I was first introduced (not in person) to Boy 8-Bit a couple of months ago on Annie Mac’s Mashup. his remix of Drumming – Florence and the Machine was playing, and in all honesty it didn’t jump right out at me straight away. But I decided to buy it anyway. I popped up a couple of times when my ipod was on shuffle and it grew on me quickly.

However, the next song by him topped it. His Mars – Fake Blood remix is definitely a better song. I was surprised because there are so many Mars remixes out there, I think I preferred this one to his drumming remix because I love the original drumming, it was very difficult to top, and it didn’t quite make. What I really liked about his mars remix was that he focused the whole song around the awesome sounding chordy bit before the main catch. Then he made that bit his own.

Then his remixes hit the big time. Even though this next song was one of his earlier remixes (2007), it is the most recent one I have heard. This one sticks to his name the most out of all of the ones on show today, being the most 8 bit, a very enjoyable song indeed.

Innaday (Boy8-Bit Remix) – Eames

The next song is his best remix to date (in my opinion), therefore receives the ‘coveted’ γ song award. Again I heard this on Annie Mac’s Mashup, great radio show, and bought it as soon as it was released, earlier this month. It is of course his remix of Quicksand – La Roux. I love the use of odd instrumentation, such as the steel drums, and the slow attack synths. I liked the original, but I love this.

A couple of months ago, I heard the Erol Alkan/Boys Noize collaboration which is know as “Waves”. It was huge, and still is a beater of a song.

However the first song I have for you today is the Chilly Gonzales Piano Remake. Gonzales’ style has been volatile to say the least over the past few years, but he has remained with the piano throughout. This song is beautiful to say the least. It keeps the awesome melody from the original, but it is oh so calming. Not one for the club.

This next one is by one of the original creators of Waves – Erol Alkan. This isn’t new, however it is a mix of two great artist, Erol and The Klaxons.

Next I have a Boys Noize Remix of a Chilly Gonzales for you (round in a circle eh?). I’m a huge fan of Boys Noize, have been ever since I heard “& Down” and “Lava Lava”.

As you may have noticed, I have not yet christened a “γ song”. This is because I came across two monstrous songs in the writing of this post, while perusing my Boys Noize Collection. I am unable to choose which is better, so there are 2 γ songs today (I know, against what I said before).

Laoying Shao Road, Fenghuang, China

On the banks of the calmly flowing river Tuo, in the back water river-town of Fenghuang, sits  OD Record store.  Narrow and quaint, snugly camouflaged by tea shops and  food stores; a record store that could easily be unseen by even the most observant eye.

We enter the shop, which has more in common with a long slim corridor than your average store (the idea of browsing space, having not really caught on), and discover a wall dominated by CDs without covers.  Each CD sits in a perfectly fitted clear plastic wallet, offering neither explanation nor reason for their naked forms. I stare closely at the specimens and discover them to be neither official release, nor pirated copies, but press-release promotional CDs, the likes of which are usually sent to music journalists or radio-stations.

I stare closely at a remastered release of The Police’s Reggatta Da Blanc, and notice that each CD is dotted with  stickers offering press-friendly promotional notes in Mandarin. We stop for a minute and gaze out to the River Tuo in wonder, contemplating how a small shop in the middle of nowhere in China, could have come into such a supply of promotional CDs. We come to a swift conclusion; that the store is either an ex-writer/ radio presenter/ editor’s personal collection for sale, or else a record-label company has liquidated its stock onto the market (which, according to copyright legislation, is technically illegal).

Spurred on by the apparent rarity of the promos on hand (after-all when was the last time you saw a CHINESE promotional copy of a record!), we get flicking. A few interesting titles raise their heads; a chill out CD featuring a Radiohead remix tempts my purse strings, as does a James Brown live album from the 1980s, and Supertramp’s Greatest Hits.

I scan my eyes over the hypnotically monotonous shelving, searching for anything unusual or that I have wanted for a while. I spy Roger Water’s The Wall Live In Berlin,  haphazardly jammed at the back of one of the stands near the cash register. Recorded way back in 1990, the live album features the likes of Van Morrison, Sinead O’Conner and, erm, Cyndi Lauper, dueting with the ex-Pink Floyd singer.

Picking up on the slight interest I show, the manageress slots the The Wall into the shop’s stereo and cranks it up to 11. The opening chords of In The Flesh ring out, and a biro on top of the old speakers near the till rattles as Water’s aged voice eventually  croons, “So you thought you might like to go to the show”,  the infamous first lines of that infamous album.  I listen to the track,  reminiscent of that spine-tingling night at Live 8, and, light of its 40Y (£3.64) price tag, can’t say no.

We pay up, and wander back to the balcony of our hotel, where we listen to the album, as the sun sets over the quaint river town.

José Padilla, Dj residente de Café del Mar

José Padilla es un deejay (DJ), músico y productor de música ambiental. Es conocido por su trabajo como DJ residente en el Café del Mar, un bar localizado en San Antonio de Portmany, en la costa oeste de Ibiza. Padilla es considerado uno de los responsables por la popularización de la música electrónica Chill Out.

El Café del Mar es famoso por la selección de su música para los atardeceres ibicencos. Cada atardecer, centenares de personas se reunen en torno a él, tomando un refresco o recostados en la arena de la playa, para contemplar cómo el mar engulle al sol. Todo este ritual es acompañado de música chill out, pinchada por diversos deejays entre los que destaca José Padilla.

El Café del Mar. Un lugar para contemplar los atardeceres de la bahía Caló des Moro, en Ibiza.

Padilla, quien lleva casi 20 años como DJ residente de Café del Mar, saltó a la popularidad tras su éxito “Adiós Ayer”, un tema Chill Out que arranca con suavidad pero que, exponencialmente, alcanza altas cotas de amplia fortaleza musical motivadas por la percusión y un sonido instrumental grave de cuerda. En 2001, el popular cantante británico Seal acompañó con su voz a la canción, dotándola de una dimensión internacional.

La página web de Padilla está en construcción pero en ella podemos escuchar su tema musical más famoso a la par que contactar con él mediante teléfono o correo electrónico. En Internet tenemos infinidad de enlaces sobre su música, destacando el MySpace del DJ, con fotos, música y enlaces. Cuando José Padilla no está en Ibiza, podemos verle pinchando en festivales en Budapest, Helsinki o Dubai.

A continuación podemos visualizar un vídeo en catalán y castellano [8:24] en el que José Padilla, Almadrava o Chambao nos hablan de la música Chill Out.

En el mercado existen multitud de discos de Chill Out. De José Padilla podemos enumerar algunos como Souvenir (1998) o Navigator (2001), además de diversos recopilatorios del sello Café del Mar en los que ha colaborado. Sin duda, la música Chill Out, esencial para relajarse el fin de semana.
