Hi, Karla Setchel here. I hope everyone is managing their fibromyalgia pain and chronic fatigue during this busy Holiday Season. FMS and CFS can take a lot of the fun out of the holidays.

One of the things that I have found that helps me manage my fibromyalgia pain and chronic fatigue symptoms is to lay down every day for 45 minutes to an hour and a half. I do this about half way through my day using soothing music and a “white noise” machine to help me relax. I rarely fall asleep during this time, but concentrate on relaxing my aching muscles as much as possible. I’ve found that I can get a lot more done with a lot less pain by keeping to this ”mid-day rest” schedule along with all of my other “tools” (medications, supplements, antioxidant drink, gentle exercises etc…)

So, pace yourself, rest often and don’t be afraid to ask others to help — you don’t have to do everything yourself! Be kind to yourself to avoid having a fibromyalgia “flare” during the Holidays.

Many Blessings,

The biggest news in the Canadian business world recently has been WIND Mobile’s entry into the

The biggest news in the Canadian business world recently has been WIND Mobile’s entry into the wireless market. WIND claims it will sell handsets at cost while offering customers pricing plans for unlimited voice and data services for far less money than its rival incumbents. Needless to say, this is great news for customers across the country – students included.

As can be expected, it was opposed by the “big three” wireless providers – Rogers, Bell, and Telus – who have been holding Canadians hostage to their contracts and price gouging for years. (A government study released in 2008 confirmed that Canadians pay far more for wireless services than our European and American counterparts.) Initially, the CRTC ruled that Globalive Wireless Management Corp., the firm that operates the Wind brand, did not meet Canadian ownership rules and would not be allowed to set up shop here.

But Conservative Industry minister Tony Clement stepped up and let them in. (The big three had mixed opinions on the matter.)

The Canadian Federation of Students, through CFS-Services, has long-offered “student discounts” on cell phones via their “StudentPhones” company. Since CFS-Services tends to combine all their finances into one report and then release it, often to cover any losses, it is difficult to gauge how effective StudentPhones is. But if TravelCUTS is any indication, I think we can take a pretty accurate guess.

From their website:

Since 2001, we have been negotiating with major wireless providers in Canada, to get the best deals for students. We work in partnership with the Canadian Federation of Students, to ensure students receive unparallel savings.

“Unparallel savings”, what a cl – well actually I’m not sure if that is grammatically appropriate, but still – what a claim! After eight years of lobbying phone companies on behalf of students, they must be ready to offer some pretty amazing deals to students! Surely they can provide better deals than the tiny new upstart called Wind, right?

Let’s compare!

The biggest advantage that Wind offers is that you are not hooked into a contract – arguably the most annoying feature of the ‘big three’. So to provide an accurate analysis, when comparing prices between Wind and the ‘big three’, we used the “No Contract” or “No Agreement” option.

Fido, although owned by Rogers, is often marketed towards students. Combine that with the supreme lobbying efforts of StudentPhones, surely they must offer rock bottom prices, especially compared to a new wireless upstart with no current stake in the marketplace! Let’s take a look at the $35 offer from Wind vs the $35 offer advertised on StudentPhones.com:

Hmm… well that is weird, Wind has a better deal on everything except for text messaging. And not just by a small margin, either: less than half the price for long distance and data! And while Fido charges 35 cents per daytime minute after a measly 350 mins, Wind just straight-up offers unlimited!

Well, Fido has been around for a while, so their network is probably more reliable. And I’m probably not going to talk all that much anyway… although I’ll definitely go over the 350. Maybe I’ll up my Fido plan from the $35 plan to the $60 plan.

Hmm, all that does is give me more daytime minutes… the long distance and data prices are still double that of Wind’s! Not exactly “Unparallel”…

Alright, let’s check out Bell:

Even worse. 200 weekday minutes??? And 15 cents per text message? I thought Wind was a rip-off at ten, yeesh. Wind wins this one handily, its not even close. What exactly were you lobbying for, StudentPhones? Higher prices?

Ok, how about Rogers:

Is this a joke? Sure, they upped the daytime minutes to Fido’s numbers, but kept the 15c text messages! On top of this, Rogers doesn’t offer a no contract option, or even a prepaid option! You have to sign a minimum one-year contract!

Just for fun, I went to the regular Rogers site to check out what their $35 plan (for non-students) includes – it is virtually identical. So again, StudentPhones - what the fuck are you offering here??? Where are the “unparallel savings”?!

Calling features… StudentPhones doesn’t mention calling features in any of their deals. Rogers offers one free feature with the $35 non-student plan, Bell offers free calling features for three months on all their regular plans… but by now it is a moot point, as Wind has blown them away in every possible category. But, not to be outdone, Wind offers caller ID, missed-call alerts, call forward, call conferencing, call waiting, call hold, all included in the $35 package!

