With a host of metal talent already confirmed for next year’s BLOODSTOCK OPEN AIR, organisers have revealed the first set of headliners for the 10th anniversary event.

The awesome pairing comes in the form of Finnish metal monsters CHILDREN OF BODOM and LA Cyber-Metallers FEAR FACTORY.

Joining the two headliners on the bill are cult Finns AMORPHIS. These increasingly progressive melo-death doomsters have received widespread critical acclaim for their latest album “Skyforger”.

The BLOODSTOCK OPEN AIR METAL FESTIVAL 2010 will take place at Catton Hall, Derbyshire from 13th – 15th August.

The UK’s premier indie metal festival, Bloodstock Open Air, is already looking to be pretty sick next year, even though the fond memories of this summers event are still fresh. To add to the already certifiably hardcore line up including Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation and Behemoth, the nostalgia tinged metal of Fear Factory and Children of Bodom (who I saw right back at Bloodstock indoor in 2004, when I was like 15) has also been added to the pretty varied line up. Also added are Amorphis, the Finnish melodic metal band who’s debut album surprised me in that it was actually pretty good. Anyway, Bloodstock lineup so far is:

I’m awfully sick of people thinking they’re cool when they have a list of 107 bands they listen to on their MySpace. Because when I look at those lists, they consists of The Devil Wears Prada, NeverShoutNever, All Time Low, We The Kings, Hey Monday, Bring Me The Horizon, Owl City, iwrestledabearonce, The Maine, Set Your Goals… and the list goes on. All of those bands sound EXACTLY the same. They have no talent. They play the 4 basic chords and the drums have no beat. You’re not cool if you listen to these bands. Why? Because they’re untalented groups that are emo posers and only make money on their appearance.

Also, The Devil Wears Prada is NOT heavy metal. It is “emoscreamopigsquealcore.” Real heavy metal is Black Sabbath, Children of Bodom, Opeth, Norther, and Amon Amarth. You may think those bands sound the same as well, but they have talent. They have amazing vocals, fantastic instrumentals, and actually write songs that are over 2 minutes long. Listen to “Ghost of Perdition” by Opeth. It’s a 10 minute song which is filled with death growls, soothing vocals, stunning guitar and drum solos; it’s all amazing.

I searched online for Myanmar metal stuff last night and found a forum. With great expectations, I clicked on the link.

What I found?

They were talking about… nu-metal??? Yes, nu-metal. Frigging hell mallcore stuff like Slipknot and Marilyn Manson. There were even people who mentioned Linkin Park and Flyleaf.

Seriously! There was nothing on it but mallcore. -.-

Next one was a blog. He was talking about Slipknot and how much he likes them and on another blog was an article on Myanmar metal scene and the author was talking about Bullet For My Valentine, Avenged Sevenfold and Trivium. Frigging Metalcore.

Why can’t they just get out of this whole mallcore thing??? Why won’t they step deeper into the depths? WHY?????

There were even some people who said,”Slipknot is Death Metal”. Ya, go die. It pisses me off when I hear people saying crap like that.

Mallcore, Nu-metal, Metalcore, BFMV, A7X, Marilyn Manson, BMTH, blah blah blah and it goes on and on and on in a never finishing mallcore whirlpool. This is what’s happening  in Myanmar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Metal albums aren’t that rare anymore. You can pretty much buy them here. (Last week I got Black Sabbath:The Dio Years and Megadeth’s Endgame.) Or you can download them via Mediafire or 4shared (which I usually do).

Still people are still drowning in the mallcore whirlpool… labeling themselves “metalheads” with Slipknot songs in their mp3 players.

 Jeg er veldig glad i coverversjoner som gjøres med en egen vri (må for all del ikke sammenlignes med X-Factor og annen crap). Det jeg elsker med en god cover, er at låten gjøres som om den var bandet/artisten sin egen låt. Høres det bra ut, så høres det bra ut, selv om musikkbildet er forandret. Noen gode eksempler:

Etter å ha hørt orginalen, blekner gjerne kopien noe. Selv om Cash gjorde en utrolig cover av denne låten, så er det fremdeles (bare) en cover i mine ører. Allikevel liker jeg den svært godt.

