This book opens up the homes of individuals and couples to show how they use décor to give their residences a sense of history and autobiography. The Hoveys venture into the apartments, cottages, and townhouses of artists, architects, designers, furniture makers, and landscape designers, who seamlessly integrate inherited keepsakes, tag sale curiosities, collections and memorabilia, and contemporary art. Inspiring in its eclecticism, this book introduces readers to a new kind of modern.

A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing not

A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing.
George Bernard Shaw

I was having a conversation with HB over Skype today, and I started talking about the difference between men and women. I remember on the train from Paris to Geneva, I sat next to this woman who carried herself with poise. I didn’t speak much at first because she spoke mainly in French, and of course not knowing the language, I didn’t want to make a fool of myself. She asked me a question in French (which in that joyous moment I was at the very least excited that I looked the part) but I shook my head to indicate that I didn’t understand what she had asked. She asked the question again in perfect English, and when I replied she knew that I was american. The train ride was almost four hours and we spent three of them talking in deep conversation. Her name was Patricia, and she is one of the very few who was actually born and raised in Geneva. She had married an american man (which is how she could tell I was american) when she was 30 and had been married for almost 35 years. She had two sons and one daughter, whom she was on her way to visit in Montreux. We talked through an array of topics. Her life, her family, how she had met her husband, how she grew up, and much more information that I learned about her in those three hours. We also spoke of the reasons why I was in Europe. I felt like it was safe to open up because she had been a psychology major through “college” and had been so open with me. I started to talk about why I was in Europe. As I continued to talk about my current situation at the time, I knew she was intrigued. She started talking about an art exhibit at the Louvre that her and her husband had seen. In it, she notice that there was this one painting of a woman who torso was made of a set a drawers. Later, as her husband and her were having dinner, they discussed the painting and how she felt like it should have been a man. She delved into her reasoning, and this is part of the conversation that will always stick with me;

“When I saw that woman I saw her torso as a chest of drawers, but women are more like armories and men are more like the chest of drawers. Men can compartmentalize their life into certain drawers. They can place the items they want to deal with and open up those drawers, but when they want to ignore it they can just close it. A woman, she is like an armoire. When you open up her doors, you see everything. Through one way or the other, everything touches everything, and she lives her life as such. For the man, though he may have closed that drawer, it still remains and one day he will open it again an have to deal with what is inside of that drawer. However for a woman, she sees everything in its moment, the conflicts or things at hand and deals with it accordingly to what is in her armoire.”

Wow. That’s how I remember walking away from the conversation. I never did learn her last name or even know if our paths will ever cross again, but I know that her conversation will forever be carried in my life.

As I talked to HB about this conversation, I expanded on this idea. Our drawers or our armoires can only hold so much, and just like we deal with the things that we have in these places, this is the same way we deal with our lives. We brings things into our lives, but we have our capacity of storage, and when it is reached, we have to evaluate what is worth keeping and what we have to give away or throw out. There are somethings that we are unwilling to let go of, like those old pair of jeans or sweater that we have had since high school, or those pair of pants that we swear up and down that we’ll fit into again one day. As each season comes through our life, we have to evaluate what stays in our armoire and drawers and what goes. Some is thrown out or given away, and some is put in storage to come out again when the season is right. However, sometimes when it comes out you realize it wasn’t worth holding on to. This is how I feel like we live our life.

I feel like my armoire stands at the corner of a busy intersection for all to see. Most pass by, not giving a care in the world, some scoff and make judgement on how can someone live so transparently for the world to see. Then there are those who see my armoire from a distance or choose to walk towards it, because there are things in my armoire they secretly have in theirs. These things they keep hidden because they feel if they are exposed, they will be judge negatively. Finally, there are the very rare who see my armoire and by the grace that is within them, they help me organize mine.

My armoire is not for everyone, and I know this. It’s not for the passer-bys, and it’s not for the judgers. I open my life up to others because I know I am not the only one who struggles with the things that I struggle with. Since writing this blog, I have received a handful of messages from people who are currently or have had the same struggles as I have had. This is why I write, this is why I choose to live transparently, because I want people to feel comfortable enough to know that they don’t have to always be perfect. Life is mixture of challenges, temptations, mistakes, triumphs, laughter, and tears, and not one of these is more or less significant than the other.

