One night, a long, long time ago, in a dirty hotel room full of empty booze bottles and used condoms, David Bowie, Jon Bon Jovi, and Cher had a threesome – or ménage à trois if you prefer- and pooped out Adam Lambert.

I’ll leave it up to you as to whether or not that’s a good thing. I’ve listened to For Your Entertainment multiple times now, and I’m quite honestly just feeling ambivalent about the whole thing. I am a poor soul who is forced by people in my life to watch American Idol every year. Last season, Lambert was the only thing that got me through that show. He was my sparkly, glittery, makeup-y shining star. And I have to say that I’m disappointed. This whole album is just so, “meh”, and no matter how much I listen to it, I can’t get a feeling of who Adam Lambert is, or what his music’s about. The album is disorganized and doesn’t seem to flow.  It feels like he’s just a tool for the music of multiple other people. A player for a mixtape type of thing. There are a few bright moments in the album, songs that I like to classify as “gay anthem songs” – songs that I expect to be remixed and blaring when I go out to the gay clubs. These include Fever, Sleepwalker, and If I Had You.  I’ll shake my bootie along to these songs when I’m out on Saturday night, but in my head I’ll be thinking about how disappointed I am.

Adam, for your next record, stick to the anthems, buddy!

les femmes ne sont pas comme nous. Elles ne savent pas lire une carte, elles poussent des petits cris aigus, elles tirent les cheveux, elles ont les pieds froids.
Bref, une femme, en gros, ça sert pas à grand chose (pour voyager, se bastonner, se réchauffer, au moins).

Mais il y a une chose qui est pas mal chez les femmes, au moins certaines d’entre elles, c’est la voix. Pas juste pour dire “à table” ou “j’ai plus rien à me mettre”, simplement pour induire une sieste ou envelopper un groove. Parce que la femme de qualité a un organe (ce qui n’en fait pas tout à fait un homme pour autant).
Izia par exemple a, malgré son jeune âge, un organe qui arrive à tirer des larmes de bonheur à pas mal de testosteronés de mes amis. Y’en a d’autres, hein, mais il faut avouer qu’on a un peu perdu en niveau général depuis que ces demoiselles oublient leur qualités premières : douceur, profondeur, variété (comme on dit dans les films spécialisés).
C’était mieux avant en fait, à l’époque où les femmes étaient des Divas. Pas en se faisant désirer, en s’offrant body and soul à la musique, en vibrant d’Amour transi, tragique ou trahi.

#161 – Cher – “Believe” – (1998)

I could not be less of a Cher fan, but when this song came out, I didn’t know who Cher was and I was easily won over by the ridiculous electronic sound of this song. Plus, it was everywhere (and if you didn’t like it when it came out, it was probably because you thought too highly of yourself).

So W just dropped news that Joanna Newsom has a proper follow-up to Ys and the subsequent Joanna Newsom and the Ys Street Band EP, the particulars to which twentyfourbit.com elaborated, all of which I know about thanks to GRCA’s Emily Marks.

Now, I’m not sure why it’s taking her so long to make another full-length, which I’m assuming Drag City is releasing. Some might speculate that her hiatus might be due to her relationship with SNL’s Andy Samberg. And while I have no problem with giving Samberg a good feminist hard time, I’m not entirely sure if her absence can be attributed to playing house. With recent appearances in trendy fashion magazines like W, much as she did earlier in her career with publications like PAPER, I think it might have something to do with playing dress-up.

Yikes! I realize those last two sentences might have infantilized the singer, something choruses of music critics do any time they call her voice “child-like.” What I mean is that Newsom has been mingling in the fashion world. Perhaps it’s no surprise that a long-haired, full-lipped, leggy white lady recording artist can get designers to take notice. However, I find it particularly interesting who she’s syncing up with, how this might help construct her image, and what all this might suggest about the commodification of indie. Because she’s not just putting on Armani. She’s friends with Rodarte, waxing pretentious about the collaborative process and wearing their designs to in-the-know, downtown fêtes.

Sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy, who created a label honoring their mother’s maiden name, Rodarte, have made quite a splash in the fashion world and on the red carpet over the past few years. They seem like cool ladies with whom I’d definitely want to watch some movies. Yet I’m still on the fence about their decidely avant-garde design aesthetic. I almost like a lot of it, but it gets way too drapey and twee at times — particularly when factoring in the cost.

