Now I’m starting to get worried about Canadia’s intentions towards the US. Maybe I should explain. According to this article, Canadian scientists have created a paralyzing ray akin to a phaser set on stun. Except for the fact that the stun setting needs a wee bit of tweaking before it stops actually killing the intended target. According to the article, the ray gun causes “instant flaccidity and empurplement.” I should state that empurplement does carry a much more scientific feel than Smurfify (even if Smurfify is more visually connotative). The only problem with said stun gun is that when the un-stun ray gun was used on the targets, many didn’t become un-stunned. (There isn’t any note on whether they became unempurpled).

So should we now be away of marauding hordes of RCMP streaming across our borders leaving in their wake a trail of lifeless blue bodies? Will we as Americans have to step up and develop our own stun/recoloring ray gun something like a quadripleting greenerator? What if al-Qaeda gets its hands on this technology and creates a back-pack bluing bomb? I shudder to think of Manhattanites walking around like extras from Avatar.

Granted, this is a bit of a far-fetched scenario given that the beam has only been tested on nematodes and relies on making sure the target has ingested a cocktail of chemicals beforehand. Of course, the Canadians are a wily and sly bunch. Who’s to say they could create a secret treaty with Fiji and start slipping the chemicals into shipments of Fiji Water. Why that could lead to the large-scale Smurfification of the entire yuppie populace of the United States.

Ne-am facut floricele, ne-am asezat in patul mare din dormitor (in care eu am rezervate doua locuri, sac!) si am dat drumul DVD-ului.

By Stephen Rhodes

It’s hard to imagine a more complete cock-up than the rollout of the H1N1 vaccine.

First, there was year-long campaign The Pandemic is Coming. Chicken Little, in scrubs, paraded on national television, warning about the dire consequencies of a pandemic.

And not much happened.

Over the summer it started all over again, withThe Pandemic is Really Coming, honest, and you need to be vaccinated.

Canadians were largely ambivalent until Evan Frustaglio, a 13-year-old hockey player from Toronto, died on the eve of the H1N1 vaccine becoming available. Demand for the vaccine jumped overnight, catching health officials by surprise. I guess they didn’t believe their own clippings.

Suddenly there was a shortage of vaccine and only high risk candidates could be vaccinated.

About 4,000 people die in Canada every year from seasonal flu.

“By the time all the dust has settled on H1N1, somewhere between 200 and 300 people will have died in this country,” says Dr. Richard Schabas, chief medical officer of health for Hastings and Prince Edward Counties in eastern Ontario. who was interviewed on CBC News The National last week. He says public health officials and journalists have overstated the importance of the swine flu.

Either way, the challenge for health officials will be to convince a growing number of skeptics about the importance of the H1N1 flu shot.

If the public-relations effort to this point is an indication of what’s to come, we are in for a long winter. Worse, health officials have lost public confidence and their seemingly ad hoc approach to communications, and mixed messages, aren’t helping.

Panic is driving the bus because there is not enough information, and I don’t mean daily media reports about the latest screwup, to make an informed decision.

Communications strategy? Apparently not.

What do you think?

(This column first appeared 6/18/05) Quick. In your best eyes wide shut fashion, check out the marke

(This column first appeared 6/18/05)

Quick. In your best eyes wide shut fashion, check out the marketplace and tell me which
direction is up. Which is down? It is harder than it sounds.

After ten years on a dizzy, vertigo-inducing rocket ship ride to incredible new heights, the G forces (gravity? greed? greenbacks? greenspan?) are finally getting to us. All we can sheepishly say into our headsets is: “Houston, we may have a problem.”

Here we are, standing on the precipice of a fantastic, dreamlike edifice of equity. We are on the roof of a skyscraper breathing rarefied air. Playing in the clouds. The planet of values we left behind a decade ago seems incredibly small and inconsequential. Things are going so well that maybe they are going too well.

We are worried that it will all go away overnight. We keep dreaming about falling. As a market, we have developed a bad case of acrophobia – fear of heights. It was ok climbing up the market ladder. We were so busy concentrating on the steps we didn’t have time to indulge our fears. Now that we are up here it’s different.

Our brains are working overtime sending warning signals to the pits of our stomachs in the form of the dreaded “what-ifs”. What-ifs are like mind viruses preprogrammed into our genetic code or at least imbedded as negative engrams into our psyches from early childhood. We’re capable of spinning out a zillion of them whenever the going gets fearful. What if interest rates go up? What if there is a bubble? What if I lose my job?

Imagine that you are minding your own business, riding a bicycle on the roof of the skyscraper. Your Mom pops her head out a window on the 97th floor and shouts: “Be careful, don’t fall.” The first thing you visualize is falling. The handlebars start to wobble and your balance goes. Suddenly riding a bike isn’t automatic. Instead you are watching a movie of yourself doing a long slow swan dive off the edge, straight into the abyss without a parachute.

When you are really high up, people always shout “Don’t look down!” Does anyone ever look down and only imagine themselves falling part way? Just one story? Nah. It is pretty much all or nothing. If you fall in your mind you usually hear the sound of a watermelon splattering on the sidewalk in your mind too.

When (not if) the market changes- if we are mindful, we will notice the market isn’t going up anymore. Our first overreaction will be that the market is going down and that the sky is falling. Even though not going up is not the same as going down, acrophobia is scary. And to quote one of my favorite malapropisms- “Been up so long, looks like down to me.”

I hate to break it to anybody but multiple offers, overbids, quick sales and sellers sitting
at the top of the heap in total control is not a normal market. It is an exceptional market that we have experienced for an exceptionally long time. Equity is not a God-given right. The market can giveth and taketh away.

But it’s ok if the market goes down a bit. If it tripled in the last ten is it so awful to give a
little bit of it back in the short term? If the market falls – it really doesn’t have to fall all the way, despite what Chicken Little or your Mother or your own Inner Phobic says.

