Adrienne, uma bem sucedida designer em Nova York; Frédéric, economista e professor universitário em Paris; e Jérémie, um dinâmico empresário que vive na China, são apresentados às texturas e lembranças do final da infância, às memórias partilhadas, criando uma visão única do futuro. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-1529" title="summer-hours-poster_280x415" src="http://coffeespew.wordpress.com/files/2009/08/summer-hours-poster_280x415.jpg?w=202" alt="summer-hours-poster_280x415" width="202" height="300" />Seems criminal somehow that, since opening in New York last May, it’s taken three and a half months for Olivier Assayas’s masterful new film <em>Summer Hours</em> to finally make its way to Madison’s Sundance Cinemas. Worse, the print that’s being screened is inexcusably worn and scuffed. (Tarantino’s <em>Inglourious Basterds</em> is a lesser film, but I’m planning on catching it a second time this week just to marvel at the saturated color in a pristine print.) Assayas is probably still best known for his stylish cult hit <em>Irma Vep</em> (1996) starring Maggie Cheung in a black latex catsuit and Jean-Pierre Léaud as a dissipated movie director. <em>Summer Hours</em>, while seeming more conventional on the surface than the self-consciously arty and erotic <em>Irma Vep</em>, is no less exhilarating. The film centers around a family-owned country estate in disrepair and the three grown siblings (Charles Berling, Juliette Binoche, and Jérémie Renier, all first-rate) who must decide what’s to be done with the property once their mother has died. The estate, which had belonged to the mother’s uncle, a well-known artist, is filled to bursting with paintings, glassware, and furniture of significant value. From this simple premise, Assayas (who also scripted) touches upon themes of loss, generational conflict, infidelity, and, surprisingly and profoundly, the manner in which art and beauty are woven into our lives and provide continuity and solace. It’s great storytelling, literary in its sensibility—think Chekhov and Henry James—but ravishingly cinematic in the telling.</p>

<p>Here, from the French writer-director Olivier Assayas, is a wistful Chekhovian drama of historical and familial inheritance. An aging widow (Edith Scob) assembles her family at the country estate she inherited from a famous-artist uncle, and prods her adult children (Charles Berling, Juliette Binoche and Jérémie Renier) to plan what to do with its treasures when she herself is gone. Tensely, but tenderly, the siblings take inventory of their sentimental attachments, ruminating on the value of heirlooms and intangible family bonds. By turns procedural and meandering, Assayas’ tale has an irregular pace, and occasionally it drags. But the performers all shine, especially with Eric Gautier’s nimble cinematography so alertly noticing them. It is, uniformly, a gracious and deeply felt movie. That you’ll probably be less inclined to like it if you’re less than 30 years old is part of what it’s about.</p>

Antes, quero falar de um tipo de abandono. Em relação aos familiares mais velhos. Em só visitá-los em datas ditadas pela sociedade. Por mais afazeres, compromissos&#8230; querendo, encontrará um espaço na agenda para uma visita fora das datas de praxe: aniversário, Natal, Dia das Mães, Dia dos Pais&#8230; Nem sempre, há cobranças por parte deles, mas com certeza lhes agradaria serem mais visitados. Como no caso da personagem de &#8216;Horas de Verão&#8217;. Vendo Hélene (Edith Scob) acenar para a família na despedida após o almoço dos seus 75º aniversário, bateu uma tristeza. Eles tinham pressa de irem embora. E isso é algo tão comum, e no mundo real. Mas o foco do filme é na partilha dos seus bens entre seus filhos.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Hélene, como a pressentir que estaria perto do fim, aproveitou essa reunião para conversar com o seu filho mais velho, Fredéric (Charles Berling). O único, dos três filhos, que ainda mora na França. Pedir a ele que cuidasse da partilha dos bens. Ela sabia que após a sua morte, a casa seria vendida. Como tudo mais de valor dentro dela. Ciente do valor de alguns bens, ela lhe deu um inventário particular. Os valores sentimentais dos objetos sendo expostos.