“…you are the sun, gentle and warm- you make my life complete- give me time to show what you mean to me…”. She’s probably one of the most underrated artists of my generation. Maybe because she is not all about hype. In fact I think when she tries, she fails dismally, as can be evidenced by the release of last CD Exposed- the only CD in her catalogue i still cannot connect to. What i love about her style is that there’s always a song on the CD for which I would buy the whole CD…if only I heard on the Radio or somewhere else…My song of the day is one of those songs. From the CD “Love the woman”, one of my favorite releases of hers (I love all the CD’s but i think i love this and Precious the most). The song is a remake of Minnie Ripperton’s last single before she died. There are a few remakes on the CD- but Chante gives them her earnest treatment, fresh and mature (Nancy Wilson’s “Guess who I saw today” is my other favorite and i fell and broke up to “It ain’t supposed to be this way”). I usually cannot stand remakes- but I make an exception here. In fact when i first heard this song i had just met someone and I was hoping to actually sing this song to them at some point…it never came to be (*sad face*). But then that’s what the songs on this CD do- a love letter in musical notation. One of the very few CD’s I listen to from beginning to end and repeat. I’m glad she’s back to her soul-jazz ballad roots. An absolutely worthy buy- highly recommended.

Happy Friday All! I am here to do what I do, which is bring you all 5 random Hip Hop and R&B songs from back in the day. One song that trips me out from today’s selections is the song by rapper Domino. I vividly recall his song being played during the dances back when I was in middle school. Can we say ‘one hit wonder’? Lol. ‘Ghetto Jam’ climbed up to #7 on the Billboard chart the year it was released, but was he ever heard of again after this song was released and heavily spun on the radio? What’s funny about Chante Moore’s 1992 release, “Candlelight and You”, is that it came out when I was just 10 years old and I heard it around me so much that I liked back then, but still love it and listen to it til this day. Whats up with that? Lol. I might catch some static for posting up Ralph Tresvant’s solo effort, “Sensitivity” because lots of people thought he came off as a punk with that song, lol, but you can’t deny that y’all used to crank it…don’t lie! I think this classifies to be a OneFaris Throwback track, after listening to Ghostface – Guest House, I just had to re-visit this R&B classic.

I still remember when I first heard this song as a kid, Ron Isley’s voice stood out for me, his falsetto was really complimented and cleverly produced by R. Kelly, it is with songs like this this that I cannot help but to applaud him for the talent that he is, although current material is lacking this kind of quality, I remain thankful that we can look back and listen to such a song, from the concept to the delivery, this R&B opera, a sequel to the classic Down Low, Contagious remains an evergreen classic.

As we saw earlier the music that is being released lately has been on a serious decline. It is a sad day people. A sad decade because music is nothing like it was in the 90’s. Let’s take a look back at a certified classic because today it may have just been destroyed for the masses. More on that after the video.

H-Town “Knocking Boots” from 1993

That indeed is a classic and a nice reminder of how music could have been about intimacy but still tasteful and have a nice tasteful video to accompany it. But as I have already say today it is over. Let me share with you.

Now that you have layed witness to both versions of the song. Tell me how bad are your eyes bleeding? This video is way too comical to be taken seriously at all. Between the lame attempts of portraying ‘boot knocking’ by having some stepping boots pop up randomly in the video and ‘Sexy Spec’ trying to get his strip tease on I don’t know how to continue on with my life without these images haunting me. The only person who makes this song acceptable is the new singing man ‘4 Play’. He needs to take a serious clue from his predecessor and break free to go solo. He is no Marvin Gaye (who they seriously disrespected by cutting him out and replacing with themselves) but he is nothing to shit on by todays’ standards.

What is wrong with the youth of today who I know will buy this trash of an album “80’s Baby” that I predict will be coming to attack this planet with its impending awfulness very soon? I watched the H-Town video again today and realized I was only about 7 years old when this song came out and I remember it coming out and I remember loving it when it came out and waiting on The Box to play the video again. But I sit here thinking how tragic it is that this new remake with a vulgar video will be viewed by the 7 year olds that exist today. Thank God I had parents to teach me right from wrong but since there is a serious lack of that ability nowadays, THESE KIDS ARE FUCKED! This groups demographic of pre-teens and teens are SERIOUSLY FUCKED. They will walking around thinking a man kissing on his biceps is ’sexy’, that interpretive dancing is something worth imitating (about 1:10 into the video), and that being a part of the Technicolored Yaki Weave Crew is something worthy of praise (BLACK, BROWN, BLOND and RED, HOORAY FOR THE RAINBOW!!!).