Den her låta er dedikert (ja vet det heter “dedisert”, men det høres så teit ut) til VxPretty. Det eneste som ikke stemme er delen om “rules”. Der finnes det en god del. Men jaja…. du er  nå ganske så prettyful

Gjerne får en den evige diskusjonen om orginalen eller coveren er den beste versjonen. Døh! En hovedregel er at orginalen er best, selv om det noen ganger kan være åpent. Noe jeg definitivt har lært etter en diskusjon med E-Dogg, så er det at musikk er noe som engasjerer. Smaken er som baken. Men smaken kan heves akkurat som bakdeigen,  samtidig kan også deigen krympe hvis en tramper for hardt foran ovnen. Noen ganger er det greit å være enig om at en er uenig. Vennskapet lenge leve! Selv om det var like før jeg fyrte til deg Det er godt å ha gode venner!

Det er herlig å legge merke til at et band uten skrupler stjeler riff og melodier fra andre. Et av de beste eksemplene jeg vet om er The Levellers Vs. Amorphis. De sistnevnte finnene vinner denne låta så det hyler, selv om de har lånt, stjelt og gjort vokalpartiene om med egen melodi. Moralen er at god musikk kan bli bedre…

Hurt – Johnny Cash (originally by Nine Inch Nails)
Trent Reznor’s haunting ballad about drug addiction was seen in a new light when sung by country legend Johnny Cash. made even more haunting by Cash as it was released after his sad death. Reznor said this about the cover:
“I pop the video in, and wow… Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps… Wow. I felt like I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn’t mine anymore… It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. Somehow that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning — different, but every bit as pure ”

Un ejercico recomendable es dejarse perder por la blogosfera y seguir links y enlaces durante un tiempo limitado, para no hacer esto interminable. Hace unos momentos me he puesto a ello y he pensado en postear al respecto, lo cual de entrada está interrumpiendo los 15 minutos que me había fijado, pero creo que vale la pena.

1. Jah Work ha dejado un comentario en mi post sobre el show de Deadstring Brothers en Barna y he seguido el link hasta su blog, El Hivernáculo, donde leo que el nuevo grupo de Marsha Marjieh -ex vocalista de los citados Deastring Brothers-, se llama The Octopus.

2. En el myspace de The Octopus escucho a Marsha en un combo más en la onda high energy que impulsaron los nórdicos herederos de las esencias de MC5, y fisgando por el sitio me llama la atención una referencia a The Viking Youth Power Hour y algo sobre que inspiraron títulos de canciones para Octopus a partir de algun tipo de parodia metalera.

3. En el sitio de Viking Youth Power Hour no entiendo casi nada (no por el idioma; en un tour de 15 minutos por la red la idea no es profundizar y voy al grano ojeando en diagonal), pero adivino que se trata de un espacio de humor de Chicago y veo un trailer de la clásica The Shining/El Resplandor, con Jack Nicholson, aunque omitiendo lo bueno, parece un spot de La Casa de la Pradera.

4. El otro comentario a la entrada es de l’Esbarzer, blogero al que hace apenas unas semanas he conocido en persona y que tiene un bloc con reflexiones realmente interesantes, Mac on the Rocks. Curiosamente su último post toma por título un tema clásico de 1972 la Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Will the Circle Be Unbroken, y empiezo a leerlo pensando en ello. Pero el post se va por otros derroteros, muy Mac -por lo que le voy conociendo- con reflexiones sobre las compras por Internet, la tolerancia, el fanatismo, y Mike Farris… interpretando Will the Circle… En fin, parafraseando a la Nitty Gritty, el círculo es irrompible.

