Well, the truth of the matter is that internal energy is in many arts, and if it is not, it can be put into any art easily. The principles of internal energy, you see, are easy to understand. So if you study kenpo or tae kwon do, or even boxing, then the door is hereby opened for you, this article is going to lay out those principles and shove you through the door.

First, you have to have phenomenal basics, not just good, but phenomenal. What this means is that you must drop your weight when striking or blocking, and do so with such awareness that you actually create a beam of energy down your leg. You must align the parts of your body so that they form an unbroken line of intention, but are relaxed, very important that they are relaxed, because intention and energy will flow easier through a body that is relaxed.

Now, you must make sure that you move the parts of your body at the same time. Everything starts together, and everything stop together, this is called Coordinated Body Motion. Analyze your body so that when it swings into alignment all of the pieces are moving in harmony, and with consideration for their mass and size and shape and so on.

Now, you’ve got basics, and here comes the internal energy. Fill a pipe half with sand and cap it. Move that pipe in such a way that when you stop it all the sand strikes the inside of the pipe at the same time.

This is what internal energy is and does. It is energy swirled on the inside of your body in such a way that it hits the inside of the block, or strike, or foot, or whatever, at the same time. We used to develop this type of energy in karate all the time, but we didn’t call it internal because it didn’t have any undue significance, it was just the way you moved.

It is helpful if you move slowly, concentrating on feeling the motion of energy inside your body. And, to be truthful, the internal Wudan martial arts have arranged their forms so as to help the process. But you can feel it in Karate, or tae kwon do, or any striking art, if you just take the time to appreciate what you are doing.

The real key is that this method, and, to be truthful, all methods, rely on awareness. It is an idea that moves awareness, and the path of this awareness can be called Chi, or Ki, or Prana, or pneuma, or intention. Now, the real question here is whether you can take the time to invest your movements with chi, or intention, or whatever you want to call it, do you have the patience and the awareness to make something significant out of your martial art.

 The ancient Taoist sages who mastered mind and body had many different insights and techniques to have a healthy life and as a plus Self Realization.  It is said that some of the teachings of Taoism originally come from India. This all makes sense if one investigates into the nature of Sanatana Dharma (hinduism) and Taoism. One can see the similarities between them. In particular I want to note is the use of energy in both systems. Not only this but both systems aim at Self Realization.

 With that said breath work has been very instrumental to healthy living and enlightenment in both sciences. Many are familiar with the Yogic use of breath and energy work. The same thing is found in Taoist Yoga. What is deeply interesting to me is the technique of no breath. In Taoism this is called Embryonic Breathing. In Sanatana Dharma and Yogic paths one can achieve such a state in which no breath is necessary and yet the practictioner is able to control energy throughout his or her body and remain healthy and ALIVE!

 In Taoism and in particular the practice of Qi Gong (sometimes spelled as Chi Kung) there is a use of Embryonic Respiration.  It is the breath of no breath. This is possible when both the mind and body are fully relaxed. The mind and body must be relaxed and filled with Qi (Qi is life force, in yoga its called prana).  Focusing on breathing is an easy way to relax not only the body but also the mind. A great method is focusing on the lower abdomen or the dan tian.

 The lower dan tian or abdomon is about three inches below the naval. This is natural respiration. If you observe an infant you will notice that the infant breaths from this region. Overtime due to stress on the body and on the mind we forget this form of breathing. This breathing is very instrumental to good health and also mental clarity.

 In order to begin Embryonic Respiration start breathing naturally. Just let the air come in and out. Watch the rise and fall of the lower dan tien (you dont have to look down). Have your eyes closed gently. You can sit in a chair (preferably on the edge of the chair with feet firmly on the ground and back straight but not rigid). You can sit cross legged if you like just make sure the spine is straight yet not in a rigid way. You are not trying to be a tough guy or woman let it be natural. Your right hand should rest gently on your lap and your left fist gently closes on the thumb of the right hand. This is a special mudra or hand gesture called the yin-yang mudra.

 Let the breath be very natural. Have a few minutes to relax into simply allowing the rise and fall of the lower abdomen. After you have done this for a few minutes begin to visualize Qi (life force or energy) entering your body entirely. Let every part of your body be fused with this life giving Qi. Let no cell be without this Qi. The Qi pervades every part of your body. Every organ, vessel, cell, everything. As you breath out visualize stale Qi leaving your body. Do this set 9 times.

