There was lots of fuss a few months ago when the Gates Foundation gave a small(ish) number of states planning grants for Race to the Top. Now they’re doing the same for i3, according to Education Week.

This time, for i3, the chosen school district winners are: Philadelphia, New Haven, Conn., New Orleans, Minneapolis, Houston, and El Dorado County, Calif. In some cases, the grants are going directly to the district, or in other cases, the money is being awarded to the city, or one of the district’s philanthropic or nonprofit partners.

Also winning a grant is the Central Texas Education Stimulus Collaborative, which represents Austin and eight other school districts in the region, or about 200,000 students collectively. (In learning about this Texas collaborative, which brings together philanthropy and school districts, it seems like just the kind of thing the education department is looking for.)

The other winners are a group of five Los Angeles charter management organizations that make up the College-Ready Promise initiative, which also won a major teacher-reform grant from Gates, and two New York City charter organizations, the New York City Charter School Center and New Visions for Public Schools.

In making these funding choices, Gates is making clear what its view of innovation is: that charters and districts will work more collaboratively together on education reform. Officially, Chris Williams, a foundation spokesman, said these nine cities all have strong charter school sectors, with at least one high-quality charter management organization. And more broadly, Williams said, “We sought places where districts and charters were breaking through old barriers to transfer knowledge and information across organizational lines.”

This development seems (to me) to be a clear illustration of the maxim, “Luck favors the prepared.” It’s most obvious in the Austin example – these partners got their act together early and started talking before it was evident exactly where the stimulus funding would be going.

Some observers think Gates has too much to do with not just helping applicants prepare, but also on the Department of Education side (some of the key decision-makers there have worked for Gates). If that’s true, we’ll see i3 grants tilted heavily toward charter initiatives/partnerships. RTT already requires that states work with the charter sector.

Time has nearly run out for my Christmas Tree Project, I think I have about two and a half weeks before I have to stop and get it printed.

I did a trial run a couple of days ago, creating a large scale pdf chart that I should be able to get printed, at a normal print and copy shop without too much hassle. Using my Family Historian software it is quite straight forward to create the chart.

The research side of things is still ongoing, I have pretty much given up on find the three 4x great-grandparents that are still missing, although I may still be in with a chance of finding the mother of Sarah LAY if I can find her baptism record.

I still need to order a birth certificate for one of the children of Thomas and Rebecca BATEMAN to try and confirm Rebecca’s maiden name, although I am pretty certain it is TOWNSEND it would be nice to confirm it once and for all.

Other than that it is pretty much a case of filling in more gaps. Most recently I have been working through my ancestors making sure I have all the birth, baptism, marriage, death and burial details for them where possible. Most of these are not going to be exact dates, because I can’t afford to buy dozens of birth, marriage and death certificates.

In terms of census details I don’t think there is much more that needs finding, as I think I already have most of them, but I will have to have another check in a week or so just to make sure.

Next week I need to start work on the actual text scheme that is going to appear in the boxes on the chart. I am thinking about leaving out photos, because I don’t have enough of them, but I need to make a decision on that soon.

Even with the information that I have on my the tree so far I think it is going to look quite impressive, or at least I think it will, whether my relatives will be similarly impressed remains to be seen.

So I arrived home from work today and checked my post, and sure enough sitting there, in my mailbox, was the latest issue of Game Informer – the 200th issue no less.  In honour of their 200th issue, the team over at Game Informer decided to publish their list of the top 200 games of all time, so I thought I’d share some of the results with you.

Don’t panic, I’m not going to list all 200 with their reasoning, you’ll need to buy the magazine if you want that, but I thought I’d pull out a couple of highlights…

So, let’s begin at the beginning…  The top game of all time, the ultimate in gaming, the best there ever was?  Read on to find out…

Taking the top spot and pushing out all the rest was, from 1987, arguably unsurprisingly, The Legend of Zelda.

I realise there may be many cries of “Oh but we’ve come so far since then!  What about X, Y or Z?!” but they make some pretty good points in their justification.  As they stated, the Legend of Zelda is responsible for the creation of many lifelong gamers, not to mention future game developers.  This blast from the past may seem primitive in its style now, but it provided the starting point for many future developments, and for the 80’s it was pretty impressive! Shigeru Miyamoto can rest easy knowing that he did indeed create a level of greatness in the gaming industry that others could at that time barely aspire to, and that many have since credited this game as their inspiration.