Can our fear of heights really blow this whole thing up to the point where we actually believe the market can go from boom to bust in a day? The stock market went down 22% in one day in October of 1987 – can someone make a viable case that this is even possible in real estate?

When flying the space shuttle or standing on the edge of a tall building, quiet wisdom says don’t look up and don’t look down either. Instead pick a longer point on the horizon to focus on and keep your balance. Remember to breath and don’t forget to live. “The only thing we have to fear is the fear of fear itself.”

Story from the UK Telegraph.

Excerpt:

Last year Mr Gore’s venture capital firm loaned a small California firm $75m to develop energy-saving technology.

The company, Silver Spring Networks, produces hardware and software to make the electricity grid more efficient.

The deal appeared to pay off in a big way last week, when the Energy Department announced $3.4 billion in smart grid grants, the New York Times reports. Of the total, more than $560 million went to utilities with which Silver Spring has contracts.

The move means that venture capital company Kleiner Perkins and its partners, including Mr Gore, could recoup their investment many times over in coming years.

Few people have been as vocal about the urgency of global warming and the need to reinvent the way the world produces and consumes energy as Mr Gore. And few have put as much money behind their advocacy and are as well positioned to profit from this green transformation, if and when it comes.

This is taxpayer money, folks. Your money and my money.

I note that Watts Up With That links to a UK Telegraph story up on how climate change beliefs are now given the same status and protections as religious beliefs. Well, that’s what global warming is, only it’s less supported by science than some religions I know.

Al Gore knows less about science than my keyboard

Here’s a Washington Times article about Al Gore’s academic performance.

Excerpt:

Despite Mr. Gore’s image as star pupil, the kid most likely to be the first to raise his hand in class, it seems that Mr. Gore barely applied himself during his years as an undergraduate and graduate student. Indeed, his sophomore year at Harvard, The Post notes, was “the year Gore’s classmates remember him spending a notable amount of time in the Dunster House basement lounge shooting pool, watching television, eating hamburgers and occasionally smoking marijuana.” Please, take a moment to appreciate the scene painted in that one sentence.

In introductory economics, the only economics course Mr. Gore ever took, he received a C-, which goes a long way toward explaining his December remark that he would consider raising taxes should the economy fall into recession.

If the rudiments of fiscal policy proved to be too taxing for young Al, it should hardly be surprising that the self-appointed protector of the world’s ecosystems had almost as much trouble understanding the basic concept of biology. After all, Mr. Gore’s high school performance on the college board achievement tests in physics (488 out of 800 “terrible,” St. Albans retired teacher and assistant headmaster John Davis told The Post) and chemistry (519 out of 800 “He didn’t do too well in chemistry,” Mr. Davis observed) suggests that Mr. Gore would have trouble with science for the rest of his life. At Harvard and Vanderbilt, Mr. Gore continued bumbling along.

As a Harvard sophomore, scholar Al “earned” a D in Natural Sciences 6 in a course presciently named “Man’s Place in Nature.” That was the year he evidently spent more time smoking cannabis than studying its place among other plants within the ecosystem. His senior year, Mr. Gore received a C+ in Natural Sciences 118.

At Vanderbilt divinity school, Mr. Gore took a course in theology and natural science. The assigned readings included the apocalyptic, and widely discredited “Limits to Growth,” which formed much of the foundation for “Earth in the Balance.” It is said that Mr. Gore failed to hand in his book report on time. Thus, his incomplete grade turned into an F, one of five Fs Mr. Gore received at divinity school, which may well be a worldwide record.

He also dropped out of law school at Vanderbilt, not just divinity school. But his father was a liberal U.S. Senator, so things worked out OK for the pot-smoking silver-spoon leftist. As long as he avoids debates on global warming with actual scientists, he can keep laughing all the way to the bank. Recall the recent post about the Finnish car company backed by Al Gore getting a 529M US government loan. He needs your money to pay for the massive electricity bills he runs up while living in his huge mansion.

Global warming alarmism has nothing to do with science

Global warming is a myth sold to us by greedy, power-hungry socialists like Al Gore.

In 1943, as a comment on the war Walt Disney produced a cartoon version of the classic Chicken Littl

In 1943, as a comment on the war Walt Disney produced a cartoon version of the classic Chicken Little. In this version of the tale, Foxy Loxy is a cunning villain who uses a number of psychological tactics to drive a farm full of animals into a cave to be eaten. Slightly disturbing and quite political it was a not so subtle message about manipulation of the facts and emotions to gain compliance. The stimulus package, healthcare reform, climate change …. The sky is falling and if we don’t take action right away…. look familar? Watch the video – yeah it’s a cartoon but what a powerful message…..

A Special Thanks to Rosie O’Connor for pointing me to this cartoon in response to my post of ”Make Mine Freedom”.

Amazingly when you consider these two 1940’s cartoons, what we face today is nothing new to our great country. Except the difference this time is; there are many people in our government that want to ”fundamentally transform America”. Is that what you want? That is the question that you must ask yourself. If not, what are you doing about it? Many people are still walking around in a fog telling themselves that this can’t happen in America. Well it can and it is! This Congress and Administration are spending us into national bankruptcy by creating false crisis after false crisis. The stimulus has not fixed the economy, the climate is not changing due to man and healthcare may need some reform but does not require a complete overhaul. Yet we are being told; Run to the cave! Do you ever wonder why we suddenly need to do everything in such a hurry? Do you wonder what your country will look like if we enact the proposed climate change regulation and suddenly live in the land of carbon credits? (Look at Europe if you want to see how well that works).

America, wake up! This is bait and switch at its’ best. You voted for Hope and Change; not ropes and chains. You have been suckered. Instead of running like a flock of scared chickens to the false safety of the government cave, ask questions and demand answers! Time is running out to stop this dangerous government expansion. Ask yourself these questions:

Nine months into this administration did you expect:

The federal government to be in control of both the mortgage and the banking industries? That 19 of America ’s largest banks would be forced to undergo stress tests by the federal government which would determine if they were insufficiently capitalized, so they must be supervised by the government?

