Cuando se viaja suele ser para constatar que lo que imaginamos merece existir. Para que no exista la lógica decepción al llegar a nuestros desconocidos destinos favoritos, preparamos durante cierto tiempo nuestra mítica de rutas y visitas, y ahí es donde el verdadero viaje empieza. Después sólo hay que tomar un vehículo locomotor cualquiera, y viajar para constatar qué pizca de verdad hay en todo aquello que hemos imaginado.

El Chelsea Hotel es esa mítica elevada al cubo. Mencionado en la obra de muchos artistas, y visitado después por artistas que querían conocer a esos otros artistas que lo cantaban, y sabían que el Chelsea a esas alturas no era un mal sitio para hacerlo.

Allí debieron estar también, pues, cientos de wannabes haciendo lo mejor y lo peor para estar en primera plana del mundo cool de la bohemia, o al menos del prometido desenfreno orgiástico, o al menos, lo mínimo, de los escándalos relacionados con la droga. Todo ello añadido a que la caja que contiene al Chelsea es la mismísima caja mítica de Manhattan, que además está dentro de la caja mítica de Nueva York. Y ahí tenemos al Chelsea metido en el imposible fregado de ofrecer correspondencia entre deseo y realidad al viajero.

La realidad, entonces, puede pasar por que el Chelsea sea un sitio agradable, que aprovecha bien su pasado para atraer a unos cuantos curiosos por ésta ruta poco frecuentada en los paseos turísticos que atraviesan la Gran Manzana. Medias frases con un simpático recepcionista, dar una vuelta por el legendario hall… se hace difícil imaginar que realmente ocurrió allí todo aquello que cuentan las crónicas. Principalmente porque lo que ocurrió (dicen) allí es lo mismo que está ocurriendo en cualquier lugar del mundo en éste mismo momento. Y eso debería ser todo.

¿Le quita ésto encanto a la visita? ni un ápice. Por eso éste artículo se escribe en ese mismo hotel, y pasa a formar parte de esa otra mítica, la que se pretende desmitificadora de cualquier lugar o hecho. Poner un pie en el hall del Chelsea da significado a la imposibilidad de desmitificar nuestros deseos, por muy estúpidos que sean. La razón es simple: los necesitamos, para que el Chelsea no sea un hotel más. O para que nuestra vida merezca desarrollarse en esa habitación en la que nuestros muebles encajan como una semilla en la tierra húmeda.

german born christa päffgen but better known as nico was a model, actress, singer-songwriter and warhol superstar. singer in the velvet underground and and member of warhol’s factory along with her experimental films like chelsea girls launched her to super stardom in the sixties. her song these days is my number one all time favorite song from her album chelsea girls. also if you haven’t listened to the velvet underground go listen now because you won’t regret it.

Han skrev den till Judy Collins, det är i alla fall vad hon själv säger i det kärleksbrev som följde med 1993 års Just Like A Woman: Judy Collins Sings Dylan. Men nu var ju Bob Dylan som han var, både med sina låtar och med sina kvinnor. Ibland blev det som det blev. Följaktligen gav han också bort den till Nico, som lade den på sitt underbara debutalbum Chelsea Girl (1967).

Själv var Bob Dylan inte överdrivet imponerad av I’ll Keep It With Mine, som kom till under en sällsynt produktiv junikväll 1964. Kontrollrummet var fyllt av vänner och en massa högljudda barn, men han spelade under den här kvällen ändå in All I Really Want To Do, Chimes Of Freedom, To Ramona, My Back Pages och ytterligare 14 sånger.

Sången dök till slut upp på Dylans Biograph (1985) och även i en annan, ofärdig tappning, på The Bootleg Series Vol 1-3. Dylans egen förklaring till varför den inte fick rum på Another Side Of Bob Dylan lät så här:

The stuff usually doesn’t get onto a record for one of two reasons. Either there’s too much on the record, and you can’t get the song on it … or else you just don’t think the song is good enough. A lot of stuff I’ve left off of my records I just haven’t felt has been good -enough. Or maybe it didn’t sound like a record to me I never even recorded ‘I’ll Keep It With Mine’, you know … but if people like it, the like it.

It’s deep into fall and the big tree next door is turning.

 It puts you in a certain time and place if you take the simple approach.

