Judul : Doggy Style – Anjing Punya Gaya
Penulis : Jane May
Penerbit : PT Gramedia Pustaka Utama
Tebal : 336 Halaman

Sinopsis:

Namaku Miles. Bukan, bukan Miles Davis, Miles saja. Walaupun aku suka ikut bernyanyi sih kalau Bob menyetel lagunya. Melolong, tepatnya, bukan bernyanyi.

Tapi.. novelnya ngga sebagus sinopsisnya!

Swati Kaushal’s debut chicklit novel is quite a breezy read. With things getting a little high-strung at work, this book provided much-needed comic relief for me .The protagonist 29-year-old,Minal Sharma has a hyperactive conscience, and a vivid imagination. Armed with an MBA and a career as a product manager with a FMCG, Minal has a lot going for her. She also has to grapple with her mother’s overenthusiastic attempts at settling her down.. The author manages to infuse just the right dose of humour and weaves an interesting tale around the cakes that Minal’s company makes a foray into.. Pushy mom who dreams of the perfect arranged marriage for her daughters, suitors : a wild radio jockey and staid, boring oncologist, single small town single woman in the corporate world eager to make it big,is ambitious, works hard and unwinds by partying equally hard : this book has all the essential ingredients of a chicklit. The ironic tone, the wry self-mocking humour of the author is present in every episode, whether personal or professional. This is what sets the book apart from the run-of-the-mill novels.I’d give it a thumbs up.

Outside the house where Wexford investigated his first case – a woman found strangled in her bedroom – he noticed a short, muscular man wearing a scarf and walking a dog. He gave Wexford an unnerving stare. Without any solid evidence, Wexford began to suspect that this man – Eric Targo – was the killer. Over the years there are more unsolved, apparently motiveless murders in the town of Kingsmarkham and Wexford continues to quietly suspect that the increasingly prosperous Targo – van driver, property developer, kennel owner and animal lover – is behind them.

Now, half a lifetime later, Wexford spots Targo back in Kingsmarkham after a long absence. Wexford tells his long time partner, Mike Burden, about his suspicions, but Burden dismisses them as fantasy. Meanwhile, Burden’s wife, Jenny, has suspicions of her own. She believes that the Rahmans, a highly respectable immigrant family from Pakistan, may be forcing their daughter, Tamima, into an arranged marriage – or worse. After the success of the Normandy invasion, the Allied commanders are buoyantly confident that the war in Europe will be over in a matter of weeks, that Hitler and his battered army have no other option than surrender. But despite the advice of his best military minds, Hitler will hear no talk of defeat. In mid-December 1944, the Germans launch a desperate and ruthless counteroffensive in the Ardennes forest, utterly surprising the unprepared Americans who stand in their way. Through the frigid snows of the mountainous terrain, German tanks and infantry struggle to realize Hitler’s goal: divide the Allied armies and capture the vital port at Antwerp. The attack succeeds in opening up a wide gap in the American lines, and for days chaos reigns in the Allied command. Thus begins the Battle… (read an exerpt)

Aimée’s childhood friend, Laure, is a policewoman. Her partner, Jacques, has set up a meeting in Montmartre with an informer. When Laure reluctantly goes along as backup, Jacques is lured to an icy rooftop, where he is shot to death. Laure’s gun has been fired, gunpowder residue is found on her hands, and she is charged with her partner’s murder.