Then there is their website. A slick, modern, friendly interface contrasts against the bland, boring, corporate sites that the big three offer up. Instead of complaint sections and pictures of people enjoying products, they offer a community forum! That’s right, the company offers a message board where people can post questions and answers – and even complaints! – about Wind’s services and products!

Did I mention that Wind offers the first month of any plan absolutely free?

On the down side, you don’t get a free phone with Wind, since there is no binding contract to ensure that the company will recoup the costs of the phone. However, Wind will be selling phones to their customers at cost, ensuring that they aren’t simply gouging people for the phones and then undercutting the competition on plan rates. And if you’re dim enough to believe that a free Blackberry Pearl makes the 3-year $75 a month Rogers contract worthwhile, then I’ve got a used Magic Bullet Food Processor to sell you – only nineteen easy payments of $9.99!

Of course, we still don’t know if Wind can back up their prices with solid performance. Maybe you won’t be able to get bars when you leave city limits, maybe they will add hidden fees on your bill, maybe their customer service will suck – only time will tell. But already, industry analysts are predicting that all carriers will sharply lower their prices in the new year and usher in a new era of much much more affordable wireless services… even cheaper than those offered by StudentPhones, believe it or not!!!

With the implementation of one simple common sense free market initiative, Tony Clement accomplished more in one day than StudentPhones did in eight years.

(Of course, considering the price comparisons above, we don’t think that StudentPhones really did anything, anyway…)

Way to go, Canadian Federation of Students. More lies, more deceit, more wasting of student money.

From the StudentPhones website:

We are working hard to ensure students always get the best wireless deals. Because paying more is evil.

Almost comical in its irony, isn’t it?

The next time a CFS rep tries to tell you that a big, bloated, CFS-sponsored lobbying firm can garner better results for you, so long as you pay them your student fees and don’t question their methods, remember this.

Mercola.com
December 16, 2009

The increasing use of sewage sludge as fertilizer for your food is an under-publicized and often hidden threat.

Sludge is the toxic mix that is created by our municipal wastewater treatment facilities. Just about anything that is flushed down toilets or that ends up in sewers is in this sludge; the pollutants in sludge come not just from household sewage, but also from every hospital, industrial plant, and stormwater drain.

For a long time, sludge was simply dumped in the oceans. Over time, it became apparent that this was an environmental and human health disaster. An alternative solution has been pushed since the 1980’s by the U.S. government. The EPA determined that a good way to dispose of treated sewage sludge was to legally distribute it as a cheap alternative to fertilizer.

Unsurprisingly, scientific analysis of the poisons in sewage sludge shows it’s the wrong, and dangerous, solution for U.S. farmers and communities. Unfortunately, many American farmers and gardeners are unknowingly using sludge-derived “compost,” which is given away free in many cities throughout the United States.

As a result, farms and homes across the country have been unknowingly spreading hazardous chemicals and heavy metals on their fields, lawns and gardens.

Meanwhile, Michael Mack, the chief executive of Syngenta, a Swiss agribusiness giant that makes pesticides, is waging war against the organic movement as a whole. He argues that, “Organic food is not only not better for the planet. It is categorically worse.”

“If the whole planet were to suddenly switch to organic farming tomorrow, it would be an ecological disaster,” he said. Pesticides, he argued, “have been proven safe and effective and absolutely not harmful to the environment or to humans.”
Of course, Mr. Mack dismissed the notion that Syngenta, a company that sold nearly $12-billion worth of “crop protection” technologies last year, felt threatened by the organic movement.

Dr. Mercola’s Comments:

If you’re looking for a compelling reason to switch to a primarily organic diet, the fact that it is free from sewage sludge fertilizers is a very good one. Sewage sludge, or “biosolids” — as they’re referred to with a PR spin — began being “recycled” into food crops when, ironically, it was realized that dumping them into rivers, lakes and bays was an environmental disaster.

Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that about 50 percent of all biosolids are recycled to land. This sludge is what’s leftover after sewage is treated and processed.

Your first thought may be the “yuck factor” of human waste being used to fertilize your food, but that is only the tip of the iceberg. Every time a paintbrush gets rinsed, an old bottle of medications flushed, or solvents are hosed off a factory floor, it ends up in the sewage system.

So it’s not surprising that a past analysis of sewage sludge by the Environmental Working Group found:

*Over 100 synthetic organic compounds including phthalates, toluene, and chlorobenzene
*Dioxins in sludge from 179 out of 208 systems (80%)
*42 different pesticides — at least one in almost every sample, with an average of almost 2 pesticides per survey sample
*Nine heavy metals, often at high concentrations

And it was sewage sludge that was partly blamed earlier this year for contaminating the White House lawn, and Michelle Obama’s organic vegetable garden, with lead.

