By Cara Sulieman

LITTLE Keira Edwards must have thought all her Christmases had come at once after stumbling across this giant festive cake.

The two year old was wide-eyed with wonder at the seven-foot high monster treat which has gone on display in Edinburgh.

The brightly coloured confection towers over children in the posh department store and will be handed out to shoppers later this month.

It took artist Connie Viney four weeks to prepare and bake the cake before it took pride of place amongst the toys.

The 23-year-old’s edible sculpture is part of a project by Edinburgh Sparkles to create four unusual decorations to be dotted around the city.

“A taste for my work”

Over nine days from December 12 the baked delicacy will be cut up and given out to Christmas shoppers.

And Keira, who was visiting Edinburgh from Chester with dad Mark, was making sure she was front of the queue.

Connie said: “I love the fact that people can literally get a taste for my work.

“Why not make a sculpture from cake?

“There’s something really festive about encouraging people to come together and share something, which is what I hope my decoration will do.”

And shoppers in the city will also be able to pick up a free Christmas card complete with stamps.

Heart of Midlothian postcard

Edinburgh College of Art student Lindsey Fyfe has designed the postcards for the residents of the capital to send their festive messages around the world.

It features an icy Heart of Midlothian and will be available to pick for free in shops and St Giles Cathedral.

Lindsey said: “Rather than make a decoration to hang in this beautiful city, I am giving 1000 people the chance to send a small piece of Edinburgh out to the world.

“It is my hope that the project unites participants throughout the city in sending, receiving and re-connecting at this festive time.”

Also commissioned was a collage of snow geese in John Lewis and a magical wintery character at Princes Mall.

Head of Destination Edinburgh Marketing Alliance, Kenneth Wardrop said: “This is a really exciting Christmas for Edinburgh and we are proud to showcase work from the city’s creative talent as part of it.

“Each submission chosen gives an original and fresh take on what a decoration can be and we hope that visitors enjoy them.”

It wasn’t the best match you will ever see down at Broadhall Way, but we did enough to secure

It wasn’t the best match you will ever see down at Broadhall Way, but we did enough to secure the three points against a poor Chester side. Westley named a similar team to what started on Saturday against Forest Green, with Mitchell Cole, David Bridges and Charlie Griffin again left out. Chester named Nick Chadwick up front alongside former Cambridge United striker Mark Beesley. Former Doncaster defender Tim Ryan captained the side.

The first half was a fairly boring spectacle. Both sides didn’t create much going forward, although I felt Boro played some nice stuff in the first half without ever looking threatening going forward. The pace of Yemi Odubade on the flanks was an outlet the team tried to exploit, but to Chester’s credit they handled him quite well this evening. Chris Beardsley again was disappointing up front. He didn’t seem to win much in the air and lost possession of the ball too often. Ryan had him in his pocket for the majority of the match.

It was the visitors who had the first serious effort on goal, when Sean Kelly connected to a free-kick, but his effort hit the post and was cleared away. It would of been harsh on Boro, who were looking comfortable up until then. The two teams continued to cancel each other out as the half went on, but Boro got the decisive opening goal when Yemi Odubade volleyed in from 10 yards. It was a good finish from the former Oxford man, who has impressed in recent weeks. For me, Yemi was man of the match tonight because of his work rate alone. He chased everything down and got back to defend when he had to. His goal was his reward for a good night’s work.

Graham Westley made one of the strangest tactical decisions at half time. Lee Boylan was replaced by John Ashton. Ashton moved to right back while Ronnie Henry came in centre midfield. I didn’t understand the decision at all as just the one change had totally disrupted the Stevenage side. There were only about 4 players on the field in the same position as they started. Chester couldn’t take advantage of this though and the second half was much like the first. Chester didn’t really ever threaten Chris Day’s goal and Boro didn’t create many chances. The game was fairly scrappy and the wet and windy weather wasn’t helping the standard of football either.

David Bridges came on after an hour to replace Darren Murphy, who again was stupidly booked earlier in the half. Murphy has got to get these silly bookings out of his game sooner rather than later. I don’t mind him as a player because I think he gives the midfield a more physical presence which is needed in some games. Bridges came on and within 5 minutes Boro had doubled their lead. Mark Roberts finished well after the visitors had failed to clear Andy Drury’s corner. Game over.

The game petered out after Roberts’ goal and Boro went on to win the game with relative ease. It’s a good win especially as Oxford did what we did at the weekend and beat Forest Green at The New Lawn. 5 points remains the gap, with the leaders in the FA Cup this coming weekend. If we beat Salisbury we will go to within 2 points of Wilder’s side, although they will have the game in hand. Boro’s win tonight also puts us now 4 points clear of 3rd place York who have played 1 game more than ourselves and with Kettering being beaten at home again tonight, they are now 6 points away from us.