After you have completed the above cycle move on to visualizing Qi entering the upper dan tien or heart area of your body. Allow Qi to pervade the entire heart area of your body. As you breath out imagine this energy or Qi moving down into your lower dan tien or lower abdomen. Let this Qi pervade the lower region. Return again with another inbreath visualizing Qi entering into the heart area, then breath out vizualizing the Qi going down into the lower abdomen. Do this also for 9 times.

After that simply vizualize the Qi in the heart area as you breath in, then imagine the same energy staying inside your body and moving down into the lower abdomen. Then as you breathe in again vizualize that energy in the lower abdomen rising up to the heart region. Do this for 9 sets.

 After the above cycle simply visualize the Qi staying in the abdomen. See it rising up in the abdomen with each in breath. Watch the Qi fall to the lower abdomen with each out breath. Do this 9 times.

Gently as you complete these cycles you will notice your breath getting quiet. It is getting very deep. Deep and slow. Breathing in you know that you are breathing in a long gentle compassionate breath. Breathing out you know you are breathing out a slow breath. Soon the breath will be without effort and you will not even know you are breathing! Don’t panic your still alive just enjoy this simplicit natural embryonic breathing. A gentle peace will definately come over you.

 Never rush this or expect anything. Simply let the Dao or lot God or Emptiness or the Universe do it for you. Don’t let your ego parade over what is happening or what is not happening. Don’t let the ego tell you when you should be experiencing this stillness. When you find that your ego is trying to rush the process simply say to yourself “I will let the Dao do it for me”.  The Dao is the Formless Reality or your Deepest Nature. It is Siva, it is God, it is ULtimate Reality. Allow this life force or the One Life to do it through you. So don’t beat yourself up. In Taoism a let of emphases is on NON EFFORT!

CHI / KI / ZEN Dalam tradisi mistik Cina, kekuatan yang sama disebut ‘Chi.’ Chi mendiami semua benda dalam alam termasuk manusia. Chi ini disebut sebagai mikro kosmos dan adalah bagian Chi semesta yang disebut makro kosmos. Chi semesta yang tunggal sebagai esensi semesta satu-satunya (monisme) bergerak secara dualistis melalui dua kutub Yin dan Yang yang bertentangan, namun harmonis dan seimbang.

Sama dengan faham Pantheisme India, konsep ‘tuhan’ dalam I-Ching juga bersifat pantheisme dimana ada kesamaan zat antara alam dan manusia. “Manusia dicipta dalam persamaan ujud dengan Tuhan. Dengan ungkapan lain, roh manusia adalah Roh Tuhan. … Tuhan tak berwajah dan tak berbentuk. Dia adalah sumber hidup segala yang ada.” [1].

Paham ini jelas menyerupakan Tuhan dengan makhluk, maka jelaslah bertentangan dengan aqidah tauhid yang menegaskan perbedaan antara Tuhan dan makhluk.  Allah berfirman, “Tidak ada sesuatu pun yang serupa dengan Dia, dan Dialah Yang Maha Mendengar lagi Maha Melihat.” (Asy-Syuura: 11). Kita harus tetap berpegang teguh kepada prinsip-prinsip Tauhid yang murni yang mempercayai bahawa Allah Ta’ala itu maha Esa dan berbeda dengan makhluk.

Taoisme percaya bahwa keberadaan ‘Tao’ sebagai realita dasar semesta mengekspresikan dirinya dalam kekuatan energi ‘Chi’ mengikuti hukum Yin dan Yang, yang saling bertentangan, namun saling melengkapi secara harmonis dan seimbang. Dalam Taoisme tidak ada konsep mengenai Tuhan yang berpribadi. Tugas manusia untuk mencapai kesehatan atau keselamatan adalah dengan cara menyelaraskan kekuatan chi dalam dirinya ke dalam irama Yin-Yang Chi semesta.

