The above is not a setlist as much as this year’s most exciting megamix – and there’s a phrase I haven’t bandied around with complete abandon since 2004. Previously, I mentioned something of writing about my favourite remixes of the year and although perhaps this isn’t the ’something’ I was expecting to write, c’est la vie. This year has been fucking awful for good remixes. I could only find three that met my flaky standards. One was the Stuart Price remix of Paparazzi which I overplayed anyway and don’t really enjoy any more, and doesn’t exist much outside of the middle eight anyway. Another was the Does It Offend You, Yeah? remix of Uprising that sometimes is better than the album version – a claim which is completely reliant on my mood at any given moment in time. But I’m a complete whore for DIOY,Y remixes anyway, so it’s a completely predictable anticlimax. The third was the Filthy Dukes mix of To Lose My Life that I thought was fun for a few weeks but it dulled quickly. Thinking about it, I only really liked it because it sounded like Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, White Lies and Bimbo Jones in one big melting pot, then I realised that they all do their own thing independently and it sounds better than this track. And with that thought, this brief flirtation was o-v-a-h.

I was reminiscing about the Teignmouth weekend a couple of days ago and realised that Zane Lowe’s warm up set for the evening was, not only one of the best openers I’ve seen for a band, but it fit the bill for resuscitating this dismal commentary. I’ve seen Zane DJ in a couple of other venues before, but he didn’t leave any kind of impression on me. This clicked. He actually did two half hour sets sandwiched between some really happening local bands, and the second was superior to the first, which is above. Rather annoyingly, the audio of the second never surfaced, and I don’t remember much of it other than an amazing remix of Bonkers, so I can’t even describe it. It was amazing. But back to the first set – Zane made me dance. I never dance. Ever. I’ve never understood the appeal behind DJing, or how some people are into it in the same way that I’m into peanut butter M&Ms (you’re pressing play on a track someone else created? Inspirational.) but I have a new found appreciation for it all now. Kind of.

I loved the way it was put together – though I will say that the airhorns all the way through got me excited for a play of the Freemasons remix of Ring The Alarm, which Zane obviously did not play: it was so not the audience for the Freemasons (myself aside, and I would have danced for everyone else there if it had come on),  but I loved all of the thought which had gone into each track and how it would work best in the mix. It was a great blend of genres, alongside music from today and music from ye olden days as well that provided an education for some of the younger audience members there (“Isn’t this from that Fatman Scoop song?”). It created an air of context for the set Muse went on to play, both musically and emotionally, and that’s a beautiful thing.

I would have taken System of a Down out though. I hate that song. Flobots would have worked just as well there.

Nice work Zane Looooooooooooooooooowe. I’m on board.

I have a new opportunity on the horizon and probably have the chance to work downtown in a bar that constantly plays live music with my roommate. Some might call it destiny while others will blame it on luck but in any case it’s exciting.  It makes you think about what you’re doing with your life when you have a change in routine so maybe that’s what everyone else needs. Here’s some five pieces of music to facilitate some changes.

Audioslave: Set it off – The “supergroup” has come and gone but at least they left us with a handful of fantastic track before they left. This song should have been a single and I think it’s one of the best things they recorded [that and "Original Fire] I’d add both to your catalog now. Thank Tom Morello while you’re at it, because everything he touched with an [electric] guitar turns to pure gold.

Cage The Elephant: Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked - Ok, so most of their songs sound the same. That just means find the best one and roll with it. That’s exactly what these newcomers have done. I enjoyed their album but it does get a little repetitive at times.

Chemical Brothers: Galvanize - How can you go wrong with Q-Tip rapping over one of the greatest electronic acts of all time. This song won them two Grammys for a reason. You probably have heard clips from an old Budweiser commercial but the song is so much better.

