Sunday River’s New Campaign

Newry, ME — With every new ski season comes a new campaign to generate interest in the sport and its respected resorts. This year Sunday River will promote their resort with an intricately designed image on their websites, clothing, stickers, etc. Sunday River wanted to stay away from the current fad of bright and loud patterns that are reminiscent of the eighties, and go in a totally new direction. The resort wanted their new campaign to be prominently featured amongst complex, intricate designs created by the Native Americans. So, Sunday River went out and hired a group of Native American artisans, the Aryan Nation.

“Listen,” begins a distressed Sunday River executive, “we totally fucked up and we know it. We wanted to hire some Native Americans, but who the hell knows even knows an actual Native American person? We needed to find out how to locate some, so we went online to search them. Originally, we all agreed that Cherokees were pretty badass and that we should contact them, but every time we Googled them, we kept getting results for websites about jeeps. After that didn’t work, we then typed in ‘true Americans’, and that’s how we found the Aryan Nation’s website. We just assumed that ‘true Americans’ meant ‘Native Americans’, and you’ve got to admit that Aryan Nation does sound like a Native American reservation. Honestly, we didn’t know that we were hiring ignorant assholes. We just thought that we were getting some Indians.”

On the behalf of the Aryan Nation, Roger Whiteback, chief propaganda designer, states his brotherhood’s side of the story. “First of all, me and my partner, Stan Whiteface, were super-duper excited to do the Sunday River project. What they did was send us a rough sketch of what they wanted. Their original sketch was this picture of a weird image that had about four arms extended from the center, and within that image were the words ‘We Support White Powder’. So, I went to work on the background image first. I couldn’t make out what the hell that thing was supposed to be, but when I started to squint at it, it made sense. It was just a poorly drawn swastika. Well, I beefed it up a bit, and made it into one of the best swastikas I’ve ever designed. They got mad about that because later on, after we finished the project, they told me it was actually a snowflake and not a swastika. Then there was the incident with their slogan in the forefront of their sketch: ‘We Support White Powder’. They got all pissed when I took the letter ‘d’ out of ‘Powder’. Seriously? They hired the Aryan Nation, of course we’re gonna think ‘We Support White Powder’ is a typo, ya know?”

After experiencing a rough economic patch, Boyne has admitted that they’re unable to financially support a new campaign, and if they want to continue to promote their ski resort, then the Aryan’s finished product will have to suffice.

A Boyne spokesperson further explains their company’s stance. “We’re in the middle of a financial dilemma here and a racial controversy, but we’re just going to have to lean on the old proverb that ‘All publicity is good publicity’. Yes we accidentally employed the Aryan Nation, but it was for a very brief moment in time. We’re willing to admit that we had a brief exchange, but we don’t want people to think we’ve been rubbing elbows so hard with the Aryans that their lynching arms are bruised.”

To help put Sunday River back into the good graces of its loyal guests, and also distance themselves from white supremacy, Boyne employed a Jewish publicist to put a positive spin on the “We Support White Power” campaign, and prove that if a Jew could work for Sunday River, then their logo can’t possibly stem back to the days of the Nazis.

“Alright,” begins the Jewish publicist, Sal Steinberg, finally, after fifteens minutes of pleading for someone to turn the heat up at Sunday River’s press conference. “You’ll notice the words ‘We Support White Powder’ in the middle of this here sticker. Last winter was pretty tough financially, and there wasn’t enough money to put into a second campaign, but we did have enough money for a case of Whiteout. If you put your face a few inches away you’ll clearly notice that each sticker has squeezed in a Whiteout letter ‘d’ to make the word ‘Powder’. This makes each one unique and a collector’s item. Now, let’s talk about that background symbol. Since when did a windmill-esque image, on an axis, with four arms that eventually bend at a ninety degree angle, automatically mean it’s a swastika? We just thought it’d be fun to stray away from the traditional idea that a snowflake is a fancy, doily-looking object. We just took a simple, stripped down image to use instead. Everyone uses the fancy snowflake image, and as everyone knows, no two snowflakes are the same. So, we believe a snowflake like ours could definitely exist.” He’s right, it did exist. In East Germany.

Later that night, a waitress at the Matterhorn Ski Bar overheard the Jewish publicist, in a nasally voice, saying the following (right before he left a meager eight percent tip), “I’m so nauseous right now. I can’t believe I said those things for money. I feel like one of those prostitutes, you know? The ones with the ungodly clothing and diseases. I hate myself. I’m going to have nightmares for weeks now about Moses chasing me with a pitchfork. My poor mother would never forgive me for getting involved with those Nazi lovers. I just want to go back to my condo in Miami.”

