There’s a mini DJ collective out of Miami called Champion Sound comprised of the homie Sire Esquire, Mr. Brown and A-Train. They’re all purveyors of classic soul x hip-hop x funk and just put out their first podcast of sorts featuring really good old school and new school jams that make you feel good. They’re calling it Champion Sound Radio and it’s fire! They’ve got some Jackson 5 remixed by Kenny Dope, some Q-Tip and Mos Def, People Under the Stairs, and lot of other gems that will leave a smile on your face. You know how if you’re feeling sick, you can eat a bowl of pho and it will make you feel better. This mix has the same effect. You can stream the entire thing and download it over here.

Speaking of People Under the Stairs, has anybody seen their new video. This joint is so old school and hilarious that it hurts. Props to any hip-hoppers willing to throw on leisure suits and rock out.

Free warms it up, Joell gets the blood flowing, and Ali straight bludgeons the track.  The leaks off of Brother Ali’s fourth full-length album “US” have been a bit grandiose and self-righteous (I mean, he has a song on his upcoming album called “The Preacher”).  But for one song, at least, it seems he’s summoned some of that “Champion Sound,” not content to let a battle MC like Joell Ortiz outdo him on his own album.

We can all thank White Van Musician Jake One for linking Brother Ali with Freeway.  Throw Joell in the mix and you got chemistry.

Yet another banger from J Dilla off of the Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2 album, which I may remind you drops on September 8th. You may recall that the beat on this track was on the re-release of Jaylib, Champion Sound on the track “The Red”. I remember when I heard the beat initially (on the Jaylib album) and was kind of disappointed that Madlib had changed it. Either way you look at it, the beat does knock like crazy and these guys are dope as hell over it. Cappadonna’s verse is a little below average compared to Ghost Deini and The Chef, but it’s still a dope ass track.

Newsletters are an extremely powerful tool for musicians. Communicate with and engage the fans you already have – they deserve your attention and are hungry for information. Grow your fan base by making it easy and appealing to join your community.

If you have a large mailing list you should be using a paid service. You might be familiar with email marketing newsletter services like Constant Contact, Vertical Response, or newcomer Contactology. While some people have great results with these services, people in the music industry should consider using a music oriented service. Some great options to explore include: Fan Mail Marketing, Band Letter, Champion Sound, and Reverb Nation’s FanReach.

Once you’ve chosen which service to use and are staring at a blank template, you might be wondering what to include in your newsletter? How do you make yours stand out? Think carefully about your messaging and your tone. Make your newsletter a reflection of your (or your band’s) identity.

What to include in your newsletter:

- Any relevant news, i.e. tour schedule, album release dates, new music video, link to article mentioning your band etc.

- Something free – and exclusive – like an unreleased song or recording from a live show.

- Invite your fans to interact with you via things like remix competitions, voting on the title for your upcoming album, or submitting art for a band t-shirt.

- Remind fans to add you on MySpace, follow you on Twitter, and become a fan on Facebook (and provide the links).

- Multimedia. Use photos and video to make your newsletter more colorful and interesting.

- Unsubscribe link (any good email marketing service will include this).

Ok, so you’ve got a great design, great content and no one to send it to. Now what? How do you find more fans? How do you make them sign up for your mailing list?

How to grow and manage your mailing list:

- At every live show, have a clipboard with a newsletter sign-up list available. Sweeten the deal with a raffle at the end of the night, e.g. winner gets a copy of your CD.

- Make it easy and appealing to sign up for the newsletter online. The first thing a visitor to your website should notice is a place to sign up for the newsletter. Incentivize them by offering a free download, exclusive track etc.

- Include an automatic thank you page that welcomes each new subscriber.

- Include a link to sign up for your mailing list in your email signature.

- Make it easy to share. Include links or buttons to forward to a friend, share on facebook, share on twitter etc.

Other guidelines:

- Don’t send out a newsletter more than once a month. It’s annoying.

- Get personal. You are a band (or musician) not just a brand. Your fans want to know about the intimate details of your day-to-day.

- Keep the design and content clean and basic. You don’t want your newsletter looking like a pimped out MySpace profile from 2005.

- Be consistent and be patient. Send out a concise yet engaging newsletter once a month and watch your community slowly take on a life of its own.

- Analyze your metrics. Learn from them. Make improvements and adjustments as necessary.