So what else made it?  In their top 5 are others such as Super Mario Bros (#2), Tetris (#3), GTA III (#4), and Half Life 2(#5) – all very well known and pretty well respected games – it’s almost enough for me to have another bash at Half Life 2, which if I’m honest, never really grabbed me.  “But,” I hear you wail, “where is Mass Effect?!?!”  I know, I know, that was my response too!  So I scoured the lists, I turned page after page until I found it, and they do indeed bill it as “one of the greatest interactive tales we’ve ever experienced” but sadly, and clearly in an horrendous misprint, it only comes in at number 58!!  Despite my now clear disagreement with their positions, I read on anyway to see what else they had come up with…

Perhaps somewhat oddly, given their reasoning for Zelda winning overall, Ms Pac-Man made it into the top 10, whereas Pac-Man itself was held back at a mere 52nd place.  The various Final Fantasies pretty much all made it in, with FFIII the best of the bunch apparently at #8.  The various Mario games all seemed to rank pretty high, with good ol’ Sonic not getting a look in til #34.  Otherwise there are very few surprises, though one or two did make me raise an eyebrow…

Perhaps the biggest shocker personally (other than ME’s clearly incorrect placement) was Batman: Arkham Asylum.  Yes, I know it’s Batman, and yes, I realise to those who are not very discerning that automatically makes it super cool, and yes, the graphics were fantastic, but dear lord the gameplay is shocking.  One button takes out 5 enemies, and to me, that’s just not what this sort of game should be about, so seeing it at #104, above the much loved (by some) Borderlands for instance was a bit of a surprise.  Modern Warfare 2, for all the hype, only made it in at #181, and Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! was in the top 20!?!

So there you have it, a very brief summary of a very lengthy article.  I have no doubt that others will have their opinions on where things should or should not have been included, and which games should have been higher than others, so buy the magazine, read the full article and feel free to let me know what congratulations or exclamations I’ve overlooked, but don’t think you’ll change my mind on poor old Shepard…

Electronic-pop project Owl City currently has the #1 song on Billboard.com’s Digital Songs chart for the fourth week in a row. The song “Fireflies” first charted on the Digital Songs chart on September 9, 2009 and its strong digital sales has helped the band’s overall album sales. Chart position made its biggest jump from week 3 (September 19) at #50 to the next week (September 26) at #32. Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now”, Iyaz’s “Replay,” Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind,” and Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” round out the top five digital downloads this week (dated November 28, 2009).

Quả nhiên không ngoài dự đoán, các con cưng của bố Yang lần lượt xông trận và liên tiếp giành được những thành công khiến ai cũng phải băn khoăn: sao tài đâu mà lắm thế không biết^^~. Hết Park Bom với You and I làm bá chủ các bảng xếp hạng còn chưa kịp nguội lửa thì đã đến Wedding Dress của Tae Yang. Mọi người còn đang lo lắng trận tranh hùng này liệu có hồi kết hay không thì ngay lập tức hai thiên thần nhỏ tuổi của 2NE1- CL và Minzy- tiếp tục gây ngạc nhiên cho người nghe bằng sản phẩm Plz don’t go.

Bình thường chúng ta vẫn hay nói rằng: 2NE1 fighting, YG fighting để cổ vũ cho các bạn nhà mình,  nhưng mà bây giờ thì nó đang phát huy chính nghĩa thực của mình đấy^^. Đây quả là một chiến thuật khó hiểu nhất từ trước đến giờ của bố Yang mà tớ từng thấy, trước kia tớ vẫn cứ tưởng là bố Yang sẽ cho nhà YG chiếm lĩnh toàn bộ thị trường âm nhạc Hàn Quốc bằng cách sau khi G-Dragon kết thúc quảng bá cho album solo Heartbreaker thì sẽ đến  TaeYang liên tiếp Where you at và Wedding Dress ( chứ  còn full album của 2NE1 thì ngay từ đầu tớ đã không hy vọng sẽ có vì thời gian giữa mini album và full album quá dày trong khi nhóm mới debut), vậy là lúc nào trên các bảng xếp hạng cũng là gà nhà YG, nhưng bất ngờ đến tời điểm cuối năm lại có sự góp mặt của Park Bom, CL và Minzy. Vậy là khi bài nọ chưa kịp lắng xuống trong lòng người xem thì lại đã có bài khác, thời gian chỉ tính bằng tuần -28/10-13/11- 19/11.

Đã có lúc tớ nghĩ rằng nếu bố Yang cứ  để từ từ để người hâm mộ được từ từ cảm nhận rồi hãy ra tiếp thì có lẽ sẽ hay hơn rất nhiều chăng? Vì nếu dồn dập như thế, chỉ sợ rằng năm sau để lấy lại cường độ thế này sẽ rất khó và người hâm mộ sẽ có đôi chút hụt hẫng mất^^!!! Nhưng vì bố Yang là ông bố tuyệt vời nhất và YG Entertainment là gia đình tuyệt vời nhất nên dù bố Yang có làm gì đi chăng nữa thì vẫn sẽ là vì các con của mình, vì người hâm mộ ( trong đó có cả Black Jack chúng ta nữa đấy ) nên hãy luôn tin tưởng và ủng hộ bố cùng các con của bố, mọi người nhé. As reported in a breaking Billboard.com news story yesterday, Jay-Z earns his fourth Hot 100 No. 1 with “Empire State of Mind,” his collaboration with Alicia Keys. All of Jay-Z’s four chart-toppers have been collaborations, but this is his first No. 1as a lead or co-billed vocalist. The rap legend’s prior chart-topping entries came as a featured vocalist on Mariah Carey’s “Heartbreaker” (1999), his now-wife Beyonce’s “Crazy In Love” (2003) and Rihanna’s “Umbrella” (2007).

