Ik blijf het een prachtig gezicht vinden, al ben ik me er terdege van bewust, dat de fier gedragen goederen niet zelden een te zware belasting voor nek en rug betekenen.

In de winkelstraten lopen de dames van de ‘catering’ af en aan. In een soort wasmand dragen ze een keur aan lokale lekkernijen en maaltijden. Op de stoepen van de winkeltjes strijken ze neer om het winkelpersoneel van een lunch of een snack te bedienen. Hoewel de maaltijden veel op elkaar lijken (meestal een soort nasi campur: witte rijst met een plukje groente, een stukje vlees of vis, tempe, wat sambal), verschilt de smaak nog wel eens. Men heeft zo zijn voorkeuren. Bij de één is de pisang goreng voortreffelijk; de ander heeft de lekkerste mie goreng. Nummer drie heeft altijd verse kroepoek. Rond min of meer vaste tijden lopen de dames een min of meer vaste route. Soms kruisen ze elkaars pad; soms zijn ze elkaar nèt voor. Maar zoals in elke dienstverlening in Bali zijn er ook hier een beetje te veel wandelende snackbars, die hun klanten met elkaar moeten delen.

Ook op de hoek van het voetbalveld waar de taxi- en ojekrijders (motor vervoer) rondhangen, vindt de inhoud der manden gretig aftrek. Zodra in de vroege avond ‘ibu kopi’ de hoog gevulde mand op het stoepje zet, komen van alle kanten hongerige chauffeurs aanlopen om gretig in haar maaltijden te graaien. ‘Ibu kopi’, zo genoemd omdat zij een der weinigen is, die verse koffie meebrengt, is bij de meesten favoriet. Haar eten en snacks zijn heel smakelijk en altijd vers. Op de motorbike wordt twee keer per dag een verse voorraad aangevoerd en aan het einde van de dag is ze altijd nagenoeg leegverkocht.

Vaak drinken we thuis geen koffie na het eten, omdat het leuker is een bekertje koffie van ibu te nemen. En als het eten erbij is ingeschoten, eten we lekker mee met onze Balinese vrienden op de stoep. Het smaakt me eerlijk gezegd net zo goed als de nasi goreng bij de beroemde ‘Dewa Warung’ in de Jalan Gootama, die in de Lonely Planet zo wordt aangeprezen.
Als het druk is, blijft ‘ibu kopi’ soms tot drie uur in de nacht rondlopen om de hongerige magen te vullen. Ze is onder de chauffeurs zeer geliefd, deze jonge weduwe, omdat ze vriendelijk is, hard werkt om voor haar gezin te zorgen en natuurlijk vooral vanwege de goede en goedkope maaltijden. Vaak geeft ze nasi weg aan bedelaarsters met een baby. Bedelende kindjes krijgen nog wel eens een zoetigheidje toegestopt. Als haar mand leeg is, of als er geen klanten meer zijn, wacht ibu op het stoepje tot ze wordt opgehaald door haar zoon of een ander familielid. En het gebeurt zelfs wel eens, dat een late taxichauffeur haar thuisbrengt, bij voorbeeld omdat het regent.

Some credit card covers the damage or theft of the rented car. Most credit cards which offer this feature only cover basic models which do not include SUV’s and luxury cars.

There are certain requirements to meet before taking a car for rent. They are:
(1)Know the age requirement of the driver.
(2)Compare the rent of different agencies.
(3)Determine whether it is a free upgrade or discounted rate.
(4)The classes of the car depend on the different brands at different car rental agencies. Rental cars will be typically the base models.
(5)Book the vehicle as soon as possible to avoid the confusion during travel.
(6)Before providing the credit card number, ask about the cancellation policy.
(7)Give rent only for the needs.
(8)Don’t pay double of the car insurance.
(9)If two people are going to drive, make sure that both of their names should be in the agreement.

were essentially CMJ’s headliner, playing some of the biggest showcases of the week and gracing the cover of the CMJ industry newsletter.We saw The Temper Trap Wednesday night at The Music Hall of Williamsburg for the Blue Flowers showcase in the headlining slot once populated by Speech Debelle.