Of course, if your mailing list/fan base is not large enough yet to justify spending the money on a paid service, you can send out newsletters as bulk emails instead. Just BE SURE to put email addresses in the bcc field and give readers the option to unsubscribe (this is usually done by asking them to respond with an email with the word “unsubscribe” in the subject line).

Remember that building a mailing list takes time and patience, but it’s worth every minute. Think of every email address as a real live member of your music community. You want to treat them with the respect they deserve (no spamming), keep them entertained and engaged, and turn them into loyal fans.

I must say, I have a shared point of view when it comes to this Branding. No offense to FreshJive, Stussy, or whoever. LOL

Another fun and fresh music video directed by Steve Glashier featuring a Fatboy Slim cut, the vocals on the track are Lateef the Truth Sayer. I like that it is not overproduced like a lot of mainstream music videos. It just relies on concept and attitude and not an overblown budget featuring whips, bling, lighting and boats.

The track is also kind of a tribute to seminal DnB classic Champion Sound by Q Project. Boh!

So remember what I said about no more music this year? Yeah, that wasn’t true.  What I actually meant (hey! I’m serious!) was that I’m not going to review any more current music until the year-end list is done.  What is making that harder is my curiosity.  I’m having a hard time with sticking to review.

Last night I went on a downloading binge (legal, if anyone asks, I guess), focusing on Madlib and J Dilla, two hip hop producers that got hot around the mid- to late-90’s, and started making their own music in the early 2000’s for the most part.  Their production is really interesting and a joy to discover, but they collaborated once before J Dilla died of a rare blood disease in 2006.  That collaboritive team was called Jaylib (get it?) and they released one album in 2003, titled Champion Sound, bred from each of them rapping over each other’s beats.  That album has become my favorite hip hop album of all time in the space of hearing it twice over the past two days.

When it comes to hip hop, I guess I cheat a little bit when it comes to how I approach listening to the music.  Because my primary interest in music is rock and things resembling it, I tend to take a step back when listening to something and try to take in as much as possible.  Most of my “effort” with listening comes from trying to absorb the piece as a whole (probably the reason why I like complicated music like Animal Collective, but have a harder time with noise and stuff).  As a result, I have to really concentrate hard to listen to the lyrics of something unless they’re really prominent.  Which means that when I listen to hip hop, I get more preoccupied with production than most.  That’s why I love Spank Rock so much – it’s so interestingly put together.  And that’s why I love J Dilla and Madlib so much.

Which is why Jaylib is mindblowingly good to me.  Now, reviewing hip hop is almost as much of a challenge for me as reviewing things like dubstep – it makes me insecure not being tapped into the greater culture, because I fear having some guy who’s like, “I know hip hop, and you’re a stupid asshole.” I know that would probably never happen, but then again, that’s why it’s an insecurity.  But the way I see it, having a visionary producer rapping means that that rap has a finely tuned ear for how to flow with the production.  As I noticed (and as was pointed out to me by some other reviews I read), the lyrics here aren’t all that deep or all that interesting – they’re fun, but pretty shallow, not dumb, but not at all contemplative or declarative either (except as far as declarations of Jaylib’s prowess or simply, their new existence).  But their production.  Oh, their production.

It’s not exactly like nothing I’ve ever heard (it seems to take influence from instrumental hip hop producers, most notably [and most famous] DJ Shadow), it’s put together so interestingly that it’s this whole new animal when combined with the vocals.  It’s just, music.  It’s hip hop by every defining definition, but if you’re someone who’s heard too much absolute shit blasted at you by top-40 stations and mixtape rappers who have great rhymes but couldn’t care less what it’s over, it doesn’t sound like hip hop.  It sounds like something too fully formed.

The whole album has this laid back, but still energized vibe to it that’s really engaging for me, and it’s really conducive to full-album listening.  When your production is good enough, your only worry is overloading the listeners, and they do a great job of not doing much.  But their first proper track, after cool intro “L.A. to Detroit” (each of their hometowns), is “McNasty Filth” (cool name, right?), and it blew me away entirely.  They loaded so much into it and it’s not fast-paced, but extraordinarily high-energy.  It’s definitely a statement track – the duo saying that they are a force to be reckoned with.

