It’s amazing to believe it’s only been a week since leaving home – it feels like months!  Beijing is so much cleaner, greener, quiter and cooler than I had ever expected.  Sure, it’s probably all a front for the Olympics but it’s certainly been impressive.

I was lucky enough to fly into Beijing on a brand-spanking new A380 Airbus.  With two stories and the capability to carry more than 800 passengers (although Singapore Airlines had configured them to carry only 470ish passengers) it was one amazing piece of metal – not that us sitting in cattle class had much of a chance to check out the features such as the suites and bar!

On arrival we were swiftly escorted to a bar to watch the opening ceremony.  Wasn’t it amazing?!  Gosh the Chinese are proud of themselves.

Our first day provided us with a slight sense of orientation (not that we have any idea where we are still).  We managed to find the NZ Embassy to pick up our Olympics tickets which was conveniently placed close to the Silk Market, which, like every other market in Asia, was filled with clawing women screaming, “Hey lady!  You buy some jeans?”.  In 35 degree heat – not likely!  In the afternoon we (stupidly) decided to hire bikes to see some of the city.  Our screaming and quick pedalling seemed to get us through the trafficlight-ignoring vehicles.  My first brush with the law came when I naughtily tried to pedal across a highway only to be chased down by a policeman.  Clearly I still need better work on my road rules.

Day two meant our first Olympic events!  The trip out to the main stadiums takes us a little over an hour – not because it is that far, but because we need to change to about 50 different subway lines then endure the ridiculous security checks where they usually insist that we try all the ingredients in our bag, including deodorant, asthma inhalers, and mints.  Our first event was to the artistic gymnastics which was amazing!  You wouldn’t believe how much we enjoyed it.  We were lucky enough to sit next to Moss Burmester’s Aunty (way up in the cheap seats) who had been a gymnast and was able to explain the “rules” to us.  By the end of our 3 hours we had become die-hard fans and experts.  We decided that the balance beam is a waste of time as most the gymnast’s spent more time on the floor than they did the beam!  We were lucky enough to see the American women in action as well as the Brittish, Italian, Japanese, Ukrainian, Russian, German and Australian teams.

On Day 3 we checked out the “Lama Temple” which is the only Tibetan Buddhist temple outside of Tibet.  It was overly colourful and we were quickly smoked out by the incense.  We then wandered (for a couple of hours) to the Drum and Bell Tower.  Disappoiningly it was closed due to the recent attacks.  That night we ventured to Sanlitun Road which is filled with neon bars offering terrible food and over priced drinks.

Day 4 was our biggest day at the Olympics with three events to attend – Waterpolo, handball and swimming.  In the men’s waterpolo Canada got thumped by Montenegro (of all places!), followed by a nail biter between Aussie and Spain, which Aussie ended up losing (suckers).  We then went to mens Handball where China got taught a lesson by the French in front of thousand’s of screaming Chinese fans who didn’t seem to care.  Lastly we ventured to the Water Cube to watch some swimming heats – good work to Sniders who barely scraped in to the top 16 in the breaststroke.

The buildings at the main Olympic area are visually outstanding (as expected).  My biggest disappointment is that the finishing is so poor – I guess they just did the bare minimum to do what they needed to before the Olympics started.

Yesterday we sat in the heat (not the sun) to watch the baseball – China vs Canada.  Somehow I managed to get burnt through the smog whilst watching Canada clean up.  Our highlight was almost getting hit by a home run!  We popped into Beijing Zoo to say Hi to all the depressed dirty animals – poor things.  I’m not a fan of Zoo’s at the best of times but this one was horrible.  Kelly and I contemplated hiding out till dark to help the animals escape but we were a little scared at the prospect of either being eaten or getting shot!  Even seeing the pandas wasn’t enough to cheer us up so we quickly moved on to watch some Volleyball – it was Cuba vs China.  There must has been less than 10 Europeans in the entire stadium and the sound of the Chinese fans was deafening.  We of course cheered for the Cubans (those damned Chinese have won more than enough gold medals) and they ended up winning in the final set of a very intense game (we have quite the knack of picking winners).  Was extremely exciting and we were so pumped after it.

Today we went for a bit of a shop this morning (I’m sure we were overcharged) then went ALL the way out to the rowing only to get soaking wet and for it to be postponed till tomorrow – which we can’t attend because we are going to basketball and football semis.  Was a bummer to not be able to cheer the Kiwis on!

Anyway I must be going, it’s almost dinner time.  Look forward to hearing everyones news.

Jussara’s Travelling Tips:  PART ONE

1. Pretty much anything a white, blonde haired girl does is an instant amusement for every Chinese within a 100m radius.  Even eating McDonald’s offers photo opportunities for Chinese families.  As does simply walking down the street.  Note to the Chinese -  You may think you’re subtle but we catch you everytime.

