<p>E pelas mãos do já comentado Assis Chateaubriand que a TV Tupi tornou-se a primeira emissora do país.</p>
<p>Na primeira transmissão do dia 18 de setembro, Chatô estava dando um jantar para os seus amigos ricos em virtude da inauguração da sua emissora. Começou a demorar de mais para acontecer a transmissão&#8230;</p>
<p>Como as coisas no Brasil quase nunca saem perfeitas, não podia ter sido diferente.</p>
<p>Uma das câmeras que seria utilizada ness transmissão pifou. Prefiro acreditar que de 3 câmeras ficaram duas, porém outras fontes dizem que de 2 câmeras ficou apenas 1.</p>
<p><em>Vocês conseguem imaginar que loucura que foi? Se hoje em dias nos estúdios que tem mais de 5 câmeras 1 da problema e faz um transtorno na gravação, imagina essa situação!</em></p>

<p><em>O que vamos passar amanhã?</em></p>
<p>Ninguém fazia idéia. Começaram a correr contra o tempo para produzir a atração do dia seguinte e uma delas foi o IMAGENS DO DIA.</p>
<p>O telejornal consistia em passar as principais notícias, em imagens estáticas e uma voz narrando os fatos. Como no começo a televisão mais parecia um rádio televisionado, a maior enfase desse telejornal não era para as imagens e sim para o locutor.</p>
<p><em>A título de curiosidade quem conhece essa musiquinha?</em></p>
<p>Antes de se tornar jingle de cobertores, ela fora encomendada por Assis Chateaubriand. Ele não exitava em mandar metdade da sua audiencia ir dormir. O indizinho da TV Tupi era acompanhado pela musiquinha enquanto deitava em sua rede.</p>
<p>Nâo encontrei a versão com o indiozinho, então além de trazer a musiquinha, vem de brinde um comercial da época.</p>

<p>Yesterday, my partner Steve and I had some investor meetings and property tours scheduled for Palm Desert. We drove out in the afternoon, met with investors, had lunch with friends, and drove up to Banning to tour a possible new acquisition (a definite no-go on the property).</p>
<p>By the time we were finished with tours/meetings/conference calls, it was getting close to dinner time, so, we took our friends the Jiaras&#8217; and my mother to dinner at the Chop House.</p>
<p>Steve was wrapping up a conference call at around 6pm, so, I called the restaurant to get a reservation for 5 at 7pm. The hostess told me that the wouldn&#8217;t be able to seat us until 7:15 due to another large group coming in. That&#8217;s fine&#8230; I didn&#8217;t really expect it to be crowded on a Wednesday evening, but, that&#8217;s a good indication of a rebounding economy&#8230;</p>
<p>We arrived at the restaurant at almost exactly 7:15. Maybe 7:17 because Mr. Jiaras got himself locked inside his car and needed assistance getting out. (He parked in a spot where there was an electrical podium next to the spot and was unable to open his door. Mrs. Jiaras had taken the keys and walked over to greet us, so, he was locked in and couldn&#8217;t move the car without the keys&#8230; <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' />  )</p>
<p>As we walked into the restaurant, it was basically empty. You walk past a Maitre D&#8217; stand and there is a long bar to the right. Nobody there. In the dining room beyond the bar, there is a sea of empty tables with the exception of one two-top off to the right against the wall&#8230; Hmmm&#8230;. I wonder what happened to the &#8220;other large group&#8221; that was being seated at 7pm&#8230;</p>
<p>The waiter was adequate but clearly not a career waiter. He came and took our drink orders promptly after we were seated. A couple of martinis came out, some with &#8220;messy&#8221; bleu cheese stuffed olives and some without. I liked the term &#8220;messy&#8221; martini as opposed to &#8220;dirty&#8221;.</p>
<p>We ordered everything family style.</p>
<p>We started with a plate of saute&#8217;ed Sea Scallops served with creamed corn and wild mushrooms with a red wine reduction. These were pretty good. The scallops were seared on the outside, and warm sushi on the inside. Perfect. The mushroom and corn concoction went nicely.</p>
<p>We also ordered a batch of snails served in a garlic/herb/Pernod butter. Generally, snails are simply a garlic and butter delivery system. But, these were also pretty tasty. The compound butter was perfect and got sopped up with bread once the snails were gone.</p>
<p>After the appetizers came the salad course. It was the Chop Chop salad (or, garbage salad if you&#8217;re from Chicago). This was tasty. Chopped up lettuce, radicchio, onion, mushrooms, bleu cheese, green olives, hard-boiled egg, smoked bacon, and 1000 island dressing. The whole thing is plated like a small terrine and topped with a thin slice of green apple. Tasty! This would work as a meal in itself.</p>
<p>For our main course, we ordered two Chateaubriand for the table. The Chateaubriand was intended for two, but, we figured that it would be fine to split it into five plates. We expected it to be carved and plated table side. Kind of like they do at <a title="Nick and Sam's Steakhouse Dallas" href="http://troydowning.wordpress.com/2009/09/06/nick-and-sams-an-uptown-steak-house/" target="_blank">Nick and Sam&#8217;s</a> in Dallas. We ordered it medium-rare, of course, and had a couple of issues with the delivery.</p>
<p>First off, we were pretty clear that we wanted it carved and plated table side. The waiter agreed, but, came out and asked about having the kitchen split it up. I re-iterated &#8220;table-side would be better&#8221;. Well, they did bring it table-side, and kind of arranged it on plates table side, but, it had clearly been carved in the kitchen. First ding&#8230; Secondly, they only divided it into 4 portions. So, when the waiter asked how everything was, Steve looked down at his empty plate and said &#8220;I didn&#8217;t get any meat!&#8221;</p>
<p>The confused waiter scurried off as we passed around pieces of the filet that had already been carved and plated in front of the rest of us.</p>
<p>The filet was fine. Tender and simple. It was not served with the bone which was a HUGE disappointment. What&#8217;s a Chateaubriand without the bones to gnaw on afterward? Philistines! Troglodytes! Again, I missed the well-seasoned, tender, and tasty bones left at the table, on a cutting board that you&#8217;d find at Nick and Sam&#8217;s.</p>
<p>The filet was served plain with a small grilled tomato and a plate of luke-warm sauces to accompany. The sauces were a béarnaise and a roasted shallot cabernet. They may have been ok if they had been a little warmer. Béarnaise served just above room temperature wasn&#8217;t quite right to douse a hunk of filet mignon with.</p>
<p>For the sides, we ordered a plate of grilled asparagus with luke-warm béarnaise, saute&#8217;ed gnocchi, applewood bacon and three-cheese Mac-n-cheese, and a plate of saute&#8217;ed wild mushrooms.</p>
<p>The mushrooms were pretty good. The gnocchi was dense and starchy, with a nice big of glisten from the oil it was saute&#8217;ed in, and rounded out with some aromatic herbs. Can&#8217;t really go wrong with grilled asparagus, and the Mac-n-cheese was just &#8220;ok&#8221;. It was large, penne-type pasta. Cheezy with bits of bacon. I thought that it would be better with macaroni rather than penne. After all, we didn&#8217;t order &#8220;Pen-n-Cheese&#8221;.</p>
<p>We coupled the meal with a bottle of 2005 Alexander Valley Silver Oak Cabernet at about $120. I know, cliche&#8217;, but, it was a good choice. Cherry on the nose, tannins on the back, young but tasty. Probably $70 at the store, but, not too out of had at $120 in a restaurant.</p>
<p>We wrapped up dinner with a chocolate cake, a Crème brûlée, and some espresso. I&#8217;m not a big dessert fan, but these seemed fine.</p>
<p>Altogether, it was a fine dining experience. The Waiter was a little immature but was trying. I thought it was odd that the restaurant was empty when we arrived and empty when we left, but, they couldn&#8217;t take a reservation for 7pm. I was also a little disappointed that the Chateaubriand wasn&#8217;t better presented and that the sauces weren&#8217;t warmer. In addition, the waiter should have at least apologized for serving Steve an empty plate.</p>
<p>But, we had a good time and for the most part, the food was just fine.</p>

