Der LVS-Check steht am Anfang von jeder Skitour in der Gruppe.

Auch ein LVS-Gerät kann mal defekt sein. Deshalb schaltet ein Mitglied in der Gruppe sein LVS-Gerät auf Empfang und lässt die anderen der Gruppe mit eingeschaltetem LVS-Gerät passieren. Somit wird sichergestellt, dass alle ihr LVS-Gerät eingeschaltet haben und die LVS-Geräte korrekt funktionen.

Dadurch dass die Empfangsreichweite von LVS-Geräten immer größer wird und gerade am Ausgangspunkt am Parkplatz oder vor der Hütte sich immer mehr fremde Skigeher mit eingeschaltetem LVS-Gerät bewegen, kann es hier auch mal zu einem Irrtum kommen und man wird von einem fremden LVS-Gerät getäuscht.

Deshalb hat der LVS Spezialist Pieps hat nun erstmals ein kleines Testgerät, den Pieps Checker auf den Markt gebracht. The board game backgammon is one of the most ancient games known to man. It is believed that early variations of the game were played in Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia and Ancient Rome. Since then, the game has evolved, changed several names and spread to different parts of the world. It is currently a popular pastime all over the US, East Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

In order to play backgammon all you need is a partner, two dice and a special backgammon board with checkers. The backgammon board is divided into two sides with each one is the mirror reflection of the other. Each side contains 12 triangles called points numbered from 1 to 24.
Points 1 to 6: Home Board or Inner Board
Points 7 to 12: Outer Board
7 point: Bar Point
13 point: Mid Point

At the starting position of the game, each player has 2 checkers on the 24 point, 3 checkers on the 8 point and 5 on the 13 and 6 point. Each player moves from his home board through the outer board towards the opponent home board.

The object of backgammon, then, is to move your checkers towards your opponent home board and remove them off the board before your opponent moves his checkers towards your home board. The speed of the progress of each move is determined by the outcome of the dice roll.

The backgammon play begins with both players tossing one die. The player whose outcome is the highest, makes the first move using both his and his opponents number. If the outcome of the dice toss is even, the players toss the dice again until an uneven outcome appears. From now on, each player tosses both dice on his turn.

After each toss of dice, you should move your checkers forward the number of steps appears on both dice. You can move either one checker the number of steps summed up by both die or move two checkers. To make it clearer: if the outcome of the dice roll is 5 and 4, you can either move one checker 9 steps forward or move one checker 5 steps forward and then move the other piece 4 steps forward

If the dice rolls a double, which means an even number on both dice, you can move double the number appears on the dice. For example, if you roll double 2, you can move 2 points four times. In that case, you can either move one checker 8 steps forward; move two checkers a total of 4 steps; move two checkers a total of 2 steps each plus a total of 4 steps; move one checker a total of 6 steps plus 2 steps; or move four checkers 2 steps.

You can move a checker to a point where there is another one of your checkers or no more than one checker of your opponent, called blot. When you hit a blot, it is moved to the middle of the board to the part divided between the home board and the outer boards, called the bar.

The checkers placed on the bar are kept out of play until the bar can be entered by a dice roll in the opponent’s home boards. For example, if you roll 2, you can enter a checker to the 23 point and enter the opponents home board and re enter the bar checkers into the game. You cannot move the other checkers unless your entire bar checkers are at your opponents home board.

By the time your checkers are in your home board, you must remove the checkers from the board, to bear off, using a roll of dice. For example, if you roll 1, you can bear off one checker from the 1 point; if you roll 2, you can move a checker form the 2 point, and so on.

If your opponent has not borne off any checkers while you have borne off 15 checkers, you win the gammon. If your opponent has not borne off any checkers and still some of his checkers are placed on the bar, while you have borne off 15 checkers, then you win the backgammon.

Sometimes doing nothing is as hard as doing something, at least when it comes to continues self improvement. The past few months my well of writing has been dried up, for several reasons, one being my attitude and in to that really a loss of words and tons of other work to do, and mix it all together and BAM.. Nothing to post for a long long time, well at least nothing consistently.

Today I started to blog, than was pulled away, yet I returned to try once more. Why, well because I think I have something to say… In truth, I found it hard not to blog, I missed it, I like the process, I like the creativity, and I like to think. So to me blogging is a great thing, the only part I don’t like is the spelling, I suck at it, and spell checker misses things sometimes, but such is life…

Why is it hard to do nothing? Why would I make such a statement, well because if you are like me,and like to always be “doing” that nothing is not “doing” it’s “nothing”. Now please understand that I do a lot of nothingness when I get home, or after my other work is done, but during the work hours I hate nothingness… And as for the process of creating a new me, well that’s a 24/7 job, and this blog is all part of that process. So when I don’t blog I’m not working an the new me… Well that’s how i use to think of it, but I have changed my view point on that. I think in a way it has been good for me to not post, to miss it, to miss the process the creativity and the satisfaction of posting my thoughts for the world to read.