The police close ranks against the alleged cop killer. Aimée is determined to clear Laure. In doing so, she encounters separatist terrorists, Montmartre prostitutes, a surrealist painter’s stepdaughter, a crooked Corsican bar owner, and learns of “Big Ears”—the French “ear in the sky” that records telephonic and electronic communications—which the Security Servicesmonitor. Identifying Jacques’ murderer brings her closer to solving her own father’s death in an explosion in the Place Vendôme years earlier. It still haunts her. It starts with a phone call that reopens a painful chapter in Jake Tiptree’s past. After years of delay, the man who murdered Jake’s mother is finally scheduled to stand trial—until he vanishes into thin air. Maybe the only thing worse about Ozzie Campbell’s disappearing is that Jake has a terrible foreboding of just where he’ll turn up next. With her family away, Jake had hoped to savor a few days of unaccustomed solitude. Now, without warning, her cozy, well-loved home in Eastport, Maine, seems more like a death trap ready to snap shut. Suddenly Jake feels that her house—and her life—has far too many windows. And in any one of them she might see the face of her killer. Virgil’s always been known for having a somewhat active, er, social life, but he’s probably not going to be getting too many opportunities for that during his new case. While competing in a fishing tournament in a remote area of northern Minnesota, he gets a call from Lucas Davenport to investigate a murder at a nearby resort, where a woman has been shot while kayaking. The resort is for women only, a place to relax, get fit, recover from plastic surgery, commune with nature, and while it didn’t start out to be a place mostly for those with Sapphic inclinations, that’s pretty much what it is today.
Which makes things all the more complicated for Virgil, because as he begins investigating, he finds a web of connections between the people at the resort, the victim, and some local women, notably a talented country singer, and the more he digs, the move he discovers the arrows of suspicion that point in many directions, encompassing a multitude of motivations: jealousy, blackmail, greed, anger, fear. And then he discovers that this is not the first murder, that there was a second, seemingly unrelated one, the year before. And that there’s about to be a third, definitely related one, any time now. And as for the fourth… well, Virgil better hope he can catch the killer before that happens.
Because it could be his own. (Virgil Flowers Series #3)

For two years Plouffe worked side by side with Obama, charting the course of the campaign. His is the ultimate insider’s tale, revealing both the strategies that delivered Obama to office and how the candidate and campaign handled moments of great challenge and opportunity. Moving from the deliberations about whether to run at all, through the epic primary battle with Hillary Clinton and the general election against John McCain, Plouffe showcases the high-wire gamesmanship that fascinated pundits and the drama and intrigue that captivated a nation.

New York / Edward Rutherfurd
Rutherfurd celebrates America’s greatest city in a rich, engrossing saga that showcases his extraordinary ability to combine impeccable historical research and storytelling flair. As in his earlier, bestselling novels, he illuminates cultural, social, and political upheavals through the lives of a remarkably diverse set of families.

As he recounts the intertwining fates of characters rich and poor, black and white, native born and immigrant, Rutherfurd brings to life the momentous events that shaped New York and America: the Revolutionary War, the emergence of the city as a great trading and financial center, the excesses of the Gilded Age, the explosion of immigration in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the trials of World War II, the near-demise of New York in the 1970s and its roaring rebirth in the ’90s, and the attacks on the World Trade Center. For thirty-one-year old Cornelia Brown, life is a series of movie moments, and “Jimmy Stewart is always and indisputably the best man in the world, unless Cary Grant should happen to show up.” So imagine Cornelia’s delight when her very own Cary Grant walks through the door of the hip Philadelphia café she manages. Handsome and debonair, Martin Grace sweeps Cornelia off her feet, becoming Cary Grant to Cornelia’s Katharine Hepburn, Clark Gable to her Joan Crawford. Meanwhile, on the other side of town, eleven-year-old Clare Hobbes must learn to fend for herself after her increasingly unstable mother has a breakdown and disappears. With no one to turn to, Clare seeks out her estranged father, and when the two of them show up at Cornelia’s café, the lives of Cornelia and Clare are changed in drastic and unexpected ways. Amid ancient redwoods and sun-dappled reeds, the Perdido River runs clear and cold from the mountains of Soledad County to the blue Pacific. A wildlife refuge and a pristine recreational area, the river brings tourists to the old lumber town of Cape Perdido…and flows through the memories and hearts of the rugged people who have settled there since the Gold Rush days.

Now that is about to change. An out-of-state corporation wants to pump the river nearly dry and float the water to southern California’s thirsty cities in huge rubber rafts. With lobbyists, lawyers, and dirty tricks, the company intends to get what it wants-any way it can.

Against this corporate Goliath, a community protest group and four unusual individuals are drawing a line in the sand. Flying in from New York City, ecologist Jessie Domingo hopes to grab headlines for her cause. Environmentalist Joseph Openshaw has come back to the home, and the secrets, he left behind decades ago. His former lover, local restaurateur Steph Pace, fears both the emotions and the ghosts arriving to haunt her. And old man Timothy McNear, owner of the defunct mill that once employed most of the town, silently broods about the sins he has hidden for too long. As the attacks mount, it is the ninth target that pulls Alex into a case that is quickly spiraling into deadly territory — where justice is no longer enough. In the half-built skeleton of a monstrously vulgar mansion in one of L.A.’s toniest neighborhoods, a watchman stumbles on the bodies of a young couple–murdered in flagrante and left in a gruesome postmortem embrace. Though he’s cracked some of the city’s worst slayings, veteran homicide cop Milo Sturgis is still shocked at the grisly sight: a twisted crime that only Milo’s killer instincts–and psychologist Alex Delaware’s keen insights–can hope to solve.