This toxic sludge has been masterfully spun by PR masters into an acceptable, even “green,” fertilizer. Even San Francisco, arguably one of the “greenest” cities around, has been distributing toxic sewage sludge to homeowners and schoolyards and calling it “organic compost”! Nevermind that in 2008 its sludge was found to contain industrial chemicals, disinfectants, phenol, pesticides and solvents.

The Center for Food Safety (CFS) has recently petitioned San Francisco to stop this “compost” giveaway, lest it contaminate backyards and communities with toxic chemicals, but the sludge is still being widely used all across the United States.

If you want to get the real dirt on how this toxic sewage sludge has become such a popular fertilizer, I strongly encourage you to read Toxic Sludge is Good for You: Lies, Damn Lies and the Public Relations Industry. It’s written by Sheldon Rampton and John Stauber, the authors of one of my favorite exposes on the PR industry, Trust Us, We’re Experts, and does not disappoin

What is Going On With the State of Agriculture in the United States?

They say truth is stranger than fiction, and the once respectable business of farming in the United States is a perfect example of how true this statement can be.

Gone are the days when farmers grew food according to the laws of nature, with a deserved respect for the Earth and its resources. Nowadays, with the exception of the small but growing movement of organic and sustainable farmers, it may surprise you to learn that farming — once the symbol of all that’s natural and wholesome — creates some of the worst pollution in the United States.

That’s because most “farming” today is nothing like the small farming of our ancestors. The Farm Sanctuary points out that farm animals produce 130 times more waste than humans. And agricultural runoff is the primary reason why 60 percent of U.S. rivers and streams are polluted.

Meanwhile, in areas where animal agriculture is most concentrated (Iowa, Minnesota, North Carolina, Illinois and Indiana round out the top five states with the most factory-farm pollution) bacteria known as pfiesteria is common in waterways. Not only does pfiesteria kill fish, it also causes nausea, memory loss, fatigue and disorientation in people!

Aside from the pollution, factory farms use vast quantities of resources. According to FactoryFarm.org, industrial milking centers that use manure flush cleaning and automatic cow washing systems, go through as much as 150 gallons of water per cow per day!

Energy costs are even steeper.

A 2002 study from the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health found that industrial farms use an average of three calories of energy to create one calorie of food. Grain-fed beef is at the top of the list of offenders, using 35 calories of energy to produce one calorie of food! And this does not even take into account the energy used to process and transport the foods, so the real toll is even larger.

The Agribusiness Giants are Getting Out of Control!

On top of the environmental assaults, you have agribusiness executives like Michael Mack, the chief executive of pesticide manufacturer Syngenta, making outrageous statements like “Organic food is not only not better for the planet, it is categorically worse.”

What?!

His entire argument was based on the premise that organic farming takes up more land than non-organic farming for the same yield.

He obviously must have missed the recent study that examined a global dataset of 293 farming examples, which found that in developing countries organic systems produce 80% more than conventional farms. And a review of 286 projects in 57 countries found that farmers who used “resource-conserving” or ecological agriculture had increased agricultural productivity by an average of 79%!

“It is clear that ecological agriculture is productive and has the potential to meet food security needs … Moreover, ecological agricultural approaches allow farmers to improve local food production with low-cost, readily available technologies and inputs, without causing environmental damage,” Lim Li Ching, the study’s author, writes.

Really, the question we should be asking ourselves shouldn’t be ‘Can organic or sustainable farming feed the world?’, but ‘How can food production possibly continue as it is?’

When I hear someone extolling the virtues of “modern” agriculture and wondering how “organic” or “sustainable” farming could possibly be the solution, I maintain that the fact we have come to accept inefficient, industrial practices, including dousing our food with chemical fertilizers and pesticides, as a viable way to grow food is the real wonder.

And then I always look at the source, which in this case is a pesticide giant CEO … which makes his motives very clear, indeed.

How Can You Find Safe Food for Your Family?

There are still safe food options out there, but it does take a bit of digging to find them. Your local grocery store is generally NOT going to be the best source for healthy, fresh food.

So, short of starting your own sustainable farm (which you can do on a small-scale in your own backyard), you can find safe food options by supporting sustainable agriculture movements in your area.

Make it a point to only buy food from a source you know and trust, one that uses safe and non-toxic farming methods. This will do your health a major favor and support the small family farms in your area. You’ll receive nutritious food from a source that you can trust, and you’ll be supporting the honest work of a real family farm instead of an agri-business corporation.

It has been a three days since the cold front finally broke. When it did we got a couple inches of snow, not really all that much for around here. I expect a couple more snow storms before winter is done. This one only lasted a day this time which was very nice. Luckily behind the snow was a warm front and now it’s a balmy 50 degrees today, though it does come with the price of heavy rain showers. Such a huge change from our well below freezing temperatures less than a week ago, feels almost like spring! Here are a few pictures I took of the snow:

View from under our tarps.