When I started this blog I would get extremely upset with myself if I did not post a blog, but as of late I don’t get upset, I just miss it.

Creativity is always flowing in me, some days more than others but it’s always there, and on some days it’s a struggle to keep it all in and on other days the trickle is so small its a waste of time to even try. And I discovered that if I am in a really bad place, my mood way off kilter, that I really can’t write, that really dries up my creative pool, the past few months have been very stressful for me, and in truth I just found it extremely hard to write a positive live changing thought, so I didn’t. Now maybe I should have, maybe I needed to, but I don’t think so, I really thing I needed that nothingness to fill me, to envelope me and hold me even if just for a little while.

I am starting to get the bug to blog  more, the need to post is returning, and I truly think it was because I did not force myself to blog when my heart just was not in to it. Now I could be wrong, but I don’t think so, this just feel right…

In Adobe Acrobat, when you run an accessibility check you are given the option to select the criteria you would like to check your file against. I would like to explain what some of the various options can do, as well as when you should use each while working to create accessible PDF files.

Adobe PDF
Adobe PDF is the most lenient of the bunch, but it can be a nice jumping off point when you are working your initial drafts. For example, I will often run an Adobe PDF check to verify that it is ready to go to the next steps in compliance.  As a rule, if your PDF fails to pass an Adobe PDF check, it will not pass Section 508 or WCAG. So when you run your check and your tab order is off or your language is not specified, go back and check your work.

Section 508
In the U.S., when we create accessible files we are working to meet a set of criteria established by the Federal government as part of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The Section 508 web site is chock full of great information about the requirements, but the accessibility checker in Acrobat can leave quite a bit to be desired. Most often, the checker will find no problems in the document but require quite a bit of manual verification. If you are not familiar with the requirements of 508, you can easily mistake a non-compliant file for a compliant one.

WCAG 1.0 & 2.0
WCAG, or Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, is series of Web accessibility guidelines published by the W3C’s Web Accessibility Initiative. When it comes to running an Adobe accessibility check, the WCAG reports that are generated have always been more detailed than the 508 reports. For example, a 508 check will not reveal problems associated with not have a language defined for the file while the WCAG will prompt you to change it. I have found WCAG to be far more useful when working with tables, which is interesting when considering that Section 508 also requires clearly defined headers and read order for tables. Also, although 1.0 appears in the accessibility checker as current, with the release of WCAG 2.0 in December 2008, you should not rely on passing 1.0 alone. The new WCAG standard is 2.0.

Putting it all together
As a general rule, you should not rely on the accessibility checker in Acrobat to verify that your document is accessible or complying with Federal regulations. A better course of action is to be proactive about familiarizing yourself with the different standards and using the checker as a tool rather than a certification of compliance. It is important to remember that just because the checker doesn’t detect any problems, the content still may not be fully accessible to someone using a screen reader. Checking your document on a screen reader (such as JAWS) will always be the best way to verify that your document is fully accessible. If you do not have access to a screen reader, you can use the “Read Out Loud” feature in Acrobat to verify that the document is being read in the proper order. You can also using the “Touch Up Reading Order” tools to check your document hierarchy, tags, and order. The reading order tool is especially useful when checking for artifacts, which will not be played when read out loud or detected when running the compliance checker. Can you imagine what would happen if you accidentally flagged an important graph as an artifact? (After a long day, it can happen!)

8 Steps to Checking Accessibility in Acrobat

When I am checking a file for 508 compliance, I practice the following steps:

1. I make sure to export a tagged, bookmarked document from the source file.
2. In Acrobat, I open the Document Properties and verify that the PDF is tagged. While in the dialog box, I make sure that the  filename is correct (not too long, no spaces or special characters), add the title and keywords, and specify the document’s language.
3. Use the “Touch Up Reading Order” tool and Tags pane to verify that things are tagged correctly and in their proper order. Use the Table Inspector to verify that tables are structured properly, and add any table descriptions.
4. Using my own checklist based on the different requirements, I review the file for errors (especially useful for things like color requirements, etc).
5. Run the accessibility checker for Adobe PDF and correct any errors until it passes.
6. Run the accessibility checker for 508 and correct any errors until it passes.
7. Run the accessibility checker for WCAG (1.0 and 2.0), correcting errors until it passes.
8. Finally, if the document has been especially tricky, play the document using the “Read Out Loud” feature.