The federal government would be the largest shareholder in two US automakers: GM, and Chrysler? That the government would kick out the CEO’s of these companies and appoint hand-picked executives with zero experience in the auto industry and that executive compensation would be determined, not by a Board of Directors, but by the government?

That Barack Obama would appoint over 30 Czars, without congressional approval, accountable only to him, not to the voters and these Czars would have control over a wide range of US policy decisions? That there would be a Stimulus Accountability Czar, a Regulatory Czar, an Urban Czar, a Compensation Czar, an Iran Czar, an Auto Industry Czar, a Cyber Security Czar, an Energy Czar, a Bank Bailout Czar, and more than a dozen other government bureaucrats with unchecked regulatory powers over US domestic and foreign policy?

The federal deficit would be $915 billion in the first six months of the Obama presidency – with a projected annual deficit of $1.75 trillion – triple the $454.8 billion in 2008. Congress would pass Obama’s $3.53 trillion federal budget for fiscal 2010… That the projected deficit over the next ten years would be greater than $10 trillion?

The federal government would seek powers to seize key companies whose failures could jeopardize the financial system? That a new regulatory agency would be proposed by Obama to control loans, credit cards, mortgage-backed securities, and other financial products offered to the public?

The Obama Justice Department would order FBI agents to read Miranda rights to high-value detainees captured on the battlefield and held at US military detention facilities in Afghanistan? That Obama would order the closing of the Guantanamo detention facility with no plan for the disposition of the 200-plus individuals held there? That several of the suspected terrorists at Guantanamo would be sent to live in freedom in Bermuda at the expense of the US government?

President Obama would to use the FCC to try to dismantle conservative talk radio through the imposition of a new “Fairness Doctrine”? That he wants to curtail the First Amendment rights of those who may disagree with his policies via internet blogs, cable news networks, or advocacy ads? That most major network television and most newspapers will only sing his phrases like state-run media in communist countries?

States rights guaranteed by the Tenth Amendment would be under attack and the federal government would be attempting to gain sweeping new powers through regulation over policies currently under the province of local and state governments or voted on by the people? That Obama plans to control energy production, the environment, health care, education and the wealth of every US citizen?

The President to fly around the world apologizing for America and negotiate with thug dictators or madmen?

The president, the courts, and the federal government are ignoring the US Constitution and have seized powers which the founders of our country fought to restrict?

Not to mention: An additional 3,000,000 lost jobs and unemployment of 9.8%; 2,000,000 foreclosed homes this year and more people on food stamps then ever before.

Enough is enough! Is this the Change you want? Is this how our America ends? I say, Oh, Hell No! It is time to stand up and fight back. We can solve our problems through American ingenuity and the free market. You can’t spend your way to fiscal health. We must rely on American values, our national pride, our spirit of patriotism and our faith in our fellow citizens. America – it is time to restore our values and the American Dream.

Restore the Republic, The Sky is not Falling! Don’t run for safety to the Government Cave, Find your Safety in your Community with your Fellow Americans.

“The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed — and hence clamorous to be led to safety — by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.” - H.L. Mencken

“If you want total security, go to prison. There you’re fed, clothed, given medical care and so on. The only thing lacking… is freedom”. – Dwight D. Eisenhower

“The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government — lest it come to dominate our lives and interests.” — Patrick Henry

An alternative to popular faith Are you too young (or too old) to remember the fable about Chicken L

An alternative to popular faith

Are you too young (or too old) to remember the fable about Chicken Little, who believed the sky was falling down when an acorn fell on her head? She ran around in a panic, screaming “The sky is falling,” a now common idiom denoting an hysterical or mistaken belief that disaster is imminent.

Thus, have the debt hawks, aka Chicken Littles, been telling us for 30 years that the sky is falling, and that federal deficits will create disaster. Neither has occurred, or is likely soon, but failure of prediction neither embarrasses nor educates debt hawks.

We have arrived at a deficit of $1.4 trillion. In the past 30 years, the gross federal debt has grown an astounding 1,400%. The economy has grown, inflation has not been a problem, federal borrowing has not replaced private borrowing, countries have not refused to lend to us and because federal tax rates actually have gone down, no one’s grandchildren have paid for the $12 trillion gross debt.

The problem with debt hawks is they don’t understand money. They think of money as a scarce physical substance. It may be scarce to you and to me, but it no longer is scarce to the federal government, which since 1971, has created money at will, simply by creating T-securities from thin air, then exchanging them for the dollars it created earlier — also from thin air.

Visualize this. You go to a football game and the scoreboard reads 14 – 7. You might say one team “has” 14 points and the other team “has” 7 points. But in reality, the scoreboard merely has credited one team with 14 points and the other team with 7 points. The points are not physical things. No one “has” them.

Why is this important? Because in the economy, you and I are the teams and the government is the scoreboard. Points are not a real substance. Teams are merely credited with points. Money no longer (after we went off the gold standard) is a real substance. You and I, or more specifically, our bank accounts, merely are credited with money.

The scoreboard (government) never runs out of points. The government never runs out of the ability to credit you with dollars. The scoreboard does not need to ask either team to return some points so it can credit more points. Crediting a team with points does not reduce the scoreboard’s ability to credit more points. Crediting people or companies with money does not reduce the government’s ability to credit more money.

The scoreboard does not need to borrow points. The government does not need to borrow dollars. It as easily, safely and prudently can create dollars directly, rather than by creating and selling T-securities.

Imagine you decide to start a country from scratch. What is the first thing you will do? The people in your country need money, so you, as the government, will credit them with money. How? Perhaps by buying things from them. The people will give you material things and services; you will credit their bank accounts.

Debt hawks will call this exchange “deficit spending,” and they will demand that the people credit you, the government, back with some of the money. That’s called “taxation.” It is identical with giving the scoreboard back some points.

