I was going through new avatars to use on the HikiCulture forums on a near-daily basis without finding feeling full contentment with any of the ones I had used; today though, I found the perfect one:

I had thought about Final Fantasy whilst daydreaming today; I think it's because I long to play another game from the series. While thinking about Final Fantasy (which I am extremely fond of), I thought of Moogles (the name of the creature from Final Fantasy that is in my avatar.)

I decided to add my HikiCulture user-name "Chair" to the bottom-right corner of the avatar to make it somewhat more unique. The typeface I used for "Chair" is the same font and shade of blue (partially) that I had used for the HikiCulture logo.

My new avatar finally makes me feel contentment.

We have a chair that’s bleeding. Each time I walk past it, I remember my Medieval lit classes

We have a chair that’s bleeding.

Each time I walk past it, I remember my Medieval lit classes where we read of statues or religious icons that would upon occasion spontaneously start hemorrhaging. These seemingly miraculous events would increase the tourist trade in small villages throughout early Europe. Flocks of pilgrims would pack up their bags and take off on foot, traveling long and arduous journeys to go and stare in wonder and awe, and if lucky, to come home with a tiny relic or tee shirt as a souvenir. The villagers were often extremely proud of their bleeding statue for it was a significant money-maker for the village or church that owned it.

Unfortunately, we have no pilgrims knocking at our door, begging for a piece of kapok. If only I could invest the trail of chair stuffing that dots the living room carpet with the power to fill husbands everywhere with a love for furniture shopping. Women would journey far and wide to our apartment for a tiny piece of the chair’s stuffing. Ticket sales would land me on the cover of Forbes.

This chair was doomed from the start. I had just purchased and remodeled my first condo when I bought it. I filled my new space with lots of cool angles and shiny surfaces of glass and mirror–obviously this was my pre-DH period. In fact, I overheard the delivery men laughing as they delivered my dining table. “She obviously doesn’t have kids living here.” His partner quipped, “Or a man.” I didn’t care. Form and style are supposed to be a single girl’s hallmark.

Form and style are like those super cool pals who show up at 2 in the afternoon bearing bottles of champagne. You know nothing good can come of this, but at least it’s going to be a lot of fun, and in this case, pretty. I found a postmodern table that deconstructed the whole notion of what defined a dining table; namely, function. My new table consisted of a thin sheet of clear glass that rested on two clear glass sawhorses…practical? Functional?

Hardly, but the table was totally amazing to look at. It reminded me of a sleek fashion model. Unfortunately, I soon discovered how high maintenance that chick was. She turned the seemingly simple everyday occurrence of sitting down to eat a bowl of cereal into a nightmare. Any meal or snack ended with 45 minutes spent with a cloth and a bottle of glass cleaner, to furiously attack smudges. And just like some severely underweight but elegant super models, the table was more than a little unstable. The sheet of glass precariously shifted whenever more than one person sat or walked past it. I quickly developed the habit of eating at the kitchen sink while looking over to admire the table.

Before I got married, Function was that poor second cousin who lived out in the country. The second cousin who was rarely invited to come visit, except for holiday dinners, and only then, because in your heart of hearts, you felt sorry for his lack of vision.

Clearly, Function had gone back home to his well-stocked and sturdy cabin when I bought the now bleeding chair. Like my super model dining table, this chair could have easily posed for the cover of Architectural Digest, or one of those spiffy Italian design journals. You know the ones with pictures of kitchens or bedrooms that never see children, cats or straight men. Unfortunately, at least for the chair, I soon acquired two of the three, a straight man and cats.

The chair, I hate to admit, was doomed from the start. Its fatal beauty is what lead to its early death. Now, ff you look closely at the remaining upholstery, you can see that it still has hint of glam from its subtle shimmer of deep bronze raw silk from Thailand. When I saw the chair in the show room, it was love at first sight. I wanted to hug it. I later learned that doing so, as would sitting on it, would be a bad thing. Raw silk stains with dizzying speed. I would have a series of mini-strokes when friends would plop down, a glass of red wine or box of chocolates or anything edible propped on their lap. One hand would instinctively clutch my chest while the other would reach for the fabric cleaner —I soon stopped buying anything but bottled water to serve guests. But stains were the least of my worries.