Variety/Cynthia Littleton—It’s a potent combination: Stephen + Steven

Stephen King and Steven Spielberg are joining forces to develop a limited series based on King’s just-released supernatural thriller “Under the Dome.” DreamWorks TV has optioned the book and is looking to set it up as an event series, likely for cable. DreamWorks principal Stacey Snider was key in bringing the project to the company. Spielberg, King and Snider will exec produce along with DreamWorks TV chiefs Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey. The book, which has earned strong reviews as a return to form for the prolific author, revolves around the drama that unfolds after an invisible force field suddenly descends on a small vacation town in Maine. As the locals fight for their survival, the town descends into warring factions led by enigmatic characters.

DreamWorks is starting to meet with writers for the project. The plan is to set a writer before shopping the skein to prospective buyers.

Spielberg and King have worked together in the past, developing a screen adaptation of King’s 1984 novel “The Talisman,” on which Spielberg has had the option for more than 20 years. That project has been developed as a feature, and it came close to being done as a mini for TNT a few years ago until it was tabled for budgetary reasons.

The “Dome” deal continues a burst of activity on the smallscreen side for Spielberg and DreamWorks TV. Among the high-profile projects in the works is a series about the development of a fictional Broadway tuner for Showtime. Another Showtime contender is a costume-drama revolving around the Borgia clan, penned by Neil Jordan and with Robert Zemeckis also producing.

Tomorrow night see’s the league’s bottom club, Chester City visit Broadhall Way for the

Tomorrow night see’s the league’s bottom club, Chester City visit Broadhall Way for the first time since the opening day of the 2003/2004 season. Chester won the Conference that season after finishing 1 point clear of Hereford United, who were arguably the better side. Stevenage, with Westley at the helm, finished in 8th position, but took 4 points off the eventual champions which included a 2-1 win at the Deva Stadium. More shockingly, Rocky Baptiste scored in that game for Boro.

City have had many problems since their promotion back to the football league and they were finally relegated back to the non league after going into administration. City’s problems continued in the summer when they were docked another 10 points before a ball was even kicked ahead of their return to the Conference. The future of the club has been in the balance for a while, but things finally look to be sorting themselves out. After Mark Wright left the club again during the summer, the experienced Mick Wadsworth, who once applied for the Boro job, took charge, but soon left after a dismal start to the campaign. Former Forest Green manager Jim Harvey is now in charge of City and has another relegation battle to survive.

The two sides have already met this season. Boro ran out 1-0 winners thanks to a early Michael Bostwick goal. In fact, the match at the Deva was similar to the game on Saturday against Forest Green. Boro were the dominant force for most of the game, but couldn’t extend on their 1 goal. Chester have lost their last 3 games in the league including Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at home to Altrincham. Their last win was away against Grays when Nick Chadwick’s brace helped the Cheshire side to victory. Boro are unbeaten in their last 15 league games and have only been beaten once this season by leaders Oxford.

Graham Westley must decide whether to recall Charlie Griffin to the starting 11 after he missed Saturday’s game due to illness. Lee Boylan scored in that game and must be confident of retaining his place. It will also be interesting to see whether GW brings back Mitchell Cole. I don’t think Cole has been that effective this season and he was dropped for the Forest Green game. Yemi is in good form and Chris Beardsley had a solid game at the weekend so I think the manager may stick with the same front 3. Chester boss Jim Harvey slammed his players ‘not good enough’ after the weekend’s defeat so he could make a few changes.

“The truth is some of the boys in there are not good enough. As a group of players they are going to find it really difficult this year.” Harvey on Chester this season

On paper it looks like a home banker and I think with Chester’s recent record and the amount of goals they’ve conceded recently, I’d be very surprised if we didn’t win the game comfortably. City have conceded 9 goals in their last 3 games and are low in confidence. The long journey down to Hertfordshire on a Tuesday night won’t make the game any more easier for the visitors. We bounced back well on Saturday against FGR, but still need to be more clinical in front of goal. Sooner or later we’re going to be caught out for not killing teams off, so tomorrow night is a perfect opportunity to put that right.

Stevenage Squad

Ashley Bayes, Chris Day, Scott Laird, Ronnie Henry, Jon Ashton, Mark Roberts, Mark Albrighton, Eddie Odhiambo, Michael Bostwick, Stacy Long, David Bridges, Darren Murphy, Andy Drury, Joel Byrom, Mitchell Cole, Yemi Odubade, Lee Boylan, Charlie Griffin, Chris Beardsley, Peter Vincenti

Prediction: Boro 3-1 Chester City

My first impression of Chester was that he looked rather solemn and distinguished, and I was prepared for a dog who would be slightly aloof, but polite about receiving attention.

Boy, was I wrong. (And boy, was I glad to be wrong.) Chester reminded me of a happy puppy — affectionate (he gives extremely wet kisses and seems to think all wrongs can be cured with a good bellyrub and a steady stream of slurpy kisses), social (he greeted other dogs and people rather happily), and very, very snuggly (he loves sitting next to you on the bench and leaning against you. Who needs a blanket when Chester’s around?)

The other details: he’s roughly 6-7 months old, has a face that seems like the exact middle of a boxer and a bloodhound, a lab retriever personality. He already knows ’sit’ and will do anything to get you to like him, which makes him very trainable. No word yet on his take on toys, but I suspect he’d make a wonderful walking/running partner.

Chester is a very loving dog– if you think you have love and affection to match his own, by all means, do come see him in Kennel 14. For more information, contact doginfo@apsofdurham.org

Starting Nov. 22 – Dec. 20, Sundays in Chester Center from 12 -4 you will be able again to get some of your favorite farm fresh products. Some of the vendors will be outside on the sidewalk while others will be hosted inside a few select locations. We have heard there will be storytelling, music, book signings, the unveiling of the Cummings & Good Calendar and delicious foods cooked off the Dinners at the Farm Truck.

It must be hard to run a tango scene in a university town. You advertise, work up a good crowd, teac

It must be hard to run a tango scene in a university town. You advertise, work up a good crowd, teach them to be good leaders and followers, then they get their degrees and move on. Anna and John have my admiration for this. We may not always agree about the music, but I will always love coming here and dancing with Anna.

Despite having an 80th birthday party to go to, we could not miss the workshop and tea dance that they had arranged in Bangor.

Saturday started out filthy, rain and mist, almost no light. Even at a good pace it would take me an hour and a quarter to drive. We decided to take the SEAT my little Suzuki although economical would not be a good drive that low down in the rain. When we arrived at Bangor I was glad, the narrow streets offered almost no parking, and when we found a spot, I was not sure what condition I would find the car in.

So suitably stressed put we arrived in Penrallt church hall a beautiful stone building with ornate wooden ceilings. Greeted by Sharon as a long lost friend (Well it was over 36 hours) and then Anna and john. Of course I also greeted little Leo, can I adopt him as my grandson??

Sharon did a milonga workshop. She kept it very simple, but I thought it good, that as most of these were very new beginners, they were getting an introduction early to milonga, so hopefully they would not learn to fear it. After a few stragglers arrived the numbers evened out and Viv stayed on the sidelines to help Sharon.

I was very impressed, most of the ladies here had never danced milonga before yet they followed me well.

All too soon the class was over and it was time to attack the cakes. I tried hard to be good, honestly. I am getting close to my target weight, but every time I think I may achieve it I am surrounded by vicious cakes, all determined to make me suffer.

Anna had promised to save me, but Leo was taking up her time, still I did not do too badly.

I got those dances with her eventually and most of the women at some point. I did leave one woman standing when Lola came on; I said that I would return to her when it was over. I don’t get this, why is everyone suddenly playing Lola? I believe that it was played on Strictly, but that will never make it a tango. It is four four time, but it does not even sound tangoish. I am threatening a screaming fit next time it is played.

OK Sharon played (apart from Lola) all traditional tango, I suspect someone requested it, and lets face it we are outside our realm, keep a low profile.

All in all we had good time, some even said they may come to Chester, certainly all seemed to have a flair for tango, and young people who would spread out across the UK may well start tango scenes all over the country.

More power to you Tango Bangor.

Some carried on dancing but for some the cake was too much.

Danach noch nen Film angesehen, also wenig spannend.

Sonntags dann mal wieder aufm Camden Market .

Danach also wieder in den Pub.

Der Kater kam dann also Montagmittag an.

It was our first game together but that was no excuse for the lack of fitness, poor ball control, appalling shooting and the fact we allowed one man from the opposition to single-handedly dismantle us and score a ridiculous amount of goals.

Knee has inflamed a bit and back is quite sore, but straight into the gym today. Hopefully Monday Night Football returns this coming week and soon this fitness issue will be a distant memory, for me at least.

In Stephen King’s mesmerizing new masterpiece – his biggest, most riveting novel since The Stand – a Maine town and its inhabitants are isolated from the world by an invisible, impenetrable dome.

On an entirely normal, beautiful Autumn day in Chester’s Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field – the Dome. Planes fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener’s hand is severed at the wrist and people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families. Dale Barbara, Iraq vet, teams up with a few intrepid citizens against the town’s corrupt politician. But time, under the Dome, is running out . . .

Celebrated storyteller Stephen King returns to his roots in this tour de force featuring more than 100 characters – some heroic, some diabolical – some and a supernatural element as baffling and chilling as any he’s ever conjured.

Stephen King appeared on Good Morning America this morning to discuss his new thriller, out today, “Under the Dome,” which he says can be read as a metaphor for the American condition. He had the idea for the book in the 70’s… will it be successful and relevant today?
