Author: Otis F Cooper
Source: articleage.com

You really enjoy those dvd movies, dvd, and games and the last thing you need or want is to experience problems with your dvd drive.
To prepare for the possibility of having your, dvd, dvd drive leaving you out in the cold one morning,we will dicuss problems that may cause dvd failure as well as the procedures you should take, dvd, to correct, dvd, these problems.
As with all drives,be sure to double check the failure. If the dvd drive will not read the dvd, try, dvd, running, dvd, another dvd in the drive.Make sure the dvd has no scratches and is clean.
Visually inspect the drive if the drive is external and if the drive is enternal, check the computer.Check to see if the computer has good ventilation to help keep it cool. Here are the common dvd problems with their solutions.
DVD DRIVE HAS NO POWER
First..For external drives that have no power, first check to see if anything or anyone has caused the power cord to become unplugged, dvd, .Rule out the wall outlet by plugging in another device such as a radio and see if it plays.
Second…If you’ve proven the wall outlet to be, dvd, good, but you still don’t have power, check the surge protector for any signs of damage. If the surge protector is good, check the cord.
Third..If you’re certain the surge protector or wall outlet is providing power, double check the cord by plugging it in a few times. If no power is present, you will have to replace the cord or the drive itself.
Internal dvd drives receive their power from the connector from the power supply.Try another connector to the drive. if the internal dvd drive still does not receive power, dvd, after using another connector, the drive is faulty.
DRIVE HAS POWER BUT TRAY WON’T OPEN
You may experience the tray failing to open.Should this happen, press the button a couple times to see if it will open.If the, dvd, tray fail to open, reboot your computer and try to open the tray.
When rebooting the system, notice the monitor to see if the drive is recognized by the computer. Some systems will not display installed hardware during bootup. If this is the case, you will have to access your BIOS to check if the dvd drive is being registered.
You can also try the manual eject button on the drive to get it to open.Use something very small but firm to press in the pinhole in front of the drive to open the tray.
Shut the computer off and unplug it.Use something like a long paperclip to insert in the pinhole to open the tray. The tray may open a couple inches and you can grab it with your fingers to open it completely.
DRIVE IS NOT RECOGNIZED BY WINDOWS
Be sure the operating system is recognizing the drive by clicking on My Computer.Windows XP will show “drives with removable storage”.If your drive is present, highlight the drive, right click and select properties.Click on properties and you should see “this drive is working properly”.
If you see another message such as “this drive, dvd, is not working properly”,you may be able to update the device driver. If the drive is not present in My computer, reboot the computer and access the cmos setup.
In the cmos setup, the dvd drive should be present. The drive may, dvd, not be properly installed or one, dvd, of the cables have become disconnected if the drive is missing
If you check the drive cables and are certain they are connected correctly,it may, dvd, be that the data cable is faulty and the drive controller may be at fault. And we can’t overlook the fact that the drive itself may be bad.
DRIVE HAS POWER BUT WILL NOT READ DVD
First..try another dvd since a dirty or scratched dvd may not play.If the new dvd fail to play as well, check to see if the operating system is recognizing the drive
Click on My Computer and highlight the, dvd, dvd drive.Right click, dvd, and select properties. The statement “This device is working properly” should be present. If not or you see another, dvd, message, try to update the device driver.
In the, dvd, My Computer screen, highlight the dvd drive, and select the Properties screen, select Drivers, and then select update device driver.
Another cause may be the Windows Registry is corrupt. You can use software utilities such as PC Bug, dvd, Doctor to repair your registry. Download this free repair utility, dvd, at http://www.pcbugdoctor.com/download.html.
To make, dvd, a backup, dvd, of your registry with Windows 98, just go to Start, select Run, enter scanregw and click OK, dvd, . This will run Scanregw.exe.
Restore your registry in Windows 98 by typing scanreg / restore at the Dos Prompt. You can also use.Winrescue XP at http://www.superwin.com/index.htm is a neat little utility for backup and restore of Windows XP.
The dvd drive or writer is an awesome storage and data backup drive.Use it to the fullest to enjoy music, video, audio, and more.Understand everything about, dvd, this drive before, dvd, something goes wrong.
Should your audio die on you, check the dvd to be sure it is not dirty or damaged.Look at the audio cable for signs of looseness.Inspect this cable to be sure it is inserted in the connector completely and that is indeed inserted in the, dvd, correct connector.
If you have a dvd drive, take the time to visit the support web site and download the latest device drivers or patches to keep your drive running at peak performance.