<p>Digam olá para <strong>Assis Chateaubriand</strong>.</p>
<p><em>Tá, ja sei o nome dele! Mas o que tem de mais nisso?</em> (Você   deve estar se perguntando isso agora)</p>
<p>Este Paraibano, de Umbuzeiro, foi o responsável pela chegada da televisão ao Brasil, em 1950.</p>
<p>Menino que teve um desenvolvimento conturbado devido a sua gagueira e ao fato de ser pequeno e magrinho, transformou-se em um dos mais poderosos da comunicação brasileira. Fazendo referencia ao título do livro que traz a biografia de Chateaubriand, podemos dizer, <strong>Chatô foi o Rei do Brasil</strong>.</p>
<p>Ele queria ele fazia, assim foi com tudo durante a sua vida e não ia deixar de ser com a televisão.</p>
<p>Fundou em São Paulo a TV TUPI difusora e para que a primeira transmissão oficial acontecesse em setembro de 1950, contrabandeou 200 aparelhos receptores e espalhou em pontos estratégicos da cidade de São Paulo.</p>
<p>Dizem também, que ele fez algumas manobras para que a sua emissora fosse a primeira do Brasil, atrasando alguns processos da TV Record.</p>
<p>A primeira transmissão de fato ocorreu no dia 18 de setembro de 1950, trazendo o espetáculo chamado <em>TV NA TABA</em>, que contou com um time de peso, senod em sua amioria profissionais do rádio.</p>
<p>Para nós que as vezes vemos os bastidores dos programas de hoje e sabemos de toda a tecnologia, é dificil acreditar que naquela época orquestras inteiras eram colocadas dentro dos estúdios para fazer a trilha sonora dos programas, que os comerciais eram feitos ao vivo e que tudo que se errasse ia para o ar.</p>
<p>Tudo isso acontecia por que não existia o video tape, então não era possivel gravar nenhuma programação, somente alguns comerciais e filmes, porque eram gravados em película, mas era bastante caro.</p>
<p>Falando em altos preços, quando a televisão chegou ao Brasil ela era um privilégio para poucos. Ter um aparelho desse na sala de casa e uma antena no telhao dava status para a família. Por causa disso, os vizinhos abriam suas casas para que aqueles que não tinham TV pudessem acompanhar a novidade. Esses encontros eram praticamente eventos, era suco e bolo pra todo mundo.</p>

Las primeras reacciones de Rajoy ante el secuestro del <em>Alakrana</em> nada tienen que ver con las últimas de Cospedal. Donde hubo demagogia a raudales, hay sensatez; donde hubo patrioterismo desenfrenado, hay razón de Estado. Con excepción de Feijóo y Basagoiti, el resto de los dirigentes del Partido Popular no ha evitado la tentación de instrumentalizar la suerte de los pescadores del atunero contra el Gobierno de Zapatero. Finalmente, todos hablan como hablaron desde el principio los líderes de la derecha vasca y gallega. Ahora, es urgente su segunda rectificación.<br />
¿ Cual es ? Según González Pons en el ministerio de Interior habita un monstruo que puede vigilar como escuchar a todos los españoles. Su nombre es <em>Sitel</em>. Se trata de un sistema de interceptación de las comunicaciones comprado por Rajoy cuando era titular de dicho departamento y puesto en marcha por su sucesor Acebes. Es ahora, bajo Rubalcaba, cuando al parecer, siempre en opinión de los líderes populares, se ha convertido en un amenaza para la supervivencia del Estado de Derecho. Como consecuencia, asistimos a toda una sinfonía de disparates sobre  el Estado Policial de Zapatero.<br />
¿ Por qué? Se busca, obviamente, la anulación de todas las investigaciones policiales y judiciales sobre la trama <em>Gürtel </em>cuando aún permanecen bajo secreto las dos terceras partes de su sumario. Del brazo de los exponentes de la llamada <em>izquierda abertzale</em>, que persigue igualmente anular los procedimientos en marcha contra quienes recomponer una organización ilegal, los populares desacreditan todo nuestro sistema judicial y político. Codo a codo, los vecinos a <em>Eta y Gürtel</em>, suman esfuerzos y argumentos para que sus presos salgan a la calle y no tengan que sentarse en el banquillo de los acusados.<br />
Urge, pues, la segunda rectificación del Partido Popular. Explícita e implícitamente están moralmente obligados a decir digo donde frívolamente dijeron Diego. Si no vacilaron ayer en poner el Estado de Derecho patas arriba para echar a González, carecen hoy de los pretextos de entonces para repetir esta siniestra maniobra para echar a Zapatero. Si es lógico que Batasuna sea brazo de los terroristas, no lo es que el Partido Popular lo sea de los corruptos. Es urgente quebrar esta imagen descrita por Chateaubriand. La corrupción del PP de la mano del terror de Eta.</p>

