Divadlo hrál v New York Shakespeare Productions, kde dostal role např. v Bodas de sangre, What Would Jeanne Moreau Do (WPA Theatre) a El conde de Monte Cristo.

Za role v Tentação (1998), Adão e Eva (1995) a O Xangô de Baker Street (2001) získal portugalskou cenu Globo de Ouro v kategorii nejlepší herec.

V televizi si zahrál ve seriálech jako 24 (2003-2004), Miami Vice (1985), Nikita (1998) a The West Wing (2004).

Lots of good news is on the way, but isn’t it best to get the bad stuff out of the way first? Yeah,

Lots of good news is on the way, but isn’t it best to get the bad stuff out of the way first? Yeah, I thought so too.

When I went to make arrangements to have my furniture made (I realize that falls into the “good news” category, but wait a second and you’ll understand), I accidentally told the guy that I would pay him 1000 birr (about $90) more than I was saying in my head. I went out, thinking that it was all good until Kebede told me that I did “one bad thing.” Bummer. Hopefully we’ll get it straightened out tomorrow…

I had to fire Dawit (my little 11-year old boy that helped Zenabu in the garden) today. This is the 4th time I’ve had to talk to him about sitting around while I’m paying him to work. I felt kinda like I was killing the kid, but he handled it better than I did.

I leave on Sunday for a week in Dilla, where I will be attending a CHE training. I chose to put this in the “bad news” category, because I’m not at all excited about it yet. I’m traveling with someone that I can’t talk to, and have absolutely no idea when/where/how anything is happening for the whole week (aka, no control. I’ve never really thought of myself as a control freak, but maybe I am!)

My wireless internet is on the fritz and I have no idea how to fix it, and only 1 ½ days before I leave for Dilla. A whole week without internet would be hard….

And onto the good news!

I survived my first major holiday away from home, and it was great! I had clinic all day(that needs a post of its own), then Mary dropped me off at the hospital where I had a fantastic meal with that crew. And I wasn’t even homesick! I’m not sure I’ll be singing the same tune at Christmas.

However, I might actually be happy at Christmas, because my friend is one step closer to being able to come! He just has to figure out how to get some frequent flyer miles from the account of one of his family members (with her permission, of course) into his. If he comes, he’ll fly in on Christmas Eve night. That means I’ll be in Addis (yuck) for Christmas, but I’ll be with a friend from home!

I ordered furniture for my living room.

Arrangements are currently being made to paint my living room in the next few weeks.

My mom is sending me cute curtains for Christmas.

My uncle is feeling good after his second chemo treatment.

Baby Sophie is super cute and so fun.

Kebede and I went to the driving school today, and procured the driving manual (in Amharic, which Kebede will translate for me) AND my learner’s permit! Which means I can drive myself around! Of course I had a freak-out moment and made Kebede drive for the rest of the day, but that’s apparently just how I work. I’m sure that as I get more used to the idea, I’ll be ok.

Depending on her health, Mary is thinking about going to clinic twice a week after Christmas.

The weather here this time of year is perfect—70’s and sunny.

God is good.

I’m where I’m supposed to be.

I am redeemed, restored, and forgiven!

Lautenberg, the mere mention of the name should bring up thoughts of treasonous big government and mysandry. This is the man responsible for ruining the lives of untold numbers of men and women. The man that turned western law on it’s head by passing, in the dead of the night when no one was looking, ex post facto law. In clear violation of the Constitution, as well as his oath to support and defend that Constitution.

Since when did disagreeing with some ass hat in political power be sufficient cause for people to lose their unalienable or Constitutional rights? Well, I seriously cannot put the blame for that on obama. It’s been going on for quite some time ( Although the recent acceleration in attempts to achieve that can be laid at his administrations feet.) I won’t bother to say much about the international oppressors that did, and still do these things. People like Mao, Che, and a guy with a funny mustache come to mind.

