A charro or cowboy in Guadalajara, Mexico.

On a visit to Guadalajara, Mexico, our SATW group took in a charreada, which is sort of a Mexican rodeo. The charros and charras (cowboys and cowgirls) perform in a variety of events demonstrating their skills in horsemanship.

En las escuelas particularmente se celebran las fiestas patrias decorando los salones y con un despliegue de decoraciones a lo largo de toda la escuela, el  típico papel picado, los dulces mexicanos, las banderas, como muchas veces el 15 y el 16 no hay clases, se festejan estos días la semana anterior o posterior a la celebración nacional, en algunas escuelas dan incluso el grito, y los alumnos más pequeños de disfrazan de trajes típicos. Hay concursos de decorado de salones y luego hay juegos o demostraciones charras ya sea con el lazo o con los bailes. La verdad es que en México cualquier pretexto es bueno para reunirse con la familia y los amigos y hacer de cada encuentro una fiesta y una celebración. Tengo entendido que en las diferentes embajadas y consulados en otros países también se festejan los días patrios (15 y 16 de septiembre) o sea que si vives fura de México,

Shaking the Hand of Legendary Golfer and True Champion Tom Watson at Al Taqaddum Iraq 24 Nov 2007

My dad was a golfer.  He began golfing as he was in his last few years in the Navy.  Before he started golfing he was constantly watching it on TV when no baseball was on.  When he retired he began golfing in earnest.  It remained a lifelong passion of his even after he contracted Alzheimer’s disease.  He developed as a golfer and by his early 50’s had developed a decent handicap.  He also would help out as a volunteer at major tournaments at Pebble Beach.   Dad loved golf, but as with everything in his life he took it very seriously.  Sometimes when I visited home on leave dad would take me golfing and let me use his old clubs.  Well, since I would golf once every three to five years I would not do very well.  Before long he would be preaching at me and berating me because he said I had natural talent to hit the ball well and was wasting it.  Those were always interesting outings, as my brother Jeff can testify to himself.

Anyway, back in the 1970s when I was still living at home dad would frequently watch golf on TV.  One of his favorite players was Tom Watson.  Back in those days because of dad I was familiar with almost every major figure in the sport.  However they were not the same to me as like baseball players.  Baseball was more of my sport, though I did and still do appreciate golf and now that my shoulder is getting healed up from the beating it took in Iraq I am going to be getting out on the course on a much more frequent basis once the Minor League Baseball season is over.  The last time I was out in California my brother told me the same thing that my dad did about my ability to hit them ball.  I trust Jeff as he is a very good golfer and had coached golf at the high school level.  I think I am even more attuned to what I’m doing on the golf course because of Iraq and my PTSD.  I am much more in tune with what my body is doing at any given point of time.  I can now feel when a shoulder dips or I pull up on a shot as well as a number of other things that I never noticed before when I would go out on the course.

Because of dad I have retained a latent interest in golf.  So when I heard that Tom Watson was in the lead at the British Open while listening to my local ESPN Sports Radio 1310 on the way home from having the Undead Tooth of Terror extracted my ears perked up.  I had met Tom as well as a number of other golf legends in between missions at Al Taqaddum Air Base which was my home away from home while deployed to Iraq.  Tom and several others came through on a tour.  Now celebrities would make the rounds of Iraq and Afghanistan and I am grateful for them coming to visit, especially when things were not going well and a lot of guys were still getting killed and wounded.  Many times I was out in the far reaches when people would come through so I didn’t see many of them.  My friend Father Jose Bautista-Rojas was an escort for some dignitaries who accompanied the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen on his tour which included Lance Armstrong and Robin Williams.  Jose got to spend some time with them and got me baseball hat signed by both.  He said that Robin said that “I had better be praying for him.”  I thought that was both funny and kind.  I did meet Chuck Norris when he made his 2007 trip through Al Anbar visiting Marines.  He shook about every person’s hand and had pictures taken with them and he didn’t just go to the big bases, but some of the little remote places that I went. I would have liked to meet Robin. I have heard from a number of folks that he is great to military folks.  One thing that I noticed about the celebrities that came out, no matter who they were or what their politics, they were generally very friendly and seemed to care.  Celebrities take a lot of knocks for many reasons, some justified and others not, but when they come out to a combat zone it is appreciated.  I remember my dad talking about the Bob Hope tour that came to his ship off of Vietnam which included Sammy Davis Junior and Charro.