The beauty of the snow.

The rest of this is just a quick update to my previous blog articles.

For almost the entire month of November both Jeremy and I had a really difficult time around here. I wrote about the crash in “Tides of the Storm” and “Ex nihilo”. It was probably one of the hardest months we have had since moving into this tent and very possibly the hardest in the last 2.5 years. November ended with me having one of the worst flu bugs I can ever remember having and Jeremy having a tooth extracted that had been abscessing for the last several weeks at least. But with the first week of December we both started feeling slowly better and getting our feet back under us solidly. We decided that a rest was much needed and are taking a month off of all detox inducing supplements so our bodies can heal and be ready for the next round.

I have written a few times of the animals we have around here in “A More Simplistic Life” and “Squirrels!” We still see our little Winter Wren friend and he has become much braver in the last couple months. Just a week ago he was hopping around and looking for a tasty bug to eat when he got some crazy notion in his head that the pill Jeremy was handing me must have been for him. Right as I grasped the capsule I suddenly see this little form dart from the corner of the tent and do a quick swoop past my hand. As he went by I felt his little feet grab my finger nearest the capsule and quickly let go as his momentum carried him onwards. What he was thinking, we will never know but it did provide for a nice bit of comedy.

Our squirrel friends (or annoyances as was the case for several months) have been quieting down as the winter progresses. Surprisingly we saw one just behind the tents digging in the snow on Sunday, looking for some maple seeds. I wouldn’t have expected to see them out on the one day of snow, but can’t argue instinct with something who’s vary life depends on it. Luckily they have been much quieter in the mornings and so we get to finally sleep as our circadian rhythms need. I think this is certainly one of the big things that is helping us to recover from our crash in late October and all of November.

Also, an update on our progress after the big doctor visit we had early October and written about in “Back from the Wizard”. We have been taking our b12 shots every three days, using the hormones as prescribed, and taking all the additional vitamins suggested (vit D, more C, more Selenium, and more CoQ10). I have changed several of the brands we used for our vitamins. Where monetarily possible we are now on food based vitamins which feel a lot better to be taking. I wasn’t sure if there was a real difference between food based and something developed fully in a lab. However, when I had the nasty stomach flu a few weeks ago I quickly felt the difference between the two types as the fully lab manufactured ones were not even able to be tolerated by my stomach for five days, while the food based ones caused no stomach trouble.

That affected a lot of my decisions when it came time to buy our vitamins the following week and I think I have us on substantially better vitamins now because of it. I also was disturbed to find a possible source of mercury ingestion in our fish oil, apparently at some point it changed from “free of mercury” to “lower than industry allowable limits.” Ack!!! We now take krill oil and it is worth every extra penny to know it will not be adding to the abundance of mercury we must deal with.

In small ways we are seeing the benefits of these changes. It is very likely that the crash we just went through was brought about by some of the readjusting going on in our bodies to the new therapies. Certainly the vitamin b12 shots (administered at home) would be a huge catalyst for change even if nothing else was. I have noticed some good changes in Jeremy as his hormone levels are going back to normal and some positive things as mine do as well.

Within two days of our doctor trip we also stopped eating all soy products, though I did just find a couple supplements that had some soy still in them. These are now gone too. We have stopped being vegetarians, something which was hard from me as I had been one for 12.5 years, but can feel a lot of benefit happening from now eating animal sources for protein. I think this is also responsible for some of the good changes taking place in us. Currently we are working towards a large change in diet and are excited to see what might happen once we have fully made the change. We feel better in small ways every meal we eat differently now, I have high hopes for what may occur when all meals are changed.

As for our house… well nothing seems to have come of all my efforts to find help finishing it and described in “To dream of a Home” and “Fate’s Quirky Sense of Timing.” One woman at the NW EcoBuilding Guild did seem receptive to talking about my situation but after hearing how bad things are she completely disappeared. It is unfortunate she couldn’t at least have been kind enough to say she couldn’t help, but to act as though we do not exist anymore is pretty ridiculous.

I also spoke with the president of the guild who upon learning that we were not paying members she immediately became very aloof and wanted nothing to do with us either. I had tried to explain that being almost completely housebound, on a fixed income with high out of pocket medical costs, and scrimping every cent we could to finishing building our house that it just hadn’t made much sense to pay monthly membership dues for meetings we would never be able to attend.

But it did not matter at all. Unless we had been paying for services we were too disabled to use even once in the four years we have been trying to build, she wanted nothing to do with us. If it were me, I would have looked at an opportunity to get us as new members and make a statement that it is an organization not just about recycling building products but about the people who live in the world we are claiming to want to save. I have to wonder who they are trying to save the planet for if not for the people who are in their community.

There are a few other exciting bits of life that have been going on around here but I will save those for later as they develop more fully. I am starting to finally feel like there is some progress being made from all the hard work we have been putting into life for the last four months since starting the climb back up out of the hole this summer’s crash left us in.