Patrick, our big fluffy one, is a Birman, a breed that can be traced back to ancient Siam, present day Thailand. I had no idea the silk chair would make him homesick. Our other cat, Bongo is a tabby with street smarts and a sense of cocky arrogance. While Patrick is more demure, choosing to shred when humans are well out of screaming range, Bongo prefers an audience. With a quick glance to see if anyone is watching, and if satisfied by our turnout, Bongo will start shredding. Once his audience starts to shout, he runs and zips around behind the chair for an encore performance only to skitter out of the room with (I swear) a huge grin.

The chair could still do a cover shoot; just now it would be one of those covers for a grocery store tabloid depicting the horrid remains of someone who had met their untimely end by being mauled by a pack of wild beavers from outer space.

When I got married, Function left his cabin in the country and came to live with me and DH. In a fit of disgust, poor Form and Style have left for sunnier, if not sleeker vistas. At one time, I was convinced that a room had to say something to you upon entering. The décor should whisper, “The people who live here are cool”, or “These folk all mid-century warm and cozy.” Clearly, like whistles only dogs can hear; that voice is beyond the auditory range of most men, my DH chief among them. I put fingers in both ears to prevent what tales the chair says about us.

He’s content to push the chair up against the wall to hide the shreds. This just caused the cats to refocus and work on the front corners. DH even invested in nifty cat toy-festooned scratching posts that we line up to form a perimeter around the chair. These are merely warm up stations before they get to good stuff.

For poor DH, Form and Style are strangers to be avoided. They speak a strange language and laugh when he orders a coke at dinner. Ironically, DH will fuss over shirt seams that fail to match, he will move pieces of a carefully arranged table-scape of candles and bowls, to a jumbled heap on a bookshelf, in order to make room for his feet as he watches TV.

I blame Function for all of this. It’s not for lack of funds that the chair continues to bleed in the living room. DH just brought home a huge flat screen TV—Function and he agreed that it was time to replace the old model. Function convinced him that the new TV would work better with our cable system. Whereas, my complaints about the chair are simply aesthetic, harkening back to my old companions, Form and Style.

Not giving up, I have lately started to encourage the cats to finish the chair off—a mercy killing, as it were. When the final puff of kapok rolls across the carpet and a pile of shredded silk remains where the chair now sits, perhaps we will go shopping. I know it!

No recipe today! We ate like porkers—I can’t even think about food.

WELCOME TO THE BRAND NEW “PRODUCER’S CHAIR BLOG”, here on the Triceptus News Now Page. Make sure that you click on the SUBSCRIBE link in the right hand corner to get instant news and updates and new stories coming from Triceptus Studios, we love and cherish your support in our endeavors as we continue to persevere to being one of the premiere entertainment companies in the world.

We have been steadily busy with creating new music under the Triceptus Studios Music banner as we get ready to release our first EP – “TRICEPTUS STUDIOS PRESENTS: TRICITY VOL. I.” Needless to say, our distributor, Wiggens Music Group Worldwide (http://www.wmgw.net) is eagerly anticipating release this album, and us producing this album as we got many more projects in the works. That’s why you need to subscribe to this news blog and stay informed cause we are moving, man. Now, enough with the salutes – ACTION:

INTERVIEWS ARE HAPPENING

Triceptus Studios work is finally getting recognized by the local and regional media, to which we are simply ecstatic over our hard work paying off for this year. I never thought in my wildest dreams that I personally, would be the center of attention sometimes, or rather our company would be at the center of attention at times when we produce a program or project and people respond to it and other people promote it. We recently did an Interview with TTN-HD, who are a local podcasting company, spotlighting all of the up & coming artist in the Massachusetts Film & Entertainment community. Now, us being featured was a great shot in the arm. And I know I got a lil more work to do with my interviewing skills and for me, who doesn’t like being in the public eye a lot, it was a tall order. Laz critiqued me on it and said it was a bad interview, ‘to which’ I agree after seeing it. But as time goes on, we learn from our mistakes and we prosper in the long run. See what you think about this interview with the lovely – Princess Santiago of TTN-HD:

BACK UP YOUR WORK

We’re (or I, should say) am making this public because everyone makes mistakes and we are not oblivious to it. But earlier this week, one of our Hard Drives that contain our HD footage was corrupted, in which we have to put it in service in hopes of retrieving our data. Normally this wouldn’t be a problem, EXCEPT, we have an important deadline we have to make, and we DO NOT intend to miss it for anything, even if we have to spend a lil more to get the results we need. Which is why I want to stress to aspiring producers/directors/writors/editors/collaborators, and anyone in the creative process to just – BACK UP YOUR WORK. Every piece of it. Every nook, every cranny, just back it up. Trust me, headaches are not worth the trouble of making sure your work is safe and secure. Just back it up. Not sexually, but you know what I mean. BACK UP YOUR WORK.