After dumping the body of the young woman who overheard the publicist, Boyne and Sunday River executives were hoping that the explanation of the logo would help the controversy blow over, but certain groups took notice. One of those groups, the Ku Klux Klan, overheard the conference, and one of their leaders had this to say, “As you’ve probably guessed, we are ecstatic that Sunday River surfaced their true feelings and beliefs. We finally have a safe place to go on a skiing vacation now. A place where we’ll be accepted in our hood and robes. It’s not easy going out in public when you dress like us. You have no idea how painful it is to be constantly judged and ostracized everywhere you go, just because of who you are. It doesn’t matter now though, because in Bethel, they tell it like it is. White Power all the way! Hell, they even support the Confederacy. I mean, they must support the Confederacy if they put a statue of a faggy Union soldier, on Bethel’s Main St., smack-dab between a homo flower store and a God damn taco shop! I love it! Reminds me of the good ol’ days in Montgomery, Alabama.”

After a private meeting, executives of Boyne and Sunday River held another press conference. “We have finally come up with a way to prove that we aren’t racist, and that we don’t support White Power,” exclaims a representative of Sunday River, who regularly quotes the movie Blazing Saddles. “Our superiors at Boyne Realty are currently installing a border length wall to stop racist people like the Aryan Nation and the KKK from entering Maine. We originally had the idea to build the wall years ago to keep out Massholes, and now it’s finally about to come to fruition. Aside from those three groups, other people wishing to come to Bethel are still more than welcome and may enter from New Hampshire, because Canada will obviously be completely walled off. However, due to the wall being several miles wide, it was incidentally built on top of Gorham, New Hampshire, so people will instead have to go through the wall’s border patrol located in Berlin. Now, I know some people are worried, but as long as people have their papers in order, they’ll be fine. Everyone’s really friendly at the Berlin Wall.”

Beware of santas bearing bad news.

If you aren’t one of the 3% of shoppers who are actually done with the Christmas shopaganza, welcome to the club. My friend, you need a strategy. Timing is everything, and what you’re in the market for should determine where you go. Here are some things to consider when drawing up the Black Friday shopping game plan.

1. Timing. Stores like Wal-Mart can be a goldmine if you plan carefully. Here’s what you need to know. First, If you want to buy electronics and video game door busters, get out of the city. Things like that will be in less demand in remote areas near Atlanta. The reverse is true if you’re shopping for hunting paraphernalia and camouflage fashions. Also, you should probably know that Wal-Mart opens on Thanksgiving at 6 am and stays open through black Friday, but you can’t grab the goodies until the official time when they go on sale. However, there’s no rule that you can’t go there early and skulk around the best deal on your list. Last year, a Wal-Mart employee was trampled to death in a shopping rush. They are trying to be more organized this year to keep everybody safe.

Strategy: Grab specific bargains and get out fast so you can hit the next store. Some stores will have door busters scattered through the day. Plan well and you can hit one after the other.

2. Buddy up. Grab the girlfriends, find a shopping area with a lot of stores, and split up. Everybody has a list of bargains in an assigned store and money to cover the items you want. If it’s not a door buster, pass.

Strategy: Work in teams to get the limited time bargains while they’re hot.

3. Shop online. Amazon.com is joining in the festive spirit of the blue light special with short-time sales for some virtual door buster deals.

Strategy: Shop early, set up your account before the time comes in order to work fast.

4. Map it out. Make sure you know where you’re going an how to get there. Many stores will open at 5 AM, and some will stagger bargains.

Strategy: Decide on the route beforehand to hit as many stores as possible when they open.

5. Do your homework. I like Black Friday Ads to pull together all the ads and show me the best deals, but if you’re less inclined to go digital, just spread the newspaper ads on the kitchen table and circle what you want most, then plan your timing and map accordingly.

Strategy: Make a list. Check it twice.

6. Beware of sticky fingers. Don’t turn your back on your cart if you manage to snag something good. Black Friday shopping is the closest modern moms come to guerilla warfare and some will stop at nothing, including looting other people’s carts, to grab a bargain on a blu-ray, so assume you’re being circled by wolves and act accordingly.

Strategy: Guard your stuff. Women on a mission can be vicious.

Above all, shop well, shop safe, and shop healthy. I’ll be right out there with you. In spirit, anyway, I’m more of an online shopper than a 4 AM Black Friday shopping guerrilla.