David Gahan: Kingdom [Digitalism Remix] – I can’t find the re-mix on YouTube but most torrents should have it. It’s a great song in either condition but become epic after its tweaking

Genesis: I Can’t Dance - Yes, even Genesis had some noteworthy songs that should survive the test of time. I am not a big Phil Collins fan but he shines on this track. Kills it in fact.

Just a quick one this weekend as I’m far too busy (what an arse I sound) so here are 5 top musical based things to do in Manchester this weekend in no particular order:

1) The Chemical Brothers – Sankey’s; Tonight

I dont think I really need to hype this one up, it rather speaks for itself, the Chems are here to celebrate Bugged Out’s 15th year birthday, and all I can say is it is going to be big, very big, morbidly obese big.

2) La Roux and Zane Lowe – Warehouse Project; Saturday Night

Again not exactly a gig I have to hype up a tremendous amount La Roux is huge and Zane, our favourite antipodean Radio 1 DJ is always worth seeing, and I dont think you need a particular excuse to go to a Warehouse night this year, the general consensus id that this year it has been easily the best. Also one of my favourite bands at the moment Ou Est La Swimming Pool are also playing. My friend saw Tiga a few weeks back and he could barely speak for about 3 days. Go and see, please

3) Contort Yourself - The Roadhouse; Saturday Night

One of Manchester’s own, Contort Yourself are DJ’s who provide in their own words, “The best 8-bit-breaks, dance floor classics, punishing house and cosmic pop”. They are truly tremendous if you go to the Roadhouse I can guarantee you will have a good night* so check out their myspace and go along

4) Breakestra – Band On The Wall; Saturday Night

Breakestra are an LA based 8-piece funk and soul band who bring it hard, I’ve heard very good things about them, people have mentioned the names James Brown and Parliament to me, and it doesnt get much more funky than that. If you havent been to the BOTW since it was done up then this would be a good an excuse as any it looks great, and if you want to be funked silly (yes I did just say that) then head along

5) Datarock - Moho; Sunday Night

Datarock are awesome = fact. They may be crazy Norwegians with a list of band members that dwarfs the Polyphonic Spree but theyre blend of electro is right up my street, I cannot think of a better way of spending a Sunday night than absorbing some Datarock magic.

Spike Jonze desperta emoções em ‘Where the wild things are’

Filme é baseado no livro ‘Onde vivem os monstros’, de Maurice Sendak.

Spike Jonze, um dos cineastas mais inovadores da atualidade de Hollywood, retorna à direção sete anos depois do último trabalho com “Where the wild things are”, uma fantasia sobre a infância que aflora emoções.

O filme, que estreia nesta sexta-feira (16) nos Estados Unidos, é baseado no livro “Onde vivem os monstros”, um clássico da literatura infantil criado por Maurice Sendak em 1963 sobre Max, um menino perspicaz que se sente incompreendido e que, após uma discussão com sua mãe, foge em busca de um lugar mágico criado em sua imaginação.

“Ali é onde vivem os monstros referidos no título, que na realidade são umas criaturas que representam as emoções, selvagens e imprevisíveis, que todos temos em nosso interior”, segundo explicou Jonze em um encontro com a imprensa em Los Angeles, na Califórnia.

As criaturas buscam um líder que os guie e proclamam Max seu rei, que promete criar um ambiente para que todos sejam felizes, embora em breve descubra que seu trabalho não será fácil e que as relações com os demais habitantes tornam-se mais complicadas do que imaginava.

“Maurice (Sendak) me disse que não me preocupasse porque cada um pode opinar sobre a adaptação, me encorajou para que fizesse o filme que eu queria, minha visão sobre a história, e para isso só me pediu que fosse honesto com o livro”, lembrou Jonze, de 40 anos, co-roteirista do filme junto com Dave Eggers.

O universo literário de “Onde vivem os monstros” encerra ao fim de 50 páginas, mas a imaginação que despertam os desenhos de Sendak são as grandes vertentes do livro, que integra a lista dos mais vendidos de todos os tempos.