Natalie Portman and Reese Witherspoon’s dresses for the 2009 Oscars were vivid shades of pink and blue, but the knotty bodice patterns and woozy detailing made me a bit nauseous. Similar situation with the dress Tilda Swinton wore for a premiere of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button – loved the color palette, wanted to rip off the sleeves. And in theory, I like the Rodarte sweater Kristen Stewart wore in last January’s Teen Vogue, but in actual practice, I have a hunch that I could find some moth-eaten angora free of charge if I just brave the family attic.

That said, I like that Rodarte work with retailers like the Gap and Target to make their clothes more accessible and affordable. And they have made some killer, coveted items that I’d snap up if I had the money.

But Newsom and Rodarte seems an interesting match. Though musicians pairing up with designers is nothing new (see also: Cher and Bob Mackie, Madonna and Jean-Paul Gaultier, Courtney Love and Christina Aguilera representing Versace, M.I.A. representing Marc Jacobs), something seems pretty perfect with the alignment here. Perhaps with the three ladies’ talk about collaborative processes, we’ll get to see a Newsom-designed collection, as we did with Chloë Sevigny’s 2008 collection for Opening Ceremony.

This pairing might be read alongside what commercial ventures Newsom has entertained. In an era that has seen many independent artists rely upon advertising and television shows to get their music heard, Newsom’s music has been featured in several places. Often she has elected that her music be used in documentary work. However, The Milk-Eyed Mender’s “Sprout and the Bean” was featured in Victoria’s Secret’s Dream Angels ad campaign. Note that her voice is not heard in this spot.

Or it could be that a dress is just a dress. Which is fine too. But while I’m excited about hearing Newsom’s new album, I’ll have two labels on my mind when it comes out: Drag City and Rodarte.

Shock is fun, shock rock is like something that existed, for example, like in the 70’s, Alice Cooper…David Bowie, you had artists that liked to push the envelope and that’s what made them so fresh … Prince for example, wore a**less chaps one year…I think that surprise is part of entertainment. I think that it keeps people watching its fun, it makes you laugh and it should be that way. And if it made you uncomfortable, maybe I’m not for you. Well, I feel the need to write two posts today, in light of the controversy over Adam Lambert’s shock rock performance at the AMA’s.  I’m sitting here reading comments on MTV where some woman says that he has no right to do that where her 4 and 6 year old can see it.  What self-respecting mother lets her 4 and 6 year up be awake at that hour, much less watch the AMA awards?   This was the last performance of the evening, waaaaaay past most 4 and 6 year old’s bed times.  I believe that’s why they put it last, so it would not be viewed by young children.  As for him kissing a man, get over it.  Don’t you know that there are still a lot of gay sports figures out there, and quite a few on the “down low”?  Do you care?  No, not as long as they are busting heads on Sunday afternoons.

Well, we all expected the conservative right to blast him, and true to form, they did.  What shocks me is the boomers.  I’m a boomer, and I grew up with Alice Cooper, David Bowie, Prince and The Village People.  Talk about controversial…take six gay guys dressed up in costume and prance them around the stage singing about how much fun it is to stay at the Y.M.C.A!

Now, Alice Cooper was one of the nicest men that has ever walked this earth, and he answered his critics by saying that it was entertainment, nothing more.  If you can get anymore shocking than a man cutting baby dolls heads off on stage, please let me know what it is.

Why on earth is my generation, the “free love”, Woodstock, acid dropping, communal living, hippie generation now so damned judgmental?  I actually loved Adam’s performance.  It was raw, animalistic, and real.  You can pretend all day that S&M doesn’t exist, but that won’t make it go away.  He’s not the first person to do bondage on stage, not even the first male.  David Bowie did bondage before Adam Lambert was born.  He even pranced around the stage in a very feminine shirt that barely covered his crotch, which was good, because he had no pants on!

Who can forget Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” video?  Burning crosses, stigmata, rape, interrracial sex with a priest.  I thought the controversy would never stop!

Then there was Cher, barely dressed straddling the cannon in the “If I Could Turn Back Time” video.

So Adam Lambert reminded us all of the seamier side of sex.  He’s not the first, and he won’t be the last.  All the people mentioned above were superstars, and a couple of them still are.  Adam is following in the footsteps of the greats…those who weren’t afraid to push the limits, to express themselves in their own way, and change the music world in the process.

So to all my fellow boomers…get the collective sticks out of your asses and remember when you used to know how to have fun.  Or go buy some Susan Boyle music.  No sexual content there.

To Adam, Bravo!  Can’t wait to see what you do next!