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Era como se Hélene só esperasse por um livro onde catalogou as obras de um tio, o pintor Paul Bertier. Chegou a ir a uma das conferências, e se foi. Como disse ainda no seu aniversário, à empregada já idosa: que com ela iriam apenas as emoções, as histórias, os segredos&#8230; E é mesmo o que levamos. Sem saber, o que ficará de nós naqueles que continuam vivos. Em muitas histórias familiares, quando um idoso morre, com ele também se vai o único laço que unia os outros familiares.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Não se pode mesmo interferir na vida adulta dos filhos. Pois cada um precisa construir a sua história. Hélene viveu a sua. Ela tratou apenas de resguardar uma quantia para sua serviçal. Os filhos, como herdeiros legítimos, que cuidassem do inventário oficial. Para diminuir o valor do inventário, buscaram por um Museu, o d&#8217;Orsay. Outro ponto interessante nessa história. Conhecer um pouco o trabalho nos bastidores de um museu: aquisição do acervo, restauração das obras&#8230;<br />
Seus outros dois filhos, eram:<br />
- Adrienne (uma Juliette Binoche loira), uma Designer. Morava em Nova York. Não tinha filhos.<br />
- Jerémie (Jerémie Renier), um empresário que estava sentando base na China. Por conta dos salários baixos pagos por lá.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Fredéric foi voto vencido em não querer vender a chácara da família. Pois seus irmãos queriam vender tudo, e rápido. Adrienne não quis o jogo de chá, em porcelana que sua mãe, em vida, disse que seria dela. Além da bandeja de prata, ficou com um bule de prata. Algo que Hélene falou que ela não gostaria por ser uma obra de arte. Por Adrienne gostar de um designe moderno. No qual ela rebateu. Gostava do funcional.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Paralelo ao inventário, Fredéric está tendo trabalho com a filha adolescente. Uma rebelde sem causa. Como também, em defender suas ideias lançadas num livro. Sobre política econômica. Talvez, por isso, não contestou seus irmãos. Dos três, era o mais apegado a chácara, os quadros, os objetos&#8230; Por ele, tudo continuaria em família. Como estava até antes da mãe falecer.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">O filme é de uma simplicidade ímpar no contar, em mostrar uma história comum. Mesmo contendo objetos valiosos, como herança, ela é igual a tantas outras. A mim, me fez lembrar de muitas cenas reais. Por ter me identificado tanto, que eu amei &#8216;Horas de Verão&#8217;. Mas o filme é para um público mais seleto. Daqueles que gostam de ouvir histórias da família, em reuniões em torno de uma mesa. Uma pena! Mas até nisso o Diretor, Olivier Assayas, pensou. Está no final do filme. Desse excelente filme!</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;"><em>Caos Calmo</em> est un grand film. Un grand film poignant et poétique. L&#8217;histoire de cet homme, Pietro, qui se retrouve &#8220;seul&#8221;, avec sa fille de 10 ans, après le décès soudain de sa femme nous touche, mais sans tomber dans un pathos extrême, et pourtant logique. Et cela grâce à l&#8217;immense talent de Nanni Moretti qui, paradoxalement à son statut de veuf, est enclos à une absence totale d&#8217;émotions, tout du moins de &#8220;crise&#8221; et de &#8220;tristesse&#8221;. C&#8217;est là la première force et originalité du film, de ce pari risqué, néanmoins réussi.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Par la suite, l&#8217;histoire développe l&#8217;évolution de ce deuil peu commun et, surtout, la nouvelle relation qui naît entre un père peut-être trop absent et sa fille, peut-être pas tant que ça en manque de (re)pères. Cette raison de vivre semble nouvelle pour Pietro, comme si le paternel prenait -enfin- conscience de ce qui lui était cher, et que le reste, travail, argent, loisirs, n&#8217;avait -finalement- guère d&#8217;importance. Certes cela peut paraître un poil trop cliché, trop facile même, mais pourtant ça marche grâce à la mise en scène fluide d&#8217;Antonello Grimaldi, et la performance de Moretti bien sûr. Dont on attend, avec lui, cet éclat en sanglot, celui qui viendra briser ce &#8220;chaos calme&#8221; qui règne dans son corps.</p>