A recent post from Raymond Chen reminded me of the time when I was in university and I wrote a friend a cheque for Π Shekels.

Wanting to see if it would accepted, we placed it in a deposit box (to nullify the effect of facing the cashier).

I put the Greek letter Π in the numerical field and “פאי” (“Pi”) in the textual field.

This is a forgery based on a sample from Wikipedia

Several days later my account was debited by 3.14 NIS (~1$), I was a bit peeved that they rounded Pi to only two decimal points but decided it’s as good as I could have expected.

I called the bank and asked for a photocopy of the offending cheque (this was before you could see cheques online), the person taking my call was rather surprised since the fee for ordering a photocopy cheque to be sent was higher than the cheque’s amount.

My friend suggested that our next experiment would be with אo Shekels but I declined.

All this was before I heard of Knuth’s custom of writing cheques for hex-dollars.

This story has a sad story since I lost the photocopy of this cheque one of the times I moved…

Unsere Profimessgeräte zeigten viele unterschiedliche Werte an.

There’s a few different brands of mobile spytools out there to choose from, but none of them are as flexible or powerful as the company Flexispy. The main reason for this is because as a trucker you will always be on the road and without access to your wife’s phone. So having remote capabilities are of imperative importance.

Flexispy allows you to activate settings literally from anywhere on earth there is a mobile connection. An internet connection is only required to set up the software. When phone activity is recorded to the main server you have an option to relay the information to your email, which in turn can be relayed one more time to your mobile phone. So this is a truly closed system with full remote surveillance capabilities. On some versions you even have the ability to remove the software altogether by sending a special command. Virtually all commands can be sent by SMS text to control functions once installation has been completed.

Using the phone which is to be monitored, simply point the phone’s internet browser to the download site and the download begins automatically. The download takes a couple of minutes and once its completed simply restart the phone. After the installation has been completed you will have to setup the software. To do this just enter the secret code into the phone’s keypad and the screen will come up. At this point look for the monitor number setting and simply enter your phone number, after this point all call information as well as SIM card change notification will be sent to your personal mobile phone.

That’s pretty much it to actually get the software working, now all you have to do is choose which package from Flexispy will suit you best.

Adding perfmon counters using nrpe and centreon

First Create a Command Definition inside Centreon that looks like this. Naturally alter the globals

First Create a Command Definition inside Centreon that looks like this. Naturally alter the globals to fit inside your organisation.

Notice the Argument example, when you test it in this form you might also notice that you get a valid response from the server. Sadly this argument will not work inside the service definition.

Next Create a Service definition that utilizes this check command to check a specific counter. In my example i am using the MSExchange OWA\Total Users counter that is part of the new Exchange 2007 Perfmon counters. It will not work with a older exchange version. Use Perfmon on the destination machine to locate the right counters for your organisation.

Notice the difference in the passed Argument. To make this check command work you need to slightly alter the argument because the application is making the strings “save” when these settings are stored. The result is that some of the characters will be escaped. This can luckly be countered by participating this behavior.

We need the check_nrpe binairy to parse the escaped characters as literals and make centreon believe that we have already escaped the unsafe chars by adding slashes to each present slash, and add a double qoute at the start and the end to make check_nrpe binary parse the argument correctly. The outcome should look somewhat like this.

If this is the counter you want to check, and lets make it chalanging

\MSExchangeTransport Queues(_total)\Messages Queued For Delivery

Then the service argument for $ARG1$ in my example should look like this inside the Centreon service definition.

!\"\\MSExchangeTransport Queues(_total)\\Messages Queued For Delivery\"!(ARG2)!(ARG3)!

The result will be the following.

I hope this will help you tackle the “Counter” chalanges that Centreon will present when using the NSCLient++ and Check_NRPE commands.

I recently learned of a friends baby being injured in an accident when he fell from his crib, after attempting to climb out of it.He is at that age where many babies under the age of two, become actively involved in dangerous behavior, because they do not know any better.