Some other highlights are “The Heist” and “The Mission,” back to back, and for the same reason – their ability to keep downtempo hip hop interesting and fresh is absolutely astounding to me.  But really, after “McNasty Filth”, Champion Sound tends to maintain about the same level of laid-back awesomeness.  And that’s good enough for me.  Honestly, this is the best thing I’ve heard all year, and I’m seriously considering putting it in my all-time top 20, but I feel like it would kind of decrease the stature of the list if something could break into it after two days.  I’ll wait a while with it.

Dubmatix’s new album Renegade Rockers offers some true gems with classic dancehall don Pinchers and rocksteady veteran Alton Ellis laying down superb tracks with the Canadian dubmaster. Lining up sensational reggae vocalist like Willi Williams, Linval Thompson, and Ranking Joe, Dubmatix has produced dynamite soundscapes to be played loudly in the hot Texas heat.

Hayes Carll’s “She Left for Jesus” from his new album Trouble in Mind is the best country song of the year if not the decade. Witty, humorous, and delightfully sounding Hayes Carll embodies the best of roots music.

VP’s Reggae Gold 2008 compiled some of the hottest reggae coming out of the Caribbean, including Mavado, Beenie Man, Bugle, Richie Spice, and Collie Buddz. Syren Hall’s “Sombody Come Get Me” and Tarrus Riley’s “Ease Off” play like smooth roots reggae. The compilation contains burning dancehall anthems, such as Stephen Marley and Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley’s “The Mission.” YT’s “Champion Sound” kills the competition, dropping bombs and crazy bass.

For a trek across New Mexico and Arizona and onto the old casinos of downtown Las Vegas, the sounds of Joe Ely and Joel Guzman’s new album Live Cactus framed a passing desert landscape. And where eventually the desert plain gave way to mad rapids on the swollen Colorado River rampaging down the truly grand canyons of the American Southwest.

Wie beim letzten Mal werden von 22.00 – 03.00 alle Ragga, Dancehall Lover auf ihre Kosten kommen. Für die richtigen Vibes sorgt diesmal Boombastic Sound aus Bremen. In Bremen ist das Soundsystem um die beiden Selecta Timebomb und Crazy A. seit Jahren ein fester Bestandteil der Reggae Gemeinde. Timebomb alias Dirk Schieman betreibt seit Jahren den Boombastic Recordstore und Bremens beliebten Ting Club.

Gegen 02.00 beginnt der Mainact des Abends TOP CAT mit seiner Show aus Ragga-Jungle, Dancehall und Drum & Bass. Ab 03.00 Uhr stoßen dann unseren Resident’s DJ Diaz-Soto & MC Soultrain aus Berlin dazu und werden bis in die frühen Morgenstunden mit euch feiern.

Das die Traum GmbH für hochkarätige Drum&Bass Bookings und brechendvolle Reggae-Ragga-Dancehall Partys sorgt, dürfte mittlerweile für die Meisten in Kiel keine Neuigkeit mehr sein. Nun setzten wir aber am Samstag den 28. April noch einen drauf. DJ Diaz-Soto, der in den letzten 3 Jahren immer wieder für frischen Wind im Kieler Orange Club gesorgt hat und für eine Reihe hervorragender Events verantwortlich ist, präsentiert das absolutes Highlight für alle Ragga-Jungle-Drum and Bass-Dancehall-Enthusiasten!

Daddy Freddy (The Fastes Rapper in the World, London) – ohne Frage eine lebende Legende und Founder des Raggamuffin Style. Daddy Freddy wuchs in Trenchtown Kinston Jamaika auf, dem Zuhause vieler musikalischer Legenden, in der Nachbarschaft Jacob Millers. Aus seinem ersten Album “Body Lasher” (späte 70er) wurden auf Jamaika insgesamt sechs Top Ten-Singels ausgekoppelt. Freddy zog nach England und unterschrieb bei Music of Life und produzierte mit Asher D. 1988 das bahnbrechende Raggamuffin Hip Hop Album. Eine Verschmelzung aus Dancehall, Raggae und Hip Hop. Das Album schlug nicht nur in Großbritannien ein wie eine Bombe. Damit hatte Freddy schon Ende der 80er einen neuen Style mitinitiiert und zur Jahrtausendwende einen Höhepunkt nach dem anderen erlebt. Das 92er Album „Raggamuffin Soldier” war auch in den USA sehr erfolgreich und so arbeitete er mit Leuten wie Led Zeppelin (Ragga Rock, Top 50 US. Billboard) Melissa Morgan (Through the Tears, Top 10) Cypress Hill, Dr. Dre, Franky Paul, Norman Cook aka Fatboy Flim, Prodigy, Salt’n'Pepa oder KRS One zusammen. Das unterstreicht noch mal wie vielseitig dieser Ausnahme-Vocalists ist. Nicht genug überbot Daddy Freddy schon 4mal seinen eigenen Guinness Buch der Rekorde – Eintrag als schnellster Rapper der Welt. Seinen aktuellen Rekord von 598 Silber/Minute, will er Anfang 2006 zum fünften Mal live auf BBC-TV brechen. Für 2006 ist auch ein neues Album geplant, es beinhaltet Hip Hop, RnB, Roots, Dancehall und Drum & Bass.