When Stone very nearly loses his life after being blindsided at a local bar, he realizes that the young man he’s been hired to track may have good reason for not wanting to be found. So Holly returns to her hometown of Orchid Beach, Florida, where she had been police chief for many years. But a very unpleasant surprise awaits her. Many years earlier, Holly and another female army officer had brought charges against their commanding officer for sexual harassment, attempted rape, and rape. Holly had managed to fight him off, but the other woman, a young lieutenant, had not. The officer in question was acquitted of all charges, and has also left the army-for a job as Orchid Beach’s new police chief.

A young cousin whom she’s never met arrives from Kansas City to work on a political campaign; a nun who marched with Martin Luther King Jr. dies without revealing crucial evidence; and on the city’s South Side, people spit when she shows up. Afraid to learn that her adored father might have been a bent cop, V. I. still takes the investigation all the way to its frightening end. (V.I. Warshawski Series #13)

Book 1 of the Fallen series.

About This Book:

Seventeen year old Luce is sent to a reform school, Sword & Cross, following a terrible tragedy involving her ex-boyfriend Trevor. The details of what happened that night are hazy and Luce is struggling to come to terms with the idea that she might have been responsible.

On her first day at Sword & Cross Luce meets Cam, a good-looking, edgy guy with piercing green eyes and dark hair and she feels strangely attracted to him despite the fact he is not usually her type. However Cam is not the only guy to have attracted her attention. Daniel is captivatingly handsome, almost too perfect, Luce feels instantly drawn to him, as if she already knows him, but she would never forget someone who looked like that, would she?

An epic battle between Heaven and Hell, with echoes of Paradise Lost, Fallen is a story of a love doomed to fail over and over again.

My Take On This Book:

The story telling quality is good but not that compelling. I give it a 4 out of 5. The story itself is quite insubstantial in my opinion. A young girl running around in school with her guilt, insecurity and boys. And that’s it! I think that earned a 2 out of 5. The book ends with a cliffhanger which is never good in my book. Though it kind of closes the story, it is also a beginning of the next book. I give it another 2 out of 5. However it made the second book in the series look like a very good read indeed. And I wouldn’t presume to judge the entire series by this book alone. In my experience, the first book in a series is usually not the best one. Take the Black Dagger Brotherhood (BDB) and the Dark Hunter (DH) series(es) for example, both Dark Lover (BDB) and Fantasy Lover (DH) are mediocre books. The best aspect of both books is that they are the start of a very good series. So hopefully this series would be one of them good ones.
Felicemente irresponsabile

Non sto criticando Sex and the City, mi piace!!).

After reading the Laskar Pelangi series, this book feels like an itch on the corner of my eyes. I shut it down after 55 pages and refused to go on further. This is the second book authored by young Indonesians that I have dumped unceremoniously so early in the beginning. I promise I will write about the first later.

The theme is from yore and the writing is a bore. What else left to make me keep reading? Zero. Nada. Nul. You could practically gulp the essence of the book by reading the back cover and that’s about the end of the history for this one.

Other authors are simply geniuses that could twist the plots in so many ways that you could not play as an oracle and predict the ending of the story while some other authors excel in their storytelling techniques that no matter how simple the plot is, the book is still highly entertaining.

This book and the author got none, unfortunately.

I painfully declare that this young author – who happened to be a young banker in her “real life” – had no imagination whatsoever and only used pieces and fragments she saw from Sex and the City like chick lit to prop into her so-called literary product.

I am thoroughly sick with Indonesian authors who drop famous designer names here and there in their book to make it look “sophisticated”. This, unfortunately, happens a great deal in this book.