1967. New York City. Post Velvet Underground. A handful of young musicians flowed through her life at this time. She had asked Tim Buckley to play guitar for her act. He was toting around an enormous ego and said no. His friend Jackson Brown traveled from the rural splendor and sunshine of Orange County/LA and hit the big city.

Brown spent some quality time with Nico. You can here it on “Chelsea Girl” which opens with his song The Fairest of the Seasons.

I am prejudiced in favor of the Taurus but Nico’s most interesting lover and the one that conjures the most enticing visuals in my mind is James Osterberg (Iggy Pop). 

I think I remember reading that she cooked him brown rice and veggies. Can you see it?

I must confess that if I were Nico I would have to sample the fine young James Osterberg, too. I would cook him brown rice and vegetables but I might throw in some chicken. We’d probably need protein for energy. I’d give him whatever he liked best. Jackson Browne was cute but Iggy/James was busting out all over.

I found a couple of cool things that I couldn’t resist buying even though I recently pledged to start stuffing my mattress with cash for the impending tough times.

I never go to the mall. There is rarely anything there that I find attractive and even when there is I can rarely bring myself to pay the retail price for it.

I went last week to do the question of the week for my news factory employer. After finding the requisite amount of strangers on whom I popped the question I went into a new store called Torrid. It seems to be a Hot Topic for women with more abundant pulchritude and a more punky attitude.

I found black tights with silver glitter skulls! Nutty, irresistable and they were on sale!

In this same shop I also found a couple of cool scarves and a shirt with cute skulls. Here it is with a white scarf I dyed in the great marooning. I hesitated on the shirt. Thinking I could live without it. But then it just wouldn’t let me go. It danced in my head and I went back a few days later and plopped down the cash.

La Velvet Underground es uno de los grupos mas importantes en mi vida, en lo personal hay un antes y un después en la música pop/rock a partir de ellos, ocupan en mi corazón y mis oídos el mismo lugar que Los Rolling Stones, Los Beatles, Los Doors, o Los Who.
Lou Reed y John Cale eran los protagonistas principales de la banda, sus carreras solistas demostraron lo enorme de su genialidad, pero el famoso disco de la bananita tiene otra protagonista fundamental y esa es Nico, el mito femenino mas bestia del rock junto a Janis Joplin.
Ya desde el título del primer disco de la velvet queda claro su lugar en la banda, cuenta la leyenda que Lou Reed no la soportaba y Andy Warhol (que ponía el nombre, o sea, la pasta) la impuso en la banda. No entra en mi cabeza que canciones como “Femme Fatale” o “All tomorrow parties” fueran interpretadas por otra voz. Ese inglés bestial y despojado de acento solo podía salir de la boca de este ángel alemán (o húngaro, no esta claro donde nació), esa voz seca, ausente y bestial es la indicada para esas letras y esa música.
Su belleza era tan particular como el timbre de su voz, su primer disco solista post Velvet Underground se llamo “Chelsea Girl” y en su momento no tuvo mucho reconocimiento, para mi es uno de sus mejores trabajos, contiene canciones bellísimas como “These Days” o “The Fairest of Seasons”( Wes Anderson uso estas dos canciones en su película “The Royal Tenembaums”), tuvo otros trabajos solistas muy interesantes como “The Marble Index”, “The End” y otro de mis discos favoritos “Camera Obscura”, un trabajo totalmente precursor para su época, lo mejor de este disco es una versión del clásico “My Funny Valentine” que puede partir el corazón mas duro en mil pedazos.
Lamentablemente Nico nos abandono en el año 1988, sufrió un derrame cerebral mientras paseaba en bicicleta en Ibiza, sus cenizas fueron sepultadas junto con las de su madre en una ceremonia íntima en la que sonaban sus canciones de fondo, una bella despedida.
Hace unos años editaron en CD un concierto grabado en el año 1972 en el teatro Bataclan de Paris donde se reunieron Lou Reed, John Cale y Nico 6 años después de la grabación del mítico álbum de la Velvet, este disco es una de mis joyas mas preciadas.
Los dejo con un fragmento de este concierto, espero que sea de vuestro agrado y sirva como presentación para aquellos que no conocían la obra de esta tremenda y fundamental artista.