5. En el anterior post de l’Esbarzer leo una referencia -previa a tantas reflexiones- al bloc de Il Cavaliere, El Signo de los Tiempos, y allí que me voy antes de finalizar la lectura del post de Mac. Bien, no es que me vaya, pues soy de los que para abrir páginas en la red siempre uso el botón derecho y la opción “Abrir enlace en una pestaña nueva”, para no perder lo que tenía si me está resultando interesante. El enlace mencionado lleva a un post de marzo del presente año en el que se comentaba el disco gospel de Mike Farris -ex vocalista de los nunca suficientemente reivindicados Screamin’ Cheetah Wheelies- y de cuya actuación en el último Azkena guardo tremendo recuerdo.

6. Vuelvo a una de las pestañas abiertas, El Hivernáculo, y deslizandome por el bloc flipo -literalmente flipo- con otro post dedicado al nuevo álbum de versiones de Children of Bodom. Más que con el post, con lo que alucino es con la versión de Lookin’ Out My Back Door de la Creedence.

This week I look at three metal releases that have come out in the last week or two. Now with pictures!

Immortal – All Shall Fall

The new Immortal album was everything I could have hoped for. After being a huge fan of the last release, Sons of Northern Darkness, I was really looking forward to this album, and I can say it is not disappointing. It continues the more thrash oriented sound from the last album, but feels slightly “dirtier” in parts, more of a black metal aesthetic. That’s not to say the production is bad, because it’s great. Think of it as Sons with a bit more speed and soloing, and there you go. Definitely recommended for fans of the band, as well as anyone who hasn’t given them a shot yet. Now I just have to pray they tour North America.

Baroness – Blue Record

The real reason I’m even reviewing this is because of how much the latest issue of Decibel magazine fellated this album. Not only was it the cover story, they proclaimed that it might be the album of the year, and we’ve still got about two and half months left to go. Simply put, this album is good, but not the second coming of Jesus like it’s portrayed. It doesn’t do anything that bands like Torche or Goes Cube didn’t do this year or the year before. It’s your typical sludgy/stoner rock with some various prog and post metal bits thrown in. Like I said, good, but not the best of the year, I prefer the new Goes Cube to this.

Children of Bodom – Skeletons in the Closet

Last, we have this new release from Finnish metallers Children of Bodom, which consists entirely of covers. I can honestly say I enjoy this album more than most of their original catalogue. I don’t mind a few of their songs, but the albums have been getting increasingly boring the last few years, and this record is a hilarious detour from that road. A quick glance through the names covered on this album make a bit of sense coming from a metal band. Slayer, Iron Maiden, Suicidal Tendencies, Anthrax, the Scorpions. Then we hit names like CCR, Pat Benetar, and even Kenny Rogers for God’s sake! Oh and yes, this also features the infamous Britney Spears cover as well.  Really, it entertains me quite a bit, and if you’re in the mood for a little “Looking Out My Back Door” metal style, then this is the disc for you.

The singer/guitarist of Children of Bodom, will be playing guitar for Hypocrisy during their upcoming US tour.

Hypocrisy mainman Peter Tagtgren released the following statement:

“We’re very happy to bring Alexi along on this tour and that he’s helping us out with filling the 2nd guitarist position. Funny, the first  Children of Bodom show was a support gig for Hypocrisy on the Nuclear Blast festival in ‘98. Since then me and Alexi have become very good friends. I’ve helped him with producing and he’s helped me by contributing a guitar solo on one of my records with my other band Pain. There will be no shortage of alcohol on this tour that’s for sure.”

Should be plenty of (drunken) fun there then!

Przed kilkoma miesiącami na pewnym forum w kategorii “muzyka” zapoczątkowałem cykl sond poświęcony najlepszym okładom płyt rockowo – metalowych. Jego idea polegała na wyborze dwudziestu najlepszych grafik z szeroko definiowalnego gatunku muzycznego muzyki rockowej i metalowej. Przy czym słowo “najlepsze” było w tym wypadku interpretowane jedynie w kategoriach subiektywnych wszystkich głosujących.

Tak oto pisałem we wstępie do sondy: “Oczywiście okładki płyt tak naprawdę nie mają znaczenia jeśli chodzi o muzykę, a wnoszą jedynie jakieś tam ślady estetyki czy w mały sposób wpływają na klimat słuchanej płyty – to każdy wie. Niemniej warto się im przyjrzeć. Co prawda płyta mogłaby być sprzedawana w zwykłej kopercie bez żadnej grafiki, ale tak nie jest dzięki czemu mamy różnorodne okładki i możemy o nich mówić.”.