Ok, maybe this wasn’t such a quick update after all. Surprising to see how much has been happening when most of the last few months I often felt as though very little was going on. Small things have a way of adding up over time to much bigger things.

I get so excited when I finish teaching for the year.

Yay! No longer do I have to spend all my energy on working. No longer do I feel so tired that catching up with friends is … well, just too hard. No longer do I simply follow a trail between my bed, work, lounge, bed.

I can actually do stuff.

Like retail therapy! How much fun is that!!

And doing lunch or arvo tea!

Going out at night, seeing Christmas lights!

Sewing!

Only… the shopping brought back the aches. Though the new clothes significantly reduced the effect of these

Oh, and the night out meant I spent the next day huddled up in bed, snoozing and fretfully watching DVDs. A definite pyjama day.

And the eating out has meant two… or was it three? I can’t seem to keep track… days of stomach upset and extreme, shakey tiredness.

So much so that I almost… ALmost… wanted to go back to work.

But now, as the last of the toxins stick knives desultorily into my head, and I look forward to a day that will not be full of nanna naps, I am glad it is the holidays.

I might just need to remember the price I pay for any small indulgence. Sometimes it is worth it.

I had already completed my nutrition degree in London, more than 20 years ago, from the Institute of Optimum Nutrition in London, and had been practicing nutrition for some years, when I, of all people, came down with the dreaded Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis. (M.E. is the UK term for CFS). Imagine my shock, disbelief, and denial when I got the flu and never got better. It couldn’t happen to me, I was a nutritionist! I ate organic food, drank very little alcohol, I exercised, I took tons of nutritional supplements.

Over the next 7 years I tried everything. First of all, of course, came the orthodox physicians. I heard everything from “You’re hyperventilating, breathe out of a brown paper bag and you’ll be fine” to “Try to get some more rest- here is a prescription for tranquilizers and sleeping pills.“

I also tried, oh, so many alternative practitioners, who, while more caring people, couldn’t seem to help either. I would find a bit of improvement from herbs, a chiropractic adjustment, acupuncture, or whatever, but it would not hold, and I’d sink right back down. I sought out naturopaths, acupuncturists, Chinese herbalists, a chiropractor, a DO, massage therapy. I even tried hypnotherapy, in case I had somehow brought this all on myself and therefore my mind could undo it. Nothing was of much use, certainly nothing lasting. There was no reprieve from the never-ending headaches, body and muscle aches, and inexplicable, all consuming fatigue. Imagine you flew from L.A. to Bangkok, with the flu, and a hangover, and then add the sensation that you’ve drunk 5 cups of coffee so you can’t sleep. When you sleep, it is a light floating semi-sleep full of horrible dreams, and you wake up hundreds of times. You just hurt all over like someone has hit you with a baseball bat about 40 times, and you honestly wish you were dead. That’s Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

In the end it was homeopathy, to be exact a nosode remedy of the Coxsackie Virus that did it. I got worse for a week, then got better. A few weeks later I was 80%, and 6 months later, after attention to allergies, and adrenal exhaustion, I was back to normal. There was no pain, no foggy feeling in the head, no exhaustion, no swollen glands, no sore throat, no sore muscle points. I felt like the black and white TV of my life had suddenly been given a sharp new color tube. I was so incredibly impressed with homeopathy, and what it could do, from my own experience and others, that I began to study it myself to add to my practicing modality of nutrition

The truth is, no one in the world of homeopathy knows exactly how homeopathy works. But I have helped dozens of people with CFS to recover some or most of their health with a remedy similar to Coxsackie. It might be another flu virus, or Cytomegalovirus, or even the mononucleosis virus. This is not to say that I think everyone with CFS will recover this dramatically with the use of a viral nosode, but it certainly can be a part of the picture. Or at least a viral involvement must be eliminated as a cause.

As a fully recovered Chronic Fatigue Syndrome sufferer (a rare beast), I have a lot of experience to share, and a lot of understanding and compassion for all those suffering from various illnesses or symptoms. In the last 15 years I have worked with allergies, ADD/ADHD, children’s ear infections, menopausal and hornonal problems, tinnitus, meneire;s, depression, insomnia, and much more.

Oct. 8 (HealthDay News) – About two-thirds of patients with chronic fatigue syndrome sampled in a re

Oct. 8 (HealthDay News) –

About two-thirds of patients with chronic fatigue syndrome sampled in a recent study were infected with a retrovirus called XMRV. The finding, albeit preliminary, has raised hopes that there might be a concrete cause for the mysterious malady and thus, down the line, treatments for the disease. “This study does not prove that XMRV is the cause of chronic fatigue syndrome, however it does suggest it is a viable candidate for a cause,” said Robert H. Silverman, co-author of a report appearing online Oct. 8 in Science. “But if it can be proven that the virus causes the disease, that would be a breakthrough in diagnosing, combating and preventing the disease,” added Silverman, a professor of cancer biology at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute. “There could be an antiretroviral drug that could prevent this virus from replicating.”