Do you know your ancestory? Many of us are of mixed blood. It seems like when I talk to most people,

Do you know your ancestory? Many of us are of mixed blood. It seems like when I talk to most people, especially younger people, they really don’t know. I really enjoy meeting a full blood of any race. It fascinates me in a way. No branches, no confusion or conflict in my mind. I am Chinese. I am Swedish. I am Cree. I was at a spiritual retreat this fall and the speaker asked how many generations back people could name their Grandfathers. Most could only go to their Grandfather. One or two cold name Great Grandfather. My former Father in law can trace his Swedish heritage and that of his wife’s so far back it would make your head spin !. I think we lose alot when we don’t know that. Native peoples keep their relatives alive in constant stories, about when he or she did this or that. Handing down beliefs and traditions. Handing down mental and verbal images of that person. Western culture is more inclined to say ” well, he was born here in about 1831 and I think dies about 1888 somewhere out west”. That’s about all you can get. Maybe new technology will help change that. To think that my Grandchildren, Great and Great great Grandchildren can have really good video, pictures, my words in song and blogs to learn about me is fascinating. It’s not that I’m so important or have so much to say, but that we are in the same line. A family continuum. To know where you are going it helps to know where you came from.

When I was a child the only book I can ever remember reading was a book on Geronimo. For reasons now known to me, I understand why I had a connection. My Maternal side is English/ Chezkloslovakian and my Paternal side is English, and Native American, both Cherokee and Muscogee Creek. I had heard stuff through the years about Creek blood, but it took until I was 21 or so to drag it out of my Grandmother. For you see, when she was growing up people didn’t want to claim their Native heritage. It was considered a very negative thing. I don’t know how they hid it because her family started and ran the Chavers-Kennedy Indian School in Wildfork, Al.

I think we can tap into our bloods, maybe each of us has DNA characteristics that are closer to one heritage than the next. What do you think about your lineage? Is it important to you? Does it make any difference? Does it ground you or do you take pride in any of it? I have a lot of relatives that just don’t care. A lot that still, here in 2009, dismiss Native blood, despite legal documents proving otherwise. If I wasn’t into this and then tomorrow I woke up and said I’m going to connect with my heritage more, it wouldn’t change my outward life, but I believe it would ground me more.

Knowing my past helps me know where to go. To me it honors those that came before. It fascinates me. They were just as important as current generations. They lived and struggled. Loved and lost. They were excited and filled with hope for the young ones and saddened when they buried the elders. So the circles keep going, generations come and go, love and life keep right on happening with God on the middle of it all. You may look English, Native American, or Chinese, but you have a line and that line goes forward as well as into the past. I urge you to check that out. It may surprise you and it may shed some light on why you are the way you are.

The narrator of this novel, Will Thomas, is in his 90’s and has spent most of his life living among the Cherokee. Timeframe is about mid 1800’s, before, during, and after the Civil War as well as before, during, and after the Cherokee removal. This is quite the saga. Frazier’s writing is very detailed, and at times I loved the imagery, but sometimes I wanted the story to move on a bit more quickly. I think I liked the first third of the novel best: Will’s teenage years when his family essentially sells him into the service of a trading post owner where he is required to work for 7 years. He ends up buying the post, expanding his business to a string of posts and then numerous other businesses and land and spending the rest of his life among the Cherokee as friend, leader, and lawyer. He is essentially one of them but is never of them. Threaded throughout the story, and what in some ways holds the narrative together, is Will’s relationship with Claire whom he meets at age 12 but cannot marry because he is white and she is part Cherokee. While the story is fiction, I enjoyed its historical aspects, especially the relationship between the Cherokee Nation and America and the various lifestyles and prosperity (or lack thereof) among the Cherokee. This is a good–but long–read. (fiction)

I wanted to clarify a point neglected in my last (already rambling!) post here, but didn’t get

I wanted to clarify a point neglected in my last (already rambling!) post here, but didn’t get a chance to write more over the weekend.

When I mentioned the ever-popular corncob pipe depiction, I wasn’t suggesting that everybody in southern Appalachia is Native–under either my own criteria nor some people’s more rigid official “blood quantum” based ones. There are an awful lot of us “invisible” folks around all over the Southeastern US, and especially in the mountains, for various historical reasons. There are also a lot of people whose ancestors were mostly European (Scottish and/or Irish, particularly), along with a good number of people who identify as Black.

But, as Dave Peyton pointed out:

Those first settlers who came with the early westward migration made the mountain valleys their home for reasons still unknown. Some claim they were escaping the authorities on the populated East Coasts. Some, including Dr. Simpkins, claim that the Appalachian settlers were primarily Scotch-Irish who left their homeland in Northern Ireland during the 18th Century to escape British oppression.

But the heritage of the culture is disputed. While many adhere to the Scotch-Irish theory, others believe Appalachia was settled by outcasts from England’s big cities, particularly London…

No one disputes, however, that the Appalachian people developed a folk culture that permeated the mountains. The culture tended to absorb those who moved into Appalachia. Whether they were Eastern Europeans, Spaniards or Italians, if they lived there long enough to have children, their children were mountain people.