Sometimes when I write, I struggle and think what do people want to read, and how should I write this one thing. However, I stop myself, think about it, and just put down what is in my heart and authentically what I am feeling. If nothing else, I want to give permission for people to be who they are, without the fear of being judge. I know I am judged a lot, but honestly there are only a few opinions that actually matter to me. For this moment in my life, I feel it is appropriate to live the way that I live, because I live honestly and I evaluate thoroughly the repercussion of my decisions (probably more than I should). I know that I am going to make mistakes from this point til the day that I die, and I hope that I learn from each one of them. I don’t know what will be relevant in my life 6 months, 1 year, 5 or beyond, but I know in this moment I am doing what I am suppose to be doing, and if that changes then I will cross that bridge when I come to it.

Thank you to everyone who takes the time to read my blog, and thank you to those who choose to be a part of my life.

I’m still alive, so there must be a purpose why I am still here, and until I come to make another change in my life, I will document my journey for the people who want to read it.

April is around the corner and this being the last week of March, we thought we would take a look at designer Robert Stilin as he takes AD Espana through an exciting tour of his East Hampton home. The atmosphere that Architectural Digest describes is comfortable, natural, and vibrant reflecting his work and personal life. The dining and living space has a beautiful round table with a 19th century wooden serving tray, surrounded by dark grey upholstered chairs. The back wall showcases an oversized framed photograph of a construction parking lot and underneath is one of several benches, used for storing books and what ever one may carry in the door.

France circa 1900 elegant dining chairs (AW248), China circa 1880 wooden trays (AZ115)

France circa 1950 guillerme and chambron table (AY112)

Robert’s sitting room is very inviting with a various mix of chairs never allowing for a repeated look. One of the chairs is a beautiful khaki colored antique club chair showing wear and tear, which is paired with a wicker lounge chair, which is not expected, but surprisingly well done. An antique industrial French table lamp allows for some nice reading light, paired with a twist leg side table opposite.

England circa 1900 leather wing chair (AZ3), England circa 1880 oak table with barley twist legs (AY92)

On the wall of the main walkway hangs a pair of maps early 1900’s that have been printed on fabric. The Americana feel is evident in the home with the American flag draped over a an industrial wooden and metal bench.

Making room for the new not just in the sense of design but literally in order to allow the renovation to go forward! When we married we inherited a great of furniture from my husband’s great-aunt and it has served us well for many a year, but now with the new contemporary direction of the renovation we feel the time has come to part with many of these pieces. After conferring with family, these remaining items are up for grabs. Ideally, I’d like to have a consignment shop pick up the lot for a flat price and have at it, I’m not looking forward to the process of lots of people poking around and making appointments waiting around for people so anyone shops in the area that have cash and a truck feel free to contact me and make an offer.

The 2 designers having built the property from scratch not to recently, have managed to give age and charm to the space, creating a studio to match their exciting personalities. The large 19th century horse makes a great statement, which was once used in Britain to display saddles. Love the marble pedestal with the ebonzied sculptures of wrestlers and the large armoire in the back of the studio.

The meeting room for accepting clients is decorated with a collection of upholstered bamboo chairs around a 19th century table. Abel will hang fabric in front of his desk for whichever project he’s currently working on. The desk is beautiful paired with an arm-chair with a grey upholstered seat. The mixture of seating shows the verity of ages that Abel collects. Never allowing an 18th century piece to be placed in storage,” it is very distressing” the couple says to see the younger generation throw inheritance into storage. A large 18th bookshelf centers the room, to the left of it hangs a Neo-Gothic mirror.

Featured Artist: Thomas Demand

Words by Monocle:

Thomas Demand has made a career with photographs and films of scenarios that look real but aren’t, and which underscore the dislocation between truth and fiction. But is his work specifically German? Is there such a thing as German art? “What people project is what they see,” he says. “You can see a messy artist such as Jonathan Meese as German, or my clean-cut work as German. What might be identified as German, though, is a coherence in thought.”

Demand says German sentence structure forces this mental clarity (with verbs often at the end of a sentence, a speaker can’t begin without knowing roughly how to end). “That goes really deep into the lower part of your brain,” he says. “You have to be clear in what you want to express. Your language and speech forms your view of the world.”

He sees his country in the midst of social transition; when he was growing up in the 1970s, social class was more uniform – children went to the same kinds of schools and the post-war boom benefitted everyone. Now there are nascent class differences but he also sees that “Germany is much more open than it was even five years ago.”

What is modern Germany’s national brand?
“It’s the Verbindlichkeit [binding commitment], obvious in the German handshake. It’s relatively firm, not sweaty, and not with a second hand on top. It’s not trying to sell you something. That’s what I think is German.”