Många som gör en könskorrigering vill helst gömma eller glömma det liv de hade innan, för att det är för jobbigt att tänka på. De flesta är på något sätt tvungna att förhålla sig till det ändå, och för en del är det helt enkelt omöjligt att komma undan. Chaz Bono är en av dem. Chaz mamma heter nämligen Cher, och pappa Sonny Bono, och han har levt i strålkastarljuset hela livet. För fjorton år sedan kom han ut som lesbisk, och i somras som transman.

I en intervju i Good Morning America berättar han om hur han kom till insikt om att han var kille: Precis som många andra transkillar kände han sig rätt hemma i lesbiska kretsar, men samtidigt inte.

“-När jag var tretton-fjorton var jag rätt säker på att jag drogs till tjejer. Så: Jag föll för tjejer, jag är en tjej, så jag antar att jag är lesbisk.

- Men det är det enkla svaret, eller hur? För vilket kön man dras till…

- Vilket kön man dras till har inget att göra med ens könsidentitet. Många tycker att det är väldigt förvirrande, men det är två helt olika saker. Det ena är hur du ser på dig själv och vem du känner dig som, och det andra är vilka du dras till”

Det är en riktigt bra intervju. Jag är grymt imponerad av reportern som lyckas hantera frågan på ett respektfullt sätt, utan alltför tydlig freakshow-stämpel – och ännu mer av Chaz, som ger bra svar.

Nej, han är inte rädd längre. Han var det förut, men nu lever han det liv han alltid drömt om. Nej, han tycker inte att hans könskorrigering går att se som ett politiskt ställningstagande. Han har kämpat hårt för det, men om han är öppen med det kan han bana väg för andra. Han är fortfarande HBT-aktivist, men nu lutar han mer åt T än åt H.

Och så det som redan blivit något slags bevingat uttryck, som jag i och för sig inte är helt säker på om jag själv skriver under på:

“Gender is between your ears, not between your legs”

Könet sitter mellan öronen, inte mellan benen.

För Chaz är det en könskorrigering, men för omvärlden är det ett könsbyte. Människor som vant sig vid att tänka på honom som “hon” och [tjejnamn] och “lesbisk” får nu lära om och tänka “han”, “Chaz” och “heterosexuell”. Då är det såklart lättare för de som inte sorterar människor så mycket, utan bara behöver komma ihåg hans namnbyte.

Jag beundrar Chaz för att han vågar vara sig själv, och för att han inte – som vissa andra kända personer som det skvallras om – flyr undan och gömmer sig någonstans. Jag är säker på att Chaz inte kommer att ångra sin transition – och jag hoppas att han inte kommer att ångra att han valde att göra det offentligt.

As a regular member of Virgin Active costing around £75 a month it was nice to discover that my new gym was a bargainous £1.93. Then I walked in and understood why.  Thankfully I’ve had my tetanus jab and have the ifitness application on my iPod Touch which can plan a new routine on demand based on the equipment available although I must admit it was struggling.

It’s hard to keep up the protein diet and maintain ‘the bod’ here in Dharamsala but I’ve now bought a great device to put into a pot and hard boil eggs although the first lot of eggs I bought were lost as a gang of venomous dogs attacked me on my way back the hotel (I washed my jeans).  The only stones to throw were next to the edge of the cliff and it was pitch black so I desperately fumbled in my pocket and came upon the eggs which I lobbed in their general direction, it did the trick and the dogs scarpered like a set of Oxford graduates defeated by the local yobs.  Why are there so many evil dogs of death here? 

Talking of food, my latest English lesson was about ‘The Restaurant’.  On discovering halfway through that most of my students had never been to a restaurant before I decided that we should have a fieldtrip.  This level of spontaneity would be impossible in the UK. I would usually have to submit the idea to the Senior Leadership Team (if I could find them), complete a ‘risk assessment’, wait for the permission slips to come back from Parents, Carers or Guardians, collect the mobile numbers from all the students in case one went wandering and make sure it didn’t clash with any other teachers’ ego’s.  Although, I was always very selective of those who would have the pleasure of going out of the school gates with me otherwise I may have been tempted to nudge a couple of kids on to the tracks as the tube arrived.

although I spotted a couple of Brits and a German.  They have shaved their heads, denounced the evils of capitalism and donned the red robes of joy.   I spotted a gay one this morning who ran into the cafe and screamed to his ‘girlfriend’, ‘Hi bitch, I can’t stop because Lobsang is talking at the temple TTYL’, it was as though Cher had announced her last concert would be in Dharamsala and Stephen Gately had come back from the dead but she smiled and clapped with joy as every good faghag should.

I have taken on a couple of extra monks in the evening for conversation classes.  It’s good fun and I swear that if I believed in reincarnation one of them would have been my Granddad in his past life, he looks and speaks like him and grabs my hand in exactly the same way and being a monk he has no hair either.  Many Tibetans leave Tibet to see the Dalai Lama and get a better education but then are not allowed to go back to ‘Tibet’ or fear being imprisoned by the Chinese.  The Chinese have imposed the Chinese curriculum in Tibet which is killing their language and culture.

Today my class asked me to explain Barak Obama’s recent speech in China.  What he said was put up on the wall in the town (see right).  Maybe the West doesn’t want to upset China and maybe if Obama said the US did not recognise that Tibet was part of China it would anger the Chinese government and they would fear the Dalai Lama even more and never engage in talks but it’s a shame that China has become so powerful and have gotten away with taking another country, killing millions of Tibetans and destroying thousands of monasteries… he says, drinking tea from his ‘Free Tibet’ mug.

• Yeah Yeah Yeah…I know Children in Need is a great cause and I admire what they achieve…but FFS….The cast from Hollyoaks Queen Tribute was dire…and Terry Wogan gets more attrocious by the year…Hes only outshone on the dithery stakes by Brucie on Strictly…It really is time for an overall…Im going to switch channels before we are treated to the annual spectacle of BBC news readers making a complete arse of themselves…I will pledge a tenner if they dont do it next year.

Cher’s ’son’ Chaz speaks out about sex change and reveals: ‘I always felt like one of the boys’

Cher’s eldest child Chaz Bono has told of how having gender treatment to change from a woman into a man is ‘the best decision I’ve ever made.’ The 40-year-old writer and activist, born the daughter of Cher and former husband Sonny Bono, said he was at last living the life he had always wanted. Eight months into his transformation, and having changed his name from Chastity to Chaz, he appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America show.

‘I feel so much more comfortable than I’ve ever been,’ he said. ‘I’ve felt male as far back as I can remember. Life is short and life is precious. This is who I am. I need to finally be who I am.’ Eleven years ago he came out as a lesbian. Now he has had gender-reassignment surgery and hormone therapy to become a man.

He explained that the entire  transition from female to male will take about four to five years. So far, his breasts have been removed and he has received hormone treatments to deepen his voice. And to his delight, he now has to shave his face. ‘This was a very difficult decision to make, but it was the best decision I’ve ever made,’ he explained. But he added: ‘To me, gender is between your ears, not between your legs.’ Chaz, who lives with his girlfriend of four years, Jennifer Elia, said his mother Cher had vowed to support his decision to become a man. His father, Sonny, who had a string of hits and TV shows in the 1960s and 70s with Cher before divorcing in 1975, died in a skiing accident in 1998. Cher also has a son Elijah Blue, from her brief marriage to rock singer Gregg Allman.

FIVE RULES FOR MEN TO FOLLOW TO A HAPPY LIFE:

FREEDOM

This is the kind of story you need when it seems like the world is spiraling out of control.. Not many people get a picture of this proud bird snuggled up next to them …Freedom and I have been together 10 years this summer. She came in as a baby in 1998 with two broken wings. Her left wing doesn’t open all the way even after surgery, it was broken in 4 places.   She’s my baby.
When Freedom came in she could not stand and both wings were broken. She was emaciated and covered in lice. We made the decision to give her a chance at life, so I took her to the vets office.   From then on, I was always around her. We had her in a huge dog carrier with the top off,  and it was loaded up with shredded newspaper for her to lay in.  I used to sit and talk to her, urging her to live, to fight; and she would lay there looking at me with those big brown eyes. We also had to tube feed her for
weeks.
This went on for 4-6 weeks, and by then she still couldn’t stand. It got to the point where the decision was made to euthanize her if she couldn’t stand in a week. You know you don’t want to cross that line between torture and rehab, and it looked like death was winning.   She was going to be put down that Friday, and I was supposed to come in on that Thursday afternoon. I didn’t want to go to the center that Thursday, because I couldn’t bear the thought of her being euthanized;  but I went anyway, and when I walked in everyone was grinning from ear to ear.  I went
immediately back to her cage; and there she was, standing on her own, a big beautiful eagle.  She was ready to live.  I was just about in tears by then.   That was a very good day.
We knew she could never fly,  so the director asked me to glove train her. I got her used to the glove, and then to jesses,  and we started doing education programs for schools in western  Washington  .  We wound up in the newspapers, radio (believe it or not) and some TV.   Miracle Pets even did a show about us.
In the spring of 2000,  I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.  I had stage 3, which is not good (one major organ plus everywhere), so I wound up doing 8 months of chemo.   Lost the hair – the whole bit.   I missed a lot of work. When I felt good enough,   I would go to Sarvey and take Freedom out for walks. Freedom would also come to me in my dreams and help me fight the cancer. This happened time and time again.
Fast forward to November 2000, the day after Thanksgiving.   I went in for my last checkup. I was told that if the cancer was not all gone after 8 rounds of chemo, then my last option was a stem cell transplant. So the first thing I did was get up to Sarvey and take the big girl out for a walk. It was misty and cold. I went to her flight and jessed her up, and we went out front to the top of the hill.   I hadn’t said a word to Freedom, but somehow she knew. She looked at me and wrapped both her wings around me to where I could feel them pressing in on my back  (I was engulfed in eagle wings), and she touched my nose with her beak and stared into my eyes, and we just stood there like that for I don’t know how long.  That was a magic moment.  We have been soul mates ever since she came in.  This is a very special bird.
On a side note:   I have had people who were sick come up to us when we are out, and Freedom has some kind of hold on them.   I once had a guy who was terminal come up to us and I let him hold her.  His knees just about buckled and he swore he could feel her power coarse through his body. I have so many stories like that.
I never forget the honor I have of being so close to such a magnificent spirit as Freedom.

But he added: ‘To me, gender is between your ears, not between your legs.’ Chaz, who lives with his girlfriend of four years, Jennifer Elia, said his mother Cher had vowed to support his decision to become a man. His father, Sonny, who had a string of hits and TV shows in the 1960s and 70s with Cher before divorcing in 1975, died in a skiing accident in 1998. 1. It’s important to have a woman, who helps at home, who cooks from time to time, cleans up and has a job.

2. It’s important to have a woman, who can make you laugh.

3. It’s important to have a woman, who you can trust and who doesn’t lie to you.

4. It’s important to have a woman, who is good in bed and who likes to be with you.

5. It’s very, very important that these four women do not know each other.

FREEDOM

This is the kind of story you need when it seems like the world is spiraling out of control.. Not many people get a picture of this proud bird snuggled up next to them …Freedom and I have been together 10 years this summer. She came in as a baby in 1998 with two broken wings. Her left wing doesn’t open all the way even after surgery, it was broken in 4 places.   She’s my baby.
When Freedom came in she could not stand and both wings were broken. She was emaciated and covered in lice. We made the decision to give her a chance at life, so I took her to the vets office.   From then on, I was always around her. We had her in a huge dog carrier with the top off,  and it was loaded up with shredded newspaper for her to lay in.  I used to sit and talk to her, urging her to live, to fight; and she would lay there looking at me with those big brown eyes. We also had to tube feed her for
weeks.
This went on for 4-6 weeks, and by then she still couldn’t stand. It got to the point where the decision was made to euthanize her if she couldn’t stand in a week. You know you don’t want to cross that line between torture and rehab, and it looked like death was winning.   She was going to be put down that Friday, and I was supposed to come in on that Thursday afternoon. I didn’t want to go to the center that Thursday, because I couldn’t bear the thought of her being euthanized;  but I went anyway, and when I walked in everyone was grinning from ear to ear.  I went
immediately back to her cage; and there she was, standing on her own, a big beautiful eagle.  She was ready to live.  I was just about in tears by then.   That was a very good day.
We knew she could never fly,  so the director asked me to glove train her. I got her used to the glove, and then to jesses,  and we started doing education programs for schools in western  Washington  .  We wound up in the newspapers, radio (believe it or not) and some TV.   Miracle Pets even did a show about us.
In the spring of 2000,  I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.  I had stage 3, which is not good (one major organ plus everywhere), so I wound up doing 8 months of chemo.   Lost the hair – the whole bit.   I missed a lot of work. When I felt good enough,   I would go to Sarvey and take Freedom out for walks. Freedom would also come to me in my dreams and help me fight the cancer. This happened time and time again.
Fast forward to November 2000, the day after Thanksgiving.   I went in for my last checkup. I was told that if the cancer was not all gone after 8 rounds of chemo, then my last option was a stem cell transplant.
