Por fin llega la segunda edición de esta mini sección de Subir a Tender en la que se destaca alguno de los grupos que más están dando que hablar en este marasmo informativo que es la blogosphera.

Le Corps Mince de Françoise son un trío de Helsinki residente entre Londres y Berlín. Con semejante combinación de ciudades en su imaginario cool estaba claro que estas veinteañeras recientes no tardarían en convertirse en musas de la vanguardia. Sin llegar a las cotas de notoriedad virtual alcanzadas por The XX, el anterior grupo del que hablamos en estas sección y que sin duda son el fenómeno blogosferico del año, las jóvenes chicas de oro finlandesas han cosechado cierto éxito en los blogs de referencia en los que se habla de ellas como un resurgir del electro clash de las Chick son Speed, pero con un par de décadas menos, la influencia de M.I.A. y CSS, y el arroz bastante más al dente.

Pese a su vikinguez genética, Le Corps Mince de Françoise podrían ser unas modernas paneuropeas al uso, de esas que estudian en la Saint Martins de Londres y van a París el fin de semana para reposar sus faldas plisadas en algún rincón de la terraza del club La Maroquinerie, mientras sonrien y piden un zumo de tomate al camarero. Pero su valor diferencial es una formación musical clásica que les permite expresar en forma de canciones lo que cualquier chica de ese perfil escribiría en su “querido diario”.

Así pues gracias a las letras de los temas de Le Corps Mince de Françoise podemos saber que hace dice y piensa la elite cool femenina del viejo continente. Sabemos que nunca ligarían con un chico que llevase unas RayBan Wayfarer. Mientras hay quienes ni conocen el modelo de gafas por su nombre comercial ellas ya aborrecen a cualquiera que les suelte un “estudias o trabajas” calzando semejante hype de la óptica solar. Que les gustan los gatos anoréxicos, con los que sublimar la frustración de no poder entrar una 36. De hecho les gustan tanto que decidieron rendir homenaje con el nombre de la banda a Françoise, su escuálido minino. Y que consideran que los sujetadores son tan incómodos como la presión social a la que todavía se ve sometida cualquier chicha mona, moderna y liberada. Escuchar sus canciones es como husmear en un almanaque íntimo. Un auténtico placer para las pulsiones soft-boayeuristas del curioso, y una bendición para todo buen cool hunter que se precie.

Costumbrismo cool, nihilismo feminista, belleza de modelo amateur de American Apparel, y la juventud suficiente como para comerse el mundo. Con semejante cocktail de atributos solo les faltaba engatusar a algún productor novel berlinés que maquillase las canciones. Lo hicieron y ahora solo les queda mantener la tendencia ascendente hasta cruzar el tipping point del mercado alternativo. Si las vemos en el Sonar 2010 la patata estará lista para salir del horno!

Många platser, forum och personer har en del i mitt musikälskande liv, och en speciell del fylls av Ladyfest där jag är musikansvarig tillsammans med Emma och Hannah. Ett fantastiskt fint nätverk, men en grupp tjejer jag gärna överöser med superlativ.

Just denna vecka är också en speciellt Ladyfestlig vecka då vi satsar på dj’andet.

På torsdag spelar Emma och Raisa skivor på Svanen på Jazzhuset, och Portrait painters uppträder. Gött blir det. På lördag spelar jag skivor. Även detta på Jazzhuset, men i en ny klubbtappning. Klubben heter Väsen och det är PREMIÄR på lördag! Dansant kommer musiken att vara med en massa DJ:s och Dufvan på scen!

Algo así como las riot girrrls de la electrónica, el trío muniqués Chicks On Speed puede estar orgulloso de ser uno de los creadores, junto a Miss Kittin del electroclash, la última tendencia de la música electrónica que rompe barreras y pistas en el nuevo milenio.

La alemana Kiki Moorse, la estadounidense Melissa Logan y la australiana Alex Murray-Leslie se conocieron en 1997 en un bar cerca de la Academia de Arte de Munich donde acordaron crear un grupo musical que diera salida a sus inquietudes artísticas.

El grup Chicks On Speed dissenya el nou envàs monoblock d’Estrella Damm. Chicks On Speed: una australiana, una alemanya i una nord-americana enamorades del mediterrani. Aquest estiu arriba el més agossarat dels envasos monoblock editats fins a ara. A través del disseny de les Chicks on Speed, Estrella Damm se situa a l’avantguarda del disseny internacional a través de la ja emblemàtica ampolla d’alumini vermella d’edició limitada.

La monoblock és una iniciativa innovadora amb la qual Estrella Damm treu cada any al mercat una peça de col·lecció, en edició limitada, que serveix per a refrescar la imatge d’un producte tradicional, com ho és la cervesa, aportant disseny i d’exclusivitat.