The female banker Andrea – who dated another male banker Adjie – was reported to shop (or imagining to shop) Jimmy Choo, Manolo Blahnik, Zegna, Chloe and other famous names while at the same time mixing her soaring high purchasing level to those high street names such as Zara, Mango and the likes.

Make up your mind Natassa, if you want to make your character so imaginally impossible in the country plagued with poverty, at least do it right. Those who buy Blahnik simply don’t buy Zara – and those who buy Zara, could not or would not want to buy Blahnik.

I am just sick of the pretentious little world that young Indonesian authors now create to level up the Jakarta metropolitan world to those in New York or Paris, for example. Why not take the very essence of the unique Indonesian life and use it instead of writing the same old bore over and over again.

Yeah yeah..successfull young woman who can buy Jimmy Choo but having hard time deciding to get married. Yawn.

Shall we move on? I don’t even want to talk about this book anymore. It disgusts me to the marrow of my bones

So it’s November 15, the halfway point through NaNoWriMo. For those of you unaware of what this is, refer to a brief description from the official website:

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) challenges you to write a 50,000-word novel, from scratch, in the month of November. It’s a global, uproariously fun endeavor, where participants exchange advice and writing tips on the NaNoWriMo website and in real life, with group write-ins held in coffeeshops, living rooms, and libraries all around the world.

I make note of this because last night my wife completed the 50,000 word requirement for her latest NaNovel, just before the middle of the month. Each year she’s proud of the accomplishment and I’m proud of her for completing such a challenge, which ultimately is self-imposed. She takes the writing of novels seriously, has spent years developing her style and craft and produces quality writing. I imagine thousands of others around the world (last year 120,000 people took part) were equally satisfied with their efforts and the product of their hard work. My wife’s reached the word count limit, but she’s far from finishing the work of writing the novel.

Earlier today I stumbled, completely by accident, upon a blog post by CanLit critic Steven W. Beattie assessing the value of such writing exercises. In his post Beattie aims some discouraging criticism at both Chris Baty, the creator of NaNoWriMo, and the people who take part:

…it is perhaps churlish of me to complain that the whole premise behind the project (in both its adult and youth forms) is based on an erroneous perception of how novels are written, and why….

…writers are encouraged to write without paying heed to the nasty editor in their heads, the one that tells them to refine, delete, excise, rework. The vocabulary of the NaNoWriMo site testifies to the way in which it has bought in to the tyranny of diminished expectations where writing is concerned. Instead of deliberation and focus, writers are encouraged to let loose and be free, and pay no heed to trifling matters such as talent or technique.

Beattie’s argument stems from two flaws in thinking: first, that the people taking part imagine themselves to be in the same way professional novelists and, second, that the writing of a NaNovel ends with Nov. 31. For many of these writers, “noveling” is merely a hobby they attempt once a year as away of expressing themselves or realizing an interesting story they’ve created in their minds. Most of these writers don’t intend to show their work to others outside a small group of family and friends, making it a personal accomplishment for their own entertainment. For those who do hope to make something of quality that others might wish to read, the editing and revising processes are still a part of the writing. There are those who spend months preparing for the event: working out plot details, characters, tropes, scene descriptions, etc. and will later work towards the end result. The competition ending on Nov. 31 does not imply the writing ends; this would be an erroneous assumption.

Novels – at least the ones that endure – take time, commitment, and patience, all things that are in short supply in today’s jacked-up, Internet-driven society, and all things that are antithetical to the very idea of NaNoWriMo.

To say that writers taking part in NaNoWriMo lack such qualities as commitment and patience is a sweeping generalization that, if nothing else, is insulting. What is so appalling about someone on his/her own time writing a novel for their own enjoyment? Beattie claims it is a serious offense, stating that “…’noveling’ has been reduced to the literary equivalent of knitting.” I imagine professional novelists everywhere running around with their arms flailing above their heads in fear that their efforts have been belittled by NaNoWriMo participants. This stance is somewhat ironic when one considers the statements quoted above. The author of the blog post in question should also be aware that the members of ”today’s jacked-up, Internet-driven society” are no small part of his own readership at That Shakespearean Rag.

The NaNoWriMo website offers the promise of recognition and sense of accomplishment, but says nothing about how this devalues the work of countless underpaid, underappreciated professional writers who have spent the better part of their lives honing their craft. Instead, it buys into the cult of celebrity that is inescapable in what passes for North American culture these days.

I find it hard to believe the NaNovelist sitting at home this month, quite possibly as I write this, is attempting to devalue the writing of serious “underappreciated, professional writers”. To be frank, I doubt people participating in this month’s writing endeavour are even considering the professional writer whose talent and commitment are, as Beattie has assured us, of greater value than theirs. There is a self-important pretension placed on the professional writer in this argument that belittles the amateur’s desire and right to produce work of whatever quality for themselves. In many cases these are people who have never written anything of novel length and to suggest that their aspirations of completing such should in some way preclude them from the ranks of those who take part in the “inherently elitist activity” of novel-writing is absurd. Should writing be limited to professionals? In response to this argument my wife says, “If so, one better hope he/she has the ability of Lance Armstrong when getting on a bike, or the talent of Eric Lamaze when mounting a horse”.

A similarly ridiculous argument against writing has been ongoing for years as it relates to genre fiction such as Sci-fi, Fantasy, and ChickLit. These genres are popular because people want to read them and most criticisms I’ve heard or read about them come from readers/writers of “serious” literary fiction and come across as embittered and juvenile. These realms of writing should be taken for what they are: differing and appealing to alternate audiences and sensibilities (this is not to say that readers of literary fiction do not enjoy genre fiction or vice versa).

Such audacity of authorship is to be acknowledged as worthwhile, if not praised for spreading the love of writing and creative expression among a wider demographic. Elitist authors need not worry about the devaluing of their own works, which should speak for themselves. In a phrase: it’s not about you.

Oh, the drama continues. As you know, we deliberated over the title or the longest time. The result? The cover design was getting delayed. Finally, when we couldn’t arrive at one we all liked, we decided to go with an ad hoc title and begin the art work.

Here is the fist batch of options. Will post more tomorrow. Do tell me which one works best for you. And suggestions are welcome. Bear in mind, it is a breezy chicklit-cum-murder mystery. Ciao!

Jacquie è pronta a scommetterci!

Aimee, Margot, Brooke e Lux lavorano nello studio legale Warwick & Warwick di New York.

The media has decided. I’m not a writer. No such luck. No, I’m a ‘woman’ writer. The word ‘woman’ is

The media has decided. I’m not a writer. No such luck. No, I’m a ‘woman’ writer. The word ‘woman’ is a noun, according to all grammar books. When did it become an adjective? When did someone become a ‘woman’ pilot, a ‘woman’ executive, a ‘woman’ photographer? When a ‘woman’ journo in a newspaper, unmindful of the irony, decided to do a story on ‘woman’ something-or-other. When she decided that a story had to be written, not on flying a 3000 ton monster, but on the dainty soul behind the wheel of the said monster.

Well, whoever said life was simple! I’m now confronted with the tag of ‘woman’ writer, for no greater sin than that I’m a female. When male writers embed sappy love stories into their Alpha thrillers, nobody calls them ‘male’ writers. But the minute I do it, I’m asked why women can only think of writing about relationships? Don’t they have anything else to talk about? The journo wants to know, essentially, if all ‘women’ writers in India are only capable of writing about thirty something, hormonally charged independent women in search of perfect sex combined with perfect romance, a hard combo at any time. Why can’t they come up with something different? Why is there so much ‘chicklit’ flooding the market?

My answer: First, all books about urban, successful women are not ‘chicklit’. Second, what’s wrong with chicklit? I can’t think of a funnier book that I’ve read in a long time than Bridget Jones Diary. Third, why would anyone want to rain on the parade of Indian writers, even ‘women’ writers? Why this desperate quest for ‘meaningful’ solemnity in a time of bubbling optimism? Meaningful solemnity at a time of hopeless irrationality and pessimism, at the time of our ‘woman’ Prime Minister, Smt. Indira Gandhi, was fine. But today’s woman, thank God, has forgotten that time, left it behind her, hopefully for good, and can actually drink Absolut vodka with Schweppes tonic without being sent to jail for it. And hurrah for it!

Of course, when there are a million ‘women’ writers, and they’re all writing the same thing, the discriminating eye of that ultimate auditor, the customer, will decide what stays and what goes. Till then, allow all us ‘women’ to crawl out of our monasteries of silence and do what we love to do, that is, write what we love, love.