<p style="text-align:center;"><em><strong>&#8220;Et la magie opère, le spectateur suit ce petit bout de vie de personnages attachants avec plaisir et émotion&#8221;</strong></em></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">On pense donc qu&#8217;on va accompagner la nouvelle vie de Pietro entre son bureau, sa maison et ses nouvelles responsabilités envers sa fille. Finalement on ne va le suivre qu&#8217;autour d&#8217;un endroit unique et insolite : un petit parc situé en face de l&#8217;école de la petite Claudia, sa fille (subtile et douce Blu Di Martino). À partir de là, un défilé de personnages secondaires va rendre visite à Pietro et se confier à lui. Certains leur parlent de leur incompréhension face à cette situation, comme ses collègues (Berling, Podalydes&#8230;) et sa famille, (son frère et sa belle-sœur, excellents Alessandro Gassman et Valeria Golino). De parfaits inconnus sont aussi de passage autour de Pietro (un handicapé mental, une joggeuse&#8230; (SPOIL : Et même Roman Polanski)) et vont devenir des pièces maîtresses dans cette nouvelle bulle de vie.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Et la magie opère, le spectateur suit ce petit bout de vie de personnages attachants avec plaisir et émotion, le tout ponctué par une sublime musique composée par Paolo Buonvino, qui avait déjà officié sur <em>Napoléon (et moi), Leçons d&#8217;amour à l&#8217;Italienne, Romanzo criminale,</em> et <em>Souviens-toi de moi</em>, entre autre. Ces chansons enivrantes accompagnent mélancoliquement la nouvelle vie de Pietro. Le morceau P<em>yramid Song</em>, de Radiohead, envoûte encore plus le spectateur lors d&#8217;une séquence mémorable, lorsque la douleur se présentera enfin&#8230;</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">La fameuse scène de sexe (avec la magnifique Isabella Ferrari), crue et sauvage, qui vient casser tout ce qui avait été instauré dans le film, permet de montrer avec habilité, à nouveau le côté humain de Pietro. Car si ce contraste brutal survient vers la fin du film ce n&#8217;est pas vraiment pour nous faire croire que Pietro a fait son deuil et qu&#8217;il peut passer à autre chose. Non, Pietro est avant tout un humain, il a besoin de sexe, de toucher un corps, de faire l&#8217;amour, de jouir. Pense-t-il encore à sa femme ? Y a t-il, de toute façon, déjà pensé autant avant qu&#8217;elle soit morte ? Au spectateur de trouver sa propre réponse.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Parmi tous les personnages qui tournent autour de la vie de Pietro, autour de son banc, dans ce petit parc face à l&#8217;école de sa fille, finalement ce sont deux femmes, inconnues, qui deviendront les plus importantes. L&#8217;une, accompagnée de son chien, sera un peu comme le spectateur, intriguée face à cet homme seul, un peu bizarre et que tout le monde embrasse. (SPOIL L&#8217;autre, celle avec qui il aura ce rapport sexuel violent, est, paradoxalement, la femme qu&#8217;il aura sauvé d&#8217;une noyade au début du film, au moment où son épouse meurt&#8230;)</p>
<p style="text-align:center;"><em><strong>&#8220;Un grand film poignant&#8221;</strong></em></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Le seul défaut du film serait peut-être sa longueur. Car en plus d&#8217;un rythme déjà lent, ce qui n&#8217;avantage pas le spectateur, le film est long, un peu moins de deux heures. Un montage plus court, moins dense aurait été apprécié. Mais peut-être qu&#8217;ainsi le long-métrage nous paraît plus réaliste. Comme l&#8217;ont souligné certains médias, si Moretti avait lui-même mis en scène cette histoire, tiré d&#8217;un roman éponyme de Sandro Veronesi, peut-être que <em>Caos Calmo</em> aurait séduit davantage de monde.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Peu importe, il n&#8217;en reste pas moins un grand film poignant.</p>

Ce qui est plutôt rare&#8230; En effet je trouve qu&#8217;elle se lit &#8220;bien&#8221;, qu&#8217;il y a une linéarité claire et agréable, l&#8217;ensemble est &#8220;fluide&#8221;. Tous les éléments sont là : le casting, l&#8217;histoire, les bonnes choses, les moins bonnes, la musique, etc. Je n&#8217;ai pas parlé de la photographie du film car elle reste très basique. Le texte est sensiblement différent que celui déjà en ligne sur <a href="http://boxmovies.20minutes-blogs.fr/archive/2008/12/21/caos-calmo.html" target="_blank"><em>Box(e) movies</em></a>, quelques modifications mineures, pour plus de clarté. Bref un film coup de cœur qui vous bouleverse pas mal après la projection. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Aujourd’hui on fait plaisir au CSA avec un peu de quota de film Français. </strong>J’avoue, c’est pas simple mais j’ai envie de faire ma bonne action. Y’a quelques mois on m’avait plus que conseillé de regarder Ridicule, comme quoi en fait c’est hyper bien et que ça me plairait. L’idée est tombée dans l’oubli jusqu’à ce que je remarque la sortie du Blu-Ray. Au pire si le film est mauvais j’aurais le décolleté de Judith Godrèche en haute définition. Ce n’est qu’après coup que je découvrais que Ridicule avait raflé quatre césars en 1997, dont celui de meilleur film et de meilleur réalisateur pour Patrice Leconte<strong>. En plus y’a plein de gens bien là dedans, à commencer par Charles Berling et Jean Rochefort, deux acteurs qui ont réussi l’exploit de ne pas se rendre insupportable au fil des ans. </strong>On ne peut pas en dire autant de Fanny Ardant, en plein surjeu. Mais il faut savoir prendre le mauvais avec le bon.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Grégoire Ponceludon de Malavoy est un jeune noble sans le sous. <strong>Ses terres englobent les marais de la Dombes, insalubres au point de tuer ses gens.</strong> Décidé à convaincre le roi de financer son projet d’assèchement, il monte à Versailles où il se heurte à la lenteur bureaucratique toute française. Le marquis de Bellegarde, sensible à Grégoire lui offre le gîte et lui fait rencontrer sa fille, promise à un vieil aristocrate. Il va enseigner à notre héros les us et coutumes de la cour de Louis XVI.<strong> Progressant à coup de bons mots et de coucheries plus ou moins flatteuses, Grégoire semble parvenir à ses fins, à obtenir une audience du roi. </strong>Mais à une époque où le ridicule tue et où l’honneur est aisément bafoué, il va réaliser que son ascension ne s’est pas faite sans concessions à la morale et l’apparition de nouveaux ennemis, bien résolus à le couvrir de ridicule.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Tout ça pour dire que Ridicule est l’histoire d’un candide qui monte sur Paris avec un noble projet, mais doit se résoudre à starfucker et à copiner à mort pour que l’on accepte de le considérer. <strong>En ces temps de disette méritocratique où des blogueurs font de leur aversion pour le système leur fond de commerce</strong>, aucun film n’aura été plus d’actualité. Le format cinémascope est superbement mis à contribution, accouchant de magnifiques plans. Je ne suis pas non plus insensibles à de beaux costumes et surtout, le plus gros atout du film, de fins dialogues. L’intrigue repose sur ces saillies et autres cassages vintage qui, brodés de vocabulaire précieux, m’ont offert des palpitations de plaisir.<strong> Tout ceci au point que je m’en veuille de ne pas avoir eu vent de ce film plus tôt,</strong> où quand la France est capable de se moquer d’elle-même dans un emballage faisant pour une fois honneur au cinéma. Un film qui n’a de ridicule que le nom.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">N&#8217;empêche, faire des captures d&#8217;écrans depuis une vidéo haute def&#8217; sur son ordi, c&#8217;est carrément plus simple et rapide que d&#8217;écumer google images à la recherche de ce que l&#8217;on cherche&#8230; Bon, par contre faudra compenser par des explosions dans le ciné club de la semaine prochaine, histoire de ne pas perdre de vue mes racines.<br />
