Have you ever noticed that some 10K runs are actually open to people who want to do a 10K walk? We might assume that the walkers would get run over by the runners but this is far from the truth. In most cases the walkers are accepted as part of the group.

Many people enjoy taking a leisurely 10K walk instead of training to run that distance. They enjoy the scenery as they walk by it and they like the excitement of the race. Some of these races will have a competitive walking division while others will just give space to the walkers.

As an example, sometimes the walkers will start before or after the runners so that they can be at their own pace. Some people are going to just walk casually for the 10K walk and if that is the case they won’t need a lot of training to do it. However if you want to be competitive with your walking you will need to train for the 10K walk.

After finally managing to mount the new LCD TV on the wall of my living room I sat back to admire my new toy. As pretty as it looked hanging there in mid air, I realised that I was going to have to do something about the dangling wires. The black and red tubes sprouting from the back of the TV were hanging like unwelcome snakes from the branch of a tree, right down from the middle of my cream coloured wall and onto the carpet.

After contemplating my predicament for half an hour I realised that I had one of two choices. Either I could learn to live with the wires as they were (possibly painting the entire living room in a darker colour so as to blend in with the rubbery cables) or I could buy something to stick in front of them.

I had already spent a small fortune on the TV however I didn’t much fancy the task of painting the whole of my living room another colour just to camouflage a few unsightly wires. Taking what I thought was the more sensible of the two options I hopped on the computer to try and find some shelf fitments that I could put in under the TV. It would have to be something big because the TV was quite high on my wall and I would need it to house the DVD player and the freeview box, then there was also the XBOX and the Playstation to think about.

After a week or so of scouring the web (I live in a rural area so choice of furniture shops are minimal) I eventually found something that looked almost ideal. The measurements fitted perfectly and the colour of the wood would be perfectly in keeping with the rest of my living room furniture.

After buying and paying for the piece I waited eagerly for its delivery. Taking a day off work on the estimated arrival date I sat by the front door and waited. After a few hours a huge truck pulled up outside and a hairy looking man popped out holding a clipboard. When the formalities were over I helped him carry the box to my door, thanked him and left.

After a few hours of assembling I pushed the new fitment across the carpet and under the television. It fitted perfectly and looked brilliant. The varnished wood creating a pleasant reflection from the television on it’s highly polished surface.

I sighed and stood back to admire my work, made a cup of tea and sat down with the remote control. It was then that I discovered a problem.

The shelf fitment was a crucial centimetre too high. To change the channel with the remote control I had to stand up to point the buttons at the right part of the TV, completely taking away the actual point of having a remote control. A semi remote it now was.

I bought the LCD to improve my quality of life. I guess I’ll have to settle for stronger thigh muscles.

Oh sweet baby Jesus, where has this movie been all my life? This so much more than redeems the crap-tastic I Love You, Beth Cooper movie of last week. This movie has everything that I require in a great Teen Comedy…hot guys, great music, snappy dialogue, and, of course, cheerleaders. I can’t help it; I’m all about the cheerleader movies. I guess it all started with Bring It On! and never stopped.

Two football players who want to chase more tail than yards decide that this year their going to ditch two sweltering weeks in the El Paso sun to attend cheer camp with 300 of the hottest girls on the planet, or at least Illinois. The guys are your typical asshats that you would expect to see in a high school flick. The lothario, Nick (Eric Christian Olsen) claims that after 30 days a conquest’s name is erased from his brain to make room for new names. He’s adorable in the ‘cute-smashed-face-puppy’ kind of way. The sensitive but still asshatty Shawn (Nicholas D’Agosto) plays on his intelligence and charm to woo the ladies. And it works. He has the lovable ‘boy-down-under-your-bed’ vibe.
The boys are able to weasel their way onto the squad and get to go to cheer heaven, where they systematically sleep with as many girls as possible in two weeks. Then we reach the conflict of the film, Shawn goes and falls in love (moron maneuver #1) with the captain of his squad (moron maneuver #2). Nick decides to help out his buddy, and then we have lots of humor mixed with some actual genuine friendship. Unfortunately, they are found out, exposed, and kicked out of camp. They return to their football buddies and then as you might expect, both realize that they truly love being a part of the squad and help lead the girls to a non-quite victory.

As I said before, sweet baby Jesus, this movie is awesome. I honestly laughed so hard I almost peed my pants. My rating is a hands-down 5 stars. No questions from the peanut gallery, all the voices in my head agree on this one.