THE MUSIC MAKING PROCESS

2009 has had a lot of gifts presented to the Studio, particularly myself, as I learned so much about who I am, and what I am capable of, I just don’t want to turn off the dial and slow down, cause I want more for this thing we have. Like any man woman or child, I love music, and music to me is the single most important communication and emotional tool ever created by mankind, for it can influence, it can change, it can make or break whatever it touches. Now when it comes to making music, I was a novice at first, trying to figure out what I wanted to do and why. I give Laz a lot of credit for helping me to stick with it knowing, it was something I wanted to do and accomplish, and at least try to be a modest beatmaker with a unique sound. When you try to make music, just LOOSE YOURSELF to what you are thinking, come up with a simple structure, and get crazy with it. The best part is going through the journey of music making rather than completing it. And it’s even better if you have someone along for the ride as well. Take it from me.

KEEP CHECKING OUT “FEEL”

FEEL was our first in studio music video, and it was the first video that featured me & Laz as recording artist. It’s a hot music video and trust me, we got plenty more where that came from. So check it out when you can. In fact – Check it out here:

BOSTON MUSIC AWARDS

Wednesday December 2nd 2009, I will be at the Boston Music Awards and showing love to our fellow artists and promoting our work. We will be there in full force letting everyone know what Triceptus Studios is all about. Just putting it out there.

Well that was our Producer’s Chair blog on a POST-Thanksgiving weekday. Make sure you guys leave a comment on our blog here and let us know what you think about it either on here or on our facebook fan page. We really appreciate your feedback on our projects. I’m Crosby Tatum…

The second to last book in the Chronicles of Narnia takes Eustace, known to readers of “The Vo

The second to last book in the Chronicles of Narnia takes Eustace, known to readers of “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” and his classmate Jill on a perilous quest. Prince Rilian, the son of King Caspian, has been missing for years and must be found before the king dies.

As most of the books in the Narnia series, this one also begins and ends in the prosaic world of England, more specifically in a “progressive” school (that the narrator openly derides) attended by Eustace. Eustace has definitely improved after his adventures in Narnia, and while he helps his schoolmate Jill escape from a gang of bullies, the two of them suddenly discover a door that leads into Narnia. The boy and the girl soon become separated, and Jill has to overcome her fears when she encounters a lion, who of course turns out to be Aslan. Aslan sends them to search for Prince Rilian, the only son of the now aged Caspian (as we know from previous books, time flows at a different rate in Narnia) and gives Jill certain instructions and clues, which she unfortunately will not always remember.

During their journey, the two are accompanied by another of Lewis’ memorable and odd characters, Puddleglum the Marshwiggle, who despite his innate pessimism turns out to be a true friend. They encounter the mysterious Lady of the Green Kirtle who directs them to the City of Giants. Let it just be mentioned that they are supposed to play a rather peculiar role at a great feast there…

In the last chapters of this heavily allegorical book, the protagonists descend into an underworld, meet Prince Rilian who has been obviously bewitched and have to overcome the danger of materialism when they are pressured to deny the existence of Aslan and the “overworld”. Only then can they reascend into Narnia.

“The Silver Chair” is not one of the best books in the Chronicles of Narnia. Readers of the other volumes will find certain events rather predictable. Eustace and Jill never become the rounded characters that Peter, Edmund, Susan and Lucy were. Only the strange Marshwiggle shows some of Lewis’ old creativity in creating odd and memorable creatures.

Pamela Bruce lives in Austin, TX. She is the owner of Love Beads Unlimited and sells the sterling silver and Swarovski crystal bead jewelry she designs and creates both in her Etsy shop (http://lovebeadsunlimited.etsy.com) and on her website (built with Netscape Composer) at [http://www.lovebeadsunlimited.com], where you can also download the free e-book “A Consumer’s Guide to Buying Bead Jewelry Online”.