Anyway, I met Tom at Al Taqaddum in between mission’s right after Thanksgiving on November 24^th 2007.  He and his group comprised of him David Feherty, Butch Harmon, Joe Inman, Tom Lehman and Howard Twitty were some of the finest and kindest men I have ever met while deployed.  These men took time with every Marine, Soldier and Sailor who came to see them.  They not only signed items but they gave away more things to our folks than I have seen given anywhere.  I received a hat signed by Tom and the others from the Rider Cup Team, and a picture signed by all, personalized to me.  That was really cool.  While talking with Tom I told him about my dad and his condition as well as my brother.  I asked if it would be possible to get something signed for them.  Tom got with the other guys and had a hat signed for my brother and each of the golfers inscribed a person message to my dad on the pictures.  They all expressed their well wishes to him and prayers for his health.  I was really touched by what gentlemen all of these men were.

I watched the last part of the British Open today pulling for Tom, but unfortunately he lost in the playoff to Stewart Cink after making bogey on 18. The golf miracle story ended with Tom finishing in second place, but even still he was not expected to do what he did even a week ago.  I really felt bad for him as he stood with tears in his eyes.  Despite the fact that he finished second Tom Watson to me is a gentleman, sportsman, a supporter of us who serve in unpopular wars, a man of compassion and a true Champion.  God bless you Tom and thank you for what you did for my dad while I was in Iraq.

Esto lo ví en la mañana en el noticiero y me parecío demasiado bueno para dejarlo pasar

Holgas!  One thing I’ve been looking forward to now that I’m back in Portland is the ability to take my Holography to the next level.  I spent this weekend in a workshop with master printer Tyler Boley at Portland’s New Space Center for Photography.  Tyler is a recognized leader worldwide in fine art digital printing and is one of only a handful of digital printers working at such a high level.  I couldn’t believe the work he is producing out of his print house, Custom Digital, up in Seattle.  It doesn’t look, for lack of a better word…digital?

A couple things before I continue…

Back to business…

This weekend I got to learn Tyler’s process; from film negative capture to photoshop to finished print.  O.K., learn is an overstatement.  Tyler’s been at this for a long time and is still evolving, but he did guide me through a process that resulted in 10″x10″ prints of the two images you see above.

Aside from processing all my Holga work, I’ve got a dozen-ish Vallarta weddings left to blog and one Oregon wedding so far with a lot more to come.  Man I love this City.

July 7, 1968: Elvis recorded the song, “Charro.”

The song was the theme for Elvis’ Western film, “Charro!” It was one of his later films, and also one of the only films in which Elvis does not sing on-screen. It is also one of the only films in which Elvis is not clean-shaven, as you can see in the movie poster on the right.

En los años siguientes Carlos Arriaga es invitado por el presidente municipal para interpretar nuevamente el himno nacional en las festividades estatales, siendo asi reconocido como hijo predilecto de Cordoba, Veracruz. Sin descuidar sus estudios Carlos Arriaga dedica gran parte del tiempo a la musica, tomando clases de canto, guitarra y baile destacandose asi en cada disiplina.

A los 16 años de edad hace su debut professional acompañado por el Mariachi Mi Mexico a quienes en sus ratos libres habia enseñado a bailar logrando asi un show diferente. “Me Bebi Tu Recuerdo” es el titulo de su primer album discografico, que logro colocarse en los primeros lugares de popularidad radiales asi como altas ventas, logrando asi, su primer disco de oro, siguiendole muchos premios y recomocimientos, destacando su gran labor social en eventos a beneficio publico.

En el año 2005 lanza al mercado su album titulado “Charro De Nacimiento” ganando el reconocimiento de los medios por su estilo unico de la musica ranchera, siendo asi invitado a participar en el “Festival De La Cancion Ranchera” llevandose el tercer lugar.

Actualmente Carlos Arriaga esta promocionando su mas reciente album con temas de reconocidos compositores tales como Gitana, Llorando Otro Dolor, Me Equivoque Contigo, entre otras, bajo la direccion de Luna Entertainment Inc. Quienes ya preparan una gira por la union Americana y Canada en donde algunos de sus temas ya encabezan las listas de popularidad.

En diversos medios de comunicación se reporteó la noticia de que 1300 trabajadores de Salud del Estado “entraban al rubro laboral” (que de entrada esta frase raya en lo paradójico y contradictorio) con todas las prestaciones de ley. Tal noticia es presentada como reseña de una reunión efectuada el día 2 de junio 2009 en palacio de gobierno, que tenía por objetivo aportar propuestas por parte de altos funcionarios estatales (S. Fomento Social, Finanzas, Planeación, coordinación Medica de Servicios Estatales de Salud) a nosotros, un grupo de representantes de trabajadores sub-empleados y sin prestaciones laborales de diferentes hospitales del SES y del ICHISAL, y quienes habíamos hecho ya infinidad de peticiones de justicia laboral llevadas por nosotros mismos incluso hasta la instancia del Gobernador dada la falta de capacidad resolutiva por parte de directores y funcionarios de nuestros centros de trabajo  y Secretarías. Pero tal reunión resultó ser muy distante y diferente a lo que los medios de comunicación afirman. La reunión que se había pactado a petición expresa del Gobernador del Estado en reunión previa con él, era que se promovieran porpuestas y se tomaran acuerdo mediante negociaciones entre el grupo de funcionarios y nosotros como representantes de un numeroso grupo de empleados de contrato, eventuales y por honorarios de los hospitales de ICHISAL de varios municipios y del H. General DR. Salvador Zubirán, con el propósito de atender y dar soluciones posibles “dentro de lo deseable” a nuestros reclamos de justicia laboral (las cuales en todo momento aceptó como legítimos y justos).

