She just doesn’t stop! The Story Siren does it all. She reads and reviews books, she posts blogging tips, she hosts great contests, and now she can add hosting great challenges to her list as well.

So, what is the 2010 Debut Author Challenge? Here is what The Story Siren has to say about it:

What is the 2010 Debut Author Challenge?

The objective is to read a set number of YA (Young Adult) or MG (Middle Grade) novels from debut authors published this year.* I’m going to challenge everyone to read at least 12 debut novels! I’m hoping to read at least 30! You don’t have to list your choices right away, but if you do feel free to change them throughout the year. I will also be focusing on mostly Young Adult novels.

Anyone can join, you don’t need a blog to participate. If you don’t have a blog you can always share your views by posting a review on Amazon.com/BarnesandNoble.com/
GoodReads/Shelfari, or any other bookish site.

The challenge will run from January 1, 2010- December 31, 2010. You can join at anytime!

* I would like to limit the novels to those released in 2010.

You’ll have to do all the research to make sure a novel meets the criteria for the challenge. I do have a few sites that can help with your search; 2010: A Book Odyssey, AuthorsNow & The Class of 2k10 (website to be launched).

More Challenge Guidelines:

novels must be read between the dates of January 1, 2010 – December 31, 2010 to count toward your challenge total. (this means if you’ve read a 2010 debut novel in 2009, it doesn’t count….. but!)

reviews posted in 2010 will count toward the monthly prize packs, even if you read the novel in 2009. Does that make sense? For example I’ve read debut author Jennifer Hubbard’s novel The Secret Year, in 2009. But I will not be posting my review until closer to its release date in 2010. So, even though it can’t be counted as one of my “challenge” books, I could still use its review for a prize pack entry.

please do list the 2010 debut novels you’ve already read in your challenge lists. That way other participants can find out about a book they might not have otherwise.

So, here is my list so far. I’ll add to it as time goes on:

1. I KISSED A ZOMBIE AND I LIKED IT by Adam Selzer

2. THE SECRET YEAR by Jennifer Hubbard

3. THE LINE by Teri Hall

4. BIRTHMARKED by Caragh M. O’Brien

5. THE BODY FINDER by Kimberly Derting

6. GUARDIAN OF THE DEAD by Karen Healey

7. THE NAUGHTY LIST by Suzanne Young

8. PARANORMALCY by Kiersten White

Here’s some more of my work history as promised.

Wimpy wasn’t so bad. I loved their hot dogs which the workers were proud to call ‘benders’. A classic breakfast consisted of fried eggs, bacon, fries and a bender. Now I had told Marcel, the restaurant manager that my previous experience was at McDonald’s. The way his eyes lit up made me realize that in his opinion taking this job was a step down the job hierarchy. He offered me the job on the spot. I was ecstatic. My only prior experience with McDonald’s was ordering food, to which the sales assistants would respond “Eat in or take away?” To prove my imaginary experience was in fact real I took to asking every customer at Wimpy “eat in or tale away?” That frustrated Marcel to no end as he got tired of telling me Wimpy was not McDonald’s, it was a “real” restaurant and most customers would eat in. I now see the illogicality of asking someone purchasing eggs, sausage and bacon if they wanted to take it away. Sorry Marcel!

McDonald’s. I actually worked here after Wimpy! At the interview I was given my uniform and told to begin work the next day. My classmate- Chris told me to apply because the hours were flexible, perfect for a student. I wonder where Chris is now? He was a truly sweet friend. On day one I arrived at work ready to get introduced to the fryers, cold rooms and so on. The manager showed me the staff room to get ready, it was at that point I realized that I forgot my uniform at home. 3 hours later I returned with my uniform and was told to mop the large golden arches just outside. I realized we had a problem there. What if any of my classmates saw me in that undignified position? Next I was introduced to the fryers. I was to fry half a bag of chicken nuggets, which I very quickly did. At McDonald’s you are not allowed to be idle even for a second. As there was nothing else to do I thought it would be nice to keep frying the nuggets. So I fried and I fried and I fried. It was no small commotion when a couple of the staff saw what I was doing and quickly alerted the manager. Apparently it was sacrilege to fry up to one bag at a time, I had fried more than two and now everything had to be thrown away because their policy is to serve “freshly prepared food”.