“Não quis acrescentar nada que não estivesse no livro, mas tentei descobrir quem é Max e quem são as criaturas selvagens, para mim são as emoções e isso cedeu espaço para que começasse a escrever os personagens”, manifestou Jonze, autor de títulos como “Being John Malkovich” (Quero ser John Malkovich, 1999) e “Adaptation” (Adaptação, 2002), seu longa-metragem anterior.

Na versão original do filme é possível escutar as vozes de James Gandolfini, Catherine O’Hara, Paul Dano e Forest Whitaker, que dublaram as criaturas, feitas artesanalmente -”ficou rude, real”, apontou Jonze – com a incorporação de efeitos digitais para dar expressão aos rostos.

O estúdio Warner Bros que esperava um produto final mais conciso acabou atrasando a estreia do filme em mais de um ano para polir os detalhes da produção, cujo orçamento foi de US$ 80 milhões.

“No princípio, o estúdio se surpreendeu com o material recebido. Eles esperavam algo mais mágico e fantasioso, mas este não é um conto tradicional”, afirmou o cineasta, quem considera ter realizado um filme sobre a infância contada de forma realista.

Segundo Jonze não foi preciso mudar nada – “fiz o que eu queria” – e Warner Bros deu o sinal verde ao trabalho do diretor de célebres vídeos musicais protagonizados por R.E.M. e Chemical Brothers.

Uma das decisões mais complicadas foi a escolha do protagonista, papel dado a Max Records, de 12 anos. “Ele é o grande trunfo do filme”, disse Jonze, quem se mostrou orgulhoso também com a trilha sonora, obra de Karen O, líder da banda Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

“Ela é uma de minhas artistas favoritas”, admitiu o diretor americano. “É como uma menina que luta pela liberdade e expressa seus sentimentos e considero que sua música é o coração do filme”, acrescentou Jonze, um apaixonado da música pop desde criança.

“Queria uma música que lembrasse a de Brian Wilson, John Lennon, Paul McCartney e David Bowie”, comentou o cineasta. “Quando criança conectava intuitivamente com meus amigos e sentia que podia identificar-me 100% com suas canções”, acrescentou.

Catherine Keener, a única atriz protagonista de carne e osso no filme, certificou o duro trabalho que teve que enfrentar Jonze para adaptar a obra literária e defendeu suas decisões.

“Tem muitíssimas ideias e uma criatividade inesgotável, portanto leva tempo articular todo isso”, elogiou a intérprete. “O que faz com que este filme vá muito além do que o estúdio esperava”, concluiu.

Basement Jaxx return with another out of this world genre-defying single.

This is why Basement Jaxx possess such a strong following within their career to date, they step outside of the generic format to create something unique, again with surprise features, almost as if they recruit the versatile to form a super-team battling through genres, as strange and farfetched as it sounds, it is exactly that, Basement Jaxx like the Chemical Brothers have come through creating a range of diverse material, therefore they are allowed to pass through genres with ease, baring in mind that they do it well.

Scars is a smartly crafted production with its sample embedded within an array of synths, horns and vocals, Meleka leads the vocals and adds her presence perfectly over the beat, Kelis adds another element of strength, emphasising Meleka’s voice whilst ensuring that the song does not become too repetetive and eventually boring, the addition of recent Number 1 selling artist Chipmunk is as powerful as their previous collaboration with Dizzee Rascal, it almost depicts Chipmunk’s position within the industry and he does not dissapoint, he keeps his lyrical content balanced between his raw street edge and his smooth..more mainstream suited tone, “I’ll Kiss You Then You Wake Up, Don’t Want You To Meet Your Maker, and You Don’t Beleive In Fairy Tales..Well Truly I’m Gonna Make Ya”, he also provides the male balance within the vocal arrangement.

Overall, Scars is a more dark sounding effort in comparisons to previous releases, however in time this will gain the recognition it deserves.