Durant els últims cinc anys, Estrella Damm ha plasmat les creacions de diferents dissenyadors en el seu envàs monoblock, un format modern, 100% reciclable i realitzat en alumini. Aquest estiu arriba la vuitena edició de “la monoblock” i ha estat el grup Chicks on Speed qui han creat un disseny agossarat realitzat amb il·lustracions i collage sobre l’emblemàtic fons vermell d’Estrella Damm. Un disseny de tendència i avantguarda, que reflecteix el caràcter innovador de la marca i que recull l’essència del mediterrani a través dels ulls de tres estrangeres enamorades de Barcelona.

Chicks On Speed are not just any old relic of electroclash, they are essentially an art project. Core members Melissa Logan and Alex Murray-Leslie met at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich over 10 years ago, and have since become the figureheads of a large and constantly changing collective of artists, designers and musicians. In the intervening years since 2004’s Push The Spacebar, the band has been incredibly busy with other creative endeavours, including curating 2006’s impressive Girl Monster (a three-disc collection of underground music made by women) and various installations at modern art Meccas like MoMA in New York and Centre Pompidou in Paris, plus filming projects, fashion collections and building “Objekt Instruments”, homemade noisemaking implements such as the high-heeled shoe guitars for which they humorously include building instructions on one track. It’s all the more impressive that they somehow found the time to make this new – and very long – double-disc record.

The group’s critical reception over the years has been decidedly mixed and it seems to be a case of you either ‘get’ them (like their legions of fans across the globe) or you don’t (like the Red Hot Chili Peppers fans who threw bottles of urine at the band during their Hyde Park warm-up set in 2004). For anyone unfamiliar with electroclash, the art world and outspoken feminists, Cutting The Edge might seem terribly noisy and utterly incomprehensible. The lyrics are incredibly abstract; more slogans and statements than flowing verses. However, it is still possible to appreciate the Chicks’ unique sense of humour. This is particularly evident in tracks such as ‘Art Rules’ (a sequel of sorts to 2003’s ‘Fashion Rules’), where they poke fun at the often fickle and sexist art industry, and ‘The Worst Band In The World’, where they make fun of imitators and, typically, themselves.

Musically, Cutting The Edge largely consists of poppy and upbeat electro, but the Objekt Instruments and art-school aesthetic ensure that an experimental edge is ever present courtesy of some very unconventional noises. For instance, ‘Intro’ opens the album with what sounds like someone hitting a shuttlecock repeatedly, for a few seconds at least, while the aptly titled ‘Scream Song’ layers and distorts the sounds of women screaming for a testing three minutes. Additionally, interspersed throughout the album are a number of short spoken-word and random noise tracks to break things up. The standout tracks tend to cluster on the first disc, starting with the thumping, catchy ‘Girl Monster’ which takes a shot at vacant female popstars, references riot grrl and feminism, and features stiffly Germanic android-like vocals. ‘Buzz’ and the already mentioned ‘Art Rules’ are amusing highlights, while ‘Sex In Der Stadt’ stands out for a different reason as the listener is bombarded by imitations of adverts for sex hotlines. As always with Chicks On Speed, explicit and sometimes crass lyrics are par for the course.

Despite these peaks, it’s impossible to ignore that 24 tracks is a lot to take on and runs the risk of alienating all but their most ardent fans. Restricting it to a single disc – preferably the first – would have made it all the more tolerable. As their back catalogue proves, Chicks On Speed can make themselves more accessible when they want to, but Cutting The Edge is best approached as a work of modern art that will no doubt appear to some to be obnoxious and pretentious nonsense. It’s certainly an acquired taste but not a bad one, in small doses.

‘Super Surfer Girl’

As soon as I get the time to start updating this blog properly, the power cable for my laptop breaks! Why does this sort of thing always seem to happen?! Unfortunately I will be without my laptop for a short time & since I am about to graduate, my University will also no longer let me use their computers. Hopefully I can get this sorted out soon & I will be updating regularly again.

I was going to wait until my first review was posted, but since I don’t know when I will be able to update next, I might as well announce it. I am delighted to have been accepted as part of the review team for the fantastic Wears The Trousers magazine/blog. My first review (for the new Chicks on Speed album) should be up in a couple of days, so if you’re missing Soul Drift, keep checking the Wears the Trousers website.

So have you heard? Amy Winehouse, everyone’sfavourite druggie with the voice of an angel, is designing a capsule collection for the PPQ, a chic, high-end clothing line based in London. I don’t know how to feel about this.

On the one hand, I think that Winehouse has an extremely interesting aesthetic and great personal style, but on the other hand, she’s not a serious designer, just like Peaches Geldof, another It Girl who’s contributed to PPQ. Not everyone with fashion sense and a marketable name needs to be “designing” clothing for the masses. By granting her the title of “designer”, they’re just devaluing all of the work that real, trained designers have to go through to even break into the industry.

If PPQ likes her look so much, why don’t they just get their real designers to make a Wino-inspired line and cite her as their muse, as Lagerfeld and Cavalli have done in the past?