I just told my staunchest cheerleader that I wouldn’t talk about this on my blog, but I’m still laughing so I have to get it out of my system. I have managed to create a rather loveable and endearing character in my book, and in chapter 26 he apparently gets shot from behind and dies. At this point things go from bad to worse for the other characters as well, but let’s focus on this moment.

I love my cheerleader dearly, I am thrilled to have written something that has her hooked, and I have to admit to being awfully proud to have sent her into a tizzy. I feel a little guilty, really I do, but mostly proud. I have obviously written the character and the chapter in such a way that it reached out and grabbed her. This is something every author strives to do, and while I should feel bad for causing my friend to suffer, I can’t contain the feeling of glee and pride in knowing I was able to craft words in such a strong manner.

I would post more, but the same cheerleader has warned me that she is not a patient woman. I must get back to the story – I’m only on chapter 27 and the information she’s waiting for isn’t going to appear before chapter 31…

Have you ever eaten something so spicy that you’d suck a cock just to get something to drink? The chili that’s been sitting in my refrigerator was like that. Basically, my husband emptied about seven jars of cayenne into a stockpot and added crushed mice to taste. Oh, and mushrooms. We like mushrooms in our chili. In cases like this, we end up with enough food to fill a cheerleader’s well-greased asshole, and we eat it for days. I tend to pull the pot out, set it on the counter, and leave it there while I eat a bowl of sulfur and tiny bones, just in case I want seconds. My husband is convinced that I’m going to get food poisoning.

But I won’t, and neither will you. Food that has been out of the fridge for a while is not lethal. Neither is carpet grit, dust mites or tap water. You all have this idea that “impurities” and “toxins” and “free-radicals” are some kind of microscopic army of ninjas just waiting to deplete your body’s whatever-the-fuck. Half the bacteria you douse your hands in alcohol to kill don’t give a shit about you and your neuroses.

The advent of the vacuum cleaner began the process of shrinking mankind’s collective balls. All of a sudden, it isn’t enough to take the rugs out and hit them with a stick until they look less gray. Now you’ve got to get rid of all the “dirt you can’t see.” We used to give dishes a few swipes with cold water and lye soap and call it good. Now we’re in a state of complete panic if we see “water spots” on a glass. Our nuts are now so small that they’ve migrated into the pelvis, allowing the sack to hang in folds and form the wrinkled twat that has replaced our once virile danglers.

Human beings are animals, and animals are built to live in filth. You know what we’d be doing in the wild? Sleeping in the dirt, motherfucker! With ants! We’d be eating raw meat with hair on it and drinking from green, gelatinous pools. (Think your sister’s panties with less stagnant trucker cum.) A wild human would shit on the ground and let his hair grow into actual dreads and never wash his hands or pits. Basically the most disgusting homeless guy ever + the Canadian wilderness. But you know what? One swing of his healthy, red-blooded crotch conkers and a rabid bear with a 30-foot conjoined shark wouldn’t stand a chance.

If you want huge balls, you’ve got to start eating everything off the floor. And no 5-second rule bullshit. It needs to sit there until it’s stuck in the carpet fibers. Refuse all vaccines and sit directly on every toilet seat you can find. When someone sneezes, run over immediately and rub your face all over him. And if he’s already thrown the coveted mucous out in a tissue, retrieve it and lick up the manliness. You’ll need that hearty immune system when you’re trolling for gutter whores with your enormous bag hanging out the back window.

I am tired. I knew signing up for NaNoWriMo wouldn’t be a cake walk, but as I enter week three, I’m finding the push to keep writing is getting harder and harder.

I am lucky. I have a select group of cheerleaders who are encouraging me. It’s making a huge difference. I don’t know what I would do without them. They’re great. They tell me my writing is good even when I know it’s drivel, they tell me they love the plot and the characters, and they remind me that it’s a challenge I can conquer as long as I take it a day at a time.

I am tired, but I will not let my cheerleaders down. I felt kind of silly asking for people to cheer me on when I first started, but now I am very glad I did. I’m the reason I started, but they’re the reason I’m going to finish. Thank you!

Midway through  my daughter’s gymnastics career I was waiting with the other moms for her practice to finish. One of the mothers asked me a question about the upcoming meet. Before I could answer, her 6 year old son piped up, “Mom, what are you asking her for? You said she never knows anything!” Gasp. The other moms stopped talking. Some were stiffling a giggle. But who could blame him? or her? It was true.