Unterstützt wird er an diesem Abend von Deemas J., der im Dezember letzten Jahres mit DJ Diaz-Soto den Orange Club verzaubert hat und Germanys No. 1 MC Soultrain und nicht zuvergessen Kiels Locals Catchy Record, Punchline, Hottamusic und Dayclean Sound.

Also, ein Line-Up, dass die Drum&Bass- und Dancehall-Herzen höher, schneller und weiter schlagen läßt!

El hip-hop tiene un largo historial de mitologías póstumas. Desde las exhumaciones mercenarias de la industria de las figuras de Tupac Shakur y Biggie, hasta la adoración popular de héroes locales como DJ Screw en Texas y Mac Dre en la zona de la bahía de San Francisco, su relación con la mortalidad va de lo complejo a lo conflictivo, de lo sincero a lo ridículamente oportunista. El 10 de febrero de 2006, sin embargo, es seguro decir que la cultura perdió a uno de sus más formidables talentos. Después de una larga batalla contra una enfermedad autoinmune crónica, el lupus, James Dewitt Yancey, tambien conocido como Jay Dee o J Dilla, falleció en su casa de Los Ángeles a la edad de 32 años. Tres años después, es más claro que nunca que este joven productor concretó algo que muy pocos músicos consiguen, dejando no solo un catalogo innovador y atemporal, sino toda una generación inspirada por su intrincado e idiosincrásico trabajo. Mientras artistas como Sa-Ra Creative Partners y Flying Lotus llevan adelante la antorcha de Dilla, el fue igualmente reverenciado en vida por incontables figuras como Pharrell Williams del dúo de productores The Neptunes, y contó también con Kanye West y Just Blaze entre sus mayores seguidores. A pesar de esto, cultivaba un perfil bajo dentro del frecuentemente agresivo y excesivo mundo de la música urbana contemporánea. En lugar de relajarse debajo del reflector, Dilla era siempre más feliz dejando que sus beats hablaran por el. Y como hablaban. Fue un niño tímido creciendo en una casa llena de música en Detroit. Su tardía relación con la escena hip-hop independiente de la ciudad daría forma a su vida. Después de rapear y hacer música en un rudimentario estudio, fue gracias al apadrinamiento del productor local Amp Fiddler que Dilla llegaría a entender todo su potencial. Para 1993, Dilla y su amigo MC Phat Kat editaron su primer vinilo con el nombre de 1st Down. En adición a esto, tambien produjo un LP llamado The Album That Time Forgot para 5 Elementz, un grupo que incluía al fallecido MC Proof, una figuro fundamental para el hip-hop de Detroit. En una época donde la música urbana sufría una reinvención futurista constante, gracias a los lejanos beats y sintetizadores metálicos empleados por gente como Timbaland y The Neptunes, el trabajo de Dilla era la mismo tiempo atemporal y contradictorio. Muy influenciado por el estilo de pioneros como DJ Premier y Pete Rock, la materia prima era granosa y con abundancia de bajo, como su hubiese sido descubierta al fondo de un oscuro y polvoriento sótano. La forma en que estos sampleos eran ensamblados, cortados y unidos, a pesar del origen, le daban un brillo decididamente contemporáneo. Dilla fusionaba la moderno y lo inventivo con una accesibilidad orgánica única. Este carácter accesible se extendía a su vida personal y su relación con otros artistas también. Inclusive después de que Dilla se mudara a Los Ángeles, mantuvo una relación cercana con Detroit y tomaba cualquier oportunidad accesible para representar a su ciudad. Trabajando con Frank N Dank, Platinum Pied Pipers y Common (una relación que alcanzaría su pico con el álbum de 2000 Like Water For Chocolate) esta vibración familiar y de amistad eran fundamentales para su visión. Un deseo de rodearse con mentes afines era tambien evidente por su afiliación al Soulquarians Collective – junto a Talib Kweli, Common, Mos Def, James Poyser, Erykah Badu, ?uestlove, D’Angelo, Q-Tip, Raphael Saadiq y Bilal – y el grupo de productores The Ummah, junto a Q-Tip y Ali Shaheed Muhammad de A Tribe Called Quest. Como si tuviera que probar las credenciales de su ciudad de origen, en 2001 Dilla editó en dos versiones, instrumental y cantada, su debut solista Welcome 2 Detroit en el sello ingles BBE. Como uno podría esperar, este fue un asunto completamente relacionado con la ciudad motor, presentando contribuciones vocales de Phat Kat, Beej, Frank N Dank, Elzhi y el mismo Dilla. Desafortunadamente pocas partes vocales estaban a la altura de la producción. Sin embargo, los interludios musicales “Think Twice” y “BBE (Big Boota Express)” son para señalar; el primero una reelaboración de un track de Donald Byrd con el mismo nombre, acentuando un aspecto de la producción sónica de Dilla, y el segundo una, versión del clásico de Kraftwerk “Trans Europe Express” que, en retrospectiva, actúa como un significativo adelanto de sus ultimas producciones. Alrededor de este período, sello un acuerdo con MCA Records para grabar como solista, llevándolo a separase de Slum Village. Fue en este punto que cambió su seudónimo Jay Dee para evitar confusiones con otro de los pruductores del sello, Jermaine Dupri. Haciendo un quiebre con lo oido en Welcome 2 Detroit, el plan de Dilla era rimar sobre instrumentales producidos por otros, entre ellos Madlib, Pete Rock y Kanye West. Desafortunadamente, todo el proyecto se descarto cuando MCA sufrió cambios de personal.