“Empire” is also Keys’ fourth overall No. 1, as she previously scaled the list with her debut single “Fallin’” (2001), her duet with Usher, “My Boo,” (2004) and “No One” (2007).

“Empire” takes Hot 100 Airplay Gainer honors as it rises 6-1 on Radio Songs (up 15 million listener impressions to 109.5 million), the largest climb to No. 1 on that chart since Kanye West’s “Stronger” jumped 7-1 in the Oct. 6, 2007, issue.

The other big story within the Hot 100 top 10 is the 22-5 move and a Digital Gainer nod for Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now.” The act, which won Vocal Group of the Year and Single of the Year (for “I Run To You”) on ABC’s “Country Music Awards” Nov. 11, performed “Need” on the highly rated broadcast.

As a result, digital downloads soared 162% to 157,000, the highest one-week sum for a song by a country group since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking digital sales in 2003. Among all country acts, only Taylor Swift has moved more downloads for a track in a single week.

Lady Antebellum is also the first country group to reach the Hot 100 top 10 since Dixie Chicks peaked at No. 4 with “Not Ready to Make Nice” in March 2007.

Owl City’s “Fireflies” falls from No. 1 to No. 2 once more, now having spent two single-week stints at the top of the list. Another recent No. 1, Jason DeRulo’s “Whatcha Say” holds at No. 3 and Iyaz’s “Replay” remains at No. 4.

Britney Spear’s “3″ rebounds 8-6, “Down” by Jay Sean Featuring Lil Wayne dips 5-7 and Miley Cyrus’ “Party In The U.S.A.” also falls two spots to No. 8. Ke$ha chimes in with her first top 10, “Tik Tok” (14-10), becoming the second female act to score a top 10 with her debut single this year, following Lady Gaga. And she appropriately follows Gaga on this week’s list as “Paparazzi” slips 7-9.

The Glee Cast has charted 14 songs on the Hot 100, and for the first time sees one track move up the chart as the troupe’s cover of the “Wicked” musical’s signature song “Defying Gravity” bounds 99-31. “Gravity’s” gain is a result of a 185% digital spike to 70,000 downloads. Not coincidentally, the “Wicked” Broadway cast album nets its best sales week since last Christmas (6,000; up 85%) and the original “Defying” by Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth has its best download week ever (9,000 downloads).

Hot Shot Debut honors go to “Give It Up To Me” by Shakira Featuring Lil Wayne, the second single from the Latin songstress from her upcoming “She Wolf, due Nov. 23. The track enters the chart with 25,000 first-week downloads and moves 30-29 on the Mainstream Top 40 chart.

Another interesting debut comes from California native Anya Marina, who enters at No. 88 with a cover or T.I.’s former No. 1 “Whatever You Like.” Her version was featured in a recent episode of the CW’s “Gossip Girl.”

John Mayer Headed To No. 1 On Billboard 200

The annual onslaught of big album releases has begun in earnest as a bevy of superstar acts are in the hunt for high debuts on next week’s Billboard 200 chart.

John Mayer is on track to debut at No. 1 with “Battle Studies,” which could sell somewhere between 275,000 and 300,000 copies by week’s end on Sunday (Nov. 22), according to industry sources. It will be the singer/songwriter’s second topper, following “Heavier Things” in 2003. “Heavier” bowed in the penthouse with 317,000 copies. Mayer’s last studio set, “Continuum,” entered the chart at No. 2 with 300,000 in 2006.

Mayer will likely lead a parade of who’s-who in music next week on the chart, as another nine albums are on track to debut inside the top 20. Next in line could be Casting Crowns‘ “Until the Whole World Hears,” with possibly as much as 175,000 copies. After that, 50 Cent’s “Before I Self Destruct” and Norah Jones‘ “The Fall” are vying for the third-highest debut, as each are estimated to sell around 150,000 copies.

Tween sensation Justin Bieber’s debut album, “My World,” could shift 100,000 copies while “American Idol” winner Kris Allen may see his debut effort move approximately 90,000 copies. Rock supergroup Them Crooked Vultures seems on track to sell about 75,000 with its first effort and Leona Lewis’ second album, “Echo,” may sell 50,000 to 60,000, as will Paul McCartney’s new live set “Good Evening New York City.”

As for the big-selling holdover titles on next week’s list, the largest will be Andrea Bocelli’s “My Christmas,” which should sell another 100,000 copies. So far in two weeks, it has moved 285,000 copies.

Next week’s chart competes with the Billboard 200 in 2008 when Beyonce’s “I Am … Sasha Fierce” blew in with 482,000 copies and Nickelback’s “Dark Horse” galloped into the runner-up slot with 326,000 copies. All told, the tally greeted six debuts in the top 10 and each of the top seven sets surpassed 100,000 copies.

Nielsen SoundScan’s sales tracking week, as reflected in Billboard’s sales charts, runs from Monday through Sunday of each week. Next week’s album charts will be revealed on Nov. 25 and will reflect data through the week ending Nov. 22.