We love a good exhibition at the mydeco office (even more so when they are accompanied by free wine). However, there is no alcoholic incentive needed for Design Real: the first show at the Serpentine Gallery devoted to contemporary design. Curated by Konstantin Grcic and designed in collaboration with Alex Rich and Jürg Lehni, the exhibition examines items which have a function in everyday life. And yes, before you ask the above image does fit into this category – it is simply a textile wall constructed from interconnected foam tiles. Nothing unusual about that at all.

2. Inhabitat: Dallas Hill-filled design wins Re:Vision Dallas competition

Hard to believe, but the television show Dallas was not always an accurate reflection of reality. The real city is not all high-glamour, sex and murder; in fact some areas of this gigantic metropolis might even be described as ‘run-down’. Not for long however, as the winner of Re:Vision Dallas – a competition to create a completely sustainable community in the downtown area of the city – was announced yesterday. The hillside design runs entirely on renewable energy, has vertical gardens and can grow its own food. Construction is due to begin in 2011.

3. Moco Loco: Springtime chair

This design is the brainchild of Frank Winnubust, who researched various types of springs (Frank is single) in order to create a chair that would provide optimum comfort. Notice the knitted covers on the top layer, which were added to stop the chair from looking quite so much like a torture device. Cosy.

Just about caught up with myself! Now just need to get a replacement Landy, complete with electric

Just about caught up with myself! Now just need to get a replacement Landy, complete with electric death chair for the unawares (only joking) and replenish my lesser used tools (like a tool bag for instance!) Finish off the dining chairs, small table and then it’s full speed ahead Christmas. May even do some logging soon, oh yes, must get a petrol/oil can for the saw.

Here’s the next project starting up:

Improvised long steamer.

I’m making a log hod (or tote as it’s called in the American steam bending book I’m using). I added the bag on the end of my normal steamer which was only made to take chair backs. It kind of worked but I think the end of the hod bows didn’t really get hot enough, even though they were in for an hour. Here are the two bows drying:

This one failed.

Always a danger, I think this one may be due to uneven thinning with the draw knife.

The fibres couldn’t bend enough on the outside and gave way:

This one’s better (not perfect, a knot has spoiled the top bend), but it will do as a prototype for testing use at home.

I’ve learnt from this though, proper extension to steamer needed, clear timber and thinner, more even work on the bow profile. I think I’ll change the riving out of the timber 90 degrees and see whether that improved the bending evenness.

Here’s the penultimate dining chair back I glued up yesterday in the woods

Today I’m finishing off #4 and sizing the side rungs for #5 above in the luxury of home – it’s a bit too muddy at the bodgery for weaving seats.

Important lessons learned during your education

For me the School has been a fantastic creative environment where I got the possibility and time to find out and develop my approach to design

Did you do anything prior to your education to strengthen your skills and to get into your school?

I went to Art School for one year to make my portfolio to get into The Danish Design School

Keywords for the visual design

Contrast and illusion

Prototype 2008

How is your work process when you design?

It´s depending on how much time I can spend and what kind of assignment it is. Normally I have an expression or a picture on my mind that I would like to achieve. I use pretty much time thinking, writing keywords and sketching before I actually do something that gives a visual or practical result. Next step is to see how the concept can be realized by drawing 3D-model, material research and involving people with the souch knowledge.

Which part of the process is the hardest for you to work through?

To make “big” decisions fast is not a favorite as well as feeling confused over to many options.

In your experience, are there specific skills that would be helpful to master?

Don´t get stressed up because it´s a final project. You have done successful projects before so of course this one will turn out great too. Just give it some extra power and focus. Talk to other people about your project to get advice and help but listen to yourself.

What are your strengths?

Critical but optimistic

Prototype 2008

What are your weaknesses?

Ambivalent

Do you turn to specific areas for inspiration in general?

It´s very different.

Any designers you find inspirational?

I get inspired from a lot of different designers and artists but I don´t have a particular favorite.

Is your work process based on a special approach towards design?

I want to be able to work wide and make interesting products with a long lifetime and quality.

Prototype 2008

Do you have a dream scenario for you and your design in the future?

To have my own company running well and to work with projects that I find interesting

Has it always been a dream to work with design?

Somehow yes. I didn´t knew exactly in which area but I think I knew that it should be something creative.

Why did you choose this specific specialization?

I like form and function
