It’s our first day here in Chicago and weather’s great! For days it’s been extremely hot both in Kansas City and Chicago (I’ve been constantly checking its weather ever since we booked our flights) so I was really thankful that the weather’s pleasant during our trip. Since my appointment with the Philippine Consulate wasn’t until 3:00 pm, we gratefully accepted Corey’s offer to show us around and give us a ride in his awesome car, a Mercedes-Benz Sports car!

Our first stop was at the Chicago’s Famous Museum Campus, a lakefront park and home to the Adler Planetarium, the Shedd Aquarium, and the Field Museum of Natural History. There is obviously not enough time for us to visit all three museums so I picked the Shedd Aquarium for us to check-out.

While waiting in line to get our Aquarium tickets, I thought I’d give Chicago Style hotdogs a try but after seeing what’s on it (yellow mustard, chopped white onions, sweet pickle relish, dill pickle spear, tomato slices, pickled sport peppers, and a dash of celery salt) I changed my mind and chose a plain hotdog instead.

The Aquarium had several on-going exhibits during our visit. I was thrilled to know that one of them was the Wild Reef Exhibit which featured the Philippine coral reefs based on the Apo Island Marine reserve. I once again felt proud of the beauty of the Philippines!

I also liked the Jellies Exhibit. Jellies are so peaceful to look at. They mesmerized me with the graceful movement of their tentacles.

I love nature and I really enjoyed looking at and taking photos of the Shedd’s collection of aquatic animals. The Spider Crab was the one that really caught my attention. I have never seen such kind of crab. The Goliath Bird-eating Tarantula was also an eye-catcher. Creepy creatures. Tashi told me that if he ever sees one in our house we’d have to move! (And I was going to tell him I want one for a pet).

Before heading back to the car we took a short walk by the Lake Michigan. I was reminded of both Subic and Manila Bays, two of the most scenic bodies of water in the Philippines. I was just in the Philippines last April and Manila Bay was one of the places we checked-out. I must say that it has improved a lot. The place is cleaner and more tourist friendly and still a good place to catch a glimpse of the sunset.

Well, I decided to find out. Take me out to the ball game…..I sang to my handsome man in Chicago…..so off we went tickets in hand . There we were in Old Wrigley Field to watch the Cubs BATtle (lol!) the NY Mets! So come to Chicago and to the famous Ol’ Wrigley Field and not try the Famed Chicago Hotdog? Not for a chance ,would I miss that opportunity, but I thought I’d make it more fun. After all we were at a game…a competitive game. So I decided to hold my own competition: The Chicago-style Dog against the Bratwurst Sausage Sandwich, and find out which would win the Tasty Title!

Wrigley Field

The Chicago-style dog looks like a simple beef hotdog before you dress it up in it’s salad like costume…I had to Google it to find out what exactly I was supposed to smother it in because at this Ballpark, it’s dress your own!

From Wikipedia: A Chicago-style hot dog is a steamed or boiled, never broiled all-beef hot dog on a poppy seed bun, which originated in the city of Chicago, Illinois. The hot dog is topped with mustard, onion, sweet pickle relish (usually a dyed neon green variety called “Nuclear Relish”), a dill pickle spear, tomato slices or wedges, pickled sport peppers, and a dash of celery salt; sometimes, but not always, cucumber slices. The complete assembly of a Chicago hotdog is, like an Atlanta hotdog, said to be “dragged through the garden” because of the unique combination of condiments. Ketchup is not used on a Chicago-style hot dog.

Okay, I thought, I can do that. So we got the dog…tell you the truth it was seared not steamed or boiled, but hey I wasn’t cooking, just doing-up the looking of this dog. “Sautéed onions with that?” “Yes”, I said. Okay, my turn…a drizzle of mustard, sweet pickle- yeah green #40 definitely neon in color, pickles- check, diced tomato- that’ll do, spicy sport pickles- oh yeah, and a dash of celery salt. Sorry no cucs to be found here. Now there’s a looker- all sandwiched between my poppy seed bun (good thing I already took my life ins drug test, those poppy seeds could have screwed me up)

Next, I had to figure out how to fit a bite of this baby into my mouth and get a taste of all those flavors at the same time. Not easy…take a look!

Dog Bite!

My first impression: the roll is way too squishy to hold all those ingredients. It falls apart everywhere…someone ought to come up with a better bread for these things. Taste wise…….not bad. I wasn’t a big hotdog fan growing up and when I occasionally had one, I covered it in mustard and sauerkraut to cover up the funky taste of the added nitrites. Good thing is, with the Chic-style dog, all that smothering does the same thing here…I could only slightly taste those nitrites.

We were ready to move on, batter up: The Bratwurst Sausage Sandwich. So, same shape as the Chic dog, but a sausage, not a hot dog, and the bun has no poppies. A choice of sautéed onions and/or sauerkraut…hey, a bonus…so I went for both. And oohhh I found something else to put on it…some spicy stadium relish (without food dye) made of minced spicy pickled peppers and onions…sounded good to me!

The Brat

Bite time… Wow!…now this baby was juicy, I liked the thickness of it and although a bit greasier than the hotdog, definitely more flavorful. And I’m still a sauerkraut fan.

And I still think hotdog buns suck.

The Winner: The Bratwurst….by far…it wins the Tasty Trophy hands down…sorry Chicago dog. So next time I’m in town…. I’ll be rooting for the Cubs when they’re at Bat…… with a yummy Brat- in my lap!