But, this is America. Things like that have indeed happened in the past. We acknowledge those things, and have supposedly progressed beyond that sort of thinking. Part of American exceptionalism is that we actually do make corrections when something is being done that violates the Constitution or the Bill of Rights.

Unless of course, it involves the ATF, or Senator Lautenberg and or, his equally treasonous co-conspirator Senator Schumer. You thought that the days of Blacklisting based upon politics alone were something that went away with Joe McCarthy? Hate to inform you, but political bigotry is alive and well and will most probably be coming to a city or town near you soon.

I wonder how many times in our culture’s focus on retirement we remember that God put man in the garden to “tend and keep it” (Gen. 2.15). It was only after the fall that work became more toil than pleasure (Gen. 3.17-19). Yet there continues to be a sense of dignity, fulfillment and meaning that comes from doing work that provides for ourselves and our families.

This became all the more apparent during my recent trip to India. The ministry there has been using an approach called Community Health Evangelism or CHE (pronounced chay) for short. This new paradigm in world missions focuses on educating and training people to do for themselves what they can do instead of relying on others (most often the Western world) to do for them.

As our team of six traveled to various villages outside of Derha Dun in northern India, we had a chance to see how people’s lives were changed as they learned to do the work that not only made them less dependent on other people, but also aimed at improving their physical and spiritual lives.

One woman spoke with pride of the cow she had been able to obtain through a micro-loan. With this cow, she was now able to provide her children and some of the village children with milk. She hoped to purchase a bull in the near future. At another village, the women had begun making boxes they hoped to sell to local sweet shops. At still another village, a man had turned from alcohol and spousal abuse after hearing about Jesus’ work on the cross.

Perhaps most amazing of all was the slum we visited. While it was hard to imagine people living in small, single room shelters made from branches with thatch roofs covered with black plastic, it was exciting to see the area was clean; trash had been cleared away, soap pits had been built to remove standing water (where insects and disease often breed) and some of the living areas even had a finished look that came from a “plaster” made of mud and other local ingredients.

There is a sense of dignity that comes from doing the work needed to provide for ourselves and our families no matter if we live in one of the wealthier communities of the world, or one of the poorest.

What opportunity to work is before you that has the potential to bring dignity, fulfillment and meaming to your life?

That’s what they call hitchhiking in this country. I guess it makes a little more sense in Spanish—h

That’s what they call hitchhiking in this country. I guess it makes a little more sense in Spanish—hacer botella—well, grammatically at least.

I think the term originates from back when people used to have bottles in their cars for hitchhikers to put tips in. Haciendo or cogiendo botella in Cuba is a legitimate, government sponsored mode of transportation, because there is generally a shortage of transportation in this country, and extra space not being used in cars seems like a good thing to take advantage of. Although many people just stand on the side of the road holding out their hands or some small bills (usually no more than $1), outside of every major city there is an “amarillo” stand, where guys in yellow outfits run out into the middle of the highway and hold out cardboard signs that say PARE (stop), and shuffle people into cars/trucks/buses based on destination. I say it is government sponsored because government owned vehicles are required by law to stop and take travelers free of charge if they have the space (this does not always happen, bribes happen for line cutting and things like that).

Anyways, the reason I’m saying all this stuff about traveling in bottle is that I did it this weekend with two friends, we hitchhiked Cuban style all the way from Havana to the beautiful cities of Santa Clara and Cienfuegos in the center of the island and back—about 600 kilometers total, all for less than $2 each (it could have been less, too, but we were generous).

This is what happened:

Asked people how to get to an Amarillo stop in Havana. Got there, bumbled around a little stupidly (our first time!). Waited in the hot hot sun, I thought about how I should have packed my spf65 sunscreen instead of the 15.