The scoreboard neither has nor needs points. The federal government neither has nor needs money. It never needs to be credited with money. It never needs to borrow money. It is the scoreboard. It can credit, endlessly.

The debt hawks continue to use obsolete, gold-standard thinking, from when money was a substance and was scarce to the government. Today, if the government wanted to give you $1 trillion, it simply would credit your bank account for $1 trillion, and debit its own balance sheets. Nothing physical would happen except the movement of a few electrons. The government can do this endlessly. In fact, last fiscal year, it did.

The government does not have a stash of money from which it spends. The government has no money at all. It merely credits bank accounts — yours, mine, foreign governments’.

Some may fear this can cause inflation, but the government now has absolute control over the value of its money through its control over both the supply and the demand (interest rates) for money.

The world changed in 1971, and the debt hawks have not yet understood that. Perhaps “hawk” is the wrong bird. More appropriate might be “Chicken Little.”

So I’m peacefully sleeping last night – right in the middle of a good dream – when

So I’m peacefully sleeping last night – right in the middle of a good dream – when ALL OF A SUDDEN I’m awakened as something hits my feet and jerks me awake!! At least now I know I have quick reflexes – and if there’s ever an intruder or a fire – I would be the first one RIGHT ON IT!! For as this object hit me – I sat right up in bed and screamed and said “WHAT WAS THAT!!!!!” And then scurried quickly to Greg’s arms to whimper like a baby. Well my dear sleepy husband, (did I mention that he does not wake up quickly for ANYTHING) who was startled by this sudden outburst of mine – and I need to add – GREATLY ANNOYED at me too – said, “It’s nothing – you must have just kicked something at the end of the bed” Not True. There was nothing there to kick – and even if there had been – I was sleeping peacefully – and lying very still (as I always do). Upon further inspection – and the light now turned on – we discovered that the large rod had come loose on our skylight – which is directly over our bed in the Master Bedroom. Yes that’s right – it had fallen down and luckily landed on my feet and NOT my head. If you catch my drift.

So I’m NOT insane after all. Hmmmmm. And I must admit that I felt very much like our dear “Chicken Little” who proclaimed that the sky was falling and NO ONE would believe him. I’m used to it. My dear husband is not quick to “jump” at every little thing – he is NOT excitable in the least – but very solid and stable and predictable. A real “glass half empty” kind of guy. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. He tends to be much more suspicious of things and people than I am – is more careful with finances and is much more perfect than I am – so it can’t be all bad. Me – I tend to be a “glass half full” or ALL THE WAY full. I trust way too much – get hurt WAY more often and am carefree and spontaneous.

I say, “the sky is falling!!!” Greg says, “not so – you’re just hysterical dear – it will all be better in the morning.”

Well it wasn’t much comfort last night. But there you have it. And I guess it’s nothing a few kisses and a sweet hug won’t cure. But next time the sky is falling in our bedroom – I hope that something lands on Greg.

God Bless

Republican National Committee Calls President Obama’s Award is ‘Unfortunate’ By EMILY FRIEDMAN Oct.

Republican National Committee Calls President Obama’s Award is ‘Unfortunate’

By EMILY FRIEDMAN

Oct. 9 2009

It’s not often that receiving the Nobel Peace Prize makes a winner the butt of jokes and the target of bitter criticism. President Obama didn’t even get to say “thank you” before his opponents began using the award to attack him.

Conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh called the committee’s decision a “bigger embarrassment than losing the Olympic bid, “and quipped, “He’s being judged on wishful thinking”…

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/conservatives-mock-president-obamas-nobel-peace-prize-award/story?id=8792365

Of course the far-right wing of the Republican party(neocons) don’t want to hear anything about real “peace”. Their version of peace is what Mr. Bush went to Israel in search of. On the occasion of Israel’s 60th birthday(Palestine’s 60th obituary year), Mr bush’s White House spoke of “prodding Israeli-Palestinian peace talks”.

The UK’s “Daily Mail” said:

“Doubt over Bush’s Middle East peace mission as he celebrates bond with Israel on its 60th birthday”.

It is no secret that the neocons don’t do “peace” too good. It is no secret that the neocons have done little or nothing in a professional manner. The neocons have avoided references to their work-performance; instead they focus on their rhetoric. And that is seen in the rhetoric based neocon “mouth pieces” that the “TELL AMERICA” press frequently makes available for American consumption.

The “CHICKEN LITTLE” approach to the neocons’ American management “contribution” does not greatly harm America as much as their actual national and domestic performance did. It really doesn’t take much talent to spew invectives. So, it really should come as no surprise that the two most virulent “mouth-pieces” never reference the good that the FAR RIGHT WING of the Republican party has done for America.

Neocon operatives provided cocaine drugs to minority neighborhoods in the quest for funds to fight a war in the jungles of South America. America’s CIA, early on, showed its respect for American citizens of “color” at that time. The drugs were sold in minority neighborhoods of Los-Angeles.

It is illegal for an American citizen, no matter the color, to purchase or sell cocaine on the streets of America. And the impact of that “drug selling” act is still felt in America today.

But the “lips” of the neocon “mouth-pieces” are “sealed” whenever reference to neocon “work-performance” is made:

You can’t MAKE a neocon “mouth-piece” talk about “peace” accomplishments of the neocons.

You can’t MAKE a neocon “mouth-piece” talk about WHEN America went into recession.

You can’t MAKE a neocon “mouth-piece” talk about WHY the neocons invaded Iraq.

You can’t MAKE a neocon “mouth-piece” talk about who outed Valerie Plame.

You can’t MAKE a neocon “mouth-piece” repeat Mr. Bush’s description of America’s Constitution – “[EXPLETIVE DELETED] piece of paper”.

You can’t MAKE a neocon “mouth-piece” talk about any “good government” that America experienced under the rein of the neocons – unless you call selling drugs to America’s gangs in minority neighborhoods – “good government”.