Yin & Yang, pengobatan ini lahir dari negeri Cina. Ilmu pengobatan cina memang telah maju sejak 2500 tahun SM, sebelum berkuasa kaisar Yao.  Disebut Yin & Yang karena pengobatan ini erat hubungannya dengan kepercayaan terhadap dua dewa yang menjadi unsure penting, yaitu Yin (dewa bumi) dan Yang (dewa langit).  Keduanya mempengaruhi alam dan isinya, dalam diri manusia juga terdapat unsure Yang dan Yin itu, jika keduanya seimbang manusia menjadi sehat dan jika tidak seimbang, manusiapun menjadi sakit. Banyak terapi yang digunakan dalam pengobatan ini diantaranya Akupuntur, Akupresur, pijatan dengan tangan, togkat, biji-bijian, batu kasar, batu halus, dan batu giok, ada juga dengan jamu-jamuan, sihir, dengan magent tubuh dan lain-lain. Namun pengaruh budha cukup kuat hingga mempengaruhi pembemdaharaan pengobatan mereka yang sekarangpun banyak kita kenal yaitu senam-senam yang berpangkal pada Yoga, yaitu pengobatan dengan pengaturan nafas yang sebenarnya berasal dari ajaran Dahtayana.  Pengobatan yang awalnya terbatas ditingkat biara-biara Budha maka wajar bila didalamnya mengandung unsure mistik.  Pengobatannya dilakukan dengan cara rabaan renggang dan pemusatan tenaga lalu dihubungkan dengan kepercayaan-kepercayaan terhadap gangguan ruh-ruh dan makhluk halus, yang ia usir dengan pancaran “Sinar Putih” dan “Tangan Sakti”.  Mereka menyebut kekuatan itu dengan “Chie”. Sesungguhnya Yoga itu termasuk cara peribadatan Budha dan Hindu.  Menurut penganut ajaran Budha, dengan Yoga meditasi, konon kabarnya jiwanya dapat bersatu dengan “Budha atau bersatu dengan Brahman atau Mahatman” menurut agama Hindu.

Konsep Chi dalam Taoisme adalah energi yang memberi daya hidup kepada manusia. “Energi adalah suatu daya dinamis, dalam aliran tetap yang beredar melalui seluruh tubuh. Adalah masuk akal apabila banyak orang mengganti kata energi itu dengan kata kehidupan. … Ia disebut ‘kekuatan kehidupan’, ‘energi kehidupan’, ‘jiwa’ atau elektromagnetisme. Para Taois menyebut kekuatan ini ‘Chi’.”[2].

Keberadaan energi Chi dipercaya melingkupi seluruh tubuh manusia dan berbentuk sinar sekeliling tubuh (Aura) . Sama dengan Cakra Yoga, di Cina dikenal pusat-pusat energi. Bagaimana manusia mengusahakan keseimbangan energi ‘Chi,’ menurut sistem penyembuhan Cina ada berbagai cara: (1) makanan & minuman; yang tertib dan sehat seperti vegetarian (tidak makan daging). Ini merupakan usaha pasif atau perilaku biasa sehari-hari.

Selanjutnya usaha aktif dilakukan melalui Tao-revitalisasi yang mencakup: (2) latihan pernafasan (chi kung); (3) pengolahan kekuatan pikiran/ batin; (4) latihan gerak tubuh (tai chi). Jusuf Sutanto mengemukakan bahwa Tai Chi Chuan adalah ibadat gerak agama Tao: “Tai Chi Chuan bukan hanya terbatas pada hal-hal yang merupakan pandangan, konsep-konsep atau angan-angan tentang kesehatan, tetapi dan yang terutama adalah jalan atau TAO untuk mencapai ketenangan dan kesejahteraan badan dan fikiran kita.”[3].

Dari uraian mengenai Taoisme dan Chi kita dapat melihat bahwa sama dengan agama mistik lainnya, Taoisme mengajarkan pengolahan Chi sebagai jalan keselamatan yang diusahakan manusia. Di Jepang, ‘Chi’ disebut ‘Ki.’ Zen Buddhisme adalah perpaduan Taoisme dengan Buddhisme membentuk aliran ‘Ch’an/Zen.’ Meditasi Zen ini dipraktekkan sebagai usaha penyangkalan diri/ pengosongan diri dan pencerahan serta jalan kelepasan/keselamatan dengan usaha sendiri. “Seperti yang dikatakan Sang Buddha, ‘Lakukanlah penyelamatan dirimu sendiri dengan rajin’.” [4]

Kekhasan Zen Buddhisme adalah penekanannya pada praktek meditasi sebagai jalan pencerahan, dan untuk mencapai pencerahan itu, dilakukan usaha mencapai jati diri (self) yang terdalam, dan bila ia mencapai pengertian akan kesadaran dirinya itu, berarti ia telah menyatukan diri dengan hekakat semesta atau realitas rohani semesta (menyatu dengan Tuhan).

Berhati-hatilah saudaraku, jangan sampai fikiran kita terkontaminasi memikiran dan keyakinan sesat sesat dibalik ajaran mistik chi/ki/zen.

I’ve tried about a million different things since I arrived in Korea and I haven’t had a bad meal yet.