The fact that the mountain culture was able to absorb other cultures with little or no change itself indicates just how strong the culture was. It wasn’t until the third decade of the 20th Century that the culture was brought to its knees by mass culture.

This was written, incidentally, the year I was born; I’d take the condescending death knell with more than a little salt. (Not to mention the isolation and oddly static culture notions, politically convenient as they are.) The new barrage of forced assimilation has not been easy to deal with, but we hillbillies aten’t dead yet.

There’s popular perception, which begins when Europeans started running inland away from the reach of the authorities. All the research I’ve done suggests that this drove a lot of settlement; some geographical distance particularly appealed to people who were or had been forced laborers (75% of Virginia’s population at times) and those migrants included one heck of a lot of Africans and enslaved coastal Native people. That also accounted for a lot of the early Scots, Irish, and people who’d been “recruited” or flat-out abducted out of London and other British cities. A lot of other people of similar ethnic backgrounds decided to join them. This is hardly controversial–except among those who would whitewash over just how North American colonial economies worked, and focus exclusively on the later wave of Ulster Scots/”Scotch-Irish”.

At the same time, lots of other Native people needed to move inland, to get away from land loss, slavery, and genocide. Not surprising, really.

Please bear with me; this mini-lesson in history is relevant. (Not just in the general sense of learning from history, though that too!)

What the popular perception neglects is that people were already living there–again, this is politically convenient, for obvious reasons. People who’d already been incorporating other Native refugees as needed; look at the Haudenosaunee pattern further north, which is better documented. Further south, we got more documentary genocide. The easy assimilation Dave Peyton notes did not start with the much-vaunted “Scotch-Irish”.

That worked more smoothly at first, with trickles of incomers, a lot of whom must have been really glad to live with or near people who treated them with respect.* That’s why the area I’m from is so full of Indian-identified people with Gaelic surnames, like me. Later on, there were larger groups who mostly cooperated with the neighbors, and mostly got assimilated after a generation or two. (Including a couple of new Irishmen my family picked up not long before the Famine.) That only held up to a point, until we got large groups of incomers with no interest whatsoever in getting along with the people already living there.

It’s also good to bear in mind that the people who were already living there took a very different view of “racial” identity. If you behaved decently and tried to get along with other people, you’d have aligned yourself with the locals. “Whether they were Eastern Europeans, Spaniards or Italians, if they lived there long enough to have children, their children were mountain people.” They would at least pick up the surrounding culture, even if they didn’t marry into or formally become members of one of the surrounding Nations. This approach was based on cultural considerations, pragmatism, and consensus-based decision making, rather than on constructed colonial notions of race and nationality. That pattern does continue to great extent, and there is still a lot of confusion around the very different approaches.

In short, no matter how many or how few actual Indian ancestors most of these folks have by now–and almost everybody in WV, for example, knows they have some–they’ve been tarred by long association. Too many of their people “went native”, and their cultures really do not agree with the dominant one. They’re subject to the same stereotypes as Native people, only revamped as White Trash. As has come up many times on Mingo-L, it’s a lot easier to change the kind of house you live in and the sort of clothes you wear than it is to change the way you look at the world.

When I was at Virginia Tech, I did an Appalachian Studies elective out of vague interest (and hopes of an easy grade). That course was Appalachian Communities. One of the books in particular was a big wakeup call, explicitly pointing out some cultural differences–which explained a lot of things I’d run into dealing with people from the dominant culture. (I can’t remember the title, but that was in 1994!) Forget politically convenient stereotypes. The two I clearly remember are extremely high levels of egalitarianism, and men actually wanting–and feeling free–to spend time with their kids and grandkids, and nieces and nephews. I’d naively assumed that most of the people I came into contact with were operating under similarly egalitarian ideals, and kept getting shocked. Besides assuming that everybody–especially little girls!–went around with their older male relatives half the time, without thoughts of pedophilia dancing in other people’s heads. Talk about self-fulfilling prophecies. :-| That approach to child care (and “unschooling”) implies and leads to less rigid gender roles, besides leading to fewer hostile environments for the women those Little Princesses will become. (I was amazed the first time I got treated like crap and stared at in a hardware store. Seriously.) As much as some people may want to call these cultural patterns “Jacksonian”**, I can see some far more likely sources.

This kind of egalitarian approach to life does not always go over well, to put it mildly. Especially when the person or people in question don’t accept your authority, not to mention your views of why they should do what you say–and give you their stuff.