When my daughter was trying out for another team – a much more competitive team with coaches from Russia and practices 4 hours a day, 4-5 days a week in a gym one hour from our home – another mother at the try-out introduced herself to me. We chatted for a while and then she asked, “Does she have her kip?” I asked, “What’s a kip?” She smiled with satisfaction -  convinced my daughter would never make it. Then she asked me to point her out. I did. They were on the uneven bars and evidently, my daughter had her kip. I watched the mom’s face fall.

I used to be a competitive swimmer. And then I coached competitive swimming. I’ve dealt with many a pushy parent. Armchair coaches, we called them. The ones that saw a few races on television during the Olympics, but never swam a day in their life and thought they knew everything. I prayed that my daughter would chose a sport that wasn’t competitive swimming. I wanted her to choose a sport I knew absolutely nothing about.

And she did.

I was thrilled. And she turned out to be pretty good. Then, at the top of her game, she quit.

Off to another sport I knew nothing about. Rowing. I love the water but I knew absolutely nothing of this sport. And the kind of boats? I just had to look up on Wikipedia what kind she raced. K-1 and K-2. But it was so much fun to watch.

And then she discovered a sport I didn’t even know was a sport. Competitive Cheerleading. I had to do everything in my power to keep a poker face when she told me she wanted to try out for the squad. Cheerleading? A sport? Whoop-de-doo. Learn a few chants. Let someone stand on your shoulders. Do a few cartwheels. That’s hardly a sport.

Boy, was I in for an education!

Not only is it a sport, it’s a very dangerous sport. Sixty-five percent of all catastrophic injuries to young women in high school involves cheerleading. You better believe once I heard this statistic I educated myself about this sport. Back in my day doing a cartwheel or a round-off got you on the squad. Now? At my daughter’s school it’s required that you have a standing back tuck. On top of that you need: round off back handspring front layout, round off back handspring full, strength training, dance skills and the ability to stunt. I was thrilled that when she made the squad her position was a base. I did not want her to be a flyer (that’s the one that gets tossed 30 feet in the air.) When we went for her physical her doctor asked what position she was. When I expressed my relief that she wasn’t a flyer the doctor smiled and told me she sees more injuries from the other positions (broken noses, broken clavicles, dislocated elbows and shoulders). What has she gotten into?

Before I signed anything (and you better believe there are release forms for this sport!) I spoke with the coach. She’s a former gymnast and competitive cheerleader, certified, trained and educated. They go to another gym for tumbling where again, they are certified. I breathed a tiny sigh of relief. She’s in her third year and so far, so good.

But beyond me checking out the safety of her coaches, gym and squad I still know very little about the sport. We just returned from the state championships and they made it to finals. A couple of the moms and I were sitting with the coaches at lunch after sectionals. I asked a question. Evidently, a bit of a dumb question. I saw those knowing glances all over again between the moms as the head coach patiently answered me.

I will never be one of those moms that sits in the stands with her pen and schedule, making notes on the other squads, counting how many fell, how many stepped off the mat, how many didn’t complete a stunt. I have no idea how to rank them, how many points are deducted for a fall or what the judges are looking for. I had to ask my daughter a few moments ago to tell me the names of the things she does during her tumbling run. She gave me that look, too.

But that’s ok. I will be my daughter’s cheerleader. I will watch diligently from the stands with eyes on her praying she doesn’t get hurt. I still know less than half of the girl’s names on her squad. I know she gets annoyed whenever I ask, “Now, who is Chelsea?” for the 50th time. But that’s ok. I’m there for her. I’m so proud of the hard work she puts into this sport. It’s a team sport that still showcases her amazing gymnastics ability. Her work ethic is fantastic. She performs in front of thousands of people. She is a consistent athlete. And she loves her teammates. I can’t ask for anything more.

Well today I’m home. That’s a first for cheerleading. Maybe just varsity.

Today we had a competition camp, that I missed. My mom was missing and I had no ride. You all should know what that means. I’m an alternative for competition team :/

This is my eye’s is the worst thing that could possibly happen. I’ve worked my ass off to get just here and look where I ended up. I almost got my flip. My tumbling coach said I should have it by competition, but I’M NOT EVEN IN IT.

I’ve only been in tumbling about 5 times and already I almost have my flip.

I’ve gotten punched, kicked, people have fallen on my neck, grabbed my face. I do this because I love it. I’ve missed out on so many things that make me a “teenager” to end up here

One thing to learn. Dedication. I will kill myself to try and get back on competition team. KILL.

