Kids are a blessing aren’t they?  My son (let’s call him ‘B’ – it’s easier) is nearing two and getting more and more chatty by the day.  He loves talking and sometimes just cannot get the words out quickly enough.

As most parents will know though – once they get to this stage they’re like little sponges.  They’ll take anything they hear and repeat it – often over and over again;  sometimes at the most inopportune times.  Some parents will have felt the sting of this when they accidentally swear in front of their child and spend the next few hours trying to convince them not to repeat the expletive they’ve now latched on to.

‘B’s own skills as a mimic had a more surprising (yet nearly equally embarassing) side effect recently.

‘B’ and I reguarly go to the park to play on the swings, slides or just run around the field depending on his whim.  There are often lots of other kids there and he loves people-watching – often contentedly sitting in the swing for an age just watching all the other kids climbing the equipment, chasing one another etc.

At this age he rarely plays with another child, the closest he’ll get is jumping near them or just staring at them and smiling.

The other day, as he climbed up one climbing frame/fort as he neared the top another boy had climbed up from another ladder.  This other boy’s Dad called: “Be careful Luca.”  That was it.  ‘B’ latched on.  He looked up, looked at the boy and said: “Luca.”  I smiled and said “That’s right.  His name is Luca.”  ‘B’ grinned: “Luca.” he said again, then: “Allo Luca… Luca.   Luca.”

At this point Luca himself had gone from the smile of recognition of his own name to being slightly disturbed by the repetition.  I tried to distract Bryn, with the slide, puddles whatever was closest to hand.  As any parent trying to erase the swearword from their child’s memory will know this was useless.

“Luca.  Luca.” ‘B’ chimed on.

At this point Luca’s Dad headed over, looking a little surprised but smiling and examining ‘B’ closely as he carried on repeating his son’s name – even as he trotted around doing other things, it had become mantra-like now.

“Do they know each other?” Luca-Dad asked.   “No, no I don’t think so.” I replied “He’s just copying what you said.” I explained.  Luca-Dad persevered: “Where does he go to nursery perhaps they do know each other?”

I didn’t want to be rude, but I knew they didn’t.  Luca was clearly several months older than ‘B’ and whilst I’m terrible with names, I’m good with faces (I often see famous people and think I ‘know’ them as I cannot remember their name but know their face) – I knew we didn’t know Luca.

I continued to try to explain away ‘B’s parrot-like tendancies all the while underminded by a background echo of “Luca… Luca… Luuuuuuu-ca.  Luca-Luca.  Lu-Lu-KA.  Luca. Lu-ca-ca.” from ‘B’.

I still think Luca-Dad thought I was in denial.  Still – there are worse things kids can latch on to and repeat.  I just wish they wouldn’t do it so publicly!

Opera mini sebuah aplikasi web brower ternyata bisa digunakan untuk chatting dengan memakai ID Yahoo atau yg lebih dikenal dengan YM ( yahoo messenger ).

Sering kali kalau lagi chatting dari hp kita selalu memakai aplikasi yg berbeda-beda,nah agar ga selalu buka tutup aplikasi kita pergunakan opera mini,caranya sebagai berikut :

1. Buka opera mini.
2. Masukkan alamat ini wap.yahoo.com
3. Kemudian scroll kebawah dan pilih ”Messenger”.
4. Selanjutnya Sign in dengan ID dan password Yahoo kamu.
5. Masuk kehalaman berikutnya klik ‘’sign in” lagi.

Sekarang kamu bisa mulai chatting dengan YM.Selamat sampe disini kamu sudah bisa chatting lewat opera mini.

Kalau chatting membuat kamu bosan atau BT,kamu bisa langsung browsing tanpa perlu menutup dan membuka aplikasi lagi.

Ada informasi menarik nih, mungkin rekan-rekan sudah pernah mendengarnya, bahkan menerapkannya. Ini tentang Opera Mini dan eBuddy, software handphone yng biasa digunakan untuk browsing dan chatting. Informasi tersebut menyebutkan bahwa dengan menginstal versi modifikasi kedua software tersebut,  maka kita bisa browsing internet dan chatting gratis sesuka kita. Saya telah mencoba, dan ternyata benar!