For months, my boyfriend and I wanted to replace the media console we had under the TV in our living room. After redoing much of the other problem areas in our apartment, it was finally time to look for a new console. We did the usual searching online where we found a few things we liked. But, all the consoles we found were hundreds of dollars. We didn’t want a new console badly enough to be out that much money. So, we thought we would try The Melrose Trading Post. I’ve blogged about The Melrose Trading Post before, but basically, it is a flea market in Los Angeles which pops up every Sunday. The Trading Post has all sorts of finds from clothes, to furniture, to accessories and beyond. We saw this chest of drawers right off the bat and loved it but decided to do another lap around the Trading Post before buying this. There was nothing else that caught our eye and the $65 price tag, we couldn’t beat. I think we definitely got the better end of the deal. The piece looks great under our TV, pulls our living room together, and our wallets are happy.

If you are like me you have loads of T-shirts. I had two dressers that had three drawers each

If you are like me you have loads of T-shirts. I had two dressers that had three drawers each full of T-Shirts and boxes in my walk-in closet full of T-Shirts. I purged and got rid of some of them. But I don’t know about you but I find it had to get rid of my t-shirts. They are so comfortable and I love wearing them. I will wear a t-shirts every day if I could. I do try my best. They are my go to top.

So, with so many t-shirts, I needed to find a way to organize them and contain them in one location. I can’t say this is my original ideal. I did a lot of research on the internet and this is the best organizational ideal for t-shirts, I came across. Although I am still in the process of organizing them. But I wanted to show you how I am organizing my t-shirts.

Below are instruction for organizing your t-shirts. You need to start by folding your t-shirt.

8) only space for two stacks w/opening in the middle

9) made a third stack in the middle of the two.

I can get twice as many t-shirts in one drawer and they are easy to see, instead of picking up each shirt to find the one I am looking for.

I think I need to purge my t-shirts a little more. I have so many I had to focus them in the draw. They look to stuffed in the drawer.

Hope you enjoyed this tutorial. I will start making videos soon. What would you like to see organized? Do you need suggestion/tips on something? Leave me a comment. Please let me know what you think of my organizing. Do you have an organizing tip, you would like to share?

visit this website

You can save lots of money by tackling home improvement projects on your own. There are quite a few things a non-professional can accomplish successfully in the area of home improvement. With the help of this article, you will know where to start.

Remodel on a small scale for bathrooms. Even a small amount of money can help turn a project into a huge impact. Replace the mirror, toilet roll holders, light fixtures, and towel bars. Changing the paint can freshen things and make it seem clean and new. You don’t have to go broke when making your bathroom look more modern.

During the summer, use all the fans that you can. You should install some ceiling fans to keep their air circulating and create a cool environment. Using fans will lower your electricity costs.

Do some research on your own if you can’t pay a designer. Look to the internet and magazines for inspiration. A layout found in a magazine may spark your imagination. You can also find projects that are less expensive.

Choose your project that will produce a large return- this way you make money off of your remodel. As an example, if you choose to convert an unused attic space into a bedroom or rec room, you will receive a good return on your investment if you ever choose to sell. Usually, homeowners gain back more than 4/5 of the cost of this fix when selling their house.

Keep your toilet bowl clean by pouring bleach inside it. This may smell bad at first, but it will sanitize and clean your toilet. Open the bathroom window if the smell is too strong.

A large mirror can add depth to a narrow room. The wall across from the mirror will be reflected within it, generating an illusion that the space is deeper than it really is. You can make the effect even more stunning by placing the mirror opposite a fantastic accent wall.

You need a dry day if your project involves painting. This important tip is vital to your success when painting. Your project will last longer on humid days, as this is when paint takes much longer to dry. If you paint on dry days, you will expedite the process.

You should always keep your air conditioner filter changed. A dirty AC filter causes your air conditioner to work inefficiently and consume more energy. Additionally, it may cause the AC to run for extended and unnecessary periods of time. To halt buildup, change the filter monthly.

If your home doesn’t need major upgrades, consider adding additional living space. What sort of room can you add for increased function? It increases home’s value and makes it more pleasant to live in. You should do this once you have the money to spend on home improvement projects.

Homes that have not been updated or renovated typically sell more slowly and for less money. Perhaps the best thing for improving your home’s value is to update your dark, outdated kitchen. This will also ensure you get back most of the money you spent.

With careful reasearch and planning, most people can do some home improvement with good results. It isn’t always easy, so make sure you are careful. You might run into additional issues as you start working on a project or find that the tools you have are not adapted to the situation.
