That’s where Alba Colon is the program manager of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Chevrolet Racing.  She oversees the engineers who test engines and designs that can shave milliseconds off a driver’s time. In her current position, Colon supports all of Chevrolet’s race teams with technology, simulations and parts design.

Colon says she can’t reveal how many engineers she oversees, because it would divulge her secret to her competitors.

“There’s a lot of competition among engineers,” she says laughing. “What I love is the challenge. That passion to be the best. I love to work with the teams to be sure we are the best, and that we accomplish the win — we are here to win races.”

It’s the love of that challenge that wakes her up in the morning, and her drive has kept GM in the winner’s circle. For nearly two decades, her expertise on engines and aerodynamics has had a significant impact on the success of Chevrolet, which is now approaching its 700th victory, the most of any manufacturer in the history of the sport.

The  latest study shows 38 percent of U.S. Latinos say they are at least “casual” fans of NASCAR, though there is a presence of Latino drivers such as, Victor Gonzalez, Jr., Juan Pablo Montoya and Aric Almirola– all racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race this Sunday.

“When I came to the sport, there were not too many women engineers, and no Hispanics,” says Colon, who is still the only female brand manager from a manufacturer working in NASCAR. “I came in saying, ‘I am just one of the guys.’ They were just not used to seeing someone like me, but I am one more of them. It doesn’t matter what I look like or come from.”

Colon got her mechanical engineering degree from the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez. In 1991, she helped build race cars when she participated in the Formula SAE competition, an automotive design contest for students. General Motors offered her a job in 1994, and she has been with the company ever since.

Born in Spain but raised in Puerto Rico, she says her first dream as a girl was to be an astronaut, and one of her first inspirations was her dad.

 “My father is a medical doctor,” she says. “Science was always in the house, and he was fascinated by space and the theory of relativity. I would discuss math and science with him always.”

Education, she says, was the major factor leading to her successful career.

“Education opens doors,” says Colon. “That’s my biggest advice to everyone — once you have that key, you have to work hard.”

Colon’s job requires her to travel nearly every weekend from February until November. She averages approximately 100,000 miles on the road per year.

“It seems like I’m always traveling — my week starts on Thursday afternoon, and Friday, Saturday, and Sunday I am at the racetrack,” says Colon, who works on marketing and reports, and meets with engineers the rest of the week. “We work on strategies to make designs better. What we do takes most of the year. The weeks go so fast.”

But she is not complaining.  In fact, Colon sounds as excited as a kid in an amusement park. Although she is married, she never had children, but she calls the drivers and her crew her kids.

“You are blessed when you can wake up and love what you do,” says Colon. “To know I can make it a better sport — I just love it. Racing is my calling. I don’t plan on retiring any time soon.”

10 giờ sáng, ‘đoàn thử xe’ đến showroom Chevy An Thái, papa tranh thủ vào garage bảo trì luôn chiếc Captiva vì đèn báo sensor báo loạn cào cào mấy bữa nay. Tui và cổ động viên nấu lẩu lò mò vào showroom, contact với bạn Sales tên Vinh. Không khí thoải mái, bạn Sales vui vẻ đi làm giấy lái thử xe cho tui không quên photo giúp bằng lái và giấy chứng minh. Một lúc sau, xe test của tụi tui xuất hiện, một em LS, vì tui yêu cầu thử chiếc LT 1.2l, LS cấu hình cũng tương đương, test máy móc, cảm giác lái là chính.

BÊN NGOÀI

Spark 2012 khi nhìn gần có kích thước khá bự, nhưng khi nhìn trên đường, em ấy trông bé xíu xiu. Công bằng mà nói, Spark không hề xấu tí nào như thiên hạ vẫn hay thường bảo. Tui nghĩ rằng, định kiến về một chiếc Matiz ngố rừng kiểu Hàn Quốc là một bóng đen bự vẫn còn phủ trùm lên mẫu xe đậm chất Mỹ này. Mọi người quan niệm Matiz rẻ tiền, xấu, máy yếu, tất cả những hệ luỵ đó vẫn đè lên mẫu xe ‘tội nghiệp’ và thiệt là oan quá mà Bao Đại Nhơn!

Một lần nữa, tui khẳng định là Spark không hề xấu nhé, ngược lại tui cho rằng nó rất cá tính. Với phần đầu khá gân guốc với những đường cắt khoẻ mạnh, Spark ăn điểm thiết kế trước đối thủ là chiếc Kia Morning/Picanto có thiết kế khá nữ tính, nhu mì. Tuy nhiên, cá tính của Spark thì không phải ai cũng ‘tiêu hoá’ được.

Spark có phần đầu khá to, phần đuôi lại khá nhỏ nên có cảm giác cả chiếc xe nổi bật bởi phần đầu bự quá khổ. Tui cũng đã nghĩ tới việc ‘thửa’ cho ẻm một cái cánh chuồn để cân bằng ‘thị giác’ cho em ấy khi mua về.