I’m going to be honest in saying that I was not impressed by their set that night, and was quite frankly bored. However, the band I saw onstage at MHOW was not at all the same one smashing the stage at the ACE Hotel.

I think The Temper Trap are more comfortable in a smaller and more intimate setting where they connect with the fans, stepping up their stage presence 150% and feeding off of the energy of the crowd. The crowning moment for me was when lead singer Dougy Mandagi poured bottles of water on the drums to create a geyser effect while Jonathan Aherne swung his bass around like a chainsaw. Now that’s what I call a show!

was first on my radar as the guest vocalist on The Knife’s infectious You Take My Breath Away from the band’s 2005 album Deep Cuts.

Fellow Swedes Olof Dreijer and Karin Dreijer Andersson (aka The Knife) signed Jenny Wilson to Rabid Records where she released two records: Love and Youth (2005) and this year’s Hardships!

Like Chauffeur and Florence + The Machine, Wilson made her debut performance in New York at Fader Fort’s CMJ party. It was a beautiful debut performance and a great introduction to her electro-orchestra sound complete an ensemble of horns, flutes, keys and percussion.

I wasn’t quite sure what Chauffeur was upon seeing it listed on the bill, but I was pleasantly surprised to see these three artists from different places (musically and geographically) come together to make something fresh.

The trio played an extremely short set of about 3 songs, but wowed everyone with their cover of Sheila E.’s Glamorous Life. I’m interested to see what’s next!

how many hip-hopping dudes can you name that are fans of the smiths? well there’s theophilus london… and… err… that’s all i got! i first became aware of theophilus london, after hearing his wonderful reworking of ’sabali’ by african blues duo amadou and miriam. the track, titled ‘grey x sage’ appears on his second mixtape, this charming mixtape, along with 17 other songs which sees him mashup everything from bill withers to whitney houston and includes the guest services of lykke lee on one track. now there’s not many people who can use a whitney houston song, and still look cool, but mr london can (yes, theophilus london is his real name). infact, theophilus has been refining his cool, he is actually rather photo shoot friendly! just see for yourself, i challenge you to find a photo of him where he’s not looking like the most fastidious man on the globe.

im sure we’ll be seeing alot more of theo over the years; in just the last two, he has released two mixtapes, jam! (2008), this charming mixtape (2009), and his first studio album, this charming man, dropped in april this year. not to mention his latest work, a collaborative project with mark ronson, sam sparro, and victor & thomas, called chauffeur (do i have to say he’s freindly with passion pit, and touring with jack peñate, and remixed peñate’s ‘pull my heart away’ too). hence, the fact that theophilus london’s fame is quickly rising, best you jump on the bandwagon now people!

From CMJ’s Music Marathon in New York, to the United Kingdom, I am on tour with Theophilus London once again. At our second stop in Bristol, supporting Jack Penate , we are hitting colleges like Bristol University. I’m literally posting this on my 11th or 12th internet Wi-Fi card. Before my time runs out, I introduce you to the new supergroup, Chauffeur (Theophilus London, Mark Ronson, and Sam Sparro). Listen to their debut track, “Soles of Fire” below.

In het consumentenradioprogramma Peeters & Pichal op Radio1 werd een klacht uitgezonden en behandeld van Hasselaar Peter Goyens die zijn twee dochters op zaterdagnacht naar huis liet komen met een Hasseltse taxi. Deze taxichauffeur nam het niet zo nauw met het verkeersreglement. Hij reed 120km/u door bebouwde kom en dan nog door het rode licht.

Taxiconvenant

Mobiliteitsschepen Rob Beenders reageerde erg alert op een telefoontje van Annemie Peeters. “We hebben een taxiconvenant met de Hasseltse taxibedrijven waarin we duidelijk stellen dat deze taxi’s niet alleen hun standplaats moeten hebben in Hasselt, maar ook moeten voldoen aan de nodige vereisten van onder andere uitrusting en verkeersreglement. De controle van dat verkeersreglement ligt naast de regelmatige politiecontrole ook bij de taxi-uitbaters zelf”, aldus Beenders. Trouwens hij pleit voor een soort zwarte doos, die alle bewegingen van de taxi registreert.

“In Hasselt loopt er inmiddels een procedure om de vergunning van zo’n taxibedrijf in te trekken wegens veelvuldige overtreding van het taxiconvenant”, stelt hij nog.