2. Eating is another amusing event for the locals.  The concept of us ordering enough food for a small army and shoving it down at the speed of light is somehow a crowd pleaser.

3. Maps seem to be deceivingly mis-scaled and what seems like a couple of blocks tends to turn out to be hours of walking.

4. The Chinese clearly haven’t learnt how to make money out of us tourists as we are yet to find any postcards or souvineers.  Even at the Olympic Stadiums there are no restaurants, bars, cafes or shops.  They do have 2 McDonalds outlets though – I’m sure the athletes are loving that.

5. Cheering for the team playing China can be highly amusing when you are in a crowd of thousands of Chinese, even more amusing pulling out the NZ flag when we aren’t even competing.

6. Squatting is quite an art.  Should be an Olympic sport.

Gosh it’s been a fair while since we last spoke, and so much has happened.  When I last emailed we were still in Beijing at the Olympics soaking up all the sporting glory.  We attended the beach volleyball party, saw Valerie barely break a sweat doing her one qualifying throw (Bird’s Nest=AMAZING!), loudly sung the national anthem in a Chinese sports bar as we collected our first medals, had the security staff on high alert at many hockey games with our raucous (drunken) cheering, sweated as we ran alongside our triathletes, watched the American women’s basketball team crush Korea in the semi finals, hung out with the very cool Beatrice F (outside KFC..haha), gagged at the hairy grotesque weightlifters, and watched foreign divers do bellyflops in comparison to the graceful Chinese who barely made a splash.  We missed out on watching the women’s football quarter finals due to the fact that the game was in Shanghai!

We also had plenty of time to immerse ourselves in Beijing culture.  We tried the delicious Peking duck (the restaurant was an experience in itself), shopped at the various markets, visited the Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven, viewed an oustanding acrobatics show, were partially crushed to death on a bus, and chilled at beautiful Houhai Lake.  We celebrated our last evening in style managing a solid 1.5 hours sleep before having to head to the international airport for our flight to Hong Kong.

Hong Kong was where the tour kicked off.  We are now on day 6 of the tour and we still haven’t learnt many peoples names.  Such slack kiwis!  We have just resorted to giving everyone little nicknames.  We also keep bumping into another Intrepid tour which Kelly and I have nicknamed “Jenny’s Group”… Jenny Craigs, need I say more?  Hong Kong is still one of my favourite cities and it was nice to at least be in some civilisation!  We caught the tram up Mount Victoria and Kelly got to soak in the amazing cityscape.

After Hong Kong we caught an overnight train and ended up in the very picturesque town of Yangshuo which is nestled amongst hundreds of limestone peaks.  With an abundance of free time we hit the shops, got horrible back-breaking massages, hired an electric scooter and tooted the town down, tried the local specialty – beer fish and caramalised taro (not together obviously!), went on a bike ride through the countryside, almost died of exhaustion climbing Moon Hill (with our personal fanners in toe), got lost deep within a water cave, watched 600 perfomers in a light show created by the same man who directed the Beijing Opening Ceremony, were taken through the local market where the butcher live chickens, eels, toads, geese, and dogs (!!), and lastly took a cooking class

After two nights in Yangshuo we then took another overnight train, and a 5 hour bus ride, to where we are now – in Yichang.  In a couple of hours we board our budget cruise boat to head along the Yangzee River for a few days.

Anyway I must dash because I can hear the Captain shouting, “all aboard”!

JSJ’s Ever-So-Helpful Travelling Tips:

1. Create games to help overcome boredom.  My favourites are counting the couples wearing matching T’s, counting the number of old caucasian men with young Chinese girls, and playing “Subway Chicken” – this is where on a packed subway Kelly and I stand in front of the doors as they open, and have a good old giggle at the frantic faces of those who can’t get on or get off (I usually cave well before Kelly does!).

2. Learn some Kiwi chants before attending Olympic events:  “We are black, we are white, we are bloody dynamite, we’re kiwis, we’re here for the gold!”  (Or in our case, the good old fourth place)

Time seems to be flying and it’s now not long till I head back to the “land of the long white cloud”.  I’m eagerly awaiting some cooler temperatures, and fresh milk!

When we last spoke we were heading on a cruise along the Three Gorges.  The boat wasn’t quite “The Love Boat” material but we certainly sparked chaos at the on-board disco/kareoke room.  Whilst the Yangzi River and surroundings are a beautiful sight, we had far too much time to kill and spent a majority of the time watching old dvds in Chinese, with Chinese subtitles.  Before our flight to Shanghai we managed to bypass the spectacular Three Gorges Dam project (which powers about 7% of China’s power).