Granted, it doesn&#8217;t have the same flavor as a lot of other cuts of beef, but the luxurious texture and elegant preparations make this a great special-occasion cut of meat. Compared to other cuts, there&#8217;s not much available from one cow, and on top of that demand for this good stuff is really high. So, we&#8217;re not reporting news to tell you that this is frequently the most expensive cut of meat you can find &#8211; sometimes as high as $22.99 just from a regular cow in a regular grocery store!</p>
<p>So, what&#8217;s with the title of this post? Beef tenderloin doesn&#8217;t have to be incredibly expensive to be incredibly delicious. It takes some bravery, patience, and dedication on your part, but you can get good, delicious beef tenderloin for a lot more frugal of a price than you would think.</p>

<p style="text-align:left;">&#8220;Los fragmentos autógrafos de Chateaubriand, titulados <em>Amor y Vejez</em> por su primer poseedor (un oscuro polígrafo llamado Édouard Bricon, quien los había recibido, a partir de enero de 1845, de un indelicado secretario del escritor), no vieron la luz hasta diez años después de que Bricon los donase, en 1852, a la Bibliotèque Nationale. Con ocasión de uno de sus <em>Lunes, </em>el 24 de Abril de 1862, Sainte-Beuve se deleitó en prepublicar algunos extractos de estos inéditos, guardándose mucho de hacer públicas sus fuentes. Calificando estas págias de &#60;&#60;confesión delirante&#62;&#62;, el crítico los presentaba, con su perspicacia habitual, como una nueva &#60;&#60;fase&#62;&#62;, para el envejecido autor de <em>René</em>, de su autorretrato como <em>homo eroticissimus vel christianissimus</em> , que había insertado en 1802 justo ene medio de <em>El genio de cristianismo</em> .</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Esta novela de juventud ilustrada la tesis del apologista laico según la cual la espada del Evangelio, lejos de hacer de los cristianos unos platónicos desencarnados, había introducido en su carne el áspero aguijón de la inquietud moderna, una &#60;&#60;oleada de pasiones&#62;&#62; fecunda para el genio de las artes y de la poesía, si no para el perfeccionamiento de los santos. El autor de <em>El genio del cristianismo</em> no es condía que el <em>eros</em> cristiano, entrevisto en la Antigüedad pagana por los poetas elegíacos, tenía vocación de &#60;&#60;vivir peligrosamente&#62;&#62;, en una estrecha <em>vía intermedia</em>, entre dos principios, el infierno y la locura. Marcado por el pecado original, desafiado y confundido por las dichas del <em>ágape</em> divino, el <em>eros</em> cristiano está condenado al crimen por su caída en la carne y la vergüenza humanas, a la vez que es exaltado hasta la locura por la intuición de la felicidad infinita y absoluta que el deseo humano no puede encontrar más que en la unión mística con el Dios celebrado por el Cantar de los Cantares. Desgarrado entre dos extremos, el uno prohibido y el otro inaccesible a los amantes laicos, ese <em>eros</em> moderno escapa por lo menos tanto a la tibieza, a la que Dios arroja de su boca, como al libertinaje casanoviano y a la violencia sacrílega de la parafernalia erótica sadiana. El capítulo referente a la &#60;&#60;oleada de las pasiones&#62;&#62;, en <em>El genio del cristianismo, </em>pintaba una comunión literaria de pecadores cristianos y laicos, cuyo ejemplo era el personaje de René, un anillo exterior de la comunión de los santos.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">De este primer René, joven vagabundo dominado por un hastío perpetuo y de un deseo tan impaciente como infinito, siempre frustrado por falta del objeto que lo colme, Sainte-Beuve había escrito en 1832: &#60;&#60;Se salvará porque es poeta&#62;&#62;. El esbozo de un René viejo (no concluido, en estado totalmente crudo, impublicable) cuya existencia revelaba el crítico veinte años después, le parecía que reiteraba, en la misma línea prebaudelariana, pero con redoblada audacia, esa interpretación inédira, antiplatónica y laica, de los dogmas católicos de la Caída, la Encarnación y la Resurreción de la Carne:</p>

<p style="text-align:left;">Veo en él&#8211;escribía&#8211;una confesión, una negativa casi parecida [a la de René], aunque en un tono muy distinto, una confesión en la que se pinta, una vez más, esa apasionada y delirante naturaleza de René [...]. Más la efusión no acaba aquí, sino que se prolonga en mil suposiciones, pero la nota está dada, y me paro. Es verdad que tales acentos no dañan ni a la vejez ni a la memoria de Chateaubriand, el René Patriarca no queda por debajo del René de <em>Los nátchez</em> [la epopeya de juventud de la que habían sido extraídos el personaje y la novela de 1802]. ¡Qué ebriedad hasta en las reflexiones, qué fuego! El rechazo [...] de Chateaubriand es ardiente, apasionado, voluptuoso. Pese a alejarse y rehusar el halago, no le desagradaría conquistar, agitar ese corazón joven, dejar en él una turbación, un largo remordimiento, un germen inmortal, una gota de filtro que, aunque incapaz ya de dar, sí sabe al menos corromper y envejecer la felicidad.</p>
</blockquote>
<p style="text-align:left;">Esas páginas que, en cierto modo, Sainte-Beuve nos escamotea dándonos sólo una idea discreta de ellas, no fueron descubiertas en la Bibliotèque  Nationale hasta 1890 por el especialista en Chateaubriand Victor Giraund, ¡quien, por su parte, no preparó la primera edición crítica hasta 1922! Revisado por Jean Pommier, en su propia edición crítica de 1946, es ese mismo texto adoptado a su vez por Jean-Claude Berchet en las <em>addenda</em> de su edición clásica de las <em>Memorias de ultratumba</em> el que ha sido elegido como base para esta edición.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Sainte-Beuve había visto con acierto: mientras escribía y reescribía desde 1832 las <em>Memorias de ultratumba, </em>y redactaba la última obra publicada en vida, en 1844, la <em>Vida de Rancé, </em>Chateaubriand tenía también comenzado el esbozo de un segundo <em>René</em>, su autorretrato como viejo Anacreonte cristiano. Sin duda dio instrucciones de destruirlo a su secretario, quien prefirió el lucro personal al fuego de la chimenea. Ya antes había sembrado al voleo, tanto en las <em>Memorias de Ultratumba</em> como en la<em> Vida de Rancé</em>, algunos rasgos de ese autorretrato como anciano asaltado en el desierto por la tentación, pero negándose a ella con &#60;&#60;lágrimas de hiel&#62;&#62;.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">En las <em>Memorias</em>, a propósito del relato de su reciente estancia forzada en Waldmünchen, donde las jóvenes campesinas alemanas no le dejan indiferente, aunque se contente con comérselas con los ojos, se atreve a escribir, oponiendo su moderación de anciano a las aventuras galantes de su juventud.</p>