The child got twisted up in a bumper as he fell, and was left hanging from the side of it.

Luckily for him, it was under his arm and not his neck,so the injury was mild compared to what could have happened, but the fear that the mom experienced was terribly frightening.I could tell from her voice, as she told the whole story to me.

This got me to investigate the design of the crib, and I questioned how could it be improved,in order to prevent it from happening in the future,or should she just get a new crib,or step up to a day bed since he is getting bigger.

I am not an engineer, but I do like to build things and modify tools, in order to make them better, and I am sure that the people at the Consumer Product and Safety Commission ask themselves these questions every day, as they go about testing the reliability and safety for all consumer products on the market today. Babies need advocates like them looking after their safety.

There is no category that needs to be regulated more than the baby product category, given that the stakes are so high for mother’s and babies worldwide.

To that end, today comes a report from ABC News that The Consumer Product Safety Commission is expected to announce one of the largest crib recalls in history. The concern is over unsafe drop down sides on the cribs.

The recall involves cribs with drop down sides, because the CPSC said they can cause strangulation if a child gets stuck in a gap between the side rail and the headboard.

From CBS news.com comes this report….”Parents like the convenience of having the side drop down,” CPSC Chair Inez Tenenbaum said, adding the hardware used by many manufacturers to make the sides drop isn’t “substantial.”

Tenenbaum said that the commission has been relying on “voluntary standards” for crib safety, but that the group will now propose regulations.

“We find that is no longer enough. We will now be writing (proposing) federal regulations that are mandatory for cribs,” Tenenbaum said.

The CPSC suggests checking the hardware to see if it seems solid. Feel the side rail: If you can move it back and forth, that can be dangerous.

It points to potentially inadequate hardware and the potential for a gap opening. And the CPSC suggests parents stop using the side rail – do not put it up and down anymore.

The CPSC has recalled more than 5 million cribs in the last two years…

It is not yet known which models will be subject to recall.

This will be the largest recall in the United States ever, so chances are that many readers will own, or know of someone who owns a defective crib, and should be alerted.

Click on these news services for more information about the recall, and consult your local dealer if you think you own an affected crib…

It is very likely that most of us have taken a mint when walking out of a restaurant. A lot of times

It is very likely that most of us have taken a mint when walking out of a restaurant. A lot of times these mints are not wrapped up; a spoon was probably there so that people don’t touch unwrapped mints with their dirty hands. I don’t know about you, but I just grab one with my hands anyways. I actually got reprimanded at Whole Foods the other day because I took a nut out of the nut container with my bare hands. So why am I talking about this?

Well, as coined by Rory on a Gilmore Girls episode, these mints are “urine mints.” He stated that urine mints occur “when people go to the bathroom and they don’t wash their hands and they come out and take a mint.” Does this make any of us cringe, thinking that we may be consuming even a “poopie mint?” That grosses me out.

According to Snopes.com, there is no legislation related to the sanitary measures taken on mints in restaurants. There has been talk of legislation though.

Also, after reading an article on Helium.com, I have adopted some of the necessary precautions in order to avoid taking contaminated mints. The five most useful pointers were:

-Use your eyes!! Look around, is the restroom dirty, is the restaurant in good condition? Ask these questions.

-Wash your hands in order to contribute to the overly sanitary atmosphere of the restaurant.

-Check for signs in the restrooms stating when it was last cleaned.

-Are there handtowels or paper towels? A restroom with hand towels is definitely less sanitary than a bathroom with paper towels.

-DON’T EAT THE MINTS! Bring your own, that you know are clean!

Librarian Georgette Bordine at Camelback High School in Phoenix said the books were checked out in 1959.

The person, who wanted to remain anonymous, calculated the fee as 4c a day, with some extra in case the rates had changed, media reports said.

Apparently the books were inadvertently packed when the student moved state.

Ms Bordine said the money would be used to buy more books, with the overdue ones – about conservation – returned to the shelves.

Tanning bed safety is your ultimate protection against the negative effects of tanning on your skin.

Tanning bed safety is your ultimate protection against the negative effects of tanning on your skin. Although most people claim to understand the dangers of tanning beds, rarely do they know the safe facts of tanning beds.