Acaban de pasar las celebraciones del día de muertos, en algunas partes se celebra de alguna forma, en algunas otras partes se celebra de otra manera, en algunos lugares se celebra Hallowen, hace un año en nippix lo celebramos con una semana temática, este año simplemente no nos organizamos, síndrome de tiempos complicados… más allá de haber caído en este lapsus melodramático, la idea de hacer este post me vino precisamente pensando en que canciones son mis preferidas para cuando llegue el momento de rendir cuentas con el altísimo (cualquiera que sea su concepción del mismo) llegue.

Si hubiera un fin del mundo tipo “War of worlds”, “Independence day” o “Evangelion” y mientras este montado en un mecha gigante matando marcianos esta es la rola que me gustaría escuchar:

la canción se llama Where do you go to my lovely y es tocada por el indú Peter Sarstedt, sin más razón porque en mi cabeza ese escenario encuentra esta canción como la canción perfecta.

Otra canción es la de Jackie, que originalmente es de la artista irlandesa Sinéad O’Connor, pero que Placebo la toca con especial sentimiento:

En un tono más alegre, otra canción que habla acerca de la muerte es “The Golden path” de los Chemical Brothers, el video es bastante alegre a pesar de que si analizamos la letra, esta no lo es tanto:

Vera Lynn, canta “We’ll meet again” que Stanley Kubrick utiliza al final de la película “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb”, habla de dos personas que se volverán a ver, sin saber donde ni cuando, pero cuando se vuelvan a ver será en un día soleado y habrá felicidad. Mucho de como nos pintan la vida, después de pasar.. el túnel de luz.

Johnny Cash en su disco “American IV The: man comes around” es una apología de canciones que bien podrían haber sido su epitafio, poco tiempo despues de haberlo publicado, el cantante de Country murío, este disco fue un regalo póstumo de este autor.

Con una fuerza melodramática, Cash interpretó un cover a NIN: Hurt, el video esta plagado de imagenes extraídas de su vida, combinadas con un Johnny Cash añejo, listo para lo que venga.

Simon & Garfunkel tienen varias canciones que han salido en varias películas, una de ellas es, precisamente, una de las mejores películas que se estrenaron en México este año: Watchmen.

The sound of silence, aunque no es una canción que hable acerca de muerte, la visión que se lee en las líricas es de un ambiente onírico, surrealista e hiperrealista, se dice que el sueño es como morir un poco, por lo que los terrenos del sueño, no le son extraños al tanatos.

Por último, una canción del grupo inglés Radiohead: “last flowers”, desde el título la imagen nos remite a las últimas flores que alguien reciba, dentro de la canción el coro final dice:

Lo que se relacióna directamente con el tunel de luz que algunas personas que han regresado de la muerte, afirman haber visto, sin más que decir…

I find it very interesting to compare an original sampled record with another one that has sampled it. Most people have virtually no interest in that which is a shame cause it shows the musical influences of a band and can therefore increase your musical knowledge and culture. Galvanize, from Chemical brothers’s last album, Push the button, made me discover Najat Aâtabou, a Moroccan singer, songwriter and composer. Although she is perhaps best known for her song “Hadi Kedba Bayna” (“Just Tell Me The Truth”) which was sampled by the Chemical Brothers on their song Galvanize, as a song writer and singer she told the story of the modern Moroccan woman and tried to improve feminism in Morocco. “Hedi Kedba Bayna” is from 1987 and was extremely popular throughout the whole Arab world, Spain and France. Hedi Kedba Bayna is about a woman whose husband is cheating on her. The title literally means “This lie is obvious”. The Chemical Brothers are a well known English duo of electronic music with an slight hip-hop and funky edge. Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons were also pioneers of the big beat electronic dance genre in the 1990s. Galvanize, which features Q-Tip on vocals, was the first single to be taken from Push the Button, and premiered exclusively on Itunes. The single has won the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording in February 2006.