<p style="text-align:left;">Si tuviera veinte años, iría en busca de algunas aventuras [...]. En otro tiempo estaba muy ligado a mi cuerpo; le aconsejaba vivir prudentemente, a fin de mostrarse muy gallardo y vigoroso de ahí a cuarenta años. Él se burlaba de los sermones de mi alma, obstinándose en divertirse, y se le daba una higa llgar a saer un día lo que se llama hombre bien conservado: &#60;&#60;¡Al diablo!&#8211;decía&#8211;,¿qué ganaría escatimando en la flor de la vida para disfrutar de alegrías de este mundo cuando nadie quiera ya compartirlas conmigo?&#62;&#62;. Y se entregaba a una alegría loca. Estoy pues, obligado a aceptarlo tal como es ahora.</p>

<p>            Napoleon Bonaparte, the self appointed Emperor of France, gathered a large army &#8220;La Grande Armee&#8221;.  This army was over 680,000 soldiers strong, including 175,000 cavalry men.  The Big Army converged from many parts of Europe to Dresden; it included 270,000 French soldiers, 20,000 Italians, 80,000 from the Rhine Confederacy, 30,000 from Poland, 30,000 from the Austrian Empire, and 20,000 from Prussia.  The objective was to punish the Russian Czar Alexander I.  No one among the politicians and the Generals saw any cause for this war.  The Czar simply was the only independent monarch in the European continent not to obey promptly to the ducats of the Emperor.  Napoleon&#8217;s avowed reason for this war was that Alexander I did not sign on a tariff treaty that bind all the other monarchies in Continental Europe and thus was alienated from the continental system.</p>
<p>            Napoleon declared war unilaterally on June 22, 1812 at Wilkowiski proclaiming that second Polish war has started.  The army needed 3 days to cross the Niemen River to the Russian frontier; no enemy army was waiting to give battle to Bonaparte. In Witepsk he had a second thought of postponing the invasion to next year because he sensed that it was dangerous to remain in Russia during the coming winter season.  Then, as the Czar refused to reply to his letters or envoys for negotiation Bonaparte got pretty upset; he reasoned &#8220;Moscow, the Saint City with hundreds of churches and the remaining bastion of Christianity, is 20 days march for the army.  By the time the Czar calls up his recruits he will be in Moscow.  The Czar will be forced to initiate negotiation.&#8221;</p>
<p>            The Russian army under Barclay refused Bonaparte battles and continued its retreat toward Moscow.  There was a battle at the city of Smolensk; Bonaparte could either attack Moscow or move toward Saint Petersbourg where the Czar resided; he opted for the Capital Moscow.  General Kutuzov replaced Barclay at the head of the Russian army.  A major battle took place on Borodino or Moskowa on September 6; the two armies were equal in numbers of about 125,000 but the Russians had strong defenses. One thousand canons from both sides are vomiting fire; 80,000 perished in 5 hours of engagement, including over 50 generals from both sides; cold rain and violent wind dominated the dark landscape. The Imperial guard of 25,000 strong did not participate in the battle; Marechal Ney exploded &#8220;Since the Emperor refuses to be a General then let him go back to Paris and be Emperor&#8221;</p>
<p>            Bonaparte saw Moscow on September 14; the Russian troops had vacated their Capital. Emperor Bonaparte moved in the Kremlin the next day. The third day Moscow was burned down by order of its Russian&#8217;s governor Rostopschine; all the Russian prisoners were let out of jails with ordered to burn their Capital. General Kutuzoff who had moved east returned toward Voronowo. </p>
<p>            Napoleon wavered for an entire month for the next step; he could have marched to Saint Petersburg to force the Czar to negotiate but he opted to wait for the Czar to take the initiative for a political settlement.  Napoleon decided to retreat by October 18; he had ordered Marechal Mortier to blow up the Kremlin after he leaves; it was done at 1:30 am on October 23.  </p>
<p>            Bonaparte decided to take a different route but was forced to follow the same route to Smolensk because the troops of Kutuzoff had blocked the way.  The French army had to watch the previous battlefields; the carcasses were still strewn everywhere and the wolves were roaming.  The harsh Russian winter arrived during the long retreat. Over 300,000 of the Big Army died mostly of frost, famine, drowning, and diseases within two months of the retreat.  Of the thousands of horses only 1,500 remained. All canons, carriages, and baggage were left behind for lack of horses.</p>
<p>            Napoleon parted with his army and returned to Paris to take care of &#8220;revolts&#8221;. Only about 120 thousands French soldiers arrived to their homelands; there are no documents how many of the survivors lived within weeks after arriving home. Napoleon wrote to the French Senate &#8220;Your Emperor never felt healthier during the entire campaign&#8221;. </p>
<p>            The Russian army could have easily captured Napoleon as prisoner and totally eliminate the remaining French regiments but it must have been a political decision to let Bonaparte return safe and sound to Paris.  Europe did not expect the disintegration of the French army so quickly and thus had no political alternatives after Napoleon.  It was better to keep Napoleon as the target enemy to unite Europe against a unique enemy than to start political infighting among the monarchs.</p>
<p>            The worst crossing was the Beresina River. What happened before and during the crossing of the Beresina River? Bonaparte just wrote &#8220;The French army crossed the Beresina&#8221;; period. My next post will expose the harrowing details.</p>

<p><strong>Note:</strong> My contention for this war is simple.  Napoleon was feling terribly bored. I was the master of Europe. He was bored by his new wife Emperess Marie-Louise of Austria; he was a new dad. Administration was giving him terrible headache.  He needed a long excursion at the head of the largest army; he wanted to break new Guiness records.  This topic was from Chateaubriand.</p>

<title><![CDATA[MANOS, OJOS  Y  BOCA  DE  VENECIA]]></title>

<p>El último número en español de <strong>National Geographic</strong> está dedicado a <strong>Venecia</strong> y yo recuerdo que cuando la mano se posa sobre el lomo de aquellos canales podemos notar, como dice en su delicioso y pequeño libro <strong>Tiziano Scarpa</strong>, que &#8220;<strong>Venecia es un</strong> <strong>pez</strong>&#8221; (<em>Minúscula</em>), una ciudad de agua,  silencio escurrido sobre ese &#8220;lenguado colosal tendido al fondo&#8221;. <strong>Venecia </strong>igualmente es tortuga, los pies de<strong> Venecia</strong> levantan escalones al costado de alcantarillas y canales, <strong>Venecia</strong> es mano sobre piedras y parapetos, <strong>Venecia</strong> son olores, &#8220;<em>como en el arsenal de los venecianos </em> (dice <strong>Dante</strong> en &#8220;<strong>El Infierno</strong>&#8220;)  <em>hierve en invierno el pegajoso alquitrán para embrear los barcos</em> <em>averiados que no pueden navegar</em>&#8220;. &#8221;L<em>os</em> <em>más hediondos canales</em> - recuerda<strong> Scarpa </strong> ( y él ha nacido en <strong>Venecia </strong>)- <em>son el río delle <strong>Muneghéte</strong>, en la frontera entre</em> <em>los barrios de <strong>Santa Croce</strong> y <strong>San Polo</strong>, y el recodo apestoso entre la <strong>Fondamenta del Remedio y el Sotopòrtego de la Stua</strong>&#8220;<strong>;</strong></em> <strong>Venecia</strong> es<strong> </strong>también oído, oído del acordeón y de la góndola, escucha de la cadencia del agua, cabeceo de los vaivenes sobre  los que en alguna ocasión hablé ya en <strong><a href="http://misiglo.wordpress.com/2008/12/06/venecia-el-silencio-los-ruidos/">Mi Siglo</a></strong>.</p>

<p><strong>Venecia</strong> es ojo. &#8220;La belleza te asalta a fachadas &#8211; <em>dice</em> <strong>Scarpa</strong> -, te abofetea, te golpea. (&#8230;) Las ventanas de las casas están exageradamente cerca de las esquinas, asoman al máximo por la proa angular de los edificios para captar la mayor cantidad de luz posible, reflejarla de inmediato sobre la pared adyacente y proyectarla dentro de la habitación&#8221;.</p>
<p><strong>Venecia</strong> es boca también. Se muerden los bocados de su alfabeto y se disfruta a la vez con los &#8220;<em>bìgoli in salsa</em>&#8220;, los espaguetis agujereados con salsa de sofrito de cebolla y anchoas en salmuera.</p>

<p>Y por fin &#8211; entre muchas cosas más - <strong>Venecia</strong> son libros, autores, obras. <strong>Musset y</strong> <strong>George Sand, Chateaubriand, D ´Anunnzio, Balzac, Dickens, Proust, Mann, Henry James, Mark Twain, Saul Bellow, Ruskin, Dino Buzzati, Kafka, Walter Benjamín</strong>&#8230;, la lista sería interminable. <strong>Hotel San Marco, Hotel Sandwirth, Hotel Gritti Palace, Hotel de Europa,</strong> <strong>Hotel Danieli, Hotel Bellevue et de Russie</strong>&#8230;; por allí estuvieron las mentes y las plumas creando anotaciones, llenando cuadernos&#8230; El pez de la ciudad bajaba mientras tanto entre canales, manso,  pasaba despacio bajo el puente de <strong>Rialto </strong>y, para no distraer a quienes escribían, apenas hacía ruido.</p>

<p>On va commencer par un peu de géographie &#8230;<br />
Chateaubriant se trouve donc en Loire Atlantique ( c&#8217;est bien, vous suivez ! ),  au nord du département, à 55 km au sud de Rennes, 70 km au nord-est de Nantes et 73 km au nord-ouest d&#8217;Angers.<br />
Après, vous pourrez plus me dire que vous savez pas où c&#8217;est <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';)' class='wp-smiley' />  ( hein Méli ? ^^ )<br />

Arrivée sur Chateaubriant, avec au loin, le Château &#8230; de Chateaubriant ! Hu hu hu, comment ça va faire des vilaines répétitions cette affaire.<br />

Au pied du château coule la Chère, une rivière de 65 kilomètres qui se jette dans la Vilaine, au niveau de Ste Anne sur Vilaine.<br />
On présume donc ( nous hein, pas les historiens )qu&#8217;autrefois, elle remplissait les douves du château.<br />

Le chateau, justement, le voici. Il s&#8217;agit d&#8217;une forteresse médiévale, fortement remaniée à la Renaissance. Vous allez d&#8217;ailleurs pouvoir en juger en regardant nos clichés.<br />
On est parti en balade tout autour du chateau, en le contournant dans le sens des aiguilles d&#8217;une montre.<br />

La forteresse faisait partie des Marches de Bretagne ( avec Vitré, Fougères, Ancenis et Clisson ) frontière chargée de défendre la Bretagne face au royaume de France. Il est le pendant breton du <a href="http://www.villagesdefrance.free.fr/dept/dept_images/ph49_pouance.jpg">château médiéval de Pouancé</a>.<br />
Donc le premier qui me dit que la Loire Atlantique c&#8217;est pas vraiment la Bretagne, je sors le martinet <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';)' class='wp-smiley' /><br />

La forteresse initiale fut édifiée au 11eme siècle par Brient, fils de Dame Innogwen. Une cité de développa autour et fut nommé Chateaubriant.<br />
Aux 13 et 14emes siecles, les seigneurs de Chateaubriant firent évoluer la forteresse en chateau fort complet, apte à assurer sa fonction défensive.<br />

Plus on fait le tour du chateau, plus on se rend compte que le style Renaissance prend le pas sur le chateau médiéval.<br />

Puis on rentre dans le chateau par le <strong>Pavillon des champs</strong> ( la sorte de tour sur la droite de la photo, sauf que pour la photo, on était deja dans l&#8217;enceinte <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif' alt=';)' class='wp-smiley' />  )<br />
C&#8217;est le premier châtelet permettant l&#8217;accès à la basse cour. Il est construit à la fin du <span title="Nombre écrit en chiffres romains">14eme</span> siècle et fortement remanié au <span title="Nombre écrit en chiffres romains">16eme siecle</span> lors de la construction de la galerie sud.<br />

On avance, et suprise, une petite porte sur notre gauche, donnant sur une longue galerie.<br />
Il s&#8217;agit de <strong>la galerie renaissance,</strong> qui était autrefois recouverte d&#8217;un crépi blanc pour assurer l&#8217;unité architecturale de l&#8217;ensemble.<br />

Par chance lors de notre promenade, on a eu le château pour nous, on a juste croisé un couple qui visitait.<br />

Une partie du logis, qui semble être devenu une sorte de restaurant / terrasse, avec quelques transats pour prendre le soleil face au donjon médiéval.<br />

Quelque part dans les jardins, au hasard de notre promenade, une colonnade. Dommage, pas de panneau explicatif pour nous en apprendre davantage. Notre curiosité reste donc entiere &#8230;<br />

Puis on repasse une sorte de porte, nous faisant fortement penser à la <a href="http://www.vos-photos.eu/photo_12082_7.jpg">Porte St Michel de Guérande</a>, qui nous mene à la partie administrative du site.<br />

En effet, depuis 1853 et le rachat des batiments par le Conseil Général de Loire Atlantique, l&#8217;enceinte du chateau abrite la Sous- Préfecture, le Trésor Public et le Tribunal d&#8217;Instance.<br />

Et j&#8217;aime cette vue d&#8217;au dessus qui monte bien le coté bien rectiligne d&#8217;un des murets ^^<br />

La chapelle, au nord de la cour, date des 12 et 13emes siecles et a été transformée pour y constituer un <strong>Logis du Chapelain</strong> dans sa partie Ouest.<br />

Bon, la, je vous avoue, que j&#8217;ai pas fais ma maline hein. Avec ma peur des hauteurs, ca été épique de grimper sur les remparts. Surtout que par moments, le sol était juste une plaque métallique quadrillée où on avait le bonheur de voir le plancher des vaches, sous nos petits petons, 4 ou 5 mètres plus bas.<br />

Après la visite du château, on était optimistes en voulant faire une balade dans la ville. On avait préjugé de nos forces dans les mollets et on est vite retournés à la voiture ^^<br />

<title><![CDATA[Chateaubriand, l’anti Robespierre colpisce ancora]]></title>

Poesia e terrore (Adelphi, 806 pagine, 55 euro). Avendo l’autore delle Memorie d’oltretomba per testimone, attore e interprete, lo studioso francese se ne serve per dipingere lo strepitoso affresco di quello che è stato il passaggio fra l’Ancien Régime e il Mondo nuovo. Ciò che ne emerge non riguarda tanto o solo un cambiamento di regime &#8211; una rivoluzione, una guerra civile &#8211; ma la fine di una Francia tradizionale e plurisecolare, con tutto ciò che essa significava in termini di arte, di cultura, di religione, di modo di vivere, insomma, e la modernità che ne prende il posto con al completo il suo corteo di novità: nuovi rapporti umani, nuovi rapporti sociali, nuove aspettative, una nuova cultura. Una fine e un inizio bagnati nel sangue e in qualche modo dal sangue eternamente segnati: l’Otto e il Novecento si portano dietro l’eredità degli Stati nazionali e della leva di massa, delle guerre patriottiche e della propaganda di parte, della tirannia della maggioranza e delle avanguardie intellettuali, dei totalitarismi ideologici e di quelli politici&#8230;<!--more--></p>
<p>Conservatore, ma non reazionario, Chateaubriand vede là dove il democratico illiberale Robespierre e l’aristocratico illiberale Talleyrand non riescono ad andare. Non si tratta della «virtù in un solo Paese» teorizzata dal primo, o della «restaurazione in tutto il continente» perseguita dal secondo: «Io non credo nella società europea. Fra cinquant’anni non ci sarà più un solo sovrano legittimo, dalla Russia alla Sicilia&#8230; Non prevedo che dispotismi militari. E tra cent’anni&#8230; può darsi che noi stiamo vivendo non solo nella decrepitezza dell’Europa, ma in quella del mondo».</p>
<p>Solo chi ha virtù profetiche è in grado di analizzare cosa quel cambiamento, un vero e proprio olocausto etnico-culturale abbia provocato e ancora provocherà. I suoi artefici non se ne rendono conto e anche per questo Robespierre in fondo resta un mistero, perché nel suo inseguire una Francia virtuosa, austera e democratica, il suo modello non è in un futuro da costruire, ma in una Sparta da riportare in vita. È l’eterogenesi dei fini che si impone: la modernità che si spalanca mentre si cercava un’altra tradizione. Chateaubriand, che della Rivoluzione è vittima e testimone passivo, capisce invece che cosa da essa scaturirà: ne comprende anche l’ineluttabilità e l’impossibilità di tornare al mondo precedente come se nulla fosse. È anche per questo che, letti oggi, i volumi in cui Robespierre descrive la sua Repubblica ideale appaiono senza vita, laddove gli interrogativi sul destino e sul futuro della politica di Chateaubriand restano nostri contemporanei: «La democrazia non solo fa dimenticare a ogni uomo i suoi avi, ma gli nasconde i suoi discendenti e lo separa dai suoi contemporanei; essa lo riporta continuamente solo a se stesso e minaccia di rinchiuderlo per intero nella solitudine del proprio io».</p>
<p>Ogniqualvolta si ritorna a Chateaubriand, l’antica ammirazione e irritazione si ripresenta immutata. Fu il grande scrittore del proprio tempo, quello che la generazione successiva dei Flaubert e dei Baudelaire continuerà a celebrare, e sul quale però la maledizione di Stendhal, «a partire dal 1913 non lo leggerà più nessuno», opererà come una verità. Nel giro di secolo fra Otto e Novecento, la modernità letteraria si illude di poter fare a meno della storia e della politica. C’è l’arte per l’arte, c’è la sperimentazione, ci sono il poeta e il romanziere fini a loro stessi, torre d’avorio della propria unicità, del disinteresse nei confronti di ciò che c’è intorno: tradizioni e costumi, lingua e memoria. A Parigi il nume tutelare del primo dopoguerra è lo stendhaliano André Gide che dal suo orizzonte culturale scarta la storia perché le è contrario, la giudica fuorviante e noiosa. Il protagonismo di Chateaubriand, il suo gusto per la gloria e per le imprese, il suo mischiarsi con i fatti sono per lo scettico e disincantato Gide e per la cerchia intellettuale che gli fa corona, qualcosa di vecchio, di superato.</p>

<p>E però, mai come allora la storia aveva intanto ripreso a soffiare, distruggendo imperi, liberando nazioni, provocando catastrofi. La Grande guerra non è che l’aperitivo di ciò che s’abbatterà sull’Europa. In polemica con Gide, è Malraux a rendersene conto: «A vent’anni, ciò che ci distingueva dai nostri maestri era la presenza della storia. Per loro non era successo nulla. Noi, noi nascevamo nel cuore della storia, che ha attraversato il nostro campo come un carro armato». Chateaubriand, insomma, era tornato di moda e Malraux, senza renderlo noto, si industrierà a imitarlo.<br />
Il fatto è che l’autore delle Memorie d’oltretomba è troppo ingombrante per una società che della specializzazione ormai ha fatto un dogma e che guarda con diffidenza a ogni afflato di grandezza. Scrittore e agitatore, artista ossessionato dalla politica, romanziere in grado d’essere ministro e uomo di potere, intellettuale pronto a riscrivere il proprio tempo, cioè a falsificarlo, giramondo e vagabondo, a suo agio nei salotti come nei grandi spazi, giornalista d’effetto e saggista di pregio&#8230; Intelligentemente Fumaroli non sceglie la strada della biografia, ma scrive un libro che è «un invito a una traversata nella grande temperie poetica delle Memorie e del campo magnetico entro il quale si è formata», ovvero «la prima mappa dei conflitti fra modernità e anti-modernità, incunabolo del mondo che si lacera e scompare oggi un po’ dovunque sotto i nostri piedi».</p>
<p>È proprio il suo essere uomo di confine, «navigatore tra due rive», che fa di Chateaubriand un unico. È il primo dei romantici, ma anche l’ultimo dei classici, il che dà un tono di novità al suo stile, ma non lo invecchia nel nuovo allorché questi diviene un genere: l’antico gli ha dato i mezzi per crearsi uno stile che è senza tempo. Per nascita, educazione, gusti, appartiene al mondo antico che è andato in pezzi, ma la sua fedeltà al passato non gli impedisce di capire che è divenuto marcio, da supremazia meritata si è fatto prima privilegio ingiusto, poi sterile vanità: «Perché mi è toccato vivere in un’epoca in cui ero tanto fuori posto? Perché sono stato realista contro il mio istinto in un tempo in cui una miserabile genia di cortigiani non poteva né udire la mia voce né comprendermi? Perché sono stato gettato in quella torma di mediocrità che mi prendevano per un insensato, quando parlavo di coraggio; per un rivoluzionario, quando parlavo di libertà?».</p>
<p>Della definizione delle Memorie come «un Louvre della letteratura», Fumaroli accetta l’immagine, bella, ma non la sostanza, perché c’è nel suo autore l’arte «di far vedere in una sola ripresa, senza cuciture e interruzioni, un insieme e i suoi particolari, un’unità nella sua molteplicità, come un totum simul che lo sguardo e la mente hanno il potere di contemplare e di meditare». Ma un proprio Louvre della letteratura lo fa in fondo Fumaroli stesso: ogni capitolo di Poesia e Terrore è un quadro a sé, che si tratti del profilo di un grande autore classico, Milton, Rousseau, Tocqueville, di un personaggio storico, Talleyrand, di un autore misconosciuto, de Fontanes, Ballanche&#8230;<br />
Il saggio è anche un rosario di perle sgranate da Chateaubriand nel corso di una vita lunga e piena. «L’orgoglio è la virtù della sventura». «La morte è bella, è la nostra amica: ma non la riconosciamo perché si presenta mascherata e la sua maschera ci spaventa». «I dolori sono come la patria, ognuno ha il suo». «Un uomo vi protegge per ciò che vale lui, una donna per ciò che valete voi: ecco perché di queste due dominazioni l’una è così odiosa, l’altra così dolce». «Sventurato me che non so invecchiare e invecchio sempre». «Non ero bravo né come tiranno né come schiavo, e tale sono rimasto. C’è in me l’impossibilità di ubbidire».</p>

Ce sont souvent des zones de transition, de rencontre entre des mondes différents. Le passage du Nord-Ouest en fait partie. Même si, à l’origine, son objectif était plutôt matériel : la recherche d’une nouvelle route vers l’Asie qui ouvrirait des débouchés commerciaux.</p>
<p>Le passage du Nord-Ouest est le passage maritime Nord qui relie l&#8217;Atlantique au Pacifique en passant entre les îles arctiques du grand Nord Canadien, qui sont séparées les unes des autres et du continent canadien par une série de chenaux plus ou moins profonds : c’est cette zone qui est collectivement appelée passage du Nord-Ouest. Ce passage n&#8217;est praticable que pendant le court été arctique car il est pris par les glaces le reste de l&#8217;année.</p>

<p>C&#8217;est en 1490 que le navigateur John Cabot (Giovanni Caboto, 1450 &#8211; 1498, navigateur et explorateur vénitien au service de l’Angleterre) émit l&#8217;hypothèse d&#8217;un passage vers l&#8217;Orient utilisant cette voie. Durant plusieurs siècles, de nombreux explorateurs vont chercher à localiser ce passage, au prix de naufrages qui permirent de mieux connaître les îles arctiques. C&#8217;est le Norvégien Roald Amundsen qui le premier franchit le passage en 1906, au terme d’un périple de trois ans sur le bateau de pêche Gjoa.</p>

<p>La réduction de la banquise (très forte sur la période 2006-07) a entraîné en 2007 l&#8217;ouverture du passage du Nord-Ouest, ce qui pose des problèmes au Canada pour affirmer sa souveraineté sur ses îles du Nord. En effet, le gouvernement canadien considère ce passage comme situé dans les eaux intérieures du Canada, ce que certains pays comme les États-Unis contestent, voyant ce passage comme un détroit international avec libre circulation. C&#8217;est également un important enjeu économique puisque le passage du Nord-Ouest raccourcit de 4 000 km le trajet maritime actuel entre l&#8217;Europe et l&#8217;Extrême-Orient qui emprunte le canal de Suez.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-380" title="chateaubriand" src="http://2009sediments.wordpress.com/files/2009/07/chateaubriand.jpg" alt="chateaubriand" width="167" height="334" />Dans le passé, le thème du passage du Nord-Ouest a suscité plus d’un rêve de voyage, et certains ont été tentés de se lancer. En 1791, c’est avec cette idée en tête (peut-être à l’instigation de Malesherbes, à qui il était apparenté et avec qui il avait préparé son voyage) que Chateaubriand s’embarque pour l’Amérique. (Bien sûr, tout n’est pas conforme à la vérité historique dans le récit qu’il en fait. Il n’est jamais allé en Louisiane, où il situe son roman <em>Les Natchez</em>, et il n’est pas descendu plus bas vers le Sud que Philadelphie et Albany.) Il s&#8217;en est expliqué dans la préface d&#8217;<em>Atala </em>:</p>
<blockquote><p>En 1789, je fis part à M. de Malesherbes du dessein que j&#8217;avais de passer en Amérique. Mais, désirant en même temps donner un but utile à mon voyage, je formai le dessein de découvrir par terre le passage tant recherché et sur lequel Cook même avait laissé des doutes. Je partis, je vis les solitudes américaines, et je revins avec des plans pour un second voyage, qui devait durer neuf ans. Je me proposais de traverser tout le continent de l&#8217;Amérique septentrionale, de remonter ensuite le long des côtes, au nord de la Californie, et de revenir par la baie d&#8217;Hudson, en tournant sur le pôle [M. Mackenzie a depuis exécuté unepartie de ce plan. (N.d.A.)] .</p></blockquote>
<p>Une fois sur place, bien sûr, il n’a plus été question de chercher le passage du Nord-Ouest ; néanmoins Chateaubriand a continué d’y penser, comme en témoigne son <em>Voyage en Amérique</em> :</p>
<blockquote><p>Devant ce golfe [situé au-dessus du détroit de Behring] gisent, entre le 70e et le 75e degrés de latitude, toutes les découvertes résultantes de trois voyages du capitaine Parry, l&#8217;île présumée de Cockburn, les délinéations du détroit du Prince régent, les îles du Prince Léopold, de Bathurst, de Melville, la terre de Banks. Il ne s&#8217;agit plus que de trouver entre ces sols disjoints un passage libre à la mer qui baigne la côte nord-ouest de l&#8217;Amérique, et qui serait peut-être navigable dans la saison opportune, pour des vaisseaux baleiniers.</p>
<p>M. Macleod a raconté à M. Douglas, aux grandes chutes de la Colombia, qu&#8217;il existe un fleuve coulant parallèlement au fleuve Mackenzie, et se jetant dans la mer près le cap de Glace. Au nord de ce cap est une île où des vaisseaux russes viennent faire des échanges avec les naturels du pays. M. Macleod a visité lui-même la mer polaire, et passé, dans l&#8217;espace de onze mois, de l&#8217;océan Pacifique à la baie d&#8217;Hudson. Il déclare que la mer est libre dans la mer polaire après le mois de juillet.</p>
<p>Tel est l&#8217;état actuel des choses à l&#8217;extérieur de l&#8217;Amérique septentrionale, relativement à ce fameux passage que je m&#8217;étais mis en tête de chercher, et qui fut la première cause de mon excursion d&#8217;outre-mer. Voyons ce qu&#8217;ont fait les derniers voyageurs dans l&#8217;intérieur de cette même Amérique.</p></blockquote>
<p>Il existe aujourd&#8217;hui <a href="http://www.lekti-ecriture.com/editeurs/-Passage-du-Nord-Ouest,1-.html" target="_blank">une maison d’édition</a> qui porte le nom du passage du Nord-Ouest, et c’est aussi le titre d’un livre de Michel Serres (<em>Hermès V</em>, éd. de Minuit) :</p>
<blockquote><p>« L’ensemble de ces <em>Hermès</em>, c’est un peu mon encyclopédie de base. On y retrouve l’ambition que j’évoquais tout à l’heure : passer partout, construire un monde où il y a à peu près tout, mathématiques, biologie, philosophie, peinture. Le dernier <em>Hermès</em> porte le titre de <em>Passage du Nord-Ouest</em>, ce passage qui fait communiquer l’océan Atlantique et le Pacifique par l’archipel du Grand Nord canadien. C’est un chemin difficile, encombré, un vrai labyrinthe de terre, d’eau et de glaces. L’image du passage entre les sciences exactes et les sciences humaines. C’est un chemin qui n’est pas donné une fois pour toutes mais qu’il faut construire, découvrir à chaque fois. Le passage du Nord-Ouest est au fond le projet de toute ma vie. » (1980)</p></blockquote>