Another expert was similarly hopeful. “This article could give a spark of hope, one, that chronic fatigue syndrome is caused by something, and two, if that bears out, maybe we could do something about it,” said Dr. Tamara Kuittinen, an emergency physician with Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

Chronic fatigue syndrome was first recognized in the late 1980s and initially dubbed the “yuppie flu,” resulting in an enduring credibility crisis.

Some segments of the medical community do not believe it is a discrete illness because there is no known cause, and diagnosis can only be made through excluding other conditions, such as depression.

“There’s no test, no clear etiology, the symptoms are vague, there’s no treatment and no cure,” said Kuittinen. “It’s very frustrating.”

Possible explanations for the disease have been far-reaching, ranging from different viruses, including Epstein-Barr, enteroviruses and herpes, to childhood trauma.

The illness affects an estimated 1 percent of people worldwide and, as its name implies, involves crippling fatigue as well as aching joints, headaches and various other symptoms.

Recently, XMRV was detected in prostate cancer patients and in prostate tumor biopsies. Like other retroviruses, it can activate latent viruses in the body, such as Epstein-Barr, which has been linked to chronic fatigue syndrome.

For this study, researchers analyzed 101 blood samples taken from patients with chronic fatigue syndrome and found the virus in 68 of the samples, as compared with only eight samples in 218 healthy patients (67 percent versus 3.7 percent).

Although 3.7 percent seems a small proportion, the authors do note that this could mean millions of people are infected with a virus whose effects are as yet unknown.

Retroviruses, a group that includes both XMRV and HIV, have genomes made of RNA instead of DNA.

“When the virus infects cells, the RNA gets copied into the DNA, then the DNA inserts itself or integrates into the host DNA,” explained Silverman. “One of the many problems with infections with retroviruses is that it’s very difficult to actually cure the patient because the virus DNA becomes part of the infected person’s DNA. Patients need to continually take drugs to keep it from replicating.”

XMRV is simpler than HIV, though, Silverman added, which is a good thing. “It’s a kind of stripped down version of a retrovirus. It has just the genes required for infection and replication. We could probably stop it with an antiretroviral drug.”

There’s also the possibility that a vaccine would prevent people from being infected in the first place.

But, stressed Silverman, “there are lots of qualifiers because it hasn’t actually been proven that it causes disease, although the evidence looks pretty intriguing. This is an area that needs more research.”

When dealing with chronic illness like arthritis, especially when you are in pain, it can be hard to

When dealing with chronic illness like arthritis, especially when you are in pain, it can be hard to maintain a positive attitude. Sometimes, with certain diagnoses, it may seem impossible to find hope or remain optimistic. However, as we’ve mentioned in past blogs, “Food For Thought: The Power of Positive Thinking”, and “ “Turning Negatives Into Positives”, thinking positively, even in a negative situation, can not only make you feel better emotionally, but can also benefit your physical health!

In fact, there have been studies that show that positive people are more healthy than negative people, and there have also been studies that supposedly prove that the “mind over matter” theory truly exists. Can our thoughts heal?

No doctor will write you a prescription for a dose of laughter or a bottle of smiles, but, most will recommend practicing an overall lifestyle of wellness — and this includes thinking positively, and doing things that make you happy — especially since depression is often a comorbidity with diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and/or fibromyalgia. In some cases, the cause is physiological – some autoimmune diseases cause an imbalance of certain chemicals in the brain; in other cases, the cause is emotional – patients may feel down and depressed about their diseases. (This is why we think that having support from loved ones — whether in person or via an online community, is so important!)

It may sound like baloney to some of you. I know when I am having a “bad” day, that it is easy to scoff at people who tell me to “stay positive” and “keep smiling” — I tell you, it’s easier said than done! That being said, I do know that there is, however, validity in their points. After all, no one wants to be around a Debbie Downer all the time, and being happy does make you feel so much better…if not physically, than at least emotionally and spiritually! Today I woke up feeling badly - it seemed that all of my physical ails were bothering me at once. I had a can’t-face-the-world, “how can I keep living like this”, BUMMER kind of morning. However, as I sipped my tea, dog snoring at my feet, birds chirping in the other room, doing work I love, in a beautiful home in all of it’s holiday bliss, knowing that I have a wonderful support system of friends, family, and loved ones – I felt supremely blessed, health issues aside. In fact, reveling in all that was GOOD, thinking about the many wonderful things and people in my life, doing a job that I love that at times helps others, made my health issues a NON-issue. Sometimes, all it takes is to look at things from a different perspective! Instead of moping around, dwelling on your sickness and wondering “why me”, take a step back and wonder, why NOT you? Bad things happen to all of us. You can handle it!