My McDonald’s job lasted one week. It was the mopping of the logo outside that did it. I just couldn’t.

By the way I now make all my sausages like benders! Works particularly well with hot-dogs. You make incisions at regular intervals across the length of the sausage and when you fry it, it bend into a ’C’ or an ‘O’, hence the name.

Thanks for reading!

I really love this quote. It is so true.

So, in an ongoing effort to get my mojo kick started, I was thrilled to see that Pals Paper Arts challenge this week was to make a KISS (keep it simple, sweetie) card. So, in essence, use stamps/ink/paper and limited embellishments.

I started with a Basic Black card base and layered it with Whisper White. To the left side I added a strip of Old Olive which I’d stamped with Itty Bitty Backgrounds.

Over the seam of the Old Olive cardstock, I added some 5/8″ Brocade Blue grosgrain. I tufted it a bit at the top and added a “genuine” brad from my Styled Silver HodgePodge Hardware.

On the far right, I stamped the peacock feather from Nature’s Nest. I inked it up with Brocade Blue ink then used my Old Olive and Basic Black markers to add various shades. I stamped the saying from Hope Happens in Basic Black.

This card is elegant in it’s simplicity. And, what’s more is that I came up with a bunch of ideas for upcoming projects while I was doing this one!

I sorta kinda met my Thanksgiving goal. I did very well to not eat seconds or stuff myself during Thanksgiving dinner.
After, however, is another story. Oh, boy, did I ever do terrible with the leftovers! I have no idea how much I ate, but I think if you rounded it, it would be about 10,500 calories. I will be lucky if I don’t gain everything I lost last week and then some. Well, start again fresh today!

It was, however, delicious. The most delicious Thanksgiving food I have ever had. I can redeem myself at Christmas! Next year, my goal will be to do well for the entire day (I had no idea it would make a difference). I am, however, completely dreading weigh-in tomorrow. I know it will be bad.

apocalex: Achievements (trophies, awards, medals, what have you) and subsequently “Gamerscore” or “Level” have lost their original meaning and become the mileage that gamers are putting on their platform’s odometer.

The first 360 game I played was a borrowed copy of Burnout: Revenge. I put the disc in, and after some fiddling around, I found the achievements page. Intrigued, I looked at the things I would have to do in order to get my gamerscore up. Some of them, the ones that awarded >50 points were extremely time consuming and/or difficult. In stark contrast, just a few years later in Burnout: Paradise; the over 50 point achievements can all be done by simply continuing to play the game. Achievements, in the traditional sense of the word, mean that you have accomplished something. Has this persisted in modern gaming culture? No, I don’t believe it has.

I thought about this topic for a while before writing on it; because I wondered exactly what I was advocating – a standardized or objective way to judge games? A sliding scale of difficulty for achievements? Different “tiers” of achievements? No. And yes, I suppose. The popularity of getting achievements is in direct correlation to the competitive nature of most gamers. The wild popularity that the 360 achievements received was in part because of this. As I hypothesized to soroboruo in another conversation: achievements, gaining levels, continuing to play certain games (MMO’s especially) are all about bragging rights, competitiveness, and simply showing off. Even among friends, there is a curious drive to be unique or stand out in some way. In Modern Warfare 2, the drive is to find the most elusive emblem and titles. This is one of the few progressive changes that MW2 has made over its predecessors; the ability to show off easier (however, the lack of lobby/gametype/web leaderboards is still quite retarded). You want to show off your stuff, your skills and ingame achievements. There is even a market (very niche) to WoW players to create actual physical figures of their online characters. However, back to MW2 as an example, even the in-game achievements (called accolades) have been doled out like medals at the Special Olympics. Every player receives one. Reloaded your weapon the most? Here’s your accolade. One truly remarkable is for team-killing, noted by soroboruo – yes, there is an actual ingame “achievement” for killing your teammates. However, Infinity Ward made the wise decision to limit their achievements to the single player campaign – and quite rightly so. The multiplayer aspect in achievements means that they are wildly variable in their difficulty. Everyone can help you get it, or everyone can do their damnedest to prevent you from getting it.