You can’t MAKE a neocon “mouth-piece” talk about America’s “ Keating 5” experience.

Some neocon “mouth-pieces” seems to have had trouble dealing with other social “topics”: alcohol, recreational drugs and prescription drugs.

It could be, perhaps, poetic justice if a neocon mouth-piece’s illegal drugs had a Los Angeles connection.

American individuals, by and large, have been able to manage their prescription drugs without having to answer to a judge. And while recreational drugs and alcohol have overcome the resolve of some Americans, one must wonder how it is that the far-right wing of the Republican party seems to have used a filter to select recreational drugs, illegal drugs and alcohol components for some of their “mouth-pieces”. How else could one explain the “collection” of neocon mouth-pieces? Could chance have produce such a collection?

It is illegal to sell or buy cocaine in America – unless perhaps you are an arm of the neocon U. S. government working under the “never to be investigated” rein of the neocons.

The neocons have done a good job of taking America to Sodom. Gomorrah might have been their next stop. Then America’s Christians might have had the full Sodom and Gomorrah treatment.

And in the tradition of Christians, perhaps, it won’t be rain – but fire next time. Either component of the “Christians/Jews” combination likely has the power to bring the “FIRE NEXT TIME”. But in typical neocon fashion, they might deny the outcome of their “fire” performance. They would likely blame others for their “fire” performance. And in typical neocon “mouth-piece” fashion, they could say either “minorities made them do it” or perhaps, even, the DEVIL make them do it.

The world has labored under “fifth grade” leadership way too long.

A word from the Editor: I was visiting the blogs of a friend of mine and it seemed that the topic of population control kept reoccurring. Now population control can come in all manner or guise, some times it’s a gradual erosion of civil liberties and sometimes it’s a haymaker right to your face, like the Patriot Act. No matter what from it comes in we should be very wary. Today’s topic? The Codex Alimentarius; big brother trying to control our food or honest attempt to provide safe food and vitamins to everyone?

Steak:

Who’s afraid of the big bad wolf? Not me. I’m hearing a lot of paranoia these days as we race towards 2012. And just like the years approaching 2000, it seems like all the crazies come out of the wood works, yelling that the sky is falling. Well chicken little, I’m not buying it

Fact is this whole Codex thing has been around for a lot longer than we think. It was established by an FAO Conference resolution in 1961 and a World Health Assembly resolution, WHA 16.42, in 1963. Its principle objective was to protect the health of consumers and to facilitate the trade of food by setting international standards on foods. Now that doesn’t sound all bad does it? Everyone eating the same standard of food all over the globe, that would solve a lot of problems wouldn’t it?
The Codex, put simply, is just a code of standards that covers all the main foods, whether processed, semi-processed or raw, in addition to materials used in the processing of food products.

Codex provisions concern the hygienic and nutritional quality of food, including microbiological norms, food additives, pesticide and veterinary drug residues, contaminants, labeling and presentation, and methods of sampling and risk analysis.

It’s a Global organization with many contributing members like France, Germany, Australia, Switzerland, The U.S, and Canada, just to name a few, contributing to all facets of the food industry from Labeling standards and Methods of Analysis and Sampling to examination of Pesticide Residues and Food Additives and Contaminants. So the idea that a small number of shadowy figures will be in charge of the world food supply is preposterous.

And that brings me to the main point. Why do we even need codex? If for generations we’ve been doing fine the old fashioned way. Why change things now? The answer is because were not doing it right. We all remember the tainted milk scandal of 2008, and it seems like every month there’s an outbreak of salmonella or listeriosis in tainted hot dogs or peanut butter.

I think I would be in favor of a little oversight from and accredited organization like the WHO. It’s plain to see the food and agro corporative executives, with their eyes on their disappearing 401k’s and the trying to get a piece of that sweet, sweet stimulus money, have far to much on their minds to be concerned with the health of the people who buy their products.

Eggs:

A few years ago I was doing some research on availability of vitamin supplements in the EU and I came across some very disturbing information in the form of a mysterious organization known as “Codex Alimentarius” or “Food Code” in Latin. The Codex is not a consumer protection agency, nor a human rights agency, nor a public health organization it is a trade-based commission, whose goals are clearly profit-focused. The Codex plans to bolster extreme opposition against natural forms of medicine and nutrition.
One standard, approved in 2005, called the Codex Alimentarius Vitamin and Mineral Guideline (VMG), has the power to ban many powerful vitamins and mineral supplements under the basis of for-hire studies. This means, the organization pays scientists and doctors to tell them what is most profitable. From there, more money will go to the pharmaceutical industry over natural remedies. One extreme measure even bans Vitamin C to doses of only several milligrams per dose. What sort of insanity can you expect if codex gets its way? ;

•	Dietary supplements could not be sold for preventive (prophylactic) or therapeutic use.
•	Potencies would be limited to extremely low dosages. Only the drug companies and the big pharmaceutical companies would have the right to produce and sell the higher potency products (at inflated prices).
•	Prescriptions would be required for anything above the extremely low doses allowed (such as 35 mg. on niacin).
•	Common foods such as garlic and peppermint would be classified as drugs or a third category (neither food nor drugs) that only big pharmaceutical companies could regulate and sell. Any food with any therapeutic effect can be considered a drug, even benign everyday substances like water.
•	Codex regulations for dietary supplements would become binding (escape clauses would be eliminated).
•	All new dietary supplements would be banned unless they go through Codex testing and approval.
•	Genetically altered food would be sold worldwide without labeling.

And, according to John Hammell, a legislative advocate and the founder of International Advocates for Health Freedom (IAHF)

“If Codex Alimentarius has its way, then herbs, vitamins, minerals, homeopathic remedies, amino acids and other natural remedies you have taken for granted most of your life will be gone. The name of the game for Codex Alimentarius is to shift all remedies into the prescription category so they can be controlled exclusively by the medical monopoly and its bosses, the major pharmaceutical firms. Predictably, this scenario has been denied by both the Canadian Health Food Association and the Health Protection Branch of Canada (HPB).”