Taxichauffeurs

Het betrokken taxibedrijf wou echter anoniem blijven en reageerde echter niet zo verbaasd. De hoofdreden die ze aanbrachten, is dat ze niet voldoende chauffeurs vinden om dit onderbetaald nachtberoep uit te oefenen. Ook omdat vele taxichauffeurs werken op percent, kan een motief zijn voor dit onverantwoorde rijstijl.

Niet alleen in Hasselt bestaat dit probleem, ook elders komen er klachten van binnen. Rob Beenders moet in het volgend taxioverleg, dat eerstdaags zal plaatsvinden, zeker de puntjes op de i zetten, wil hij het imago van Hasselt voor de toerist aantrekkelijk blijven maken.

Momenteel worden afspraken gemaakt tussen het stadsbestuur en de lokale politie om de nultolerantie tegen inbreuken van het verkeersreglement door die taxicowboys af te kondigen. Taxi’s wezen gewaarschuwd!

“My b” guys…  CMJ [and midterms :/] turned me out this past week. Got much to catch up on, but this one–I just couldn’t wait.

Chauffeur “the blazing lovechild of Sam Sparro, Theophilus London, Thomas Brenneck, Victor Axelrod & myself” [(c) Mark Ronson] did a couple of shows this week, the last at the Fader Fort (outside of which I stood in the pouring rain for over an hour, hoping that the Chauffeur set would start late enough for me to get in, only to eventually leave after seeing Theophilus London come out the back..but I’m not bitter).

The track was made to support the campaign of Mark Ronson’s Gucci sneaker, and the vinyl of “Soles Of Fire” will be given with each purchase. This looks pretty Limited Edition, but I’m guessing that this won’t be the last we hear from Chauffeur after this track blows up.

Je zou denken dat dit makkelijk is … maar, als dat zo was dan hoefde ik er geen lap tekst aan de wijden, toch?

OK, hoe parkeer je een heftruck?
Behalve dat je een beetje uitkijkt waar je je machine parkeert: niet voor elektriciteitskasten, brandblusmiddelen, doorgangen en nooduitgangen, in gangpaden of op een helling; kijk je ook of de wielen recht staan, de handrem op, het contact af en de contactsleutel eventueel ook eraf, de dodemansknop ingedrukt en de vorken plat op de grond.

Waarom?
Wel, met de wielen recht is makkelijk: je weet nooit wie er na jou op de heftruck springt, en als je wielen niet recht staan dan zal de volgende chauffeur onvermijdelijk een bocht maken. En dat zou desastreuze gevolgen kunnen hebben.
Ik heb zelf vaak genoeg kunnen gadeslaan hoe een toeschouwer nog net op tijd kon wegspringen voor zo een onverwacht manoeuvre. Gelukkig maar, want wie niet kan wegspringen is de pechvogel van de dag.
Dus, parkeren doe je met de wielen recht!

Met de handrem op, om te vermijden dat de truck door trillingen (voorbijrijdende vrachtwagens, ander verkeer, machines, … ), of door falende voetremmen in beweging zou komen.

Het contact af, dan draait de motor niet meer, en bij een heftruck op batterijen gaat ook de automatische rem in werking. Bij een heftruck met verbrandingsmotor voorkom je zo dat de machine door de trillingen van de eigen motor in beweging zou komen. Of je de contactsleutel eraf haalt en meeneemt hangt af van bedrijf tot bedrijf, in sommige bedrijven blijft de sleutel altijd op de machine (de kans dat onbevoegden er een ritje mee gaan maken is klein of onbestaand) en in andere neem je hem altijd mee (als de machine op een werf of zo wordt achtergelaten is de kans groot dat een enthousiasteling ermee aan de haal gaat).

Als je de dodemansknop indrukt, zeker als je de sleutel in het contact laat zitten, voorkom je dat iemand die niet veel kennis van zaken heeft uit “interesse” met de machine aan de slag gaat. Iemand die geen training kreeg in het rijden met de heftruck weet meestal ook niet dat er een dodemansknop is, en dat je die moet deactiveren.