I really  thought I was going to hate kimchi because I don’t really like cabbage and Sauerkraut is one of the most disgusting foods people eat in America.  But it’s actually really good.  I suppose it’s good that I like it considering that at every non-takeout place I’ve been to since I’ve been in Korea, even the places serving Japanese or Chinese food kimchi is served.

People keep asking me to describe it to them but kimchi tastes like kim chi and doesn’t really compare to anything out there.  It’s fairly spicy–the peppers kind of overwhelm the rest of the food.

It’s also the easiest food to eat with chopsticks I’ve ever come across.

Speaking of Kim chi the other day I had kim chichigae, a soup that puts kim chi in a red broth with pork and tofu.  It was delicious.  It will also blow your head off with how spicy it is.  I ate about half of a bowl of it and it was about all i could take for spices.

Koreans are incredibly proud of their food, even to the point of absurdity.  Many Koreans believe that kim chi cures diseases.  While it does appear to be quite healthy notions that it cures aids are even known to float around South Korea.  I know, it seems ridiculous to me too.

Zwei Freundinnen klagten über die Unfähigkeit zu „kommen“. Beide schlugen sich mit diesem Problem noch nicht seit immer, wohl aber seit langer Zeit herum. Beide litten darunter.

Das Energieblockaden dafür verantwortlich sein könnten, war nicht gleich meine erste Idee. Wir säumten das Pferd quasi von hinten auf. Aus anderen Gründen begannen wir Blockaden zu lösen und lösten scheinbar auch das Lustproblem. Und das war so…

Die erste Freundin löste sich ihre Blockaden alleine. Zu der Zeit wusste ich noch nicht, wie man sie ausstreicht. Ich erklärte ihr also, sie müsse sich überstrecken, dehnen und die Spannung halten. Das sie Blockaden am Rücken besaß gab ich ihr mit auf den Weg. Von Berufswegen war es ihr möglich, sich therapeutischen Strom anzulegen. Irgendwie lösten sich dadurch dann tatsächlich einige Blockaden und wohl auch die entscheidende für die Libido.

Was danach kam fand ich ur-komisch und sie wohl sehr quälend. Heftige Lust überkam sie und keine Mensch da zum abreagieren. Nun, sie fand einen Weg…

Ich sagte ihr später, dass sie Blockaden aus dem Jahr 1992 gelöst hatte. Sie überlegte, was damals nur gewesen sein könnte und gab mir dann aber Recht. 1992 war sie in eine Rangelei in einer Disko geraten und dabei rücklinks durch den ganzen Raum durch einige Stühle bis auf eine Tischkante gestrauchelt. Und ja, der Lustverlust fiel bei Lichte betrachtet in den damaligen Lebensabschnitt.

Die zweite Freundin litt bewusster an ihrer verloren gegangenen Libido. Sogar Beziehungen scheiterten daran. Allerdings schob sie das Problem auf Medikamente, die sie nehmen muss in deren Packungsbeilage auch Libidoverlust als Nebenwirkung steht.

Ich lokalisiere dennoch eine in Frage kommende Stelle am Rücken (gleiche Höhe wie bei der ersten Freundin) und löste dort die Blockade. Erstmal war nichts. In den darauf folgenden zwei Wochen veränderte sie sich aber. Sie war schrecklich kuschelbedürftig und flirtete mit jedem, überlegte sogar verflossene Beziehungen weider aufleben zu lassen. Ihr Flirten wurde bald ein leichtes flehen. Ich regte sie zur „Selbsthilfe“ an. Sie fand das blöd, das war bisher nie erfolgreich und überhaupt… Scheinbar war die erwachte Libido jedoch zu groß um eine Widerrede gelten zu lassen und siehe da… es klappte. Im Übrigen nimmt sie immer noch die Medikamente. An denen scheint es also niemals gelegen zu haben, viel mehr an einem schlechten Energiefluss.

Was soll ich sagen: Ein Thema, was mich sehr amüsiert. Kennen Sie Katzen, die im Sommer mautzend nachts über die Gehwege rollen? So ungefähr erging es den beiden Freundinnen, nachdem die entscheidenden Blockaden gelöst waren. Keine Angst, das legte sich bei beiden auch wieder und pegelte sich auf einem Normalmass ein, nachdem erst einmal kräftig nachgeholt wurde, was Jahrelang nicht ging.

Ich denke, Libidoverlust in ein weit verbreitetes und sehr frustrierendes Problem. Bekannte Wege, um Energiebahnen zu „verklemmen“ sind: Krankheiten, blöde Bewegungen, Unfälle, Sport, Traumata. Alles nicht unwahrscheinlich. Alles am unteren Teil des Rückens durchaus denkbar. Im Ergebnis sehr quälend für die Betroffenen aber Gott sei Dank zu klären.