Morti per vaccino A-H1N1. Le notizie si accavallano in rete. Due casi in Germania, precedentemente a fine Ottobre qualche riferimento in articoli in lingua inglese venne fatto per i casi di morte sospetta avvenuti in Svezia in persone che avevano appena fatto il vaccino anti influenza A.
Il Codacons, dopo la diffida all’Aifa e al Ministero della Salute, rende noto il caso di un medico radiologo che si e’ sottoposto a vaccinazione come da prassi, subendo imprevisti effetti collaterali: dopo circa 15 minuti dall’iniezione del vaccino si sarebbe verificata una reazione avversa, sfociata in crisi lipotimica (svenimento senza perdita di coscienza) e febbre alta fino a 39 gradi, durata 2 giorni, reazioni documentate dal Pronto soccorso dell’ospedale, dal medico di famiglia e dall’infermiera che ha iniettato il vaccino. Il viceministro Fazio sostiene che l’antidoto è sicuro e che farà vaccinare i suoi figli, appena se ne presenterà l’occasione. Strano visto che hanno 19 e 21 anni e possono decidere per loro conto se vaccinarsi o meno. Dire che li farà vaccinare ha la sua utilita propagandistica, diciamo. Il viceministro dovrebbe invece preoccuparsi per il mancanto coordinamento fra Stato-Regioni e fra Regioni, viste le discrepanze e le difformità nella distribuzione del vaccino che si sono verificate. La procura di Wuppertal, città del Reno-Westfalia, nella parte ovest della Germania, hanno già ordinato l’autopsia per determinare se il decesso del 46enne sia stato provocato dalla stessa dose dell’antifluenzale

  • Al Codacons giungono le prime segnalazioni da parte di soggetti che – dopo la somministrazione del prodotto – denunciano reazioni fisiche negative

  • l’Associazione Italiana di Oncologia Medica (AIOM) assume una posizione chiara: il vaccino contro l’influenza A puo’ essere somministrato anche ai pazienti oncologici in trattamento con chemioterapia, perché vanno considerati tra le categorie a rischio di complicanze delle vie respiratorie concomitanti alla sindrome influenzale

  • Giuseppe Mele, presidente della Federazione italiana medici pediatri (Fimp), consiglia di vaccinare i bambini contro lo pneumococco, per evitare la sovrapposizione di polmoniti alla nuova influenza A. "Il l vaccino eptavalente disponibile, l’unico con una specifica indicazione rivolta alla prevenzione della polmonite, è sicuro ed efficace, anche contro altre gravi malattie, come meningiti e otiti"

  • Dallo scoppio della pandemia di influenza A/h1n1 le vittime hanno superato quota 6.250. Lo ha reso noto l’Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità (Oms), sottolineando però che la diffusione del virus sembra rallentare. Dall’8 novembre i decessi sono stati 179 contro i 224 dei sette giorni precedenti. Un netto crollo rispetto ai 700 morti dell’ultima settimana di ottobre.

  • Nonostante ci sia stata una nuova vittima positiva al virus, la malattia in Campania, la regione finora più colpita dall’A/h1n1, rallenta. Non aumentano infatti i ricoveri di adulti e bambini.

  • mentre 147.000 persone sono già state vaccinate, il sottosegretario Fazio ricorda che "la percentuale delle vittime per influenza A è lo 0,0048%" dei malati contro lo 0,2% dei decessi per la normale influenza. Va considerato – inoltre – che essendo la percentuale delle vittime calcolata, considerando i casi clinici segnalati al sistema di sorveglianza, poiché questi sono molto probabilmente sottostimati, il valore potrebbe essere addirittura inferiore alla stima sopra riportata".

  • eppure altri 10.000.000 di dosi di vaccino sono in arrivo per fine Dicembre mentre nei primi mesi del 2010 il totale di dosi che il governo distribuirà alle regioni salirà a 24.000.000, il 40% della popolazione italiana

  • Qualcosa non torna? Le informazioni che ci giungono dai media sono contraddittorie tra loro?