Como una reacción ante esta desilusión. Dilla tomó un paso típicamente contrario. En 2003, lanzó The Ruff Draft EP en el sello aleman Mummy/Groove Attack. Para alguien designado a establecerse en las ligas mayores del hip-hop estadounidense, esta decisión podría haber sido vista como un suicidio virtual: voluntariamente cortando todas las uniones y editando un mini álbum en un sello europeo y en edición limitada, que pocas personas importantes para la industria notarían. Evidentemente Dilla no pensaba de esta forma, y lo vio como una oportunidad para confundir las expectativas y entregar la clase de trabajo que realmente representaría quien era. Todo grabado en menos de una semana, Ruff Draft hizo exactamente eso. De muchas formas un disco confrontacional, originalmente distribuido solo en vinilo, combinaba una estilo liviano con una actitud ecléctica y experimental, explorando un sonido nuevo y corroído, que debía en iguales proporciones a la música industrial el, el synthpop y la electrónica más elitista. Como lo prometía la introducción que recitaba, “You wanna bounce in your whip with that real live shit Sounds like it’s coming straight from the motherfuckin’ cassette, y’all,” una calidad difusa y lo-fi, intencionalmente enmascara toda la música. Implicita en la proclama  hay una declaración alternativa sobre lo que el hip-hop realmente es. A pesar de que la edición original de seis tracks esta más cerca de la electrónica avant garde que del street rap contemporáneo. Un intento de expandirse y llegar a otras comunidades musicales también puede ser visto en las colaboraciones de Dilla, como los remixes hechos para el Track “As Serious As Your Life” de Four Tet, editados en el mismo año que Ruff Draft, o su contribución vocal al track de Dabrye “Game Over”. Mientras que tracks como “Make’em NV” hacían explicita su desilusión con la maquinaria hip-hop, y la mayoría de las rimas son obscuras, todavía se pueden encontrar momentos realmente lúdicos, específicamente en la sublime “Nothing Like This” y en el gratuitamente lascivo funk de “Crushin’ (Yeeeea!)”. Sin dudas un punto de quiebre estilístico, este EP también acentuó el creciente compromiso de Dilla con los sellos independientes. Esto fue evidente cuando se unió con el sello de Peanutt Butter Wolf, Stones Throw para grabar Champion Sound, editado en 2003. Una colaboración con el productor y MC Madlib (Otis Jackson Jr.) donde cada uno rima sobre los tracks instrumentales producidos por el otro, junto a colaboraciones de Talib Kweli, Guilty Simpson y Percee P, la mayor parte del disco fue grabado con ambos viviendo a miles de kilómetros de distancia, literalmente. Por esa razón, Dilla y Madlib trabajaron separados, enviándose pistas de una ciudad a otra, como lo ilustra la introducción instrumental del disco “LA to Detroit”.

