Il Congresso del comitato provinciale Arcigay Genova “L’Approdo” elegge presidente Valerio Barbini e un nuovo direttivo.

Si è svolto ieri sera il Congresso del Comitato provinciale Arcigay L’Approdo di Genova, che approvato a grande maggioranza il documento di programmazione triennale dell’associazione lesbica e gay cittadina e ha eletto una nuova dirigenza.

Valerio Barbini, 23 anni, già segretario organizzativo del Genova Pride, è stato eletto presidente. Sarà affiancato dalla nuova vicepresidente Chiara Fanti e da un consiglio direttivo composto da altre 7 persone.

“Sono molto soddisfatto della grande partecipazione al Congresso e alle attività associative, una partecipazione diversificata che vede nelle sue fila molti giovani, la crescita del contributo delle donne e la presenza della comunità gay sudamericana” – dichiara il neopresidente Barbini “Tutte queste identità sono rappresentate nel nuovo gruppo dirigente che vuole mantenere lo spirito di un’associazione aperta a tutti i soci e a tutte le socie, un vero approdo di fatto per la comunità LGBT della nostra città.”

cominciata bene, anzi benissimo… una delle più belle mattinate degli ultimi tempi… poi come al solito… ho aperto bocca e le stronzate sono uscite a raffica… ho ferito la mia pussolina dicendo una cosa non vera o meglio non sono riuscito a spiegarla… come mi capita spesso ultimamente, aggiungerei.
di conseguenza non si è solo rannuvolato ma ha cominciato a grandinare…

Woke up early today, 4 October 2009 to see what happened after continuous rains and heavy winds battering the area of Aparri, Cagayan after spending a night at the Ryan Hotel.

D-Day + 1

6:38 AM

Just a few meters from the hotel where we are staying.

Was surprised to see people up this early clearing their houses of fallen trees and debris brought about by Typhoon Pepeng the day before.

Went straight to the breakwater and was happy to see the sun peeking through rain clouds.

It was still raining but winds have been stable already.

Next stop was the Aparri Municipal Gym where residents staying near the breakwater sought help and shelter during the night before.

How resourceful can you get? Boys use card boards found inside the Aparri Municipal Gym to clean the floor.

I was surprised how prepared the local government was after seeing them distribute goods very early in the morning. Residents were also disciplined enough that they kept the gym clean even for just staying for a night. After they saw that the weather is starting to subside, many went back to their houses to go back to their normal life.

Since it was a Sunday, I decided to visit the church and saw that many attended the mass.

Residents of Aparri in Cagayan wear their Sunday’s best to attend a mass a day after Typhoon Pepeng stormed the area.

After surveying the town, I went out to see nearby towns particularly those towards Sta. Ana, Cagayan.

Most of the roads are cleared already of debris. It is amazing how fast the residents can clean their own area. While mostly went ok during the typhoon, there are also parts which became flooded due to heavy rains. Flooded areas are mostly agricultural lands but there are also residential ones.

I texted a friend about what I saw today. I said, “It amazes me how people accept what God gives to them and just move on. Today I woke up with people cleaning their houses, attending the mass with their Sunday’s best. I pause to think and realize how sophisticated people from the metro consider this typhoon a big and major problem while people residing in these provinces seem to just go on with their lives uneventful yet fulfilled and satisfied.”

SITTING PRETTY. A dog feels safe as it sits on the rooftop while the owner stays below at  M. Antiporda Hiway in the town of Buguey, Cagayan.

Even the snails had to evacuate and place themselves to higher grounds!

As a photojournalist I was fine with my photos. I don’t have a “Pullitzer” photo but still I was glad that Typhoon Pepeng didn’t do much damage as to personal properties and lives. Most of the damaged areas are agricultural lands but we can all save for that. The experience in covering this typhoon made me very much aware of how things can be simple yet happy and fulfilled. Things can be beautiful indeed…

Today’s post goes out with a Happy First Birthday to my daughter, Claire Caroline Wren.

Our Name of the Day was worn by Clio’s great-great-grandmother: Chiara.

I don’t know much about Chiara Nobile, but I do know that the name she was given in Naples didn’t transition well to New York.  At Ellis Island, the clerk called her Katie.  In official records, she is sometimes Chiara, and sometimes Chiarina, a diminutive form.

As Italian families often do, Chiara’s name was handed down to many of her American descendants.  They became Claire, Carina and eventually Clarina.  While honoring family mattered, and my forebearers fearlessly bestowed heirlooms like Filomena and Francesco, every one of my extended seems to have agreed on one thing: Chiara just plain didn’t translate.

They weren’t alone.  Despite plenty of immigrants who arrived with the name, Chiara has never charted in the US Top 1000.  Derived from the Latin clarus, she means clear or bright.  The thirteenth century noblewoman Chiara Offreduccio is remembered to history as Saint Clare of Assissi – St. Francis’ associate and the founder of the Order of the Poor Ladies, better known as the Poor Clares.

Plenty of related names have fared well:

• At #62 in 2008, the gently French Claire is at her highest point of popularity, though she easily qualifies as a classic;
• The austere Clare charts in the Girls’ Top 1000 most years.  Until the 1940s, Clare also regularly charted on the boys’ side;
• Clara was a Top 10 pick in the nineteenth century and a Top 100 mainstay right through Clara Bow’s reign as the It Girl.

But none of these sound anything like Chiara.  Pronounced with three syllables, kee AR uh is undeniably pretty.  Similar names have actually done quite well in recent years:

• Kiara appears to be a phoentic variant.  But her first appearance in the US Top 1000 was 1988 – the same year that Disney’s sequel to their smash hit The Lion King was released.  This time, Simba’s daughter is the hero of the tale, and her name?  Kiara, of course.  After peaking at #78 in 1999, she’s fallen to #241 as of last year;
• Kyara appears to be an ever more creative take on Kiara;
• Here’s where it gets fuzzy – Ciara might also be a simplified spelling of Chiara.  Or a riff on Kiara.  Or she could be related to the Gaelic masculine name Ciar – think Ciarán or Kieran, as well as the seventh century Saint Cera.  Or Saint Ciera.  Or one of several other spelling variants.  She’s usually given a two syllable pronunciation – KEER uh;
• There’s also Keara, Kira, Ceara, Kierra and more – though it is possible to link some of those variants to other names.  (Kira, for example, is often listed as a feminine version of Cyrus.)

And that’s  her drawback.  Style-wise, she fits in seamlessly with Isabella and Alexandra.  But she’s so very unusual that a Chiara born in 2009 might find herself answering to she AHR ah, CHEE rah and other manglings.

But if you can overlook that, Chiara could be an intriguing import for those seeking something unexpected.