De vorken plat op de grond om te voorkomen dat iemand struikelt over de vorken en met een rotsmak op zijn gezicht valt. Ik ben (lang, lang geleden!) zelf tijdens mijn training over zo een stel vorken gestruikeld, met twee gigantische blauwe plekken en een fikse buil als souvenir. Mij hoef je dus niet te overtuigen van het nut van het parkeren met de vorken plat op de grond!

Maar, er zijn twee manieren om dit te doen:
- met de mast naar voor en de tip van de vorken steunend op de grond
- met de mast vertikaal en de hiel van de vorken steunend op de grond
Zelf ben ik voorstaander van de laatste manier, en ik zal eventjes vertellen waarom.

Methode 1 houdt in dat je de mast naar voor doet, tot de tip van de vorken op de grond steunt, je legt het contact af en je duwt nog een laatste keer met de hendel of de joystick tot de vorken helemaal naar voor staan. Op deze manier komt de spanning van de ketting, en komt deze iet of wat los te hangen.

Ik vind dit geen goed idee, mocht de truck al wat ouder zijn, en de ketting niet meer in zo perfecte staat, dan zou je door te bruusk met de mast of de vorken te gaan bewegen de ketting te hevig onder druk zetten, waardoor deze kan breken. Op dezelfde manier waarop je met je twee handen een touwtje breekt: door het los te laten hangen en er vervolgens een ruk aan te geven.
Ik hoef u allicht niet te vertellen dat een gebroken ketting geen lachertje is?

Daarom ben ik fan van methode 2: je zet de mast netjes vertikaal, laat de vorken zakken tot de hiel op de grond rust, en legt het contact af.
Klaar!
Je zal merken dat de ketting nog steeds onder spanning staat, wat geeft dat een te bruuske chauffeur geen ravage kan aanrichten.

Welke methode is nu de beste?
Wel, als je het aan mij vraagt: de tweede methode, en de heftrucktechnici geven me daarin gelijk, maar je kan genoeg instructeurs vinden die de eerste methode verkiezen.
Nu, op zich maakt het mij niks uit op welke manier jij je heftruck parkeert, zolang je de regels maar volgt en je rekening houdt met de consequenties van beide methodes!

(Straßenbahn…morgens halb 10 in Wien…die Sonne scheint…Ruhe, wie immer in öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln…die Hauptpersonen: eine Dame mit ihrem kleinen Hund, ein höflicher Mann, ein nicht so höflicher Bauarbeiter und der “Chauffeur”…die Dame steigt mit ihrem Hund ein…Der Chauffeur bleibt mit der Straßenbahn fünf Minuten ohne ersichtlichen Grund in der Station stehen…)

Der Höfliche: Jetzt tuan’s dem Hund an Maulkorb aufe…Der fohrt sunst nit weida!

Dame: Ach deshalb. Aber ich fahre nur eine Station.

Der Höfliche: Jo, oba Vurschrift is Vurschrift.

Dame: Also das ist doch…nein…

Der Höfliche: Herns, i hob a an Hund. Jo, des is für den vielleicht nit ongenehm, aber es muass holt sein.

Dame: Wegen einer Station? Lächerlich ist das!

Der Höfliche: Ja, aber es kann immer irgendwas passieren.

Dame: Mein Hund hat noch nie jemandem weh getan. Frechheit!

Der Höfliche: Bitte! Jetzt tuan’s holt endlich!

(die Dame dreht sich um, sucht in ihrer Tasche nach dem Beißkorb und beschwert sich lautstark bei einigen jungen Frauen. Die können ihr Gelächter über das hochrote Gesicht und den unaufhörlichen und doch so sinnlosen Ärger der Dame nicht mehr zurückhalten…Die Dame verpasst ihrem Hund nach fünf Minuten einen Maulkorb…der Chauffeur fährt los. Die Dame beschwert sich weiter und lässt es sich beim Aussteigen nicht nehmen, ganz nach vorne zu gehen und dem Chauffeur ihre Meinung zu sagen)

Dame: Also das muss ich mir nicht gefallen lassen.

Chauffeur (rollt mit den Augen, bleibt aber ruhig): Bitte steigen’s aus jetzt!

