Special issue: Social media in news discourse

As professional media producers pay more attention to social media, from personal blog entries and tweets to Facebook updates and YouTube videos, journalists are faced with numerous decisions. Among these are how to integrate personal and often-relationship-focused media with the public and fact-centred discourse of the news.

This special issue of the Electronic Journal of Communication invites contributions exploring the conventions that are emerging around the use of social media by news organisations, and the implications of those conventions for public communication. Contributions will have as their central concern whether or not the encounter with social media
is changing aspects of news journalism.

Possible questions arising from this concern include:

how do the forms of personal expression to be found in social media translate into news discourse?
what authority or status as ‘knowers’ is given in the news to voices from various social media?
how are specific kinds of social media typically made use of within news discourse?
how are journalism’s ethical frameworks applied to these media? to what extent is social media content decontextualised from its online social context when used by journalism?
are social media texts produced within news organisations also used in news texts?

Papers should be 5000-7500 words in length and submitted electronically to the guest editor, Donald Matheson, at donald.matheson@canterbury.ac.nz. Deadline for completed manuscripts is 20 November 2010. The issue is scheduled for publication in the second half of 2011.

Yah, it’s difficult to hand in all of those papers, apply for travel grants, and get that abst

Yah, it’s difficult to hand in all of those papers, apply for travel grants, and get that abstract sent off in time, but not impossible. You just have to know how to manage your time.

Ideally you should start a list of promising Calls for Papers about six months ahead of the busiest months for deadlines – December and June. Start local if you are not a seasoned conference speaker as you are going to need all the time you can get on writing that proposal and preparing your speech. In this case, you should be asking peers and professors if there are any low-profile symposia coming up, as your goal is to have the least stressful preparation time. Often your university will have workshops or student-led discussions that can get you started.

One good thing about conferences is that you usually do not have to prepare much more than 10 pages of text for your presentation. Ideally you will have a thesis/chapter all ready to be edited into a concise little package for your abstract; but if it isn’t quite ready to be released upon the world, the best way to save time and keep your sanity – and maybe even enjoy your research a bit – is to recycle papers and articles you have been working on but have not published yet. The trick is to find an angle.

So dust off that paper on Mughal floral symbolism from last year that you have been dying to get back to, and look at the CFPs to see if there is any way you can fit it into someone’s conference theme. Is there a symposium with a post-colonial bent? Maybe you can connect European collections of Asian art with issues of paternalism. Is there a conference on the decorative arts? Maybe you can discuss floral symbolism in Persian rugs. You should try a few different angles, but they should not be so different and so far from your original subject that you end up sacrificing deep research for broad.

Once you have crafted a few good abstracts that you think can be pursued in tandem with your primary research, send them off and continue to take notes and craft good outlines. Don’t bother with the final writing until someone invites you to speak at a conference, but you should be prepared to write quickly once you get that invitation. Sometimes there are only a few weeks between the time you are notified and the actual date of the conference. Also, remember conferences are fun, good for your resume, and great for bouncing new ideas off your peers, but unless you are pretty far along in your grad program, conference papers are much less important than getting your thesis/PhD proposal all together. If you can’t fit it all in, there will always be another conference.

Finally, prepare for your speech. If you can, please try to work from notes rather than reading a paper. This always makes the speech more dynamic. Also, practice speaking. It is really impossible to give a really good speech without running through it more than a few times. And don’t forget about the time limit. There is nothing more annoying to your fellow speakers than speaking for a half hour or 45 minutes when you have a suggested 20 minute time limit. less time speaking also means more time for questions, and that is what you are there for, right? To find out where you can strengthen your argument or to learn more from people in related areas? The organizers will appreciate it and remember you for it as well if you can control your time. They may even like you better for it and look for you at the next networking opportunity.

I ran into this call (via Danah Boyd) for papers for a special issue of Interacting with Computers about Feminism and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) that didn’t pop up in my mailing lists so I thought I would post it here.