The specifics may have changed a bit, but reactions and ideological differences remain very similar. So does the fact that some people have resources that other people want to take. Some recorded comments the man Powhatan offered are still uncomfortably apt:

What will it availe you to take that by force you may quickly have by love, or to destroy them that provide you food. What can you get by warre, when we can hide our provisions and fly to the woods? whereby you must famish by wronging us your friends. And why are you thus jealous of our loves seeing us unarmed, and both doe, and are willing still to feede you, with that you cannot get but by our labours? Thinke you I am so simple, not to know it is better to eate good meate, lye well, and sleepe quietly with my women and children, laugh and be merry with you, have copper, hatchets, or what I want being your friend: then be forced to flie from all, to lie cold in the woods, feede upon Acornes, rootes, and such trash

In the 19th century, it was still OK for hostile observers to point out all the too-brown grannies smoking pipes while they ran the farms as prime evidence that we Hillbillies were Not White Enough, and thus inferior.*** Now we’re supposed to forget that anyone besides (the carefully constructed) Nasty White Trash ever lived there, and that said White Trash is still experiencing land loss and environmental destruction. We’re not supposed to know nor care that whole mountains are getting knocked over–ones that people were living on–nor that this is polluting an amazing amount of water and directly endangering people’s lives. “Water is going to be more important to future generations than coal. You cannot drink coal.” #

Whatever happens to these people, they obviously deserve it, if nothing else for being in the way of Progress. It’s obviously their own fault that a number of them are poor, and the rest of us are having to take up the slack (in our minds, if not in reality). They deserve to become butts and scapegoats.

Does any of this sound familiar? There’s a very good reason indeed that southern Appalachia has been referred to as “The Paleface Reservation”.
_________

* As one man put it, in a later period:

Among the whites I was nothing but a poor journeyman tailor, and never could be any thing else….There’s a great deal of talk about liberty, equality, and such great things, among white people; but the divil a bit of liberty or equality did I ever find till I came amongst the Indians… [T]here’s no one to drive you, nor can you drive any body but yourself, and that’s what I call liberty and equality.

–White Workingman living among the Seminoles [ca. 1830] (1)

** Which is enough to make my head want to explode, anyway, considering some of the crap Jackson got up to. Also, see the note above.

*** While a lot of people lost land to mining companies through threat of exposure of their Native ancestry, in the same era as the Wounded Knee massacre. It was illegal for Natives-on-paper to own land in West Virginia until 1964; if they didn’t fight losing that particular piece of land, they wouldn’t be outed and legally prevented from owning more. (Not to mention the not-so-subtle threats of physical genocide.) Of course, most of them couldn’t afford much if any other land after that! No wonder there was a lot of no habla and denial of literacy going around, to avoid signing things. This apparently applied to people with any recorded Native ancestry whatsoever. Even when people have tried to buy back land, most of it in the coalfields is owned by mining interests who won’t sell it even if they’re not using it.

Topics: legends, Native Americans, sacred places, Wampanoag, Seneca, Niagara Falls, Navajo, Cherokee, Papago, Hopewell, Cheyenne, Hopi, Abenaki, Walapai, Grand Canyon

Units of Study: Content-Area, Nonfiction, Talking and Writing About Texts

Tribes: mutual respect

Reading Skills: envisionment, interpretation

My Thoughts: This is a great read aloud for integrating map skills. Using the clues in each legend, students could try and figure out which place is being described. A copy of the map in the back of the book could be distributed to students during the read aloud and partners could work together to locate each sacred place on the map.

These are all words and phrases that that the Cherokee two-spirits use to identify themselves. The concept of two-spirits is present in every North American tribes’ culture. After European colonization most indigenous cultures were Christianized and lost their two-spirit identities. It is up to today’s two-spirit generation to stand up and define what it means to be two-spirit.

Two-spirit is a term used to describe the wide variety of gender and sexuality in native cultures. It comes from the idea that there are two spirits in a person’s body, a male spirit and a female spirit. Two-spirits come in all genders and sexualities. The Cherokee people have a dance, the Stomp Dance, that is said to restore balance to the world. In this dance women shake shells and dance while the men sing. The male bodied two-spirits shake shells with women. In hir’s6 essay “Shaking our Shells: Cherokee Two-spirits Rebalancing the World” Qwo-Li Driskill calls for all Cherokee two-spirits to come together and claim their place in the tribe’s circle. “We are being called to take our place within our communities, to “shell shake” our traditions in order to restore duyuktv7. The responsibilities we have as male-embodied Two-Spirit Cherokees—to sustain our lifeways and cultures—is like shell shaking. We have the responsibility to restore and maintain duyuktv through practicing Cherokee lifeways and ending gender oppressions” (Driskill). Being two-spirited is about more than being gay or lesbian or transgender or intersex. It is about rebalancing the world by taking back the traditional two-spirit roles. It is about shaking shells and weaving baskets for male bodied Cherokee two-spirits. In most tribes the medicine person was a two-spirit. Two-spirits were looked towards for advice because it was thought that they could see both sides of situation easily.

