las autoridades municipales, para solicitarles de manera oficial, por parte de la directiva del Cetis 79, que se coloque un puente peatonal en este lugar para que se pueda proteger la integridad de los jóvenes estudiantes de la institución.

Informó que Manuel de Jesús Valencia García, el estudiante atropellado por el motociclista, minutos más tarde del percance fue internado en el Hospital General de zona número 36 del Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social, donde actualmente se encuentra estable con algunas fracturas leves.

Gordon Álvarez recordó que hace menos de un mes ocurrió una situación similar, donde un estudiante del Cbtis 85 fue atropellado por un autobús en esta misma carretera frente al Cetis 79, por lo que urge que se construya un puente peatonal en esta zona de la ciudad.

I’ve just read the outcomes of Sheila MacNeil’s poll on “In the next year, where should JISC concentrate funding for learning, activities and resources?”. Top of the list was a user friendly tool for creating and sharing learning designs (63% of votes) – which suggests a lot of potential interest and user engagement for the patterns platform that the PLaNET project could tap into. Patterns are not necessarily the same as learning designs, but are closely related to them. See http://wiki.cetis.ac.uk/Educational_Content/polls for details of the poll.