What Codex does is takes the decision making out of the hands of federal or provincial legislators, and puts it in the hands of international banks and multinational pharmaceutical companies. Codex Alimentarius Commission ,which is a joint program of the World Health Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Codex’s history is extremely interesting because it is a kind of model for this type of transnational takeover. Codex seemed benign in the beginning, as most of these things do, because they seem to have no discernable forceful impact on regulations at home. That all changed with the adoption of NAFTA and GATT because each of those agreements contained within them Sanitary (Health) and Phytosanitary agreements. Suddenly the harmless old Codex became enforceable. Nowadays Codex guidelines carry a lot of weight because they are enforceable through the World Trade Organization. Enforcement is carried out by withdrawing other trade privileges conferred by the trade agreements.

Now why would our governments want this? Well because the natural health, prevention and supplement industries represent a growing sector of the economy. As profits on natural living increase, big pharmaceutical companies, as well as big-Agro businesses, are beginning to feel threatened. If they can enact stricter laws controlling supplements, consumers like you, will have less freedom to choose a pro-active approach to health and healing. In this sense, these laws could potentially endanger our ability to care for ourselves naturally.

I’m not sure about you but I think just about everyone either has a friend or, has themselves taken a vitamin at one time or another, and some people even take them every day, and report marked improvements in health and no one has ever related a “Vitamin poisoning” in fact until 1998 typically no deaths in the United States were associated with hypervitaminosis (vitamin overdose) and they were related to tainted iron supplements. As appose to the 450 deaths every year tied to Acetaminophen abuse. It seems to me the people behind the Codex have more than out collective health in mind.

Rules: Don’t take too long to think about it. Fifteen books you’ve read that will always stick with you. First fifteen you can recall in no more than 15 minutes. Here are mine: (IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER)
1. Romeo and Juliet (nope I don’t care if it’s a play either. It’s still inspirational and sticks with you. For that matter almost any Shakespeare.)
2. Edgar Allen Poe (Tale Tale Heart)
3. Fahrenheit 451
4. Animal Farm (Thanks to my eight grade teach for this and the one above)
5. Beowulf
6. Canterbury Tales (Yes I love Chaucer)
7. Servant of the Bones (Anne Rice)
8. What ever was the first book of Kathy Reicht’s – I’ve read them all pick one
9. chicken little (no rules say they can’t be children’s books)
10. Dear Mr. Henshaw (Beverly Clearly)
11. The Good Earth (Pearly S Buckly)
12. Tom Sawyer (Mark Twain)
13. The Richest Man in Babylon (George S. Clason)
14. Oliver Twist (Charles Dickens)
15. Scary Tales to Tell in the Dark (Alvin Schwartz) I own the triology

I got this from a friend on Facebook but I enjoyed looking at everyones answers so much that I thought I’d try it over here. I also thought of Phantom Tollbooth after the fact but still a good one. If you can’t think of 15 just give me what you got.

You would think by reading the posts on certain message boards that the Northwestern football season is already an unmitigated disaster. Northwestern lost a winnable non-conference game?!

That NEVER happens! (Citrus Bowl)

NU lost their Big Ten home opener?!

Surely a sign of disaster! (Sun Bowl)

Give me a break. Yes, NU’s schedule to start the season looked ridiculously easy. Yes, some people (myself included) expected a 6-0 start.

But guess what everyone? The goal is not to win the national title. The goal is not necessarily even the Rose Bowl. Face the facts, NU has not been to back to back bowl games since the mid-90’s and they’ve won ONE bowl game in their history.

The goal is to do both this year, and that goal is very much alive.

If Northwestern beats Purdue this Saturday, they’ll start the Big Ten season with a 1-1 record.

Last year, they also started the Big Ten season at 1-1, they finished in the Alamo Bowl.

Last season was the first time since the 1960’s that NU went undefeated in non-conference play. This year, barring an absolute disaster against Miami of Ohio, they’ll go 3-1 in non-conference competition, not a bad record at all.

And guess what? The remaining schedule is STILL really easy. Purdue, Miami of Ohio, Michigan State (currently sitting at 1-3), Indiana, and Illinois are all very winnable games. A win over Wisconsin wouldn’t shock me either, and let’s face it, NU loves playing at Kinnick Stadium, so even a win versus Iowa isn’t out of the question. Heck, NU always plays Penn State tough in Evanston, so why can’t they run the table?!

Okay, that’s a little bit overboard, but so is everyone predicting a 4-8 season or some other horrific outcome.

Concerned about the defense? NU had the worst defense in the country in 2005 and went to the Sun Bowl. Concerned about the lack of a running game? So far that hasn’t really hindered NU’s offense.

My prediction before the season was that NU would finish 8-4, and darn it, I’m sticking with that. I wanted 9 wins…that looks highly unlikely, but 8 wins is still very doable.

Of course if they lose to Purdue then I’ll be running for cover from the falling sky just like the rest of you.

The weather, the gambling action, the leather and the chrome all attracted higher attendance for Str

The weather, the gambling action, the leather and the chrome all attracted higher attendance for Street Vibration 2009. Maybe the lack of hype or the “sky is falling” press about impending club-on-club violence helped? There was a positive “vibe” in the city which I’ve not observed in a couple years. I ask and didn’t hear much from street vendors about the current recession is the new normal… yada, yada.

As I roared out of Reno yesterday on my way home I thought about this video — “Rockin’ The Beer Gut” — a bit of truth wrapped up in a humorous ditty that tells us even though we have dangerous unemployment and we may not be perfect, don’t work on Wall Street making millions, it doesn’t mean we can’t have fun! And fun at Street Vibrations we had! The 546 mile ride back gave me plenty of time to try and recall what stood out from years past — there was that monster jump at the Grand Sierra Resort by Ryan Capes who broke the standing 254 foot (ramp-to-ramp) record and then turned around and broke his own new record by clearing 316 feet on a motorcycle, then there were the Motorcycle “Clubs,” more than a dozen all getting along, but mostly it was about the scenic journey on two-lane tarmac with green mountains to sage brush desert which was fantastic. The weather (mid-90’s) didn’t hurt and put the FUN back into the experience. As well as tens of millions to the local economy. I certainly left my small share!