But every retail game on the 360 has about the same amount of available gamerscore attached to it. This is the essence of my mileage analogy. In my many years as a 360 gamer, I have only completed 1 or 2 games. I mean totally completed and exhausted all possible achievements. But my gamerscore still sits relatively low in comparison to others. This is not an indication of the difficulty of getting achievements in general, but personally I believe my real gamerscore should be even lower. Somewhere in single or double digits, not in the thousands or ten thousands. The seed of this post started long before the blog, when playing games I would scoff at some of them, completing tutorial levels; learning how to jump and look up and down were achievements with scores on par with doing something much more significant, for example 20 points to complete the tutorial level, 20 points for killing 100 enemies. These were not similar achievements, yet they have the same score attached. Gamerscore these days means just how much a gamer plays. You cannot delete games to reset your gamerscore (much like odometers) and in many respects the points are meaningless. In the MW2 example again, the multiplayer accolades are along the lines of “killing the most higher ranked players” or “killing the most lower ranked players”. When you consider that a low level player or high level player respectively entering a game will have a huge advantage in getting this accolade, then it becomes meaningless.

Should achievements be standardized? Can you truly compare the achievements possible in High School Musical 3: Senior Year DANCE! with a game like Fallout 3? In a way, I think yes. Playing a family friendly, easy game should simply not award achievements. For the simple fact that you are not playing that type of game in a competitive framework. Does gamerscore really matter to all but the most dedicated (and some would say, crazy)? There is a documentary movie called The King of Kong, that I would suggest to those wondering about gamers and their competitive natures.

I like the achievement system, I like that I can accomplish certain feats that are rather difficult and show that off. However, I think the system is not being used to full effect. I love unlocking those achievements that are clever or seem impossible – killing an enemy by jumping on it. Causing a 20 car pileup. Finishing a race backwards. These are witty and reward a player for doing something extraordinary outside of the “normal” way to play a game. But giving me points to complete your tutorial? Giving me points for buying your game? That’s no achievement. And it never will be.

“Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ….” 2 Corinthians 2:14

Who does not want to overcome their circumstances, situations, or life’s daily challenges? When faced with life’s uncertainties, we all want to have the hope and assurance of being victorious through them. The only guarantee you have of being successful and a winner in life over your circumstances is God. Why? Because He has said so! This is the confidence we have as we live our lives.

Thanks should be a continual daily language that is communicated to God our Father. Through the above passage of Scripture, God specifically wants us to know that because of what Jesus Christ did at the cross through the shedding of His Blood, we can be confident that we will always triumph. He wants us to know that we are overcomers of obstacles that try and overtake us daily.

This season of being thankful should find us continually thanking God for His love and goodness toward us. We have been given the assurance of triumph through each and every situation of life. It is truly the mercy and grace of God that He will always, not sometimes, cause us to be the victor!

ENCOURAGEMENT: God is the One that will cause you to overcome life’s challenges every time. This is because of what His Son Jesus did for you and me!

Thanks be to God today and all eternity!

During tough times such as now doing more with less has become the norm’ rather than the excep

During tough times such as now doing more with less has become the norm’ rather than the exception. Therefore, why should your social media strategy be any different. Many organizations are hesitant to allow workers to have access to social media applications at their work-stations even now amidst all the positive and compelling evidence of the amazing things being accomplished. This is due primarily to the fear that employees will become distracted by the inherent social factor, the farm town gifts, mafia wars, pokes, super pokes and redundant quizzes. However by cracking down it’s possible that they are missing prime opportunities to optimize their brand, content and social currency.