Of course not. Where’s the money in that, sweetheart?

Despite my initial objections, I am looking forward to seeing what comes of this. I mean, combining the modernity of PPQ withAmy’s throw-back style can only create something good, right? Cross your fingers!

Here’s “Fashion Rules” by Chicks on Speed. Play this one nice and loud while voguing like an ’80s clubber. Believe me: it’ll do you good.

Manifesto zur Grundlage nehmen. Und die Lecture kommt vom W.A.G.E. Kollektiv (US), die sich gemeinsam für die Rechte und die angemessene Bezahlung von Künstlern einsetzen.

Es scheint ja so einfach zu sein, die vermeintliche Underground-Elektro-Szene glücklich zu machen: Man stelle einfach drei Frauen in Uniformen auf die Bühne und lasse die Musik aus dem Laptop kommen. Immerhin hält eine einen Bass in der Hand und die zweite ein Mikrofon. Die dritte versteckt sich hinter einem Deko-Keyboard und zeigt ab und zu ihre Hände, fast wie ein Beweis, dass sie die Tasten nicht berührt. Die so angesagten Chicks on Speed klingen und sehen aus wie Stedwardessen auf Valium – aber die Menge findet es total hip und keinesfalls Mainstream. Der coole und keinesfalls Mainstream-Radiosender Motor FM klingt genauso so, 24 Stunden am Stück.

Zum Glück gab es am heutigen Abend im Kreuzberger Club Lido jedoch auch eine echte Band zu sehen, mit echter Musik und echten Instrumenten und so. Das sind eben jene, die ich hier versucht habe, mit meiner altersschwachen Kamera zu fotografieren: The Dollhouse. Bekannte Gesichter aus London – darunter Anne-Marie und James, Mitbewohner, Freunde und Covent Garden-Busker – in neuer Formation und neuem Sound: Streicher und Popmusik ergibt eine verdammt gute und anspruchsvolle Mischung. Und im Gegensatz zum norwegischen Ken-Klon auf Happy-Pills, der gestern den Eurovision Song Contest gewonnen hat, ist hier die Geige nicht bloß ein lustiges Bühnen-Gimmik.

Auch interessant zu beobachten: Im Publikum “starke” Frauen mit missglückten Emo-Frisuren und Stewardessen-Uniformen sowie prollige Kerle mit noch missglückteren Rockabilly-Haarschnitten. Ach, irgendwie verliere ich gerade den guten Glauben in den (Musik)-Geschmack der Massen, vor allem in derer, die sich für sehr speziell halten.

kurczaczki powracają po dwóch latach robienia videoklipów, przeróżnych instalacji artystycznych czy akcji związanych z modą, czytania książek a przy okazji tworzenia własnych numerów na nową, piątą już płytę. ‘Cutting The Edge’ pojawi się w oficjalnym obiegu 29 maja, więc to już tuż tuż! żeby było ciekawiej nasze dziewczyny do pomocy przy produkcji tej płyty zaprzągnęły nieżły line up gości: Whomadewho, Joe Robinson, Kathi Glas, Mark Stewart, Christopher Just, Patrick Pulsinger to tylko kilka nazwisk. ciekawostką jest również to, że płyta powstawała i nagrywana była w różnych, czasem nietypowych miejscach, np. w hotelowej łazience, Centrum Pompidouna czy szkockiej wyspie Skye… brzmi całkiem interesująco. jeszcze bardziej interesujące jest to, że nowy krążek Chicks On Speed ukaże sie na dwóch cd, zawierających aż 24 numery. wśród nich znajdą się wcześniejsze single, ‘Art Rules’ i ‘Super Surfer Girl’ do którego klip poniżej.

Nå er det lenge siden jeg har blogget, men vet dere.. Jeg er syyyyk ! Og det er forferdelig. Jeg ligger i sengen med forkjølelse, vondt i halsen og hele hodet er tett. Syns synd i meg selv, hehehe. I haven’t lifted an Urb Magazine since probably 7 years ago, when fittingly they had dj Shadow on the cover. So besides hitting up someones favorite dance party and grinding on a rhythmically challenged skinny chick to shit that sounds like a cross-pollination between dj Funk and Chicks on Speed, I have no clue as to what’s really good with electronica.

But walking back to my spot after vibing and eating hummusburgers, I heard some crazy disco-tech sounds of the future being projected in rapture-like decibels. I stopped dead in my tracks like I saw a pair of fat asses when I looked over and saw this dude just cooling out something major:

The music, the style, it was so fresh, I loved it! Probably because, I too wake up some days with that I don’t give a fuck in me and one day in the cafeteria(many many years ago current job) my friends and I reflected on the aftermath of putting E in everyone’s mash potatoes except for ours, at least mine anyways(***disclaimer…don’t do that, it was just a thought resulting from watching the film-Groove or something)