The event didn’t pass without incidents, however. More riders often means more accidents. First, there were several motorcycle accidents on US 395 related to the set up for the monster jump. Then there was a lady who was on the Harley-Davidson demo bike ride and wrecked. A couple on U.S. 50 who crashed just east of Spooner Summit which sadly resulted in the only fatality at the event. Then on our ride back from Virginia City we came upon a motorcyclist who struck a wall on Griner’s Bend, a sharp curve at the south side of Virginia City on State Route 342. It turned out that 6 people were injured Friday afternoon, two of them seriously, in four separate accidents all involving loss of control. The Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) reported there had been 18 motorcycle accidents over the course of the rally weekend.

The final attendance tally and the economic $$ impact will be out in a few days, but from my perspective it seemed like more people and the street crowds were bigger. Not as record breaking as a few years ago, but none the less significant. I plan to provide an trip chronology and will post it up over the next few days.

UPDATE: September 29, 2009 — AP is reporting that there were 72 arrest made at Street Vibrations even though LEO consider the event largely peaceful. Most of the arrests were alcohol related, including 23 for public intoxication. The police issued 77 traffic citations and responded to six reports of stolen motorcycles.

“OH SHE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON LONGER…”

  “WHY DID HE GO HOME!?”

This is a topic that I think many viewers can discuss and be passionate about…

Well, since I have my own blog, I’m going to tell you guys the people that should have stayed longer! Obviously this is in my own humble opinion (yeah I know I can write IMHO, but I love typing)

Felicia Barton ( Season 8 )

So talented. Easily Top 10 material

What a roller coaster she was on. First she’s eliminated the week before the semi-finals. THEN Joanna “plant” Pacitti gets kicked out for many reasons according to wikipedia:

“…that Pacitti has “very personal connections” to Michelle Young and Roger Widynowski, two executives that work at the Los Angeles office of American Idol’s 19 Entertainment.”

So then Felicia gets the call that she is BACK in the competition. I got ecstatic because she was amazing in her audition, and we also found her youtube video of her singing Alicia Keys No One. Check it out…

I KNOW RIGHT! Here’s here audition too….

Then she performs on semi-final night, and she fell victim to the new format that I believed they used in earlier Idol seasons. If she had been given a chance to build a following she definitely could have at LEAST made the top 10! Guaranteed! Copy/paste http://www.rickey.org/?p=12319 to see her semi-final performance!

Asia’h Epperson (Season 7)

Should have been Top 12 easily

Who can forget Asia’h Epperson? Her story during the auditions did not leave a dry eye in the house. Days before her audition, her father passed away. How can someone still go on and audition after a tragedy like that. To top it off she changes her audition song to “How do I live.” Wow. I still get chills thinking about what she went through.

I honestly don’t know how she didn’t make the top 12 over Kristy Lee Cook, Chikezie or Amanda Overmeyer! Her storyline and voice was superior to all of them. I think it was Simons criticism that did her in. Her final performance was “I wanna dance with somebody” by Whitney. Her performance has aged really well. Sometimes a performance you’re in love with doesn’t age well (anything by Constantine comes to mind or Danny Gokey), but hers is really good. Check it out here…

Constantine Maroulis (Season 4)

Easily should have been Top 3 of Season 4

Yes, his performances haven’t aged well, but he should have come in 3rd this year! He’s more memorable than anyone else besides Bo and Carrie. Even though I preferred Constantine to Bo. Here’s his best performance, and one of the best in Idol History! Bohemian Rhapsody…

A.J Tabaldo (Season 6)

Easily Top 12 talent! What happened?

Honestly, his exit bugs me the most. He received universal praise after his performance of “Feelin’ Good” and he still went home. I’ll never forget, both he and Leslie Hunt sang the same song, the same week, and BOTH went home. Hence why I was a little nervous when Adam Lambert sang it (MAYBE thats why he didn’t win….oooh). Check out A.J’s performance here…

Danny Noriega ( Season 8 )

I can name 3 Idols that should have left instead of him

One of the biggest divas (meant as a compliment) ever on the show. With one of the better voices, period. I don’t really know what else to say. You don’t really expect the voice that comes out of his mouth. Here’s his audition…

Then this is the week he was eliminated. I thought he showed a ton of personality. He sang it well, put his own spin on it. I thought the banter between Simon and him would help, but I guess it didn’t. He easily should have been in the top 12 at least.

Honorable Mention!

Paul Kim (Season 6)- He was the first to be eliminated in Season 6. Tons of people should have gone ahead of him. Plus he’s Asian! Gotta rep for my Asians!

Sway Penala (Season 5)- Had one of the better auditions EVER! I can’t find the clip, but he killed Superstar! It was just song choice that did him in, and little camera time. Also Chicken Little Kevin Covais went through instead of him! REALLY? Grandmas voting multiple time.

There seems to be no escape from the aching feeling in the pit of my stomach, that the relatively immediate future holds in store life altering, perception shattering events for collective humanity. The feeling is not new, it arises from a long planted seed, and has been nurtured by copious amounts of reason and observation. I certainly am an emotional person, constantly attempting to fine tune my intuition. I am however no stranger to logic and other more mundane yet indispensable tools at getting to the heart of any subject. Discernment in such matters often leaves ones head spinning in the seas of overloaded information trying to decipher the truth, where everyone is in the know. The truth is there is none, reality is dynamic and the universe is one step beyond logic. One of the most dominant ego cogs of self delusion is the deep subconscious need to be, “in the know”. We all want to have the world around us pinned down and properly allocated. Segmented, labeled and explained away until the sky stops falling and things stay in their place. Reality knows better, reality knows enough to perceive it’s own illusory nature and lack of permanence, the sky is always falling!