Finally, after an hour or two of tired, impatient waiting (we’d been trying to get out of Havana for about 4 hours now) we hopped onto a bus that was going in the general direction we wanted to go. We got dropped off under a bridge about half an hour later, still closer to Havana than anything else. Waited. The good thing, though, was that there were a lot of Cubans with us in the same position, and though they weren’t ecstatic about all the cars driving past without stopping they didn’t seem too perturbed or antsy about the situation. I start to climb up the bridge to pass the time, and then lo and behold, just as I climb down, a truck stops, and the Cuban friend we made while waiting is waving frantically at us to get on. I climb on, or rather, I step on the wheel and then some men who are already up pull me over the side of the truck (it was pretty tall, and there were no foot holds), and then watch as my friend who is halfway up gets thrown off as the truck starts to drive away. Luckily, everyone starts to scream “Espérate!” so the truck stops again and then he gets on.

Our first camioneta! This is an open backed truck, you know, the old kind that normally carries boxes of things to sell. Ours had apparently been transporting large amounts of papaya before the humans got on, because the floor was covered in slippery black seeds and red pulp. Anyways, even though we couldn’t sit, my friend had almost died, I was getting severely sun/wind burned, and the truck looked like it was one pothole away from falling into pieces (not to mention a few oxygen particles away from crumbling), we felt like the kings of the world, because there we were, cruising down the national highway with all these Cubans on this tall truck, the wind blowing our hair in this majestic way, definitively leaving Havana for real, finally. I had seen something like this in “Guantanamera,” a Cuban movie, and thought it was pretty novel, and now there I was, doing it myself. I felt pretty cool.

Got dropped off at Jaguey, had dinner. In Jaguey there were tons of Chinese people (from China, a pretty rare sight in Cuba based on all the stares I get in the streets) for some reason (we walked into a restaurant and literally everyone inside was Chinese, and I burst out laughing then scuttled away) and I awkwardly avoided them. For some reason, my gutsiness turns off whenever I’m faced with large groups of Asians. I need to work on that.

Went to the side of the highway to try to get to Cienfuegos. By that time, it was dark, and we were a little worried. Luckily, however, everyone was stopping (this didn’t happen the other time) which was a good sign, even though no one wanted to go to Cienfuegos. Finally, we hopped onto a truck going to Santa Clara, which is a big city close to Cienfuegos that we considered going to, but didn’t seem as cool.

The second camioneta ride was one of the best parts of the entire trip. It was pitch black by the time we got on, and the Cuban national highway doesn’t have lights on it, so it was really really black. I used my backpack as a pillow and leaned back (no papaya gunk this time, just a lot of dirt). The sky was beautiful, llenísima de estrellas, with a little bright sliver of moon. I had never seen so many stars in my life. There were also some navy officers on the truck, and their outfits were billowing romantically in the wind.

Santa Clara: saw the Che museum and mausoleum. Rode in our first peso-horse carriage, and thought it was novel, but the next day we took two more. Like other things that seem novel, it was just one of those things about transportation that are pretty normal in Cuba.

Went to Cienfuegos. Indulged in having money and dished out $5 each for a taxi over there, but it was worth it, I think, because we got there in probably 1/5 of the time it would have taken. Also, in the United States, sometimes I dish out $5 for Boloco burritos.

Cienfuegos: extremely clean and orderly and pretty and nice. Felt not like Cuba, but somewhere else in Latin America, except for things were extraordinarily cheap. We got an illegal casa particular for $20 for the three of us, which was a great deal, especially because usually they make 3 people get two rooms. We did have to sleep 3 on a bed, however, which was not so nice. Luckily, went to a club that night and didn’t sleep too much. The club felt extremely un-Cuban as well, filled with people who looked like they had money, and no one was trying to hustle us. The best part of Cienfuegos was when we climbed up to this mirador which was a beautiful old crumbling mansion with a really tall tower and you could see the entire city and bay and it was so beautiful it felt like the entire trip was worth it just for being able to run around up there. Also there was a time when we climbed to the roof of our casa at night and sat up there talking, which was nice too.

Bottled our way back. Same old camioneta and Amarillo shit, even stopped in Jaguey for lunch again (ate at the same place, it was the only one with food), saw and avoided some Asians, got back to Havana, tanned, dirty, bruised, but alive and happy, and feeling pretty happy about ourselves.