Dame (ihre Stimme überschlägt sich): Also so etwas Blödes wie Sie habe ich noch nie gesehen. Und blöd…Ich werde mich beschwerden. Die Straßenbahnnummer merke ich mir. Sie können sich auf was gefasst machen.

(Der Bauarbeiter mischt sich ein)

Bauarbeiter: Herns, jetzt steigen’s endlich aus Sie olte Gurkn: Hob eh ka Zeit!

(entsetzt steigt die Dame aus, gestikuliert aber noch heftig…der Chauffeur schließt die Türen)

Bauarbeiter zum Chauffeur: Fohr holt drüba üba die blede Geifen. Donn is a Ruah!

Chauffeur: Nit üban Hund. Der konn eh nix dafia. Über sie sollt i drübafohrn. Üba die Deppate!

Zesde en laatste deel.

Gde zat een beetje mismoedig op de stoeprand. Hij had die dag nog geen ritje gehad. Zijn vriendinnetje was er vandoor en ik was ook niet al te vriendelijk naar hem toe.

“I know it; I am a bad person.” beschuldigde hij zichzelf om mij de wind uit de zeilen te nemen.
-“You can do a lot to change that”.
-“I have a bad karma.”
-“Bull shit.”
-“You are not Balinese; you don’t understand.”
-“Bull shit.”
-“I really love her.”
-“And you really love the other one the same.”
-“No, but she’s always after me. I already said to her that I want Janine, but she won’t leave me alone.”
-“I think you were not clear enough to her.”
-“I was, but she is so aggressive.”
-Then be more aggressive too.”
-“It is too hard for me to be unkind to anyone.”
-“But now you have hurt Janine, is that not unkind?”
-“You understand nothing about it.”
-“Are you sure?.”
-“No….. My life is so hard; I don’t want to live anymore.”
Gde hing met zijn hoofd in zijn handen, vol zelfmedelijden en ik kon –hoe dan ook- niet meer boos op hem zijn.

“Taxi?” vroeg hij werktuiglijk aan een voorbijganger.
-“Yes please”, was het onverwachte antwoord, “how much to Penestanan?”
Gde verrees energiek uit zijn droefenis en begon zijn onderhandelingen.

Na een paar dagen kreeg ik een sms-je van Janine. Ze had een leuk onderdak gevonden in de streek Sidemen en aardige mensen ontmoet. Ze genoot van de prachtige omgeving en zond haar groeten aan: “you, Ketut and the serial lover.” Ketut kon zijn oren niet geloven. –“Greetings to me?” Hij zond direct een sms-je terug en grapte: “Don’t dream too much about me. Ok?” Met ondeugende ogen liet hij het me zien. Haar antwoord was: “Ok, I won’t, haha.”
Daarna hoorden we een tijdje niets van haar.
Na een week kreeg ik opnieuw een sms-je, waarin ze meldde: “coming back home on Sunday.”
En daar kwam ze: verwaaid, maar vrolijk en uitgerust.
Gde zat nog dezelfde avond bij haar op het terras en liet haar de hele avond niet meer alleen. Ik hoorde hun praten; de kamer ingaan, de kamer uitkomen, samen eten, en weer praten. Het klonk heel rustig allemaal en ik bemoeide me nergens mee.
Laat op de avond stond Aiko al weer naast de auto op Gde te wachten. Niet vergeefs, kreeg ik in de gaten. Ketut wist er meer van, maar zweeg in alle talen.

Vandaag, de dag na Galungan, kwam de ontknoping.
Janine gebruikte het ontbijt samen met een tevreden jongeman, die ik nog niet eerder had ontmoet. Hij werd aan mij voorgesteld als Kadek, haar vriend uit Karangasem. Wegens de feestdagen had hij een paar dagen vrij van zijn werk en hij kwam zijn nieuwe vriendinnetje ophalen om zijn vrije dagen met haar door te brengen. Janine pakte haar rugzak in en stalde haar koffertje in mijn kamer. Even later vertrokken ze samen op de motorbike.

Ik heb er verder niets aan toe te voegen.
Alleen het piepschuimen vliegtuigje ligt nog op de kast in Janine’s voormalige kamer.
Nu zoek ik nog een heel erg hoge boom om het  voorgoed in te hangen. “Ketut, can you help me please?”