It’s no exaggeration that Chicken Little was wildly paranoid, or that the end times have been impending since the begin times, but that is an excuse not readily capable of wiping sweat from the brow from anyone remotely aware of the world around them. I’m referring to those of you whom have looked up from your own false ego long enough to grok my allusions. I mean not to say whatsoever that the sky is actually falling in a remote sense of apocalyptic metaphor, if there is one thing I trust however blindly, it is that life will go on, just perhaps not as we know it.

What prompted me to externalize this train of thought at this particular instance, is the way I continue to bury my head in my own hopes and dreams for the future, aspirations that run on an operating system that may soon be defunct. As I breath in the air of uncertainty I challenge myself perpetually to come to terms with it, to understand at the root level and brace myself to walk the fire. These hopes and schemes of mine and us all are the very fluid within the Artificial Womb. Over the years I have referred this concept to many, among other pertinent ideas found within it’s source document. I will quote it here for the persistent.

“From the time a person leaves its mother’s womb, its every effort is directed towards building, maintaining, and withdrawing into artificial wombs, various sorts of substitute protective devices or shells.”

I have noted over the years that this is why the helm of humanity is blindly left to those whom take it. Grossly we all just want our little sheltered worlds of hopes dreams and aspirations, we are all undiscovered rock stars and secret masters of whatever subterfuge we delude ourselves with. But as the western world view sets itself up for hypocrisy with it’s dualistic view, so do I. I have come to terms with this fact based on my observations of the essential unity masked behind apparent polarity. In this way, hypocrisy and self delusion may be an essential proponent for our experience of reality altogether.

Life is a ride and the slow graduation we have been clicking upward, strapped into our own little cars of this roller coaster. It’s bound to come crashing downward displacing the pits of all our stomachs, and tearing the sky down with it. I look forward to riding it out, but I must ask myself the question… “Shouldn’t I be stocking water and canned goods?”

abc NEWS politics

Sept. 12, 2009

Conservative activists, who organized a march on the U.S. Capitol today in protest of the Obama administration’s health care agenda and government spending, erroneously attributed reports on the size of the crowds to ABC News.

Matt Kibbe, president of FreedomWorks, the group that organized the event, said on stage at the rally that ABC News was reporting that 1 million to 1.5 million people were in attendance. …

Hopefully, if Chicken Little does look up, he won’t report what he sees to Freedom Works. There may not be a validation process before the “news” is spoken on stage.

Neocons successfully worked that “sky is falling” trick back in 2003 when “sixteen words” – spoken durning a President’s State of the Union Address – persuaded America’s Congress to sign-off on a “wild goose” chase to Iraq. The goal, at least in part, was to find weapons of mass destruction(WMD’s).

WMDs were never found but the WMD “belief” was not publically retracted by the source of that belief. It appears that “the moving finger wrote” – and having written – moved on – and no force on earth could call it back to cancel even half a line.

Back in the day, estimates of crowd size, were frequently given by multiple sources(authoritative). A police estimate of crowd size was not unusual. And as one might expect – rarely did the estimates match.

How would the conservative Republican Congressman from South Carolina “mouth” the truth value of the 1.5 million number – YOU LIE?

We received the link to this movie from Brian Wong and here is his explanation: “A video that shows us what we can learn from the original “Chicken Little” story from Walt Disney (1947).
I don’t know about you but I’m sick and tired of the media dishing out negative energy. I decided to create this video to hopefully put some positive energy back into our world.” We totally agree with this guy. Enjoy!

President Obama gave “A Message of Hope and Responsibility for America’s Students”

President Obama gave “A Message of Hope and Responsibility for America’s Students” from Wakefield High School Arlington, Virginia. The speech was available online for parents and teachers to read in advance of the public address.

Students who watched the speech said their were inspired by the fact that President Obama said that education was a great equalizer. One young woman interviewed on the MacNeil Lehrer report of PBS said that she was encouraged by President Obama’s claim that no matter what type of financial situation you were born into, through getting a good education, a student could get a job equal to those students who were born into more fortunate financial circumstances. The great equalizer–getting a good education and applying it to your life.

President Obama’s Message for America’s Students September 8, 2009

Even Jim Greer, Chairman of the Republican Party in Florida, said that after he reviewed the speech online, he would let his kids watch it. Ironically, the sticking point for Greer was the lesson plan that previously had urged students to write a letter to President Obama about what they wanted to do for America. Did Greer object to President H.W. Bush’s claim for students to also write him about a similar topic when he spoke directly to school children during his administration?

It is clear that President Obama’s speech was something that was meant to inspire young students to stay in school and to realize that you do not have to be perfect, that having some failures in your life can actually be the cause of ones determination to succeed.

How encouraging to students that their president took time out to speak directly to them about their present and future.

Students react positively to the President’s speech:

The Non-controversial Speech plugged as “Controversial” by right-wing political pundits with their own hidden agenda

So it turns out that all the pundits gone wild about President Obama’s speech were little more than frantic squawking similar to the children’s fable about Chicken Little running around crying that the sky was falling when it was not falling.

Chicken Little: "The Sky Is Falling!"

Has anyone bothered to look into the potential hidden agendas of the people attacking President Obama for his efforts to encourage youth of America to stay in school? I hope that Americans stop falling for the constant attempts by certain politicians and media personalities to attack the integrity of President Obama with baseless criticisms, mean-spirited rumors and racist innuendos.

Has anyone looked into the obvious and unstated agreement between the Republican party and their media propagandists to criticize every single action by President Obama on ideological grounds, including how he happens to throw a baseball and the fact that he and his family have a garden. These are clearly trivial matters that indicate the extreme measures that Republicans will go to in order to denigrate this president.