The good news is, there are many medical treatment options out there that you can try, whether traditional or naturopathic. There is a whole world of nutritious food, and helpful websites, and positive people to help you keep pushing on! They say that you can heal yourself with your thoughts, so why not give it a try?

You may be wondering who “they” are. Here are just a few examples that I’d like to share – before I begin, I’m not saying that a positive attitude will “cure” you. Being optimistic, in almost all cases, is not going to allow you to give up your meds or never set foot in a doctor’s office again, but, it will make you happier in general, which could potentially lead to better health, and will definitely lead to a better overall outlook. Besides, they say that positivity and happy thoughts are good for the human collective conscience as a whole. And isn’t THAT a worthy goal?

Here’s who “they” are…

* Louise Hay - Louise Hay, author of “You Can Heal Your Life” and “You Can Heal Your Body”, among many other books, is one of the pioneers of the mind-body link, and claims that she healed her cancer through the power of positive thought and “thinking it away.” Through “affirmations”, she convinced herself that she was not sick…and she, somehow, was cured! In fact, she believes that there are MENTAL causes for PHYSICAL ailments. Regardless of what you believe, her story is an inspirational one!

* Deepak Chopra - Deepak Chopra encourages overall well-being through physical and emotional wellness, spiritual health, and guided meditation. He is a world-renowned leader in the field of mind-body healing, and has held world leaders and international celebrities among his clientele. He has authored more than 55 books and believes that we hold the key to our own well-being. He is certified as a traditional MD but is more engaged in “alternative” medical practices. He encourages a clean lifestyle in all ways and is known for his theories on shared human consciousness and positive thinking starting with one’s self.

* Marilyn Mandala Schlitz - Marilyn Sclitz, PhD, is at the forefront of Noetic Science, a new field that has been brought to light in the book, the Da Vinci Code. Marilyn, who heads up IONS, has “pioneered clinical and field-based research in the area of human transformation and healing.” She has authored books on “mind-body medicine” and has helped to perform scientific experiments on healing and is bridging the gap between medicine and spirituality. Schlitz is “a leader in the area of consciousness research. She has conducted basic science research on the powers of the mind, including remote viewing, mind over matter, and distant intention and healing. She has engaged in clinical studies of consciousness healing and is currently completing a National Institutes of Health (NIH, part of the Department of Health) sponsored study looking at the power of compassionate intention on wound healing in woman undergoing reconstructive surgery.”

Whether you “believe” any of this or not, it is compelling information to take a look at! It doesn’t matter what religion, faith, or creed you practice, if any….it is about using your mind and soul to aid in healing your body. We are not encouraging or pushing any viewpoint, but just putting it out there…

I look at it this way — it couldn’t hurt! With the holidays approaching, there is no better time to think positive and to get in the “jolly” spirit! Why not start today with leading your health into a positive direction? I’m going to!

Let me know your thoughts – how does being positive/optimistic help you? Have you ever “healed” an ailment through thoughts or know anyone for whom these types of things have worked? I know people who have been healed in a near-fatal situation by an Indian stone, people who have willed cancer to leave their system, and (this is just in my case, not preaching to anyone!) have seen prayer work wonders. I know from personal experience that trying to be happy in light of it all is the best weapon against disease! After all, being negative and dwelling on it isn’t going to help matters much – so making a conscious effort to stay optimistic, hopeful, and positive cannot hurt! It can only help. Why not give it a try? You can think yourself healthy!

Thanks for reading, and be well! And please, stay tuned for my next entry in Ashley’s Journey to Wellness.

Welcome everyone to our weekly Friday special – The loony lefty BONER of the week! Every single Friday we open up the archives and bring you the most hilarious, yet excruciatingly painful, examples of leftist idiocy to be found on Canadian campuses.

This week’s Boner award goes to: Progressive Students 4 CFS!

bon-er [boh-ner]
–noun
a foolish and obvious blunder; stupid mistake.

Yeah yeah, I know what you’re thinking: “Come on, TBYS, are you going to turn every single fake document, fake twitter account, fake blog, fake petition, and fake movement into a Boner of the Week? Why not just get it all over with at once and make the CFS a Boner of the Week?”

Well, what can we say… its more fun this way.

Plus, Progressive Students for CFS is a laughable attempt at a third party dummy blog – even by CFS standards.

It popped up in early November, likely in anticipation of the CFS AGM, as an attempt to rally the CFS behind… the CFS. It uses a crappy blogspot template, green colours, and a posturized image of some young “activists” posing in solidarity with one another, screaming into megaphones. Revolutionaries, I tell you. Revolutionaries! Viva Ché!

The blog has only made two posts: one on November 3 (an article from another website) and one on November 11 (a letter to students asking for signatures). Their creativity knows no bounds.