Shanghai was the next stop and boy is it an amazing city.  Kelly and myself went WILD and threw ourselves into the real-life Sex and the City.  We had decided that we were going to do Shanghai on the run and fit in as much as we possibly could!  We dominated the Bund, perused the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall, skimmed the ultra boring Shanghai Museum, got lost in the Taiking Lu lanes (possibly the coolest thing in Shanghai), paid too much money to go through the “Bund Sightseeing Tunnel” (which was really a glorified LED show), photographed the city at night from the Oriental Pearl Tower, dined on steak (a rare thing!) and 7-course meals at top restaurants and drunk pricey cocktails at flash bars, ducked from one “secret” (or more likely illegal!) shop (behind remote controlled doors) to another, and strolled through the Yuyuan Gardens and Bazaar.  We still only scraped the surface of Shanghai so it’s definitely earned itself another visit in the future.

From Shanghai we headed to Hangzhou, which is supposedly China’s most famous tourist attraction.  I’m not sure if we were still buzzing about Shanghai but the city certainly didn’t inspire us.  The West Lake is the main drawcard but was constantly clouded in fog and we couldn’t seem to find any of the restaurants around it that the Lonely Planet had boasted.  Actually we couldn’t find any restaurants at all!  Our day sightseeing was fun visiting the Six Harmonies Pagoda, learning about how green tea is made, trying local food specialties, and climbing through the Lingyin Temple.

We then bussed to Huang Shan (the Yellow Mountains).  We spent half a day climbing the stupid mountain and poor Kelly had to endure 4 hours of my constant moaning and cursing.  It might had been an inch of fun if:  A. It wasn’t so hot, B. There weren’t so many stairs, C. There was a little less fog (so that you could actually see something), and D. If there weren’t thousands of yelling, pushing, photo-taking, puffing Chinese tourists accompanied by their megaphone-carrying tour guides.

Anyway….From there we caught another overnight train to Suzhou.  We stayed a night at Zhouzhuang (about an hour out of Suzhou), which I guess is like the Chinese version of Venice (except with venomous mosquitos).  Suzhou was meant to be on the same attraction level as Hangzhou but again has clearly been overrated.  About the only thing we achieved in Suzhou was to add to our ever increasing tally of DVDs!

We are now in Xian and head out tonight on our last overnight train ride to a small town called Pingyao.  Xian has been another of our favourite places – ir’s a city with so much culture and history, and our Hotel is located in the thick of the Muslim Quarter.  We experienced an extremely amusing night out at our first authentic Chinese Nightclub, and yesterday we drove out to see the Terracotta Warriors – by far one of the highlights of the trip.

Ok I think that’s all for now.  If I don’t talk to you beforehand I’ll see you back in NZ!!

TEN THINGS WE LOVE ABOUT CHINA:

1. It’s the country that never sleeps.

2. When ordering an alcoholic beverage it’s either a triple shot or nothing.

3. Maps constantly lie – even when you’re sure somethings “just down the road”, it’s likely to be hours away.

4. Matching T’s are like wedding rings.  If you’re not matching, then you’re just friends.

5. Queuing is so old fashioned – if you don’t push in, don’t expect to be served.

6. Hoicking and spitting is a sign of coolness – the more you do it, the cooler you are.

7. Squatters are a fine example of poor design – no matter how big the hole, the floors are always wet.

8. Being any shade of white means you’re instantly famous and people are likely to want a photo with you.

9. There’s no worry about getting rabies – all the dogs have been eaten.

10. We can be as rude and abnoxious as we want, as long as we say it with a smile on our face.

des fois, je me dis que c’est un coup de bol qu’IL ne soit pas allé se ballader en Norvège pour voir les fjords, ou en Suède pour voir … heu ben … les magnifiques forêts, ou que sais-je, faire du ski de fond…

ah nan parce que les grands blonds de là bas – ou devrais-je dire de la HAUT – “i” lui auraient tout caché le panorama (ffffft… ç’aurait été trop bête, nan ?) et il aurait été tout PetitRikiki au milieu et tout…
pi’ SUR-TOUT,  ”i” nous l’auraient caché à nous aussi, que genre on n’aurait vu que des têtes blondes partout (ffffft… et nous on n’aime pas les blonds… OK, OK il ya des exceptions… peut être )

Tandis que là, c’est bien.

Pourkoi k’ IL est pas resté CoinCointierPRO ??? C’était pourtant  une bonne planque, nan ? 
Rhooo, pis s’ IL fait pas gaffe, “i” va se faire encore plus balafrer DePartout mais que là, ça risque d’être pas joli DuTout-DuTout !

… c’est pas si cool que ça, le Stand de PanBagnat !