1. Find a great tanning bed

Not only will your tan depend on using a high quality bed in your home but so will your safety. With so many options out there, be sure to research each possible bed in depth before making your big purchase.

If you’re visiting a tanning salon, make sure they maintain their beds and check that they have tanning safety advice posters in full view.

2. Use only the best tanning lotions

Your tanning lotion helps determine the amount of UVA and UVB rays reaching your skin. Using hydrating tanning lotions made specifically for tanning beds will help keep your skin young, safe, and luscious.

Due to the ultraviolet rays given out by tanning beds, your skin may age prematurely from the effects of sunburn or skin cancer. Your may also feel sick when the rays from the bed begin to wear away at your immune system.

3. Stay in for the right time

In our endeavors to get great tans, some of us ignore all the safety facts and warnings on our beds. If your maximum exposure time in the tanning bed per day is supposed to be twenty minutes, only stay in the bed for twenty minutes.

4. Use the right protection

Besides great tanning lotions, you should also use protective goggles. Although Federal law doesn’t control what you do in your home tanning bed, the guidelines exist to keep your eyes safe and healthy.

5. Check the Wattage

When choosing a tanning bed, there is a lot to know. One of the most important parts of your bed is the wattage that it uses. Tanning beds can be either high output (HO) or very high output (VHO). HO beds use 100 watt lamps, while VHO beds can use up to 168 watt tanning lamps.

Unless you have a special reason for buying a VHO tanning bed, you will probably want to choose an HO bed since they are cheaper and easier to purchase and re-lamp. Some HO beds may try to sell you on them by claiming to have a high UVB, but these lamps will only increase your risk of burning rather than tanning.

6. Check The Safety Advice

Before tanning, you should consider your reactions to sun exposure and your family history. These factors can affect your personal danger when tanning. When visiting the salon, you should always wear the protective safety goggles provided by the company. By being aware of the danger, you can take care of your body and tan safely.

7. Keep up to date

The only way to know what’s going on in the tanning bed industry is to keep up. Check for new guidelines, regulations, and safe facts regularly so that your tanning experience is the best.

Knowing the safe facts about tanning will allow you to make the best decisions regarding your tanning bed whether at home or in a salon and to keep your skin healthy and glowing for years to come.

On Thursday I completely finished my Graduate School Applications by taking a trip to the mail room,

On Thursday I completely finished my Graduate School Applications by taking a trip to the mail room, asking some questions at the Graduate Admission’s Office, and making another appointment with Graduate School Advisor Pat Taylor. I also dropped off the Recommendation Forms to my professors that graciously accepted my requests (thanks again Professor Lepre!).

A funny thing happened while I strolled through campus carrying a folder that detailed my agenda for the day. As I walked from place to place, I could not help but notice the lack of familiar faces surrounding me. In fact, I could not point out one person whom I knew during the course of this two hour activity.

I suddenly felt lost in a crowd of people that I have never met before. I guess you know you are a Senior when you can’t recognize a single person, since most of your friends are out either enduring internships or working on their capping courses. I suppose this was my first dose of Senioritus kicking in, which I’ll happily accept with open arms as substitute to Swine Flu.

One of the hardest tasks of the day was simply trying to find the Recommendation Forms for each school I had applied to online. Either I am computer illiterate, which is definitely not the case, or some of these websites need to be reformatted. Marist’s website was so bad that I had to go to the office and psychically pick up a form, a job that would have taken a two hour drive had it not been for my present attendance at the school.

When it was all said and done, I could not help feeling a sense of accomplishment as I crossed off each item on my list. I know that my fellow classmates who are planning on applying to Graduate School will be extremely jealous, but as of today I have finished everything and anything there is to do with applying to Graduate School.

My job for the next six months of my collegiate career is to keep my grades intact and wait for a school to admit me before a psych ward does. And unlike my friends who are studying for GRE’s and writing fifty page papers, I will have an obscene amount of free time starting next week, so here’s to you senioritus.

What would you prefer: Swine Flu or Senioritus?

AP/Calvin Woodward—Sarah Palin’s new book reprises familiar claims from the 2008 presidential campaign that haven’t become any truer over time. Ignoring substantial parts of her record if not the facts, she depicts herself as a frugal traveler on the taxpayer’s dime, a reformer without ties to powerful interests and a politician roguishly indifferent to high ambition.

Palin goes adrift, at times, on more contemporary issues, too. She criticizes President Barack Obama for pushing through a bailout package that actually was achieved by his Republican predecessor George W. Bush — a package she seemed to support at the time.

A look at some of her statements in “Going Rogue,” obtained by The Associated Press in advance of its release Tuesday:

PALIN: Says she made frugality a point when traveling on state business as Alaska governor, asking “only” for reasonably priced rooms and not “often” going for the “high-end, robe-and-slippers” hotels.

THE FACTS: Although travel records indicate she usually opted for less-pricey hotels while governor, Palin and daughter Bristol stayed five days and four nights at the $707.29-per-night Essex House luxury hotel (robes and slippers come standard) overlooking New York City’s Central Park for a five-hour women’s leadership conference in October 2007. With air fare, the cost to Alaska was well over $3,000. Event organizers said Palin asked if she could bring her daughter. The governor billed her state more than $20,000 for her children’s travel, including to events where they had not been invited, and in some cases later amended expense reports to specify that they had been on official business.

PALIN: Boasts that she ran her campaign for governor on small donations, mostly from first-time givers, and turned back large checks from big donors if her campaign perceived a conflict of interest.

THE FACTS: Of the roughly $1.3 million she raised for her primary and general election campaigns for governor, more than half came from people and political action committees giving at least $500, according to an AP analysis of her campaign finance reports. The maximum that individual donors could give was $1,000; $2,000 for a PAC. Of the rest, about $76,000 came from Republican Party committees. She accepted $1,000 each from a state senator and his wife and $30 from a state representative in the weeks after the two Republican lawmakers’ offices were raided by the FBI as part of an investigation into a powerful Alaska oilfield services company. After AP reported those donations during the presidential campaign, she gave a comparative sum to charity.

PALIN: Rails against taxpayer-financed bailouts, which she attributes to Obama. She recounts telling daughter Bristol that to succeed in business, “you’ll have to be brave enough to fail.“

THE FACTS: Palin is blurring the lines between Obama’s stimulus plan — a $787 billion package of tax cuts, state aid, social programs and government contracts — and the federal bailout that Republican presidential candidate John McCain voted for and President George W. Bush signed.

Palin’s views on bailouts appeared to evolve as McCain’s vice presidential running mate. In September 2008, she said “taxpayers cannot be looked to as the bailout, as the solution, to the problems on Wall Street.” A week later, she said “ultimately what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health care reform that is needed to help shore up our economy.”

During the vice presidential debate in October, Palin praised McCain for being “instrumental in bringing folks together” to pass the $700 billion bailout. After that, she said “it is a time of crisis and government did have to step in.”

PALIN: Writes about a city councilman in Wasilla, Alaska, who owned a garbage truck company and tried to push through an ordinance requiring residents of new subdivisions to pay for trash removal instead of taking it to the dump for free — this to illustrate conflicts of interest she stood against as a public servant.

THE FACTS: As Wasilla mayor, Palin pressed for a special zoning exception so she could sell her family’s $327,000 house, then did not keep a promise to remove a potential fire hazard on the property.

She asked the city council to loosen rules for snow machine races when she and her husband owned a snow machine store, and cast a tie-breaking vote to exempt taxes on aircraft when her father-in-law owned one. But she stepped away from the table in 1997 when the council considered a grant for the Iron Dog snow machine race in which her husband competes.

PALIN: Says she tried to talk about national security and energy independence in her interview with Vogue magazine but the interviewer wanted her to pivot from hydropower to high fashion.

THE FACTS are somewhat in dispute. Vogue contributing editor Rebecca Johnson said Palin did not go on about hydropower. “She just kept talking about drilling for oil.“

___

PALIN: “Was it ambition? I didn’t think so. Ambition drives; purpose beckons.” Throughout the book, Palin cites altruistic reasons for running for office, and for leaving early as Alaska governor.

THE FACTS: Few politicians own up to wanting high office for the power and prestige of it, and in this respect, Palin fits the conventional mold. But “Going Rogue” has all the characteristics of a pre-campaign manifesto, the requisite autobiography of the future candidate.