Part of reclaiming the two-spirit identity is reclaiming a culture that was lost with colonization. The Cherokee in particular converted to Christianity early on in colonization. By the time of Andrew Jackson’s presidency, the Cherokee people were very westernized. The current generation of elders struggles with the idea of two-spirits. It is a part of their culture that they have forgotten in lieu of the religious principles of Christianity. This is one of the biggest challenges when it comes to reclaiming the two-spirit identity because Christianity, as it was brought to the Americas, has rigid gender roles and rules about sexuality that do not fit in to the roles of native people in indigenous cultures.

I have struggled with this essay because it has not been a reformation of ideas or concepts that I already knew and understood. It has been a long and tedious journey for me because before this essay I did not know where I stood. I did not know if I was two-spirit or if I could even claim the title. Now I know. I am a Cherokee two-spirit. It is my duty to reclaim my place in the circle, to define what it means to be two-spirit in a modern world.

2009 Grand Cherokee features an enhanced 4.7L V8 engine that delivers a 30% increase in power and a

2009 Grand Cherokee features an enhanced 4.7L V8 engine that delivers a 30% increase in power and a 10% percent increase in torque, yet still manages to improve fuel economy by more than 5%, due to increased compression ratio, improved cylinder-head port flow and a new combustion system.

“You really are getting more for less with the new Grand Cherokee V8 – it’s all part of the enhanced ownership experienced that Jeep is developing,” says David Smith, General Manager of Chrysler New Zealand.

The smooth, high-torque V6 3-litre diesel engine continues as before, as does the 6.1-litre HEMI V8 that powers the SRT8 high performance model.

Also new in the 2009 Grand Cherokee are a variety of premium amenities including the MyGIGTM Multimedia Entertainment System , reversing camera display and an entertainment and communication system. MyGIG enables customers to use touch-screen or voice commands to control all of the features, and includes a 20-gigabyte hard drive where music and photos can be stored. There’s space reserved on the hard drive for approximately 1,600 songs; that’s more than 100 hours of music. And there is a voice-memo recorder feature.

MyGIG is a standard feature on the new Grand Cherokee, other standard features include; ParkSense® rear park assist system, rain-sensing wipers, 8-way memory driver’s seat and a U-connect system which connects to your mobile phone via Bluetooth resulting in your cellphone being operable through the vehicle sound system with handsfree functionality.
The interior is also new, with royal leather and a two-tone colour scheme lifting the style of the cabin.

Improvements to the four-wheel-drive system will make the 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee even more capable off-road. They include Hill Descent Control, Hill Start Assist and Trailer Sway Control.

Hill Descent Control (HDC) is standard on all Grand Cherokee 4×4 models except SRT8. Operational in the “4WD Low” position, HDC provides downhill assistance at a controlled rate of speed. By means of electronic brake control, HDC supplements the gear reduction and engine braking that a traditional mechanical low-range transfer case provides. For ease of operation, Grand Cherokee’s HDC is activated and deactivated automatically, after the HDC button is engaged, as the system senses changes in topography. The system works whether the vehicle is in forward or reverse.

The Hill Start Assist (HSA) allows the driver time to transition from brake to throttle to achieve a smooth launch on a grade. The system will hold brake pressure for two seconds upon the driver’s release of the brake pedal. The ABS system decreases wheel pressure in response to increasing throttle to provide a smooth launch.

Trailer Sway Control is standard on all Grand Cherokee models (except SRT8). This system reduces trailer sway and provides improved trailer stability and increased towing safety.

Detail changes in the 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee – now available as a Limited model with V8 petrol or V6 diesel power and the Hemi-powered SRT8 – are:

Exterior Enhanced
With its upright and substantial posture, the refreshed 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee’s design offers an athletic and contemporary appearance. The grille has been lengthened, and the headlamps are more circular for a more dominant and expressive front view. A new HID headlamp becomes standard on SRT8 and includes an internal optic lens for the park/turn function. Fog lamps have also been lowered for enhanced road visibility. Off-road enthusiasts will be pleased with the new two-piece front fascia, allowing for the entire lower piece to be removed before hitting the off-road trails.
The shape of the body is designed to protect the sides of the vehicle from potential road debris. At the side, a proportionately longer hood and greater distance between the centre of the front axle and the base of the windshield emphasise the engine compartment and help to achieve a more powerful image.

Interior Design Elegant and Functional
The more luxurious cabin has a two tone instrument panel featuring a new level of refinement with bright accents, softer surface, and updated styling.