C’est même à s’arracher les cheveux (voui bon ça va, c’est une essspression, huh ?), passk’ y’a une GRANDE majorité d’hurluberlus qu’ont des exigences complètement dingues, genre anchois à gogo et olives DePartout (Beurk ! Rien que d’y penser,  ça m’donne des boutons).
Ben koi ? Les gens normaux, “i” z’aiment leur sandwich avé poivron+saucisse+PLEIN de fromage+éventuellement un peu de poivre vert ou alors, le nec plus ultra, juste avé ananas+jambon. C’est tout.

Du coup, j’en ai vite eu marre de tout ce cirque et j’ me suis dégoté une occupation trop mieux, que maintenant, ch’suis pu’ obligé de faire le poireau derrière mon p’tit étal… C’est à force de voir toutes ces touristes égarées, qui se font facilement entourlouper et des fois aussi malmener par des malotrus, que l’idée m’est venue. J’me suis dit…

Je vais faire BODYGUARD !

Alors j’ai commencé “petit”, en fonction des besoins dans les parages.
Une brave dame un peu empotée, qu’avait besoin d’un guide costaud, en cas de mauvaises rencontres, et surtout TRES patient, passk’elle mettait des heures à chaque fois pour prendre ses photos (même qu’elle avait pas de numérique, comme TLM. Pfff !)…

Après, j’me suis mis à  bouger, en accompagnant des jeunes étudiantes de chez nous dans leurs voyages linguistiques en pays à risques, du style LaGalloRomanieDuNord…

Là, faut être drôlement vigilant pour repérer les fâcheux à distance… Ca pullule à tous les coins de rue, que c’est une horreur, et “i” sont spécialistes pour se fondre dans la foule des passants innocents…

Pis y’a toujours des pénibles, qui font des histoires pour un oui ou pour un non, comme çui-là qu’a rien voulu savoir, quand est entrés j’ter un coup d’oeil dans le vestibule d’une grande bicoque Rue du Faubourg St Honoré. Ce naze a même pas daigné prendre en compte nos CityPassePartout ! J’ai bien cru que j’allais lui coller une mandale. Mh…

Ensuite – merci le bouche à oreille – ch’suis passé au service des FillesAPapa, qui veulent faire leur shopping en toute sécurité, mais qu’ont surtout besoin de 2 bras supplémentaires pour trimballer TOUS leurs achats !

Des vraies tornades, ces greluches. Faut avoir la santé pour les suivre ! Pfiou, c’est que j’ai pu’ 20 ans, moâ !

Alors de fil en aiguille, je me suis orienté vers les BourgeoisesDeMoinsDe50Ans. Une valeur sûre parait-il…
Avec elles, CQFE obligatoire…

Bah, c’est une espèce qu’a un peu moins la bougeotte, mais elles causent, elles causent, et faut leur faire la conversation aussi, ToutLeTemps !
Si seulement on pouvait les baillonner !

Pis un jour, j’me suis retrouvé chargé de la protection rapprochée de starlettes en tous genres… même les plus mauvais, c’est rien de le dire ! De la pouffie pur jus.

Et là, cliente distinguée ou pas, faut assurer avé l’habit qu’est censé faire le moine, i.e. le CQT !!!
Arf, y’a des jours où faut savoir composer et rester neutre, mais ça me ramène dans un univers que je connais bien…
… et qui me manque quand même un peu…

De temps en temps, il m’arrive même de tomber sur de vieilles copines, dans les fameux Pince-Fesse Olivoudiens !
Eh voui, la boucle est bouclée. Retour à la case Départ, ça m’ fait vraiment tout drôle !

C’est sympa… sauf que ça peut aussi être très embarrassant, quand certaine se laisse aller à lever allègrement le coude, sans rien picorer pour atténuer l’effet vertige… “A” prétend que c’est le plaisir de me revoir qui la grise, mais ch’suis pas né de la dernière pluie, faut pas m’en conter !

entre réveillons ici et déjeuners de fêtes là,
une bouffe ches les uns et un diner chez les autres,
j’ai passé quinze jours à faire la vaisselle, moha…

et en plus je crois que MomMan “a” l’est furieuse passke j’y ai cassé une assiette
que maintenant sa collec’ sur le mur elle est toute bancale…

m’enfin bon,
je ne vais quand meme pas me plaindre trop fort,
parce que je me suis fait une série de grasses matinées…

sauf que dis donc dis donc dis donc
on se pèle dans ce pays !!!
ça caille que c’est une horreur !!!
dès que tu mets le nez dehors, tu te gèles que nan nan nan c’est même pas la peine !

du coté de mon PontCroulant, c’est pas comme ça !!!