Spark 2012 và 2013 có khác nhau…vài chút, đó là lưới tản nhiệt Spark 2013 kiểu mới, không phải hình lục giác tổ ong như 2012, phần đầu cũng bớt ‘móm’ hơn. Phần đuôi có cặp đèn hậu mới, đỏ nguyên con và phần lưới giả màu đen ở thanh cản sau cũng làm cho xe thêm phần rộng và vững chắc hơn.

BÊN TRONG

Nội thất Spark 2012 LT trông đơn giản, nhưng hoàn bằng da chứ không phải nỉ nhé. Da ghế của Chevy tui để ý từ dòng bình dân cho đến cao cấp cũng có đặc điểm chung đó là rất căng, và được làm kỹ, điều tui chưa thấy được ở một vài mẫu xe, đặc biệt là xe Hàn. Ngay cả khi dùng qua nhiều năm, độ căng vẫn hầu như không giảm sút, không hề thấy các nếp gấp nhăn nheo.

Điều làm tui thích thú và cũng không thích thú (khi chạy thử) đó là quả đồng hồ báo tốc độ trông khá tức cười, tương tự như đồng hồ của những mẫu xe mô-tô thể thao. Chúng khá nhỏ và khó nắm bắt được ngay trong lần đầu tiếp xúc.

Cảm giác khi ngồi vào ghế lái trái ngược hẳn với khi ngồi vào băng sau, rộng vs. chật. Trong khi ghế lái và phụ lái ngồi duỗi chân phải nói khá thoải mái, nhưng băng sau lại cho cảm giác bị bó chân, đặc biệt là phần lưng ghế điều chỉnh hạn chế dẫn đến khi ngồi phải thẳng lưng rất khó chịu nếu hành trình trên đoạn đường xa.

Ghế sau của Spark gập kiểu 60/40 nên cũng không hoàn toàn sử dụng hết không gian khi cần chở đồ đạc quá nhiều.

CẢM GIÁC LÁI

Phải chi tui đi xe máy đến lái thử chứ không phải ‘lái nhờ’ Captiva của papa =..=!. Một trời một đỉnh…đèo (nói ‘vực’ thì tội cho em nó qúa mà cũng chẳng đến nỗi ‘vực’ đâu). Tay lái trợ lực dầu xoay trở khá cứng, nhưng không hiểu sao cảm giác vẫn đỡ hơn chiếc Cruze LTZ tui từng lái thử, cứng dã man. Một phần quan trọng khác đó là chân côn khá nhẹ, tui thì thích chân côn đầm hơn một tí, không quá nhạy, từ đó cho cảm giác ga tốt hơn.

Khi lên đường thử, trên xe có 4 người, coi như tính là toàn tải, động cơ DOHC 16 van, 80 mã lực vẫn hoạt động bình thường ở mức tải này, máy lạnh vẫn phả đều đặn. Nhưng khi tui tăng tốc đến 80km/h là cảm thấy máy bắt đầu đuối. Kiểu này thì không biết bản số tự động 1.0L 68 mã lực thì còn ‘đuối’ thế nào nữa, tui chợt liên tưởng đến mẫu KIA Morning/Picanto, cũng 68 mã lực, số tự động, chắc tăng tốc lên trên 70-80km/h chắc thở hết ra hơi quá.

Bạn kỹ thuật ngồi bên chỉ tui quẹo vào đường hẻm gần đó để trải nghiệm cảm giác luồn lách trong hẻm là thế nào. Phải công nhận, vụ vào hẻm đã thật, cổ động viên nấu lẩu cứ hú rít, trầm trồ khi đi đường hẻm ‘kiểu này đi Cap thì có mà đậu tuốt ngoài đường bự nhé’. Tuy nhiên, như tui đã nói ở trên, luồn lách đường nhỏ phải có tay lái trợ lực thiệt ngon lành, chứ hơi cứng cũng bớt dzui đi một tí :).

ĐÁNH GIÁ CỦA CHILI PEPPER GARAGE

Trên thị trường xe hơi Việt Nam hiện nay thì Spark xuất hiện như một ứng cử viên sáng giá nhất trong dòng xe siêu nhỏ đô thị, giá ổn, khoảng 420 triệu cho tất tần tật. Động cơ Mỹ, bền, tiết kiệm xăng, dáng nhỏ xinh, nội thất da được làm kỹ lưỡng, dễ chạy, dễ đậu, che mưa che nắng thay cho xe máy thì tuyệt vời. Tuy nhiên, điểm làm tui không ưng nhất của Spark chính là bộ bánh khá mỏng, đặc biệt khi nhìn tổng thể em ấy từ phía sau, cặp bánh mỏng và nhỏ xíu làm chiếc xe trông mất cân đối hẳn ra.

Một điểm cộng thiệt bự cho Chevy Spark đó là từ các bạn Sales dịch vụ tốt, vui vẻ, không tỏ ra làm giá như các bạn ở Saigon Ford.