Okay since I am going in about Myanmar Metal scene and all that stuff, I think I should list up some metal genres and bands I listen to.

I like Melodeath, Thrash, Power, Death, Black, Progressive, Speed, Symphonic, Gothic, Traditional Heavy, and even Metalcore… well almost all metal genres. And I am big fan of Children of Bodom, Judas Priest and Metallica. I also like Iced Earth, Dimmu Borgir, Behemoth, Iron Maiden, Kamelot, Vanishing Point, DragonForce, Cannibal Corpse, Apocalyptica, Black Sabbath, Dream Theater, Opeth, Kreator, Arch Enemy, Amon Amarth, Nightwish, Exodus, Megadeth, Slayer, and so on. As for -core, As I Lay Dying, Trivium, Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall and I Killed the Prom Queen. Okay enough for the list. Let’s get to the point.

Metal scene in Myanmar…

To say the truth, whenever I think of it, it makes me frown.

Well, I’ll say an example. There are ten metal fans from Myanmar. Among those ten, five have only listened to nu-metal and -core bands and have never heard of bands like Iron Maiden. (You can refer to those “metal fans” as “so-called”s if you want).

If you meet someone in Myanmar who claims to like metal, ask him what he listens to. Most likely, he will begin talks about Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet For My Valentine, Slipknot and/or Marilyn Manson. I’ve met some dudes who say,”Slipknot is Death Metal, so heavy!!!” and I was like “WTF was that!???”. When I show them Iron Maiden, they gave me something like “Is this even metal?”. There are also some people who say,”Metallica ain’t good. They ain’t heavy. blah blah blah”. If they want to listen to all that screaming, go listen to screamo.

Also, they are some people who’ve only listened to Slipknot and Marilyn Manson and think they’ve listened to true metal. And they blabber stuff like,”Metal is just screaming out and they don’t need to care about lyrics, blah blah blah.” Imagine how much I got pissed off. Metal is one of the music genres which has various and really lyrical themes. The themes range from Religion, Mythology, Philosophy, Politics to Society, Personal Struggles, Suffering and Love. There are also loads of concept albums (e.g-Kamelot’s Epica, Black Halo, Iced Earth’s Something Wicked Saga).

And another thing, metal isn’t all about being heavy. Try listening to bands like Vanishing Point, Kamelot, Nightwish, etc. Also, there are ballads like The Unforgiven, The Unforgiven II, etc by Metallica and A Tout Le Monde by Megadeth. What I want to say is,”Don’t blabber if you really haven’t listened to metal.”

One more thing, metal fanbase here still isn’t really big and mostly those “metalheads” listen to nu and -core. I used to like nu-metal. But I stopped listening to it, once I got in touch with Melodeath, Thrash, Power, Death, etc. Try it out. Compare nu to other metal genres. There, you will see the difference.

As for Metalcore, I still listen to it. I enjoy listening to bands like As I Lay Dying, Killswitch Engage, I Killed the Prom Queen, etc. I used to be a big fan of Bullet For My Valentine. Even now, I listen to some of their songs. What I want to say here is just because they’ve listened to those -core bands, they act like they’ve listened to true metal. Some don’t even know AILD or KSE.

This shouldn’t happen.

To all those “so-called” “metalheads” in Myanmar, if you really like metal, explore! Go in depths! Don’t just stop with nu or -core. The bad thing here is, you can’t buy much metal CDs. About half of the albums I have were downloaded.

The underground metal bands here mostly play metalcore. Well, I like All Else I Fail and Last Day of Beethoven for metalcore. For other metal genres, I’d list Yakkhadeva, Architect of Misery and Book of Death. I also wish I could see more underground metal bands that create other metal genres than metalcore.

I guess, Metal scene in Myanmar will take some time to become like Hip Hop or Punk scenes which are currently growing rapidly.

But anyway,