A pesar de esto, el resultado es más cohesivo de lo que este tipo de colaboraciones generalmente permiten. Mientras que las rimas de Dilla ocasionalmente caen lejos de lo brillante, suenan mucho mejor que en Welcom 2 Detroit, y para este punto su producción estaba en llamas. Con Madlib, un Mc mucho más seguro y versátil, los tracks donde viaja sobre los beats de Dilla son por mucho los más satisfactorios, particularmente “React” y “Strip Club”, ambos a cargo del alter ego de Jackson, Quasimoto. Estridente, extraño y de otro mundo, este disco muestra que a pesar de sus naturalezas esencialmente opuestas, los estilos de ambos productores vienen de un lugar simular y complementario. Es difícil imaginar un mejor par. Alrededor de esta época, los problemas de salud de Dilla’s comenzaron manifestarse, su excesivo ritmo de trabajo solo empeoro las cosas. Inmediatamente después de Champion Sound fue completado decidió mudarse a Los Angeles para bien de su carrera y su salud. Solo los más cercanos a el sabian el verdadero alcance de su enfermedad hasta que, en una entrevista frecuentemente citada del número de marzo de 2004 de Urb Magazine, hizo referencia a un colapso debido a una falla renal. “Nunca estuve tan enfermo en mi vida. Nunca estuve en un hospital. Lo que sucedió fue que le doctro me dijo que había lesionado mi riñon debido al stress y por no comer correctamente. Habia días en los cuales no comía pore star encerrado en el sotano trabajando. Inclusive después de estar en el hospital durante tanto tiempo, tube que pelear con los doctores para ir a casa! Porque estar lejos de la música estaba comenzando a afectarme.”

Tristemente, esta trayectoria hacia abajo continuaría, con Dilla confinado a una silla de ruedas durante la mayor parte de su tour europeo de 2005. De manera similar, su utlimo y mejor álbum, DONUTS, sería construido en su mayoría en una cama de hospital. Su madre, Maureen Yancey, llevando los equipos a la habitación de su hijo para que pudiera seguir haciendo lo que más amaba. Escuchandolo con esto en mente le brinda a contenido de DONUTS una cualidad profundamente visceral y emotiva. De sus 31 tracks, pocos duran más de un minuto indicando la falla en la resistencia del artista, y dando un sentido real de un hombre luchando para llevar a cabo la mayor cantidad de ideas posibles antes de que sea demasiado tarde. Significados ocultos aparte, la atmosfera de la música es deslumbrante, fluctuando entre la dura e intensa “Wokinonit” a los tipicos y abrasivos grooves empapados de soul que fueron marca registrada de los primeros trabajos de Dilla. Hay también momentos de belleza trascendental, incluyendo “Waves,” “Don’t Cry” y “Dilla Says Go” que sugieren el alcance de paz interior, quizás inclusive un optimismo cauteloso. Típicamente, los bloques utilizados para construir DONUTS son omnivoros, mezclando lo desconocido con lo común. Como tal, DONUTS puede parecer esquizofrénico y a medio terminar en una primera escucha, sus samples coratdos de forma precaria, sus melodías y beats interrumpiendo el track anterior. Sin embargo, este no es el caso, el perfeccionismo de Dilla siempre estubo en el centro de su atractivo. Dadas las circunstancias que rodearon su creación, es más razonable asumir que este disco de infinitas pistas es exactamente lo que tenía en la cabeza – un asombroso, atractivo auto-epitafio. Después de todo, como la vida de su compositor, estas canciones pueden ser cortas pero aún hacen cosas extraordinarias.