Employee Evolution claims that the best strategy is to make every employee a social media representative, a tool for furthering the needs of the organization rather than a weight around the neck used to slow momentum.

I tend to agree with this view point. By allowing employees to take part while on the clock, you are giving them ownership of the brand, creating a sense of pride and loyalty that will ultimately serve to benefit the organization. Want to convince your supervisor? Here are a few key points to remember when presenting the case for social media at work:

Empower by encouragement-Give a person ownership and you will create a sense of pride, empowering them and also helping to ensure that they will be good public representatives of the organization. If you have ownership then you feel loyalty towards the organization that creates that feeling. Simple right?

Make everyone an equal-This is a big one. Rather than getting caught up in silo-type thinking, allowing only either the top reps or the grunts to speak out, let everyone be on equal footing. This supports the first point about empowerment. Doing this helps to humanize an organization making them appear to be much friendlier and appealing to the public.

Build creativity while cutting costs-Allowing everyone to participate means that an entire collection of creative minds with different skill sets will be utilized rather than a select few. Creativity tends to stagnate if not poked occasionally with the big fork of distinction. You also save money by taking advantage of existing resources, and who doesn’t want to save money?

Do you work for a progressive organization? Share your story about how you engage with the public via social media at work. Is it working for your company? Or do the employees take advantage? If you are banned from using social media while on the clock, why do you think that is?

I wanted to start this blog post with a picture of what I ate today. I ate a piece of pumpkin pie, and it was so good, I even went back for seconds. I happened upon this cartoon, this piece of pie trying to daunt and scare us with his “veggieness” (o noes! mah pie has vegetables!) but I realized: if I were still sick, I’d actually be afraid of this pie. I used to be afraid of the number of calories in a meal. I used to obsess, and try to calculate how long it would take me to burn off a slice of cake, by exercise. And if I couldn’t do that, I’d fast. But I don’t do that anymore.

This Thanksgiving was a good one. We went to my aunt’s house upstate and arrived there (amazingly) with no traffic. I got mauled by four dogs, watched two movies (the crappy remake of “The Day the Earth Stood Still” and “Jaws”), helped prepare dinner and actually ate it too. And at dessert? I had been expecting cake, although I had forgotten on Thanksgiving you had pie, so I tried pumpkin pie for the first time. It was delicious! I was never a pie fan and I was glad to say it wasn’t a waste.

So right now? I’m feeling pretty good, and eating a bowl of apple sauce. Oh man, I love apple sauce… and heh, I actually added sugar to it. It’s all natural, a little low on the calories… so there you go! I had a great day without letting ED tell me to restrict and I’m making sure I’m getting all my calories in.

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving – or Thursday – and I will catch you all tomorrow! ¡Hasta mañana!

– Delilah

I feel amazing. Absolutely amazing! Today is Thanksgiving and it’s been a wonderful day from start to finish.

It’s an extremely powerful juxtaposition to last year’s Thanksgiving holiday. I was so raw emotionally from finding out that the supposed love of my life wanted out of our marriage, I felt as though I was walking around feeling like a combination of zombie, dumb-struck, sad, and well, raw. Looking back at that day, compared to today, if I could have fast-forwarded to today, at this very moment, I’m not sure if the “me” then would have felt hopeful, or scared shitless over what was to come over the course of the remainder of 2008 and 2009 to-date. I say that only because there have been a fair share of downs with the ups, and the road was long, windy, and at times, extreme.