  • Pare ormai chiaro che l’influenza AH1N1 è un’influenza forse un po’ più aggressiva della normale stagionale ma, ormai anche i dati forniti dal ministero non possono negarlo, dalla mortalità decisamente bassa

  • Ogni anno in Italia muoiono più di 8000 persone per patologie collegate alla "banale" influenza stagionale, la maggior parte sono persone oltre i 65 anni, ma ben 2000 decedono pur non essendo in età a rischio

  • E’ di qualche giorno fa, infatti, la notizia secondo la quale in Svezia quattro infermiere sarebbero morte dopo aver assunto il vaccino

  • Dice il tabloid svedese Expressen: "In ottemperamento alle disposizioni vigenti i decessi sono stati segnalati all’autorità sanitaria incaricata della farmacovigilanza, poiché la campagna di vaccinazione contro l’influenza suina in Svezia è già iniziata da due settimane. Non sono stati evidenziati collegamenti tra questi decessi ed il vaccino"

  • si moltiplicano i ricoveri avvenuti a causa delle forti reazioni allergiche seguite alla vaccinazione

  • I primi sintomi che si denunciano sono febbre, dolori muscolari, mal di stomaco, mal di testa, vertigini, stanchezza seguiti da forti dolori in sede di iniezione e da un senso di costrizione toracica che causa dispnea, per non parlare di una immuno-depressione generale

  • Il Belfast Telegraph del 27 Ottobre riporta la notizia di un ragazzo diversamente abile che è finito in ospedale poche ore dopo aver assunto il vaccino, mentre negli stati Uniti è una cheerleader a sviluppare la distonia – un disordine del movimento muscolare – appena 10 giorni dopo aver fatto il vaccino – [Affermazione non corretta: la cheerleader, si vaccinò ad agosto e fece il vaccino per l'influenza stagionale]
    

  • sono molte, infine, le testimonianze di donne incinte che una volta assunto il vaccino hanno avuto complicanze se non addirittura aborti spontanei.

La storia della Cheerleader che è diventata disabile, affetta da dystonia una rara malattia neurologica, dopo essersi vaccinata per l’influenza stagionale – e non per quella suina, come erroneamente riportato in alcuni articolo.

  • Vaccino H1N1, Report morti dalla Svezia: quattro morti per il vaccino H1N1 – che è il vaccino contro l’influenza suina morti, per chi non è in sintonia con i cambiamenti nella nomenclatura – si dice che abbiano colpito i pazienti in Svezia. Le relazioni locali che due pazienti anziani di recente morti pochi giorni dopo aver ricevuto il vaccino contro l’influenza suina.   • a Napoli, si segnala il caso di un’infermiera vaccinata che ha avuto una reazione allergica. La donna è ricoverata in osservazione al Cardarelli. Il primario della Rianimazione, Luigi Occhiochiuso conferma che ha fatto il vaccino giovedì e sabato è praticamente collassata con sudorazione fredda, forte abbassamento della temperatura. Allo stato non vi è certezza del rapporto diretto tra vaccino e sintomi, ma è chiaro che il dubbio è forte. Ci sarebbe anche un altro caso analogo al Santobono (l’ospedale pediatrico dove è morta la bimba di Pompei) ma non si hanno notizie più precise

Ormai è da un bel po’ che seguo Heroes, devo dire anche con una bella pausa lunga perchè ultimamente era un po’ “scagato”…ma poi non ho resistito e sono ritornata a seguirlo, in contemporanea con l’America adesso

E tra tutte le abilità che hanno i vari personaggi, devo dire che ce n’è una ultimamente che mi ha particolarmente colpito per la sua originalità…e perchè è romanticissima

Dopo l’abilità di poter volare di Nathan Petrelli, la potente elettricità di Elle, o il potere di assorbire la paura, di diventare acqua e ghiaccio, di rigenerarsi come la cheerleader, di leggere nel pensiero come Parkamn, che sono bene o male abilità che tutti sognano di avere, o che comunque sono nell’immaginario collettivo, sono apparse ultimamente altre abilità simpatiche…

Come ad esempio quella della bella Lydia (che vedete qui sotto mentre Sylar mi tradisce con lei ) di creare tatuaggi premonitori (or something like that), o quella del “padrone del circo” di gestire l’inchiostro come vediamo nella puntata Ink…

Ma c’ quella della nuova ragazza entrata nel cast da poco, Emma, che mi ha lasciata senza parole.

Emma è sorda, non sente nulla e riesce a parlare a stento, ma anche se non riesce a sentire con le orecchie…riesce a “vedere” i suoni.

Ogni suono per lei ha una curvatura morbida e un colore nello spazio che la circonda, per cui un applauso, come qui, prende tutte le sfumature del celeste, e la avvolge in questa nuvola colorata.

Bellissimo