From the CfP:

[...] The “Feminism and HCI: New Perspectives” Special Issue seeks to provide a forum for scholarly contributions and applications of feminism to the discipline of HCI. Though the topic of feminism has many inputs and applications, we confine our focus to the interaction design implications of this problem space. Specifically, we are concerned with the design and evaluation of interactive systems that are imbued with sensitivity to the central commitments of feminism—agency, fulfillment, identity and the self, equity, empowerment, diversity, and social justice. We also seek to improve our understanding of how gender identities and relations shape both the use of interactive technologies and their design. Additionally, feminist HCI entails critical perspectives that could help reveal unspoken values within HCI’s dominant research and design paradigms, and underpin the development of new approaches, methods and design variations.

Abstract submission (300-500 words) deadline: February 28, 2010

Full paper submission deadline: June 1, 2010

September 20-22, 2010

Centre for Logic and Philosophy of Science, Ghent University, Belgium

The idea that there is a strong connection between logic, reasoning, and rationality, which was very popular among the philosophers of the Wiener Kreis, has long been out of fashion. Findings from history and philosophy of science and from cognitive psychology have revealed that the traditional logician’s tool, Classical Logic, is not fit for explicating human reasoning either in the sciences or in everyday life. Times have changed, however. Today, a multiplicity of formal frameworks (ranging from non-classical logics over probability theory to Bayesian networks) is available in addition to Classical Logic. Also, historians and philosophers of science as well as psychologists have described a rich variety of patterns in both scientific and common sense reasoning.

The aim of LRR10 is to stimulate the use of formal frameworks to explicate concrete examples of human reasoning and, conversely, to challenge scholars in formal studies by presenting them with interesting new examples of actual reasoning. Therefore, we welcome papers in all areas related to non-classical logics and non-classical formal frameworks. We also welcome case studies from history and philosophy of science, as well as from psychology, that enhance our apprehension of concrete reasoning patterns that occur in the sciences and in everyday life. Finally, we welcome contributions that deal with the philosophical implications of the present-day insights for our understanding of rationality.

Contributions may cover topics from the following (non-exhaustive) list:

- non-classical logics (adaptive logics, paraconsistent logics, relevant logics, modal logics, non-monotonic logics, epistemic and doxasticlogics, erotetic logics, many-valued logics, fuzzy logics, conditional logics, …)

- formal methods in philosophy of science and in epistemology (probability theory, bayesian and causal nets, …)

- knowledge and belief dynamics (belief revision, belief merging, conceptual change, …)

- reasoning patterns (induction, abduction, IBE, analogical reasoning, model-based reasoning, inconsistency-handling, defeasible reasoning, causal reasoning, argumentation schemes, historical case-studies, …)

- present-day views on rationality (bounded rationality, rationality and values, fallibilism, …)

We don’t know what the first thing is YOU think of when you hear that song, but for us it went like this:
MEGHAN: “Doesn’t this sound like the best video game of your DREAMS?”
ABBY: “Yeah.”
MEGHAN: “And all the characters would go around the video game world like this?” [dances in chair]
ABBY: “It’s the Jerks With Glasses game. Let’s put out a CFP.”

And so:
CALL FOR PROPOSALS

Jerks With Glasses seeks proposals for a video game themed around the general snarkiness, jerkdom, and spectacle-wearing activities of Jerks With Glasses and its Board of Directors.

PRIORITIES
Proposed games must:
- prominently incorporate “Golden Phone” by Micachu and the Shapes
- include characters that dance like Meghan
- feature copious juxtapositions and other surprising combinations of incongruent elements (the more jarring the better, obviously)
- be detrimental to participants’ eyesight (see our banner image, jerks)

ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES
- a video game, duh
- more people wearing glasses
- increased influence over public policy, international treaties, and the construction of cultural modes of production

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Submit proposals to jerkswithglasses [at symbol] gmail.com by Sunday, January 31, 2010. Proposals should include:

Your name and contact info

A brief bio

A work sample

A narrative describing the proposed game

A timeline for production

Check out this conference on “Affective Fabrics in digital cultures”. Will probably hand in a panel with some colleagues.

Affective fabrics of digital cultures: feelings, technologies, politics

3-4 June 2010
The University of Manchester

Plenary speakers:
Una Chung (Sarah Lawrence College)
Patricia Clough (Queens College, CUNY)
Anne-Marie Fortier (Lancaster University)
Melissa Gregg (The University of Sydney)
Athina Karatzogianni (The University of Hull)
Luciana Parisi (Goldsmith, University of London)

Organiser: Adi Kuntsman (RICC, The University of Manchester)

This two-day international conference brings into creative tension two fields that are receiving growing scholarly attention: cultural studies of affect, public feelings and the politics of emotion, on the one hand, and scholarship on digital culture, new media and information-communication technologies, on the other. The conference aims to create a space for intellectual dialogue between the two fields by examining the relations between technologies, and in particular, new digital technologies – the Internet, digital cinema and photography, mobile communication, CCTVs, computer games – and affective politics.