Nijak. Ani to ładne, ani to ciekawe, ani to szokujące, ani pouczające, ani prawdziwe.

By William Gomes Recently, a Bengali lecturer of an English course in a private university was unabl

By William Gomes

Recently, a Bengali lecturer of an English course in a private university was unable to translate “Nogorayan” – a Bengali word that stands for “urbanization” – in a class when a student asked her for help. The teacher proudly said that she could not translate the word, since she was more familiar with English, had forgotten many Bengali words and felt more at home with English.

This is a common scenario for Bangladeshis, from lecturers to rickshaw drivers; they feel proud to learn English and wish to forget their mother language of Bangla. Even though these people dream in Bangla, think in Bangla and have their inner growth and imagination begin and end in Bangla, they still want to deny its existence. Some feel sad that their mother tongue was not English by birth; they feel cursed instead of blessed by the Bangla language.

The triumph of English and and the belittling of the mother tongue of Bangla in Bangladesh is tragic. The mushrooming growth of English-speaking schools recalls colonization to mind, where the education system controlled by the colonial powers propagated and institutionalized English.

In British India, the colonial forces tried their best to learn the native Indian languages, but found it really hard to master the more than 29 spoken languages present in India. They found it was easier to have the Indian people learn English instead.

While prominent Christian missionary William Carry was translating Bible into Bangla and Baptist missionaries Joshua Marshman, William Ward and John Clark Marshman were mastering Bangla and publishing the first Bangla newspaper, the Samachar Darpan, the colonial forces were projecting and propagating their racist and imperialist tool, using English to set up the empire for the future by getting the best minds of India through “brain drain” and by controlling their language. The politics of language were also practiced by the Pakistani government, when it forced Urdu as the official language upon the people of then East Pakistan, which is today Bangladesh.

When the colonial forces were kicked out from the Indian subcontinent, the nation needed to slowly make reforms in the use of language and counter the negative impact of having English as the primary and formal language used at the administrative level. In 1935, Calcutta University took the initiative and introduced Bangla as the language of education together with English. In Bangladesh, the use of Bangla at the college level started in the 1960s. This system continues on the Indian subcontinent.

After its independence from Pakistan, the government of Bangladesh made the decision to replace English with Bangla at the administrative level, but after the death of Sheikh Mujib, this process came to a halt and English continued to be the primary language. The process was continued when Hussain Muhammad Ershad introduced the Bangla Procholon Aeen, or Bangla Implementation Act, of 1987.

The scenario has changed in Bangladesh. At different administrative levels, Bangla is the official language. But, although the lower courts carry out their activities in Bangla, English remain influential since many of the judges in the high courts and Supreme Court give their verdicts in English.

The influence of English is even greater in the areas of science and technology, for the sake of higher education. Major problems include the fact that there are not enough books in Bangla to teach with and that most of the books and references are in English or other languages.

Everyone is obviously not learning English because they like English or Shakespeare or Elizabeth Bishop, etc. They are learning it because the English language has established itself as the language of the world. The English language has an influential history. It started its journey as a West Germanic language in the early 5th century A.D. and, gradually, with the growth of British Empire, it spread beyond the British Isles; by the late nineteenth century, it had become the first global “lingua franca”.

From the Roman invasion of England by Julius Caesar in 55 B.C. to any aggression against other countries, the English language was often a tool of imperialist politics. Nowadays, English is used as the official language in 53 countries and 300 to 400 million people use English as their primary language all around the world. Many religious and state entities have patronized English.

On Feb. 21, 1952, several people were killed by police as thousands protested for their right to use the Bangla language. Rabindranath Tagore, given the name Gurudev, and other Bengalis have given the Bangla language a place of honor in the world. If we Bangla-speaking people can focus on Bangla, the rest of the world be in our hands; many “Gurudevs” will shine before the world. Then, the imperialist politics of English will collapse.