Yang saya ketahui sebelumnya, trik ini hanya dapat dilakukan bagi pengguna operator selular Indosat,khususnya IM3. Namun setelah browsing dengan penasaran, saya juga menemukan bahwa pengguna operator lain juga bisa memakai trik ini.

Sebenarnya trik apa yang digunakan, sehingga aplikasi itu bisa mengakses interney dengan gratis? Nah untuk itu saya kurang paham, namun bisa saya simpulkan bahwa dengan mengubah query server, maka sebuah aplikasi bisa mengakses internet dengan gratis. Namun tidak hanya itu, operator juga menentukan kesuksesan sebuah aplikasi hasil modifikasi / handler bisa mengakses internet gratis.

Sejauh ini operator yang bisa diakali antara lain: Indosat, 3 (Three), Axis, dan XL. Cukup memasukan query server pada menu yang keluar saat aplikasi hasil modifikasi itu pertama berjalan. Untuk selanjutnya aplikasi itu akan secara otomatis memilih query server gratis yang telah dimasukan.

Lalu, di mana kita bisa mendapatkan aplikasi Opera Mini dan eBuddy gratisan itu? Sebenarnya kedua aplikasi itu bisa didownload di situs ini, namun saya sediakan link tersendiri agar tidak merepotkan.

Sedangkan untuk Opera Mini 4.1 Handler, Opera Mini 5.0 Beta Handler, dan eBuddy 1.41 Handler, rekan-rekan harus memasukan query server terlebih dahulu. Daftar query server untuk operator selular di atas bisa dilihat di sini. Sebagai contoh, query server pada Indosat IM3 adalah memasukan wap3g.indosat.com@ pada bagian FrontQuery.

CATATAN:

Perlu diperhatikan bahwa untuk akses internet gratis dari Opera Mini, hanya sebatas browsing halaman web dan gambar, dan tidak gratis untuk download. Jadi kalau rekan-rekan berniat mendownload games atau ringtones, maka pulsa rekan-rekan akan tetap terpotong.  Saran saya, gunakan gambar dengan kualitas terbaik.

Saya tidak bisa menjamin sampai kapan akses internet gratis ini bisa dimanfaatkan. Kita harapkan saja internet gratisan ini bisa bertahan lama, bahkan mungkin untuk selamanya. Kita doakan saja!

Kemaren sakit pinggang gue kambuh. So gue gak bisa kemana-mana jadi gue ngerem aja dirumah. daripada pinggang gue tambah ngilu en ga bisa ngapa-ngapain mending di istirahatin dulu.

Karena pengen approach gue jadi gak sabar dan sedikit putar otak. Gimana caranya approachtanpa keluar rumah? ternyata jawabannya gampang … CHATTING!

So guepun cari file mIRC di torrent langsung gue instal meskipun setelahnya agak bingung karena udah lama gak pake.

Gue cari channel yang rame di DALnet dan akhirnya pas malem ketemu beberapa target yang enak diajak ngobrol:

Target 2: Tipe Thinker, orangnya dingin, pertanyaan gue banyak dan gue berusaha akrab tapi jawabannya satu dua kata. yawdah lagian dia gak punya email daripada bikin bt lebih baik gue disconnet.

Taret 3: Tipe thinker, dingin di awal tapi kemudian asik diajak ngobrol bahkan ngasih alamat email dengan mudah. Ini berarti dia tipe Thinker Positif. Gue add FB-nya langsung di app. Wah asik juga nih cewe.

2. Jangan sekali-kali ngasih alamat email elu dengan mudah. coba pake alamat email dan nick palsu.

4. Berusahalan untuk hangat tapi jangan sok akrab amat. Jangan banyak ketawa, keep cool. Tunjukin klo lo pria gagah bukan anak-anak.

Well itu aja kegiatan gue kemari di hari 2 dari 80 hari misi untuk GAGAL. Kegiatan hari ketiga sebenernya udah gue jalanin dan mungkin gue tulis besok aja.