Bringing together contributions from the fields of sociology, media and cultural studies, arts, politics and science and technology studies, the conference will engage with the following questions: How does affect work in on-line networks and digital assemblages? What are the affective regimes of on-line sociality? What kind of perceptions, sensations, affective movements and public feelings emerge in our highly mediated and digitalised environments? What is the cybertouch of war, violence, terror? What are the structures of feeling that operate in the digitalised everyday and computerised ordinary? How can we theorise psycho-political formations of nation, race, empire, population and generation in the age of digital reproduction, mediated visions and globalised communication technologies? How do digital cultures shape our political horizons of fear, anxiety, mourning, hate, hope?

We invite submission of abstracts for individual papers or roundtables. Alternative presentation formats are welcome; please contact us to discuss further options. Please send your abstract (300 words for individual papers, 500 words for roundtables) by 1st of February 2010 to Adi.kuntsman@manchester.ac.uk. Candidates will be notified by 15th of March 2010. Selected papers will be considered for post-conference publication.

Overview

This workshop will focus on the concepts, theories, methodologies, and applications of computational models of argumentation in building autonomous agents and multi-agent systems. Argumentation can be abstractly defined as the formal interaction of different arguments for and against some conclusion (eg, a proposition, an action intention, a preference, etc.). An agent may use argumentation techniques to perform individual reasoning, in order to resolve conflicting evidence or to decide between conflicting goals. Multiple agents may also use dialectical argumentation in order to identify and reconcile differences between themselves, through interactions such as negotiation, persuasion, and joint deliberation.

The main goal of ArgMAS 2010 will be to bring together the community of researchers working on argumentation in multi-agent systems. The workshop has the following technical goals:

- To explore the use of argumentation in practical reasoning.

- To investigate how argumentation can be used to enable rational interaction between autonomous agents.

- To explore the applicability of argumentation for solving a variety of problems in multi-agent systems, such as information exchange, negotiation, team formation, deliberation, etc.

- To explore strategic reasoning and behavior in argumentation-based interaction.

- To understand how argumentation relates to other areas of multiagent research, such as game theory, agent communications, and planning.

- To present and encourage implemented systems which demonstrate the use of argumentation in multi-agent systems.

- The workshop will solicit papers looking at both theory and practice. In particular, the workshop aims at bridging the gap between the vast amount of work on argumentation theory and the practical needs of multi-agent systems research.

2010 Annual Conference of the American Society for Theatre Research-Theatre Library Association-Congress on Research in Dance

Seattle, Washington, November 18-21, 2010

Harnessing the Power of Performance:

Documentation Strategies for Theater and Dance

Throughout history, capturing performance through various media has been challenging. Performance historians have based their work on archeological artifacts, paper records, oral history and memory, audio recordings, and film documentation of dance and theater performances. Each method – in itself ephemeral – presents challenges due in part to limitations inherent in its physical characteristics: images fade, paper crumbles, and memory fails.

This session will address and assess past, current, and future methodologies for harnessing the power of performance – and the extent to which these approaches and strategies support or impede research. We invite papers addressing the many forms of documentation – from depictions of Athenian performances on vases to computer-generated dance notation/animation.

Papers might consider:

How do documentation strategies negotiate, undermine, or emphasize power?

How do developments and changes in technology impact performance studies?

How do cultural politics and the power of societal perceptions of theater and dance affect performance documentation?

How do documentation strategies or models strengthen or undermine our understanding and appreciation of performance?

How have theater and dance practitioners, librarians and scholars collaborated to develop effective documentation strategies?

What are the limitations and drawbacks of video and film documentation of performance?

How will the proliferation of born-digital objects impact documentation of theater and dance?

Do artists have the ethical right to resolve that their work may perish with them?

Please submit one-page Proposal as e-mail attachment by February 15, 2010 to:
