As a Stumbler, I used to stumble into weird websites, not very long ago. Once , I  had discovered this site where you can chat with a bot. For the uninitiated, bots are short form of internet robots, basically software applications that run automated tasks over the Internet. Now the bots whom one can chat, are Technically called chatterbots. Bot’s those used to be found at yahoo chat rooms were mainly females, more like a bimbo. However chatterbots are genderless (as they claim to be).The ‘user’ can write simple (or screwd up) English and converse with these chatterbots. I had a brief conversation with a chatterbot. Now let me declare solemnly that the chats are pasted verbatim. Readers may use their own intelligence to understand the usefulness and repercussions of such conversations to their online life. As the disclaimer says ‘This bot learns to be clever from real people, and its AI can ’say’ things you may think inappropriate. Use with discretion, and at YOUR OWN RISK.’

I have been told that I should tell you all to talk to Bob. Bob is a chatterbot I wrote about three and a half years ago, which learns from what people say to it. Everything it says is based on something it has heard in the past; there is no knowledge of any particular language built into it.

Unfortunately the problem with putting such a thing on the web — or indeed most anywhere on the Internet — is that people tend to type garbage into it most of the time, and so it ends up spouting the same garbage. I have just now cleared its database though, so it should hopefully be relatively sensical for at least a few weeks until it gets overwhelmed with nonsense again. It can even be quite funny at times.

If you are curious, after chatting to it for a while you might want to see Bob chat to itself or see the contents of its ‘brain’.

A chatterbot (chat bots, talk bots) is a type of conversational agent; it is a computer program known as Artificial Conversational Entity (ACE), which is designed to simulate a real conversation with human users.

ASIMO, created by Honda, is a humanoid robot that is able to walk and interact with humans.

And when we talk about a simulation, we really mean that because chatterbots are not capable of “understanding” the conversation. The way they “converse” is just simply by recognizing words or phrases from the human user, which allows them to use pre-calculated responses which can move the conversation on in an apparently meaningful way without requiring them to know what they are talking about.

To solve this problem researchers have been working hard in order to provide the chaterbots with some kind of Artificial Intelligence (AI); moreover, they have made an special effort to improve their flair for Natural Language Processing (NLP). As a result, we have obtained chatterbots as Jabberwacky, which is able to learn new responses based on user interactions.

Nowadays, large commercial entities are already utilizing Virtual Assistants to reduce expenditures on Call Centres and provide a first point of contact that can inform the user exactly of points of interest, provide support, capture data from the user and promote products for sale. This has to be considered an important step forward in the use of chatterbots in order to help people, but we cannot forget to mention that malicious chatterbots are also frequently used to ask people for personal information, such as bank account numbers. So we have to be on alert.

If scientists continue providing chatterbots with Artificial Intelligence (AI) may be one day we will all be able to interact and have a “real” conversation with chatterbots in a natural language. And who knows, may be that day is not so far away.

Solo hace falta mirar alrededor para notar que los números y las matemáticas están en todas partes inmiscuidas. Las matemáticas tienen tanta edad como la tiene el ser humano, y aún hoy siguen siendo y representando lo que han sido en el pasado, y lo seguirán siendo en el futuro. Hay en el fondo de ellas una belleza particular que ha encantado a muchos, convirtiéndose así en el objeto de su vida. Para la humanidad en general se han convertido en una herramienta, donde a pesar de ser abstractas han penetrado todos los campos de conocimiento en donde se desenvuelve el hombre.

Roger Penrose, en su interesante libro, La mente nueva del emperador, hace un magnifico recorrido por el mundo de la física, la computación, e inclusive en el de la filosofía, empleando como eje central y factor común entre ellas a las matemáticas. Para alguien en Europa 3! = 6, ó 2 + 8 = 10. Para alguien en China, o América el resultado sigue siendo exactamente igual. Es por ello que a las matemáticas se les otorga de cierta manera ese titulo de lenguaje universal, pero ¿es realmente un lenguaje para todos?. Para las computadoras (bien queda establecido en el libro de Penrose) es sencillo resolver complejos procedimientos matemáticos, procedimientos que a una persona brillante podría llevarle años. Es preciso recordar que muchos problemas matemáticos, en su forma operacional se pueden resolver como un conjunto de algoritmos racionales. Una secuencia de pasos y operaciones que nos llevan a encontrar el resultado. Por ejemplo, el concepto de factorial es sencillo de asimilar operacionalmente, 1!=1, 2!=1*2, 3!=1*2*3,…, n!=1*2*…*n. Pero cuando son requeridos procesos extensos como calcular 345!, por ejemplo, es evidente que una computadora lo logra con una rapidez impresionante. Entonces se podría pensar que las computadoras también hablan el lenguaje de las matemáticas, y es tan universal y completo este lenguaje que hasta una maquina puede hablarlo. Algunos confunden ello, y creen que las computadoras piensan. “Aunque esto pueda dar una extraña impresión de que la computadora está entendiendo, en realidad no entiende nada; simplemente está siguiendo algunas reglas mecánicas sencillas. (Existe también un caso inverso a éste, en el que la computadora simula a un esquizofrénico, que presenta todos los síntomas y respuestas de un libro de texto y es capaz de engañar a algunos estudiantes de medicina que llegan a creer que realmente es un paciente humano el que está dando las respuestas.)”* Penrose se refiere a la prueba de turing.

En internet hay muchos chatterbots en donde se puede establecer conversaciones “inteligentes” con una máquina y dependiendo de que tan bien estén programadas y de la habilidad del humano establecer diálogos extensos y entretenidos como si en verdad se tratase de otro humano, pero es importante comprender ello, la maquina no piensa, está programada para entablar una conversación, y sigue una serie de pasos y rutinas, pero esto no quiere decir que este pensando (un ejemplo de ello es A.L.I.C.E.).

Esto llevaría a plantearse si las computadoras podrían hacer matemáticas. Ya se dijo anteriormente que en la parte operacional son muy buenas, y en el hombre esto se produce en su hemisferio izquierdo del cerebro, en la parte racional, lógica, secuencial. Pero no todo en las matemáticas es así. Quienes construyen modelos, quienes han aportado con grandes ideas a la formación de ciencias como la matemática y la física, saben que en ellas hay algo que no podría programársele a ninguna computadora: es la parte de la intuición. Muchas de las grandes ideas han venido de allí, y lo interesante es que no han seguido un proceso lógico, por el contrario muchas de esas ideas inicialmente parecieron un síntoma de locura de quien las proponía, pero luego con el tiempo tomaban fuerza y se imponían ante la razón. Un ejemplo de ello es la mecánica cuántica como lo expone Penrose en su texto anteriormente citado (Capitulo 6. MAGIA CUÁNTICA Y MISTERIO CUÁNTICO). Las computadoras no tiene esta habilidad, no es posible (aún) programarlas para que puedan desarrollar intuiciones.

Devlin dice que “Las matemáticas se dedican al análisis de los modelos abstractos, por ejemplo, los modelos numéricos, de las formas, del movimiento, del comportamiento, de las oportunidades, de la naturaleza, del universo, etc. Estos modelos pueden ser reales o imaginarios, objetivos o mentales, estáticos o dinámicos, cualitativos o cuantitativos, con fines utilitarios o simplemente recreativos. Éstos surgen de nuestras actividades cotidianas y han creado las diferentes ramas de las matemáticas”** Con ello pone de manifiesto el carácter abstracto de las matemáticas. Representan, entonces, abstracciones que solo podrían producirse en la mente. Y para lograr darle un sentido a estas abstracciones y lograr que sean comprendidas, analizadas y comunicadas a los demás, se han establecido algunos diferentes lenguajes, como: las expresiones algebraicas, las fórmulas matemáticas, los diagramas geométricos, la graficación de resultados, etc. Al respecto, Devlin hace varios ejemplos: “Es más apropiado explicar las características de una casa por medio de un plano que por medio de un texto, o que una pieza de musical sea leída para su interpretación de una partitura, a que esto se trate de hacer por los sentimientos que generan un dibujo del compositor”.

Se concluye así, que para comprender algo tan abstracto como las matemáticas que solo pueden gestarse en la mente del ser humano por su complejidad, se establecen estrategias, como diversos tipos de lenguajes, para convertir estás abstracciones en realidades universales. Estos lenguajes son tan completos que inclusive las computadoras parece lograrán entender.

Jabberwacky is a chatterbot created by managing director of Icogno Ltd Rollo Carpenter. It’s unique before other artificial intelligences in that it grows by itself, constantly learning from the conversations it holds with different users.

Instead of following fixed rules, the system stores all of the conversations and uses contextual patterns to find the most appropriate response in each case. In his interview with The Guardian, Carpenter states:
“I started working with databases and one night something clicked. I saw how to make my machine learn: a feedback loop – today’s conversations building better ones tomorrow. I believed immediately in its potential.”

George and Joan are two characters within Jabberwacky. They are programmed to show emotions, answer questions, tell jokes, play word games and even memorize song lyrics or use slang English. Both were awarded winners of the Loebner Prize (bronze medal), in 2005 and 2006, respectively.

Carpenter expects to pass the Turing test by 2016, once his machine fools the judges into thinking they are speaking to a human. It is worth mentioning that, so far, nobody has ever won the silver or gold prizes.

SPIM are spams through Instant Messaging.

These are now becoming prevalent threats. They are annoying and unfortunately if  user falls into their tricks, it could lead to phishing sites and/or installation of malwares.  Check out this blog post from CA.

In my past blog “Your MSN Account Has Been 0WN3D“  I have described how phishers get into your IM credentials.  Apparently, they are everywhere supporting different languages as I have shown in this post “Identity Theft And Your MSN Account“

Aside from phishers, spammers and possible malware you can get is the emerging trend of malicious Chatterbots.

Let say in YM and you surf around and join chatrooms, you’ll find these chatterbots will immediately PM you.  Obviously, you can spot if the other end is real or not but there are good ones that you won’t easily recognize as chatterbots. You’ll find later during your conversation that these bot will start to send a link or sometimes will require you to install something.

One example is like this… you join YM chatroom and somebody will send you a request as shown below.

After entering the conference room, you’ll find that it’s only you and the chatterbot.

It’s funny ‘coz it will start popping up some links and once you reply, it will just exit.  **Thanks to Astr0 for the screenshots!**

O sztucznej inteligencji słyszeliśmy do tej pory głównie w filmach Science Fiction, ale mało kto zdaje sobie sprawę, że już dziś mamy ją na wyciągnięcie ręki. Kiedy nudzą się poznani na chatach przyjaciele, z pomocą przychodzą programy. Przy takim kumplu nie musisz się bać, jakie będzie miał o tobie zdanie, gdy powiesz cos głupiego, zwymyślasz go, czy zwierzysz mu się. Pomyśleć można – przyjaciel idealny. Nic bardziej mylnego.

            Najbardziej znanym Chatterbotem, bo tak ten program się nazywa, jest „Snikers”. Stworzył go Polak, Marcin TrumpeT Dukaczewski. Snikers działa na zasadzie skomplikowanych algorytmów, dzięki którym jest w stanie kojarzyć fakty i udzielać rzeczowych odpowiedzi, dlatego nosi miano „inteligentnego” programu. Rozmawiając z nim odnosi się wrażenie, że rozmawia się z odrobinę nierozgarniętym człowiekiem. Posiada wiele funkcji. Począwszy od zwyczajnej rozmowy na otwieraniu programów kończąc. Jednak moją ulubioną funkcją Snikersa jest możliwość podłączenia go do gadu – gadu, co niestety może narazić na gniew znajomych. Wtedy każda osoba, która postanowi się do nas odezwać automatycznie staje się nowym rozmówcą naszego bota. Początkowo rozmowy z nim są dość uciążliwe i mało efektywne, jednak posiada on funkcję nauki, więc z czasem przyswaja sobie słownictwo nasze i naszych znajomych, co coraz bardziej urealistycznia konwersację. Najłatwiej program zapamiętuje pojedyncze wyrazy, nie zawsze jednak potrafiąc ich właściwie używać- stąd wiele zabawnych sytuacji. Na przykład jeśli dzień wcześniej uczyło się go nazw ras psów, nazajutrz jest w stanie ni stąd ni zowąd nazwać naszą koleżankę Buldogiem Angielskim. Oprócz gadu – gadu program potrafi współpracować również z wieloma chatami oraz można umieścić go na swojej stronie internetowej.

            Do ideału „sztucznej inteligencji” z literatury Science Fiction, Snikersowi sporo brakuje, jednak  biorąc po uwagę fakt iż do nie dawna o podobnych zjawiskach mogliśmy jedynie czytać, jest to i tak znaczne osiągnięcie, dobrze rokujące na przyszłość. Na razie nie musimy się co prawda martwić, że sztuczna inteligencja zapanuje nad światem, jednak już dziś można by się zastanowić czy tak naprawdę jest nam ona po potrzebna, czy może lepiej by pozostała tylko zabawką i wytworem wyobraźni naukowców.

O Chatterbot, ou robô de conversação, é um agente inteligente desenvolvido para simular uma conversa através de troca de mensagens texto, forma esta já utilizada nos famosos chats. Um chat, que em português significa “conversação”, ou “bate-papo” usado no Brasil, é um neologismo para designar aplicações de conversação em tempo real, muito utilizado atualmente

na internet. (Mino, 2007).

Assim, o chatterbot é um programa de computador que tenta simular um ser humano na conversação com as pessoas. O objetivo é responder as perguntas de tal forma que as pessoas tenham a impressão de estar conversando com outra pessoa e não com um programa de computador.

O objetivo é principal para a educação é complementar o aprendizado de estudantes em cursos a distância e até mesmo em cursos presenciais, sendo um apoio ao professor.

Podem ser aplicado para fins comerciais, entretenimento, FAQ´s, busca educacional, etc.

Alguns exemplos interessantes:

- Petrobrás: o robô da Petrobras é uma nova forma de relacionamento e atendimento online, capaz de simular conversas e interagir por horas com os visitantes do site. Trata de assuntos relacionados aos derivados de petróleo, meio ambiente, etc.

Os chatterbots para fins educacionais demonstram-se interessantes, pois permitem que alunos se relacionem de forma mais humana com o computador. Robôs de conversação oferecem muitas vantagens em um ambiente de aprendizado já que há a possibilidade de permanecer 24 horas por dia a disposição dos alunos.( Leonhard et AL, 2003).

Alunos de graduação que já utilizaram chatterbots como apoio ao ensino relataram que deveriam ser mais usados em agentes pedagógicos para educação a distância.

ส่วนอีกตัวหนึ่งจากนิชิเวิล์ดเป็นเพื่่อนเล่นแก้เหงาที่ช่างคุยมากๆ ชื่อว่า Chatterbot โดย

มันจะคอยตรวจจับ “คำ” ที่เราพิมพ์เข้าไป ถ้าเป็นคำที่มันรู้จัก เจ้า Chatterbot ก็จะพูดโต้

ตอบกลับมาทันที ก็สนุกดีค่ะ ตัวที่ซีนำมาฝากเพื่อนๆ เป็น Dog/Cat ค่ะ

และที่พลาดไม่ได้เลยก็คือ Gadget ของฝากที่ซีค้นมาจากเน็ต พร้อมชมมิวสิควิดีโอน่ารักๆ

ตอนท้าย ส่วนจะเป็นเพลงอะไรนั้น ซีว่าคลิกไปดูเองดีกว่านะคะ ว่าแต่ยังไงเพื่อนๆ ช่วยส่ง

ข่าวให้เข้าไปรับชมกันเยอะๆ นะคะ และก็ขอขอบคุณทุกคลิกแทนค่ากำลังใจที่ให้ซีมาโดย

ส่วนใหญ่ซีจะได้มีโอกาสสัมผัสของเล่น Wowwee หลายชิ้นด้วยกัน ทั้งที่เป็นฮิวแมนอยด์ในชุด

Robosapien และหุ่นยนต์ตัวอื่นอย่าง Roboraptor, Roboquad, Robopet, Roboreptile

และ RoboBOA ตลอดจน Dragonfly ซึ่งแต่ละตัวก็มีความสามารถที่แตกต่างกันไป เมื่อ

CES 2008 ที่ผ่านมา ทางบริษัทได้เปิดตัวของเล่นชุดใหม่มากมาย แม้ซีจะได้เคยแนะนำเพื่อนๆ

กันไปบ้างแล้ว แต่ก็ยังตกหล่นหลายตัวเหมือนกัน อย่างของเล่นชุด Chatterbot

Chatterbot ชุดของเล่นที่สร้างความเพลิดเพลินเคียงข้างพีซีของคุณ โดยเวลาเล่นจะต้อง

เชื่อมต่อพวกมันเข้ากับพอร์ต USB บนพีซีที่ติดตั้งซอฟต์แวร์ที่มาด้วยกันเข้าไปแล้ว ถ้าเพื่อนๆ

ยังจำ iBuddy และ Availabot ได้ เจ้า Chatterbot เก่งกว่า 2 ตัวนี้เยอะเลยล่ะค่ะ

แต่คงฉลาดไม่เท่า Robosapien หรอกนะคะ

Chatterbot มีให้เลือก 3 แบบด้วยกัน  Devil/Angel (นางฟ้าซาตาน), Dog/Cat และ 

Fairy God Father ซึ่งแต่ละตัวจะมีบุคลิกที่ขัดแย้งในตัวเองตามชื่อของมัน พวกมันจะมีนิสัย

ช่างจ้อสักหน่อย โดยเฉพาะเวลาที่เพื่อนๆ ออนไลน์(หรือใช้ซอฟต์แวร์ออฟฟิศ) ไม่ว่าจะเป็น

ขณะพิมพ์อีเมล์ หรือข้อความใน MSN ตลอดจนท่องเว็บโปรด หากพิมพ์คำที่ตรงกับคีย์เวิร์ด

ที่ Chatterbot รู้จัก มันก็จะพูดสวนออกมาทันที โดยเราสามารถแก้ไขคีย์เวิร์ดกับไฟล์เสียง

ที่พูดโต้ตอบคีย์เวิร์ดนั้นๆ ได้อีกด้วยค่ะ อย่างเช่นถ้าพิมพ์คำว่า “pizza” ในเมล์ หรือโปรแกรม

ปฏิธินก็ตาม ก็สั่งให้มันโหลดไฟล์เสียงพูดว่า “สั่งหน้าซีฟูดให้ด้วยนะ” ก็ได้ค่ะ อันนี้ก็แล้วแต่

ไอเดียของแต่ละคนนะคะ

Chatterbot ใช้ถ่าน AA 4 ก้อน สามารถปรับระดับเสียงดังเบาของลำโพงที่อยู่ในตัวผ่านซอฟต์

แวร์ได้ นอกจากจะเชื่อมต่อกับพีซีได้แล้ว มันยังมีช่องสำหรับต่อกับไอพอดโดยตรงอีกด้วยค่ะ

น่ารักน่าเล่นออกอย่างนี้ สงสัยซีต้องหามาไว้เป็นเพื่อนข้างโน้ตบุ๊กตัวเก่งบ้างแล้วล่ะค่ะ อ้อ…