I recently taught some trainee PGCE teachers at the college I work at on the topic of behaviour management in the classroom. The session was excellent and I received some very positive feedback from the students, which was unusually detailed.

I felt a little unprepared for the session as I had had a very busy few days at work with some deadlines and pressures around a couple of issues that have come up around both a student and some service provision that required a lot of my time. Nevertheless, I have a lot of resources already prepared for my session on managing behaviour so I was able to put in a couple of hours into planning an engaging and challenging session.

The group, 11 trainee teachers, were very receptive and a pleasure to work with making the session both enjoyable but engaging for myself and the PGCE tutor who came along to observe and join in.

On the whole, I do not like calling my session managing behaviour as I feel it kinds of offers a very narrow expectation of what I try to acheive during the time I have with my students, but I guess it helps them to focus on a specific aspect of their work as teachers so I have never thought about any other title.

In my sessions, I aim to provide students with a forum within which they can use their own experience to consider how they can motivate and inspire their own students. I also place the responsibility firmly within themselves for anything that happens in their class that is disruptive to the learning process.

Let me explain this further. Bad day notwithstanding, and extreme issues or situations to one side, the teacher has control over the learning environment and therefore if anything happens to disrupt learning or the lesson, then the teacher has to accept some of the responsibility. But, rather than place it within those terms, I allow them to see what they can do to avoid having issues of disruptive behaviour in their classrooms.

An example is where we discussed the value of Ground Rules, not just as a tool to establish boundaries at the start of the year, but a tool that is ‘live’ and used regularly, such as when doing discussion work you may say ‘Today we are going to discuss ….. (whatever topic) ….. but before we begin, can someone remind us of the rules we have agreed to help our discussion run smoothly?’ There should be a rule for everything you plan to do in class – group work, activities, discussion etc and they should be negotiated and agreed by the class. Some people find the term ‘Ground Rules’ off putting, so what about ‘Expectations’? There are many ways this can be termed but the important aspect of it is that you, as a teacher, can set clear boundaries for behaviour, plus attached to that are clear consequencies for when a student is disruptive. Get the class to agree these too and you may be surprised how severe their consequencies may be – you will probably need to tone them down a bit.

The other crucial tool is getting to know your students – greeting them by name when they arrive, remembering something about them, such as their birthday or some significant event they had recently that you can ask them about or comment on. A simple example is football – some of my students in college support a team and usually on Mondays or Tuesday we discuss the weekends results. Make sure you have something to talk to everyone about – if there is a student in your class whom you do not do this to, they will feel left out and isolated damaging their self esteem.

Being prepared for class and having all the resources you need are obvious areas that need careful attention for a teacher. But, how many teachers get full and frank feedback from their class about how the session or course is going? Doing a learning styles assessment will help, but so will asking them ‘So, how did the session go?’ I ask my students similar questions each week and use the feedback I get to plan and/ or adapt the sessions I run. For one tutorial group I asked the students to do the scheme of work for each half term. It may seem a scary thing to ask your group how they felt your session with them went, but if you set this out as an expectation at the very beginning of your class then it will be a positive experience.

In terms of reacting, if you like, to behaviour tha thappens in class, you will know what behaviours occur regularly and therefore you should be able to have your response ready. Behaviour such as late arrivals, call outs, mobile phones going off, chatting, interupting – these should all be covered by your ground rules and your response is linked to the consequences of those rule breaks. If you find yourself reacting to these, then you are not preparing yourself for class.

I was thinking of perhaps posting on the top ten behaviour management techniques as a series rather than trying to cover everything at once. Count this as just thinking aloud for now.

Jan: I just went to see Julie & Julia mainly because I’m trying to go to more movies. I thought it was about cooking but it was largely about writing (a cookbook) and getting published and writing a blog and becoming an author from writing a blog. It was good anyway and based on 2 true stories.

I just caught a snippet on the Book Show and someone has written a history of Motown and called it ‘Where did our love go’ and that is the Supremes’ song with lyrics taken directly from Sappho the ancient Greek poet. I wonder if he knew the history when he choose the title or if it was just a fluke. Sappho didn’t say ‘Baby, baby’ though.