            Sin embargo, la reunión no cumplió nunca tal cometido. NI un solo punto fue discutido. A continuación enumeramos los pormenores:

- Se invitaron a directores de los Hospitales (los cuales no aportaron cosas relevantes durante la reunión, aunque entiendo su presencia como parte del grupo de asesores).Sin embargo, eso no fue lo pactado previamente y no fuimos notificados ni se nos pidió nuestra opinión. Pudiera considerarse un punto irrelevante, pero sí lo consideramos un falta de respeto al pacto previamente establecido con el Lic. Campbell quien a nombre del Gobernador nos pidió desistiéramos de invitar a los diputados interesados en el tema, argumentando que el compromiso hecho con el Gobernador previamente era solo entre él y nosotros. Esto aparenta ser algo como: Te la hago aunque no te permito que tú me la hagas a mi, ¿como la ves?. Traducción: Intimidación y prepotencia.

- Invitaron a los dirigentes sindicales de los diferentes hospitales (más intimidación). Esos que nunca movieron un dedo por nosotros, esos que no les importó que lleváramos años en esta situación, esos que nos trataron déspotamente en múltiples ocasiones (y lo volvieron a hacer en esta reunión a la cual no tenían ni invitación ni capacidad resolutiva), esos que en todo momento han intimidado a enfermeras y enfermeros cuando han tratado de manifestar su inconformidad por no recibir aguinaldo, servicio medico, bonos e incapacidades. Esos que ahora también se llenan la boca de “privilegiar el dialogo” ¿? Esos, estuvieron presentes. Pues vaya que se tardaron varios años los tales lideres, privilegiando el dialogo (más de 15 años en algunos casos), tanto que ni siquiera lo expusieron y mucho menos lo propiciaron o lo moderaron entre nosotros y las autoridades de los diferentes institutos. Esos antecedentes hacen pensar mas bien que su presencia fue una clara evidencia del diálogo previamente entre sindicato y funcionarios públicos, el cual seguro si fué privilegiado y en lo oscurito para luego jactarse con la pantomima de que “hubo avance y buen logro para todos los trabajadores”. Por si tales falsedades son causa de falla de la memoria más que exceso de cinismo, les recordamos que todo lo conseguido (hasta la audiencia con el Sr. Gobernador) e incluso hasta el logro de “tales y supuestas 1300 plazas de trabajadores regularizadas” no deberá ser considerada sino como el fruto del esfuerzo y valentía para hacer presión por nuestra parte, trabajadores despojados de nuestras prestaciones por sus patrones y ninguneados por tales sindicatos charros; nosotros tuvimos las agallas de alzar la voz y la cabeza ante los que por años han estado privándonos de nuestros derechos constitucionales y legales.

            !Ah! Pero cuando ya el Gobernador dió el mandato de solucionar esto, prestos y al unísono los señores ahí estuvieron, pavoneándose de sus “logros mediante sus negociaciones” como lo afirman los reportajes, y lo mas increíble. ¡Aplaudían a nuestros verdugos cuando ellos nos callaban y nos echaban en cara que no nos darían lo que justamente y en apego a la ley habíamos solicitado en innumerables ocasiones y expuesto en 10 puntos que abarcaban todas nuestras prestaciones! ¡¡Aplaudían!!! ¿Pueden creerlo? El sindicato, supuesto defensor de los derechos laborales aplaudiéndole al patrón cuando este espetaba en nuestra cara el no darnos nuestras prestaciones! Pues ¡FELICIDADES! Solo les faltó un ¡denme una V…!, ¡denme una I…!, ¡denme una L…!, ¡denme otra L!,… etc, etc. ¿Que dice? ¡Villalobos, Villalobos, Villalobos! (vitoreándolo y dando de brinquitos y aplausitos). De antología; de verdad burdo y repugnante espectáculo marionetil.

           Y Por otro lado, desde el principio y hasta el final, lo que en todo momento refería el Lic. Villalobos era: -Desde este momento iniciamos el proceso de regularización-. Lo que nunca precisó fue la fecha en que se planea dar por concluida satisfactoriamente, pese a que el Gobernador solicitó resolver esto en cuestión días o a más tardar semanas, incluso antes de las elecciones. ¿Será? Y adivinen: ¿Qué consideraron como primer paso a realizar? Revisar expediente por expediente de cada trabajador en cada hospital. Suena más bien a persecución. A buscar pretextos para en lugar de regularizar tratar de obstaculizar amedrentar y tener pretextos para despedir a los que no son “cuates”, ¿no les parece? Espero que no sea tal el caso, porque a varios años de tener MILES de empleados entre sus filas y faltando a la observancia patronal de decenas de obligaciones legales de índole fiscal y laboral en la constitución Mexicana (art 123) y ley federal del trabajo, ahora resulta que valorarán si “cumplen el perfil o los requisitos” Brillante táctica patronal. Sutil y astuta intimidación reiterativa.

            Pero bueno, sea como fuere, y quiera colgarse tal logro de 1300 bases quien lo quiera hacer, solo queremos ver que se cumpla la frasecita. Retamos a los sindicatos a publicar las listas de los que fueron y serán catalogados como trabajadores para hacerles por fin justicia constitucional, revolucionaria y laboral. Queremos ver publicadas las listas con nombres, fecha de ingreso a la  nomina, hospital de adscripción y tiempo de haber trabajado sin base  así como la  antigüedad reconocida al momento de su basificación, con sus brillantes gestiones “sin manoteos”, como ellos cacarean. Lo queremos ver publicado en periódicos, con transparencia atendiendo al deber que tienen como institución gubernamental y/o sindical ante la sociedad y ante los agremiados que representan.

             COMPAÑEROS, SI 1300 PLAZAS SE HAN AUTORIZADO, ESO IMPLICA QUE TODOS LOS TRABAJADORES DE LOS HOSPITALES EMPLEADOS EN FORMA IRREGULAR EN EL HOSPITAL INFANTIL, CENTRAL, GENERAL, GINECO OBSTETRICA CUAUHTEMOC, GENERAL DE CUAHUTEMOC, GENRAL DE DELICIAS Y DEMÀS HOSPITALES ESTATALES YA ESTAMOS CON TODAS LAS PRESTACIONES DE LEY Y RECONOCIMIENTO DE ANTIGÜEDAD. ¡ENHORABUENA! ¡DESDE EL 2 DE JUNIO DE 2009! ¡AL FIN!

SI TAL NOTICIA ES CIERTA… DENLE GRACIAS AL CHARRINDICATO! (POR MI PARTE PASO)

             PERO SI NO LO VEMOS EN LOS HECHOS ANTES DE LAS PRÓXIMAS ELECCIONES, ¿COMO CONFIAREMOS NUESTRO VOTO A “REVOLUCIONARIOS” Y OTROS MAS QUE ATENTAN CONTRA LOS DERECHOS LABORALES CONQUISTADOS A BALA Y SANGRE POR NUESTROS HÉROES DE LA PATRIA?

¿Qué tal que un charro se les acerca en plena vía pública, pero en lugar de darles gusto, les da miedo porque les pone un machete en el cuello? Pues eso le pasó a Alfredo Barro, un chavo de 17 años que fue asaltado por Vicente Fernández, y no, no me refiero al intérprete de “Estos celos”, sino a un homónimo que, para colmo de males, después de despojar a su víctima de sus pertenencias, le obligaba a oírlo cantar, al más puro estilo de Bob Patiño en el capítulo de Los Simpson “Cabo de Miedoso”.

Lo curioso es que este chavo se salvó de chutarse toda la canción, en el momento en que Fernández cerró los ojos para inspirarse en la cantada y él pudo salir corriendo, para avisarle a unos patrulleros lo que ocurría. Lo inverosímil fue cuando le pidieron la descripción detallada del asaltante: un charro con machete en mano.

In English charreada translates to “bad-ass cowboys with sombreros.”  When I heard there was going to be a five-day charreada competition coming to town, part of a national circuit, I went and shot for three days in the hot hot Vallarta sun.  To my surprise none of the charros seemed to mind the presence of a tank-topped and flip-flopped gringo running around everywhere taking pictures.  The charros let me wander anywhere, complete access.  I got so close I nearly got clipped by steer falling at full speed.  

I got a lot of action shots; a lot of really awesome “bad-ass cowboys with sombreros” action shots.  But I feel it would be a disservice to Charrería to emphasize the speed and toughness without portraying it in the context of the culture and centuries-old traditions of this hacienda past time.

In the above photo a bull-rider kneels and prays just before mounting his bull.  Bull-riding is just one of the ten charreada events, including one for women.  All are tough, dangerous, and incredibly fun to watch.  I hope you enjoy these as much as I enjoyed taking them.  (11 Photos Total)