Today, however, was awesome. I woke up bright and early for my very first 5-miler race with a bit of trepidation and anxiety (what can I say? I get “stage fright” before a race…worst fear being the last runner to cross the finish line!) but the race went off without a hitch. It was a gorgeous route, with scenic parks, the ocean, and the sun peeping through the fog. As I listened to some of my most motivating tunes, I got into the “zone” and began thinking of the year behind me. As each mile went by, I got a bit more emotional, treating those miles as the phases of the last year, the sadness melting into ambivalence, into happiness, and confidence. I finished the race in just under an hour – a bit slow, but I tend to run slower in race (and, I am a slow runner admittedly, but as a new runner, just starting in February, I think it was pretty respectable!), but was elated to birst across the finish line, feeling accomplished.

I headed up to Maine to see my grandparents and my mother and one of my sisters and my brother-in-law, and again, the juxtaposition with last year was evident. I felt great. Happy. NORMAL. Content. My grandparents were great, you could almost see that same feeling in their eyes (as well as my mom’s) and I felt proud. Of myself, and my life. At this very moment. MY life. I did this. I made it, and I’m so thankful. I couldn’t quite ask for much more right now. Thank you…to life.

***

Once the Chocolate-Packages were on their way to Cologne, I finished three more that I had prepared together with the others. A Mini-card was added as well, shown here in close-up as is the middle box from the first picture.

As there were not as many boxes as before, I had more fun making them and got to enjoy it more. Which is a good thing, as I plan on making even more to give to family and friends at christmas…

i’m not feeling well lately; since came back from kansai. owh, i forgot to update what i did there, isn’t it. let me update a little bit later; after i mumble about today’s things.

today, i went to lab; even i’m not feeling well @_@ but, i think it’s better for me to be at home; rest myself. hmm…i’d a bad feeling n uneasy since i didn’t make myself attending last week’s presentation. (-_-;) then, i went to lab; but didn’t do anything. try to figure out n carry out programming stuff, but didn’t perform well. >_< i was quite sleepy thou, even put the ipod’s earphone in my ears’ hole. i’m sorry to my lab-mates coz i can’t talk much today. even they said ‘bye’ to me, it’s quite hard for me to response back since my throat’s prob. my voice has become like ‘artist’s’..hahaha~ lolz.

that’s one story. dun want to offense much then. hope really tomorrow i can go to see the doctor =)

but, after the class, we; the meiji malaysian students organized the hari raya haji’s celebration. it’s quite relief coz thanx to the majlis, my fever’s recover a little bit even my throat dun. gee~ plus, thanx to the chefs 4 all tip top dishes ^^

okey, i’m going to tell about my weekend’s story, roughly; since i promised it on the beginning. ^_~

on friday; the day after i skipped my presentation, i went to universal studio japan a.k.a usj with zahir n mus’ab. ^_^ it’s really fun there; enjoyed all the attractions coz most of the attractions are performance, so not really tired to walk here n there.

the next day, we went to biwa lake; the largest lake in japan. we’d autumn gathering there for three days. it’s a different style program coz we’d enjoyed ourselves by watching movie, chatting, explorace etc n at the same time, we’d tried figuring out the moral n values from each tasks given. *wink* so, it’s not a boring motivation talks or whatever n i thanxful coz did make myself there n the important things is got some values for myself

on the last day in kansai; on monday, we went to kiyomizu-dera temple in kyoto b4 going back home at nite. it’s really nice seeing koyou (red leaves) at nite, plus at the temple; good view. but, it’s quite irritating coz many people on that day since it’s holiday in japan. on the way back to the station, we stopped at a stall; selling hatsubashi, one of famous kyoto’s delicacies. we’d chance to taste certain of them. ^^; really delicious. so, we’d bought some as omiyage (souvenirs).

on tuesday, my frenz n i went to omiya; to visit our frenz who involved in accident last month. X_X it’s quite relief to see them recovered a little bit. but, i think n sure it’s hard for them to face that kinda injuries. =( i really hope they’ll get recovered fully soon. (_ _)

anyway, wanna wish u’all happy eidul adha n may us be blessed by Him. so, let’s deepen our understanding towards the meaning of korban or sacrifice n adopt the values from it. =_=