A new tilt and telescoping steering column is standard, with a new steering wheel that includes two-tone leather and bright chrome accent rings, which house the electronic vehicle information centre’s switches. Also new is the updated line of instrument clusters that feature new brighter LED illumination, with a modern and elegant treatment. When the vehicle is started, the dark-tinted lens fades to reveal chrome-ringed black gauges that are surrounded by a bright silver accent field.

The new floor console has revised cup holders and the Limited models receive a new leather-wrapped and chrome-accented parking brake handle. The door panels have new substantially bolstered armrests for improved ergonomics and comfort.

Jeep Grand Cherokee’s seats are beautifully crafted with contours that are precise, firm and ergonomic, featuring a robust structure. They are purpose-built and designed for long-distance comfort and feature two-tone leather with perforated inserts. In the cargo compartment a reversible load-floor panel is carpeted on one side and offers easy-to-clean plastic on the other. The plastic side includes a large shallow tray for additional utility.

Engineering

Jeep-engineered Hill Descent Control
Jeep engineering designed the Hill Descent Control system to mimic the downhill control and flexibility afforded by the ultra-low gearing found in a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon with its 4:1 ratio transfer case.

Operational in the 4WD Low position, Hill Descent Control provides downhill assistance at a controlled rate of speed with more precision and smoother operation than simply using the brakes. Unlike many of its competitors, the new Grand Cherokee with Hill Descent Control offers extremely smooth transitions between speeds and allows the driver to use the throttle and brakes without turning the system off, with a smooth and controlled return to the preset speed after the driver releases the throttle or brakes.

Once Hill Descent Control is activated by pushing the button in the centre stack, preset speeds can be selected by using the transmission shifter. For ease of operation, after the Hill Descent Control button is engaged, Grand Cherokee’s Hill Descent Control is activated and deactivated automatically, as the system senses changes in topography. The system works whether the vehicle is driven in forward or reverse.

The preset maximum speeds are:
1st gear: 1.6 km/h
2nd gear: 4 km/h
3rd gear: 6 km/h
4th gear: 9 km/h
5th gear or D: 12 km/h
Reverse (R): 1.6 km/h
Neutral (N): 4 km/h

Hill Descent Control was engineered to provide the smoothest transitions possible, even from a complete stop on extremely steep and slippery surfaces. Hill Descent Control is standard on all Grand Cherokee models with the exception of the SRT8.

Hill Start Assist
The Hill Start Assist system provides the driver time to transition from brake to throttle to achieve a smooth launch on a grade. The system will hold brake pressure for two seconds upon the driver’s release of the brake pedal. The Hill Start Assist system decreases wheel pressure in response to increasing throttle to provide a smooth launch. This system is extremely helpful when driving in urban as well as off-road areas with steep hills.

Hill Start Assist is standard on all Jeep Grand Cherokee models with the exception of the SRT8.

Trailer Sway Control
Trailer Sway Control minimises trailer sway (an alternating yaw of the vehicle) and improves handling in adverse towing conditions caused by crosswinds and traffic, provides trailer stability and increases towing safety.

Sensors monitor the vehicle’s movement relative to the driver’s intended path. The vehicle yaw sensor recognises sway. Once the system determines the sway is increasing and is not a result of the driver’s steering input, Trailer Sway Control applies brake pressure on one front wheel to counteract the yaw induced by the trailer and smoothly applies brake pressure to the other wheels to slow the vehicle. As the trailer sways to the other side of the vehicle, Trailer Sway Control will increase pressure to the opposite side of the vehicle. The technology will continue to apply alternating brake pressure and reduce engine torque until the trailer sway is under control.

Four-Wheel Drive Systems

Quadra-Drive II®

The Quadra-Drive II® Jeep 4×4 system offers customers the ultimate in off-road capability. It combines the NV245 full-time transfer case with Electronic Limited Slip Differentials (ELSD) for best-in-class tractive performance. The system instantly detects tyre slip and smoothly distributes engine torque to the tyres with traction. In some cases, the vehicle will even anticipate low traction and adjust to proactively limit or eliminate slip.

The heart of the system is the NV245 active transfer case. This transfer case includes a centre differential coupled with an electronically controlled clutch pack, varying it from a completely open state to completely locked and infinite possibilities in between. The 4-Low gear ratio is 2.72:1.

A key component in the Quadra-Drive II system is the ELSD – an industry-first application front/rear/centre and the benchmark for automatic traction differentials. The ELSD uses electronically controlled clutch packs to automatically and instantly vary from slip to lock at each axle. This maximises traction when needed without any of the on-road drawbacks normally associated with such a robust 4×4 system.