[I'd just like to note here, that even looking at this blog makes me literally 'lol']

It doesn’t allow comments on the posts – the CFS loves to boast that it represents over half a million students across the country, but it hates it when they voice their annoying little opinions that go against what The Motherland dictates.

Luckily for us, they started a Facebook group too!

Both the blog and the Facebook group are quick to state in their respective descriptions: “We are not affiliated with the CFS”.

Why no, of course not!! I mean, they probably did cover their asses – I’m sure the blog is registered in the name of some student union leaders brother, or some poor lefty sap who actually believes in the CFS that they roped into doing it for them, so that on paper, technically, the blog really isn’t “affiliated” with the CFS – but it is crystal motherfucking clear who is behind this “movement”. To even suggest that this is a a legitimate third party effort with no affiliation to the CFS is so absurdly asinine that I can’t even think of enough descriptive adjectives to accurately describe it.

First off, there is the hard evidence.

On the blog, they have a list of ’signatures’ on their letter of support for abortions and Palestine and a bunch of other far left ideals that are fully embraced by the CFS. An observant member of the Facebook group, Veronique Decarre, noted that the signatures appearing on this blog that is “not affiliated with the CFS” all seem to have, um, something in common:

First off, what do you mean by trying to call this website “unaffiliated from the CFS”? I spent five minutes on google and I found the following:

Melanee Thomas Graduate Representative on the CFS National Executive
Mikael Jensen CFS-BC Campaigns Director,
Sandy Hudson CFS-O Women’s Rep
Gilary Massa CFS-O Constituency Coordinator
Sara Suliman CFS-O Executive
Liana Salvador CFS-O Executive
Bobby Chavarie CFS BC Skills Workshop Organizer (UBC)
Alex Kerner CFS Elections Campaigner (UofT, Ryerson, York)
Rick Telfer CFS Campaigner: 2008 “War Plan”
Alexandra Dodger CFS Campaigner: 2008 “War Plan”
Emily Shelton CFS Campaigner: 2008 “War Plan”
Natalie Bocking CFS Campaigner: 2008 “War Plan”
Andrew Brett CFS Campaigner: 2008 “War Plan”
Nila Zameni CFS Campaigner: 2009 Ottawa Affiliation

That’s almost a third of the petition’s signatories, and I spent less time looking than it takes to order a coffee.

Say what you will, this is astro-turf, plain and simple – the CFS trying to fake a groundswell of support.

Heh, “oops!”

Secondly, there is the sheer transparency of the blog’s purpose.

There are thousands of students across the country who would support Palestine, abortions, low tuition, blah blah blah. Some of them are probably even motivated enough to spend five minutes making a blog / Facebook group. Now hypothetically speaking, if a group of such students decided to do so, would they:

a) Make a group shooting for a defined goal, or supporting a defined cause that they are passionate about?

or

b) Decide to invest time and energy into supporting an utter failure of an organization that they have absolutely no ties to, and trust that said organization is going to get the job done?

And of course, the CFS “just happens!” to support the same exact goals of this group of people that is “not affiliated with the CFS”. Right.

Only the CFS could create such a hysterically bad product: a third party blog made up of people that are “not affiliated with the CFS”, who created a petition signed by nothing but executive members of the CFS, whose members all really really really strongly believe that the CFS is absolutely essential to the ’student movement’, and that CFS talking points are worth repeating at length in their “open letter” that is written by people that are “not affiliated with the CFS”.

Yuh huh.

In their attempts to fool people into believing that there is a massive groundswell of support for the CFS, Progressive Students 4 CFS has likely turned off many people who may have previously supported the CFS. That certainly seems to be the case on it’s Facebook group, where every update they post is rebutted with many well-thought out questions and criticisms. Of course the only reply they ever offer is the usual: a layer of CFS talking points brushed with accusations that anyone who questions them is a member of a larger Conservative conspiracy to undermine the people’s revolution – er, sorry, the “student movement”.

Of course, a huge amount of the criticism the group is getting – I would even venture as far as to say most of it – is coming from the left. Do these pinheaded jackasses actually believe that their anti-conservative fear tactics are going to work forever?

As Lincoln said, “You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.”

The CFS appears to be completely tone-deaf to such thoughts, as they refuse to acknowledge that their own members are demanding change. When people wanted to work with the CFS rather than destroy it by proposing some changes that would make it more democratic and fair at the recent AGM, the CFS scoffed and declared it to be – you guessed it – a right wing reform package.

Nice going, dumbasses.

For its blatant misrepresentation and total disregard for the actual will of the students, Progressive Students 4 CFS is a huge FAIL, and is also this week’s recipient of the BONER of the Week Award!

Congrats, guys!

Stay tuned! Every Friday we will be opening up the history books and reporting on another outrageous case of leftist idiocy by dishing out another Boner award!