Demain, on parlera de démission intellectuelle.</p>

<p>This got high ratings on rottentomatoes.com, but I found it a bit tedious to sit through.  It wasn&#8217;t bad, it was just meandering and wasn&#8217;t made in any real interesting way.</p>
<p>I found the topic &#8211; whether you want to, or can, burden yourself with your family heirlooms and possessions &#8211; to be an interesting one.  I just thought they went about it all in too slowly paced a way.  There wasn&#8217;t a lot of emotional buildup or pay off.  Also, conversation-heavy movies can be hard to deal with when you&#8217;re having to read subtitles.</p>
<p>The actors did a good job&#8230;I think.  Again, hard to tell when it&#8217;s not in English.</p>
<p>Overall, it does make you think about family heirlooms and where the real value in them lies.  Do they have more value in a museum on display for the world to see or in your living room, holding flowers, and reminding you of days of your youth?</p>

<p><em>Summer Hours </em>(<em>L&#8217;Heure d&#8217;été</em>) originally began as an initiative by Paris&#8217;s Musée d&#8217;Orsay. It was to be a short film that would have been part of a project examining the relationship between art and cinema. The full project never happened but French director Olivier Assayas (<em>Clean, Irma Vep</em>)<em> </em>went ahead with the original idea and made <em>Summer Hours </em>as a feature. The resulting film is gentle family drama that uses the dynamic between three siblings to explore the relationship between people and art. <em>Summer Hours </em>begins with the 75th birthday celebrations for Hélène (played by prolific French actor Edith Scob), the niece of a famous painter. Hélène&#8217;s country house is filled with her uncle&#8217;s extraordinary 19th century art collection, which she wants her three 40-something children to sell once she dies. Later when Hélène does die the siblings need to decide what to do. Frédéric (Charles Berling who also appear in Assayas&#8217;s <em>demonlover </em>and <em>Les destinées sentimentales</em>) wants to preserve his mother&#8217;s home and art collection but his brother Jérémie (Jérémie Renier from <em><a href="http://blog.cinemaautopsy.com/2008/07/29/miff-reviews-the-princes-of-nebraska-in-bruges-katyn/#b" target="_self">In Bruges</a> </em>and <em>L&#8217;Enfant</em>) and sister Adrienne (Juliette Binoche) now live abroad and can&#8217;t see any reason not to sell everything.</p>
<p><!--more-->Interestingly the only other feature that resulted from the Musée d&#8217;Orsay&#8217;s abandoned project was <em><a href="http://blog.cinemaautopsy.com/2008/06/03/film-review-flight-of-the-red-balloon-2007/" target="_self">Flight of the Red Balloon</a></em> (<em>Le voyage du ballon rouge</em>) by Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-Hsien, who is an important influence on Assayas. Not only do both films star Juliette Binoche but they also share a gentle realist approach, which focuses on everyday interactions. <em>Summer Hours </em>is more narrative driven than <em>Flight of the Red Balloon </em>and is also a more intimate and accessible film than many of Assayas&#8217;s other works. <em>Summer Hours</em> focuses on the way Frédéric, Jérémie and Adrienne cope with their mother&#8217;s death and resolve their conflicting wishes about what to do with her art collection. It is a film about the relationships between siblings and how people cope with everyday life after loosing a family member. </p>

Through the interactions of the three siblings and their families, Assayas subtly explores ideas surrounding the place that art has in society. There are also some moments of gentle humour about evaluating the differences between the marketplace value of an object and its sentimental value. Assayas never gets too academic but there are moments where the audience are invited to compare the difference between viewing an item in somebody&#8217;s home and viewing it in a museum. If there is one message that Assayas is trying to send out then it is the idea that while preserving art and antiques is important, the younger generations should never feel burdened by having to preserve the past. <em>Summer Hours</em> beautifully combines Assayas unpredictable and intellectual approach to filmmaking with a very human family drama.</p>

<p>This movie is all over the place. I gave up trying to figure out its purpose about half-way through. This film is like an unnecessary overextended vacation&#8211;we get shots of adults talking and children playing, but all of them don&#8217;t seem to amount to anything. I get the idea that Bernard Campan does not have a sense of self and he tries to find it by interacting with Charles Berling, whose character happens to be gay. But at the same time, I feel like they can&#8217;t really learn from each other&#8211;at least not in a meaningful way&#8211;because their relationship is only by means of utlity. Their conversations are shallow and choppy; maybe I&#8217;m lost in translation but a great movie resonates through language barriers. Partly written and directed by Zabou Breitman, I thought he could&#8217;ve done a much better job with the pacing (cutting off thirty minutes or so) and escalating the drama a bit more (why can&#8217;t some of the adults notice that Campan and Berling are around each other a little too much?). In the end, I felt like nothing great is at stake so I couldn&#8217;t feel for the protagonist. I couldn&#8217;t relate with any of the characters, especially Berling&#8217;s because he sees life in such a negative light. The filmmakers tried to justify Berling&#8217;s pessimism by introducing a story regarding his relationship with his father. It felt contrived, if not forced, so I didn&#8217;t buy it at all. Although some people have strained relationships with their father, they learn to rise above it and be strong people. So it begs the question: how can Campan learn something about his life from Berling if Berling doesn&#8217;t even know himself? Avoid this one especially if you&#8217;re a person of logic.</p>

Tout y était, me semble-t-il, cette mise en abîme affreuse, les grandparents dans les poubelles, les deux petites lucarnes. L&#8217;absurde.</p>
<p>Etaient-ce ces deux vieux aussi âgés que leur jeu ? Les silences trop poussés, trop en quête de sens, ou le jeu bizarre de Berling ? Je ne sais pas. J&#8217;en saurai plus dans dix ans, quand j&#8217;en aurai plus lus et vues.</p>
<p>Quelques moments intenses. Le texte est pas mal, dira-t-on.</p>

<p>Tres hermanos entrados en los cuarenta se ven obligados a entenderse tras la muerte de su madre. Adrienne es una diseñadora de éxito en Nueva York, Frédéric, un profesor universitario de París y Jérémie, un hombre de negocios asentado en China. A cargo de todos ellos queda la herencia familiar, una espectacular colección de arte del siglo XIX. Si quieren llegar a un acuerdo deberán dejar a un lado sus diferencias y afrontar juntos los recuerdos de la infancia y el nuevo futuro que les espera.</p>
<p>Nacido como un proyecto del Museo Orsay para celebrar su aniversario, &#8220;Las horas del verano&#8221; es un drama sobre la familia firmado por el realizador Olivier Assayas. El director de &#8220;Irma Vep&#8221; y &#8220;Los destinos sentimentales&#8221; se sirve de un paisaje bucólico, repleto de obras de arte, para retratar el ciclo vital de una familia francesa, como si de las estaciones del año se tratara: momentos de alegría, días de luto, nuevas generaciones&#8230; Por primera vez, el Museo Orsay ha cedido a los cineastas mobiliario, ilustraciones y algunas de sus salas privadas para el rodaje.</p>
<p>Buena parte del encanto del filme reside en su reparto. &#8220;Las horas del verano&#8221; supone la vuelta de Juliette Binoche al cine francés después de participar en &#8220;Como la vida misma&#8221; y &#8220;Breaking and Entering&#8221;. En esta ocasión, Binoche está muy bien custodiada por dos galanes: Charles Berling, al que últimamente hemos visto en &#8220;Caos Calmo&#8221;, y Jérémie Renier, que hace poco estrenó &#8220;Escondidos en Brujas&#8221;. Completa el reparto, Edith Scob, en cartel con &#8220;La cuestión humana&#8221;.</p>

<p>This French film begins with a 75th birthday party and ends with a teenage girl taking some tentative steps into adulthood. In between, the relentless cycle of life is explored through the prism of three generations of the same family.</p>
<p>The elegant Hélène (<span>Edith Scob</span>) is the matriarch of a family scattered to the four winds and who now lives in the rural family home with just her long-suffering housekeeper (Isabelle Sadoyan) for company. She is devoted to preserving and promoting the name of her uncle, an artist of modest repute. Moreover, the house appears to be bulging with various antiques of value.</p>
<p>Her death, though, brings certain unspoken tensions to a head between her three children, two of whom now live abroad. The oldest, an academic (Charles Berling), wants to preserve the family home and the works within it.The others have lost touch with those days and have practical financial matters to address. Accordingly, decisions over the inheritance need to get made.</p>
<p>Now I agree that this does sound like a rather galling discussion to have to listen in on. However, there is a certain voyeuristic realisation on your part that this is a discussion that most siblings sadly have to have sooner or later. Therefore, in true soap opera style, you do want to know how it works out between them.<!--more--></p>

<p>At the same time, the film fortunately does extend beyond that in terms of its ambition! It also portrays a keen sense of life being for the living. Hélène is insistent that her interests in preserving the past die with her. Frédéric, mostly out of a sense of filial duty, is inclined to disagree. However, his own life is complicated by raising children of his own, as well as other challenges that are to befall him. In this sense, Frédéric is representative of middle age &#8211; having to accept that not everything in life can be as he wants it to be, but learning to accept the pleasures that his life does offer him.</p>
<p>Finally, there is Sylvie (Alice de Lencquesaing), the daughter of Frédéric. The early scenes show her frolicking with the other children. Later on, she has a run-in with the law. However, when she brings all of her friends to the old house for a party, the sense is clearly that she is now less of a child and now more of a woman. Once more, so, time has had its effect. and the cycle continues.</p>

<p>This film was brought about with the support of the  Musée d&#8217;Orsay in Paris. Inevitably, this makes it <a href="http://noordinaryfool.com/2008/08/28/somers-town-a-film-review/" target="_blank">another film</a> with a sense of product placement to it, given that it overtly promotes the idea that there are inheritance tax benefits from turning over valuable antiques to the French State. At the same time, there is an interesting debate throughout the film regarding aesthetics versus utility. This leads to several nicely worked tongue-in-cheek moments. There is also the rather sad transition of a fine-looking desk from being a busy place of work to being just some more pieces of adjoined wood sitting there all polished and shiny in a museum for visitors to breeze nonchalantly past.</p>
<p>On the whole, <em>Summer Hours </em>is a little ponderous and erratic as a work. Equally, it is somewhat devoid of drama. However, it does engage in the subjects of death and the continuity of life in a manner that both avoids over-sentimentality and provokes some worthy thought on the subject. Above all, though, it paints a picture of family life from a variety of perspectives. Even if this can feel a little cobbled together at times, it does capture that sense of different and assertive points of view having to figure out ways of all getting along together.  In the end, familial love wins out over property and objects.</p>
<p>This is a film that is unlikely change your life, but which possesses a simple and touching beauty that should enrich it a little.</p>