It is always so nice to see Grace and her mom, Maura,  every year for her Christmas picture. This year we took them at Maclay Gardens.

The Skeptical Teacher’s recent post on this very topic got me to pondering ki once again. For those of you that are new to this blog, ki is a topic I visit on occasion.

When I used to break in competition I used to pscyh myself up by running through a few simple facts of human physiology and physics: Bone is denser than concrete or pine wood and force is mass times acceleration. If my targeting was on and I was calm I could generate the required speed to break stuff and I could do it consistently. Reverse time a few hundreds years when science was still lacking and I have to suspect that the best explanation of the day for some of these feats was ki.

Anyhow, here’s a video that captures some martial artists who still might believe in ki. While you watch it I challenge you to consider this: Might something else besides ki explain what you are seeing?

I always talk my way out of a fight.

Course now I’m old,
no glory in beating up an old guy,
so I don’t have to fight,
and I don’t even have to talk my way out anymore,
and I can be as rude as I want.

Ain’t old grand?

Anyway,
did you know that there are three arts
in the Butterfly Pa Kua Chang.
First in the simple matrix of it all.
The ten hand positions.
Simple as it is,
I have had a lot of people write,
and say thanks,
it made the difference for them.

Matrixing, you see, is simple,
it is organization.
A tidy mind is an intuitive mind.
you know?

Second,
is the teacup.
Man,
this is the fastest and most logical pa kua in the world.
Here’s the deal,
the flow of Pa Kua is matrixed.
Not just positioned,
but actually in trajectory.

Trajectory is the secret of the universe,
you know?

You can analyze the path
of that fist
that is just a whistlin’
towards your
not unhandsome mug,
and you can avoid, block, manipulate,
guide, smash, trash,
bash, kick, break,
do what you want,
and he ain’t go no clue.

Flow is that important.
In fact,
flow is absolutely neutronic.

Matrix is setting up the grid
by which you can analyze
all potentials.

Neutronics is the fact
of handling
just one,
one little one,
of those potentials.

Sounds easy.
It is easy,
it is overlooked,
but it has drastic effect on all who
finally come to an understanding
of what I am actually saying.

Makes you wonder why
nobody in the world understands this one point,
that I have to make a whole religion out of it.
Ah, well.
(sigh)

Anyway,
the third art
is the sort of matrix
of the classical eight animals.

There had to be some sort of a logic
in the creation of Pa Kua,
and that is what eight animals is all about.
Simple,
rather than confusing,
right to the heart,
and function,
of what pa kua is all about.

Do you know why I began obsessing on Pa kua?
Because there was a purity to it,
spoken of in circle,
obsessed on in private universes,
which universes are created
by walking the circle.

Oh, yes,
you walk the circle,
and the rest of the world starts going by by,
and you are left with a purity of you
that western society,
even transfigured by all the martial arts
that have hit these shores
does not create.

The universe of you.

I sometimes call it the
youniverse.

But it is real.
But you have to walk the circle to do it,
to find it.
And the circle should not be confusing.

So that’s the point of the course.

Okay,
So I’m pushing Pa Kua this week.
Why not.
Nothing wrong with that.

And,
shouldn’t you have a new art to work on
over Xmas vacation?

Or,
perhaps I should say it,
it is almost that time of year…
HanaKwanMass.
That’s right,
my little version of holiday cheer,

Cebu’s premier developer Cebu Holdings Inc. (CHI) was recently recognized by the Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) for its Corporate Governance system (for non-financial institution).

In the recent Best Annual Report Awards hosted by MAP, CHI was awarded Best in Corporate Governance. In the same awards, held in Manila recently, CHI also placed 3rd in the ranking of the nominated finalists.

According to CHI, the award came in timely, while the investor confidence is crucial and transparency of operations defines best practices of corporations.

Philippine Long Distance Co (PLDT) took home the top prize followed by Manila Water Co. Rounding out the top five are CHI subsidiary, Cebu Property Ventures and Development Corp. and Philippine Savings Bank. Forty-six companies out of the more than 240 publicly-listed companies in the country qualified for the awards.

CHI’s 2008 Integrated Annual and Sustainability Report covers the performance of the previous year on both financial and non-financial aspects. The report features the highlights of the company’s operations and revenues, and dedicated special sections on its environmental and social responsibility achievements…(continue reading)