All components of the system work together, continually monitoring needs, to provide smooth and automatic application of the components for best-in-class tractive performance while improving the day-to-day on-road driving experience. For example, the ELSD releases the clutch packs in the front axle during turns to allow differentiation and prevent crow hop.

Powertrains

3.0-litre Common Rail Turbo Diesel (CRD)
The 3.0-litre common rail turbo diesel (CRD) V6 engine produces 160 kW @ 3,800 rpm and 510Nm of torque @ 1,600 – 2,800 rpm. The engine offers up to 30 percent improvement in fuel economy, class-leading torque and outstanding towing capacity (3.5 tonne). And, clean diesel technology reduces CO2 emissions by an average of 30 percent.

4.7-litre SOHC V-8
For 2009 the 4.7-litre V8 engine offers better fuel economy, power and torque than the previous 4.7-litre engine, while at the same time delivering improvements in refinement.

The new 4.7-litre V8 incorporates two spark plugs per cylinder (the only Chrysler Group engine to do so, other than the 5.7-litre HEMI), increased compression ratio, improved cylinder-head port flow and a new combustion system. The result is 223kW @ 5,650 rpm, a 30 percent increase, and 445 Nm of torque @ 3,950 rpm, a 10 percent increase and five percent improvement in fuel economy compared with the previous 4.7-litre V8 engine.

Improvements in the new 4.7-litre V8 result from significant revisions to the induction system, a lightweight piston/rod assembly and reduced accessory drive noise through lower accessory drive speed. Engine smoothness at idle is enhanced with a new cam design, two spark plugs per cylinder and a new valve-lash adjuster system. The new 4.7-litre V8 is also equipped with electronic throttle control.

6.1-litre HEMI® V8
The 6.1-litre HEMI V8 delivers outstanding performance and reduced noise, vibration and harshness. It produces 313kW and 569Nm of torque and delivers a complete performance package with exceptional acceleration and makes the SRT8 the quickest, most powerful Jeep vehicle ever created, offering 0-100kph in the low 5 second range.

Suspension Steering Systems and Transmissions
The short- and long-arm independent front suspension on Grand Cherokee provides the driver with a greater sense of precision and control and more precise steering, and reduces vehicle weight, all without compromising the vehicle’s off-road performance. The five-link rear-suspension geometry, including a track bar, also improves lateral stiffness to match that of the front suspension for optimum handling.

Electronic Stability Program (ESP), which is standard on all models, aids the driver in maintaining vehicle directional stability in severe manoeuvres on any type of surface. It works by using signals from sensors throughout the vehicle that then determine the appropriate brake and throttle adjustments for directional stability.

Grand Cherokee’s rack-and-pinion steering imparts more precise steering to the driver, providing quick response during all types of manoeuvres.

The 3.0-litre CRD engine is mated to the W5J400 five-speed automatic transmission. The 4.7-litre V-8 engine is mated to the 545RFE five-speed automatic transmission. These Grand Cherokee models have class-leading towing capacity of 3.5 tonne(SRT8 Towing restrictions apply). All transmissions feature Electronic Range Select driver interactive shift control. The shifter provides fully automated shifting when in the “drive” position. Or the driver can manually select each gear by simply moving the shifter left and right from the “drive” position using the tiptronic facility. This gives the driver control to precisely match any on-road or off-road requirement.

The temperature might be a near-balmy 70° but the spirit is all winter holiday, most especially at the Centennial Olympic Park. For the 13th year, the only outdoor ice rink in Atlanta opens its doors for traditional family fun.

Ok, so I’ll admit ice skating in Atlanta is a bit surreal; seeing people in shorts and tee shirts wobbling around on the ice. Because, make no mistake, native Atlantans on ice skates just isn’t natural. There was a larger crowd clinging to the railing than braving the ice. Most of us know, instinctively, that ice is both unbearably hard and cold when it meets your posterior regions. But it makes for a great photo op.

It really is Christmassy, though, and one of those things you can do with the whole family, even if you sit on the sidelines and sip hot cocoa. Every inch of park around the ice was decorated with festive lights, giant reindeer and so much other holiday paraphernalia that it made me feel guilty that my ornaments are still in storage and I don’t have a thing on layaway at K-Mart. But hey, there’s always Christmas Eve to do my shopping. That’s what it’s for, right? In the meantime, go ice skating with your kids. It’s different, it’s fun, it’s cheap, and it will remind you, in a genetic-memory sort of way, of life before video games. And don’t worry, learning to ice skate is just like learning to ride a bike. Falling hurts.

The rink is open every day including holidays from Nov. 14, 2009 to Jan. 31, 2010. If ice skating in Atlanta really isn’t your thing and you want to find something different, try MyCustomDay.com.
